T

he truncation of the heavy rail line into Newcastle once again dominated discussion as the Upper House inquiry into planning in the Hunter continued on Friday.

Greens MP and deputy chair of the committee overseeing the inquiry, David Shoebridge delivered a scathing review of the cost-benefit analysis of the project, questioning why the 2009 study commissioned by the Hunter Development Corporation found that the University of Newcastle’s city campus development was contingent upon the rail line being cut when evidence suggested this was not the case.

Raising the issue with past president of the Hunter Business Chamber, Richard Anicich, Mr Shoebridge insisted that the business case for cutting the rail line was “fundamentally flawed�.

Mr Anicich stood by the finding of the report. “I don’t think it is wrong,� he maintained. “Regardless of what the 2009 report said, the fact is, here in 2014 that commitment has been made [by the university], that spend is happening and it should be taken into account in the economic analysis.�

The University of Newcastle’s city campus development itself also came under scrutiny early in the day, with some on the panel questioning the decision to provide just five on-site parking spaces.

Director of infrastructure and facility services at the university, Allan Tracey said the university was relying on carpooling and park and ride initiatives to decrease the number of students and staff driving to the new city campus.

He said there would be a total of 366 dedicated off-site car spaces for commuters as well as more than 200 bicycle spaces on-site.

University of Newcastle, chief operating officer, Nat McGregor also addressed the panel.

He said he did not believe the university’s city campus development had ever been contingent on the rail line being cut.

A final hearing was held in Sydney at Parliament House on Monday, where representatives from the Department of Planning and Environment, UrbanGrowth NSW and the Property Council of Australia gave evidence.

A final report on the findings of the inquiry will be submitted to Parliament in March.

Searching for answers out of these senseless attacks Two incidents last week really make you lose faith in humanity.

Firstly, in our local area - the attack on the bus driver at Raymond Terrace after two passengers had been asked to get off after swearing and drinking alcohol.

The driver was punched and stomped on by one of the passengers.

It took a lot of guts for the driver to stand up for the safety and comfort of other customers, given that he probably knew what sort of response he was going to get.

He was simply doing his job and cops a beating for it.

The other hero was another passenger who came to the driver’s assistance as the blows were raining down on him.

That takes real courage - you just wouldn’t know what was going to happen to you as you stepped in to help.

The attacker could easily have turned his attention to the Good Samaritan and badly injured him.

The assailant is actually quite fortunate to be alive after raising a carving knife to a police officer when confronted.

As we’ve seen from other cases recently, police will fire their guns in their safety is endangered.

Thankfully, the situation ended with the driver not being too badly injured.

A bizarre postscript to the incident was the attacker masturbating in front of a female in the police station cells.

The magistrate in the attacker’s subsequent court appearance said that behaviour suggested methamphetamine use.

Apparently, this ‘gentleman’ can’t remember commit these offences because he was drunk.

He admits that he did do it - another passenger filmed the incident and it clearly identifies him.

I’ve written before that I just can’t understand the lack of self-control some people have when out in public.

Yes, I realise that alcohol and possibly drugs were a factor in this case, but these cannot be used as excuses when your actions affect other people.

The other incident was the disgraceful attack on the 86-year- old man in Sydney after he had withdrawn money from an ATM. Where do you start in trying to make sense of this one?

Many of you would have seen the video footage of this disgraceful attack.

The victim is lucky to be alive and the attackers are very lucky not to be facing a murder charge.

The fact that one of the females arrested is a nurse, really shocked me.

Hopefully, she is not employed in that profession much longer.

he Newcastle Mosque was the target of a heinous attack last week when a pig’s head was thrown into the mosque’s courtyard.

Police were called to the mosque in Metcalfe Street, Wallsend on Wednesday, after a worshipper discovered the decomposing head in a garden.

Newcastle Muslim Association spokesperson, Diana Rah said she was shocked by the incident.

“There is a misconception that if you throw a pigs head or body into a mosque it desecrates the site in some way and it can no longer be used for worship,” she said.

“That just isn’t true - but it’s very disappointing behaviour.”

The incident came just a week after an unprovoked attack on a 47-year-old Bangladeshi PhD researcher, Dr Iqbal Bair, who was punched and racially taunted as a left the mosque after evening prayer.

Both incidents were captured on CCTV footage, which has been handed over to the police.

Ms Rah said while having the mosque targeted twice in a week had left some members of the Islamic community fearful, they had also been heartened by the

“We want a thriving and welcoming community where diversity is embraced and where people can live without fear of violence based on their religion, colour, race, gender or age,” she said in a statement.

Wallsend MP, Sonia Hornery said she would be working with police to ensure these incidents did not continue.

“There have been very few incidents at the mosque since it opened its doors more than 20 years ago,” she said.

“But this is the second attack on the mosque within seven days and I will be seeking more information from local police to see what can be done to ensure that this stops.”

Newcastle Local Area commander, Superintendent John Gralton said police were taking both matters seriously and investigating all motives including any “bias motivation”.

“This type of incident does not belong anywhere in Newcastle or NSW,” he said.

“The command will use all resources to bring those responsible to justice.”

uch- loved ABC Newcastle Afternoons presenter, Carol Duncan may be one of 400 ABC employees to lose their jobs nationally, in the wake of Government budget cuts announced last week.

Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull confirmed last week that $254 million would be slashed from the ABC’s budget over the next five years, while SBS’s funding will be reduced by $25.2 million.

Mr Turnbull said modernising backend operations would allow the Government to save money without reducing the quantity or quality of what Australians view and listen to on the ABC and SBS. “With the right reforms and leadership the ABS and the SBS will emerge from this process much stronger organisations, capable of generating even better value from the money Australians invest in their operation,” he said.

“If the management of the ABC think they cannot find a five per cent saving through efficiencies, they are selling themselves short and letting down the people of whose resources and trust they are the custodians.”

and friends in the other media in this area, particularly, these days, at the Newcastle Herald, where almost every week there is another meeting discussing layoffs and making their opportunities of telling our local stories even smaller,” he said.

“At a time like this, it’s incredibly important that public funding is used in order

to make sure that this sort of thing can continue.”

ABC’s managing director announced on Monday that the broadcaster would be reducing its workforce by 10 per cent in order to absorb the budget cuts.

State editions of 7:30 on Friday nights will be scrapped, as well as Radio National’s Bush Telegraph program.

he State Government will take a business as usual approach to managing air pollution in the Hunter region, after a 10,000- signature petition calling for coal wagons to be washed and covered failed to gain traction in Parliament last week.

Speaking to the petition she presented to Parliament earlier this month, Wallsend MP and Shadow Minister for the Hunter, Sonia Hornery said the Government needed to take the necessary steps to protect the health of Hunter residents.

“John Mackenzie from the Hunter Community Environment Centre said, ‘this is a serious public health issue,’. “’Uncovered coal trains expose the community to elevated levels of particle pollution and cause a range of cardiovascular and respiratory health problems,’.

“Members should keep this in mind because more than 30,000 people live within 500 metres of the coal corridor between Rutherford and the Port of Newcastle and 25,000 children attend school within that space.”

Cessnock MP, Clayton Barr said he was particularly concerned about the increasing levels of coal dust falling from the

“We will continue to use a process of evidence - based gathering, analysis, option development, including cost benefit analysis and consultation with all our stakeholders.”

Mr Roberts pointed to the current Upper House inquiry into the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA), its funding of air quality projects in the Hunter Valley and initiatives like the Interagency Taskforce on Air Quality and the Newcastle Community Consultative Committee on the Environment as evidence of the Government’s commitment to protecting the health of communities along the freight line.

The findings of the inquiry into the performance of the NSW EPA are due to be presented in February.

aving captured the attention of art- lovers across the world, Patricia Piccininiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s controversial Skywhale will sail into Civic Park this Friday to mark the launch of the acclaimed artistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Like Us exhibition at the Newcastle Art Gallery.

M

erewether Baths reopened last Thursday, just in time for the summer swim season, following extensive refur bishments at the Newcastle icon.

The baths closed in February this year as work began on a $4 million refit, which included the installation of new pumping and pipework systems, construction of bleacher seating on the western side of the children’s pool and the widening of promenades to improve access.

The project was funded through the State Government’s Local Infrastructure Renewal Scheme.

The baths’ aging pavilion was not included as part of the upgrade due to lack of funds, however, a shortlist private sector investors interested in redeveloping the pavilion is due to be presented to Newcastle City Council in February.

Council has advised that the baths may close at short notice over the next few weeks as new equipment is tested and procedures are refined.

An ‘official’ reopening celebration for the Merewether Baths is planned for Saturday, December 13.

he city streets will come alive with the sweet sounds of music this summer, with the launch of a new placemaking project by Newcastle Now. Musicians of all skill levels will be able to belt out a tune on one of seven donated pianos placed around the CBD as part of the quirky Keys to the City initiative.

Creative father- and- son duo Dean and Sebastian Winter teamed up with Newcastle Now to execute the project.

Dean said he was inspired by similar projects in cities like New York, London and Amsterdam.

“In most cases these cities have only had one or two pianos so we’re a bit ahead of the pack with seven pianos,” he said.

“It certainly puts Newcastle in good company.”

Newcastle Now executive manager, Michael Nielson said the project made music accessible to everyone. “Anyone can sit down and play the pianos,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter if they’re a youngster bashing out Chopsticks or an accomplished musician showing off their Chopin.

“This is about creativity, fun, and opening minds and hearts to the joy of piano.”

Ray Mizzi plays piano in Wheeler Place Each of the seven pianos has been named in honour of the former owner who donated to the project. The oldest, ‘Sam’, came from one of Carrington’s oldest pubs and is dated

to around 1890, while another, ‘James’, was restored after surviving a house fire.

You can play the pianos at seven locations throughout the city, including Wheeler

Place, Nobbys Lighthouse, and the TAFE campus on Hunter Street.

Providing exciting events in the area will help to increase the visitor economy to our City

Swansea Channel undergoes dredging works Dredging work has begun in the Swansea Channel in an attempt to improve safety for boaters.

The $2.5 million project will see a channel 60 metres wide and 3.5 metres deep run through the popular waterway.

NSW Minister for Natural Resources, Lands and Water, Kevin Humphries said dredging the channel would pump an additional $3.7 million a year into the

local economy. The dredged sand will be transported to Blacksmiths beach where it will be used to rebuild dunes.

As a result, a small portion of Blacksmiths beach will be closed for around 10 weeks while this work is carried out.

The dredging project is due for completion early next year.

Lake Macquarie is a truly unique destination within NSW. It is an area of natural beauty and diverse landscapes, offering a combination of beach, lake and mountain environments within easy access of a capital city.

Maintaining and increasing tourism to Lake Macquarie City is high on the agenda for Council and providing exciting events in the area will help to increase the visitor economy to our City. Last week, I was delighted to announce the inclusion of the inaugural Lake Macquarie Long Board Classic as part of Surfest 2015, an event that will see many visitors descend upon our shores.

I am pleased we have the opportunity to be part of this iconic event, and to be part of Surfest’s 30th anniversary celebrations.

Surfest is one of the longest-running annual surfing events in Australia and on the weekend of 14 and 15 February 2015, Redhead beach will host the first event in Lake Macquarie City, bringing significant economic returns to our local economy.

As the year begins to wind down and the Christmas decorations start to come out of storage, it is an important time to think of those less fortunate. On Monday night, I had the pleasure of launching my annual Christmas Toy Appeal to help make a difference to families in need across Lake Macquarie.

Many families in our City and across the region don’t always get to experience the magic of Christmas, waking up to gifts from loved ones under their Christmas tree, due to their current financial circumstances. By donating to my Christmas Toy Appeal, you can help to ensure that no child in Lake Macquarie goes without a small gift under their tree this year.

Opal rollout continues

The rollout of electronic ticketing onboard buses and ferries in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie will be complete by the end of the year, according to Transport Minister, Gladys Berejiklian.

With 11 lesser- used paper tickets being retired from last week, the next stage of the Opal card will now get underway.

Ms Berejiklian said the rollout would take place over the coming weeks.

“Opal will take a few weeks to completely rollout and by the end of the month customers will be able to use their Opal card to tap onto any train and any local bus or ferry from Sandgate to Swansea and Bar Beach to Glendale,” she said.

“Opal is putting an end to queuing for tickets, fumbling for coins, and having to work out which ticket you need to buy.

“You only need to get your Opal card once and it’s cheaper for the vast majority of customers.”

Ms Berejiklian said with the new distance- based Opal system, some customers could pay as little as $2.10 for a bus fare, versus the current $3.70 one-hour paper ticket price..

The price of a journey on the Stockton ferry will also drop by 50 cents.

Seniors and pensioners will be able to travel all day for $2.50 using a Gold Opal card and the Newcastle CBD fare free zone will not be affected “at this stage”, according to the Minister.

TimeTen, single ferry tickets, one-hour tickets and Pensioner Excursion Tickets will continue to be available.

Opal cards can be purchased from more than 30 retailers across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, including 7-Eleven outlets, Woolworths supermarkets, and selected newsagencies, as well as online at www.opal.com.au or over the phone on 13 67 25.

Customers can arrange automatic top- ups of their Opal card, via a credit card or direct debit, or top-up manually online, over the phone or at an Opal retailer.

In March 2013, Mr Hill was commissioned by children’s charity, Life Education Australia to produce Giraffes in the City a-larger-than-life art installation for the 2013 Gold Harold Awards Night.

Giraffes in the City was a six- panelled canvas composition, measuring 7.2m x 2.9m collectively.

This and six artworks from his Liquid Canvas collection were auctioned on the night, contributing to the overall success of the fundraising event.

Earlier this year, Mr Hill created the Icons of Sydney in the Governor’s Room of The Imperial Peking Restaurant in The Rocks as a tribute to his hometown, Sydney. The body of work focused on the historic buildings and vistas in and around the old Rocks area.

Commonwealth Seniors Health Card For those over the current pension age of 65, you potentially have access to a great discount card - the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card. The Senior Health Card provides discounts or concessions on: Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme (PBS) prescription medicines; bulk billed doctor appointments; cheaper out of hospital medical expenses; concessional rail travel on Great Southern Rail Services, such as The Indian Pacific, The Ghan, and The Overland; in some instances, extra health, household, transport, education, and recreation concessions that are offered by state, territory and local governments.

In addition, Health Card holders automatically receive an energy supplement payment, which is an ongoing payment for pensioners who receive income support payments.

Things to be aware of in regards to the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card: As legislation stands now, allocated pension income stream payments are not assessed for Commonwealth Seniors Health Card. Furthermore, the Government has proposed to introduce the same assessment, of superannuation income streams as proposed to be the same as for Age Pension recipients and will align the deeming changes to allocated pensions from 1 January 2015.

If you travel regularly and are outside Australia for longer than six weeks, your Senior Healthcare Card will be cancelled.

However, the Government has proposed to change the sixweek absence from Australia to 19 weeks.

Transitional arrangements will apply for income streams held by card holders before this date. This places significant importance on retaining your Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, and not â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;â&#x20AC;&#x2122;losingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; it when you travel overseas for extended periods of time.

Am I entitled to a Senior Health Card? As a single you must earn under $50,000p.a, as a couple you must earn under $80,000(combined)p.a. You must also be an Australian resident, living in Australia, have reached Age Pension age, but not qualify for Age Pension (or receive certain other benefits).

Baus takes silver in Hong Kong DENIS BROAD, OAM DE NE NEWCASTLE DISTRICT

Raymond Terrace’s Matthew Baus has again performed with distinction for Australia winning a silver medal in the prestigious Hong Kong International Pairs.

Baus combined brilliantly with Matthew Pietersen (Cabramatta) to finish on top of their section.

They then defeated Billy Yim and Anthony Yip (Concordia) 10/3, 9/9 in the semi- final, scoring four shots on the final end of the second set to prevent the match going into a tie-break.

Baus and Pietersen then lost a tight final 9/8, 13/8 to the Filipino duo of Chris Dagpin and Angelo Morales, after leading 8/6 in the second set.

Australia also won a silver medal in the women’s pairs when Carla Odgers and Kelsey Cottrell were edged out 12/11, 10/10 by Sonia Bruce and Ainie Knight (Philippines).

Newcastle selectors this week announced a strong side for the quadrangular series against the ACT, Central Coast and Illawarra to be played at Canberra North Bowling Club on January 17 and 18.

The side will consist of four rinks of

open, one rink of seniors and under 25’s. New Zealand international Richard Girvan (Nelson Bay) will skipper the rink of Warren Shipley (Beresfield), Andrew Smith (Lambton) and Martin Bull (Kotara).

Baus will be in charge of Michael Abel (Raymond Terrace), Daniel Hill (Soldiers Point), and Lennon Scott (Raymond Terrace).

Terry Antrum will skipper the all Soldiers Point rink of David King, Lee Such and Jason Pietraszek. Matthew Sargeant (Warners Bay) will be in charge of Trevor Aitchison (Mayfield West), Brad Menzies (Valentine) and Jason Stokes (Raymond Terrace).

The seniors rink will be skippered by Michael Beesley (Beresfield) and the u25’s by Jack Ryan (Belmont).

Resilient Jets staying positive Stubbins praises much-improved attitude in draw with Western Sydney Wanderers PAUL MONFORTE

hile the Newcastle are still yet to taste victory in the 2014/15 A- League season, coach Phil Stubbins believes there is no problem with the harmony and spirit within the playing group following the 1-1 draw with the Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday.

“To come back at Western Sydney Wanderers is a tough ask so credit to the boys resolve.

We’ve done some searching and the players have got their reward,” Stubbins said.

“When the first goal went in, it was disappointing but I never felt anxious about how the game would end up.

Two notable changes to the Jets’ side were goalkeeper Ben Kennedy taking over from Mark Birighitti and Marcos Flores starting the match.

The Jets found themselves behind after 12 minutes after the Wanderers’ Tomi Juric firing his volley past Kennedy following a corner from Vitor Saba.

Newcastle levelled in the 27th minute through Flores after classy lead-up work from the experienced David Carney.

“To score the goal the way he did was a tonic for Marcos,” Stubbins said.

“He’s not 100 percent yet coming back but he did himself credit and made everyone supporting Newcastle very proud of his performance.

“His enthusiasm is quite infectious and to have that around the group on the pitch is a bonus.”

The Jets will play their third successive home game this Sunday with the local derby against the Central Coast Mariners kicking-off at 5pm.
