Hunter remains Labor heartland despite crushing election loss Amelia Parrott

Fresh from a resounding victory, Prime Minister-elect, Tony Abbott, has headed to Canberra this week to hold his first party room meeting and to finalise his frontbench lineup, ahead of being sworn in as Australia’s new Prime Minister early next week. While moving quickly to assure the electorate he would “govern for all Australians”, Mr Abbott was clear to outline his policy priorities...

he Labor Party has managed to keep its stronghold in the Hunter region despite losing 15 seats across the nation in a crushing election defeat on Saturday. Labor will retain the seats of Newcastle, Shortland, Charlton and Hunter, while Liberal MP, Bob Baldwin, will hold the seat of Paterson. Former Newcastle councillor, Sharon Claydon, won the seat of Newcastle with a comfortable margin of 59.3 per cent to 40.7 per cent, after preferences, over Liberal hopeful Jaimie Abbott who had campaigned relentlessly across the electorate in the 18 months leading up to September 7. Celebrating her victory at the Seven Seas Hotel in Carrington on Saturday night, Ms Claydon told elated supporters and former Newcastle MPs Sharon Grierson and Allan Morris, she was ready to represent the people of Newcastle in Canberra. “It really was time to put a stop to what some people thought was a bit of Liberal Party momentum in this town because I’m sick and tired of those guys talking our city down,” she said. “I know it’s going to be a really tough new parliamentary environment but Newcastle needs someone who is going to stand up for them in the face of all those horrendous Tony Abbott cuts. o, we have a new Prime Minister. Again. While it may seem that every man and his dog (including the Abbott family dog, Maisie, pictured) was baying for Labor blood, the result of Saturday’s poll isn’t as straightforward as some like to think. Don’t get me wrong – the Coalition has been given a strong mandate, with the majority of Australian voters choosing change and with it, a conservative government. But that doesn’t mean that everyone is happy. In fact, there are a lot of people who are genuinely dismayed by the prospect of Tony Abbott leading this country and what it will mean for a range of issues including education funding, climate policy and the advancement of marriage equality. Mr Abbott was quick to address this divide in his victory speech on Saturday evening, and again on Sunday. Actually, we saw him first float the idea of being a “leader for all”, rather than the leader of a “tribe” on the Friday before the election, as he laid the groundwork for what will be a recurring theme of his Prime

from truly negative territory. That, and an unruly Senate made up of some truly strange fringe party representatives, will be Tony Abbott’s two biggest problems. Having said that, I think he will prove to be a surprisingly competent PM. We had such high expectations of Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard, and look how that turned out. People’s expectations of Abbott are modest. Australian politics benefits from having two strong major parties who take it in turns to lead the country and implement their reforms with scrutiny from the other side, the smaller parties and independents. I look forward to watching Labor rebuild over the next three years – I think we’ll see a strong alternative government, perhaps not in this term, but certainly in the near future. And that, just a like a Coalition victory over the weekend, is what this country needs. Like one KRudd, I too must zip. This is my final edition as editor of the Post and I am handing the reins over to our new editor, Paul Monforte, who will grace this page from next week. Thank you for your support. I wish you all the best.

Shortland MP Jill Hall chats to voters.

Charlton MP Pat Conroy casts his vote.

Continues from page 1 “The Liberals gave it absolutely everything they’ve got but Newcastle stayed faithful.” Ms Claydon said Ms Abbott had put in a considerable effort on the campaign trail and admitted she was expecting the result to be much tighter. Pat Conroy will succeed a retiring Greg Combet as Member for Charlton. Mr Conroy was expected to win the seat by a considerable margin after Liberal Party opponent, Kevin Baker, was forced to resign

from the LNP early in the election campaign after reports surfaced that he had posted lewd comments on a motoring enthusiast’s website he managed. Mr Conroy was quick to brush off suggestions that Mr Baker’s resignation had improved his chances of election. “We certainly didn’t change a thing about our campaign,” he said. “In fact, if you look at the results in our electorate a lot of people saw Mr Baker’s name on the ballot paper as the Liberal

Ms Hall, who has held the seat of Shortland since 1998, said she had expected a strong result from the LNP after what she called the strongest Liberal campaign in

Coalition coasts to victory

Prime Minister-elect Tony Abbott says he will ‘govern for all Australians’

F

resh from a resounding victory, Prime Minister-elect, Tony Abbott, has headed to Canberra this week to hold his first party room meeting and to finalise his frontbench line-up, ahead of being sworn in as Australia’s new Prime Minister early next week. While moving quickly to assure the

electorate he would “govern for all Australians”, Mr Abbott was clear to outline his policy priorities speaking to the media for the first time since the result on Sunday. “Obviously, a very early item of business is scrapping the carbon tax,” Mr Abbott said. “There’s border security, there’s economic security and the people expect, quite rightly, that the incoming government will build a strong and prosperous economy for a safe and secure Australia.” Despite securing a strong mandate, the Coalition face an uphill battle passing its program of legislation from the middle of next year, as the new Senate, which could have as many as 18 senators from the minor political parties, reconvenes. Mr Abbott fired an early warning shot to the various micro party members on Monday, calling on them to respect the mandate of the incoming Coalition Government and said he would look to reform the current senate voting process to address complex preference deals that determined this year’s results. At the time of going to print, the Coalition held 85 seats in the House of Representatives to Labor’s 54, with a number of seats still to be decided.

Baldwin wins comfortably

Joel Fitzgibbon casts his vote on Saturday

iberal’s Bob Baldwin has held onto the seat of Paterson and will now enter his fifth consecutive term as the local member. It was a comfortable and predicted win for Mr Baldwin, who defeated Labor candidate Bay Marshall by approximately 18,000 votes, or 23 per cent of the first preference votes. The two party preferred vote, however, benefited Mr Marshall, reducing the margin to 15,000, or 19 per cent of the vote. In a trend that followed the rest the country, Paterson saw a massive swing against the Labor Party (8.33 per cent at the time of printing, with 81.22 per cent of the vote counted), with each of the other candidates gaining votes. The biggest swing was toward Jayson Packett of the Palmer United Party, who picked up 6.24 per cent of the vote; however Greens candidate, John Brown, also saw a .51 per cent swing, bringing his total percentage of the vote to 6.5 per cent. This will be Mr Baldwin’s sixth term in Parliament, having held the position from 1996-1998, and again since 2001.

he Federal seat of Hunter is now marginal, after one of the biggest swings in the country returned Labor candidate Joel Fitzgibbon to the post by just the narrowest of margins. Previously considered to be a safe seat, Saturday’s election saw a swing of 9.57 per cent against Labor at the time of printing. The votes also swung against Greens candidate John Brown and the Christian Democratic Party’s Richard Stretton. 7.78 per cent of the total swing went to Jennifer Stefanac of the Palmer United Party, while Nationals candidate Michael Johnsen picked up 4.08 per cent. In the two party preferred vote, Mr Johnsen gained 8.59 per cent, with only 6,000 votes separating him and Mr Fitzgibbon. Mr Johnsen said that he was pleased with the overall result. “To have achieved a 9 per cent swing is an incredible achievement,” he said on Sunday. “That achievement in itself is worth the battle.” Although the campaign is over, the war of words has not subsided, with Mr Johnsen saying the Mr Fitzgibbon is now on notice, and Mr Fitzgibbon putting the anti-Labor swing down partially to Mr Johnsen’s ‘dishonest’ campaign. “[Mr Johnsen] ran an expensive scare campaign against me, and it worked,” Mr Fitzgibbon said “They spread untrue messages, but I’m pleased he wasn’t rewarded for it.” Mr Johnsen said that he hopes Mr Fitzgibbon will pick up his game now that he knows people are watching. For now, Mr Fitzgibbon said his job will be to earn back the trust and confidence of his electorate by fighting for funds that had been promised by the former Labor Government, including the $7 million for Maitland’s Levee project. “Currently a big dark cloud hangs over Hunter projects, and I will be petitioning for the funding commitments to be filled.” @melcomber

Opposition Leader highlights the flow-on effect of any cuts

A 35-year-old Cardiff man has been charged after allegedly kicking a police dog in Tighes Hill. Police were patrolling the area at around 3.30am on Tuesday, September 3, when they directed a man to stop; he ran away and a police dog was called to the scene. The police dog tracked the man’s progress and, a short time later, he was found under a house in Park Road, where it’s alleged the man kicked out at the dog. He was taken to Waratah Police station. The dog was uninjured.

I

t is not just doctors and nurses feeling the pressure of understaffing in hospitals across the Hunter region. According to State Opposition Leader, John Robertson, cleaners, kitchen staff, ward clerks, radiographers, pathologists and speech therapists are all bearing the brunt of the O’Farrell Government’s $3 billion cuts to the health sector. Mr Robertson was in town last Tuesday meeting with nurses from the Calvary Mater at Waratah, John Hunter Hospital at New Lambton Heights and Belmont Hospital in Lake Macquarie. “While the O’Farrell Government talks about nurses and doctors being exempt from cuts, the fact is it’s more than doctors and nurses that make our health system work,” he said whilst visiting the Mater. “If you remove some of the other staff, it puts more pressure and a greater workload on our nurses.” Joanne Purdue, a clinical nurse educator and president of the NSW Nurses and Midwives Association Calvary Mater Newcastle Branch, shared the Opposition Leader’s concerns. “[In the hospital] it’s a collaboration of everyone working together, from our kitchen to domestic staff, we all make a great team together providing patient care and when you start removing some of those services, it does affect the larger services like allied health, nursing and medicine,” she said. NSW Health Minister, Jillian Skinner,

NSW Opposition Leader, John Robertson and Wallsend MP, Sonia Hornery, with hospital staff at the Calvary Mater last week

vehemently denied any health cuts in the Hunter region. “Labor knows there is no $3 billion cut to the health system,” she said in a statement. “There are no cuts to the Hunter New England Local Health District – in fact, this financial year, like all financial years since the election, the district’s budget will go up. “In 2013/2014, the NSW health budget

has gone up by 5.2 per cent to a record $17.9 billion.” Ms Skinner said the increase in funds this financial year will deliver 69,000 extra emergency department attendances, 34,000 additional hospital admissions, surgery for 3,000 more patients and additional intensive care services. @amelia_parrott

Pressure on hospital staff

A Rathmines man has been charged with a number of armed robbery offences, including the robbery of a bottle shop near Toronto last week where a man was allegedly stabbed. At about 7pm on Monday, September 2, a 22-year-old man entered a bottle shop on Haydenbrook Road at Woodrising and allegedly threatened the 50-yearold male owner with a knife. It’s alleged the shop owner was stabbed a number of times during an altercation and the man fled a short time later. Police located the suspected. He is charged with the armed robbery of a Rathmines bottle shop on May 2 and again on June 27; the armed robbery of a convenience store in Blackalls Park on July 5 and again on July 19; the armed robbery of a video store in Toronto on August 15 and the aggravated armed robbery of a newsagency at Blackalls Park on August 30.

Good feedback on Warners Bay

am very pleased with the level of interest shown by the community and local businesses in the development of a town centre strategy for Warners Bay. I attended two workshops held in August and received appreciation from participants that the consultation process acknowledged their views. I understand that there is continued concern about future building heights in Warners Bay. Council is expanding on the community input received from the first

round of consultation, to now include a survey on how buildings should look, what development scenarios are appropriate and how tall buildings should be in Warners Bay. The online survey includes photographs, illustrations and questions about preferred types and designs of buildings and the height and location of development. I encourage esidents to continue to provide feedback. To vote on how buildings should look and how tall they should be, go to www.lakemac.com.au/warnersbay.

Program makes environmental upgrades easier

O

ur 2030 plan for Newcastle includes a clear mandate to work with local businesses of all sizes to deliver best practice energy and water efficient buildings and infrastructure for our wonderful city. We realise that many business owners share this commitment to environmental sustainability but can find it difficult to get the money together to make retrospective environmental upgrades to their buildings. To help address this, Council has launched an innovative finance scheme for commercial and industrial building owners in the Newcastle LGA. Under the new Environmental Upgrade Agreements (or EUAs) program, non-residential building owners can secure low-risk finance for energy, water and other environmental upgrades, for which the loan is attached to the property and not the building owner. An EUA is a three-way agreement between a building owner, a finance provider and the local council and is already being successfully carried out

in a number of locations including Lake Macquarie, Parramatta, Sydney and Melbourne. Under the model, a finance provider lends funds to a building owner for environmental upgrade works. Council then uses its rates system to collect the loan repayments from the building owner, which are then passed on to the finance provider until the loan is repaid. To be eligible for a EUA, building upgrades must improve the energy, water or environmental efficiency or sustainability of the building in question. Works might include lighting upgrades, improvements to heating, ventilation and airconditioning systems, installation of solar electricity (PV) systems or improvements to the energy efficiency of data centres and communication technology. Student union calls for more help to address assaults on foreign students Amelia Parrott

N

ewcastle University Student Union (NUSA) representatives have called for more involvement from local and state governments to help solve the problem of racist taunts and assaults on students around the University of Newcastle’s Callaghan campus. The call for assistance comes less than two weeks after two separate assaults on students occurred within 24 hours of each other – one of which allegedly involved a student being struck with a dumbbell – angering the university’s international student community. NUSA international convenor, Eduardo Carvajal, said the university has a number of initiatives in place to ensure the safety of its students, including the University of Newcastle Safety and Crime Committee, a partnership between the university, NUSA, NSW Police and the Newcastle City Council, but said more needed to be done to engage the wider community. “At the present time the committee advocates for whatever happens on campus but we need to find the tools to do something bigger than that because at the end of the day most of the crime...most of the racist issues are happening out in the community,” he said. “We can easily say the campus is quite safe, even if we have some incidents, but the issue will not go away if we have just a bubble solution.

Attacks at uni ‘a concern’

Students serve up Kuwaiti cuisine as part of Cultural Awakenings, a recent University of Newcastle initiative to promote multiculturalism

“I hope this committee, in the future, [has strategies] coming from the very top with local and state government [contributing].” Newcastle crime manager Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Humphrey said despite the recent increase in reportage of assaults around the university, there is currently no data to suggest a spike in crime.

The University of Newcastle has upped its after-hours security patrols in response to the recent assaults, increasing foot, bike and vehicle patrols by campus security guards. “Callaghan is the size of North Lambton so there is always going to be some minor crime – stealing, malicious damage – but it is not an unsafe place to be,” he said.

“We capture all uni-related data and the crime rates in the area are actually low.” Nevertheless, Detective Chief Inspector Humphrey urged students and faculty to avoid walking around the university alone at night or with headphones on and to keep valuables out of plain view. @amelia_parrott

G

etting rid of hazardous waste around the home may soon be easier for Lake Macquarie residents with Council receiving a $250,000 grant to establish a community recycling centre for household problem wastes. The Lake Macquarie facility, one of three to be built with grant money from the Environment Protection Authority,

will act as a state-wide pilot and operate from the existing Awaba Waste Management Facility. State Minister for Environment and Heritage, Robyn Parker, said the grant is presented to councils who have demonstrated the capacity to operate a community recycling centre. “This is the first round of grants delivered under the new $465.7 million initiative – Waste Less, Recycle More,” Ms Parker said. “It will enable council to manage up to 85 per cent of household problem

THERE IS NO EXCUSE! Skin cancer is deadly serious business GET YOUR SKIN CHECKED NOW!

The most important thing you may do for your health this winter is get your skin checked The sun-smart message is often neglected during the winter. Winter may prove to be the best time for a full skin check. As most people are covered up during the winter months, this minimises sun exposure to skin lesions and moles. This can allow for better dermoscopy viewing (a distinct magnifying light, which allows a doctor to closely examine spots on the skin). Remember to protect your skin this winter by applying 50+ sunscreen to exposed areas of skin. If you notice a spot on the skin that looks different from the others or is changing, bleeding or itchy, it should be examined by a doctor.

ohn Hunter Hospital’s junior doctors love Jessica Moore – and now she’s got a trophy to prove it. At the 2013 NSW Prevocational Medical Education Forum, the John Hunter Hospital and Royal Newcastle Centre Junior Medical Officer (JMO) Manager received one of the NSW Health Education and Training Institute’s (HETI) top honours, the JMO Manager of the Year Award. The award recognises the work of a JMO Manager who has made a substantial contribution to the education and support of junior doctors – including Junior Medical Officers and Resident Medical Officers. John Hunter’s Junior Medical Officers made sure that HETI understood how valuable Ms Moore is to their hospital, submitting a glowing testimonial detailing

her dedication to their support and education. “Jess takes her professional and pastoral support very seriously,” the testimony stated. “She is a credit to our organisation and has contributed significantly to the support, teaching and development of all our JMOs.” Ms Moore said she felt privileged to work with such talented young doctors and thanked her colleagues at John Hunter Hopsital. “I am very honoured to receive the award and feel that it’s easy to do a job well when you love it and the people you work with,” she said. Ms Moore is the third winner of the HETI JMO Manager of the Year award, and the second winner from HNE Health.

ascinators and clutches and gloves oh my! This can only mean one thing – Spring has sprung at Newcastle Jockey Club and Fashions on the Field is here again. The competition will take place on the first day of the two-day Spring Carnival, Ladies’ Day. According to Newcastle Jockey Club’s Darren Parmenter, the prize pool is one of the largest outside Sydney. “For little old Newcastle we’ve done quite well, Mr Parmenter told the Post. The top prize for the best dressed woman is a five-day trip to the Anantara Resort in the Maldives, courtesy of Merran Wiggins at TravelManagers and a Yellowglen prize pack. The best dressed man and the winner of the Millinery Award will both receive a $1,000 Westfield voucher and a Yellowglen prize pack. This year, an exciting new category has been introduced, Best Original Design.

“The purpose of this is two-fold, Mr Parmenter explained. “A lot women make their own designs, and there are TAFE students who also create. We’d like to see fashion students come along. The winner of this category will receive a $500 Westfield voucher and a Yellowglen prize pack. Mr Parmenter said that the judges, including headpiece designer Neil Grigg, who has done work for Princess Mary of Denmark, will be strict. Fashions on the Field will be held on Wednesday, September 18, with registrations beginning at 12 noon. The Post is giving away ten double passes to the first two days of the Spring Carnival. To enter, email your name and phone number, with ‘Races’ in the subject line, to editorial@newcastlepost.com.au by Friday, September 13. Winners will be notified.

new partnership between local jobs website, JobsInTheHunter. com.au, and the Post is delivering local jobs to local people. As its name suggests, JobsInTheHunter. com.au is a job search website, focused on the Hunter region, and features hundreds of vacant positions covering a range of industries across the Hunter, Newcastle and Lake Macquarie regions and offers free and premium job listings for employers and businesses. JobsInTheHunter.com.au CEO, Tim O’Brien, said the locally-focused website makes job searching easier and much less stressful. “You tend to get lost on those larger jobs boards,” he said. “The attraction for people who are actively looking for a job, or even for those who just want to keep an eye on the employment market, is that all of our jobs are local. “You’ll find jobs from apprentice or traineeships, right through to executive positions on our site and the niche is that it is local.” The Post’s Sales Manager, Paul Ellmers, said the fact that both parties have a local focus made the partnership a perfect match. “I am excited with the joint venture, as it fits with the Post’s mantra of being unashamedly local first, second and third,” Mr Ellmers said. Job seekers can find a selection of JobsInTheHunter.com.au listings under ‘Positions Vacant’ in the Post’s classifieds section each week. To view more than 350 additional local job listings, visit JobsInTheHunter.com.au.

s the outdoor codes wind up for the year, more people are turning to the game of Futsal, or five a side soccer, to get their

footy fix. It’s something the local Hunter Futsal Striker Club is ready for, with the prospect of a bumper 2013/2014 season the result of new centres joining the association and a 150-strong student contingent to represent the association at the AFA School Nationals in in October. “We look like increasing our numbers and providing even more competitions for those playing for fun as well as those

looking for representative honours this year,” General Manager George Poulos says. In a coup for the sport, Novocastrians and Broadmeadow Magic players Hankin Canli and Mathew Hoole have recently signed on to become ambassadors for the game. With over 40 teams having already joined, the competition is strong. Seniors and mixed players are still needed, and it’s not too late to sign up. Spring has sprung

Whole fruit beats juice

have heard some people say they the reason they don’t eat fruit is because of its high sugar content. While we should definitely be cutting out nutritionless sugar foods like soft drinks or processed junk, fruit should still be an essential feature of our diet. British, US and Singaporean researchers analysed data from three significant investigations that took place in the United States over a quarter of a century. The result? Eating whole fresh fruit, especially blueberries, grapes, apples and pears, is linked to a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes, but drinking fruit juice has the opposite effect. People who ate at least two servings each week of certain whole fruits, such as blueberries, grapes and apples, reduced their risk of Type 2 diabetes by as much as 23 per cent compared to those who ate less than one serving per month. “Our findings provide novel evidence suggesting certain fruits may be especially beneficial for lower diabetes risk,” said Qi Sun, an assistant professor of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health. On the other hand, those who consumed one or more servings of fruit juice each day increased their risk of developing the disease by as much as 21 per cent. Swapping three servings of juice per week for whole fruits resulted in a seven per cent reduction in risk. The paper, published by the British Medical Journal, speculates that even if the nutritional values of whole fruit and fruit juice are similar, the difference lies with the fact that one is semi-solid and the other a liquid. A lot of the beneficial parts of food do not make it through processing. Always try for fresh food.

W

ith spring comes flowers, baby animals, warm weather and the strong desire to get down to the beach and immerse yourself in the cool waves. I love this time of year – the sun is out and the air is warm but not quite hot enough to keep us indoors. It allows us to get around in the prettiest of dresses, basic t-shirts that have been locked away for the winter, the most stylish shorts, the newest trends in swimwear and whatever else you have in your wardrobe that will bare your skin to the world. Spring is the beginning of many things and for me, it is the beginning of my favourite fashion season. It is when we welcome new trends in swimwear; discovering what we will be wearing to the pool and beach for the next six months. Of course, with the changes in swimwear and beach fashions come a whole new range of beachwear accessories from hats and umbrellas to the coolest new beach toys and games. We get to see a new season of ‘spring carnival’ dresses in thousands of different prints, shapes, colours and styles, plus we welcome the new shoes and clutches to match. Accessories, like sunglasses and handbags change as well. The European spring/summer saw bright coloured, reflective shades worn by men and women overseas so there is a good chance we will be wearing them in the months ahead. Spring also means that we start wearing a whole different selection of colours and prints. Last year all the ladies were wearing beautiful florals in soft pinks, greens and purples. We will be seeing a lot of creams as well as some brighter pinks and oranges.

E

ach year in Australia, more than 100,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed (this is in addition to socalled non-melanoma skin cancer which accounts for about 440,000 extra cases) and more than 40,000 people every year will die from cancer. The number of cancer cases annually continues to grow; and by the age of 85, one in every two Australians will be directly affected by cancer. The good news is that while cancer is on the increase, death rates are actually falling (survival rates for common cancers have risen by about 30 per cent). More than half of all cancers can be successfully treated. However, not surprisingly, early diagnosis and treatment is critical. (Check out the Cancer Council Australia website for a list of early warning signs) Improved treatments for cancer have meant greatly improved health outcomes; but the greatest benefits will undoubtedly come from the introduction of more effective prevention strategies. So, a few simple lifestyle changes can make a huge difference to your health long term. For some helpful hints on how to quit smoking for good, ask for the Staying a Non-Smoker fact card from one of the 1500 Self Care Pharmacies around Australia – pharmacies providing the Pharmaceutical Society’s Self Care health information. omen for Women Australia was founded in 2012 with a passion to support women in the Hunter region The first Women for Women forum, held at Newcastle Town hall took just 12 weeks to put together and had more than 400 women attend. Everyone who came last year was thrilled by the experience and are looking forward to attending again this year. This event also supports the local tourism industry as stallholders and attendees travel from Sydney, the Central Coast, the North Coast and Queensland. Women for Women Australia also raises money for local charities – so far, they have

raised thousands of dollars in cash and products for women’s refuges and the Wesley Mission in Newcastle. The day will be hosted by some of our region’s most influential women teachers and therapists dedicated to inspire, motivate and empower you with workshops, stalls, therapy sessions, psychic mediums, African drumming and even free sample gift bags. An alternate election

A

t the time of writing, Australia will be going to the polls. Not knowing the result, I’ll instead present an alternative reality of the recent election campaign. Four weeks ago in this fictional word the issuing of the writs saw an alternative campaign begin with both leaders scrambling to debate one another. Each debate was the highest rating event on TV that night as people listened to alternative policy discussion – no threeword slogan to be heard, no Hi-Vis vest in sight. As the leaders presented their competing visions for the future, they both relied on thorough costings from the Parliamentary Budget Office, released weeks out from election date. Political journalists were so busy writing about policy they had no time to focus on who was wearing what or whose daughter was seen where. Everyone remembered that the ability to have children doesn’t make you a feminist and promptly ignored the candidates’ partners and children, instead focusing on what the candidate themselves would do for the country they want so desperately to lead. Across the country, a small army of volunteers stood on street corners, called homes and knocked on doors, always greeted with questions about the policies of the candidate they represented. Finally, the day arrived as every eligible voter had a spring in their step as they walked down to their local primary school, pausing only to buy a sausage from the P&C, and after voting each and every person stopped, looked off into the distance and remembered how lucky we are.

EDUCATION MATTERS

On ‘sandbox’ games

Dreaming of a holiday

S

peak to any 8 or 9-year-old and the chances are they have tried or are even obsessed with the game, Minecraft. Minecraft is what is described as a ‘sandbox’ game. In playing it, children can use blocks and build structures such as houses out of various materials and then interact with it. As a learning tool, ‘sandbox’ games are great. They allow children to explore Mathematics such as geometry and arithmetic as they develop structures in 3D and how they function. There are listings of materials and objects that develop English and writing skills as well as teaching basic Science and engineering. There are many ways a teacher can interact with Minecraft and other sandbox games to encourage learning. Even Drama, fine motor skills and social interaction can be encouraged. The problem is when children link up with other users and there is unsuitable language and content. Minecraft in particular is problematic as there are monsters and other creatures that can be scary or violent. Minecraft can cause depression and nightmares if a child becomes obsessed with it. Even safe sandbox games such as Eden can cause frustration and depression. Children will play with these games no matter what, so we need to encourage safe Internet usage and be very aware of what they are doing so that it is beneficial. Sandbox games are great, but their real impact is when we share in the play, rather than just using it as a babysitter.

hen I was much younger, we were lucky enough to holiday in Hamilton Island a number of times. It was and is a magical place. Hamilton Island is one of our favourite family holiday destinations, it is safe, relaxing, and has everything you need for fulfilled holiday. What more could you want – warm weather, coral reefs, bushwalks, kids club, baby-sitting services, family friendly restaurants and great accommodation. All just a short flight from Sydney. Hamilton Island has changed dramatically over the past 10 years. When we went as children, there were very few developments, the hillside was void of any public accommodation, only private houses were dotted around the Island. Now, the Island has transformed it completely, starting with the luxurious Qualia Accommodation, which was voted Conde Nast 2012 Best Resort in the world, yet the Island somehow still retains its beauty and relaxed atmosphere. The number of family activities now available across the Island is astounding. For all the mums out there, Hamilton Island also has childcare facilitates and a kids club called Clownfish Club, which caters for children aged 6 weeks to 14 years of age. The best part about the Clownfish Club is that fullyqualified childhood leaders operate it, which is rare and much more comforting. As you can imagine, bookings are essential so make sure you phone the club once you arrive on the Island if you need to use this service. As I sit at my desk this morning, I am dreaming about my next holiday. I think I’ve just convinced myself where to go.

Opportunity knocks

I

f you are older than Gen Y, you will have heard one of Winston Churchill’s most famous lines: ‘The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.’ I hear lots of pessimists speaking at the moment. These are business owners and managers bemoaning how tough ‘things’ are at present in business. Often these same people, when presented with an opportunity to grow or change their business, either fail to see the value in it or even worse, ignore it. What if you have a retail business and you were offered the opportunity to invest 4 days that would help you to improve the look and feel of your business, motivate your staff, improve your customer service, reduce your costs and as a result of all these, substantially improve your profits? Would this be of interest to you? Would you see it as an opportunity to help get your business back on track or improve your business?

Or, would you place it in the toohard basket, and continue as you’re going now? Well, the Retail Growth Program, which starts on September 30 at the Business Growth Centre, is such an opportunity. And there is a bonus: a government subsidy of $2,000 makes the program very affordable. According to Niccolo Machiavelli, ‘Entrepreneurs are simply those who understand that there is little difference between obstacle and opportunity and are able to turn both to their advantage.’ There is a entrepreneur in every business owner. The better ones see opportunity, the unfortunate ones see obstacles. Which one are you? To take advantage of the program, call 4942 3133 or visit www.mybgc.org. au. Be quick as registrations close on September 18. Until next time, remember, an opportunity is never lost; it’s only lost to you. Someone else will seize it... maybe it will be your competitors.

Terms explained

T

his week we continue to discuss key business finance terms to help you in your meetings with your business banker. Gearing. For lenders this is the level of debt a business carries compared to the level of the owners’ equity in the business. The higher the level of debt, the more vulnerable a business is to interest rate increases and the more dependent it is on the ongoing availability of debt to keep operating. Lenders prefer lower gearing, though in many small businesses there is little equity so gearing is often high. This is one reason why many lenders require security for small business loans but are more willing to lend unsecured to bigger businesses. Working capital is current assets less current liabilities. Current items generally require payment within the next 12 months. Lenders look for the amount of and changes in the level of working capital as a way of seeing how “liquid” a business is. That means how comfortably the business can meet

its current liabilities from the current assets it has on hand. Businesses need working capital, usually in the form of an overdraft. Debtors are people who owe you money. They occur when you sell goods or services and allow the purchaser to pay later. Debtors are an asset as they will eventually pay you cash. Creditors are people to whom you owe money. They are a liability as you will pay them cash. An ‘aged’ listing of debtors or creditors shows how much is owed and to whom. This means you can see the number of days your debtors or creditors have been outstanding. Most accounting software packages will produce these reports. Lenders look at Debtors/Creditors ageing to make sure businesses are not allowing long standing debts to accumulate and they are paying creditors in a timely way. Late payment of creditors can be a sign a business is having cash flow problems or could be creating a poor reputation.

ith the glaring omission of William Shatner notwithstanding (hey, they managed to give Leonard Nimoy a run), there is still plenty to write home about in this sequel to the franchise reboot. Picking up from the events of the first installment, when the crew of the Enterprise bested an evil alien, Eric Bana, Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and co. are called back home for some R and R. Before too long, they find a seemingly unstoppable force of terror that has reared its ugly head from inside their own organisation threatening the very fabric of the planet. With a ‘this time it’s personal attitude’, Kirk leads his team on a manhunt across the galaxy that culminates in one heck of an epic space battle. UK funnyman Simon Pegg steals the show as the excitable Scottish engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott.

t’s kind of hard to believe that, since releasing their incendiary statement of intent, ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not’, in 2006, the Arctic Monkeys have gone on to release four more albums – each one charting an evolution of a band not willing to be painted into one corner. Now residing stateside, it seems some of the LA living has rubbed off on the band as there is an overarching feeling of rock and roll swagger here rather than the short sharp bursts of angular stabby guitar that permeated their debut. While this isn’t the best work in their catalogue, AM could very well be the Arctic Monkey’s most consistent. Standouts include the lurching opener ‘Do I Wanna Know’ and the lead single ‘Why’d You Only Call me When You’re High’. Perhaps the biggest surprise here, though is the band’s choice to close the album with a tweaked cover of ‘I Wanna Be Yours’ by punk poet laureate John Cooper Clarke.

ith the equally outrageous Robin Williams and Nathan Lane in the lead roles, this remake of the French farce La Cage Aux Folles from director Mike Nichols (‘The Graduate’, ‘Catch 22’) could not have been cast better. Williams stars as Armand Goldman – owner of a popular drag nightclub in Miami. His long-time partner Albert

(Lane) is the club’s star attraction Starina. Their son, Val (Armand’s progeny from his one heterosexual dalliance) comes home to announce his engagement to the daughter of US senator and president of the committee of moral order, Kevin Keely (Gene Hackman). The senator and his wife descend on Armand and Albert to meet Val and his parents. Suffice to say much chaos and laugh-out-loud hilarity ensues. Hank Azaria also gives a hilarious performance.

HOT 2 WEEK SPECIALS! CARTON

S

ydney’s Metro Theatre will be transformed into an orgiastic den of iniquity and hedonistic debauchery when UK rapper Mickey Avalon hits our shores next month. The rapper’s legendary live shows are more party than rock show – leaving audiences in a heaving, sweaty and often drunken mess by the time he exits the stage. It was this spectacle the Aussie audiences were treated to on Avalon’s last visit and you should be in no doubt that Avalon is sure to deliver again. Avalon is currently riding high on the back of his latest slab of swagger – the EP ‘I Get Even’. The EP captures the energy of Avalon’s legendary live show and mixes it with the raw honesty and intense rhymes that have become a trademark of his unique sound. “My new EP is some of the best work I’ve ever done,” Avalon said. “Keep on rocking in the free world, and Avalonians unite.”

fter plying his axe-slinging skills for indie rock legends You Am I for the past 14 years, as well as his side project The Pictures and for the one-off supergroup The Wrights, Davey Lane has finally stepped out on his own with a new EP, ‘The Good Borne Of Bad Tymes’ and it’s an absolute cracker – although anyone expecting a kind of neo-You Am I may be a little disappointed. Lane, who is currently gearing up for a nine-date east coast tour in support of the new release, told TE that while the EP may have been a long time coming, it had been fermenting in his mind for some time. “I’d say the gestation period was around two years,” he said. “The problem was that I really didn’t know what I was writing for. I always had a feeling that I would put something out under my own name but I just wasn’t sure what form that would take. So, anyway, I started writing and I recorded around 15 songs that I thought scrubbed up okay and then I went through the whole ‘how the f*** am I going to put this out and then I spent about 18 months culling everything down which is a bloody long time, so it’s good to finally have it out there.” Lane said the fruits of his solo labours were more than enough for an album but he said the songs sat in two, quite distinct, styles and would lend

themselves better to separate EPs. “There was a lot of the more straightup guitar pop – you know, the jangly guitar stuff that people might expect from me and then there was the other, more synth-driven songs which are what forms the basis of this EP.” Case in point is the EP’s barnstorming single ‘You’re The Cops, I’m The Crime’ complete with thick hip-hop drums

and massive chorus as well as a remix from hip-hop producer of the moment M-Phazes. While you could be forgiven for thinking Lane was under pressure heading out on his own after so many years playing under the auspices of You Am I, he said the exact opposite was true. “Rather than feeling pressure, I felt

a great freedom recording the EP,” he said. “The thing about it was that no one really had any idea that I was doing anything on my own so there wasn’t really any weight of expectation placed on me. I guess I was able to fly under the radar.” Catch Davey Lane when he plays at the Great Northern Hotel on Friday, September 27.

f you have been thinking that Newcastle-based singer-songwriter Allon Silove has been a little quiet on the recording front of late, you may be right, but he certainly has a good excuse. Silove, who released his debut long player – the refreshingly eclectic roots/ fusion of ‘Small Steps’ in 2011, told TE that while he had been planning a follow up, it seemed as though the universe had other plans. “2011 went really well for me with the release of the album but 2012 rolled around and my wife and I tried to get pregnant a couple of times, unsuccessfully, through IVF,” he said. “Anyway, it finally worked, but my wife got really sick and I basically had to become her full-time carer. Thankfully, though everything worked out and we are now both really proud parents. This all happened right when I was starting production on the new album, so obviously things have been put on the backburner.” Silove, who aside from his solo output has made quite a name for himself in such bands as Chi and The Agents of Peace, said he was champing at the bit to get things back on track now that things have settled down on the home front, and plans to kick things off with a show at Lizotte’s that he said would be a much fuller realisation of his musical vision. “Much of my material is just me, my guitar and a stompbox but it was always my intention to have a much larger sound, so I’m bringing a massive band with me for the Lizotte’s show,” he said. “On drums, I have the amazing Canadian Thom Reid who has become kind of the go-to jazz drummer in Newcastle, my very good mate Ben Gain, who I’ve played more gigs with that I can remember, will be on electric guitar, David Javier, who brings a really refreshing Latin style, will be playing bass, Jason Tyler who was Zoe K’s right hand man will be playing keyboards and the wonderful Natasha Rusteroltz will be providing some vocals – it’s a very formidable line-up and they have got me very excited. “It’s also my first time fronting a band since high school basically so yes, I am sh**ing my self a little bit but it’s also very exciting.” Catch Allon when he plays at Lizotte’s, Lambton on Wednesday, September 18. Tickets are $10 and table bookings are essential. To book, call the venue on 9984 9933.

half of next year. The tour, dubbed the ‘Trilogy Concert’ will essentially be a chronicling of the Dragon story told in three parts – the young years (19731979), the glory years (1982-1998) and the phoenix years (2006-onward). “It’s all still very new to me but very exciting,” Williams said. “It’s going to be brilliant to be able to look at the evolution of Dragon in that way.” Catch Dragon when they bring their ‘Sunshine to Rain’ tour to Lizotte’s Lambton on Friday, September 27.

onsidering that when Dragon reformed in 2006, following the tragic death of their larger-than-life frontman Marc Hunter, they were largely an acoustic concern, it makes sense that their latest tour, which is due to hit Newcastle later this month, would feature more intimate and stripped-back renditions of the slew of tracks that placed the band well and truly in the pantheon of classic Aussie rock. The band’s frontman, Marc Williams, told TE that while the band reformed essentially without the aid of amps, the public soon disagreed – such is a testament to the enduring love Aussie audiences have for the band. “Yeah, it’s pretty funny actually because we did start out again as an acoustic band, but what we found was that we were forced to go electric again because the crowds were too loud – they were drowning us out.” Williams, who had quite a successful career in his own right said his inclusion into the Dragon lineup, of which he has been a part since 2005, had come as quite a surprise, albeit a pleasant one. “That was totally out of the blue,” he said. “Allan Mansfield, who played keyboards for Dragon, asked me to sing at a memorial for Marc Hunter - the

whole family was there and it was a massive event so that, in and of itself was a huge honour. “Anyway after the memorial, Todd [Hunter] rang me out of the blue and asked if I wanted to be in the band. I didn’t have to be asked twice.” After solidifying the new lineup of Hunter on bass, Williams on vocals, Bruce Reid on guitar and Pete Drummond on drums, the band wasted little time getting back into the swing of things, releasing the studio album Sunshine To Rain in 2006 and have since gone on to release three more EPs in ‘Happy I Am’, ‘It’s All Too Beautiful’ and ‘Chase The Sun’. Williams said that while he is

essentially the ‘new kid on the Dragon block’ as well as stepping into the shoes of the formidable Marc Hunter, he said the dynamic of the band is such that he has always been made to feel part of the Dragon family. “Because I came in at the beginning of the reformation, when all of the production was stripped back I haven’t really felt like an outsider,” he explained. “A lot of that comes down to Todd – he really is the gentleman of rock and roll. It’s an absolute pleasure be able to work with him.” And work they certainly do. After the ‘Sunshine to Rain’ tour wraps up, the band will undertake a massive 25-date tour that will see out much of the first

ith their debut self-titled long player going great guns, Sydney-based indie/world popsters Jinja Safari are about to hit the road on their largest tour yet. A 16-date behemoth, the ‘Bay of Fires’ tour will take the effervescent five-piece right around the country and keyboard player Cameron ‘Pepa’ Knight told TE the band were pulling out all the stops. “Yeah man, we’re really looking forward to it,” the affable Knight said. “It’s the biggest tour we’ve ever done so you guys can definitely expect 110 per cent effort. We’ve got some friends from Sydney who are amazing visual artists and they have created some projections for us which look fantastic. We’ll also be playing a bunch of songs off the new album, too so everything will feel really fresh.” Across their two EPs – ‘Jinja Safari’ and ‘Mermaids & Other Sirens’, Jinja Safari created an intoxicating and refreshing sound with a palpable world music influence – a sound that could be

likened to a uniquely Antipodean Vampire Weekend with gentle nods to the likes of Peter Gabriel and Sufjan Stevens. Knight said while the band had always been strongly influenced by world music, he felt a little like an outsider as he had never experienced the cultures that spawned his far-flung influences. So Knight and vocalist Marcus Azon jetted off to Northern India and Uganda (home to the town that inspired the band’s name) respectively and Knight said those musical journeys were the focus of influence on the record. “We’ve always been inspired by world music but, I guess, I felt a little bit silly playing afro pop without having actually seen those cultures first hand,” he said. “Marcus wrote all of the lyrics and a lot of the songs came from his travels in Uganda and while I was in India, I tried to hang out with the local musos as much as possible and just being able to sit down with these guys and get a feel for the rhythms and stuff, was just a phenomenal experience”. Catch Jinja Safari when they bring their ‘Bay of Fires’ tour to the Cambridge Hotel on Friday, September 20.

t’s pretty much a free kick that, no matter how surreptitious or sneaky, a 12-foot ninja would be pretty hard to ignore. It should come as no surprise, then, that Melbourne outfit Twelve Foot Ninja would name themselves thusly – especially is you have heard their debut long-playing slab of intricate prog rock heaviness, ‘Silent Machine’. Despite the album kicking around for a while now, it continues to do great business for Twelve Foot Ninja who are heading out on the road again, after selling out all capital city shows on their first headline tour earlier this year, to try and satiate their fans’ unquenchable thirst for all things Twelve Foot Ninja. “It’s just been awesome, we really couldn’t have asked for a better result,” guitarist Steve “Stevic” Mackay said of the album’s reception. “It’s been a really steady growth and it seems as though there may still be some life in the album yet, which is just great. Always a band willing to think outside the box, Twelve Foot Ninja came up with the novel idea of releasing each song individually with an accompanying comic that was inspired by the lyrics. “In the current music industry climate, albums are

a constant source of debate – are they worthwhile etc,” Mackay said “My philosophy is that you do need full lengths to survive the industry but to attract new fans I really think single songs are where it’s at. It’s all about holding the audience’s attention outside of the music and I’ve always loved the comic book genre and it all revolves around a novella I wrote with my partner all about the Twelve Foot Ninja so it fit in nicely.” This ‘outside-the-box’ attitude extends past their recorded work with the band recently breaking records with a crowdfunding campaign to fund their latest video for a yet-to-be-named song. The band managed a phenomenal $50,000 in pledges and Mackay said this could be due to some of the more unusual rewards on offer. “Yeah the video campaign was awesome $50,000 should allow us to make a pretty sick video,” he said. “Now we’re just in post production, putting some special effects on there and sprinkling some fairy dust on it to make it look even sicker. “But yeah, some of the rewards were pretty out there like, for example, one of the things I have to do on tour is wear a beret and paint people’s portraits while Rohan [Hayes, guitar] serenades them on the guitar – it’s going to be pretty special.” Catch Twelve Foot Ninja at the Small Ballroom on Thursday, September 19.

s someone who grew up in Newcastle’s western outskirts I can recall many childhood trips to the Wallsend Library, then situated on the corner of Cowper Street and Murnin Street, to pick up books for primary school projects or to hire out the latest literary adventure from Emily Eyefinger. As it happens, until this past weekend, that was the last time I had set foot in the building that now houses Heng Loong Restaurant. After many years of driving past Heng Loong and wondering how someone ever managed to magic a library into a restaurant, as I walked through the door for the first time on Friday night I was immediately taken aback by the high standard of the interior. The floating ceiling in the dining area is dotted with red lanterns and you feel as though you are dining under a Chinese pagoda – the lighting is soft and inviting. We are shown to our seat by the friendly wait staff and ordered up a few starters – prawn toast for me and spring rolls for my partner. The prawn toast, a personal

favourite of mine, was thick and crispy with a generous coating of nutty sesame seeds while the house-made spring rolls were crunchy on the outside and full of tasty piping hot veggies – bundles of yum and the perfect start to our feast. After our entrees, a steaming, sizzling plate of Mongolian lamb arrived on our table, drawing looks of ‘menu envy’ from diners at neighbouring tables. That was until the couple next to us decided on a plate of chicken satay which is served up flaming! It certainly seems as though restaurant owners Winnie and Eddie are bringing the theatre and spectacle back into dining. While my partner devoured his impossibly tender Mongolian lamb, I indulged in a very generous, sweet, sticky serve of rainbow beef, creatively served in an edible deep fried potato basket. We finished the night with a deep fried banana fritter, on the strong recommendation of our waitress (she was dead right!), and fresh and fragrant lychees served with ice cream, all topped off with a pot of traditional Chinese oolong tea. We leave Heng Loong with very full bellies and a new favourite Chinese restaurant. For delicious Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Malay cuisine, you couldn’t possibly go anywhere else.

ere’s one that’s sure to have hardcore kids, both young and old coming out of the woodwork. New York hardcore giants, Murphy’s Law, are heading our way as part of their first ever Australian tour. Murphy’s Law were formed in Queens, NYC in 1983 and quickly made a name for themselves in a scene that spawned such legendary outfits as Agnostic Front, the Cro Mags, Sheer Terror and Warzone. What set Murphy’s Law apart from this slew of iconic bands was their ability to ride a fine line between obnoxious skatepunk, rock and roll grooves and face melting metal. Also, while many of their contemporaries singing about society’s ills, these guys always maintained an upbeat party attitude. The band went even further with their musical explorations when they enlisted

John Fisher from Fishbone to produce their funk and ska-infused (at a time before skacore was even a thing) ‘The Best of Times’ album. Through countless line-up changes, the one constant in the band is frontman Jimmy Gestapo. Always the life of the party, Gestapo has a reputation for making sure every punter has a damn good time. At a recent gig in NYC, a wag at Spin.com reported that “someone brought a bucket of beers onstage which Jimmy Gestapo distributed to the front row, along with shots of Jaeger.” Game fanciers might also recognise Gestapo from the smash hit game Grand Theft Auto IV where he played the DJ of Liberty City Hardcore radio. Catch Murphy’s Law when they bring their brand of mayhem to the Cambridge Hotel on Sunday, September 22.

Get agents working for you

ome owners and buyers often fail to tap into the in-depth local knowledge, technology resources and experience that real estate agents have at their finger tips. The internet allows people to think they can do everything themselves and so they do not ask enough of their agents when looking to buy, sell or rent real estate, either as a home, office or industrial property. Our network spends a lot of time, energy and effort developing systems, technology and training and our agents use these tools to their advantage. The combination of agents’ skills and technology means we can help a buyer, seller, tenant or landlord to access information on suitable properties, or find the perfect match quickly and easily, yet so few vendors or purchasers ask agents if they use such systems before hiring their agent. When they do, the results speak for themselves. Our office recently sold a home just 16 minutes after it was listed using our buyer matching system. Another recorded 3,197 buyer views across 6 websites, generating over 150 people attending the open home within 30 minutes, resulting in multiple offers way over asking price.

As one of the largest, if not the largest investment in your life, buying and selling property can be fraught with many pitfalls, but using the right agent can make it quite enjoyable, and even possibly exciting. But the onus is on the members of the public, whether they are a buyer, seller, tenant or landlord. They need to contact the relevant agent in their area, be fully armed with a well informed wish list, outline what it is they are looking for, be realistic in their expectations and they will ultimately benefit from the relationship. Whatever your property needs are, search for an agent who combines systems and technology with traditional people skills and choose one that goes to great lengths to communicate frequently and unobtrusively with their clients. Investors should also consider agents for renting and leasing properties, whether they are commercial, industrial or residential. Our agents are well versed in property across all sectors, and they have a range of systems that support their property management portfolios. We disseminate regular updates by text or email, keep clients informed of the latest listings and vacancies and ensure control is placed in their hands at all times.

and Rover have announced the upgraded 2014 Discovery. The multi-award winning vehicle gets a new look, new badging, new V6 petrol engine, improved audio systems and a new range of driver assistance, comfort and safety features to broaden its appeal even further. The core attributes are carried over into the 2014 models, which will be available to order now with deliveries March 2014. “The hugely popular Discovery continues to move from strength to strength and the addition of the new 3.0 S/C petrol engine to the 2014 range underpins our commitment to delivering power with sustainability,” said Land Rover Global Brand Director, John Edwards. For 2014, Discovery has been given a new ‘face’ and numerous detail exterior changes. A new front grille, new front LAMBTON LAMBTON LAMBTON LAMBTON

bumper, new headlamp design, new daytime running lights with a distinctive LED signature, plus two new alloy wheel designs, further enhance the Discovery’s appearance. To give vehicles a heightened level of distinction, the optional ‘Black Design Pack’ remains available for 2014 models, with revised detailing, plus 19-inch and 20-inch black alloy wheels. In recognition of the Discovery’s established identity, the refreshed exterior design for 2014 also incorporates a change of identity for the vehicle in many markets. For the first time ever, the name ‘Discovery’ name replaces ‘Land Rover’ on the bonnet and the number 4 will be removed from the tailgate leaving just the word ‘Discovery.’ Engine badging moves from the tailgate to an ingot mounted on each of the front doors. communication technology. Used by approximately 150,000 people daily, trams form an essential component of Hiroshima’s public transportation system. The new safety system enables communication between trams and automobiles equipped with an autonomous sensor. The trial is aimed at verifying the system’s ability to prevent collisions and support smooth and safe driving. The system was developed and is being tested by the Hiroshima ITS Research Unit*2 with sponsorship from the Hiroshima ITS Public Road Test Consortium*3. There is renewed interest in trams globally as a form of eco-friendly public transport, and improving technology is also reducing the impact that private automobiles have on the environment. Mazda’s experiment advances collaborative research aimed at establishing a safe transportation system that makes the most of the advantages of both rail and vehicular transport.

azda Motor Corporation will begin testing its advanced safety vehicle, the Mazda6 ASV-5, on public roads from this month. The vehicle will be used to test a driving safety support system which utilises intelligent transport systems (ITS)*1 jointly developed by industrial, academic and government organisations. The car will also take part in the 20th ITS World Congress Tokyo 2013 in October and demonstrate a futuristic safety system that will see trams and automobiles communicating with each other on the streets of Hiroshima. The event features an exhibition of advanced safety technologies and sessions on a wide range of topics with participants and speakers coming from all over the world. There are also a number of showcase demonstrations, including one held in Hiroshima from October 20 to 21, showcasing the world’s first safety system that utilises tram-to-vehicle

Newcastle’s Under 14 Women’s team has qualified for the national Junior Club Championships

B

uckets of sweat, hundreds of hours of hard work and thousands of kilometres traversing the State have paid off for Newcastle’s Under 14 Women’s Hunters team, who have qualified for the Australian Junior Club Championships. The championships, to be held in Ballarat, Victoria, in the first week of October, will see the nation’s top 24 teams compete, and are considered to be a stepping stone in a career in basketball. The team qualified after winning the NSW

Country Championship in Wollongong in June. With the team travelling around NSW to play in championships, as well as in their usual Country Premier League competition, they are now seeking sponsorship for the Victoria trip. “The financial burden on the team is massive,” Coach Dan Palmer said. “The trip will cost around $17,000. We’ve managed to raise $10,000 ourselves so far.” To offer sponsorship or financial assistance, contact Dan Palmer at palmer. daniel@hotmail.com.

Hometown advantage

Hunter Sports High beat arch-rivals to take out the Bill Turner Trophy Amelia Parrott

H

unter Sports High made full use of their hometown advantage last week, defeating arch rivals Westfields Sports High 4- 2 in a penalty shootout at Jack McLaughlan Field in Edgeworth to take home the Bill Turner Trophy. After downing Harristown State High School 6-0 in the semi final on Tuesday, both sides were kept scoreless in regulation time in Wednesday’s tense Trophy final. Twenty minutes of “drop off” extra time produced no result and the teams were forced to enter a penalty shootout, where a couple of wayward attempts at goal from Westfields handed victory to Hunter for the second time in just three years. Hunter Sports High coach, Ashely Wilson, said it was hard to separate the two sides on the day. “It really came down to the wire,” she said. “Technically, both teams are quite evenly matched, but it was a battle of who wanted it more. In extra time when we only had eight girls out there, there was something in them that kept driving them to make the tackles they needed to make – they really stepped up and I’m extremely proud of the girls.” Hunter Sports High last took home the Bill Turner Trophy in 2011 after another tight final against Westfields Sports High.

Hunter Sports High dominated in last week’s Bill Turner Cup matches

Now in its thirty-fifth year, the Bill Turner Cup and Trophy brings together under 15s from more than 800 schools across Victoria,
