on’t fool with our pool. That was the message handed down to Newcastle City Council by around 100 Stockton residents who gathered at Stockton Swimming Centre on Sunday to protest over Council’s cuts to the pool’s operating hours, high admission fees and the lack of professional lifeguards on local beaches on weekends. Some demonstrators refused
to leave the facility as the gates closed on Sunday afternoon as an act of defiance against Council’s decision to close the pool at 3pm on Sundays, while others brandished placards demanding reduced entry fees and realistic operating hours and called on Council to “improve, not remove,” community services. Stockton resident and protest organiser, Chelle Heath, Newcastle City Council was depriving the Stockton community of a safe place for children to learn to swim. “Water safety is a massive part of our lives and we believe Newcastle City Council has a responsibility to make sure that our children have a
place where they can learn to swim safely,” she said. “The pool might close at 3pm but then the beach is not always that safe – they’re not giving us any alternatives. “Really it’s a matter of social justice.” Labor councillors Jason Dunn and Stephanie Posniak attended the demonstration, as well as representatives from the Mayfield and Beresfield Swimming Centres. Beresfield Swimming Club president, Greg Skinner, said pool users needed to form a united front in the face of Council’s cuts to season length and operating hours across the area.

support gay marriage. In more general terms, I support not discriminating against people solely based on who they are in a relationship with. My going on record with these statements won’t make a scrap of difference to changing the law, but I’m really getting sick and tired of some of the arguments against gay marriage. Knights player Ryan Stig has copped plenty of criticism for comparing homosexuality to alcoholism amongst other comments. To be fair, he has received quite a lot of support too. I don’t agree with anything he wrote or said in subsequent interviews, but I did have a slight amount of grudging respect for him in that he followed through and stood behind his statements even though it must have felt like the whole world was against him. I must also make mention of a former work colleague of mine, Andrew Webster’s courageous story in the Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday. Andrew detailed his personal battle to come to terms with his homosexuality and that thoughts of suicide had crossed his mind on several occasions.

Police continue to probe suspicious Wallsend nursing home deaths Amelia Parrott
P
olice officers attached to Strike Force Correa are continuing to investigate the suspicious death of two elderly residents of Wallsendbased nursing home SummitCare. The investigation, which involves detectives from the Newcastle City Local Area Command and the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, was launched last week following the death of an 83-yearold woman and an 81-year-old man, who both presented to John Hunter Hospital last month with symptoms of hypoglycaemia, or low blood sugar. The 83-year-old woman presented to hospital on October 18 and died the following day, while the 81-year-old man presented on October 19 and passed away ten days later. A 91-year-old woman also presented to John Hunter Hospital on October 19 with the same symptoms as the deceased but has since been discharged. Doctors at the hospital alerted police after pathology results indicated all three residents had high levels of insulin. Police believe none of the affected residents were diabetic. Newcastle City Local Area Commander Superintendent John Gralton said investigators would leave no stone unturned. “We are working with management of the

aged care facility and the involved families as the investigation continues,” he said. “As with all sudden and unexplained deaths, police are compelled to investigate on behalf of the coroner. The presence of any criminal intent is still being determined.
“The evaluation of medical evidence will assist in this regard.” He was not able to comment further regarding the investigations. Police are urging those with concerns regarding the welfare of loved ones housed at
SummitCare Wallsend to contact the facility’s management team. Anyone who has suspicions that a criminal act may have been committed should contact their local police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

hat is the one thing that stresses you about living life in the Hunter?” I challenged my dinner party guests recently. “Traffic!” came the cry in unison. Really? As one whose only frustration en route to work is having to sit at traffic lights to wait for non-existent cars to file past at 4.30am, I was surprised but they were on fire. “The Swansea Bridge insisting on opening 4-5 times a day at the exact times I have to go back and forth with kids and work,” tabled thumped my Caves Beach buddy. “Roadworks at Singleton,” said the health worker who travels to see clients. “Having to pay for parking in the city,” fumed another. “Having to pay for parking ANYWHERE!” again - in unison they decried. Seems as though cars and the paths they must take for the daily commute was having a detrimental affect on my friends’ lives. In the ensuing hour I learned when to go, when not to go and how to duck and weave the main arterials to get there without losing your mind and a weekly wage in evaporating fuel lost to an idling ride. We then discussed, at length I might add, the infamous Broke Road Pot Hole which, if memory served, took at least half a dozen cars off the road earlier this year.
Apparently it has its own Facebook page. Either that or I should have stopped filling that particular friend’s wine glass a lot earlier. Horror story after horror story I listened to with the emphasis on LISTEN. See, working the weird hours I do, and this would go for most shift workers, I don’t face the Mad Max-ish kind of
commute my nine-to-fivers, or mostly these days, the 7.30 to 6ers are forced to. I felt horribly inadequate in such an important conversation but my one saving grace was being able to recount the story of an Adamstown friend and his mammoth journey to collect his daughter from a friend’s house one Sunday afternoon. He lives approximately 800m
east of the Adamstown railway crossing and was traveling just 1km west but with train comings and goings, gates up and gates down, the entire 3.6km round journey took him 34 long, frustrating minutes. “Ridiculous!” came the angry responses. “Phew!” Finally, I was a contributor and not just the lucky one who sails smoothly to work in the dark. If truth be told though and my guests had asked what I considered the most stressful thing about life in the Hunter, I would have said “school reunions”. See, if I didn’t live here I would have a very good excuse as to why I couldn’t make my high school reunion which is fast approaching in a little under two weeks. Don’t I want to catch up with all my old buddies, my best friends forever, my first awkward loves? Absolutely not!!! Why? Well the simple answer to that is; I knew about this reunion 12 months ago and I only just went on the diet yesterday! My one saviour - maybe I could drive there via Adamstown and miss the whole shebang completely!

ocal councils will soon have more power to deal with potentially dangerous dogs in the community, with the State Government last week announcing fresh changes to the Companion Animals Act. The changes, which include the creation of a new category of “menacing or potentially dangerous dog,” allow council rangers to be more proactive in dealing with aggressive animals that have not yet attacked or been classified as a dangerous dog. Under the amended Act, menacing dogs will need to be muzzled and under the control of an adult in public. The announcement comes just two weeks after the Post brought readers the story of Dudley resident, Sandra Bice, whose 12-year-old shitzu, Chewbacca, was attacked by a stray dog in the driveway of Mrs Bice’s Ocean Street home, leaving the family pet with more than 20 puncture wounds to its neck and torso, damage to its lungs and loss of sight

The Australian Trials Academy will also be featured in the inside Arena with trials riding demonstrations, and Kiddimoto balance bike rides for the littlest bikers amongst us. Plus, visitors will have a unique viewpoint with the Showtime FMX Team, Lukey Luke and the Hell Team all having cameras strapped to them, with footage from their displays streamed live to a massive Super Screen above the Trials Arena. in one eye. Charlestown MP, Andrew Cornwell, who worked as a veterinarian before being elected to parliament, chaired the Government’s Companion Animals Taskforce. He said it was up to owners to take responsibility for their pets, especially around children. “I believe NSW now has the best regulatory framework in Australia in relation to the management of dangerous dogs, however I cannot stress strongly enough that the most important message to the community is that of personal responsibility,” Dr Cornwell said in a statement. “Leaving a child unsupervised with a dog, no matter how reliable that dog may have been in the past, is like leaving a child unsupervised beside a main road or a swimming pool.” The changes also include harsher penalties for owners who fail to register their pets, as well as prison terms for irresponsible owners. Owners who do not register their pets will face a $275 fine and if the matter goes to court, they could receive fines of up to $6600.

he athletes aren’t the only people excited ahead of December’s Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games. The buzz is building in the Cardiff camp of the Waltz-Sing Matildas, a dance group for the intellectually disabled, who will be performing in the opening ceremony alongside Marcia Hines and Darren Percival. The games, which will run from December 1-7 in Newcastle, will see 2500 athletes from 32 countries compete in range of events from athletics to tenpin bowling. Ms Hines said she was very excited to be performing at the opening ceremony. “Being asked to perform at the Opening Ceremony of the Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games is a real honour for me as this event really makes a difference in the lives of people with an intellectual disability,” she said. “It’s also going to be great fun, not just because I’m sharing the stage with some of our country’s best performers, but the Special Olympics dancers are so full of joy and energy and love to dance.” The performance of the Waltz-Sing Matildas in the opening ceremony is apt, as credo for the both the group and games is inclusion, regardless of ability. “The Waltz-Sing Matildas is for people who would fit into the Special

Sydney station launches campaign to restore Lake Macquarie FM Amelia Parrott
A
local community radio station has been left $20,000 out of pocket and off the airwaves after recent bushfires destroyed its transmission equipment. Lake Macquarie FM, formerly Radio Yesteryear, lost its transmitter and aerial during last month’s bushfires south of Lake Macquarie, which destroyed more than 2800 hectares of bushland, as well as five structures in the township of Catherine Hill Bay. The equipment was stored at the Big Prawn roundhouse on the Pacific Highway. Lake Macquarie FM president, Keith Ritchie, said while the station rented the space from the owners of the roadhouse, the equipment was not insured because it was kept outside the building. “We are $6000 short and we’re not eligible for disaster relief even though we are a notfor-profit,” he said. “Even after we get the money to pay for the damage we still have to replenish our reserves.” While the organisation has been able to replace the equipment using reserved funds, Mr Ritchie said electricity connection fees and ongoing rental costs mean the station is now a year behind in its finances. “We had plans to expand the station to do external broadcasts from community events but they have had to be put on hold.” Sydney-based community radio station, 2ser, has got behind Lake Macquarie FM’s

A message amongst mess
Mayfield Anglican church takes a crafty approach to spreading the word Paul Monforte
T
he words ‘messy’ and ‘church’ aren’t often used in the same sentence but Reverend Chris Jackson from St Andrew’s Anglican Church at Mayfield is seeking to combine them in the interests of fun. Messy Church is held once a month and allows people to come together for crafts, games, music, Bible stories and a plenty
of food. It is a way of families being able to attend church in a relaxed atmosphere. It is for all ages and is based on creativity, hospitality and celebration. Rev’d Jackson said that while some may see Messy Church as “not real church”, he was keen to dispel this feeling. “Our traditional full services on Sunday mornings are very important and always will be. Messy Church is not just a craft club, we also tell the story of Jesus.” Messy Church will be held this Sunday at 4pm at St Andrew’s Anglican

Reverend Jackson is about to receive a huge personal honour with his ordination as a priest set to occur on November 24 at Christ Church Cathedral in Newcastle. “I was first approached by the Church at age 18 and told they thought I had the right qualities to become a priest,” Rev’d Jackson said. “I was studying social science and law
at university, but as the years went on I felt myself drawn back to the idea of becoming a priest.” When asked if his age (30) would be a problem for parishioners who were used to their priests being somewhat older and more experienced in the ways of the church, Rev’d Jackson said it would not be the case at St Andrew’s. “Most of the parishioners have seen me come up through the church and are quite comfortable with me.”

The brainchild of Dr Jerry Schwartz, owner of the Crowne Plaza Newcastle and Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley, the Crowne2Crowne Cycle Classic started in its inaugural year with 10 participants who cycled the scenic 59km route from Crowne Plaza Newcastle to the Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley. “The Crowne2Crowne Cycle Classic
has grown tremendously since 2009, establishing itself as an exciting, actionpacked event the whole cycling community can enjoy,” Dr Jerry Schwartz said. “I am delighted with the success of this year’s event and want to thank the community for their generous support for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Services. “I look forward to the development of the Crowne2Crowne Cycle Classic as a major community event on the Newcastle calendar and anticipate many more years of great cycling to come” Dr Schwartz added. Mr Tim Owen, Liberal State Member for Newcastle, officiated, while Richard Jones, General Manager of Westpac Rescue Helicopter Services, congratulated riders at the conclusion of the race. Cyclists were offered an important pre-fuel breakfast and a well-deserved barbeque lunch at the end.

The Last Empire: Seminar series to learn how to enjoy your life to the fullest
O
n Friday November 1, The Last Empire seminar series began at the Jesmond Neighbourhood Centre. This series was first presented in numerous venues throughout Sydney in May. Danny Milenkov, the presenter for this series says that “the seminar will not only help you to understand and make sense of the events that are taking place in our fast changing world, but more importantly, The Last Empire is a program in which you will discover real hope for the future.” Indeed, there seems to be a growing sense of uncertainty in our world. As a globalinterrelated village, we face unprecedented challenges in a growing number of areas that affect us all. Our world is changing, and rapidly. People are wondering what the future holds. Does the Bible predict our future? If so, what is it? By comparing history, current world events and the Bible, the pieces of the puzzle all come together to create a hope-filled picture of what the destiny of each person is. Along with unlocking stunning prophecies this series will provide a framework for how we can enjoy our lives to the fullest in the here and now. Thousands have been impacted by this series. This is sure to be a life-changing experience. You will discover how you and your family can face the uncertain times ahead, with absolute confidence and without fear. The Last Empire series continues until November 16, every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 7pm at the Jesmond Neighbourhood Centre, 44 Mordue Parade. For further information please call Esava on 4965 8236 or 0423 451 989 or www.facebook. com/thelastempirenewcastle

Don’t play renovation roulette
W
ith summer just around the corner many of you will be thinking about finishing off some of those jobs around the house or even starting a renovation. But it is important that you and your family are safe so make sure you know what you’re dealing with before starting. November is Asbestos Awareness Month so it’s a great time to find out more about what to be on the lookout for, particularly if your home was built or renovated before the mid 1980s, because it is very likely that your home will have some building materials that contain asbestos. It is dangerous when people renovate and start cutting, sanding, drilling, grinding or pulling up materials that contain asbestos as asbestos fibres may be released. Health risks increase
with the more fibres you are exposed to. It’s often found in fibro sheeting or flooring and it was also used for roofing, eaves and shingles, which generally don’t pose a significant risk unless the sheets become badly weathered or are damaged. It is important to get advice about how to identify, remove and handle asbestos and hazardous substances properly. Special care is needed even for small renovation jobs that don’t require a development application. Council recommends that you treat all fibro sheets as if they contain asbestos unless tested and always use a licensed contractor to remove materials containing asbestos. If you want to find out more about asbestos visit www.newcastle.nsw.gov. au and search for asbestos or visit www. asbestosawareness.com.au

Nominate our community heroes
A
the community to ask themselves whether their best friend, neighbour, student or work colleague deserves recognition. Nominations forms and details are available at www.lakemac.com.au or by calling 4921 0333. Nominations close on Monday 2 December. Firefighters, police, service providers and hundreds of volunteers were involved in protecting and supporting our community during the bushfires and throughout the recovery process, and their efforts have been admirable. To show our appreciation to all of the emergency services personnel and volunteers who left their homes, families and day-to-day lives to help and support those in their community, Council is hosting a thank you event on Sunday 17 November. I look forward to this opportunity to commend the tireless and courageous efforts of the many people who worked to protect the community during this time of crisis.

esidents in Toronto, Rathmines, Wangi Wangi and Arcadia Vale are benefitting from a new bus service to Morisset. Hunter Valley Buses route 275 began on October 1 with three buses a day Monday to Friday. The services depart Toronto at 5.37am, 1.06pm and 6.05pm arriving at Morisset at 6.16am, 1.58pm, and 6.56pm. Buses depart Morisset at 6.35am, 2.12pm and 7.13pm arriving at Toronto at 7.42am, 3.10pm and 8.09pm. The community had been lobbying for a south-bound route to meet-up with the train service at Morisset. Previously, residents had travelled north into Toronto then wait and change buses for the trip to Fassifern. The service has benefitted residents from retirement villages in the area and well as commuters travelling by train. The bus timetable has been strategically aligned to meet rail services at Morisset. For more information on the exact routes and pickup points, or to pick up the bus timetable, contact Hunter Valley Buses on 49591233 or visit transportnsw. info or call 131500.

strong community spirit and willingness to assist one another increases our capacity to recover from difficult times. Recognising and rewarding the efforts of those who have given selflessly to our community is therefore extremely important. Through local acts of appreciation we nurture a caring community and help to build a stronger Lake Macquarie. Each year, as part of our local Australia Day celebrations, we recognise those who have made outstanding contributions to our City. The Lake Macquarie Australia Day Awards are an opportunity to hear stories of efforts made by individuals and groups for the benefit of others. These stories are often told by people whose lives have been transformed by simple acts of kindness, courage and commitment. Nominations for the 2014 Awards are now open, and I encourage everyone in

hether it’s a traditional margherita with fresh basil and mozzarella or a custom gourmet creation topped with olives, anchovies and all the trimmings – nothing says Italy quite like a pizza. And what is a pizza without an authentic Italian dessert to back it up? Novocastrians are lucky enough to be the first in the country to try Domino’s Pizza’s new range of Italian desserts. Imported direct from Italia, the range features Italian culinary classics like, silky smooth, crème caramel, rich tiramisu and profiteroles, smothered with sweet chocolate. Our pick is the to-die-for crème caramel
– it’s as good as you will find in any Italian restaurant, simply bellissimo. The Italian desserts range adds to Domino’s Pizza’s existing range of delicious desserts including, salted caramel chocolate mousse, Belgian chocolate lava cake, battered bananas, choc fudge brownies and mini Dutch pancakes. The new Italian desserts are $3.95 each and can be purchased in a premium dessert box for just $9.95. The range is available for pick up or delivery for a limited time only from all 21 Domino’s Pizza Stores across Newcastle. The Post sampled the new Domino’s Italian desserts range with compliments from Domino’s Pizza.

Buying local

any people forget about the benefits of buying local. With so many businesses struggling at present, an increase of 10 or 20% in turnover can make a big different to their survival. Small local businesses represent 80% of the economy and are critical to maintaining employment as well as providing services and products. We all know that a healthy employment rate makes a healthy economy so we need small local businesses to prosper. The big guys have a far better chance of survival, as they have more to trim before they cut. You can’t ‘cut fat off a bone’, so the small businesses have far less options. It must be very disheartening when some small business operators take home the equivalent of $10 per hour after a long week in the business. So we can all do our bit, individuals and businesses. By buying local we are support

our local businesses which are operated in the main by local people. The other way of thinking about this is…who will employ your child or grandchild when they leave school? For most it will be a local small business and for some it will be a large business. When your partner or sibling or mate loses their job…will there be any local small businesses to offer them another opportunity, particularly if they are over 50? With Christmas approaching, a bit too quickly for my liking, think about which local business can help you out with the presents you need to buy. We all benefit when we buy local, our local businesses survive and grow, there is sufficient local employment opportunities and it’s a great place to live and work. Do yourself a favour, support your local businesses.

s your business switched on to the fact that an increasing number of your customers are using smartphones and tablets? A staggering 96 per cent of Australians are now online according to the latest annual E-business Report by the people at Sensis. The report shows that the proportion accessing the internet via a tablet has increased to 50 per cent (up from 34 per cent in 2012) and 68 per cent via a smartphone (up from 58 per cent in 2012). Even if you are not a big user of smartphones and tablets, you need to find out if your customers want to use this technology to do business with you. Ask them. It may be a way of attracting a new segment of the market to your business and differentiating yourself from competitors. The Report found that while the number of small and medium businesses that have optimised their websites for mobile devices has almost doubled in the past year it is still only 17 per cent

that have done so. While 58 per cent of Australian consumers have downloaded a mobile app in the past year, just five per cent of SMEs introduced an app in the last year. However, 13 per cent of SMEs intend to develop one in the next 12 months. There are some useful consumer insights in the Report. Tablets are more likely to be used to look for information on products and services as well as suppliers of goods and services. Smartphones are more likely to be used to look for information such as maps and weather updates and use social networking sites. Tablets are also preferred for order products and services compared to smartphones. Consumers in higher income brackets are more likely to use their portable devices to research and purchase. more village development in inner and middle rings of capital cities. “About 180,000 older Australians already live in a retirement village around the same number who live in residential aged care - and industry surveys show that the vast majority of village residents are very happy with their choice to downsize,” Ms Wood says. “Retirement villages are a key part of

here will be a major surge in demand for retirement villages and home care services by older Australians, but new approaches are needed from providers and governments to meet it, according to new research by a leading property industry figure. Speaking recently at the Property Council’s Retirement Living Summit in Melbourne, Brian Haratsis, the Executive Chairman of MacroPlan Dimasi, says changes to the Age Pension Assets Test will encourage sector growth and allow older Australians to live comfortably. “In Australia the retirement village industry has come to a crossroad,” Mr Haratsis says. “There will be an almost 100 per cent increase in people aged 65 and over by 2030. “Retirement villages are important and will grow, because of the home-based care services villages can offer.” “However, for individuals and couples with high household wealth, there is often a disincentive to move to a retirement village, because the aged pension is adversely impacted by

Camp Breakaway Leases
Message from the General Manager Over the past few weeks, our neighbours and local community have been busy cleaning up after the recent bushfires. Our thoughts are with local residents who have been affected by these devastating events. The bushfires have shown us how important managing bushland is and how quickly fires can spread when weather conditions deteriorate. Delta’s efforts to minimise bushfire risks are outlined in the article below. We would like to congratulate and thank our local NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS), emergency services, and community volunteers for their outstanding work in protecting our community. As we approach the holiday season I encourage you to stay safe and wish you well for Christmas and the New Year.
COMMUNITY
Delta Electricity recently signed a new long-term lease with Camp Breakaway, securing the Camp’s access to 11.5 hectares of bushland surrounding its main campsite at San Remo until 2052. The long-term lease for the Camp’s main facilities has been similarly extended by Delta until 2052. Camp Breakaway hosts respite camps that provide activities for people with disabilities, as well as give their families and carers a break. Camp Breakaway General Manager, Dawn Caplin said she was delighted with the lease signing (pictured with Delta Chief Executive, Greg Everett and Minister for the Central Coast, Chris Hartcher). “Camp Breakaway would not exist without the amazing support of Delta over the years in providing the land for this fantastic respite service,” Ms Caplin said.
We earned a 5-star safety rating from the Delta’s Christian Godyn in PPE. National Safety Council of Australia, scoring 12 against the target of <50. At 14 August 2013, our Central Coast operations achieved more than one year free from lost time injuries (LTIs). Since it opened in 2009, Colongra has been completely free from LTIs, while Munmorah has been free from LTIs for 4.6 years. Management safety inspections continue to drive a positive safety culture across Delta. At 31 July 2013, 288 inspections or safety walk-downs had been completed this year, reflecting a high level of commitment to occupational health and safety across our organisation.
The recent bushfires on the Central Coast and Lake Macquarie have highlighted the need for Delta and the local community to remain vigilant in maintaining effective strategies for managing bushland areas.

Joshua Porter Reserve
COMMUNITY
Terrific new barbecue facilities were officially opened at Joshua Porter Reserve in September. The barbecue facilities were provided by the Chain Valley Bay Progress Association (CVBPA) which received grants from Delta Electricity and Wyong Shire Council. Delta’s $8,250 grant was used to erect a substantial pavilion that shades the barbecue area, install power and water at the site and build a concrete path connecting the pavilion and the accessible toilet. The new facilities provide local families and community groups with a great spot to get together and relax. The reserve is named in honour of the late Joshua Porter, Special Air Service Regiment Trooper.
Anna Evans
Currently in her fourth year of a combined Chemical Engineering and Physics degree, Anna works part-time with Delta as an undergraduate Chemical Engineer within the Plant Performance Team. She originally joined Delta as a summer intern and was then offered a four-year UNISS scholarship. Anna said her placements with Delta have provided invaluable opportunities to gain industry experience, as well as much needed financial support. Congratulations Anna!

Relive The Day: Capture the event for a lifetime of memories
Y
ou spend a long time planning your wedding - how do you plan to remember it? The vast majority of your wedding budget is spent on the day itself - sure it’s going to be one perfect day but when it’s over… it’s over. There are however two expenses that don’t fit that criteria, they are for the future not the present, they don’t add anything to the day itself and they really aren’t appreciated till time has past, they can be considered more an investment that an expense and their value will grow as the years pass. Having photographic and video coverage of your wedding is the only way of preserving the memories you have spent so much time and effort preparing for and each is important in it’s own way. With the advent of digital cameras that shoot high definition photographs and video it’s the professionalism and experience of the person behind the camera that makes the difference. While the same camera can be theoretically used for either, they are vastly different fields of expertise and being good at one doesn’t confer any talent at the other. While there are some providers out there trying to do both, it’s a stretch - like asking your caterer to make your wedding cake, while he might be capable, how good will the end result be? The essence of photography is capturing a moment in time, each image stands on it’s own and the photographer may hope that you see it and say “wow, that’s beautiful” The moving image however is nothing without the frame that came before it and the frame that follows it, Movement is the
essence of the moving image and where a wedding is concerned the fim maker might hope to hear you say “wow, I remember that.” The days of large camcorders, on camera lights and cheesy transitions are long gone and the new tools enable video producers to create a cinematic vision of your day that you will rarely tire of watching. Today’s video producers need to be equally competent in sound to capture the important moments of your day and hearing your vows as well as watching the emotion in your partners face is something not to be missed. Everyone will tell you “the day is a blur” it happens so fast you really do need to consider carefully investing in preserving those memories with both photography and video, in five years time, it’s all you’ll have.

plastic to precious, refined to rustic, retro and vintage, whereas others tend to specialise. Recently, some long-term and well travelled customers from North-West Queensland who are experienced antique collectors, approached staff to praise the centre, declaring it to be “the best Antique Centre in Australia”. They are not alone in their compliments as customers from far and near return to enjoy the wide range of antiques and collectables on display. Most customers comment favourably on the spaciousness of the centre with wide, wheel-chair and pram friendly aisles, and the stock that is offered in bright, clean, (though often over-flowing!) shops. Agnes Dando, the store manager, her managers and staff, are proud of their friendly and efficient service and the extensive array of competitively priced articles. Agnes is frequently complimented over the appealing and inspiring displays of goods that she and the other dealers arrange in the foyer, however it is not only known for it’s attention to presentation, it has a reputation for affordable prices too. Agnes says, “The success of the Centenary Antique Centre is because there is a happy mix of dealers. With the vast amount of knowledge they have and share with the customer, and one another, it has made this a very pleasant place to be.” Entry to both the on-site Grocery Museum and the Antique Centre is free, but you should put aside a couple of hours to explore this centre for it is BIG!
The Newcastle Post
ewcastle’s iconic Centenary Antique Centre opened its doors at 29 Centenary Road, Newcastle in 1993 and this month they are celebrating twenty years of being in business. They are housed in a historic wool storage warehouse over 100 years old which is nestled in the heart of the recently revamped, harbour-side “Honeysuckle Precinct”. With its generous space and rustic atmosphere, the large, historic building offered just the right mix of practicality and atmosphere the dealers were looking for when the store they leased in Beaumont Street, Hamilton was sold. It is now not only the longest running antique centre in Newcastle but it also rates amongst the oldest and most successful centres in the whole of NSW. As the years went by trading improved so much that the Centre had to increase its floor space by approximately four times the initial size, and it now boasts around 1400 square metres, making it also one of the largest antique centres in Australia. The number of shops has also increased from the original fourteen dealers to over thirty. This is a remarkable figure, as the antique trade in Australia is traditionally a very transient one. Amazingly too, six of the original fourteen dealers that began at the Centre in 1993, still remain today! These dealers display a huge variety of not only genuine antiques, but also old, and interesting collectables that cover a huge range. There is truly something for everyone! Many of the dealers prefer to offer an eclectic mix of items from the wild to whimsical,

Cholesterol controversy
here has been quite a buzz about the Catalyst show on the ABC last week. The show put forward the argument that if you have been taking medication to lower cholesterol then you may be doing a whole lot more harm than good. It’s called ‘Heart of the Matter’ and can still be watched on iview. If the story is correct it is basically saying that many medical professionals have been prescribing Statin medication under the incorrect assumption that cholesterol is bad for you. But even more disturbingly it also suggests that this incorrect assumption is actually being perpetuated, even promoted by companies that are making billions of dollars from the mistake! Understandably it has people talking and upset – to think that there are decisions being made in a boardroom somewhere that have profit being chosen over people’s lives is very unsettling on many levels. Companies with that sort of money actually influence medical fact. Universities teach from studies that are conducted by these same companies. Many institutions also receive massive funding and support from them. So the show raises questions on how naive are we being, in assuming that what our doctors are learning and considering as best practice is completely independent from pharmaceutical company influence. As I have said before, your health always comes down to you. You are responsible for it. Even the smartest health professional in the world is still just human.

Happiness in a good blog
n a serious lack of fashion inspiration this week, I began trawling through all avenues to find something that I could slip into and smile. I dug up old fashion magazines, flicked through books laying around and people-watched until I couldn’t stand to see another midriff or ill-fitting pair of shorts. Fed up and feeling just as uninspired as when I began, I hopped onto the net (the one thing which I had hoped to avoid) and typed “fashion” into the search bar. A whole new world revealed itself to me at that moment; the world of fashion blogging. I have never been a stranger to the Internet, in fact I am constantly using it for work, to catch up with friends and to keep up with the happenings of the world but I have never ventured into the world of blogs. I know too many people (my mum and my sister are the first that come to mind) who are addicted to blogs of all kinds so I have purposely kept my distance... until now. In despair, I clicked a link, and another, until before I knew it three hours had passed and I was feeling like I could conquer the world. I may have looked through hundreds of blogs, I honestly couldn’t tell you but what I can say is that there is something special about looking at pictures and reading the thoughts of a seemingly ordinary person, like yourself, and feeling inspired. Of the many that I searched through, my favourites were the ones with lots of pictures, a little bit of humour, links to where you could find similar or the same items featured in the post and the odd deviation from generic fashion ‘news’.

eeping old medicines can be a health risk, and disposing of unwanted medicines inappropriately can also pose a risk to the environment. So what do we do to ensure our homes are safe from medication misadventure? Well, what we don’t do is flush our unwanted medicines down the toilet or the kitchen sink; nor do we dispose of them in the household garbage. We shouldn’t assume that sewage treatment plants can effectively treat all substances contained in medicines and we don’t want fish and other aquatic life suffering the side effects of medicines we no longer want. The only safe method of disposal is to return your unwanted medicines to your local pharmacy. Medicine collection bins funded by the Commonwealth Government have been placed in every pharmacy in Australia. Once full, they are removed and the contents safely destroyed. It’s all part of the RUM (Return Unwanted Medicines) campaign. Each month the RUM program helps to prevent about 30 tonnes of medicines from potentially harming our environment or possibly harming us as well. So, maybe now’s the time to give your medicine chest a bit of a spring clean. For more information about RUM or simply to get some advice on how to sort your medicines and manage them better, call into your local Self Care Pharmacy. Physical education matters
n NSW, PDHPE is rightly recognised as a core subject. Personal Development, Health and Physical Education are linked together because it is through these areas that students learn the value of taking care of themselves through regular exercise, healthy eating and proper grooming. A healthy body allows more nutrients to flow to the brain, developing attention, concentration and being able to embed knowledge. A good PDHPE program will develop motor skills and coordination as well as building strength and stamina. Good health in childhood leads to a longer life, less drain on the economy and happier individuals. Sports and games can also encourage teamwork and cooperation, key skills in any job. This has to be fostered by quality PDHPE teachers. There is a difference to competing in sports, rather than competing with each other. Some children thrive more in individual sports. Taking part in sports can also encourage self-discipline as well as self-confidence whilst reducing stress. Giving children lifetime skills and activities, that will reduce the growing obesity problem in Australia (1 in 4), can only be a good thing. Relationships and health issues such as alcohol and bullying are also included with the curriculum for PDHPE. PDHPE is offered to all children and can be taken as an actual examination subject in senior school, but this is different to the core PDHPE. Encouraging our children to take part in healthy lifestyle must be role-modelled by all. In doing so everyone will become healthier, mentally and physically as well as happier.

ushfires have dominated the news in recent weeks, months earlier than bushfire stories generally appear in our lives. My thoughts go out to all those who have had to evacuate, to those who risked their lives fighting fires and to those who lost their homes. A colleague from the Blue Mountains was one of those that lost their home. Even as their neighbourhood burned down I was amazed at the calmness she was able to generate, knowing that her family was safe and recognising that their possessions are replaceable. During this emotional time much of the media has focused on debating the links between bushfires and climate change, but leading climate scientists have long argued that the relationship between climate and fire is settled. Professor Will Steffen, co-author of the upcoming Climate Council Bushfire and Climate Change report, last week stated: “For us it’s very clear cut, we are seeing an influence of climate change on bushfire conditions, particularly bushfire risk.” Despite the seeming clarity of this link the new Federal Environment Minister, Greg Hunt, was broadly criticised for quoting a popular user editable online encyclopaedia to belittle the role of climate change in increasing the frequency and severity of fire events stating that fire is simply part of the Australian experience. Whilst the use of Wikipedia as a source of scientific accuracy is questionable, it is disappointing to see the lack of courage from the government in addressing one of the most pressing issues facing our society.

irected by funnymen Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogan ‘This Is The End’ is a laughout-loud romp that posits the question, ‘how would a bunch of privileged Hollywood A-Listers handle the Apocolypse?’ The answer, of course is hilariously. The story centres around Jay Baruchel (‘Knocked Up’) who hits LA to visit his good mate Seth Rogan with the intention of taking it easy and catching up. However, things quickly speed up for Baruchel after he is dragged along to James Franco’s housewarming party. If that wasn’t bad enough, The Rapture hits downtown LA ushering in the Apocolypse. Now, Jay and Seth are desperately sheltering in James’ house for rescue along with a few other friends. They must band together to attempt to survive the end of the world, only for Jay to find that they are maybe a tad too dumb and superficial.

ith 25 albums under their collective belt, you’d be forgiven for thinking that punk-metal juggernaut Motorhead might want to take it easy in what should be the band’s twilight years. However, it seems as though there is plenty of life left in this band yet, if ‘Aftershock’ is any indication. While they are definitely not trying to break any new musical ground (and why the hell should they, they’re Motorhead), there is a palpable sense of urgency that is constantly bubbling underneath the surface of these tracks – making it one of their most exciting albums, in this reviewer’s opinion, since their 1986 slab ‘Orgasmatron’. Standouts include the thunderous opener ‘Heartbreaker’ and the slow burner ‘Silence When You Speak to Me.’ Rawk!

here’s little denying that, since releasing their debut long player ‘Here Come the Lies’ in 2002, The Drones have been at the forefront of musical adventurism in the Australian music scene. Their sound, almost uncatergorisable switches effortlessly from slightly off-kilter ballads through to full on rock assaults. However, the band have taken this ethos to the next level with their stunning seventh album, ‘I See Seaweed’ and for frontman Gareth Liddiard, the success of the album was to find the spaces between the notes. The band enlisted the services of keyboard player Steve Hesketh and Liddiard told TE that the addition of the extra member helped immeasurably in fleshing out the Drones sound even further. “Having Steve in the band really frees both Dan [Luscombe, guitar] and I to stop playing – you just can’t underestimate the power of silence” he said. “Also the piano can get away with things that guitars can’t – some things that you are able to get away with on the piano just sound w**ky on the guitar so it also frees us up to go places musically that we couldn’t before.
If you caught The Drones set, opening for Neil Young, at Bimbadgen earlier this year, you would have witnessed a masterclass in musical tension with lashings of light and shade courtesy of the muscular guitar acrobatics of Gareth Liddiard and Dan Luscombe and the dirgy rhythm section of Mike Noga and Fiona Kitschin. While there set may’ve been, at times, at odds with the winery crowd, there was a sense of danger, musical antagonism and a palpable fragility, a feeling that everything could topple over at any given moment, but never does, that is reflected perfectly on the album. “Yeah that show was pretty crazy – we were only supposed to play the one show but ended up playing the tour,” Liddiard said. “I guess that sometimes the crowd didn’t like us but we really tried to feed off that and give it back to them in the performance.” For Liddiard, the proof is in the performance and he said punters could expect no less than 100 per cent when The Drones hit the stage. “When I see a good gig it’s proof that rock and roll can be so much more than just music,” he said. “It might sound a bit w**ky, but The Drones are the real thing onstage – we’re more MC5 than ELO, if you know what I mean.” Catch The Drones when they play at the Cambridge Hotel on Friday, November 22.

fter a brilliant turn in the runaway smash-hit film ‘The Sapphires’, Jessica Mauboy’s star is showing no signs of slowing down. Her latest album ‘Beautiful’ has already netted the affable pop star two gold certified singles in ‘To The End of the Earth’ and ‘Pop A Bottle (Fill Me Up)’ and she is about to embark on her first national headlining tour – an extensive 27-date tour that will leave few Aussie stones unturned. Jessica was kind enough to take time out from rehearsals to have a quick chat to TE. Hi Jessica thanks for the chat. So what’s happening at the moment? Rehearsing, rehearsing and more rehearsing! So you must be looking forward to getting out on the road for the To The End of The Earth tour. It’s a pretty hectic schedule. It’s been a crazy few months but I am beyond excited to be taking this tour on the road and connecting with my fans again. A hearty congratulations are in order on the album, by the way. Can you tell me a little bit about the writing and recording of it and how the process differed to or indeed built on what you accomplished on ‘Get ‘Em Girls’ and ‘Been Waiting’? I have been lucky to work with some incredible people on all my records – in this instance, I feel like I was a lot stronger and more in control over the outcome of the
songs. I guess I feel more confident in knowing what I wanted and how to convey that. I was involved in every element of the process. Who or what was influencing you during the writing and recording of ‘Beautiful’? Travelling so much with The Sapphires was incredible, however I did feel myself missing my family and Australia. A lot of these emotions ended up influencing songs on the album. Given the phenomenal success of ‘The Sapphires’, did you feel any pressure to, in a way, recapture that success with the album or was it more of a case of just getting in the studio and doing the songs justice? I was worried about getting back into the headspace to write an album after all the touring around the world with The Sapphires, but once I got into the studio – it all just came out! You must ’ve known when you read ‘The Sapphires’ script that there was some gold in those pages, but did you have any idea that it would take off like it has? None of us had any idea of how big the film was to become. I feel so blessed to have been a part of an incredible production that told an important story in our history and to take that story around the world. So who or what was it that made you want to pick up a mic in the first place? ME! I always had a hairbrush in my hand from as long as I can remember. Mum & Dad were always very supportive but I think I drove them crazy with all my singing! How would you say you have

www.newcastlepost.com.au evolved as a performer since the ‘Idol’ days? I have learnt so much about who I am and have grown up a lot too – I think that’s reflected in the music that I am making now. If there was one thing you’d want people to take away from a Jessica Mauboy show, what would it be? FUN! What is your proudest moment to date? I have so many moments that I have to pinch myself – the most recent was performing at the Emmy’s Governors Ball and then with the kids at the Yipirinya School out in Alice Springs where I am an ambassador. Both the staff and the kids at the school are amazing - I feel incredibly proud and priviledged to work with them. So after the To The End of the Earth tour eventually wraps up, what’s next on the agenda for Jessica Mauboy? Hopefully a much needed holiday! And of course continue to work this album. After that who knows, there are so many exciting things on the horizon, I am just taking one step at a time! Catch Jessica Mauboy at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre on Thursday, November 14. TE is giving you the chance to win a Jessica Mauboy prize pack that includes a double pass to the show and a `poster. To enter, email your name and contact details to editorial@ newcastlepost.com.au with Jessica Mauboy in the subject line by no later than 5pm on Monday November 11. Winners will be notified by phone.

o say that 2013 has been a trying year for Frenzal Rhomb frontman Jay Whalley would be an understatement. In February, the singer underwent brain surgery to remove a pig tapeworm from his brain that he picked up in Central America four years ago. Thaqnkfully, Whalley’s surgery was a complete success and he is back in his rightful place as the frontman of the elder statesmen of Aussie punk rock. TE caught up with Whalley and we found him with a burgeoning curiosity for herpetology. “Yeah I’m just at my mum’s house in Byron Bay and I’m looking out the window at this massive three-metre diamond python outside,” he said. “I’ve never seen one before – it’s just staring at me. I’m pretty sure they’re not venomous, though. I hope not because it’s a big ba****d.” Whalley said he was champing at the bit to get back out on the road after Frenzal were forced to pull out of the Descendents tour, earlier this year, due to the surgery although he added that he was disappointed that the tapeworm didn’t bestow any supernatural powers on him.
“Yeah I was definitely hoping to get some powers but I am still limited to one language, I can’t read people’s minds and I certainly can’t control snakes,” he said. “We’ve done a few shows already so it’s great to finally get back to normal, I mean, brain surgery is pretty heavy.” Now with the “unpleasantness” behind him, the band are showing no signs of slowing down with a new album in the works as well as a contribution to a tribute album for the late No Use For A Name frontman Tony Sly. “Fat Mike [NOFX, Fat Wreck Chords] asked us to contribute and we chose a track of Tony’s solo record. It was all well and good to be asked but we didn’t really have the money to record it so we did it on the cheap at my studio [The Pet Food Factory]. “We’re also working on our next album at the moment - so we’re busy writing songs and trying to corral all the members who live interstate.” So, after plying their self-effacing trade for more than 20 years, what is it about Frenzal Rhomb that has kept audiences coming back? “I’d say it’s more a damning indictment on our society that we’re allowed to continue to make records,” he quipped. Frenzal Rhomb the Cambridge Hotel on Saturday, November 9.

Nuanced folk-pop triumph
To help capture the live vibe, the band headed over to Nashville and enlisted the services of producer Brad Jones (Missy Higgins, Justin Townes Earle) and Marou said, Jones’ playing background made proceedings that much easier. Aside from bringing in their touring band to flesh out their sound, the pair also enlisted the services of some “heavy friends”” to add their musical gravitas to the album, including arguably Australia’s greatest songwriter Don Walker who co-wrote the track ‘Luck’’ with Busby and legendary Hawaiian kona guitarist and pedal steel player Al Perkins (Flying Burrito Brothers, Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Emmylou Harris). Catch Busby Marou when they play at the Small Ballroom on Friday, November 8.

t seems as though the “difficult second album” syndrome that has plagued so many bands has passed Rockhampton-born outfit Busby Marou well and truly by, with their sophomore effort ‘Farewell To Fitzroy’ taking the gloriously nuanced folk pop and nimble storytelling, that was central to their debut, to the next level with a much larger and complete album, both in sound and scope. While originally known as a duo, Tom Busby and Jeremy Marou have fleshed out their sound with a full band on ‘Farewell to Fitzroy’ and Marou told TE that, given the band had evolved quite considerably ince the duo days, the pair wanted the album to reflect this.

oodoo Express are a four-piece blues rock outfit hailing from the swamps of Newcastle. Four friends banded together to hang out, jam and to perform the rock and blues standards that they loved, tweaked in their own inimitable style. Little did they realise their musical pedigrees would create a chemistry that would lead to the composition of fantastic original songs, a live LP recording, and the surreal chance to perform alongside international acting and musical luminary David Hasselhoff. After years of playing shows across the country, the guys are better than ever and ready to showcase what they have to offer in a massive end of year show. Voodoo Express will be joined on stage by guest legends Grant Walmsley of The Screaming Jets and Freebird, Ngariki of High Horse and guitarist of Rose Tattoo Dai Pritchard. Catch Voodoo Express at Lizotte’s on Sunday, November 10.

hen it comes to ivory ticklers, there aren’t too many out there with the chops or the big personalities as Elton John and Billy Joel. Between them, the pair have a staggering amount of hits under their belts and have etched out a place as some of the most successful recording artists in musical history. Now, the music of Captain Fantastic and the Piano Man will be brought to life in a dynamic tribute featuring two of the best in the business – Lance Strauss, aka Elton Jack and Jimmy Mann, aka BigShot. Strauss told TE that audiences could expect a highly dynamic affair with the show starting out in intimate mode with the pair playing some of Elton and Billy’s best loved ballads including ‘Your Song’ and ‘ ‘Just The Way You Are’ before being joined by the band for such rockers as ‘Movin Out’, ‘I’m Still Standing’ and ‘Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me’.
“They [Billy and Elton] really are two fabulous artists who have written some of the best-loved songs out there,” Strauss said. “Because they have so many big songs it can be a real problem deciding what goes in the show but there are some “must plays” like ‘Crocodile Rock’ and ‘Rocket Man’ and both Jimmy and I are really into performance so it will be a very exciting show.” Strauss’ Elton John journey has lasted for 25 years – from impressing friends at parties to gracing the stages of the Sydney Opera House and the Royal Albert Hall. “Most of my life I looked like Elton and I also played the piano so I was the guy at parties who sat at the piano and played his songs,” he said. “I have a background in musical theatre and in 1986 I had the opportunity to play Elton in a play about John Lennon and then the following year I ended up winning ‘Red Faces’ – the segment on ‘Hey Hey It’s Saturday’ and I’ve been doing it ever since.” Catch ‘Tour De Force: A Tribute to Elton John and Billy Joel’ at Nelson Bay Diggers on Saturday, November 9.

hen serving up modern Australian cuisine, it can be easy for a restaurant to become another blurred face in a crowded market, so when I visited Falls Restaurant at Kahibah Sports Club I was looking for something to make it stand out. Happily, I found it, not just in the food, but in the form of jovial staff members, Steph and Marvin. Upbeat, chatty and funny, the attitudes of Steph and Marvin were apt for the modern Australian theme. I could have quite happily cracked a beer with either of them and spent the night discussing the finer points of Michael Clarke’s batting technique or innovations in the Hills Hoist industry. Alas, there was delicious food to be consumed, so we couldn’t talk all night. My dining partner and I started with some cheese bread, and he also
enjoyed some panko calamari rings, which he reported was high up on the satisfaction stakes. I chose to skip an entrée, lest I need to be rolled out later. Moving on to mains, and continuing with his seafood theme, my dining partner chose the beer battered flathead fillets, while I opted for the grilled chicken breast, served with avocado and hollandaise sauce. Again, no complaints. The flathead was gleefully devoured while I savoured my chicken – tender, juicy and just the right size. Both were served with a robust salad and tasty chips that were crunchy on the outside, but light and fluffy within. I then took on a passionfruit cheesecake for desert, while my dining partner couldn’t face another mouthful. Pleased with my life choices, I went to town on the cheesecake, but with the right thickness of crust and the sweet passionfruit topping, it was hard not to. So if you haven’t dined at Falls Restaurant yet, where the bloody hell are you?

Some Bennies
for your thoughts

f you’re after unashamedly infectious hooks, then that’sd exactly what you’re going to get at the Great Northen this weekend when Melbourne’s purveyors of party peppered punk, The Bennies, hit the stage. With their first album ‘Party Party Party’ setting the agenda quite succinctly, The Bennies have shown that they don’t want that party to end with their latest long player ‘Rainbows In Space’ which drops this week.
Like some kind of lethal speedball, ‘Rainbows In Space’, combines all the high energy, reggae-tinged punk rock party anthems your tiny heart can endure. There’s chilled out ska rhythms, brain-melting solos, bouncing basslines, speedy hi-hats and some of the most addictive choruses ever to seize upon your brain. Catch The Bennies at the Great Northern Hotel on Saturday, November 9.
t seems as though swampy blues soaked rock and roll is the order of the day in venues across Australia with acts like Chase the Sun and Marshall Okel kicking goals wherever they go. There is another act that looks set to join the ranks of the Aussie blues rock elite – Transvaal Diamond Syndicate. The band began life in 2009 and, almost immediately, set tongues wagging largely due to their raw, energetic and, as some hyperbolists would have you believe, primeval live shows. Not ones to shy away from the rigours of the road, Transvaal Diamond Syndicate have been plugging away, almost non-stop since packing up their gig bags. A slot on 2011’s Byron Bay Bluesfest alongside the likes of Bob Dylan, Michael Franti and Ben Harper kicked off a year that would have the band release a foot-stompin’ as anything 7-track mini album, ‘Sins Of The Blessed’ that is as diverse as the terrain the band covered, deftly skipping from straight blues jams through to some rockabilly, stoner groove and a bit of roots-esque balladry.

gets bandied about quite a bit, if there was one band that could lay claim to the title, it’s Transvaal Diamond Syndicate. In keeping with their apparent daemonic quest to achieve white line fever, last year the boys nutted out a mammoth 63-date tour, but this year they’re ramping it up with a ridiculously ambitious 70-show, five-month Oz tour. “Basically, if you don’t love music, I wouldn’t recommend it,” frontman Christian Tryhorn said. The boys are hitting the road to promote their latest single ‘Estranged Blues’ from their upcoming long player so get along to see what all the fuss is about. Catch Transvaal Diamond Syndicate at the Wickham Park Hotel on Saturday, November 9 with Heartattack and Vine and the Orana Hotel on Sunday, November 10.

POKOLBIN WILD BRUMBY BAR
After a massive 40-date East Coast tour to promote the release, the bad hit back again, in 2010 with the EP ‘Diamonds And Dust’ and again got tongues wagging. The track ‘Behind That Smile’ took out a highly commended spot in the blues and roots category of the Q-song awards while the track ‘Home’ toolk out the number one spot in Brisbane radio station 4ZZZ’s hot 100 of 2010. Lat year was pretty much the same for this sonic workhorse with the band undertaking a mammoth 63-date East Coast tour from Cairns to Tassie (and all points in between) to promote the single ‘Pistols At Dawn’. The guys racked up an impressive 20,000plus kilometres in their trusty tour van – The TDS Express. There’s no denying that this is one band that loves touring. Bowls: Title for Lambton
L
“What do you say about Liz Ellis that would do her justice as a player and as a worldwide ambassador for Netball,” Netball NSW President Wendy Archer AM said. “Liz was not only a champion netballer but is revered as one of Australia’s finest athletes. Liz continues to give tirelessly of her time to promote the sport through coaching clinics, and her media profile puts netball to the fore in the broader community.” Barbara Long’s contribution to the sport of netball in NSW spans seven decades, from her days as a young netballer in the mid 1940’s, to her involvement throughout District Association and State level organisations. In 1965, Long formed the Southern District Sports Association Women’s Basketball for youth club, followed by the Southern District Women’s Basketball Association the following year. This Association would later be known as Liverpool City Netball Association, of which Long was the Foundation President for 18 years from 1968 – 1985. Her commitment to Liverpool City extended well beyond the Committee
Room, as Long coached both Liverpool City Representative teams (1965-1980) and Liverpool City State League Team (1996-98), and was a member of the Selection Committee (1965-1980). Long also managed (1966-68) and coached at junior State (1970-73 and 1981-1986), senior State (1974) and night State level (1974). She was also a Netball NSW Selector for 15 years (1973-1988) and was Netball NSW Junior Vice President in 1976. At the State Dinner, Netball NSW also paid “Special Recognition” to the 2006 Sydney Swifts, who during the 2006 Commonwealth Bank Trophy competition became the first team to go through an entire National Netball League season undefeated, winning 16 successive games to lift the title. Not since the great St George rugby league team went through a season unvanquished in 1959 had a club achieved such a feat at national level. The 2013 State Dinner was held on the courts of the Anne Clark Centre, the home of Netball NSW for the past 34 years. This will be the final State Dinner before Netball NSW moves to its new centre of excellence in Sydney Olympic Park during 2014. The Netball NSW State Dinner is a celebration of the sport in the State throughout the 2013 season. In addition to acknowledging the performances of the NSW representative teams at the National Netball Championships, Australian Netball League and ANZ Championship, a number of individuals were honoured for their achievements during 2013.

ambton No.2 Grade players created history last Wednesday by winning the Club’s inaugural No.2 Grade Newcastle District Three Threes title. They defeated Lorn Park 61/51 in Game 3 of the Round Robin Series played to decide the winner and runner-up. The trio of Peter Thomas, Brad Dawson & Barry Cartwright laid the foundations for the win defeating Eddie Phillips 28/15. The combination of Paul Andreassen, Brett Pratten & Chris Evans downed Steve Jackson 22/18, while Ian Mann was the lone successful Lorn Park skipper 18/11 over Barry Hewat. Lambton claiming the title with 2 wins plus 29 shots, with Wallsend No.1 runner-up with 1 win plus 6 shots. The Annual Representative fixture between Newcastle Zone 2 and Hunter District Bowling Association was played at Kurri Kurri Bowling Club on Sunday. In a close hard fought game Newcastle scored a narrow 114/109 overall victory with 3 ½ to 2 ½ rink wins. The rink of David King, Jason Pietraszek, Terry Antram and Richard Girvan scored a decisive 27/10 result over the Hunter’s Rohan Dennis, Josh Bell, Andrew Rees and Corey Parker. The masterboard had been equal some 7 times during this typical close encounter between the two Associations. Raymond Terrace Bowling Club played host last weekend to the 2013 Bowls NSW Rookies State Singles and Pairs Finals. Graeme Harriot (Kootingal BC) won the Singles and Linsday Burden and Craig Jeffrey (Dubbo Railway BC) took out the Pairs.

etball Legend Elizabeth (Liz) Ellis AM and administrator Barbara Long were inducted into the Netball NSW Hall of Fame on Saturday evening, 2 November, at the 2013 Netball NSW State Dinner. Regarded as Australia’s most successful netballer and leading circle defender, Liz Ellis played a record 122 times for Australia from 1993 – 2007, and was the most capped Commonwealth Bank Trophy player in history with 173 matches. Hailing from Hawkesbury Netball Association, Ellis was an ever present in Netball NSW junior and senior State teams, and was a member of the NSW Open Team who won four national titles (1992, 1993, 1994, 1997), three of these during the Golden Boot era. In a career full of highlights, Ellis won three World Championships (1995, 1999, 2007), two Commonwealth Games Gold Medals (1998, 2002), and four National Premierships with the Sydney Swifts (2001, 2004, 2006, 2007). In 2006, led by Ellis, the Sydney Swifts achieved an historic undefeated season and were awarded National Team of the Year at that year’s Australian Sport Awards. Ellis, who captained her country from 2004-2007, also received a number of individual accolades during her career, being named Australia’s Most Valuable Netballer on four occasions (1996, 1998, 2002, 2006). In 2008, Netball Australia paid tribute to the revered champion and former Australian captain by introducing the Liz Ellis Diamond, the sport’s premier individual award.

Tegan McCloy
KEN CLIFFORD
N
ot many Australian teens can say they have owned and used a shotgun since they were 12 years old, but competitive clay shooter Tegan McCloy can. The 19-year-old electronics technician can be found at Newcastle and Lake Macquarie Clay Target Club’s Awaba shooting range every Wednesday from 4:40pm until dark. Having grown up in a family of clay shooting enthusiasts, McCloy said she often forgot about the huge responsibility of using a shotgun. “There’s so much freedom, even though there is so much responsibility with the firearms”, she said. At this year’s Hunter Academy of Sport Presentation Nights, Tegan was presented with the Dave Williams Award which is presented to the athlete that the Academy considers to be the most outstanding member from all of its 28 talent development program squads. As well as being an outstanding competitor Tegan has also become a fine young lady. McCloy has mastered the art of shooting small, round clay targets that are voiceactivated. She practices on an Olympic standard International Shooting Sport Federation trap, in which the targets travel at 100km/h from one of three directions. In 2010, she attended the Junior Women’s World Championships and won a teen silver medal and set an Asia-Pacific record for the number of targets shot. McCloy said achievements were just the icing on the cake. “When it’s something that you love and can take that far it’s worth every blood, sweat and tear”, she said.

Leading 2-0 with 30 minutes remaining, Newcastle conceded goals to Marcos Flores via a penalty and then to Mile Sterjovski in the 80th minute. “We were pretty comfortable there and we gave them two goals,” Jets coach Gary van Egmond said. “I thought they were two preventable goals, similar to the Sydney game where we gave them two goals as well. But I thought the general play after the initial 10 or 15 was pretty good. “The issue is obviously just individual mistakes, but I’m very proud of the boys. I thought they fought really hard today for the club and the supporters and for each other. If they continue to do that, then we’ll win more than we lose.” Newcastle are on the road this week, playing Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium on Saturday afternoon at 5.30pm. Adelaide are mid-table after four rounds with a win and a draw to their credit so far and are coming off a 2-1 loss to the Western Sydney Wanderers.
