Second chance cabinet Rudd unveils his new team in Newcastle, appealing for a ‘fair go’ Amelia Parrott

N

ewly reinstated Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, visited Newcastle on Monday to announce his new-look parliamentary cabinet and launch the National Disability Insurance Scheme, DisabilityCare Australia. Hunter MP, Joel Fitzgibbon, has been given a second chance in cabinet and will take on the Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry portfolio. Mr Rudd believes the Australian public are willing to give Mr Fitzgibbon a second chance after he was forced to resign as Minister for Defence in 2009 amidst repeated controversies. “I think four years in Coventry, which effectively is what Joel has done, has given him plenty of time to reflect and I believe everybody gets a reasonable opportunity for a second chance,” the PM said. “Joel has a passion for the regions and therefore a passion for agriculture...and I think he is a very good fit for the portfolio. “So I just say to people, give Joel a go. He has been four years on the sidelines. “I think everyone deserves and second chance.” Other appointments include Chris Bowen as Treasurer, Deputy Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, as Minister for Broadband, Communications and Transport and Bill Shorten as Minister for School Education. The frontbench will also feature more women than ever before. Senator Penny Wong will continue as Minister for Finance,

Housed in the former Westpac head office on Hunter Street, Soul Cafe has been renting the space for the sum of $1 per year for the past two years.

Entering an alternate reality

I

never like to be a party pooper. To rain on anyone’s parade. To be the glass half-empty type. However. I was watching our latest PM Kevin Rudd’s press conference in Newcastle on Monday morning with the feeling that it was all being conducted in some kind of alternate reality. Before you suggest that I might be due for a holiday, let me explain. As the PM named his new ministry, which includes a record number of female ministers and first time ministers, I couldn’t help but think that, in all likelihood, these people will only hold their positions for a matter of months. Until the election, that is. (Yes, I am obviously working from the premise that the Coalition will win the election; the same premise that Government MPs were working from last week when they brought Rudd back in from the wilderness). To me, there was a sense of futility underpinning it all. Not in the practical sense – I believe there’s certainly a need to appoint ministers as we can’t have education reform, disability care services and the nation’s finances rudderless until an election takes place; but from a big

picture view, considering what’s to come, it feels rather pointless. This was highlighted by the PM’s visit immediately after the press conference to the Hunter office of DisabilityCare Australia, where he launched the new service. The contrast between the morning press conference and later witnessing what it meant for people with disabilities and their families to see the launch of DisabilityCare, couldn’t have been greater. the lives of the people of the Hunter. However long the current arrangement lasts, the PM included, I must admit it is good to have Rudd back in front of the cameras. “Gotta zip, “rocking around and “just chill – these sound grabs are music to the ears of anyone who writes headlines for a living. For more Ruddisms – old and new – have a read of at Laura Jayes’ latest column on page 6. *** Lost in the hype and fanfare around the PM’s visit on Monday was the fact that Westpac CEO, Gail Kelly, was also in town to announce the extension of the lease provided to Soul Cafe, located in the Westpac building on Hunter Street. The cafe assists the disadvantaged with free meals and helps with medical and legal services. Refusing to be drawn into commenting on the ousting of former PM Julia Gillard, another trailblazing woman, Ms Kelly instead said she believes the economy will pick up following the Federal election. You can read more of Gail Kelly’s comments and about the work of Soul Cafe in our story on page 7.

desire to spend more time with his family, and look after his health are behind Charlton MP Greg Combet’s decision not to contest the upcoming Federal election. In a decision that surprised many, Mr Combet made the announcement that he will retire before the election over the weekend. “I wish to be more available to my family and friends, look after my health and focus more on my personal life, he said in a statement. The former Minister for Climate Change said his reasons for leaving politics were strictly personal and “were not attributable to the change in the leadership of the Labor party, although this decision has provided a catalyst for it. Mr Combet said he was proud of his achievements, naming carbon price legislation, while also thanking his supporters throughout the region. “I would sincerely like to thank my staff and the people of the Hunter region, and especially those in the seat of Charlton, who have so generously supported me, he said.

Slow motion debate Marriage equality support motion rejected a second time Amelia Parrott

G

reens councillors’ attempts to kick start discussions about marriage equality in Council have once again been quashed, with councillors voting six to four against Cr Michael Osborne’s procedural motion to discuss Council supporting marriage equality as a matter of urgency at last week’s council meeting. The result came on the same night members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI) community gathered in Civic Park to show support for marriage equality and protest against councillors resolving to let a motion that Council write to local State and Federal MPs in support of same-sex marriage lay on the table at an ordinary meeting in May. Cr Osborne told the Post that he had submitted a motion asking for Council to “simply support marriage equality but the motion had been censored by the general manager, Ken Gouldthorp. “The general manager doesn’t have the power to stop councillors putting agenda items through, he said. “He must accept all motions that come from councillors as long as they are in the required time frame of the adopted code of meeting practice, which my motion was, and so the general manager has acted illegally in blocking the motion. In a statement, Mr Gouldthorp said the

proposed motion that Cr Osborne sought to include was essentially the same one he had submitted in May and that his exclusion of the motion from the agenda was subsequently reaffirmed by the elected Council resolving not to consider

the last notice of motion. Lord Mayor Jeff McCloy and Labor councillors Tim Crakanthorp and Nuatali Nelmes were absent from the Council meeting due to ill health. @amelia_parrott

Cupcakes and pyjamas a hit at school event, organised by six-year-old fundraising for the foundation yet again. This year, the six-year-old hopes to triple her previous donation of more than $500 and kicked off her fundraising efforts with a pyjama and cupcake day at the school. Miss Petersen said she wanted to raise money to help others. “I have cerebral palsy and I want other people [with cerebral palsy] to feel special,” she said. Swansea Public School principal, Sandra Patterson, said Miss Petersen made a valuable contribution to the school.

“The kids just love pyjama day and I think by engaging the children, she’s not only publicising the need to support wonderful foundations like the Cerebral Palsy Foundation but she is also encouraging the kids to think about other people as well.” To support Miss Petersen’s fundraising for the Cerebral Palsy Foundation, another event will be held at Swansea Workers Club on July 6. The event will feature charity bowls day plus raffles including dinner vouchers, hampers and meat trays. @amelia_parrott

howing up at school in your pyjamas might sound like a scene from a nightmare to some, but for the student of Swansea Public School it is anything but.

Through her fundraising, Miss Petersen was able to meet her idol, Paralympian, Maddi Elliott. Now in Year 1, Miss Petersen, who suffers from cerebral palsy, is

Rocking, zipping and cooking with gas: Rudd’s return

elcome to the world of one KRudd. Where he “rocks around the joint” and talks to the “young folk” about “cooking with gas”. Every now and then he tells us “good people of the media” to “chill” before he concludes press conferences saying, “I’ve got to zip.”

Get used to these Kevin Rudd-isms. There’s more wild gesticulating and rock star mall walks to come. It can be said that Kevin Rudd’s return to the role as Prime Minister is one of the all time political resurrections. It’s the come back of all come backs, the ultimate revenge. If it was fiction, it would be

unbelievable. Here we are, three years later, considering a man for the prime ministership who promises he’s changed. In his first media conference since returning to the role, he was on time and refused to make any announcements without consulting his yet to be formed cabinet. The signs are good. The Gillard Government was shackled by the weight of the carbon tax, and all indications are that a Rudd Government will move to an emissions trading scheme. It will cost the already strained budget billions, but it’ll wedge Tony Abbott. The asylum seeker issue is a far more vexed one. Three years ago a dumped

Kevin Rudd warned his party not to lurch to the right – it did. Now he says he won’t lurch back to the left. Kevin Rudd doesn’t have the answer. In an extraordinary first media conference, he came out guns blazing, suggesting Tony Abbott’s “turn back the boats policy” could spark a diplomatic conflict with Indonesia. Big call – and one the Opposition labelled as “outrageous”. Mr Rudd will keep Julia Gillard’s prized National School Improvement Plan, but the term Gonski is, well, Gone-ski. He’s also confirmed that signal parent payments are on the Cabinet agenda. With a straight face he’s also called on the parliament to be “gentler and kinder to each other” when for three years he’s been plotting his revenge and undermining Julia Gillard, and therefore the Labor party, at every turn. For the former Prime Minister, her tenure has been a roller coaster. She is one tough lady and was dignified till the end. Like her or loath her, she faced one of the most difficult political environments in history. A minority government, sabotage from within and a strong element of sexism. Flaws, she has many, but she smashed the glass ceiling and forged a new path for women – and for that, I thank her. As we saw last week, politics is a brutal and unrelenting blood sport.

Light rail for Hunter Street

B

ack in 2010, The City of Newcastle commissioned the Hunter Street Revitalisation Master Plan and one of the recommendations of the plan was to leave the heavy rail corridor for use as recreational green space and for light rail to run along Hunter Street. In a community survey conducted with the development of the plan, 79 per cent of respondents agreed a suitable replacement for heavy rail would be light rail along Hunter Street. This week I have written to the NSW Government to consider pursuing this plan. I believe the city is best served with a high frequency light rail system along Hunter Street, connecting the broader community, shops and businesses with the coast to further activate Newcastle’s CBD. The light rail would be aligned in a co-shared zone in Hunter Street with low speed vehicle movements. People could jump on and off the light rail and visit multiple sites in Hunter Street.

Sorry: Bishop apologises to victims of abuse he Catholic Bishop of MaitlandNewcastle, Bill Wright, has issued an apology to the victims of sexual abuse by members of the clergy. A key objective of the revitalisation plan is to increase the inner city population through residential, commercial and university functions. This would be enhanced by a light rail system down Hunter Street. My office researched C-Train, the light rail transit (LRT) system in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, operated as part of the local government’s transportation system. C-Train has two main routes along Calgary’s streets, with a combined route length of 56.2 kilometres, and a connection from the light rail track to the Canadian Pacific Railway line. C-Trains are driven by overhead electric wires, completely powered by wind-generated electricity. Calgary chose LRT due to its lower longterm operating costs over buses and to address traffic congestion. Like Newcastle, Calgary is a river city. Today, Calgary’s population is 1.09 million, with the light rail system instigated in 1981 catalysing the city’s growth.

Future Directions

ast week, Council endorsed a submission on behalf of the Lake Macquarie Community, in response to the Independent Local Government Review Panel’s report into local government reform in NSW. The submission addresses the recommendations contained in the Independent Local Government Review Panel’s Future Directions for NSW Local Government document and was prepared by Council Officers. Council supports many of the Panel’s findings and recommendations, while also providing exciting new ideas for leadership in the sector and commentary on aspects we feel would be unnecessary, particularly in this region. The submission outlines aspects of the Panel’s recommendations in Future Directions that Council agrees with, aspects that Council agrees with in principle but with some comments, and aspects that Council does not agree with. One of the key visionary proposals of our submission is the regional Council of Mayors for areas in NSW. We believe this body should have legislated powers under State Law to make important decisions on matters of regional significance. Ultimately, strengthening

and uniting councils at a regional level to operate strategically and make the best decisions for the whole of the region. I am also very pleased to support the Panel’s recommendations that will assist with councils’ financial planning and ability to borrow funds more effectively, particularly their proposal to establish a Local Government Finance Agency to reduce interest costs and helps councils make better use of their borrowings. The submission also includes a detailed report into why a proposed amalgamation of Lake Macquarie and Newcastle city councils is not feasible, not necessary, and would be detrimental to the community. Lake Macquarie City is a region in its own right. The cities of Lake Macquarie and Newcastle are very different. Each has different requirements and systems of government, which determine the core services and long-term plans delivered by each council. It is important to have a voice and represent the best interests of our community throughout the process of State local government reform. The submission is available on Council’s website: visit www.lakemac. com.au for more information.

ne hundred-year-old Harry Bennett is proving that age is no barrier when it comes to using computers. Mr Bennett, along with 9 other residents of the Anglican Care Jesmond Grove Hostel are participating in the ‘Tech Savvy Seniors’ program, which teaches them how to use current technology. “A lot of residents can’t get out of the facility, so this is a good way for them to still be able to touch base with their

communities,” said Jane Meldrum, the Lifestyle, Wellbeing and Volunteer Coordinator for Anglican Care. Over the course of the 4-week program, the residents not only learn computer basics, but are also taught how to use email, Skype and play games. Some are also maintaining Facebook accounts. “It’s a really good reminiscence for them,” Ms Meldrum said. “They are able to stay in contact with their families, and we’ve shown them how to look up their childhood homes on Google Maps.” The program will conclude at the end of this month with a graduation ceremony.

Child contracts the fifth case of meningococcal in the region this year

A

child is in a stable condition in a Hunter area hospital with the fifth confirmed case of meningococcal disease in the Hunter New England Health (HNE) region this year. Close contacts of the child are being prescribed clearance antibiotics, and it appears there are no links between the case and any previous cases, HNE has stated. Public Health Physician Dr Craig Dalton said seeking medical attention quickly may prevent the development of serious complications. “Meningococcal disease may be very severe and the community needs to be on the alert for its symptoms,” he said. “If anyone suspects meningococcal disease, they should seek medical attention immediately,” Dr Dalton said. Up to 10 per cent of patients with invasive meningococcal disease in Australia die as a result of the infection. The first symptoms of meningococcal disease may include pain in the legs, cold hands and feet and abnormal skin colour. Later symptoms may include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, dislike of bright lights, nausea and vomiting, a rash of reddish-purple spots or bruises and drowsiness. Babies with the infection can be irritable, not feed properly and have an abnormal cry. “Meningococcal infection does not spread easily. It is spread by secretions from the nose and throat of a person who is carrying it and close and prolonged contact is needed to pass it on,” Dr Dalton said. “It does not appear to be spread through saliva or by sharing drinks or cigarettes.” He stressed that while meningococcal disease could be serious, in most cases, early detection and treatment resulted in a complete recovery. In 2012, there were nine confirmed cases of meningococcal disease in the Hunter New England Local Health District. There were 15 confirmed cases in 2011, 13 in 2010 and 14 in 2009.

olice are investigating after a man was seriously burned during an incident near Maitland. At about 3.30am on Saturday, June 29, emergency services attended a residence in Bolwarra Heights where they found a 32-yearold man with burns to 80 per cent of his body. The man was transported by rescue helicopter to Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital for treatment. He is reported to be in a serious but stable condition. Police established a crime scene at the premises, which is being examined by specialist forensic officers. Early inquiries suggest the man was doused with flammable liquid and set alight by a female intruder in the residence. Police have been told the woman fled on foot following the incident. Investigators would like to speak with a woman who may be able to assist with their inquiries.

Roadblock: Residents share concerns over infrastructure

Ryan Park and Sharon Claydon with Mati Morel of Thornton, Erin Melrose and Ann McGavin, both of Beresfield

Melissah Comber

T

hornton and Beresfield residents have named local infrastructure as their biggest issue of concern at a community roads forum, held by State Shadow Roads Minister Ryan Park, and Federal candidate for Newcastle, Sharon Claydon, last week. Concerned residents met with Mr Park and Ms Claydon at Thornton Public School to discuss the state of local roads, noncompliant traffic and a lack of footpaths. “We want to hear concerns from the ground level,” Mr Park said. “Tonight was about raising ideas and

strategies that could be adopted.” One particular worry identified was the high number of drivers speeding down Beresfield’s Anderson Drive, around the works on Maitland Road and on either side of the speed camera at Sandgate, which is the only link between the F3 Freeway and the North Coast. Mr Park believes that while policing the areas better would counteract the problem, the long term solution is an investment in regional infrastructure. “The closer to Sydney you live, the more transport options you have,” he said. “Regional communities do not have the same options; we have to rely on cars. “We should not be punished for that.” @melcomber

Registered Training Organisation (RTO) trains around 100 apprentices each year in traditional trades for the mining, manufacturing and rail industries. “The new centre and its modern facilities will enable HVTC to meet the changing nature of training and provide even higher quality training to our apprentices.” Mr Cameron said HVTC had now outgrown the current East Greta Junction site, which it has occupied for 26 years. Designed and constructed by Drayton Construction Pty Ltd, the HVTC Skills Centre is expected to be completed by November 2013 and be fully operational from the beginning of 2014. Stage two involves relocating the head office at Telarah to land adjacent to the new centre.

he ghoulish ghosts and spritely spirits that may lurk within the walls of Grossman and Brough Houses in Maitland will be under the spotlight this weekend during the third annual Haunted Houses tour. Last year, the tour proved so popular a second date had to be added and a waiting list established. This year, thanks to a State Government Heritage Grant, the two homes have been brought closer together. The National Trust has undertaken a project of works that has included restoring the painted exterior to match the exterior

when the original inhabitants, the Owen and Beckett families, first moved in. Caretaker, Alan Todd, who will guide groups through the houses on Saturday night, wondered whether the spirits would approve of the changes. “We have had a woman come through on a previous tour feel a presence at the top of the staircase in Grossman House.” Participants will tour the 1870 houses by candlelight, gaslight and oil lamp hearing stories of paranormal encounters before enjoying supper following the tour. The Grossman and Brough Houses Haunted Houses Tour will commence at 7pm on Saturday, July 6. Tickets are $25. Contact Alan Todd on 49 337 758. @amelia_parrott

W

ith the cold setting in, The Olive Tree Markets ‘Winter Market’ returns this Saturday, July 6 with a range of first time stallholders offering winter-focused artisan wares to help you through the cold months. Market organiser Justine Gaudry is confident shoppers will find something new and exciting. “Jody Godfrey of Tickle & Hide will showcase her beautifully intricate textile art including quilts, drawstring play mats and women and children’s clothing,” Ms Gaudry said. “Then there’s bymarienicole, which takes recycled goods and turns them into statement pieces created from ecofriendly products and materials and using

traditional artisan techniques to create her work. “Nuria Mestres of Chompa produces stylish adult and children’s beanies, scarves, neck cowls as well as unique crocheted home-wares in the form of vases, wall hangings, functional textile art floor mats and more.” Call in for brunch or lunch and sample delicious winter fare from around the world or take home a wide variety of locally made gourmet food products. If you can’t make it on Saturday, head down to The Emporium in Hunter Street Mall, where The Olive Tree Market has opened a retail space. It’s open Thursday 10am-6pm, Friday 10am-5pm and Saturday 10am-4pm.

The sun-smart message is often neglected during the winter. Winter may prove to be the best time for a full skin check. As most people are covered up during the winter months, this minimises sun exposure to skin lesions and moles. This can allow for better dermoscopy viewing (a distinct magnifying light, which allows a doctor to closely examine spots on the skin). Remember to protect your skin this winter by applying 50+ sunscreen to exposed areas of skin. If you notice a spot on the skin that looks different from the others or is changing, bleeding or itchy, it should be examined by a doctor.

STAYING HEALTHY

FASHION FIXATION

Everything in moderation

f Clinical Nutritionist Fiona Kane was given a dollar for every time she heard the line, “Everything in moderation”, she says she would be a very wealthy woman. Kane says in her line of work, she hears this phrase every day, especially at functions involving food (and often whilst people are tucking into a piece of cake!). Most people are guilty of using this line from time to time, and it’s used to justify our food choices. For example, that muffin, bag of lollies, chocolate bar, donut or sugary drink you like to have every day is moderation, surely? Think again. “The word ‘everything’ casts a very wide net,” Kane says. “I don’t agree that everything is okay. For example, even moderate sugar consumption can lead to type II diabetes, Alzheimer’s and even cancer. The dictionary definition of moderation is ‘the avoidance of excess or extremes’. Who defines what is excessive or extreme?” Kane says a recent study of 28,500 people over 15 years published in Diabetologia found that all it takes is one can of sugar-sweetened soft drink per day to increase people’s risk of type II diabetes by 22 per cent. Many people would not find one can of soft drink a day excessive. While on the subject of soft drinks, it’s a huge furphy that ‘diet’ soft drinks are any better. In fact, they can be worse – the chemicals in diet drinks can have many sideeffects, one of which is cravings for more sugar! I suppose it is up to the individual when it comes to eating in moderation. Do you want health in moderation? Or do you want disease in moderation?

We know the figure above represents the average distribution of this publication. No more, no less. It’s the absolute truth. How do we know? Well, we have our publication audited by the CAB. Why? Because we are committed to protecting our advertisers. The CAB audits our newspapers, magazines, websites and exhibitions to make sure advertisers are getting all of what they are paying so much for. There is a lot of money at stake, but a surprisingly large number of advertisers blindly trust the numbers they are given by unaudited media. We just don’t understand why. Why would an advertiser risk paying too much for too little? Ask yourself this, what kind of media outlet wouldn’t want to be audited? As an advertiser, put your mind at rest, insist that you only use media that’s been CAB audited. Like this one. *Average Net Distribution March 2013

Low down on jeans

I

wear jeans all year round but in winter, they are my best friend. They go with anything, can be worn in (almost) any occasion and are easy to wear. If you haven’t embraced jeans, then it is about time you start. Cuts: There are so many different styles of jeans out there to choose from; the hard part is choosing the right pair for you. The latest trend in jeans is the ‘boyfriend’ style, which features a low crotch and straight legs, designed to be baggy and comfortable. You can get flares, which fan out at the legs; straight leg jeans, which when worn look tight around the thighs and loose at the base; and skinny leg or tube jeans, which are tight all the way down. Choose from high-waisted (bellybutton height), mid-length (just under the belly button), and low-rise (right on the hips) styles. Fabrics: The most common fabric to find jeans in is denim. This thick, extremely durable fabric is available in many different colours and washes. Stretch denim is great because it is much more comfortable than the heavy duty type and tends to hug your figure much better; however, it can be hard to hide unwanted lumps and bumps in this style. You can get jean-style pants in other fabrics and also prints. But I would always recommend denim first – it is longer lasting. Casual Wear: I wear my jeans most often in casual situations because they are easy to dress down. I love to wear my cut-off skinny leg jeans with a t-shirt, sneakers and cardigan for a really casual look, but I think that boyfriend jeans are the best option for the casual look.

Bird Flu flies again

nfluenza is not just a bad cold. Certainly the symptoms are somewhat similar, but the flu is potentially a lifethreatening disease. Antibiotics are not effective against viral infections like the flu or the common cold; and there is ongoing debate about the effectiveness of the anti-viral drugs such as Tamiflu. However, in February, Professor Jonathan Van-Tam from the University of Nottingham published preliminary results of a study he and his colleagues had undertaken on people who had been hospitalised with the 2009 “swine flu”. The study showed people who took Tamiflu within two days of falling ill were only half as likely to die compared with those who took it late or not at all. They’re encouraging results; but we can’t rely on a quick fix solution to infection with the flu virus – whether that infection comes from pigs, birds or human beings. Today, prevention remains our major weapon against influenza. You can help protect yourself by making sure your lifestyle is healthy with regular exercise, you enjoy and a daily diet that includes the widest possible variety of foods. And, of course, annual vaccination against the flu is essential for all people in high-risk categories. People with chronic heart, kidney or lung disease, diabetes or other longterm illnesses are particularly vulnerable to influenza. You can get more advice about the flu from pharmacies around Australia providing the Pharmaceutical Society’s Self Care health information. For the nearest location, phone 1300 369 772 or visit the website www.psa.org.au.

YOUTH TALK by Declan Clausen

EDUCATION MATTERS by David Roy

Youth are simply switching off

The language of report cards

t is often said that politics is a hard game, and those who play it need to be tough. The events of the past week, and more broadly during this last term of Parliament, solidify this statement as being gospel. But what are the effects of our ‘lively democracy’? Quite apart from the unproductive (and somewhat unnecessary) nature of personality-over-policy based conflicts amongst our leaders, it also regrettably appears that such behaviour is driving young people away in droves. Last week the Lowy Institute released results of its comprehensive annual polling. Amongst the data it recorded a highly concerning statistic. Of the 1,500 surveyed young people aged 18-26 years, more than half (56 per cent) stated that their preference was for a non-democratic system of government. The reasons for such a statistic are complex. Despite the twenty-four hour news cycle constantly reminded of the challenges of oppressive governance with Syria and the Arab Spring featuring nightly, a lack of understanding of government and the fights of the past for democracy appear to prevail. The fact remains that young Australians are simply switching off. As we reflect on this data and on events of the last few weeks, it is worth thinking of Churchill: “Democracy is the worst system of government, except for everything else.” Into the coming months and years, political leaders from all persuasions will have their work cut out to re-inspire and re-engage the youth of this nation. The stakes are high. Ultimately the future depends on it.

s report cards for Semester 2 appear, there is jargon that can be confusing. Often on reading a report card you can be left wondering whether a child is doing well or not. This is because report cards use the language of the assessment and curriculum. So what do these words mean? The two main words used most commonly are ‘Achievement’ and ‘Application’. Achievement refers to the actual result, the level of ability in the class. This can be thought of as the product. Application is the effort or process in the class. Both are equally important. In NSW, it is recognised that application is key to achievement. Within these two areas, there are levels. Ideally, we all want every child to be ‘Outstanding’. This means that they are at the highest level. Ranking, while useful, has limited meaning. What is more important than this, though, is the comments in each section. These give detail on areas of strength and areas to improve. All students can be stretched further, no matter how able. Children are at school for 6 hours a day, but it is the support we offer at home than can also make a real difference. The report card allows parents to hear what teachers recommend to help children achieve even more. Remember, learning is a group effort. It is not only just a school’s responsibility – everyone needs to help. Use the report card as a tool to support your children to be the best they can be.

When sleep becomes a foreign concept

R

ecently I woke bleary-eyed, snippy and begging for more sleep, a feeling most parents know well. I thought this feeling would pass after both my children are far from newborns, but it doesn’t and according to my mum, this is how it will be forever. I must admit, prior to having children I loved my sleep. As I approached parenthood, the first time my sleep started to be affected was about 3 months before my son was born. At the time, you think this is bad, but then your newborn arrives and you are awake far more than you ever expected. Fast forward to now and I have a 5-year-old and a 2-yearold and yet I am still sleep deprived! Obviously it is not as acute as it was when they were newborns, however I have never resumed my pre-children sleep routine. So here I am, spacing out, having my first coffee of the day and trying to shake the urge to take a nap. The reason for my immense tiredness is that my daughter has a bad cold at the moment and is struggling to sleep or breath through the night with her blocked nose. Despite the humidifier, the elevated pillow and the Vicks, she is so overtired. So, it’s mum to the rescue. I am in and out of her room trying to calm her and help her sleep by rubbing her back and stroking her hair and that works until you stop. During these sleepless nights, when she rolls over in a daze and gives you a kiss or wraps her little hand around yours, everything else melts away and at that precise moment you don’t care if you never sleep again. Then, it’s morning, and you just have to get on with it.

aries

March 21 to April 20

Property and family issues will be playing a huge part in your life. You may be in the throes of planning renovations, a move or the purchase of an investment property. Opening up your home to others will be rather enjoyable; perhaps you’re doing lots of entertaining or having people stay over. The New Moon on the 8th indicates that a job which has been on the drawing board for some time will all of a sudden take off! Your social life could bring surprises during the next few weeks.

TAURUS

april 21 to may 21

You have a rather hectic schedule this month which will involve several short distance trips, returning heaps of emails and dealing with a non-stop ringing phone. The New Moon on the 8th is an excellent time to challenge yourself mentally and time spent in stimulating company will make you come alive. This is the ideal time to address an issue with a loved one, however thoughtful words will require a lot of insight. Your focus should be on greater financial security.

Businesses who register for the Save Watts program will gain a greater understanding of their business’ electricity consumption and can make simple changes which can help reduce their electricity consumption, often immediately by 10-20 per cent, sometimes more. Saving energy is a three step process. Firstly, change the behaviour of employees and customers. Management should lead the way by setting an example. A few simple things like turning off lights, air conditioners and appliances when not in use will have a positive impact. The second step is low cost changes. For example, installing energy efficiency light globes and fluros, installing push button ‘switches’ in bathrooms, or installing solar

Saving watts tinting windows which are exposed to long periods of sunlight will also have a positive impact for little outlay. The third step is investment cost changes. For example, replacing old energy guzzling pieces of equipment, like an old ‘central’ airconditioning unit with small split systems. It might cost $20,000 to install 8 split systems into offices, but if the consumption can be reduced significantly by say, $400 per month, then the investment will be repaid in 4 years. It’s important to think long term and act now. Your best starting point is to ring the Save Watts Hotline on 40328277 or send an email to savewatts@mybgc.org. au. The Business Growth Centre’s Energy Efficiency Officer, Maryanne Cantwell, will provide you with the information you need to get started. Understanding the financial impact of your energy consumption will not only give you a chance to save money, it will improve your businesses bottom line. You can also get help with preparing the business case for upgrades that can be funded through electricity savings.

Brett Gleeson is the Manager of the Business Growth Centre . He has 30 years experience in the NFP and business sectors and holds a degree in Business.

here are important changes to superannuation that businesses need to know about that came into effect on Monday, July 1. The most immediate changes are an increase to the super guarantee rate (SGR) of 0.25 per cent to 9.25 per cent. The other is the removal of the upper age limit for super guarantee payments. The SGR is the minimum amount of super payment you must make on behalf of your employees. It is progressively rising to 12 per cent by July 1 2019. This means that you need to adjust your payroll and accounting systems to factor in the new rate. The removal of the age limit means that you need to start paying super for eligible employees who are aged 70 and above. Another change is that super funds have started offering Mysuper products from July 1. This is a new, simple and cost effective super product that will replace existing default products. (A default super fund is the one you

nominate for employees who do not select a preferred fund.) From January 1, 2014 if your employee does not choose a fund, you have to make super contributions to a fund that offers a MySuper product. You should also start investigating your options to meet a new data and e-commerce standard. The new standard will allow you to send super contributions and data on behalf of your employees to all funds in one standard electronic format, instead of sending information to separate funds in multiple formats. The plan is to reduce processing times and costs. You may need to update software or systems. The new standard will be compulsory for employers with more than 20 employees from January 1, 2014 and for employers with less than 19 employees from July 1, 2015. If you have 19 or fewer employees, the Australian Tax Office suggests you use the Small Business Superannuation Clearing House to help you meet your super guarantee obligations.

ust in time for the school holidays, ‘ParaNorman’ involves all those spooky things kids love – ghosts, zombies and witches, while seeing a bullied kid triumph over those who try to put him down. The Academy Award-nominated film centres around Norman, a young boy who is able to talk to ghosts and finds himself having to use his supernatural powers to save his town from a centuries-old curse. ‘ParaNorman’ is produced by LAIKA, the same studio who made ‘Coraline’ and revolutionised the use of 3D printers in stop-motion animation. As result, the animation of the film is stunning – the range of facial emotions conveyed by the characters takes realistic animation to a whole new level.= And yes, those are the voices of John Goodman and Elaine Stritch you’re hearing in there.

ou can always rely on the animation masters at Pixar to deliver a holiday flick that’s sure to please the kids. Their latest school holiday boredom buster is the much awaited follow up to 2001’s ‘Monster’s Inc’, ‘Monsters University’. ‘Monsters University’ follows Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sully (John Goodman) before they were the top scare team at Monsters Inc, when they were not-so-friendly freshmen at MU. Steve Buscemi is back on board as Randal, Mike’s overzealous dorm mate and Helen Mirren joins the cast as the hardnosed head of the Scare School, Dean Hardscrabble. There’s plenty of action and fun new monster friends and, of course, being a Pixar film, there’s plenty of jokes to keep the adults laughing along, too.

f you’re looking for something to occupy the kids on Friday night, you can’t go wrong with witches, wizards and some high-speed broomstick riding.

A favourite with the big (and some even bigger) kids, the second film in the Harry Potter series sees Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) try to close a mysterious wing of the school, known as the Chamber of Secrets, and stop the monster that has been released from within it from harming the students. There some dark and mildly scary scenes, so it is not recommend for littlies, but for what it lacks in catering to small kids, it more than makes up for in adult appeal – look out for Uncle Vernon’s Japanese Golfer joke. This is essential viewing for fans of quality cinema.

here aren’t too many shows you can go to that will have you on all-fours like a dog or performing ‘Gangnam Style’ like a pro on stage in front of a live audience, but that’s exactly the kind of shenanigans you can expect at a Steven Spellmaster show. Over the past 15 years, stage hypnotist Spellmaster has performed more than 3,000 shows and hypnotised tens of thousands of people, including the likes of Hamish Blake and rugby league legend Mario Fenech on ‘The Footy Show.’ What started as a fascination for Spellmaster has grown into a career as one of Australia’s most heavily booked hypnotist acts. “I had always had a fascination with the mind,” Spellmaster told TE. “I had read every book on hypnosis and has been hypnotised myself as a teenager and got great results from it clinically, so I was a massive believer in hypnosis. “From there I did a Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy. “I had the entertainment ability so straight away I had a show and even from a young age, I knew it was something I’d end up doing for life.” This month he is giving “willing volunteers” the rare chance to experience hypnosis for themselves with what he promises will be a side-splittingly hilarious show at Wallsend Diggers.

Ahead of the show, Spellmaster caught up with TE to clear up a few common misconceptions about hypnosis. “People think when you are under hypnosis you go to a different place and you’ve got no recollection of what happens, that’s not true, that’s a myth. “Under hypnosis you’ve got a heightened sense of awareness. “You know exactly what you are doing. “You’re actually more alert in a hypnotic state than you are in a normal state. “You’ve got a crystal clear mind.

“In that state I tap directly into your subconscious mind, which is like a computer, what it receives it responds to and even though everything I’m getting you to do is terribly outrageous, it just feels right, it just feels normal. “Even though they know exactly what they are doing, they lose their inhibitions, they don’t care about the audience and they just feel compelled to entertain.” And entertain they do. When asked about the most outrageous on-stage incident,

Spellmaster says there are almost too many to count. “There’s been so many,” he laughs. “I suppose, when I get guys to give birth on stage. I get them to imagine that they’re having a baby. “All of a sudden these guys are screaming out in pain, blaming their partner for the pain they’re in, grabbing the gas, huffing and panting, legs pulled back around their ears. “Then I get two midwives for three guys, so one misses out, so he’s abusing them asking why the hospital didn’t organise a midwife for him. “Two guys are getting looked after. One guy is looking after himself and he doesn’t know what to do. “It’s just hilarious!” But as wild as the on-stage antics can be, Spellmaster promises that no-one will go home still in labour or thinking they’re a chicken. “A hypnotist can’t make you do anything against your will, but say for instance you’re a fairly outrageous in an intoxicated state, the hypnotist can bring that out of you in a hypnotic state. “What you’re willing to do intoxicated, under hypnosis you’re willing to do that as well. “If someone goes home a chicken from one of my shows, they were more than likely already a chicken. “They already had that problem,” he laughs. Catch Steven Spellmaster when he performs at Wallsend Diggers on Friday, July 12.

hen Cat Canteri from Melbourne alt.country outfit The Stillsons spoke to TE back in May, she told us that the rockier vibe that permeated the lead single from their third album, ‘Never Go Your Way’, was what you could expect from the entire album. She’s yet to be proved a liar, with the second release, ‘Feel So Young’, not only echoing the good vibes produced by ‘Break and Keel’, but upping the ante. “Playing in lots of pubs makes your music a little more raucous,” Canteri joked. “I think that’s just the nature of pub audiences – it tends to make the beats a little heavier.” Just as on ‘Break and Keel’, Canteri sings the lead vocals and plays the drums in addition to writing the song in a move that she described as unusual for the band. “In the past we [herself and guitarist Justin Bernasconi] have both sung, but he has sung more than I have, and previously we’ve acted more around harmonies.” Fans of the group’s softer folksy roots needn’t fear though, as Canteri affirms that they have not turned ‘Feel So Young’ into commercial radio material, a move she feels has contributed to their growing UK success. Their previous album, ‘Earnest’, garnered a significant amount of airplay on the BBC’s various incarnations across the UK, with ‘Break and Keel’ following suit. “In the UK, like in Australia, they have some independence to be able to play what they want without worrying about what kind of music will make them money. “We do have some pop sensibilities, but we’re definitely not an FM band.” Catch The Stillsons as they launch ‘Feel So Young’ at The Royal Exchange on Saturday, July 6.

hey may have graduated from one of the more prominent bands in the Newcastle music scene, but Jess Moxey and Stef Threadgate are continuing to define their own path as guitar-rock two-piece Hey Lady! Since releasing their debut self-titled EP almost a year ago, Moxey and Threadgate have been delivering chemistry-filled sets around the traps and are gearing for another round of hometown shows this month. “We’re really happy with how it was received,” says Moxey of the band’s EP. “It was early days for us when we recorded that EP. “We had five songs to choose from and we recorded four of them but we’re looking forward to the next round of

Ph: 4960 1397 284 Maitland Rd

recording because we’ve got a few more songs in the kit to choose from. We’re writing all the time so we’re looking forward to that.” Moxey says she and best-mate Threadgate have been writing new material and hope to record by year’s end. “Our last couple of gigs we played some brand new songs. “They’re a little bit of a rocky sort of direction...hints of blues...but certainly guitar driven. “You can’t really pick what you write, we just sort of go for it.” Catch Hey Lady! showing off their new material when they support Going Swimming and Bigger Cages at the Terrace Bar this Thursday, July 4 or supporting Sea Legs at the Small Ballroom on Friday, July 12.

ewcastle muso Zane Penn takes a leaf from the tree in the old school yard. Artists who have inspired him include Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, David Bowie, U2 and a long list of great blues artists from the 1950’s. They say motion is driven by emotion and Penn’s creative songwriting is no different. All his compositions are from the heart and delivered the same way. It’s fair to say that all fields of emotion come into play in his lyrics and melodies. Penn’s writings combine the raw, rootsy elements of early rhythm and blues and country music, which come together in a natural sound with strong rhythmic grooves. An accomplished singer and guitarist, he is kept constantly working in bands, mainly Rubber Bullet or acoustic solo. Catch Zane Penn at the Prince of Wales on Friday, July 5.

mapping a period in his life Pyke has described as “deeply personal”. Adding to the excitement is the release of the video for Josh’s ‘The Beginning And The End Of Everything’ lead single, ‘Leeward Side’. In a first for the industry, the clip was shot using 100 per cent recycled materials. You’ll also see Pyke looking dapper in a furry wolf suit. As an added bonus, fans will receive a free download of a previously unreleased track, ‘Confessions For You’, with every show ticket purchased. fter a sold out national ‘Fan’s First’ tour earlier this year, indie pop darling Josh Pyke is taking the swag of tunes from his new record, ‘The Beginning And The End Of Everything’, on road next month and is dropping in to Newcastle for one night only. The new album marks Pyke’s fourth in the studio and explores ideas of desire, death and legacy – all emotions which the singer songwriter says are the beginning and the end of all decisions he makes in his life. Recorded with John Castle (The Bamboos, Washington and The Drones), ‘The Beginning And The End Of Everything’ is his most personal to date,

ernard Fanning, Sarah Blasko and Bob Evans – it’s not just a who’s who of Australian music, it’s the newly announced lineup for this summer’s Day on the Green at Bimbadgen Winery. Fans will get a chance to hear Fanning, Blasko and Evans making sweet music together in the vines, along with main support act, iconic Aussie five-some, The Cruel Sea. Fanning, who is currently enjoying rave review for his latest solo album, ‘Departures’, as well as plenty of airplay, is just as keen as the fans. “I’m really looking forward to Day on the Green…I have been hearing about them for years and am glad to be playing my new songs in such a dignified setting,” he joked.

“And I’m looking forward to a couple of vinos with Bob Evans and Sarah Blasko.” The former Powderfinger frontman will bring his ‘Tea & Sympathy’ and ‘Departures’ albums to the stage, saying he is “delighted” to have Blasko, Evans and The Cruel Sea stand up beside him. The ARIA award-winning Blasko, who recently returned to our shores after a sojourn in Paris touring and promoting her latest album, ‘I Awake’, will perform new single, ‘All Of Me’, alongside a backlist which includes ‘All I Want’ and a haunting cover of Cold Chisel’s ‘Flame Trees’. Evans, the lovable alter-ego of Jebediah frontman Kevin Mitchell, with his irresistible progressive pop sound, will perform from his fourth and latest album, ‘Famous Stranger’. Day on the Green Bimbadgen Winery is on Saturday, November 2. Tickets go on sale at 9am this Friday, July 5, from www.adayonthegreen.com.au or www.ticketmaster.com.au.

alling all ‘beliebers’ – the wait is over as teen singing sensation Justin Bieber is finally set to grace our shores for his first ever Aussie tour. The best-selling recording artist will be visiting Australia at the end of this year, playing at Sydney’s Allphones Arena on Friday, November 29 and Saturday, November 30. After much anticipation from his Australian fans, Bieber will bring his ‘Believe’ tour to the country after wowing audiences at over 150 shows across the globe throughout North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. The tour has been a labour of love for Bieber, who rehearsed for 10 hours per day over a period of two months. The show has received rave reviews from both audiences and music critics alike who got caught up in the wave of Bieber fever. And to give you just a taste of the atmosphere, the Hollywood Reporter wrote that: “Hundreds of thousands of shrieking fans, many donning homemade T-shirts, singing, crying, dancing and yes, wearing out their vocal cords with screams, turned the downtown LA arena

into a virtual spaceship from another planet”. Bieber first shot to fame as a baby faced teen posting videos on YouTube and racking up over 10 million viewers by word of mouth. His cover videos of pop songs by Justin Timberlake, Ne-Yo and Stevie Wonder brought Bieber to the attention of manager Scoot Braun, who then signed him. He also earned a mentor in the form of musician Usher, and a record deal with exclusive label Island Def Jam Records. Since then, Bieber has become one of the world’s most recognisable pop icons, having won two Artist of the Year American Music Awards and sold 15 million albums worldwide. His concerts are a larger-than-life experience, with Bieber inspired by Michael Jackson’s phenomenal shows from the 80’s and 90’s and aiming to make you ‘believe in magic again’ with a spectacular show filled with lights, sound and pyrotechnics. Justin Bieber is bringing the ‘Believe’ tour to Allphones Arena in Sydney on Friday, November 29 and Saturday, November 30. For more information, call 132 849 or visitwww.ticketek.com.au.

real estate matters

$335,000 3

by Andrew McGrath

T

Throw some thick blankets over the couch to complete the pleasant surroundings. Also be sure to check the hour of the day when the winter sun shines brightly on your property, and arrange your open homes around this time to highlight your property’s best features. Open the curtains and let the natural light filter through your home. If your home lacks natural light, ensure that you turn on all the lights and lamps. Musty smells can also be an issue during the colder months. To combat this obstacle, use some nice aromas such as scented candles, or brew some fresh coffee to override the stuffy odours. It’s also a good idea to have baked or have something in the oven. While it sounds naff, anecdotal evidence suggests that cinnamon is one of the most univserally enticing fragrances. Winter provides some great ways to enhance the experience of your home for potential buyers – so why not give some of these ideas a go!

Andrew McGrath is Principal of Raine & Horne Blacksmiths

Attention – fiRst hoMe buYeRs & investoRs, Look At this!!!

Ways you can fast-track selling your home this winter raditionally, the real estate industry goes into hibernation over the winter period. It’s certainly not our busiest time of year. For vendors, this may mean there are fewer homes on the market for sale, which is the case right now. As a consequence, there are leaner pickings for motivated buyers, which can work in the favour of those vendors who have priced their homes according to market expectations. While less competition can potentially deliver more motivated buyers to your door, a friendly and inviting interior can help encourage them to fall in love with your home, and perhaps offer a little more to secure the property. For example, if your home has a fireplace, or central heating, ensure it is working during home inspections. Not only is a roaring fire a comforting sight for aspiring buyers, a warm home will create an inviting atmosphere and have potential buyers imagining wiling away the hours.

Newcastle country champions

t was a disappointing week for local footy with only Kurri Kurri playing Lakes united on Saturday proceeding. We are quickly getting a backlog and the plan of attack from here will be set this week. In that match, Kurri proved a little too strong for a gritty Seagulls outfit, keeping their season alive with a well deserved 24-10 victory. In Round 12 action starts on Saturday with the live streamed match of the round. Macquarie Scorpions will have their hands full when they travel to Maitland Sports Ground to take on the Pickers outfit who have not tasted defeat in their last six outings. Both sides should be relatively fresh and this should be an intense battle that will go a long way to showing where these two sides are headed for 2013. Tune in to Fordo and Butts’ call of all the action on www.newcastlerugbyleague. com.au from 2.30pm on Saturday afternoon. In the Sunday clashes, Lakes United will host a South Newcastle outfit who must win to keep 2013 aspirations within reach. This will be a good clash in the middle of the park with the backing up of Matt Shipway from his impressive performance for the Rebels out at Dubbo last Saturday. Port Stephens will be hoping for a game

of footy against Wests who will travel up looking to get their season right back on track. Craig “Barney”Miller has been critical of his side’s performances recently and will be looking to put that behind them here. At St John Oval on Sunday, Central Newcastle and Kurri Kurri will both be keen to keep their Finals hopes well and truly alive with a victory. Defeat in this game will make it very difficult for that side for the rest of the season. Congratulations to the Newcastle Rebels Under 18s side who became Country Champions for 2013 last Saturday at Dubbo with an emphatic 30-14 victory over the Southern Stingrays. Well done to all, especially the six players chosen on the Country Under 18’s to tour QLD and New Zealand this week – Cameron Burns from Lakes (scorer of three tries in the Final), Eli Levido, Ryley Thomas, Sam Apthorpe and Jordan Stratton from Cessnock , and Jarrod Smith from Maitland. Commiserations to the Senior side who were outplayed in the second half by a determined Illawarra outfit 38-22 in the Tier 1 senior Final. We can expect some serious representation when the Country side for the South Africa tour at season’s end is picked in a few weeks.

Impressive victories

efending Newcastle District Major Singles champion Brendon Baker (Valentine) advanced to the Third Round of the 2013 Championship with two impressive victories last Saturday. He defeated Chris Handley (Kotara) 31/12 in Round 1 and 2013 Newcastle District Under 25 Singles champion Matthew Dennis (HeatonBirmingham Gardens) 31/23 in Round 2. He was scheduled to play Richard Hadley (Stockton) in Round 3 on Sunday at Kotara, but play was postponed due to the wet weather. 2009 title holder Martin Ball (Redhead) qualified for the Third Round with a solid 31/17 win over Steven Wilson (Raymond Terrace). 2007 champion David Govan

(Valentine) had a good 31/24 First Round win over Paul Black (HeatonBirmingham Gardens) and then edged out Greg John (Windale/ Gateshead) 31/30 in Round 2. There is no play in the Major Singles Championship next weekend due to the Newcastle Representative Team travelling to West Dubbo Bowling Club to contest a four way Inter-Zone Series. Selectors made one late change to its side, due to Matthew Baus being required to attend an Australian Squad training camp. Jarrod Duncan (Hamilton) has been called in to play third for Richard Girvan (Nelson Bay), with Daniel Hill (Soldiers Point) lead and Scott Baus (Raymond Terrace) second.

Clear run ahead for Mudd

Champion rider romps home in the second round of State Series event Melissah Comber

H

unter mountain bike rider, Graeme Mudd, is sitting in fourth place in the RedAss Downhill State series after securing a win in Round 2. The 20-year-old competed against 28 other riders from NSW and the ACT at Wiseman’s Ferry in the Elite Male category late last month, in what was his first competitive race in almost five months. Mudd missed the first round of the series due to illness and said that he was very pleased with his performance. “I’m happy that I’ve obviously still got it after a bit of a break,” he said. “I’m feeling fit.” Mudd completed the race in just over 2 minutes, over a second clear of his closest rival. He shaved almost five seconds off his seeding time, clocked the day before. “I knew after the seeding run that I had more in me,” Mudd said. “I had a small mistake and wasn’t pedalling too hard so I turned it up for the race run.” Despite only being in his third year on the circuit, this isn’t Mudd’s first taste of success, having recorded two round wins in the same series last year, as well as the Downhill NSW State Championships. He is also a five-time junior champion in BMX and mountain bike racing. @melcomber
