Everlasting love Belmont couple, Joe and Bobbie Bellamy celebrate 70 years of marriage • PAUL MONFORTE
elmont's Joe and Bobbie Bellamy have celebrated 70 years of marriage. Mr and Mrs Bellamy were married on July 1, 1944 shortly after Mr Bellamy returned from serving in New Guinea during World War II. "I remember it was pouring with rain," Mrs Bellamy said of their wedding day, "I looked like a drowned rat." Federal Member for Shortland, Jill Hall paid Mr and Mrs Bellamy a visit on their anniversary last Wednesday to pass on a bright bunch of flowers and her personal congratulations. Ms Hall, a longtime resident of Belmont, spent two hours reminiscing with the happy couple about the changing face of the suburb over the years. "They are such a lovely couple, 1very much enjoyed being able to spend time with them on their anniversary," Ms Hall said. The pair met in their early teens at a temporary skating rink that had been setup in Belmont. "Joe was a friend of my brother," Mrs Bellamy said. "He was and still is such as gentle person." Mr Bellamy said he was instantly attracted to the girl who would become his wife. "We just clicked," he said. "I knew straight away that she was the one". Of course the question they have been asked many times over the past 70 years is, "what is the

Mr Bellamy held down numerous jobs in various industries over the years, including 16 years as a professional fisherman on Lake Macquarie. "I remember being chased by the fisheries officer for four and a half hours around the Lake
one day," Mr Bellamy recalled with a laugh. Mrs Bellamy worked at the Melvic Theatre which was located on the corner of the Pacific Highway and Macquarie Street in Belmont. The Bellamys have one son, Dallas, who has won numerous sailing championships on Lake Macquarie in a boat built by his father. Mr and Mrs Bellamy celebrated their anniver· sary with a small family dinner at Belmont 16s.
