hey say you should never question a champion. Knights coach Wayne Bennett this year proved why. The seven-time premiership winning coach was brought to Newcastle by Nathan Tinkler to bring premiership glory that has evaded the Hunter since 2001, and while the club’s 2013 season ended a week short of the Grand Final, there is little doubt that Bennett has now stamped his mark on a side that is destined for greater things next season. In short, he has answered his critics in emphatic fashion. After missing the finals in 2012 - his first year in charge of the Knights - Bennett was questioned left, right and centre about whether he had the hunger, passion or ability to turn things around for a club so desperate to again sit atop of the rugby league world. In 2013, he proved why champions should never be written off - taking a side older than most through the arduous highs and lows of the NRL season, and all the way to the Preliminary Final against the Roosters last weekend. And he did it in typical Bennett fashion - playing his cards close to his chest, flying under the radar and, not surprisingly, saying very little along the way. While Bennett’s dream of an eighth title disappeared when inspirational skipper Danny Buderus was stretchered off Allianz Stadium last weekend, he ends the season knowing that 2014 holds plenty of promise and believing that 2013 should be considered a success.
“Overall I am really pleased,” Bennett said. “I know how disappointed I was last year, so to finish in the top four is a start for us and hopefully it gives confidence and more belief when we start the season next year.” The fans clearly believe, too - the chant and passion coming from the stands even when the result was obvious last Saturday night was deafening, and an inspiration. Playmaker Jarrod Mullen said the feeling of losing to the Roosters last weekend hurts, but he knows they’ll be back next year bigger and better. “The character we have showed in this finals series has been tremendous,” he said. “To get so close, one game before a grand final, it definitely hurts a lot more than losing in week one.” Perhaps it is that pain that will drive the Knights during the pre-season ahead. Newcastle’s two premierships have been built on courage and determination - and defying the odds. There’s a feeling emerging in Newcastle that what happened in 2013 is only the entree for what will be a stellar main course in 2014. The age of the squad, the betting odds and predictions of the experts will again dominate the pre-season. But when there’s a champion like Wayne Bennett at the helm, it is very difficult to shake the fact that something special is building in this sports-mad town. Today, the Post looks back at the season that was, with one eye firmly on the future, in this special coverage of the Newcastle Knights’ 2013 campaign.

he Knights’ NSW Cup team’s season ended at the same point as first grade when defeated 36-32 by the Windsor Wolves on Sunday. The Knights finished the regular season in second spot, but a 32-28 loss to North Sydney in the first week of the finals saw them facing a sudden-death match the following week against the Wests Tigers. Newcastle overcame that hurdle easily enough (38-10) but found the going much tougher against a Wolves side laden with NRL experience. NSW Cup will be departing the Knights. Peter Mata’utia has signed with St George Illawarra, Siuatonga Likiliki is off to the Gold Coast and Kevin Naiqama will be joining brother Wes at Penrith. The club recently announced veterans Matt Hilder, Timana Tahu, Anthony Quinn and the returning Clint Newton had been signed to provide experience for the next year’s NSW Cup team while also applying pressure for spots in the first grade team. Tahu and, in particular Quinn, had injury concerns during 2013 but give coach Wayne Bennett plenty of depth for the new season.

anny Buderus may not have been granted the fairytale finish all Knights fans, and a large proportion of other teams’ supporters, may have been hoping for but a quick look at his statistics suggests he will be more than satisfied with his rugby league career when he gets the time to reflect. Buderus debuted off the bench for the Knights in round 3 of 1997, the first of 259 NRL games, 24 Tests, 21 State of Origin matches and five matches for Country Origin. That was to be his only senior match of

the year with the vastly more experienced Bill Peden and Englishman Lee Jackson sharing the hooking role in the Knights’ epic grand final victory. Buderus played 19 NRL matches in 1998, mainly off the bench but he had fought his way up to starting hooker by the time the finals came around. Test honours arrived in 2001, the year before he made his debut for NSW in a 32-4 thrashing of Queensland in the opening match of the series. Many thought his NRL career may have been over when he headed to the English Super League to play for the Leeds Rhinos, but a strong return in 2012 and 2013 gave him the chance to finish where he started and for Knights fans to give thanks once more to the man known as Bedsy.

S
tate treasurer, Mike Baird, says the Newcastle port is on track to have a new owner by the mid-2014 with the transaction process reportedly “progressing very well.” Mr Baird announced the update in Newcastle last week, after a meeting with members of the Newcastle Port Corporation board to discuss its pending privatisation. “The expectation is that we will have the transaction completed, obviously should the cabinet make a decision to proceed, before the budget next year, that still remains the expectation,” Mr Baird said. “We’re certainly very positive about the interest both domestic and international and I think the city will be pleasantly surprised in terms of the quality of the field and the players that come to market.” The meeting coincides with Transport Minister, Gladys Berejiklian’s announcement that Newcastle-based consultants, GHD, have been appointed to undertake early scoping studies for Newcastle’s light rail, which will be funded through the sale of the port. “The important point of this transaction is yes, there is a new partner that comes with the port, but at the same time, we get the opportunity to revitalise this great city,” Mr Baird said. He added that details of the construction schedule for the light rail would be announced early next year. Whilst in Newcastle, Mr Baird also announced the establishment of a community liaison group that will hear and address community

the group established at Sydney’s Port Botany, which includes representatives from local councils, business groups and community groups.

Spare a thought for the men and women in blue
n light of Police Remembrance Day last Friday, I want to use this space to publicly thank every serving officer for their work. Those of us not in the force sometimes whinge and complain about how stressful our jobs can be. When it gets too much we can head out for a coffee to calm down. Police don’t have this option of ‘clocking off’ for a few minutes. It is a generally thankless job and one that is not valued highly enough in terms of salary. I have never understood why we don’t pay police officers significantly more. I have often travelled on trains late at night in the Newcastle and Hunter regions and have seen some of the ridiculous situations police have had to deal with. Two police officers trying to break up a brawl between 20 youths and having the mob turn on them. Passengers so drunk on the train it takes ten minutes to rouse them. Then having to escort them off and act as babysitters until an ambulance arrives. We want to hear your stories of praise for the police. Perhaps it was their kindness and understanding

has displayed in abundance under the master coach. Although Danny Buderus’ career ended in a painful and disappointing manner, it in no way detracts from a wonderful career. I must admit to thinking we had seen the last of Danny in the NRL when he departed for Leeds at the end of 2008, aged 30. But he quickly re-established himself as a key to the Knights’ fortunes and his absence will leave the team short on experience in the hooking role. We now turn our attention to the Jets in the A-League ahead of the opener against Sydney FC on October 11.

Council estimates 20 years to certify swimming pools in Lake Macquarie Amelia Parrott

ake Macquarie City Council will spend the next 20 years inspecting pools across the region to ensure they comply to State safety standards. The revelation comes as Lake Macquarie councillors voted last week to endorse its draft Swimming Pool Safety Inspection Program, which will see every Lake Macquarie pool registered and checked by council to ensure it has adequate pool barriers in place. Lake Macquarie City Council has one of the highest rates of pool ownership in the state, an estimated 20,000 swimming pools in the area. Council documents indicate that one swimming pool compliance officer will be employed by Council to carry out the inspections at a rate of 400 per year while Council’s building surveyors will inspect an additional 300 pools each year. At this rate it would take council in excess of 24 years to inspect each pool, without accounting for portable swimming pools. Independent councillor, Barry Johnston, raised concerns over the rate at which inspections would be completed at last week’s council meeting and called on the state government to come to the table and fund the project. “Even if Council is able to do 700 inspections per year, that’s still 700 into

20,000 so quite a large number,” he said. “And I can’t see the backyard pool inspections being done by anyone besides council staff.” State Member for Swansea, Garry Edwards, called the 20 year timeline “a total nonsense.”
“For Council to now turn around and say that this is some sort of cost shift by the State Government and it’s going to take 20 years, that’s one of the greatest loads of rubbish I’ve ever heard emanate from this particular council chamber,” he said. “You’ve already got the private certifiers
there – use those guys, pay them a fee to go [check the pools].” Mr Edwards said the State Government would be willing to consider assisting councils in rolling out the plan but warned that process could become “just another arm of bureaucracy.”

Hi, I’m Adrian Corbould, Senior Lawyer at Turnbull Hill Lawyers, and I specialise in Disputed Wills. My many years of experience show that many Wills are not legally binding and can be successfully challenged if they are unfair or have left people out unreasonably… and I have become an expert in helping people get what they’re fairly entitled to. Spouses, children and defacto partners of the deceased may be eligible to claim… and so may others in certain circumstances. You have a limited time from the date of death to lodge a claim so it’s always best to act quickly to get professional guidance on what your entitlements are. People will be delighted to know that often the legal fees of challenging a Will are paid out of the estate of the person who has passed away ... there are some simple conditions which I can explain. There have been many changes in the law over recent years leaving many questions to be answered... On Wednesday, 9 October from 6pm to 7.30pm I will be presenting a free information 4904 8000 or register at turnbullhill.com.au

By-pass: No development for Lake road corridor The corridor had been identified for acquisition in the 1950’s but in 1996, the Department of Main Roads wrote to Council advising that they did not foresee the future development of the corridor. More recently, Roads and Maritime Services has confirmed that there is no economic justification for the by-pass as the existing main road route between Valentine and Belmont has sufficient capacity to perform as an arterial road. Councillor Laurie Coghlan labelled the plan as “a road corridor to nowhere.” “This corridor was never going to be developed,” Cr Coghlan said whilst speaking in support of Council’s recommendation to abandon the project.

ake Macquarie City Council has dumped its long-held plans to construct a by-pass between Valentine and Belmont, more than 50 years after it first identified the land along the corridor for acquisition. Councillors voted last Monday night to abandon the development of the corridor and rezone the land that had been identified for acquisition by Council. The by-pass would have allowed motorists to avoid bends along Bareki Road and Croudace Bay Road.

Anniversary: Five years of Olive Tree Markets
I
n September 2008 The Newcastle Post reported that a new artisan market was to debut at The Junction Public School. Five years on and The Olive Tree Market has grown into one of Newcastle’s most successful cultural events, which has showcased the work of over 200 local artists and designers and is recognized locally and nationally for the high standard and uniqueness of the work on offer. Market Organiser Justine Gaudry said, ‘It’s been a fantastic journey watching the evolution of the market. When we started Olive Tree there was no regular contemporary handmade market in Newcastle and there was a very definite need for opportunities for artists and designers to test their work in a commercial environment, which valued the type and quality of their work. Ms Gaudry said, ‘Over the 5 years the handmade community and movement has blossomed and their has been a definite shift within the wider community which has seen people making a conscious decision to support locally made products rather than buying imported goods that are made in questionable circumstances and do not put money back into our local communities. The Olive Tree Market has seen many of the Olive Tree regulars develop from part time artists into successful businesses that in additional to trading at The Olive Tree Market run retail spaces, galleries and online shops on handmade sites like esty, madit and blue caravan.
Saturdays market will feature many long time stallholders like Michelle Smith of Rancho Designs who attended the first market in 2008 and designs beautiful jewellery, accessories and artworks and Julia Flannagan (pictured) of Frejj who creates stylish leather bags and accessories and Kyle Rodenby and Wyan McAllister who make designer jewellery and funky wooden clocks. Visitors can enjoy a daylong celebration including having delicious brunch or lunch while listening to solo artists & bands. Council adopts wait-and-see policy as opening hours remain restricted Amelia Parrott
N
ewcastle City Council has resolved to keep Beresfield Swimming Centre operating with restricted opening hours and season at least for the time been. Councillors voted seven to six against a motion put forward by Labor councillors Jason Dunn, Nuatali Nelmes, Tim Crakanthorp and Stephanie Posniak to amend the operating hours of the pool for the 2013-2014 season to be consistent with the operating hours of the centres at Mayfield and Wallsend, instead choosing to support a foreshadowed motion from Cr Allan Robinson that the operating hours be reviewed if there is a sufficient increase in patronage over the upcoming season. Cr Dunn labelled the decision as a “kick in the guts” for the Beresfield community. “This only serves to disadvantage an already disadvantage community,” he said. “Most of Ward 4 doesn’t even have footpaths, meanwhile Council is spending almost $4 million on Laman Street and $70,000 recruiting a new general manager.” Wallsend MP, Sonia Hornery, who presented a petition featuring nearly 5000 signatures of concerned Beresfield residents to State Parliament last month, was livid about the Council’s decision. “This arrogant attitude by the Council not only reduces the times that Beresfield

ratepayers can go for a swim, but severely restricts crucial learn-to-swim classes,” she said. “The residents of Beresfield have every right to be angry.” Ms Hornery also pointed the finger at Ward 4 Councillors David Compton (Liberal) and Allan Robinson
(Independent) for not supporting the Labor motion. “The people of Beresfield need all the support they can get to fight this inequality, and when two councillors in their own ward don’t stand up for them, that’s really bad form.” Cr Robinson said reviewing patronage
after the 2013/14 season was the fairest outcome. “All pools have increased their patronage while Berro has decreased by three per cent,” he explained. “I believe that if patronage sufficiently increases Council should reconsider the operating hours.”

GET YOUR SKIN CHECKED NOW!
The most important thing you may do for your health this winter is get your skin checked The sun-smart message is often neglected during the winter. Winter may prove to be the best time for a full skin check. As most people are covered up during the winter months, this minimises sun exposure to skin lesions and moles. This can allow for better dermoscopy viewing (a distinct magnifying light, which allows a doctor to closely examine spots on the skin). Remember to protect your skin this winter by applying 50+ sunscreen to exposed areas of skin. If you notice a spot on the skin that looks different from the others or is changing, bleeding or itchy, it should be examined by a doctor.

Star chef, Brett Graham, ready to cook up a storm at Hunter TAFE’s Newcastle campus last week
Amelia Parrott
N
ewcastle ex-pat and top Londonbased chef, Brett Graham, believes Government investment in hospitality training is key to Newcastle’s future success as a tourism hotspot. In Newcastle for an exclusive workshop with Hunter TAFE students, Mr Graham, head chef at the two Michelin star, Notting Hill restaurant, The Ledbury, and a Hunter TAFE alumnus, told the Post that Government’s needed to invest heavily in training future chefs or risk being left behind on the world stage. “I think what’s really important is that we keep training these young kids and really focus on them at this stage in their career when they need to be learning simple things like how to make a loaf of bread or puff pastry or ice cream,
all simple things which I think are diminishing because of the way I think training is going and I think it’s wrong. “If we start training people on the job too much and pulling away from their TAFE training, in years to come you’re going to see the level and the standard of chefs slipping.” “Tourism is such a huge thing for the Hunter Valley and Newcastle that when people come here we want to have the best food and the best possible service and for that to be a real drawcard. “Newcastle is clearly building a wonderful reputation and there are some great restaurants here... we need to keep working on that and strengthen it even more.” Mr Graham said the best advice he could give budding chefs was work with the best, keep focused, read as much as you can and always give 100 per cent. “It’s a hard job but it can be hugely rewarding.”

ccording to William Shakespeare ‘all hearts in love use their own tongues’, and that appears to be the case in the Penfold household. Maitland councillors Philip and Nicole Penfold have just celebrated their oneyear anniversary as the city’s first elected husband-wife team, a milestone they say is an important stepping stone in diversifying the council. “We need more of a mixture on the council – ethnicity, age and sex,” Philip said.

“Nicole is the youngest on the council at the moment, and in the previous term I was. “She’s also one of two women, with Loretta Baker.” Both believe that having a young family helps them bring a new perspective to council decisions, which, contrary to criticism, does not disadvantage Will, 11, or Matt, 5. “The hardest thing is balancing the kids being happy with our duties,” Nicole conceded. “But we’re very fortunate with the flexibility of our jobs, and there are a lot of things you can go to as a family. Philip and I also see more of each other now than when just Philip was a councillor.”

Search on for alternative derby venue after trampoline park forces move Amelia Parrott

he ladies and gents of the Newcastle Roller Derby League need a new home. After three years of drawing capacity crowds to its regular bouts at Gateshead Indoor Sportsworld, this week the league will be forced to make way for a trampoline park, to be built on the basketball courts where the Dockyard Dames, Bogey Rollers, Fort Smashleys, Harbour Hellcats and Z Law normally skate. With renovations about to get underway at the indoor sports centre, the league is now putting the call out for a new venue. “If anyone has a big venue we would love to look at it,” Newcastle Roller Derby League secretary, Jeanene Douglas, aka ValFreya, told the Post. “Basically the requirement is that there is a smooth floor. “Whatever it’s constructed of is neither here nor there as long as it is smooth so when we do fall and slide we’re not going to leave skin behind. “Ideally we’d like it to be central to Newcastle or have really good public transport links because that will help us draw the crowds.” Ms Douglas said the league has generated tens of thousands of dollars in extra revenue for its current venue and has promoted it regularly from social

Set a goal and get there.” And that’s exactly what Tony has done. Job seekers and employers: We’ve got it all covered
T
he aim of the JobsInTheHunter. com.au website is to make it the complete site for all matters to do with local employment in Newcastle and The Hunter. That applies to those starting their working life, stepping up on the career ladder or returning to the workforce. It will also be for those who provide employment services, including local skills training, be it where to get professional advice on resumes, training for skills or promotion, or how to make your workplace as safe and risk-free as possible. “The business model for JobsInTheHunter.com.au is based on the partnerships we form with businesses and entrepreneurial individuals who have something to contribute to regional development through an ever-expanding and higher skilled workforce,” said CEO Tim O’Brien. “We are looking to establish new partnerships with key businesses and operations in the Hunter so they can be part of the synergy of the site and, in turn, build their client base through high-profile exposure on a popular and well-read website.” And jobs websites are well read. They are favourite sites to browse even for those not looking for work but simply to see “what’s out there.” Business partnerships with
JobsInTheHunter.com.au are an efficient and cost-effective way to reach a large and interested audience, Mr O’Brien said. One recent partnership is with The Post newspaper, which links the two websites and provides a sample of specially highlighted jobs in the Post’s positions vacant columns Jobs In The Hunter’s website soon became a logical extension of an idea that started on the NSW Central Coast. Tim O’Brien lived on the Central Coast and worked in Sydney three years ago and was tired of endless comments that there were no jobs on the Central Coast. So he started a website called JobsOnTheCoast.com.au. It launched in mid-2011 and soon was answering the critics about the lack of jobs. Jobs On The Coast consistently lists about 200 jobs a week these days. Encouraged by many who had seen the success of that venture, Tim opened a website in the Hunter called, unsurprisingly, JobsInTheHunter.com.au in late-2012. The original success was soon repeated. JobsInTheHunter.com.au now consistently has about 400 jobs listed, even as employment in the region is starting to contract. “The conviction that drove both websites to start and to be such a quick success is that people choose where they want to live for all sorts of lifestyle reasons

that this is local, so you are looking for jobs – or you are recruiting – within the area where you live or do business.” The websites’ appeal for employers is that they can list and manage local job vacancies for free for up to 42 days. Additionally, advertisers pay just $189 to have more exposure on the website with a “Local Jobs Package” which includes a featured ad on JobsInTheHunter.com.au and a placement in The Post newspaper, which has a readership of more than 200,000 throughout Lake Macquarie, Newcastle and the Lower Hunter. The Local Skills Package is exceptional value because it can raise the recognition of the advertisement and provides a great deal more exposure. The concept was always expected to be a hit with small and family businesses, but large corporate and institutional employers as well as many recruitment firms have been quick to embrace it as well. JobsInTheHunter.com.au has already formed business partnerships with a range of local specialist businesses including Job Centre Australia, The Post Newspaper, Aurora Training & Professional Services, Forsythes Training, KARBEN Training Solutions, Logic Business Resources and All Coast Removals. Support and guidance has also been gratefully received from the local office of NSW Trade and Investment.

Remember to keep Sometimes the simplest way your wedding attire low-key is the best way
S
cience gives us so many great inventions and advanced technology that we sometimes forget good old human interaction and how important it is. There seems to be a baby boom on at the moment and this is an area where interaction and human support is very valuable. An Australian study highlights the benefits of one-toone care before, during and after childbirth. Scientists from the University of Sydney compared the old system of appointing a named midwife to oversee childbirth and standard maternity care that tends to be shared between different health professionals. They found that the simple act of using an individual caseload midwife led to a significant reduction in rates of non-emergency caesarean-section births. Women under the care of a named midwife were also less likely to experience a spontaneous labour, required lower doses of pain-killing drugs and suffered less blood loss after birth. They stayed in hospital for less time than women given standard care, and were more likely to breastfeed their babies. Under caseload midwifery, women were looked after by a named midwife or backup throughout pregnancy and childbirth. The midwife continued to make home visits for up to six weeks after the baby was born. However the midwives delivering standard care were only available on a rostered basis and supported by other hospital staff.

O
ne of your childhood friends is getting married – a spring wedding, how perfect – and you have just created the best outfit to wear to help celebrate their big day. You put it on, totally satisfied with how it looks and you think “yeah, I look good”, but you stop right there as a million questions flood into your mind. Am I going to upstage the bride? Should my dress be this short? Is my suit going to look like the groom’s? Should I try not to stand out? A wedding is an event that you can’t compare to anything else; you can’t get away with dressing like it is a birthday party or a work function. You have been invited to share in someone’s special day as a guest, which means that showing the couple respect should be your highest focus. I think the notion of dressing with respect at a wedding is where the traditional ‘don’t wear white’ and ‘don’t upstage the bride’ customs come from. When a woman wears something low-cut or super short to a wedding, it can come across as disrespectful. At the last wedding I went to, I was shocked to see one of the guests wearing a playsuit. Now don’t get me wrong, wearing a playsuit is fine but this young woman was wearing one that had no back and an enormous split down the front, there was more skin than clothing. She looked amazing, but still, to a wedding? More people talked about her outfit than they talked about the bride – that’s disrespect. This is the same as wearing something too casual.

Think fast to fight stroke
S
tatistics released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare show that, over the past 30 years, deaths from stroke have reduced by around 70%. That’s the good news; but the news is not all good. Whilst death rates have fallen, the actual number of strokes has risen. This year Australians will suffer more than 60,000 new and recurrent strokes – that’s one stroke every 10 minutes. Statistics indicate that one in five people having a first ever stroke will die within a month and one in three die within a year. There is a stroke death in Australia every hour. Stroke is a medical emergency. If you experience the signs of stroke or see them in someone else, seek immediate medical attention. Prompt action can prevent further damage to the brain and help make a better recovery. During the recent National Stroke Week the message coming from the Stroke Foundation was to think FAST. Using the FAST test involves asking yourself three simple questions about the person you suspect might be in danger – and then acting quickly: • FACE – check their face, has the mouth drooped? • ARMS – can they lift both arms? • SPEECH – is their speech slurred? Do they understand you? • TIME – time is critical. If you see any of the above signs, call 000 immediately. For more advice about treating and preventing stroke, call into one of the 2,000 pharmacies around Australia providing the Pharmaceutical Society’s (PSA) Self Care health information. For the nearest location phone 1300 369 772 or visit www.psa.org.au and click on “Self Care” then “Find a Self Care Pharmacy”.

Commission work continues
T
he Climate Commissioners may have had their budget scrapped, and their staff sacked; but they intend to continue the fight to inform the public under a new donor funded organisation: The Climate Council. Within hours of becoming Prime Minister, Tony Abbott asked the Environment Minister to dismantle the Climate Commission and to prepare legislation to remove the carbon price. Hours later Australia’s Chief Climate Commissioner and former Australian of the Year, Professor Tim Flannery, received the call informing him of this decision, and began preparations to discontinue the Commission’s operations. The Climate Commission was established by the Labor Government in 2011 to provide clear, accurate and independent information on the science of climate change. Over the course of its life, the Climate Commission collated the growing body of expert climate science from around the world, digested the material and presented it to politicians and the general public in a way they could easily understand. In doing so, the Commission published 27 reports, held over 20 public forums across the country and met with over 20,000 Australians face to face. With a wave of community outrage at the dismantling of this independent organisation, the Climate Commissioners took it upon themselves to regroup, establishing a non-profit organisation which would continue their work and in just two days raised over 500 thousand dollars.

Learning from History
G
eorge Santayana said” Those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it. For this reason alone, we should encourage our children to love History. History as a subject, has an important and crucial place in the modern Australian curriculum. It does two key things. It creates a sense of who we are as modern Australians by giving us an understanding of where we have come from. It also teaches key learning skills: of investigation and analysis. History reminds us of what makes us Australian, from the First Australians to the recent Sydney Olympic games. It helps to create a sense of Australian identity separate to that of our many immigrant ancestors. History is no longer just about learning facts and dates of events. Neither is it about only hearing from one viewpoint. In modern history teaching children are encouraged to investigate a topic and different perspectives and then come to a deeper understanding. These are key skills in the modern working world. Facts, dates and events are important. Children still learn about the heroic Aussie sacrifice at Gallipoli but they are also encouraged to consider the impact at home of the loss of a generation of young men, how it effect equality between the sexes, and the impact from the Turkish perspective. A good history curriculum will expose these diverse perspectives, identify how they have emerged and debate the consequences. Basically it teaches people how to think and reminds us who we are.

Child bedtime issues
B
edtime can be frustrating. In my household our son is usually begging for his third glass of water and our daughter’s talking a mile a minute and is nowhere near sleep. They’re both up way past bedtime. And you’re fed up! Well this is no longer an issue for my children (thank goodness!) I’ve got a few tips that worked for me on how to resolve the most common bedtime woes -- so you can all get a good night’s sleep. I have found that routines are helpful at all transition times, and the transition to sleep is no exception. We lead such hectic lives and in the majority of families both parents work, so at the end of a busy day it would be nice to have a bedtime routine that goes smoothly. Children need a series of predictable steps that they take every night to help them sleep. The routine we have is after dinner they have a bath, clean their teeth, get their PJ’s on and go up to their bedroom for a bedtime story. Sure we used to have the oh just one more story, or I need a glass of water or I’m scared, but we decided to set a routine- made it clear to the children what was going to happen and went from there. “For the younger children you can say, ‘You need to rest your body so you can go to preschool and draw, and run and play with your friends.’ You might say, “Mummy and Daddy love you too much to let you miss out on the sleep you need to be healthy.” Sounds corny but surprisingly it worked! Children need 9 1/2 to 11 hours of sleep, depending on their age, so most should be asleep between 8 p.m and 9 p.m at the latest. Miss the window of opportunity and your child will be wired rather than tired, I have been here before and it isn’t pleasant, don’t get me wrong, occasionally you will go out and this will be the case and that is ok.

Exit and Succession
T
o quote Steven Coveys 2nd Habit of Highly Successful People “ Always start with the end in mind.” This should be the number 1 Rule for anyone starting a business. As a business owner who has started a business from scratch you deserve to get the best return for all your hard work when it comes to selling your business. The time to start planning your exit strategy or succession plan is NOW. The sooner the better but a 12 month planning time frame is a minimum. Your main goal should be to maximise the value of your business. Your accountant or specialist in business valuations can assist you in calculating the financial value of your business which is usually calculated by multiplying the EBIT (Earnings before Interest and Tax) by the cap rate which is applicable to your Industry group. Maximising your EBIT is essential however, there are other factors that will also play a vital role in your business valuation which ultimately will determine what another party will be prepared to pay for your business.
Other Value Drivers to consider: • Buyers buy future profit and cash flow potential • 2/3 of the value of a business consists of assets that do not appear on the Balance Sheet, including Goodwill, Value Creation systems and processes and Sustainable competitive advantage • Business risk factors including, reliance on 1 or 2 key customers, supplier dependence, Government legislation and heavy reliance on the business owner are high risk areas for potential buyers. • Many businesses are undervalued due to various factors such as reducing profitability for tax reasons which drastically affects a business valuation. “You can’t have your cake and eat it too” • “Blue sky value” This includes Intellectual property, knowledge and expertise, future potential, strategic value and reduced level of competitive threat. Women’s business
T
his week I wanted to talk about an issue that is very important for Hunter business women and also the men in their lives. (It is a very important issue for women and men who aren’t in business too.) My colleague and head of customer relations at Greater Building Society, Lisa Presbury, spoke at the 2013 Hunter Business Women’s Network Regional Connect Conference last month. As well as sharing her personal story of how she rose through the ranks at The Greater, Lisa made a plea with women to make sure they take control of their finances. The statistics are sobering. The average full-time male worker earns about 17 per cent more than the average full-time woman. At retirement, the average superannuation balances of women are 57 per cent less than the balances of men ($113,000 vs $198,000). Of the Australians aged 65 and over on the single Age Pension, 73 per cent are women. Many more, 300 per cent more

It is really important that women take control of their Super and retirement planning. Despite working in financial services Lisa admits that a few years ago she got too focused on work and family and took her eye off financial planning. She was fit and healthy so it didn’t seem a priority. After talking to a financial planner from The Greater’s financial planning partner, Bridges, she updated her will to account for her son, set up a better personal savings plan and organised tax-deductible income protection insurance. Only 18 months later she was diagnosed with breast cancer and faced surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. A few weeks ago was Money Smart Week. This year’s championship (which takes in venues all around the state) has been a tight contest between current national champion Tim Edmondson in the hi-tech British built Gould V8 and current state champion, Mudgee’s Doug Barry in the V6 Buick powered Lola F300. So far Tim has managed to have the upper hand but Doug loves the challenge of this course and nobody tries harder. Currently lying third in the championship is veteran competitor Ron Hay. His latest mount is a technically fascinating car which marries an Italian Dallara Formula 3 chassis to a NZ built (largely motorcycle based) 2.4 litre V8. Beautifully made and works a treat. Ron will be eyeing up an outright win while looking over his shoulder for the sight of ex Formula1 designer Malcolm Oastler who is now back in Oz and living in southern NSW. Malcolm’s weapon of choice is another Dallara chassis, this one powered by a Suzuki Hayabusa motor cycle engine and as you would expect it is a work of art. Malcolm registered a strong third place at his last start and the smart money could be on him to come up trumps. Lying fifth on points is Phil Heafey in his trusty Mitsubishi Evo . A sedan an outright contender I hear you say? Yes indeed and if the conditions are not ideal Phil will make good use of the power and traction of his AWD machine to spring a surprise on the more favoured open wheelers. A couple of local drivers worth watching include Maitland driver

Peter Robinson (PRS openwheeler) and Kempsey’s Darren Read who’s recently stepped up to a lightweight bike powered Minetti sports car. Ashley Birks (Gemini) and young Pat Griffiths (Torana) have been stand outs in the Sports Sedan class while Newcastle Uni’s Prof Bill McBride
in his self-built BBB Clubman sports is setting quite a standard in driving as well as engineering. David Isaacs (Mitsubishi Evo7) and wily Coffs Coast driver Dave Morrow (Krygger Suzuki) should never be overlooked based on their top ten performances this year.

A popular stepping stone: TRI-CHALLENGE
T
he Tri-challenge Championship was started in 2000 by the MG Car Club, Newcastle to help MG Car Club, Newcastle, Kempsey Sporting Car Club and Tamworth Sporting Car Club to each stage an event, part of a series, that would attract many more competitors than they would otherwise have had. It would have the added benefit of giving Club competitors a bit of travel, different tracks, more competition and , with only four events, a step up from local events but not a State Championship. The Series has been very successful over the years with some drivers using it as a stepping stone to greater things and some happy to compete each year. The first event on 7th March at Mt. Cooperabung, Kempsey, was won by local driver, Darren Read (Mineti) followed by three more Kempsey drivers,
Dave Morrow (Krygger), Kim von Holt (Gladiator) and Alan Hindes (Piranha). The second round was held at Tamworth’s Oakburn Park Sprint Track and former MGCC local, Ed McCane in his Hi-tech Hayward won, followed by Alan Hindes (Piranha) and Peter Robinson (PRS) from MGCC, Newcastle. Ringwood’s third round near Raymond Terrace was nearly rained out, but a reasonable field attended with Kempsey’s Dave Morrow winning followed by Newcastle driver, Amy Mrcela (Elfin)and Kevin Edwards in his Mitsubishi EVO making good use of its AWD grip taking out 3rd place. With the general downturn in the economy affecting some competitors, numbers were down from a couple of years ago, but again the Series has provided relatively cheap club level racing and a bit of travel. All in all, a win for everybody.

I have it bad, with 3 race Torana replicas - Bond’s HDT ‘75 car, the Brabham/Moss blue Levi jeans car, and Allan Grice’s ‘76 LX hatchback. Add a ‘71 LS Monaro 350, 56 chev pickup and ‘57 chev hardtop and the shed is nearly full, “ nearly”. Yes, it does appear I have a very understanding family who either just shake their heads or say yes he’s in the shed building something. To them “ luv ya and thanks”. Without the help of people like Greg Snape from Classic Oz Wreck , Peter Robinson and the guys from Maitland Auto Parts, Jeff Holland from JP Fabrications who builds the best diffs in the country, these cars may have not happened and to all the race people I have met who have offered advice, help, friendship and at times criticism on driver ability and talent , thanks. rowing up in the sixties and seventies in Australia was a great time to be interested in Motorsport. With heroes like Bond, Brock, Grice and Harvey racing the Fords of Geoghegan, Moffat, French and others. One of my earliest memories is of sitting in front of a black and white tv watching Bathurst, and it’s a yearly event still to this day, not to be interrupted by anyone except say for the delivery of either food or beverage. After school, I completed an apprenticeship with Booths Holden in Mosman which sparked my enthusiasm to compete in Motorsport. Meeting guys like Graham Engel, Damon Beck,Graham Moore and some other guy called Peter Brock put ideas into my head which unfortunately at the time my pocket couldn’t match. 25 years later the cars I loved as a kid are now classics and very collectable. hile it certainly doesn’t hold a candle to the unabashed undergraduate hilarity of the original instalment in the franchise there is still plenty to like in this, the third ‘Hangover’ film. While it may rely on many of the tropes and set pieces that made the first instalment so successful, this, unlike many other sequels, executes this revisionism well. In the aftermath of the death of Alan’s (Zach Galifinakis) father, the wolfpack decide to take Alan to get treated for his mental issues. But, as is the case in with these things, everything quickly goes pear-shaped on the way to the hospital as the wolfpack is assaulted and Doug is kidnapped. Now they must find Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong, in another show stealing performance) again in order to surrender him to the gangster who kidnapped Doug in order to save him.

he refreshing thing about Woolongong stoner-rockers Tumbleweed’s latest album ‘Sounds From The Other Side’ is that, after thirteen years away from a recording studio, the boys bust out with as much fuzzed out rock and roll swagger as they ever did. Right from the get-go, it’s obvious that this is a band that isn’t trying to break any new musical ground, but rather than just being a pastiche of past glories, this is an album that can definitely mix it in today’s musical melieu. Standouts include the blistering ‘Dirty Little Secret’ and the infectious “oohs and ahs” chorus of ‘Night Owl’. While not reaching the same dizzying heights as their seminal ‘Galactaphonic’ album, this is still a damn fine example of fuzzed-out psych-stoner rock and roll. This is sure to bring many “Weedheads” out of the woodwork. Rawk.

f you were to compile a list of the best rom coms around, there would be few that wouldn’t include possibly the granddaddy of the all, ‘Pretty Woman’. Directed by Gary Marshall (‘Happy Days’, ‘The Odd Couple’) ‘Pretty Woman’ tells the story of Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) a ruthless businessman who specialises in taking over companies and selling them off. In Los Angeles on business, Lewis decides to hire a prostitute, but rather than your stereotypical streetwalker showing up, he meets the hooker with a heart of gold Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) and it isn’t too long before the sparks fly. They take a liking to each other and he offers her money if she’ll stay with him for an entire week while he makes the “rich and famous” scene. While this may seem a tad formulaic in light of the glut of rom coms inspired by the likes of Norah Ephron, it is still an endearing romantic romp that made Julia Roberts a household name. Naww.

t’s quite hard to believe that it’s been twenty years since the irrepressible Kim and Kelley Deal – alongside band-mates Jim Macpherson on drums and bassist Josephine Wiggs – released The Breeders’ seminal sophomore album ‘Last Splash’, which rocketed to both critical acclaim and commercial success on the back of
the omnipresent ‘Cannonball’ single and their renowned live show. In fitting celebration of this milestone, the lineup of The Breeders responsible for ‘Last Splash’ are hitting the road again and will be bringing the classic album to Sydney this month. So, whether you’re an old school indie kid from back in the day looking for a stroll down memory lane or a newcomer with an interest in timeless rock’n’roll, this is one show that, if you miss it, you’ll be kicking yourself. Guaranteed.

rom humble beginnings in the iconic Melbourne rock venue the Tote, to playing the likes of the Reading Festival at the behest of grunge icons Nirvana and Wembley Stadium opening for the Spice Girls, there’s little denying that Bjorn Again are not only one of the best ABBA tribute acts in the world but also the best tribute act, period. The band are set to head out on a national tour that promises, once again to be chock-a-block full of the ABBA glitz, frivolity and light-hearted parody that made them one of the most bankable and well-respected tribute act in the world and founder and manager John Tyrell told TE that the prospect of hitting Aussie roads was always an exciting one for Bjorn Again. “We are absolutely excited – it’s out 25th year this year and and I have to say that we always get the best reception
from Australia.” While Tyrrel said that Bjorn Again was, in essence a tribute band, they take it a step further, playing a little bit with the arrangements and poking-light hearted fun at the cult of personality surrounding the Swedish pop behemoth. With name slike Agnetha Falstart, Benny Anderwear, Frida Longstokin and Bjorn Volo-us – you know this is a band that doesn’t take itself too seriously. “Because it is basically a tribute show, we still do all of the hits and the costuming, the band and just the general quality of the performance is pretty spot-on,” he said. Tyrrel, who formed the concept for the show with Rod Stephen, said that in the beginning neither of them were particularly fond of ABBA – although that opinion has definitely changed over the years. “Rod and myself had played in various cover bands and we were both quite influenced by heavier bands like Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin and, in the mid-80s we had become quite

disillusioned with the New Romantic, synth sound that was permeating the Melbourne scene,” Tyrrell explained. “Then we saw ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ and thought it would be a great idea to start a kind of ABBA version of Spinal Tap.” The band have also been given ringing endorsements from ABBA themselves with Benny Anderson commenting on London radio that “Bjorn Again are the closest you can get to seeing ABBA.” “Yeah that was pretty
special.” Aside from that wrap, the band also has a pretty impressive list of fans. “Dave Ghrol is a fan – one of our biggest probably, we’ve played for Bill Gates, at Russell Crowe’s wedding and people like Robert Plant and Metallica have been spotted at shows which is just phenomenal when you think about it.” Catch Bjorn Again at the Civic Theatre on Friday, October 11.

Tony Sly tribute. Cape and Sly had been friends for years, with their respective bands Lagwagon and No Use For A Name sharing many stages over the years. In 2004, the pair teamed up for an album ‘Acoustic’ that highlights acoustic interpretations of each band’s songs before repeating the feat again in 2012 with ‘Acoustic: Volume Two’. Before Sly’s passing, the pair also formed a band, The Scorpios. “Since Tony passed away, there is not a day that goes by where I don’t have a massive hole in my chest, but I think shows like this are a great way to remember such a fantastic songwriter” Cape told TE. ‘I’m going to be playing with Brian [ Wahlstrom, from the Scorpios] and we both did so much touring with Tony so, while it will be a kinda sad occasion, it will also be quite cathartic.” Cape also promised Lagwagon fans a new album in the new year. Catch Joey Cape when he plays with Me First and the Gimme Gimme’s at the Cambridge Hotel on Thursday, October 3, in the Tony Sly tribute at the Cambridge on Wednesday, October 30 and with Bad Astronaut as part of the Hits and Spilts Festival at the Cambridge on Wednesday, November 20.

hen it comes to albums, twenty years is a long time between drinks by anyone’s standards. Listening to rockers The Baby Animals’ brilliant return to the spotlight, ‘This Is Not The End’, however, it feels as though the band never went away. Hot on the heels of a well-recieved stripped-back acoustic East Coast tour earlier this year the band – Suze DiMarchi, Dave Leslie, Mick Skelton and Dario Bortolin – are ramping things up to the nth degree for their national ‘Feed The Birds’ tour. “It’s just a really exciting time for the Baby Animals at the moment – everyone seems to be getting excited about the tour – we have fans requesting songs so it’s handy to have a bit of a back catalogue to draw on and we will also be shooting our first-ever live DVD which should be pretty huge.” DeMarchi said that after releasing an acoustic album of their greatest hits - Íl Grande Silenzio’ in 2008 it had always been in the back of the unabashed “rock chick’s” mind to ramp things up again with the Baby Animals. “I must say first of all that we are surprised and humbled by the reaction the album has been getting since we released it,”she said. Ï’d say that 90 per cent of the response has been amazing.
The original
Benvenuti Italian Restaurant “While we may have felt a bit of pressure to recreate what we did on ‘Shaved and Dangerous’ and the first album, at the end of the day we realised that it was all about making an album for yourself. “It was always in the back of my mind that I wanted to make a full on rock record – there were a lot of songs that were written that were maybe a tad slower than what we would normally write and they didn’t make the cut because we were really all about making a four on the floor rock album. So just what is it about the Baby Animals that clicked? “But first and foremost, I guess it’s because we always have a hell of a lot of fun, which I hope translates on the stage.” Catch the Baby Animals at the Cambridge Hotel on Saturday, October 12.

hey are arguably the tightest rock covers band in Newcastle at the moment. Their sound is unmistakably similar to the artist they cover. They create their own type of energy and performance with not an ounce of sweat left Its all about kicking the the proverbial they say. They are the V Dubs. Lead singer and guitarist Richard Boyle believes if you are not totally spent by the end of the show you haven’t done your job. This is also the mantra chanted by the musicians backing up Boyle - John Carruthers and bass and drummer Kai Chambers. With many years of experience behind them they say its always a good time to kick out the jams. Catch the V Dubs when they play at the Premier Hotel on Sunday, October 6.

et ready to start swooning Newcastle. Ricky Martin is in town. The Latin pop megastar arrived on Sunday to begin rehearsals for his national tour which kicks off in Newcastle on Thursday. Martin, who took a break from rehearsals on Monday to answer questions from the throng of assembled media, said that he was captivated by Newcastle. “It’s just beautiful,” he said. “I took a walk yesterday, it was very special, early in the morning, still dealing with jet-lag. It was 6.30 in the morning and I was taking a walk along the water and it was very special, very beautiful and very relaxing.” The voice behind such hits as ‘Cup of Life’, ‘Shake Your Bon Bon’ and ‘She
Bangs’ said that punters could expect a joyous celebration of culture when he takes to the stage. “It’s an intense cultural exchange,” he said. “I am bringing music from pretty much all over the world. I’m from Puerto Rico, a very small island in the Carribbean very influenced by African sounds, obviously Carribbean sounds, Latin sounds and obviously my greatest hits which was where I started to cross over into the Anglo sound. “All of that is going to be part of the show. It’s an hour and 35 minutes of intense adrenalin. “The highlight of my year was ‘The Voice’ so I’ve invited some of my artists – Team Ricky to be part of the stage so we’ll just see how it flows – it’s going to be special.” Catch Ricky Martin when he blows the doors off the Newcastle Entertainment Centre on Thursday, October 3.

nless you were one of the thousands of Novocastrians lucky enough to score a ticket to the NRL semi-final in Sydney over the weekend, chances are you would have been down at your local watching the Knights fight valiantly against Roosters for a place in the grand final. On Saturday night, kick-off found me chowing down on some tasty pub-grub at the Commercial Hotel at Boolaroo. While the outdoor dining area looked inviting on such a warm night, we opted
Commercial Hotel
2-4 Main Road, Boolaroo, 4958 1491 to dine inside in the bistro (close to the flat screen TVs) and quickly decided on a grain fed rump steak and chicken parma to see us through the first half of the game. Owner, Peter, reckons they sell more schnitzels at the Commercial than at any other pub and it’s not hard to see why. My schnitty was juicy and tender, truly top-notch, and served with plenty of zingy tomato sauce and cheese, fresh vegetables and a generous dollop of creamy mash potato. My dining partner went for the rump steak with mushroom sauce, which was quickly devoured between positive comments about the “extremely good” sauce. Both meals were huge and definitely left us feeling more satisfied than the evening’s footy result did.

fter sending both pundits and punters into a lather with their subtle and lilting sophomore album ‘Earnest’, Melbournebased alt. country outfit The Stillsons could very well have gone one better with their latest release ‘Never Gonna Go Your Way’. While the album still bristles with the nuanced folk-tinged pop that made ‘Earnest’ such a hyperbole generator – helped in no small part by the undeniable musical chemistry that exists between drummer/vocalist Cat Canteri and guitarist/vocalist Justin Bernasconi, there is a much more urgent feel to proceedings this time around – as evidenced on the album’s “beefier” tracks such as and ‘Feel So Young’. Canteri told TE that the band were over the moon with the way the album had

been received since its release. “We weren’t really quite sure what to expect but the response has been really positive. “Also, we ran a pozible campaign to finish off the manufacturing side of things and we gave some pre-release copies to pledgers and their response has been quite overwhelming too.” If ‘Never Gonna Go Your Way’ represents a band who has a finely honed sense of where they want to take their music, Canteri said that was due to the amount of touring the band had clocked up in preparation for the album. “We were doing a fair bit of touring up and down the East Coast and we had been playing a lot of the songs that ended up on the record for quite a while before recording them so there was definitely a sense of synchronicity in those sessions – it was very intuitive.” Catch The Stillsons when they play at the Wickham Park Hotel on Saturday, October 5.

Angus Raine, Executive Chairman and CEO of Raine &Horne says, “In our fast-moving world, knowledge is power and time is money, which is why Raine & Horne is proud to offer Investrac to our homeowners, buyers and investors.” With access via LinkedIn, Facebook or Google+, Investrac is the only online portal of its kind offered by a major real estate network, which allows customers registered with Raine & Horne to monitor property information, such as historical market statistics dating back 15 years, and track real time property data. “It’s a great tool that also enables users to follow the property market
in their local area and those suburbs and towns where they may have real estate investments,” Investrac provides property consumers with the number of sales in a suburb or town, the average sales price, median prices, recent sales and current stock. The impressive Investrac even caught the eye of Australia’s number one finance commentator Paul Clitheroe, who was the guest speaker at Raine & Horne’s National Conference held in August. “I’d heard about Investrac and that consolidation of data [Investrac provides] is just the sort of thing that someone like me is interested in,” said Mr Clitheroe, who is a founding director of financial planning firm ipac, Chairman of the Australian Government Financial Literacy Board and chief commentator for Money Magazine.

Kis Carens: Highest safety rating for compact MPV
T
he all-new Kia Carens (Rondo in Australia) compact MPV has been awarded a maximum 5-Star safety rating by Europe’s leading road safety organisation, Euro NCAP. The Kia Carens is one of only two compact MPV models currently on sale in Europe to earn 5-Stars in the 2013 Euro NCAP tests. The five-door, seven-seater Kia achieved high scores for Adult Occupant Protection (94%), Child Occupant Protection (76%), Safety Assist equipment (81%) and Pedestrian protection (64%). “From the beginning of the new Carens’ development programme, Kia engineers were dedicated to creating a compact MPV with the very best structure and safety technology to protect drivers, their families and pedestrians in the event of an accident,” comments Benny Oeyen, Vice-President Marketing and Product Planning, Kia Motors Europe. “In the last five years, Euro NCAP testing criteria has become tougher, making it harder for manufacturers’ products to be awarded top marks. It is a testament to Kia’s on going commitment to improving vehicle safety that we are able to once again achieve the highest rating with new Carens which has great appeal for families with an active lifestyle who seek both style and practicality,” concludes Oeyen. Euro NCAP testers awarded the Carens maximum point scores for side impact protection against a barrier, child protection for 18-month old infants, front seat whiplash protection and protection for pedestrians’ legs. The safety organisation also noted that new Carens is equipped with a ‘belt-up’ reminder for
all seats, a driver-set adjustable speed limiter and that all of the child restraint types for which the car is designed could

other hybrids, the Range Rover carries a full-size spare wheel and tyre. With its parallel 3.0-litre SDV6 diesel engine and 35kW electric motor, the Range Rover Hybrid models have returned impressive fuel economy for a vehicle so spacious and powerful - and so heavily laden, including roof-rack mounted expedition equipment. Fuel Economy has been put to the test on the water-logged mud tracks of the Kalmykiya grasslands in eastern Russia, so sticky that they were impassable to other vehicles, yet the vehicles are still recording more than 40 mpg on asphalt highways and busy urban roads through Russia and Uzbekistan. With 29 days to go to reach Mumbai, the convoy rested on its 23rd day in Uzbekistan’s capital city, Tashkent. The second half of this ambitious journey will feature the deserts, highlands and lowlands of Kyrgyzstan and China; winding tarmac roads climbing high into the thin cold air of the Himalaya mountain range; and a gradual descent through the lush greenness of Nepal to the hot plains of India. The expedition is due to enter Kyrgyzstan, the 11th of 14 countries on the Silk Trail 2013 route, two days after leaving Tashkent.

he Silk Trail 2013 expedition has reached the half-way point from its starting point at the home of Land Rover in Solihull, UK, to its destination in Mumbai, India. Twenty days after setting-out, the three Range Rover Hybrid prototypes vehicles have reached the deserts of central Asia on the ancient Silk Roads that inspired the name and route of this epic journey. The convoy has covered 8,411 kilometres and in its third week it travelled through Kazakhstan and much of Uzbekistan, lands of Arabic and Oriental people and cultures. The Range Rover Hybrids, in their final validation test before sign-off for production, have taken in their stride a variety of punishing conditions: asphalt surfaces riddled with deep potholes and layered with small stones; mud tracks that have been dry and rutted or wet and slippery; and dusty desert trails sometimes hard as gravel and sometimes soft as sand. While coping assuredly with such mixed terrains, in temperatures ranging from 17 to 43 degrees Centigrade, the seven vehicles have demonstrated outstanding reliability and between them suffered just one cracked windscreen and four punctures. Bill Siever, Jack Ryan & Chris Taylor starred for Belmont defeating Phillip Williams, John Bilby & Michael Lewis 28/6. The other two rinks

Kurri champions off to state titles
urri Bowling Club claimed both Zone 6 Champion of Champion titles last week when Nathan Dawson won the Singles and Greg Abel and Andrew Rees won the Pairs. These players now go onto represent the Hunter District and Zone 6 at the NSW Champion of Champion State Titles at Belrose in November. Congratulations to these players and The Hunter District wishes you well in your endeavours to win a State Championship. Another great story coming out of Kurri Bowling Club is 15 year old Jesse Herbert winning the clubs Minor Singles Championship. Jesse Herbert is the best Junior Bowler we have in the Hunter District and this win will further build to his very promising career. Congratulations Jesse, keep your head down and feet on the ground. Hunter District has a representative match against Newcastle on Sunday 2nd November at Kurri Bowling Club. Im sure our boys will put in a great performance and we ask people to get along to Kurri and the support our side. There will be 3 rinks of Fours taking on the Newcastle side as well as another 3 rinks of Fours of emerging players taking on Newcastles emerging players. East Cessnock and Maitland City are leading the BCIB Big Bowls Challenge after 3 Rounds with Kurri back in 6th Spot and East Maitland near the bottom of the ladder after 3 narrow losses. I wish all our Hunter Clubs well in this competition and hope
they can all finish in the Top 5 Semi-Finals in December. Nomination sheets are now out for the 2014 Hunter District Fours and Presidents Reserve Fours, see your club secretary to get your sides in. I missed out on mentioning last week that Bill George from Maitland Park won the Zone 6 Reserve Singles and will also represent Zone 6 at the State Playoffs at East Maitland. We wish you well Billy, keep playing strong.

Jack Newton International Junior Classic showcasing the best talent
A
n enthusiastic group of talented junior golfers will converge on Maitland and Kurri Kurri Golf Clubs on October 1-4 for the prestigious Jack Newton International Junior Classic. The tournament is the brainchild of Australian golfing stalwart, Jack Newton, and provides a competitive environment for the most promising talent from right around the globe. Just over 300 aspiring junior golfers will participate in the hot-ticket event with entries coming from as far abroad as Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and Japan. The International Junior Classic is a permanent fixture on the junior golfing calendar and is proudly supported by major sponsor, Srixon. “The Jack Newton International Junior Classic is an important stepping stone for many of Australia’s young golfers,” said tournament host and founder, Jack Newton. “This event has been pivotal in founding the careers of Australia’s well-known international golfing stars providing them with a platform to make a successful transition into the senior ranks,” finished Newton. Aaron Baddeley won the Jack Newton International in 1998, just two months prior to securing his first Australian Open victory. Aaron is a winner of the PGA tour and an enthusiastic supporter of junior golf Other international superstars that have added the Jack Newton International Junior
Classic in their list of achievements include current Masters Champion Adam Scott, former number-one female golfer Karrie Webb, twotime ladies European Champion Nikki Garrett and multiple Japanese Tour winners Brendan Jones and Nikki Campbell. Due to the Classic’s increasing popularity the event has been divided into two separate tournaments; the Junior Classic and the Sub Junior Classic. The Junior Classic will be held at the Maitland Golf Club for all competitors aged 15 years and over while Kurri Kurri Golf Club will host those players 14 years and under for the Sub Junior Classic. The 2013 Jack Newton International Junior Classic line-up will have contenders from most states and territories around Australia, with personal invites sent to those athletes who have shown real promise on the national stage. The majority of the field will be made up of Newton’s own Junior Golf members, spanning every corner of New South Wales. In the Junior Classic last years champion Su-Hyun Oh (Victoria) is not returning to defend her title but NSW powerhouse Shelly Shin (Concord) will be a favourite to take out the Overall Girls Championship. Shelly won the Sub Junior Classic last year and will definitely make an impact on the field in her first appearance in the Junior event. Shelly will have to contend with some tough competition in the form of fellow NSW junior Celina Yuan (Bankstown) and current New

Mitchell Venables (Bankstown). However, the strong contingent of Interstate and International players could upset some of the local favourites. Three of Queensland’s finest will be amongst the key contenders for the title. Blake Proverbs, Fraser Droop and current NSW Boys Champion Jack Sullivan will all be making the trek south for the event in the hopes of taking the illustrious title back to Queensland. New Zealander Kadin Neho is also a strong contender and will be looking to take the silverware back across the ditch. In the Sub-Junior Classic the race for the Girls title will be close. Leading NSW junior Doey Choi will be amongst those vying for the title. Hot on her heels will be talented interstate player and current School Sport Australia Girls Champion Becky Kay (QLD). Victoria’s Soobin Park will also be chasing down the title. While in the boys division ACT talent and current School Sport Australia Champion Josh Armstrong will be a force to be reckoned with. He will have to contend with Avondale’s Isaac Noh and Victoria’s Konrad Ciupek. Wagga Wagga’s Charlie Pilon, who is currently studying at The Hills International Golf School in Queensland, will also be one to watch in the race for the championship. The tournament will be conducted over 72 holes in six age groups for both boys and girls with winners to be honoured at a presentation ceremony attended by Jack Newton on the final day of play.
