ormer Charlton MP, Greg Combet could have been Prime Minister, but turned the offer down due to ill health.

In an interview with the ABC’s 7:30 program last week, Mr Combet revealed that he was offered the leadership in the dying days of the Gillard Government by the then Prime Minister herself, but chose not to pursue the chance.

“It was in the second half of June [2013] and obviously the Government was in a lot of trouble and Julia Gillard was in a lot of trouble at that time,” he explained during an interview last Thursday night.

“I actually asked to speak to her privately and expressed my thoughts about what I thought needed to happen and I though that there needed to be a caucus ballot for the leadership to resolve the issue once and for all.

“Julia surprised me at that discussion by suggesting that she would support and she’d stand down in favour of me if I stood.”

Mr Combet said he “thought it was a pretty difficult manoeuvre to install yet another Labor leader with a month or two to an election” and was also struggling with a number of health issues, at the time so decided against challenging Kevin Rudd for the leadership, including a vascular condition in his leg and osteoporosis, which caused pain in his neck, shoulders and arms.

Amidst the horror of the MH17 disaster it is of some comfort to know that Australian police and soldiers are playing a leading role in the recovery of bodies and helping to return them to their respective countries.

We can now be sure that the process will be handled in a professional, respectful and sensitive way. I can only imagine the distress of relatives of the victims as they try to track down the exact whereabouts of their loved ones.

As 60 Minutes reporter Michael Usher showed on Sunday night, the crash site had not been secured or even properly roped off to keep people away.

Although as we saw, journalists are not all that welcome and have to undergo some questioning before being allowed to progress.

There are continual reports of fighting in the area which makes it very difficult for experts to safely work on the scene.

I understand though that it is a war zone and cooperation is probably not high on the agenda at the moment.

I think Tony Abbott's response to the situation has been quite impressive.

He's been firm in his condemnation of the incident while not getting carried away and throwing around specific blame at this stage.

The truth will come out eventually as to just why this plane was shot down and who is directly or indirectly responsible for it.

Until then, let's just worry about maintaining the dignity of the victims and ensure they are treated with respect in death.

f) I travelled down to Swansea last week to cover NSW Opposition Leader, John Robertson's visit during which he spoke to local senior citizens about the Federal Government's cuts to concessions and discounts.

Labor's Mr Robertson said all the things you would expect from an opposition leader, telling me after the meeting that "people are very nervous about the fact that this Government has a tendency to cut".

He spoke about how cost of living expenses that may seem small to those of us still in the workforce with a regular wage coming in, can have a huge impact on the lives of seniors and pensioners.

It really made me think about things such as being able to afford to register your car or to pay the water, gas or electricity bill.

Full credit though to the NSW Liberal Government for keeping the concessions and discounts going for another year by tipping in $107 million but there needs to be a longer-term solution.

It's all too easy for older people to become disconnected from society, especially if they live on their own.

Making it more expensive for them to live or to go on outings will just make the situation worse.

nner city residents have scoffed at the State Government's decision to reduce the maximum height of the controversial UrbanGrowth NSW/GPT development by 10 metres, labelling the move as a "tiny concession" for a community that had been widely disregarded by the Planning Minister, Pm Goward.

Speaking at a public forum at Newcastle City Hall, Newcastle Inner City Residents Alliance (NICRA) spokesperson Brian Ladd accused Ms Goward of being "captive to big developers" and vowed to continue fIghting high-rise development in the East End. "It appears we have rattled Ms Goward," Mr Ladd said.

"A reduction of two or three floors is not enough. ''We will be fighting for a reduction to a maximum height of eight floors, which is what the majority of Newcastle residents want and thought they were getting before March 2014."

The height of the tallest residential tower, on the site of the former David Jones car park, will be reduced by at least two storeys, from 69.5 metres to 58.9 metres, to ensure buildings do not exceed the height of the parapet of Christ Church Cathedral's nave.

Ms Goward said this would ensure the cathedral remained prominent.

"We always said these plans should and would be informed by the community," she said.

"That's why the Department of Planning & Environment has moved to reduce the

maximum building height to ensure the heritage integrity ofthe Newcastle skyline."

The change follows the lodging of more than 260 submissions regarding changes to the Development Control Plan (DCP) and Local Environment Plan (LEP) planning controls, the bulk of which related to the

height of the three towers on the UrbanGrowth NSW/GPT site.

The changes allowed for higher buildings and greater floor space on some sites in the CBD, and were brought about by submissions from the University of Newcastle and UrbanGrowth NSW.

aurie See fears that under private enterprise, his disabled daughter won't be looked after.

Mr See was just one of over 200 parents, carers and disability service professionals who attended a rally organised by the Public Service Association last week, protesting against the privatisation of the Government's Ageing, Disability and Health Care (ADHC) services.

Mr See, whose daughter currently lives in a group home in Maryland, fears that after he dies, no one will be able to effectively communicate these issues on her behalf.

"I want to retain Government services for the complex needs people who are in group homes and can't speak for themselves;' Mr See said.

"I don't think private enterprise will entertain the cost of looking after these complex needs."

Mr See said he was also concerned about the supply of services, a sentiment that was echoed by Stockton Centre nurse, Michael Grant.

"The clients are going from a service where all their needs are on site;' he said.

"They get looked after by people who know what their illnesses are, know what

their health needs and enjoyment and pleasure needs all are;' Mr Grant said.

"How can you supply it better if the services are all already here?"

Acting general secretary of the Public Service Association, Steve Turner said that the privatisation of services under

the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) directly contradicts its point providing choice.

"We want to make it quite clear that we support the NDIS and its implementation, but that was supposed to be increasing choice and resources for people with a

disability;' he said. "ADHC provides 40 per cent of the services to people with a disability so what it's actually doing is destroying choice."

Mr Turner said the Association also wants the Government to negotiate an employee protection package.

Council staff take action United Services Union members cast vote of no confidence in managment

ewcastle City Council staffwill meet at No. 1 Sportsground today (Wednesday) to hear the outcome of discussions brought about by last week's unanimous vote of no confidence in Council's management.

Prompted by last week's decision to privatise four of Council's inland pools and Beresfield golf course, United Services Union (USU) members gathered in Civic Park last Wednesday to air their grievances about Council's management.

USU organiser, Luke Hutchinson said members had been deprived of union representation during meetings, had their pay rate changed without notice, and had become increasingly concerned by the seemingly endless process of service privatisation and job losses brought about by the current Council.

He said alleged statements made by Council in the recent local government state award negotiations seemed to indicate that beach lifeguards may be the next group to be outsourced by Council. "'Likewise, we are currently outsourcing operations of our pools:" Mr Hutchinson said quoting from the alleged Council statement.

Aspokesperson from Council told thePost last Friday that USU's action was initiated as a result of their own tender submission

to operate Council's inland swimming pools being unsuccessful and labelled the union's allegations as mischievous.

In a letter from Council's human resources manager, Graeme Holland to Mr Hutchinson, obtained by the Post, Mr Holland that USU's motion was based on incorrect or incomplete information.

"It is also clear that the meeting was initiated because the union was unhappy

with the outcome of the pools tender and the fact that the tender submitted by the USU/staff was unsuccessful," Mr Holland wrote.

"Your 'vote of no confidence' is misguided."

Speaking to the Post last week, Mr Hutchinson said he was hopeful the issues could be resolved through discussion with Council and ruled out any strike action.

ewcastle City Council has put a callout to the private sector, seeking ideas from developers willing to revamp the aging pavilions at Newcastle and Merewether ocean baths.

Council received an unsolicited proposal for a restaurant and takeaway area at Merewether Ocean Baths in March, and given Council's limited funds, has decided to call for expressions of interest (EOI) for the city's ocean baths, including the possibility of commercial ventures on both sites.

Newcastle Lord Mayor, Jeff McCloy said the popular Icebergs Restaurant at Bondi Beach provided some inspiration for what could be possible at Newcastle and Merewether.

"Newcastle's two ocean baths are among the city's treasures and should be a drawcard for locals and tourists alike," he said.

"But our ocean baths pavilions are in a sad state due to lack of funds to upgrade them over the years.

"You've only got to look at Icebergs Restaurants at Bondi Pavilion and kiosks at Merewether and Bar Beach to see how these spaces and buildings can be used."

A 31-year-old man accused of shooting two men as they slept in a Jesmond house on Sunday did nor apply for bail when facing Newcastle Local Court on Monday.

Barry Keven Pobje was charged with

attempted murder after James Myers, 30 and Luke Convery, 21 were both shot in the head around 2.20am on Sunday morning as they slept in a house on Coles Street.

It is believed one of two women also sleeping in the house was the former partner of Pobje. Police alleged Pobje broke into the house and confronted Myers as

Newcastle West stabbing A 43-year-old man is recovering after being stabbed during a dispute in Little Birdwood Park. Newcastle West last Wednesday.

It is believed the victim had intervened in an altercation between a man and a woman.

About lpm. police were called to Kings Street following reports that a man had been stabbed. Upon arrival officers located a man suffering a stab wound to his chest.

He was treated at the scene before being taken to John Hunter Hospital for further treatment. He remained conscious during the ordeal and was later reported to be in a stable condition. The attacker fled the scene as police converged on the scene and launched a manhunt.

Boy approached in cardiff Police are appealing for information after a boy was approached in Cardiff last week.

Between 5.15pm and 5.30pm on Tuesday 22 July. an l1-year-old boy was riding a scooter on Brown Street. near the intersection of Macquarie Road, when a black van with black and yellow plates began to follow him. Police have been told the van continued to follow the boy into Lachlan Road when it pulled up beside him.

A male driver spoke to the boy, asking if he wanted a lift home. The boy kept riding his scooter and the van followed him to his home, before driving away. The boy alerted his father, who contacted police.

As officers attached to Lake Macquarie Local Area Command investigate the incident, they would like to speak to a man who may be able to assist with their inquiries. He is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 30-35 years old, with blonde shoulder-length messy hair and a nose ring. Mayfield stabbing A man appeared in court last week following an alleged stabbing in Mayfield on Tuesday July 22.

About 3.45pm, two males. aged 17 and 20, became involved in an argument over the phone, before the younger male walked to a unit block on Maitland Street at Mayfield. It's alleged the older male walked outside the unit block armed with three knives and stabbed the younger male in the wrist. The 17-year-old male was treated

by NSW Ambulance Paramedics for a laceration to his wrist, before being taken to John Hunter Hospital. Officers from Newcastle City Local Area Command were called to the location where they arrested the 20-year-old man. He was later charged with reckless wounding, refused bail and appeared before Newcastle Local Court last Wednesday.

Council will seek expressions of interest (EOn for the redevelopment and use of the pavilions at Merewether and Newcastle Ocean Baths.

Newcastle Newcastle's ocean baths are among the city's treasures and City Council should be a drawcard for the city. This is a once-in-a-lifetime Lord Mayor opportunity to invest in these iconic locations to keep them all council matters: viable for decades to come. We want to explore innovative newcastle.nsw.gov.au ideas to make our ocean baths even more attractive and useful community spaces.

While Council cannot fund the work to upgrade the pavilions and has been unable to obtain grant funding, we can still make this happen by working with other people. The EOIprocess may help us access private funding to assist with this long overdue upgrade work.

You've only got to look at Bondi Icebergs Restaurant in Sydney or the kiosks at Merewether and Bar Beach to see how these spaces can be re-used to the benefit of the community. Opporinnovative tunities may exist at both ocean baths for a commercial venture ideas to make to enhance our coastal experience. our ocean baths Completion of the Bathers Way continues to be Council's even more priority project and any improvements made to the ocean baths attractive will complement plans already in place for coastal infrastructure projects.

The EOI excludes the baths themselves, extending only to the pavilions and surrounding land. We will ensure that proper facilities are provided including: patrol room, change rooms, community space, beach cleaner area and public seating.

While there have been past investigations regarding possible development of the ocean baths, Council has not had an open EOI for the use of the pavilions.

It's time that we look at what is possible.

It's National Blood Donor Week, a time for us all to say thank you to Australia's 530,000 voluntary donors for making such an amazing difference to the lives of others.

Around 27,000 donations are needed each week to meet demand. Cancer patients, pregnant mums and their babies, people undergoing emergency surgery, road trauma victims and people with certain blood conditions all rely on blood products to keep them alive. Back in 1999, I was one of those people in need. After the birth of my first child, my daughter, I lost three litres of blood and needed a blood transfusion. I'm extremely thankful to those people who donated that blood, whoever they are. It meant I could actually look after my newborn baby properly.

Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to recognise and personally thank donors in our region who have donated blood more than 50 times - what an amazing milestone for these selfless individuals. It was a very personal moment for me as I reflected on the gratitude I have for blood donors.

My blood type is A+, as type A blood is common (around 38 per cent of Australians are blood type A) it is in constant demand and more is always needed. One in three Australians will need blood in their lifetime but only one in 30 actually donates. You never know when you or someone you love will need blood, and there's no better way to ensure it's there than to become a donor. It only takes an hour of your time and every donation helps save three lives.

A $2 million state-of-the-art blood donor centre is set to open in Broadmeadow next year, with hopes the new facility will help meet the projected need for blood over the next 20 years.

The new centre, which will be one of the largest in the state, will replace the existing Watt Street Donor Centre, receiving more than 14,000 litres of donated blood a year.

Australian Red Cross Blood Services spokesperson, lemma Falkenmire said once the development application for the site is approved, the Broadmeadow centre should open in mid-2015. "We've been investigating options and this site was chosen in response to feedback from blood donors and the community," she said. amazed by the people who live and work in my electorate. There are so many people out and about in our community doing wonderful things in many different ways.

I see people of all ages working tirelessly in voluntary capacities to assist others and support causes they believe in. I see young people reaching great heights in their sporting endeavours. I see groups coming together and working as a team to achieve. create and inspire others around them. For that reason. I am excited to announce the inaugural Charlestown Citizenship Awards. The inaugural awards are being sponsored by the Post and will celebrate the many people in our community who go above and beyond in their everyday lives.

The Awards will cover the entire electorate of Charlestown and will recognise and honour the outstanding achievements of the people who live here.

bequest to the unit in their will. "With no children and no one who needs money in our family, why not give [the donation to NICU] while we're still alive?" Mrs McEnearney said.

"It's rewarding to save little babies, and when you see some of them it's just a miracle they survive!'

Mr and Mrs McEnearney have 34 years of volunteering at the hospital between them and have no plans of slowing down. ''You get to relate to people;' Ms McEnearney said.

"It's a great friendship with everyone it's one big happy family!'

There are two major advantages of this strategy; 1. The investment earnings in a pension account are exempt from tax - comparative to the 15% tax you pay inside a superannuation account 2. The income you receive from the pension is generally more tax-effective than your regular income; a. Pension accounts may include both tax free and taxable components.

For those aged 55-59, the tax free component of the income payment is received entirely tax free, and a tax offset (up to 15%) may apply to the remainder (taxable component) of the pension payment, enhancing the tax efficiency of the income stream. b. After age 60, the income you receive from super is entirely tax free!

In effect, commencing a TTR pension means you are changing the composition of your income, which may allow you to pay less tax overall.

It is important to be aware that if you are working shorter hours and supplementing your income with money from your super, this could result in less super in retirement.

SW Opposition Leader, John Robertson visited Swansea last week to speak with seniors and pensioners concerned by the Federal Governments cuts to concession discounts.

The National Partnership Agreement which covered concessions for pensioners and senior card holders was scrapped earlier this year in the Federal Budget and concluded on July 1.

Mr Robertson said the State Government's decision to spend $107 million to fund the concessions for another year was a "stop-gap measure".

"What I've heard here is that people are very nervous about the fact that this Government has a tendency to cut;' Mr Robertson said. "They are worried about the $2.50 concession travel - we've seen that those sorts of things could be on the table. It's making people uncomfortable.

I think Governments have got a responsibility to make people feel secure.

Particularly the more senior people of our community;' "We owe it to them to make them feel more secure with what they are doing and the things they rely on aren't going to be put at risk;' Mr Robertson was joined by Labor candidate for Swansea, Yasmin Catley who said many locals had told her they

relied on the concessions to make ends meet. "There's quite a high seniors population in Swansea, and many have already told me they are worried about any cuts;' Ms Catley said. Do you care about what you eat?

Men can get postnatal depression too

It's funny how little some care about what they eat. I guess ignorance can be bliss... for a little while. But it's not that hard to research food these days. I found some interesting research on artificial sweeteners on a site called greenmedinfo.com.

If you were told to eat a synthetic chemical whose structure is only a few atoms away from the deadly pesticide DDT, and you knew that not only were there no long term human safety studies performed on it, but that it had been already proven in short term tests to have a lot of adverse health effects, would you still eat it? Millions of people including our children are!

Why? To save a few calories!

Some people actually believe it's a healthy choice. Sucralose has nice brand names like Splenda but despite the intended insinuation, sucralose is not a form of sucrose or cane sugar.

It's real name is 1,6-dichloro-1,6-dideoxy-BETA-D-fructofuranosyl- 4-chloro-4-deoxy-alpha-D-galactopyranoside. I guess that wouldn't sell too well though.

They make sucralose in a lab, using a complex process involving dozens of chemicals you wouldn't want to pronounce let alone consume. Basically, the chemists force chlorine into an unnatural chemical bond with a sugar molecule, resulting in a sweeter product, but at a price: a huge amount of artificial chemicals must be added to keep sucralose from hopefully digesting in our bodies.

The makers of sucralose say this chemical passes unchanged into the urine and faeces, when in fact, up to 11 per cent to 27 per cent is absorbed into the body (FDA, 1999).

In fact, the varying degrees to which sucralose is absorbed is used as a marker for gut and intestinal permeability to determine certain disease states. Once absorbed, between 1.6 per cent to 12.2 per cent of this chlorocarbon accumulates in the body.

Sounds to me like it's not really so sweet after all. I don't think my family should be eating it, but, as with everything, you choose what to put in your mouth, you make your own mind up.

This Sunday marks Father's Day across Australia - a time to celebrate everything great about being a dad.

Becoming a new dad and taking on the role of a parent can be a very exciting time... it can also be very challenging and stressful, leading to mental health difficulties in some men.

Beyond Blue report that about 5% of men develop postnatal depression in the first year after the birth of their child, and another 5% experience significant anxiety.

Postnatal depression in women is well known, but paternal postnatal depression is not something many men talk about.

Changes in personal relationships, feelings of increased responsibility and lack of sleep are a few things that can trigger stress, depression or anxiety in new dads.

The symptoms ofpostnatal depression in men are usually a little different to those experienced by new mums and can include increased frustration and irritability, becoming easily stressed, increased anger and conflict, feeling overwhelmed or out of control, feeling disconnected from their partner and friends and feeling fatigued.

Men who have a history of depression or a partner who is also experiencing postnatal depression are more at risk of developing depression or anxiety following the birth of a child.

Men who have limited emotional and social support, are experiencing financial difficulty and men whose experience of fatherhood is different to their expectations are also at risk.

When symptoms continue for more than a few weeks action should be taken. There is evidence to suggest that postnatal depression in one or both parents can have a significant impact on a child's development. One of the most important things we can do is encourage new dads to talk about their experiences and feelings. So dads, if you are not feeling so happy this Father's Day, do yourself and your child a favour and make time to talk with your partner, a friend or your GP for advice and help.

Whilst plastic has many terrific uses, it leaves a legacy of waste that fills our landfills, our environment and our oceans. The very worst effect of this ceaseless plastic consumption are not felt by humans but rather by birds and other wildlife who mistake the small colourful bits of plastic for food. These plastic bits clog the organs of these animals and sadly cause them to die.

One ofthe biggest contributors to this problem is the 13 billion plastic drink containers, which Australians use annUally. Of these 13 billion containers, less than 40% are currently recycled. The vast majority end up as litter or in landfill.

Since 1977 South Australia has been operating a successful container deposit scheme in an attempt to address this issue. The SA scheme places an additional cost (currently 10 cents) on plastic and glass containers at the point of sale. Consumers can then claim this money back when the containers are recycled.

Container deposit schemes are effective because they use a market-based system to tum something that previously had little value (rubbish) into something that does have value (10 cents worth). In this way they operate in a similar way to an emissions trading scheme.

One of the busiest sections of any pharmacy is the area where medicines for upset stomachs and bowel problems are kept - the so-called tums and bums area.

One of the most common bowel problems is constipation and this can be debilitating. Constipation usually happens because the colon absorbs too much water from your food. If the food moves through the digestive system too slowly, too much water may be absorbed.

The bowel motions are then too dry and hard.

If you think you have constipation, talk to your pharmacist or doctor who can recommend some ways to help. One way to treat constipation is by taking a laxative. There are various types of laxatives and they all work differently so it's important to talk to your doctor before taking laxatives. Types oflaxatives include bulking agents, lubricants, and stimulating/irritant laxatives. Severe constipation is the most common cause of faecal incontinence (or bowel leakage), especially in older people. This is because hard bowel motions are difficult to pass and may cause a partial blockage high up the bowel, resulting in watery bowel motions flowing around the constipated stool without warning. This is sometimes mistaken for diarrhoea.

n the midst of a difficult year for the Knights, three youngsters showed that the future for the club is bright with strong performances in the victory over the Roosters last Friday night.

Brothers Chanel (wing) and Sione (fullback) Mata'utia made their first grade debuts with Jake Mamo returning to the NRL side as the Knights looked to plug the gaps left by the absence of Darius Boyd, Akuila Uate and James McManus.

Coach Wayne Bennett lauded the efforts ofthose three young players along with the more experienced Adam Clydsdale and Tyrone Roberts.

"Sione, Chanel, Jake, they were outstanding against a quality football team," Bennett said. ''Young Adam (Clydsdale) was great at hooker. Tyrone, I think the stint at hooker helped him, he had a lot more confidence about him and I thought tonight was going to be his night, all the indicators were there."

OCal athletes have starred on the international stage with Gillieston Heights swimmer, Maddison Elliott and Nulkaba shooter, Daniel Repacholi winning gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Elliott, 15, broke the world record in securing victory in the 100 metre freestyle SB classification event, posting a time Of1 min 5.32 seconds.

The previous record of 1:05.63 was set by American Jessica Long at the 2012 Paralympics in London.

Elliott told ABC Radio the world record had been in her sights since the 2013 International Paralympic Committee World Championships in Montreal and that set out to break the mark in her qualifying heat earlier in the day.

"When I knew I didn't break it this morning, I really wanted to get it tonight:' she said.

Elliott won a gold, a silver and two bronze medal at the London Paralympics and two golds and a silver in Montreal last year.

She became the youngest Australian Paralympic gold medallist in London at just 13 years of age.

Maddison Elliott added to her impressive career record with gold in Glasgow

Repacholi's win in the 10 metre air pistol event followed a tense battle with India's Prakash Nanjappa.

Repacholi waited for Nanjappa to complete his final shot before steading his nerves to hold on to the lead.

"I put the gun down, looked at the time left, looked at his score and knew what I had to do:' Repacholi said.

"That was a normal shot and that's what I did. I'm pretty chuffed?'

Repacholi's gold took his career Commonwealth Games medal tally to four after winning the 50 metre pistol pairs at Melbourne in 2006 along with bronze medals in the 10 metre air pistol pairs (Melbourne) and the 10 metre air pistols (Delhi, 2010).

He also competed at the Olympic Games in Athens (2004), Beijing (200B) and London (2012).

Maitland's Simon Orchard is part of the Kookaburras hockey squad aiming to win their fifth consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal. Australia have won every men's hockey Commonwealth Games medal since the competition was introduced in 199B and got their campaign in Glasgow underway with a 7-1 thrashing of Wales on the weekend.
