ormer Charlton MP, Greg Combet could have been Prime Minister, but turned the offer down due to ill health. In an interview with the ABC’s 7:30 program last week, Mr Combet revealed that he was offered the leadership in the dying days of the Gillard Government by the then Prime Minister herself, but chose not to pursue the chance. “It was in the second half of June [2013] and obviously the Government was in a lot of trouble and Julia Gillard was in a lot of trouble at that time,” he explained during an interview last Thursday night. “I actually asked to speak to her privately and expressed my thoughts about what I thought needed to happen and I though that there needed to be a caucus ballot for the leadership to resolve the issue once and for all. “Julia surprised me at that discussion by suggesting that she would support and she’d stand down in favour of me if I stood.” Mr Combet said he “thought it was a pretty difficult manoeuvre to install yet another Labor leader with a month or two to an election” and was also struggling with a number of health issues, at the time so decided against challenging Kevin Rudd for the leadership, including a vascular condition in his leg and osteoporosis, which caused pain in his neck, shoulders and arms.
