While it does seem strange that the granddaddy of gansta rap - a man who with his posse NWA put the infamous phrase "f**k tha police" to tape should star in a buddy cop movie - it's a pleasant enough distraction nonetheless.

When a fast-talking guy (Kevin Hart) joins his girlfriend's brother (Cube)- a hot-tempered cop to patrol the streets of Atlanta, he gets entangled in the officer's latest case. Now, in order to prove that he deserves his future bride, he must survive the most insane 24 hours of his life.

While it is derivative and there are much better films in this genre, if you're looking for a bit of a weekend distraction, you could do a lot worse than this.

When it comes to the world of the parody song, there are few who do it better than Weird AI Yankovic and this, his fourteenth studio album, could just be the poodle-haired jokester's finest yet.

While there are many who would decry Yankovic as an unfortunate, annoying side effect of popular music, there are few who would be able to hold back a chuckle at his brilliant parody of Robin Thicke's misogyny anthem Blurred Lines reimagined as a not-so-subtle dig at people who use incorrect grammar on social media.

Other standouts include Foil ( think Lorde's Royals) and Handy (think Iggy Azalea's Fancy) and, of course the obligatory Yankovic pop-culture lampooning polka medely, Now That's What I Call Polka.

t's a pretty telling statement of intent that iconic Aussie pub rock outfit The Chiorboys' first single was titled Never

GonnaDie. STEPHEN BISSET

Thirty seven years since the band's inception they are showing no signs of shuffling off this mortal coil with the band bringing a special acoustic show at Lizotte's this weekend - not to mention a slew of activity slated for the band this year.

"I reckon that, when we recorded that song [Never Gonna Die], 1 pretty much knew that 1 was never gonna die;' front man Mark Gable told TE. ''We were pretty young and stupid at the time and at that age you think you're pretty much impervious to everything - you can smack into things, have things smack into you, and the like and you just bounce back - also, if you did happen to die it would be a glorious death like an assassination and all the kids would weep that their people's poet was dead. Honestly, though it is pretty amazing that we are still around and having as much fun as we are?'

When it comes to fun, Gable said that was pretty much the modus operandi for the Chiorboys these days, as people who attend the acoustic shows will be able to attest.

"It's basically going to be a heap of fun - it's not like working at all. We'll just be rocking up with our acoustics, making a few "woohoo" noises and cracking a

few jokes - 1 like to tell jokes onstage - 1 don't think they're funny, but 1 get a few laughs from the crowd from time to time so it's okay:'

Aside from playing their obligatory hits like Run to Paradise and Boys Will Be Boys Gable said they would also be throwing in a few acoustic renditions of some of ACI DC's classic numbers as the band will also be performing a series of AC/DC tribute shows in honour of Bon Scott's 40th anniversary of joining the band.

"Yeah we're doing these tribute shows later in the years and we'll be playing High Voltage and Highway to Hell back to back so we thought it would be good to throw in a couple in the acoustic show - and 1 can tell you working up an ACIDC song on acoustic isn't as easy as you might think;' he said.

"I mean Newcastle is a working class town that always appreciates a bit of Acca Dacca - or at least it used to be. What happened to the good old days of walking down Hunter Street and getting the s**t kicked out of you by some guy called Roy who worked at the steel mill? It's all very trendy now:' Gale said the Chiorboys were currently undergoing a bit of purple patch with two quite unique new albums slated for this year.

"Yeah it's pretty exciting - the first one is a pub rock instrumental album and the second one is all about Australian culture in the 1970S - so there's no shortage of activity for the Choirboys:'

If edge-of-your-seat action thrillers are up your alley, then you'll want to check out this latest flick from notable French director Luc Besson (Leon: The Professional, The Fifth Element).

Positing the question "what could humans achieve if they were to use 100 per cent of their brain?", Lucy tells the story of a woman who is unwittingly dragged into the criminal underworld and, when she inadvertanly ingests a new drug that gives her supherhuman powers, she has the ability to turn the tables on her oppressors, transforming into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.

While this latest in the long line of exorcism flicks does contain a couple of genuine scares, they are , unfortunately, not enough to save this backstory heavy, mediocre horror/procedural crime thriller. Aussie Eric Bana, hamming it up with a bad New York accent, stars as a tough and sceptical cop who begins investigating a series of increasingly creepy crimes with a basis in the paranormal. Bana hooks up with a hard drinking priest (Edgar Ramirez in a credible performance) who is schooled in the art of exorcism and the pair set about combatting a spate of demonic possessions that are terrorising the city.

While some of the scares do work well, a reliance on cliche and forshadowing music or repeated imagery pre-empting a lot of the tension, left this film lacking.

If you're looking for a decent "based-on-a-true-story" paranormal flick, check out The Conjuring, director Scott Derrickson'S previous effort The Excorsism ofEmily Rose.

The Rover

[Rated MA] Reviewed at Tower Cinemas. Newcastle by Amelia Parrott If audiences were after yet more examples of why Guy Pearce is Australia's most underrated actor, David Michod's latest offering, The Rover, delivers in spades.

This intense drama, set 10 years after the collapse of the global economy in outback Australia, follows Eric (Pearce), a hardened loner searching for his stolen car.

While on the road, Eric picks up Rey, (Robert Pattinson) the brother of one of the crooks who stole his Commodore.

The dialogue may be limited but that doesn't get in the way of an intriguing relationship forming between the duo.

This film is Australian cinema at its very best. The direction, performances, cinematography, music are all absolutely faultless. And the story, co-written by Aussie actor Joel Edgerton, is subtle, yet at the same time, edge-of-your-seat-Ievel fascinating.

If you can handle a fair bit of violence and Pattinson's nearindecipherable American drawl, get yourself to see The Rover quick smart.

From a quiet Sunday session at a local pub to a sophisticated private event, multi-instrumentalist Jason Bone's passion for music is unmistakable.

A prominent figure in the local and national music scene over the last seventeen years, Bone has performed with many original artists, bands and orchestras.

He trained at a young age as a saxophonist and with time has transferred his enthusiasm for music to other instruments such as guitar, drums, keyboard, and voice.

Jason has featured in numerous recordings on various instruments, and has toured both nationally and internationally. In 2005, Jason's band Fumi Boca were recipients of the Jazz Category award in the 1233 ABC Music Awards, after being nominated three years running.

Jason's diverse musical influence is seen through the wide range of styles he interprets as a solo artist.

He has an extensive repertoire that consists of music ranging from jazz though to blues and rock.

When it comes to a Jason Bone show, there isn't much musical territory he won't cover, so get along to see what all the fuss is about.

fter cutting his teeth as frontrnan with brooding Maitland-based rockers Sketching Cato, Dave Wells has stepped out from behind the safety net of a band with his debut solo EP, Carrington Street.

Named after the Maitland Street on which Wells grew up, the EPis a beautifully lilting folk-rock-esque effort that bristles with an unmistakable sense of place and a feeling of nostalgia that never comes off as overly sentimental or mawkish. ''With the lyrics, 1 really wanted to capture some vivid memories of where 1 grew up and the aim was to try and paint a picture in the listener's mind - it's a nostalgic snapshot of memories and events that happened as a kid growing up?'

While it is an EP that revels in personal experience, there is a universality in those songs that could be applied to most people's lives.

While the initial idea, when formulating the EP, was to create a kind of folk-driven singer-songwriter vibe on Carrington Street, Wells' vision eventually expanded to include a full band dynamic.

"I was working on the songs for about 12 months before the other guys [ Alasdair Caveney - bass, Scott Emblen - guitar, Tim Wells - drums] came into the fold.

"At fIrst it did feel a little bit strange but the boys have really put a lot oflight and shade on those songs which was just brilliant.

he universality of music and its joyous, celebratory nature will be on full display at the Civic Theatre this weekend when the Soweto Gospel Choir comes to town.

Since it's formation in 2002, the Soweto Gospel Choir have brought joy into the lives of countless people around the world and have collaborated with artists as diverse as U2, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Robert Plant, Celine Dion, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Peter Gabriel and Andre Rieu. Not bad for a choir who performed their first ticketed show at the Frankstown Arts Centre in Victoria in 2003.

Tenor and musical director Diniloxolo "Milton" Ndlakuse told TE that audiences could expect to be dancing in the aisles.

"It is definitely a celebration;' he said.

"Music is just so universal and this choir - we sing in six different South African languages - is a great example of this. The costumes also help to reflect the joy, happiness and peace that comes through in our music?'

Following the recent passing of Nelson Mandela ( who was one of their biggest fans), the choir has participated in services around the world celebrating and commemorating his life included the televised memorial service held in Soweto attended by President Obama and world leaders and a memorial for the Mandela Foundation in New York with

President Clinton and Morgan Freeman.

In recognition of Mandela's passing the choir will dedicate their Australian shows to his memory.

Ndlakuse, who has been with the choir since 2007, said there had been too many highlights to mention them all but performing with the likes of Bono was definitely up there.

"It was quite daunting for me because, in Soweto, the choir is so popular - it's like auditioning for Pop Idol or X-Factor;' he said. "I was very nervous, but luckily I got the job - it's been a very exciting adventure?'

The sixth sense fier discovering a gift to reveal the future and communicate with the spirit world as a child, Newcastle's Mitchell Coombes has parlayed his talents into quite a successful career. With regular appearances on Channel Seven's Sunrise and The Morning Show, a weekly column in That's Life magazine and two bestselling books in Sensing Spirit and Sensing Psychic, Coombes, the 2011 Australian psychic of the year, has become one of Australia's best-known seers.

Coombes will be bringing his show, An Evening With Mitchell Coombes to Wests this month and he said the prospect of doing his thing in front of the home crowd was an exciting one, particularly after his sold-out Newcastle turn last year.

"I can't wait;' he said of the show.

"I've always had a lot of support in Newcastle - I have a lot of Newcastle clients and my office is in Charlestown and given that I do a fair bit of touring both here and overseas, it's always great to come back and share my experiences with local audiences.

"I also just love the energy in Newcastle there seems to be a real open mindedness to the people that is just great?'

Coombes said the show would be similar in format to that of US medium John Edward and he will be passing on messages from audience members' departed loved ones.

"I would say that I'm almost like a

"I'll be getting messages from people's departed siblings, children, parents, friends. It's a very gratifying and humbling experience to be able to reach out to people in such a way?'

Coombes, who said that psychic ability has been a long standing trait in his family, first started seeing spirits at the age of three.

"It definitely runs in my family - I'd say psychic ability goes back around 400 years in our family. My nana taught me how to read tea leaves when I was six, but from the age of three I started seeing what I thought were little green people at the foot of my bed, which turned out to be spirits. At the time I thought that everybody could do this?'

Coombes said he has since developed a modicum of control over his gift.

"When it started it was pretty hard to control it but now I'm definitely better at it. I'd say it's kind of like me being a taxi driver who puts up a sign saying I'm ready to take a fare?'

He added that he believed everyone had psychic ability it was just about recognising the signs.

"Everyone is psychic - you always hear people saying things like 'I just know' about someone or something or they have a gut feeling - that's psychic intuition;' he said.

Brlngon the beefcake rguably Australia's biggest exponents of beefcake - the Sydney Hotshots - are back with a new show, Six Pack Sensation Extravaganza.

The show is a two hour celebration and a montage of tremendous acts - including fiery firemen to tame the temperatures, a seductive smooth officer, and suited gentleman and when the crowd gets too rowdy, policemen in uniform arrive to take control. Not to mention with exceptional assortments of lights, action, sex appeal, in an incomparable Las Vegas style.

Although the fun doesn't stop there as the lads grab their hats, boots and saddles and mosey on down to the Wild Wild West.

Renowned countrywide The Sydney Hotshots is the only national male revue touring act and has remained on top of the game for the past 19 years. Currently preparing for their international debut next year, Hotshots director, Paul Reynolds, said that the key to the success of the group is their attention to detail, the constant evolution of the show and their love of performing.

"The guys spend hours perfecting their moves, training to stay in shape and researching new ideas and songs;' he said.
