Council favours local event day over a Show Day holiday in 2014 Amelia Parrott

ovocastrians will once again go without a Show Day holiday in 2014, with Newcastle City Councillors last week resolving to make an application to the state government for a full local event day on Friday, February 28, the opening day of the Newcastle Regional Show. Lord Mayor, Jeff McCloy, said councillors needed to consider the impact a public holiday would have on local small business. “Last year I wrote to a large number of employer associations and every one of them was against having a show day public holiday,” he said. “I understand that Australians love a public holiday but it is not good for small businesses that cannot afford to open because they can’t afford to pay their staff public holiday rates.” Cr Nuatali Nelmes argued for Council to request a full public holiday. She said if Council did not act this year, Newcastle would be at risk of losing its show for good. “If we don’t have a full show holiday this next year, we are at risk of losing our show and this has been reiterated by the Show Association,” she said. Council will push the state government for a full local event day for the Newcastle Show after deciding against a public holiday events scheduled for the Friday of this year’s show, an unfortunate circumstance that Cr Nelmes said the association was still paying for. Cr Andrea Rufo said declaring a full day public holiday would do nothing to insure against poor weather conditions. “Even with a full day public

holiday, if it rains I would be every surprised if families still went to the show.” A late amendment put forward by Cr Brad Luke and supported by fellow Liberal Councillor Lisa Tierney, cemented the full local event day as Council’s default position for future show days.
