The recent attempted abduction of a woman in Sydney really made me think.

Of course I was horrified that the incident could occur at all in our country, let alone in the middle of the day.

But I also thought about whether I would have stepped in to help had I been one of the dozens of passers-by that apparently didn't come to the woman's assistance.

As bad as it sounds, I really don't think that I would have tried to stop the abduction.

There was an interesting article in the Sydney media in the days following the incident. It pointed out the existence of what experts refer to as the "bystander effect".

It refers to people not quite knowing how to respond in emergency situations where there are a large number of other people around.

The initial reaction is to look at how others are reacting. If they aren't panicking or rushing over to help then subconsciously you feel that maybe it isn't an emergency and intervention isn't required.

Of course, the reality is that everyone is doing that - all looking for someone else to do something and nothing gets done.

That's exactly how I would have reacted in the Sydney abduction incident. You'd be thinking 'hang on, this doesn't look right' and wondering if someone was going to make it stop.

Unfortunately these incidents can be all over in a matter of seconds and the results of nonintervention can have tragic consequences.

Then there is the very important matter of your own personal safety. The incident in Sydney involved a car full of men tried to abduct the women.

Who knows what sort of weapons they had with them? Had somebody intervened, they also could have been dragged along the road.

I also thought about whether someone would have intervened had it been a child getting bundled into a car in Sydney the other day.

I think chances are that someone would have stepped in or at least challenged the perpetrators as to what the hell was going on.

he Shortland to Sandgate section of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass will open to traffic tomorrow (Thursday).

The $143 million four-lane carriageway is expected to shave five minutes off the average cross-city journey and help alleviate traffic delays between Industrial Drive and Old Maitland Road on the Pacific Highway.

Visiting the site ahead of the opening, NSW Roads and Ports Minister, Duncan Gay, said the construction team were busy completing final drainage, landscaping and line-marking works, and weather permitting the road would be open to motorists on Thursday, January 23.

“The local community has waited a long time for this,” Mr Gay said.

“We’ve put 1.8 kilometres of better road in, the fourth step in a five-part jigsaw and that is a huge step in the right direction.”

He also congratulated Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) and Thiess on seeing the project through to completion after the original contractor, Reed Construction,

LAKE MACQUARIE Residents of Lake Macquarie are being encouraged to spend their Australia Day enjoying the sun, lakeside, at the Lake Macquarie Festival in Speers Point Park.

The park will be packed with familyfriendly activities, including movie screenings, music and rides.

Tayla Doran has been waving her pompoms from the sidelines of Hunter Stadium for the last three years. She said a Knights cheerleader should have a passion for dance, a tolerance for the cold during nippy night games, a positive attitude, and most of all, a love of football.

“I grew up in Newcastle and I remember watching the Knights with my family as a kid – the cheerleaders were always my favourite part of going to home games,” she said. “It’s such a rush when you get out on field to dance for the first time.”

Researchers will be doorknocking areas of Valentine, Eleebana, Bolton Point, Teralba, Bonnells Bay, Silverwater, Kotara and Adamstown looking for men and boys aged from 10 to 55 years to participate in the University of Melbourne’s ‘Ten to Men’ longitudinal study into men’s health.

Professor Dallas English, from the School of Population and Global Health at the University of Melbourne, said the study will fill the knowledge gap around men’s health and wellbeing and collect vital data on the lifestyle, mental health, physical activity, social networks and relationships of Australian men.

“A better understanding of the health of Australian males is long overdue,” he said.

“We need to let go of the stereotype of the tough Aussie male and identify the real barriers to men achieving optimal health.”

Quarterly Child Care Rebate payments have started to hit the bank accounts of nearly 285,000 eligible parents across the country.

Minister for Human Services Senator the Hon Marise Payne said payments covering September to December 2013 will be made automatically to eligible families.

he nervous wait that many school leavers have been forced to endure since completing their HSC exams finally ended last week, with thousands of prospective undergraduate students being offered places at the University of Newcastle.

There were 6,724 places were offered by email and SMS, adding to the 1,500 already made in early January to students with an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) above 90, as part of the university’s high ATAR guarantee scheme. Deputy vice-chancellor (academic), Professor Andrew Parfitt, said the high number of applications the university received was reflective of the level of interest in the courses it offers.

“In 2014, there were 18,587 applications from students across Australia with at least one preference for an undergraduate degree at the University of Newcastle, indicating a high degree of interest in our programs,” he said.

“Importantly, 26 per cent of our offers are to applicants with an ATAR of 90 or above, and the median ATAR of applicants receiving an offer is 83. “This is a testament to the quality of students choosing to study at Newcastle.”

guided audio tour, created for children aged 5 to 12.

“They get to learn about major historical events within the gaol, as well as what prison life was like from the colonial era to the modern era.”

The children’s audio tour is guided by Snitch the Rat, who will teach the kids prison slang and introduce them to his friends, a pigeon and a cockroach.

“Dry and drought conditions can present some of the greatest challenges for your lawn and garden. Most of the things you can do to help your garden and lawn through a dry time actually happen before a dry spell hits,” says Adam.

Water slowly yet deeply: This will develop deeper root systems in both lawn

and garden plants. A deeper root system is more likely to find moisture as things dry out and it’s less likely to be damaged by extreme heat.

Regularly apply soil conditioners such as bio-fertiliser or seaweed tonic: These add bacteria to the soil and stimulate other biological activity to help create organic matter deep down around the roots. This organic matter is excellent at retaining moisture where the plants need it most.

Mulch: Keep your garden well mulched and run your mower on mulching mode.

This helps to both retain valuable moisture and insulate the soil and plant roots from hot weather.

Lake Macquarie City Council will host a clean-up event at Caves Beach this weekend as part of its Eco Angels program.

The program, which has been running since mid-2013, aims to inspire residents of all ages and backgrounds to help provide clean and healthy public places throughout the city, reduce levels of rubbish, and minimise the amount of illegal dumping affecting the natural environment.

Eco Angel volunteers have already cleaned up areas of Speers Point and bushfire-affected areas of Catherine Hill Bay, collecting hundreds of kilograms of waste. Council’s manager sustainability, Alice Howe, hoped the regular clean-up events would see Lake Macquarie residents take responsibility for waste.

“We know our residents are proud of our lake and its catchment,” she said.

“The Eco Angels program encourages people to think about the impact of litter and illegal dumping on our native animals, natural areas and water quality and ways they can help to minimise it.

The event will take place at the Caves Beach Surf Club from 8:30am to midday this Saturday. There will also be a free barbeque after the clean-up. To RSVP, call Council on 4921 0333 or email Thomasen at tleahy@lakemac.nsw.gov.au.

Apprentices with the world at their feet

ocal apprentices will reap the rewards of a new $5 million purpose-built training centre at Rutherford.

Hunter Valley Training Company (HVTC) threw open the doors to its new skills centre last week, inviting apprentices, their parents and host employers to tour the custom facility.

“It’s been years in the dreaming, 18 months in the planning and seven months in construction,” CEO Sharon Smith said.

HVTC had outgrown its former premises at the East Greta Junction, and Ms Smith said the new centre was designed to train apprentices to be more workforce-ready.

“We needed to be more responsive to employers and train people the way they need to work,” Ms Smith explained.

“This will be more reflective of safety and the workplace environment and create more skilled workers for the future.”

The new facility includes nine classrooms, workshops for fabrication, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering, as well as the company’s administration facilities.

Police snapshot Woman arrested over Lake Macquarie bushfire A 19-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with lighting a bushfire that destroyed nearly 400 hectares of bushland in the greater Lake Macquarie area.

At some stage during the evening of Saturday 28 September 2013, a bushfire was started in bushland near Killingworth. The fire destroyed 395 hectares of bushland.

Detectives from the Property Crime Squad’s Arson Unit, commenced an investigation into the fire.

Shortly after 8am last Thursday, detectives attended a home in Railway Street, Teralba, where they arrested a 19-year-old woman, and seized a number of items, including a Nissan Patrol 4WD and a pair of shoes. She was taken to Toronto Police Station and charged with knowingly cause bushfire and be reckless as to its spread. The woman has been granted conditional bail and is scheduled to appear in Toronto Local Court on Wednesday 5 February 2014.

Girl, 14, approached at Charlestown bus stop A man is due to appear in court next month charged over the alleged intimidation of a girl at Charlestown.

Police from Lake Macquarie Local Area Command have been investigating an incident which allegedly occurred about 6pm on Tuesday 7 January 2014, when a man approached a 14-year-old girl at a bus stop on Pearson Street.

An appeal for public assistance was made last week and following further inquiries, police executed a search warrant on a home in Avoca Beach. A 45-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Gosford Police Station. He was charged with stalk/intimidate and was granted strict conditional bail to appear in Gosford Local Court on Tuesday 25 February 2014.

Information needed after Cessnock armed robbery Central Hunter Police are appealing for information after the armed robbery of a Cessnock service station last week.

At approximately 4:20am two men entered the service station on Wollombi Road, armed with a shotgun and a baseball bat. The men threatened the male console operator, demanding money.

They took cash and cigarettes before fleeing on foot. The men were last seen running west along Wollombi Road.

Woman killed at Hexham after sedan and car collide A woman has died following a collision between a sedan and van at Hexham on Thursday morning.

The accident occurred on Maitland Road, near Merchant Street, shortly before 7am. Emergency services arrived on the scene to find the woman, the sole occupant of the sedan, deceased.

The occupants of the van were uninjured, but the driver was taken to The Mater Hospital for mandatory drug and urine testing.

It is a highly emotional moment for those becoming citizens, their families and even for me, as these new citizens commit to our nation and sing the national anthem as Australian citizens for the first time.

Earlier this week, as part of our local Australia Day celebrations, we also recognised those who have made outstanding contributions to our City.

The Lake Macquarie Australia Day Awards are an opportunity to hear and share stories of efforts made by individuals and groups for the benefit of others. All of the applications were of a high standard, and it was very humbling to learn about and hear of the inspired, dedicated and selfless work of our community members.

The "Look After Your Selfies" awareness campaign from the Hunter Melanoma Foundation (HMF) is currently targeting 13 to 25-year-olds, mainly via social media.

"By starting the conversation using a language they understand, peer to peer through Instagram and Facebook, we have a better chance of getting our message across" said Jenny Noblet, executive officer of HMF.

"This age group has somehow forgotten about the dangers of sunburn and any given day we still see teens baking themselves on our beaches chasing that tan.

"We need to make the youth of today aware that melanoma can kill and not just older people, it doesn't discriminate.

"The Hunter, unfortunately, has one of the highest rates of melanoma in the world [and] that's why it is vital for us to get this message through."

ewcastle's Dr Kelvin Kong has made history as Australia’s first Indigenous surgeon.

A specialist in ear, nose and throat surgery, Dr Kong has dedicated his life to improving access and resources to remote communities to tackle ear disease, preventing a life of disadvantage.

His unwavering commitment to improving especially children’s health in isolated locations has inspired many.

Ear disease is affecting generations of young Aboriginal children and can be the root cause of a life devoid of education and opportunity.

“The amazing thing looking at ear disease in this country is that we live in a dichotomy," explained Dr Kong.

"The dichotomy is that in Aboriginal Australia our ear health status is at fourth world status - not third dichotomy world status.

"We're looking at countries like Africa where their health system is deplorable.

"We’re actually getting worse statistics than them.”

Brett Morgan believes Newcastle has unbelievable talent and potential in its youth, and is looking forward to using his expertise and contacts to inspire young dancers at Lambton’s Marie Walton Mahon Dance Academy and National College of Dance. An illustrious 35-year career has seen Mr Morgan dance principle roles nationally and internationally with the Australian Ballet Company and Sydney Dance Company. He was also Associate Artistic Director of the Sydney Dance Company prior to teaching throughout NSW’s best schools for pre-professional dancers.

But seeing enormous Novocastrian potential, Mr Morgan was wooed from Sydney two and a half years ago to take up the Artistic Director’s role at the National College of Dance.

Both MWM and NCD have achieved exceptional results, culminating in 2013 with Caleb Durbin winning the McDonald's City of Sydney Eisteddfod. Caleb and Belle Beasley were also only of eight Australian representatives to compete in the prestigious Prix de Lausanne, an achievement rarely seen in a dance school.

Top tips for getting organised Life seems to go from zero to 100 during the first few weeks of the new school year. Here are a few tips to help get back into the groove: • Check the school has all your contact information including daytime phone numbers. Have you changed address or phone number since last year?

• Have you nominated a current emergency contact – someone who would be able to come and collect your child if you weren't available? After you check with them, supply their details to the school.

• Medications that are kept at school.

Are they up-to-date with complete, current instructions for use? Have you supplied any consumables necessary for administering the medication to your child?

• Does your child need a mobile phone this year? Make sure they have your contact numbers and emergency contacts programmed into their phone. Also, establish the rules of use at school. Many primary schools require students to leave their phone at the office during the school day and collect it when class finishes. Make them use a phone cover and consider taking out insurance in case they lose their phone.

• Label uniforms, lunch boxes, bags, etc, clearly (this will save you money!)

• If you pack a lunch box, make sure you include a frozen drink or ice brick to help prevent food poisoning – especially in summer.

• Buy a large pump pack of sunscreen

and keep it somewhere visible and handy. Get into the habit of slathering your child's face, neck and limbs before school each day.

• Introduce yourself to the teacher early

in the year. If your school has an orientation night or 'meet the teacher' event make a point of attending.

• Does your child's class have a volunteer 'class parent' to help the teacher organise events, send out communications, etc? If so, make sure you supply them with your contact details (if you want to be included in emails, etc) and even consider volunteering for the role.

It usually only means an hour at most a week and is guaranteed to keep you in the loop on all class events.

• If your child is in high school ask them to write all their teachers' names on their timetables and make a copy for the fridge. If they have a mobile phone, have them take a photo of their timetable so they have it on them all the time.

• Connect with at least one other parent in the class and exchange contact details – it's great to have someone to double check with when you're not sure about class events, etc.

• If you can find just one morning a month to volunteer at the school it's really worth the effort. Your child will love having you in the canteen or helping with reading, it helps you get to know the teachers and you'll get know your child's classmates a little better.

Hopefully everyone is still on track with their fitness and eating goals. Remember small sustainable changes are more likely to last than extreme makeover, gimmick-type diets. A lot of these will do more harm than good.

For example, according to a Dietitians Association of Australia survey the lemon detox diet struck a particularly sour note.

They have voted the two-week water, lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup fad as the worst diet for the third year in a row. The SkinnyMe tea, and the Ashy Bines Bikini Body Challenge are the next worst.

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to losing weight, says association spokesperson Melanie McGrice, a recognised, practising dietician.

“The problem with fad diets is they’re all about restrictive eating patterns that you can’t stick to over the long haul. They may even undermine your health,” she said. “What you lose on detox diets, like the lemon detox diet and SkinnyMe tea, is usually fluid, healthy gut bacteria and electrolytes.”

She says people don’t need to go on severe detox diets because the lungs, liver, and kidneys provide the function every minute of the day.

People who want to detox should cut down on highly processed, junk and prepackaged foods, alcohol and caffeine and also, be aware of foods that trigger any kind of ill feeling or upset stomach personally.

With such a small range of accessories available on the market for men, it surprises me that so many choose not to wear them at all.

As a woman, accessorising is often a source of stress for me because of the sheer number of different ‘things’ I can add to an outfit. When I am spending hours rummaging through rings, bracelets, necklaces, hair wear, anklets, earrings, handbags, toe rings and nail polishes, trying to put together an outfit, I find myself envying men. Guys, accessorising is so easy for you – all you need is a watch.

On a recent trip overseas, I spent a few days in Switzerland, a country known for its enormous timepiece manufacturing industry. Many people judge the quality of a watch based on where it was manufactured, with Switzerland known as the best of the best. Everywhere you looked there were men (and women) in watches of all different kinds, colours and price ranges.

I found the same sort of thing when I visited Singapore on another trip – unlike Switzerland, Singapore isn’t known for watch making, it is known for watch consumption. There was store after store full of luxury watches, with customers inside at all hours of the day and night. Every brand, every price and every style was represented in the stores and on every man, woman and child. Australia is completely different. Yes, there are many men who love a good watch and some who have multiple but the amount of men walking around with bare wrists is surprising.

Our homes cannot survive without an efficient waste disposal system, and the same applies to our body. Our homes may have trucks come to pick up our rubbish and waste, and our sewerage systems do the rest. Our bodies however have our kidneys.

The kidneys are two small, bean-shaped organs which do an enormous job. In fact, one functioning kidney is essential for life and this year we are being asked to think of our kidneys on Australia day, with the Big Red BBQ fundraiser.

Teaching old male dogs new tricks: spotlight on men’s health My wife has been pestering me to see my family doctor for a check-up. But I feel fine and have not needed to see my doctor for years. Is it really necessary for me to have a check-up? (Jim, 63) Thanks for your question Jim. No one likes going to the doctor, especially when they are feeling well, but some of us blokes are harder to move than a mountain when it comes to looking after our health. Men generally have a shorter life expectancy than women, we take higher risks, have poorer health and are less likely to visit our family doctor. But we can turn the tables. A regular health check can be useful to help detect early warning signs of disease like diabetes, heart disease and some cancers and your doctor can give you valuable advice on how to stay healthy. So, even when you are feeling well, regular check-ups can help to keep you well for longer…so there is certainly some merit in your wife’s persistence.

A men’s health check-up is not too scary. You can expect your doctor to review your personal medical history,

your family medical history and your lifestyle habits, like smoking, drinking, diet and exercise. Your risk for developing disease depends on all these things.

Our risk for developing disease also increases with age, even if we have no other risk factors. So, your doctor will likely tailor your check-up to the issues you raise and your age.

Every adult, regardless of age, should have their blood pressure checked at least every two years. The older you get and the higher your risk factors (like family history of heart disease or stroke, high cholesterol or diabetes) the more important it is to have your blood pressure checked more often. Obesity is becoming a more common problem in our community and you should have your height, weight and waist measurement taken at least once every year from age 40 onwards. A waist measurement (for men) of more than 94cm puts you at higher risk of developing disease. You may also need some blood tests to check your cholesterol and glucose.

A lot of men may be reluctant to see

their doctor for a check-up because they may be scared of having a rectal examination for prostate cancer. However, current screening guidelines, including rectal examination and blood testing, are controversial. Your risk of developing prostate cancer may be increased if you have a positive family history of prostate or breast cancer but your GP will be able to advise you on the pros and cons of screening based on your personal history.

Some things that men don’t often think about, but which are an important part of a comprehensive men’s health check-up, include checking that your immunisations are up to date; discussing relationship problems and sexual health; eye, hearing and dental health; mental health, like depression; and having a skin check, especially if you have a history of significant sun exposure.

So, Jim, while it may seem unnecessary to visit your GP when you are feeling so well, this may be one thing you will thank your wife for pestering you about in the long run.

frontman Declan Melia told TE. “When the time came to record another album we found ourselves without a label and a rehearsal space and we started questioning whether or not we wanted to continue as a band.”

Thankfully they chose to persevere and the result is their fifth long player ‘Controller’ arguably the band’s most fully realised and mature release to date.

The album has been kicking various goals around the traps since its release in March last year and, more recently, the lead single ‘I Can Make You Love Me’ attained gold status.

“Yeah it’s not bad for a bunch of young men from Mentone, Victoria who are in a little indie band that could,” Melia said.

“Honestly we never thought it would happen to us. Gold records usually happen to much better-looking people.”

While ‘Controller’ may be their most commercially accessible album, Melia said that the band felt some weight of expectation to replicate earlier successes going into the studio, firstly because it had been more than three years since ‘Avalanche’ and secondly because it was their first outing with new label Liberation.

“Yeah there was definitely pressure to replicate former success,” he said.

“The way I see it, every record has to be better than the last one or it’s game over – especially in this day and age and any artist who says that they don’t care about getting played on the radio or anything are having themselves on. So, yeah, there was pressure, but I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad thing – pushing ourselves to make a better record.”

Now that the album has been doing its thing for a while now, British India are well and truly hitting the ground running in 2014 with a string of headline shows as well as supporting Aussie pub rock legends Hunters and Collectors on their upcoming Day on the Green shows.

“It’s a great way to start the year,” Melia

Klezmer is a musical tradition of the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe.

Played by professional musicians called klezmorim, the genre originally consisted largely of dance tunes and instrumental display pieces for weddings and other celebrations.

Klezmer is easily identifiable by its characteristic expressive melodies, reminiscent of the human voice, complete with laughing and weeping.

This is not a coincidence - the style is meant to imitate khazone and paraliturgical singing. A number of dreydlekh (a Yiddish word for musical ornaments), such as krekhts ("sobs") are used to produce this style.

The London Klezmer Quartet, an allfemale band, are innovators and have emerged as leaders in the international klezmer scene, presenting a heady mix of traditional and original melodies that is the celebratory and soulful music of pre-war Jewish eastern Europe.

The London Klezmer Quartet take audiences on a Jewish Odyssey from Eastern Europe to Australia via the Balkans, Turkey, the US and London.

truly put the band at the top of the British invasion tree and still sound as fresh today as they did when realeased in the heady 1960s.

Now, some 50 years after first bursting onto what was to become known as the Merseybeat scene (alongside the likes of The Beatles, The Merseybeat, Gerry and the Pacemakers, and the Swingin’ Blue Jeans) the band are still well and truly a going concern and are set to continue a lifelong love affair with Australia when they touch down here next month.

“We just love Australia – we’ve been coming down there since September 1964 and have made it pretty much an annual tradition ever since,” bass player Frank Allen told TE from down the line at Heath-

row Airport. “It’s pretty amazing actually to see just how far Australia has come - the way Sydney has grown in that time is just phenomenal.”

“We had recorded When You Walk In The Room and we headed over to Australia for a tour,” Allen explained.

“Anyway, while we were over there, the song started shooting up the charts and we didn’t have videos or anything in those days and there was no way to play it on Top Of The Pops so the BBC sent a film crew down to Australia to film us and that’s what they ended up using as the promotional clip for the song. Unfortunately I heard that the footage was scrapped by the BBC – I would’ve loved to get my hands on a copy.”

While the Searchers legacy may not be as readily recognisable as the Stones or the Beatles, Allen said the bands influence can still be heard in the sounds of today.

“I think The Searchers did influence music quite a bit in that the whole 12-string guitar sound was not used very much at all apart from bands like The Byrds. Then, particularly in the 90s with bands like Blur and Oasis, suddenly you had this really jangly sound creeping back in again. Also, Bruce Springsteen cites us as an influence and Tom Petty named ‘When You Walk In The Room’ in his top ten favourite British invasion records in Mojo magazine which is pretty nice.”

Troubadour Tom Tom Buckley like a lot of twangers, is a muso with a guitar and long hair. Tom's also quite possibly the funniest and coolest muso in all of Newcastle, so he thinks.

Tom’s passion for music started at very young age playing “La Bamba” in a nappy to his mum on a 2 string guitar. This passion has stuck with him and is fast making him a favourite in the local scene.

Tom's set list covers a vast range of genres and is forever growing, incorporating classics right through to current hits, to entertain all ages.

Tom Buckley is new to the solo scene, but not new to the music scene.

Tom has been lead singer of rock and roll covers band Moonlight Drive for more than seven years, and in this time learnt all the essentials needed to satisfy a crowd on any occasion.

fter catching the comedy bug as a 16-year-old, Newcastle-bred comedian Rowan Thambar knew that the life of a stand-up was one that he wanted to pursue.

Now, the 19-year-old will be returning to his old stomping ground to premiere his debut one-man show, ‘The Brown

Identity’ at the Royal Exchange Theatre.

“Yes, I’m really excited and a little bit nervous as it is the first show that I have produced, but hopefully people will have a lot of fun.”

Thambar said that while a large part of the show focussed on growing up as a Sri Lankan Australian, there were myriad topics covered in the one hour show.

“It is basically about me growing up in Australia with Sri Lankan heritage but I also touch on what it means to be

growing up as a member of my generation – it’s quite an expansive show that covers things like racism in society and how the media portrays it as well as the effect things like social media and reality television are having on us all. It sounds quite serious but I assure you, it’s also quite fun.

“I’ve always believed that the sole purpose of comedy is to challenge and question society in a light-hearted way and that’s definitely what I’m trying to achieve with the show.”

Thambar said it was seeing The Chaser crew performing live that piqued his interest in comedy, however, it wasn’t until he relocated to Sydney for university that the bug really took hold.

“I really started doing comedy when I was 16 and I went in the Class Clowns Comedy Copetition and I managed to make it to the national finals in Melbourne,” he explained.

“After that, I finished school and did a few gigs here and there but when I moved to Sydney, I really got back into comedy, but in terms of influences, the Chaser guys are definitely up there and as there is a musical component to what I do as well, people like Tim Minchin are big inspirations to me.

Rowan Thambar will be performing “The Brown Identity” at the Royal Exchange Theatre on Thursday, January 30 and Friday, January 31.

Jungal boogie T here is no denying that, when siblings sing together, there is something, almost intangible in the mesmeric resonance of their harmonies that can’t be beat as evidenced by the likes of The Andrews Sisters, The Beach Boys and our own Bee Gees.

Melbourne-based roots act, Jungal is making the most of this phenomenon, courtesy of sisters Jessie and Leisha Jungalwalla, with lush harmonies tempered by an earthy, foot-stomping roots/folk sound that has been described as having the heart of John Butler and the soul of Amy Winehouse.

The three-piece (fleshed out by friend Victoria Beard) will be in Newcastle this week in support of their sophomore long player ‘Leave My Head’ and Leisha Jungalwalla told TE that the prospect of kicking off the year with an East Coast run, with new product in tow, was an exciting one.

“Yes, it is exciting because one of our band members is just back from Canada so we’re literally rehearsing today and then heading out on the road.

“We recorded the album in April last year and then went on a tour of Canada so we haven’t really had a chance to play the new stuff on home soil yet.”

With their debut album ‘This Crooked Track’ dropping in 2010, it’s been a relatively long time between drinks and Jungalwalla said that a lot of water had passed under the Jungal bridge - as evidenced in the approach to songwriting this time around.

“Since the last album we’ve done quite a bit of touring and I’d say that was quite a big influence on the way we write and we’ve gone few a few personal things as well that, I think, have given the new songs a bit of a darker edge.”

If the pundits are to be believed, Jungal are certainly a band who know their way around a stage and Jungalwalla said the new album represented the first time they were able to capture the live energy on tape.

“Previously we have had some difficulty in getting that live vibe to come across on records,’ she said.

“But, with this one, we were limited by the number of days available so we basically spent one day on a track and we were really able to concentrate on capturing that live feel – we’re all really satisfied with the end result.”

amily relationships will be pushed to the limit when two of Australia’s premier blues harmonica players go head to head with each other - and their wives this Australia Day. Ian Collard and Chris Wilson will be on the same bill as country-swing supergroup, The Junes (pictured), featuring their best beloveds Suzannah Espie and Sarah Carroll along with Novacastrians Gleny Rae and Dougie Bull (also partners). The event is inaugural Australia Day rhythm and roots festival the Coaltown Strutters Ball, organised by Newcastle muso and member of the Junes Gleny Rae. Rae is capitalising on the artists in the area for the Tamworth and Nundle festivals, and bringing them together for a day long festival to provide quality family entertainment on one of our most festive public holidays.

“Over the past few years, I have watched Australia Day degenerate into an alcohol inspired jingoistic parade of Australian flags. Most revellers don’t even recognise what the day represents,” she said.

“As a multicultural nation, the celebration of settlement means different things to different people, particularly the Indigenous population. But to me, it should be a celebration of unity and Australian culture, particularly music!”

Epic paddling journey from Brisbane to Sydney for Beyond Blue

Michael Leith and Dr Tony Miller-Greenman in Newcastle on Saturday on their way to Sydney from Brisbane Lawyer Michael Leith and Dr Tony Miller-Greenman from Perth stopped off in Newcastle last Saturday as part of their journey of paddling from Brisbane to Sydney to promote mental and physical health.

Commencing on December 27, Michael and Tony embarked on the epic 920km, departing from the Brisbane CBD from the Kangaroo Point foreshore under the famous Story Bridge.

The pair are covering between 30 to 50km per day, with the aim of reaching

Bondi Beach in New South Wales on Australia Day the 26th January 2014.

They will have a support crew following them via car as they travel south along the coast that will rehydrate and feed the pair along their journey.

As the night falls, they scramble to the shore to eat, feed and allow their aching muscles to recover, whilst preparing themselves to do it all over again the following day.

Michael, 28, has decided to study medicine. "I decided to do this paddle with

my good mate Tony because it will be a huge adventure on the open ocean whilst giving me an excuse to keep fit and help a great cause."

Tony, 28, has a passion for health, fitness and the ocean.

"I’ve always dreamed of a way to combine these important facets of my life to make a meaningful and sustained contribution to the community," he said.

"This dream has taken shape and snowballed. It morphed into an event that would motivate and inspire people to take

control of their own physical and mental health. To be able to combine this with Australia's most beautiful coastline is a privilege."

Michael and Tony are updating their website (www.thebigbluepaddle.com) with photos and videos showing the progress and obstacles faced and hopefully their efforts will prompt numerous donations to the charity, Beyond Blue via the website.

As of the beginning of this week, they had raised more than $11,000. The goal is $20,000.

R

adio station KOFM have announced the appointment of Frank Barrett to position of lead caller for KOFM’s Footy Call Team, calling Knights games live in 2014.

Mr Barrett is no stranger to KOFM, having previously been “The Sports Guy” in breakfast and fill in lead caller on the KOFM Footy Call team.

He has had an extensive career in rugby league in previous roles with the Newcastle NRL, the Canterbury Bulldogs, the Newcastle Knights, Melbourne Storm, and most recently, Queensland RL. While welcoming Mr Barrett on board, KOFM also paid tribute to the iconic Gary Harley for his larger than life contribution

to the Call Team for the past eight seasons.

Upon joining the KOFM Footy Call Team, Mr Barrett said “KOFM is the voice of rugby league in Newcastle and anybody who follows rugby league understands the calibre of people I will be working with in the call team and the respect they have across the game.

“I’m extremely excited be able to work with them!”

KOFM’s Footy Call team is Frank Barrett, Michael Hagan, Marc Glanville and special comments from Brett Keeble.

The executive producer is David Collins.

The first Knights game will be heard on 1029 KOFM on Saturday 8 March from 4.15pm.

he Newcastle Jets and the Squadron Football Supporters Club have agreed to temporarily relocate Jets Active Supporters for the match against Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday, February 1 at Hunter Stadium.

After consultation between Newcastle Jets, FFA, NSW Police, Hunter Venues and the Committee of the Squadron supporter group, Jets Active Supporters will relocate from Bays 1 and 2 in the Eastern Grandstand to Bay 60 in the South-West corner of the stadium.

"We have worked closely with the Squadron so far this season with an Active Support Forum, distribution of song sheets and promotion of travel to away matches, and we are pleased to be able to continue to work on enhancing the atmosphere and Active Support at Jets matches." As well as providing our Active Supporters easy access to and from the Stadium via the Western Grandstand, we hope having the Squadron in Bay 60 will engage all Jets supporters and help create an even better atmosphere when we take on the Wanderers."

Grant Furner, President of the Squadron Football Supporters Club welcomed the move.

"Following an open discussion with our members and fellow Jets fans, we are very excited about this move,” Furner said.

“Bay 60 has some distinct advantages over Bay 2, including that it is closer to the players’ tunnel, the bay faces the players and the pitch, and it allows us to re-engage with the majority of Jets fans who now sit in the Western stand.

"While the move remains a trial for this match, we believe it could be a way forward for rejuvenating Active Support at Jets matches.

“We look forward to seeing you all in Bay 60 and encourage everyone in the Western stand to join in with the colour and noise for the team."

Central Coast have narrowly won the Quadrangular Series played against Newcastle, Illawarra and the ACT at the Entrance last Saturday & Sunday.

Central Coast defeated Newcastle by 7 shots, 116/109, to claim the trophy despite winning on only 2 of the 4 rinks. Lee Trethowan & Michael Stead both recording big wins to carry the day for the Coast. Trethowan beat Richard Girvan 30/12 & Stead downed Jason Stokes 27/13.

Newcastle retained the Challenge Shield when they convincingly beat the ACT 128/103 winning on 5 of the 6 rinks. Jack Ryan recorded the biggest win 35/11 over Cooper Pike, Australian representative Matthew Baus edged out Andrew Howie 20/19, Stokes beat Damon Jeffery 18/13, Girvan downed Andrew Ashlin 21/13 & Mick Beesley accounted for Terry McInnes 20/18.

The Newcastle District No.1 Grade Saturday Pennant Section Draw has produced four very interesting Sections.

Defending titleholders Valentine have drawn Section 2 which

appears the hardest, as it also includes last years defeated semi-finalist Belmont & quarter-finalist Beresfield.

The other three teams in the Section are Lambton, Charlestown & Soldiers Point.

Last year’s runners-up Raymond Terrace No.1 will start favourites to win Section 3. They can expect strong opposition from last years defeated quarter-finalist Teralba & Mayfield West, who have recruited Trevor Aitchison from Raymond Terrace.

Their other Sectional opponents are Cardiff, Wallsend & Warners Bay. Sections 1 to 4 both appear wide open. Fa'alogo as keen as ever MATT LOGUE

S

tanding on the edge of the field covered in sweat, Fa’alogo is sucking in the big ones after completing his second training session for the year.

The veteran prop has just come back from a break, including a family holiday on the Gold Coast, so he is understandably breathing heavily.

Fa’alogo also knows he is no longer the fresh-faced rookie who made his top grade debut for South Sydney back in 2003.

It’s why he has to work even harder to maintain the standard heading into his 12th season as a first grade footballer this year.

Asked if his lungs were screaming after another full-on pre-season session, the 33-year-old just grinned and remarked:

Knights prop David Fa'alogo. Picture: newcastleknights.com.au "They always do." "The older I get, the harder it gets. "But as long as I put in, do the hard work and put in my best, then that’s the main thing.

"It was tough and that’s what I expected, but I managed to get through the whole session and all is well."

As Fa'alogo is fully aware after over a decade in the game, pre-seasons aren't

designed to be easy. In fact, the summer slog becomes more difficult with every season as your body inevitably tires with time.

This may be true, but it hasn't stopped Fa'alogo from putting in the extra effort to ensure he keeps pace with his younger teammates.

The veteran bookend played 22 games in

his maiden season at the Knights last year and he is determined as ever to back up that performance again in 2014.

"It sort of makes me hungrier," he enthuses. "Last year was my first season at the Knights and it was hard work and effort when I first came back from the UK. "I wanted to show the boys and the coaching staff that I’m still willing to play and put my hand up.

"This year again will be no different, so I’ll be working hard and doing my best for the season coming."

There's no doubting Fa'alogo experienced a successful season in 2013.

On top of proving he could still cut it in the NRL after three seasons with the Huddersfield Giants in the English Super League, he also got a chance to represent Samoa at the World Cup. Fa'alogo played every game for the Samoans to help the tiny island nation go as far as the quarter-final stage, where they bowed out against the flying Fijians.

"It was a great experience," he says.

"It’s priceless to represent my Samoan heritage and enjoy the camaraderie that the players have.

ets interim coach Clayton Zane says he is focused on ensuring the club pushes on to the finals after the standing down of Gary van Egmond on Monday.

The Jets said the club and van Egmond had agreed to a mutual termination of the coach’s contract with recent results seeing the team sink to sixth on the A-League ladder. Former Socceroo Zane is likely to take the reins at least until the end of the season with Jets CEO Robbie Middleby declaring no other coaches had been contacted.

“Like every opportunity it’s up to me what I do with it,” Zane said.

“It’s a very exciting time for me personally. I’ve learned from Gary

Zane said Michael Bridges, who has been elevated to a player/ assistant coach role, has a big role to play.

“Enhancing the quality of coaching provided to elite young players in this program is paramount and this is why the club is recommending that Gary applies and is strongly considered for this position.

“From his time at the AIS, Gary has always had a passion and talent for youth development and we believe he would help the Emerging Jets Program take a major step forward.”

The Jets suffered a 3-1 away loss to Melbourne Heart last weekend, the home side’s first win this season. The next match is at 7.45pm on Saturday against the Central Coast Mariners in Gosford.
