“What is the one thing that stresses you about living life in the Hunter?” I challenged my dinner party guests recently. “Traffic!” came the cry in unison. Really? on’t fool with our pool. That was the message handed down to Newcastle City Council by around 100 Stockton residents who gathered at Stockton Swimming Centre on Sunday to protest over Council’s cuts to the pool’s operating hours, high admission fees and the lack of professional lifeguards on local beaches on weekends. Some demonstrators refused
to leave the facility as the gates closed on Sunday afternoon as an act of defiance against Council’s decision to close the pool at 3pm on Sundays, while others brandished placards demanding reduced entry fees and realistic operating hours and called on Council to “improve, not remove,” community services. Stockton resident and protest organiser, Chelle Heath, Newcastle City Council was depriving the Stockton community of a safe place for children to learn to swim. “Water safety is a massive part of our lives and we believe Newcastle City Council has a responsibility to make sure that our children have a
place where they can learn to swim safely,” she said. “The pool might close at 3pm but then the beach is not always that safe – they’re not giving us any alternatives. “Really it’s a matter of social justice.” Labor councillors Jason Dunn and Stephanie Posniak attended the demonstration, as well as representatives from the Mayfield and Beresfield Swimming Centres. Beresfield Swimming Club president, Greg Skinner, said pool users needed to form a united front in the face of Council’s cuts to season length and operating hours across the area.
