MRS BROWN’S BOYS D’MOVIE Out Now

While it’s a given that Kris Kristofferson can write the heck out of a tune, the same can also be said of his acting as this early Marty Scorsese classic more than amply proves. A young woman’s husband dies suddenly and she is left to care for her 11-yearold son. The two of them set out for Monterey, California where she once was very happy and was employed as a singer. Kristofferson’s performance is one of the best in his career.

SWANS Thursday, January 22 • Manning Bar University of Sydney Union Powerhouse “no-wave” experimentalists Swans are heading back our way, next year, for what promises to be a thunderous performance at the Manning Bar. Consisting of Michael Gira, Norman Westberg, Christoph Hahn, Phil Puleo, Thor Harris and Christopher Pravdica, Swans have released an astounding twelve studio albums, with album thirteen To Be Kind continuing to push boundaries and draw in listeners with their ability to create sounds which are equal parts beautiful and confronting. After a 13-year break, Gira resurrected the Swans, releasing critically acclaimed albums My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope and The Seer. The latest album, To Be Kind was developed live during the Swans tours of 2012/13 and the result is two hours and ten tracks of mind bending symphonies of hypnotic and psychedelic tendencies.

RATED M

While I find absolutely no redeeming qualities in this dated, hackneyed sit-com, it appears that I am in the minority as the success of this flick at the box office proved. When Moore Street market-trader Agnes Brown finds her livelihood under threat from a ruthless developer, she and her family embark on a campaign to save her stall, aided as only the Browns will be by a motley troop of blind trainee ninjas, an alcoholic solicitor, and a barrister with Tourettes Syndrome. Hmmm. While there are a few chuckles this flick mostly falls flat.

As a final statement, from the band that brought us such monumental concepts as The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon, this is an astounding record. Based on various improvisations that came out of the sessions of their 1993 album The Division Bell, this deeply complex instrumental effort (save for the final track Lost for Words) demands repeat listens. The genius in this album lies in the fact that Pink Floyd have managed to create something completely fresh while wholeheartedly embracing their past. The Wish You Were Here-era It’s What We Do, but it is the closer Lost for Words that really captured this reviewer’s attention. The line “we bitch and we fight, diss each other on sight... but this thing we do is louder than words” is a perfect summation to Pink Floyd’s juggernaut-life yet tumultuous career.

It may not be Christmas yet, but the big gig announcements for 2015 just keep coming (Kenny Rogers, Billy Idol, Michael Franti, Cheap Trick, et al) and the latest cab off the rank is none other than Leo Sayer. From his debut smash hit the Show Must Go On to his 2006 remix of Thunder in My Heart, Sayer has carved an incredible worldwide career over four decades, including selling 80 million albums and picking up a Grammy award. His live performances are legendary and he’s touring Australia for the first time in four years to celebrate the release of his upcoming album Restless Years. This show will feature his new Australian band performing songs from the new album together with the hits you’d expect such as Long Tall Glasses, You Make Me Feel Like Dancing, When I Need You and More Than I Can Say. Leo will be rocking Wests Lambton on Friday, March 13. Tickets are on sale now at the club

Eloquence is the first taste of their soon-to-be-released debut EP so, you’d do well to get along to the Cambridge Hotel on Friday, November 28 to see what all the fuss is about.

f you grew up in the heady days of the 1980s’, chances are you spent a fair bit of time in your bedroom singing along to Perth post- punk/ indie pop outfit the Eurogliders and, if you were female you were probably doing your best impersonation of frontwoman Grace Knight’s “manic ballerina”. Well, its time to start reliving all of those memories as the Eurogliders are back and heading our way for a special show at Caves Beach next month. Breaking up firstly in 1989 after a slew of Aussie hits, the band reformed in 2007 for two albums and now they’re back again and as Grace Knight told TE things couldn’t be going better. “We’ve been having such fun taking the band out again for the past ten months,” she said. “How the whole thing started was that [rock historian] Glenn A Baker asked the Eurogliders to support the Boomtown Rats on their Australian tour, so Bernie [Lynch Knight’s main Eurogliders co- conspirator] decided to get a band together - however the tour fell over and we were all ready to go so we thought to ourselves ‘let’s just do it’ and we’re glad we did because it has been great fun.” If you know anything about the Eurogliders back catalogue you’d know that fun always featured largely in their output and Knight said it was great to

see that same sense of fun still evident at shows all these years later. “I may have to take an extra breath between songs nowadays, but it is all about having a ball onstage and it’s also great to see so many people from way back when who are still dancing right along with us.” Asked what she believed was the secret to the bands’ success and continued resonance, Knight had but one word. “Bernie,” she said. “In my opinion he is one of the greatest songwriters in the country, I mean those songs were written 20 or 30 years ago and they still sound fresh and relevant - that’s all such a testament to Bernie’s ability as a songwriter.” While most of their contemporaries might be content with resting on past glories, Knight said the Eurogliders were currently working on a new album which would feature reworkings from the back catalogue as well as some new material. “We really wanted to reintroduce ourselves to everyone so we decided to re- record some of our biggest hits along with some new stuff,” she said. “We’ve ben playing a fair few festivals lately so we really wanted to create a really celebratory festival atmosphere with this record.” TE is giving you the chance to win a double pass to the show. To enter, email your name and contact details with two of the bands biggest hits to editorial@newcastlepost.com.au with “Eurogliders” in the subject line by no later then 5pm on Tuesday, December 2. Winners will be notified by phone.

Let’s Be Cops

[Rated MA] Reviewed at Event Cinemas Glendale by Stephen Bisset

1/5

While there are a couple, and I stress a couple, of chuckleworthy moments in this “buddy cop” flick brings absolutely nothing to this already well-worn genre. Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr star as two idiots who decide to dress up as cops for a masquerade party they mistake for a fancy dress party and, rather chuffed with the attention they receive, involve themselves in various high-jinx, “you have the right not to buy a ticket to this yawnfest” they have run afoul of a group of Russian mobsters. Hackneyed dreck.

Hunger Games Mockingjay - Part I [Rated M] Reviewed at Event Cinemas, Glendale by Amelia Parrott

3/5

I’m going to be up front with this one and say I went into the latest installment of the Hunger Games franchise having not read a single book or watched a single film - blind. If, like me, you need a bit of a heads up on what the hell is going on before you even think about heading into the cinema to tackle this one, here goes. Having destroyed the Hunger Games, the annual battle royale in which 24 Panem kids fight to the death on TV, surviving “tribute”, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle) now finds herself in District 13 as the figurehead of a rebellion to overthrow the Capitol. Not only must Katniss come to terms with the pressure and responsibility that comes with being a rebel of the state, but she’s also got to save her boyfriend and fellow Games tribute, Peeta, who’s being held captive by the tyrannical Capitol president, Coriolanus Snow. Mockingjay Part I definitely lives up to its hyped-up status as one of the biggest blockbusters of 2014 - the not- too- distantfuture landscape looks great on screen, the musical score by James Newton Howard (The Dark Knight) is excellent, and Lawrence proves her Oscar- winning worth, breathing life into what is frankly a pretty bland script. It goes without saying that you’ll enjoy this a whole lot more if you’ve already got the first two films under your belt.

Swing when you’re winning While first shooting to stardom on the silver screen in the 80s Aussie smash hit the Man From Snowy River, actor Tom Burlinson is also quite a dab hand at singing, too. Particularly when it comes to the songs of Frank Sinatra. His first professional singing gig was as the voice of the young Frank in the Warner Brothers mini-series Sinatra, produced by Ol Blue Eyes’ daughter Tina and Burlinson has since travelled the world reimagining Sinatra’s formidable songbook. In 1998, he created the hugely successful Frank - A Life in Song, which played several times in the Australian capital cities as well as in Toronto, Canada and Las Vegas, USA. Now Burlinson is heading back to Newcastle with his Simply Sinatra show that is sure to delight diehards and newcomers alike. Created due to overwhelming demand, the show sees Burlinson sing more than 20 of the Chairman of the Board’s greatest hits including the likes of Come Fly With Me, All The Way, The Lady is a Tramp, That’s Life, Fly Me To The Moon and New York.

My dining partner decided to veer, ever so slightly, from the red meat path, choosing the chicken and rib combo and you’d have to travel pretty far to find ribs more succulent. The meat, basted in a rich and smokey Jack Daniels marinade, wasn’t falling off the bone - it was melting off, while the chicken, with a mildly spiced seasoning was grilled brilliantly and the accompanying mushroom sauce was so good that if all that was on offer was the sauce and a plate of chips, you wouldn’t be disappointed.

f you like more than a dash of Australiana with your dining experience, then you’d do well to make a beeline to Outback Jacks Bar and Grill, located at Stockland Glendale. Featuring a centrepiece of a mammoth crocodile perched precariously across the ceiling, along with a plethora of brightly coloured artworks featuring native Aussie flora and fauna and a colour scheme reflecting this sunburnt country, these guys definitely love the land of Oz. Couple that with some of the most friendly waitstaff I had encountered in quite some time and a menu as big as their croc mascot, this family- friendly steakhouse provided a dining experience that won’t soon be forgotten. Not wanting to peak too early in the evening, anticipating a mammoth main, my dining partner and I decided to start with a shared cheese and bacon garlic bread and it did exactly what it claimed it would to - pique our appetites with gooey, cheesy bacon goodness coupled with a tantalisingly crisp yet buttery bread. Yum. After labouring over the extensive menu for some time (it was always going to be steak, but thirteen- odd cuts makes it quite a decision), I decided to take on the 250- gram Angus Porterhouse and while it might sound odd, each morsel of this perfectly- cooked piece of beef was more succulent than the last. Further, while it probably would’ve been as sensational without the addition of sauce, Outback Jacks subtle, yet flavoursome pepper sauce has to be tasted to be believed. Add to that a fresh and zesty garden salad and a healthy portion of crunchy, fluffy, golden chips and you’ve got yourself a meal to remember.

ver the past 10 years, Australia has become a Mecca for surfing crazy, ocean slabs. These waves create monster barrels and are intensely dangerous. Their size and power are truly a spectacle. Years ago, Hawaii was the only place surfers could travel to in order to surf these big waves. In the mid- nineties, Laird Hamilton, with his Maui buddies, started tow- in surfing at a place called Jaws, on the north shore of Maui changing the global surfing landscape. The waves that could be seen breaking out at sea, were now the focus of what is possible. With the aid of a jet ski, these waves could now be surfed. Since then, surfers have been seeking them out and taking on the challenge of what is possible and what is not. The 12th ASMF shows us where the sport is now, by highlighting the best slabs on the planet - right here in Australia. Except the ultimate extreme action sequel - the stories behind some

of the up- and- coming, brave and talented Australian surfers - all captured through the lens of film director and cinematographer, Tim Bonython. “Each year I am searching for the greatest moments the ocean can offer,” Bonython said. “When it comes to surfers verses nature and the pure exhilaration of what the ocean can deliver, the Southern Hemisphere has the greatest playground of options on the planet. The 12th ASMF will be on at Tower Cinemas Newcastle on Saturday, November 29. Tickets are: Adult $30 Family of 4 ( 2 adult + 2 children under 15): $85 Children ( under 15 years old): $15 Senior/ pensioner: $25 TE is giving you the chance to win a double pass to the ASMF. Anu Brings the cheer album - the self- penned title track and a silky smooth rendition of the Five Stairsteps soul classic Ooh Child. “To me, the essence of Christmas is family so it was great to be able to get the kids involved in the album,” she said. “While Ooh Child isn’t traditionally a Christmas song, it’s a great song and the message definitely resonates at this time of year and the other one, Island Christmas had been kicking around for a little while I actually wrote it years ago when the kids were little, with them definitely in mind.” Anu, who will be heading to Lake Macquarie next month for the opening ceremony of the International Childrens Games and Carols by Candlelight, said that while it was definitely all systems go at the moment, things would be sure to ramp up next year as she celebrates 20 years of the release of her groundbreaking album Stylin’ Up. “While 2014 has definitely been a busy one, I feel as though it’s kind of a setting up period for next year with the 20th anniversary - it’s going to be huge.” Catch Christine Anu at the International Childrens’ Games Opening Ceremony and Carols By Candlelight at Speers Point Park on Sunday, December 7. Entry is free but be sure to get there early. The opening ceremony gets underway at 5pm and the carols kick off at 8pm.

ulti ARIA award - winning performer Christine Anu has certainly achieved a lot in her twenty-plus year career but she had never released a Christmas album - a balance she has well and truly redressed with her joyous new collection of Yuletide fare, Island Christmas. “It’s all so exciting at the moment, all systems go,” Anu told TE. “I’ve never promoted a Christmas album before so I don’t want it to get lost among all of the other music released at this time of year. But it’s such a fun album, I’m having great fun listening to it and I hope everyone else does, too.” Given the sheer plethora of Christmas songs already in the ether, you’d think selecting an albums’ worth to re-interpret would be a mammoth, almost insurmountable task. But for Anu, the task was all about bringing it back to a more personal level. “It wasn’t as much of a struggle as I first thought it might be because it was all about working out what Christmas means to me and trying to articulate that in the song choices.” Given that her son Kuiam and daughter Zipporah feature on two tracks on the

hen the sartorially correct Dave Graney last darkened Newcastle’s doors in June, he must’ve enjoyed his time at the Royal Exchange Theatre because he’s coming back and the gig is so nice, he’s playing it twice. Graney will be heading back to the venue for a double-headder next month and he told TE the vibe of the venue fit in with the current plan of playing off the beaten rock and roll track. “It’s such a cool little venue that has a really great European bohemian vibe,” he said. “When we were last on the road in Australia touring Fearful Wiggings [ Graney’s latest album], we wanted to play places that were outside of that rock and roll pub box and the Royal Exchange certainly fit the brief.” Graney and his long time musical and life collaborator Claire Moore have just come off a five week European stint playing with Harry Howard ( Crime and the “ity Solution, Those Immortal Souls] in his outfit Harry Howard and the NDE, with Graney taking on bass duties. He said the opportunity to step out of the spotlight somewhat was an attractive one. “Harry is an old friend from those Melbourne post- punk days and playing bass with him is great because we have

ith their last album, Seizures dropping back in 2009, it’s been a long time between drinks for Melbourne rockers Kisschasy. However, after what seems like an eternity, the band are heading up the mighty Hume for a show at the Cambridge this weekend and bass player Joel Vanderuit told TE that our fair city had always welcomed the band with open arms. “Newcastle was always really good to us and we had some really great gigs there so, it’s always good to get back. We did a bit of a trial run gig on the Central Coast last week and it went really, really

well so Newcastle should go off and people can expect a pretty eclectic mix of everything we’ve ever done .” So just what have the boys been up to since the release of the Seizures set? “The touring got pretty full on there for a few years and at the end of the Seizures touring cycle we were all pretty cooked so we decided to take some time away from the band, start families and businesses and enjoy the simple pleasures like going to bed before 2am,” he said. While Vanderuit added there were no plans for new material at the moment, it might just be a case of never say never. “We’re playing it by ear at the moment - there’s nothing solid planned but who knows what could happen next year.”

hirty years ago, at Mark Gable’s home in Church Point on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, the Choirboys were formed. Armed with a 4- track studio set- up in the bedsit, the band would gather to create music. No one expected these humble beginnings would lead them into the hearts of the Australian public and the history pages of Australian music. The iconic Choirboys are now an essential part of our Australian culture having penned one of Australia’s unofficial anthems, Run To Paradise, with other great Aussie rock hits such as Boys

Will Be Boys, Struggle Town and Never Gonna Die, the Choirboys epitomise the essence of the Australian pub-culture. But aren’t Choirboys a four piece band? Not this time. They are trimmed, taught and even more terrific. This is Choirboys’ chance to do it as a tripod and your opportunity to have a whole bunch of fun with them as a trio. It will be big and bad but still, it is acoustic, so there are the tender moments that only happen in this intimate environment. Catch the Choirboys at the Depot on Beaumont on Thursday, December 4. Tickets are on sale now. Visit thedepotonbeaumont.com.au for more information.
