isitors to Nobbys Headland may soon be greeted with a café, and possibly even overnight accommodation, once renovations on three of the historic cottages on the site are complete. Member for Newcastle, Tim Owen outlined his ultimate vision for the site at the launch of a new partnership between the State Government and Newcastle NOW, which will see the Newcastle icon given a facelift by supervised offenders on court-ordered community service and intensive correction orders. Mr Owen said the renovation of the cottages was a positive step towards increased access to the site. “We’re aiming to open the site two days a week and then eventually every day of the week,” he said. “What we are intending to do now is going to be a fantastic start. “There will be a new kitchen, new bathroom, and completely-refurbished old lighthouse keeper’s cottage and this work will allow the site to be used for a whole bunch of different purposes.” The structure of the cottages will not be altered due to their heritage-listing. Newcastle NOW chairperson, Edward Duc said there was a lot of community interest surrounding the use of the site. “Nobbys is one of Newcastle’s premier attractions [and] Novocastrians are passionate about ensuring it stays in community hands for community benefit, and we’ve had many offers of assistance,” he said.
Member for Newcastle, Tim Owen at Nobbys Headland with Michael Linguard, Ben Dulvey and Mitchell Fitzpatrick who will be assisting in the renovation of three heritage-listed cottages “Since we first opened the grounds to the public three years ago, over 93,000 have made the journey up the steep hill to enjoy the breathtaking views. “Nobbys makes an important contribution to the
community and this upgrade will attract even more people to our city.” The restoration of the lighthouse keeper’s cottage will be completed by the end of June, with the other cottages to follow in the next 12 months.
