housands of Lake Macquarie residents with a disability will soon be able to enjoy increased freedom and independence, with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) trial site expanding from Newcastle into Lake Macquarie. NSW Minister for Disability Services, John Ajaka launched phase two of the scheme at Caves Beachside Hotel last week. “I am pleased we are moving onto the second phase of the trial because it means we are getting on with the job of delivering better services to our most vulnerable, Mr Ajaka said. “The whole state should be proud of the good progress the NDIS roll-out has achieved to date. National Disability Insurance Agency CEO, David Bowen said the scheme was being rolled out on time and below budget. “We’ve probably topped 2,500 [people in the scheme] in the local area, he said. “The good news is the scheme is on time, we’re getting people in at the rate we were expecting, the scheme is actually under budget, the one that gives me the greatest amount of pleasure is that the satisfaction rating from the people who have been through the scheme is enormously high. Mr Bowen said anonymous surveying revealed only 2.5 per cent of people with a disability receiving funding through the NDIS were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with the scheme. Christine Conway, a client of Newcastle-based disability

Ageing, Disability and Home Care chief executive, Jim Longley, Swansea MP, Garry Edwards, National Disability Insurance Agency CEO, David Bowen, Disability Services Minister, John Ajaka, Charlestown MP, Andrew Cornwell and Life Without Barriers NSW director of operations, Lauren Murray celebrate one year since the launch of the National Disability Insurance Scheme service provider Life Without Barriers, said the NDIS had given her more independence. “I was very worried before the NDIS came on board because I was told that when I turned 65 I’d go into a nursing home and I couldn’t have my carers anymore, she said. “It was really worrying me because I’m 60 now, I’ve only got five years to

go. Then when the NDIS came on board they told me never to worry again because it would never happen and I’d have Life Without Barriers my whole life, an tearful Ms Conway told attendees. More than 2,000 Lake Macquarie-based participants are expected to start receiving benefits through NDIS over the next 12 months.
