Stay safe to live Campaign in honour of Courtney aims to stop tragedies TRICIA MOROSIN
JOURNOS BANNED Relations between Hunter Sports Group (HSG) and the Newcastle Herald newspaper seem to have taken a turn for the worse, with the Knights and Jets administrator banning Herald journalists from attending media opportunities for both clubs. The shock move comes as HSG claims that there has been a “negative campaign driven by the newspaper.
I
t’s been more than a year since 14-year-old, Courtney Simon, died after the dinghy she was on capsized in Lake Macquarie during wild conditions. But for her Mother, Cathy, the pain is still raw. “It’s devastating, the Toronto mother said. “Courtney was so unique, she was full of life, happy and outgoing, loved to make people laugh. Recalling the events of June 2011 is extremely difficult, however Mrs Simon is telling Courtney’s story to raise awareness of the importance of wearing a life jacket. “I got a phone call from [Courtney’s boyfriend’s] step Dad, saying there had been an accident and the boat had capsized, Mrs Simon said. “He said, ‘but it’s OK, Courtney’s wearing a life jacket’. “The Police came around midnight and [by then Courtney’s boyfriend had] said she wasn’t wearing a life jacket, so I knew then that she was gone – I knew in my heart. Mrs Simon doesn’t want her daughter’s death to have been in vain, which is why she’s launched ‘Courtney’s Rule’, an awareness campaign with the motto of “stay safe to live – your life jacket is your seatbelt on the water. Why risk it? Wear it. “Accidents are called accidents because they’re unpredictable and by the time that accident happens, you’re in the water, you’re in a panic, the water’s cold, shock sets in, hypothermia sets in and your brain shuts down and you go to sleep – which is what happened to Courtney, Mrs Simon said. “[That’s why] in all small boats it should be mandatory for everyone to wear a life jacket. Funds raised by Mrs Simon have gone towards posters and stickers of ‘Courtney’s Rule’ which will be placed around Lake Macquarie. To fi nd out more, search Courtney’s Rule on Facebook.

Sexism maybe, but also plain stupidity
@newcastlepost
Newcastle Post louise.bourke@newcastlepost.com.au
I
t was just over a week ago that the Prime Minister unleashed on Opposition Leader, Tony Abbott, during question time, calling him a misogynist and an example of all that’s wrong with modern Australia when it comes to women’s roles. The speech made news around the world, where the consensus amongst commentators and in the blogosphere was of a strong performance and a win for Australian women. Back at home, I think many of us are less convinced. Tony Abbott has a history of saying some fairly silly, if not stupid things about women, many of which the PM highlighted. He’s also shown questionable judgement on many occasions,
again pointed out by Julia Gillard last Tuesday. But to be called a ‘misogynist’ – a term that means a systemic hater of all women, well, I think that shows an error of judgement by the Prime Minister. Let’s reserve that term for people who perpetrate violence against women, who verbally, physically and sexually attack women for no other reason than because they are female. Let’s not use it against men like Tony Abbott and also Peter Slipper for that matter, who are guilty of something else: sexism maybe, but also plain stupidity. As political commentator, Annabel Crabb, pointed out over the weekend, all we’ve really learnt about misogyny over the past week is that as a nation, we have difficulty spelling it.

Lord Mayor withdraws motion to hire campaign manager as policy advisor TRICIA MOROSIN
N
ewcastle City Council reconvened last week, and in a show of unprecedented collaboration, they amended two motions to enable a unanimous vote to stop the rollout of parking meters across Newcastle and expand free weekend parking. The two new Independent Councillors, Andrea Rufo and Allan Robinson, swung to the right and voted for a Liberal Deputy Mayor, Brad Luke, but then swung left to vote with Labor on the decision to rescind the previous Council’s resolution to proceed with gifting and leasing of Council owned childcare centres. Also during the Council meeting, Jeff McCloy withdrew his controversial Lord Mayoral Minute in relation to hiring his campaign manager and previous Port Stephens Councillor, Josh Hodges, as a policy advisor. His announcement that he would withdraw the motion was met with much applause throughout the Council chambers and one woman held up a sign saying “watching you. At the conclusion of the meeting, Labor Councillor, Jason Dunn, expressed his concerns on this issue, stating he “would’ve been embarrassed to be part of any Council that passed that motion and felt it wasn’t right that Mr Hodges has been set up in Council headquarters and is using Council resources without the appropriate protocols. In an interview at the conclusion of the meeting, the Lord Mayor suggested he would still be exploring the potential to hire Mr Hodges, who was by his side at the time.

Carers proud as punch The annual Walk of Pride for mental illness in Newcastle this weekend LOUISE BOURKE
P
roud family members and friends of people with mental illness will take to the streets this weekend to march in the annual Walk of Pride event, raising awareness of the role they play in caring for their loved ones.
Now in its eighth year, the walk brings together members of the community, including politicians, service providers, families and people living with a mental illness, as well as those who care for them, to highlight their often-forgotten needs. Families, friends and carers can experience significant emotional distress and suffer from the stigma around mental illness, said Jo Sinclair, Hunter Regional Manager of the Mental Health Carers
Association of Relatives and Friends of the Mentally Ill (ARAFMI). “The stories and lives of families of people with a mental illness have for too long gone unheard,” Ms Sinclair explained. “The Walk offers them a chance to share those stories and it’s time that their voices

Six-year-old won’t let cerebral palsy battle get her down TRICIA MOROSIN
S
wansea six-year-old Isabella Petersen isn’t your every day kindy student. She’s an avid public speaker, puts others fi rst, and handles adversity with maturity beyond her years. It just so happens that she does all of this while living with cerebral palsy and now she’s using these attributes to raise money for the cause. Last month Isabella came to her
Principal at Swansea Public School, Sandra Patterson, with the idea of raising money for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance centre in Valentine. “She came to me with the idea and I gave her some [options for fundraising] and said now go away and think about what you’d like to do,” Mrs Patterson said. “She chose a pajama day […] and it was one of the best responses we’ve ever had to a fundraiser.” According to Mrs Patterson, the children were totally committed to the cause, helping Isabella’s friends and
family raise an unprecedented $503. Isabella’s mother, Darlene Petersen, described her daughter as focused and said she had been particularly motivated by recent Paralympian gold medalist Maddi Elliott. “Isabella would just sit there and watch her and say ‘she’s like me and she’s amazing’,” Ms Petersen said. “She was like, that’s going to be me one day and I said ‘OK’.” Isabella was two and half when she
was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Her treatment now involves Botox injections and the plastering of her legs. Funds raised will go towards some fun posters in the kids’ plaster room, as well as new specialised play equipment for the treatment centre in Valentine, where she is looked after by the “amazing” Amanda Brignull. For more information on the Cerebral Palsy Alliance, visit www.cerebralpalsy. org.au.

Taking simple precautions
H
ave you ever been out and seen a very large cardboard box that formerly contained a high end electronic appliance such as a television sitting in someone’s front yard or driveway? I saw this myself yesterday afternoon while I was walking the dog. It was a box that previously had one of those new smart televisions in it. Quite an expensive item and a highly attractive proposition for a would be thief. The problem lies herein. When we get rid of the box, we see it as rubbish and of no value. A potential thief sees the box as an advertisement for a new item to steal. The criminal knows exactly what you have bought and where it is. Th is column relates back to the old topic I often go on about like a broken record – making ourselves less likely to be victims.
I agree that there are times that no matter what precautions we take, we can fi nd ourselves the victims of crime. But there is no need to advertise to criminals. In a perfect world you shouldn’t have to worry about where and how you dispose of the packaging, but let’s be realistic. There are predators out there that look for these things. The point of this is simple. If you have excess packaging, don’t put it out for the world to see. Break or cut it up into smaller pieces and dispose of it gradually if you fi ll your bin up. If you can’t dispose of it all at once, store the packaging inside where it can’t be seen. Doing this is a lot less of a chore than suffering the terrible feeling of your home being violated and the possessions you worked so hard for being stolen by thieves.

T
he Newcastle Crash Investigation Unit has been called in following a fatal accident last weekend. About 12.40pm on Saturday, police responded to reports of a crash on Main Road, Cliftleigh. Early inquiries indicate a red Kia Cerato, towing a trailer, was travelling north on Main Road when it left the roadway and hit a power pole. The 28-year-old male driver was
trapped in the vehicle for a short time, before being taken to John Hunter Hospital with minor injuries. A 70-year-old man sitting in the backseat was taken to Maitland Hospital by NSW Ambulance Paramedics where he later died. A crime scene was established by police and examined by the Newcastle Crash Investigation Unit. Anyone with information should contact police.

Bush fire season is here, but planning is the key to ensure locals remain safe
T
he events of the last couple of weeks have certainly signalled that bush fi re season is well and truly upon
us. We’re lucky in Lake Macquarie to live in such a naturally beautiful area, and with some forethought, preparation and a bit of technology, we will be able to enjoy it for many years to come. Council works very closely with the NSW Rural Fire Service and Fire & Rescue NSW to support them to assess potential emergency risks, educate the community on how to prepare for emergencies such as bush fi re, and of course, being there when an emergency happens. If you’re looking to build a property in the Lake Macquarie area, you will need to fi nd out if your land is in a bush fi re prone area. If it is, it could mean your home is required to be constructed to achieve a level of fi re safety. For residents who live next to bushland, it could mean that an area
around your property will need to be kept clear as a way of providing a ‘buffer’ between your house and the bush – these are called asset protection zones or APZs. For all residents it means you must have working smoke alarms installed in your house. Having a bush fi re survival plan is also highly recommended, and even simple tasks like keeping the lawns cut and clearing overhanging tree branches can help to save your home and possessions if threatened by a bush fi re. Where the technology comes in is that Lake Macquarie residents can sign up for free to receive SMS and email alerts for bush fi re and other emergencies – go to www.ewn.com. au/register. For more detailed information on preparing for bush fi res, go to www. lakemac.com.au/emergency-ready, or attend one of our community education sessions being held this month – details at www.lakemac.com. au.

NEWCASTLE MATTERS by Newcastle City Council Lord Mayor, Jeff McCloy
Events a drawcard for Newcastle
N
ewcastle can certainly be counted as a world class destination after winning the 2012 World Festival and Event City (cities under 500,000 population) Award presented by the World Festivals and Events Association (IFEA) at its 57th annual convention in Denver, Colorado. Th is is in recognition of the transformation of Newcastle over recent years to become Australia’s leading regional destination for events and festivals. The bid, which was prepared by the City of Newcastle and Destination NSW, featured events such as Fat as Butter music festival, Surfest, the Australian Rugby Union Test Match held in 2012, Australian National Beach Volleyball Championships, Australian Surf Rowers League Championships, New South Wales State Netball Championships, Civic Theatre’s Inspirations season, and exhibitions at Newcastle Museum and
Newcastle Art Gallery; to name just a few. Many of Newcastle’s major events and festivals are supported by the NSW Government through Destination NSW and are included in their ‘It’s On!’ event marketing campaign. Th is campaign has focused on Newcastle and the Hunter as a major regional events and festival destination. With a new emphasis on developing existing events and attracting new major events, Newcastle and the Hunter are reaping the benefits of an industry worth about $700 million to local economies. Is it any wonder Lonely Planet ranked our City in their top 10 worldwide. We have achieved what many cities aim for – a balance of live, work and play. Th is weekend why not go out and enjoy our great City – see one of the new exhibitions at the museum, relax on Darby or Beaumont Street with friends and a coffee, or just lay back and soak up the sun on one of the country’s best beaches.

Gifting relief: Happy result TRICIA MOROSIN
The Newcastle Post
L
ast week Newcastle City Council made the decision to rescind the previous Council’s controversial resolution to proceed with gifting and leasing of Council owned childcare centres. The two independent Councillors, Andrea Rufo and Allan Robinson, swung left to help Labor achieve the majority on the movement. “I’d been working with Councillor Andrea Rufo for some time [on the childcare motion], so I wasn’t surprised by his vote,” said Labor Councillor Nuatali Nelmes, who spearheaded the movement. “But I understand Councillor Robinson’s vote was a last minute decision.” Councillor Nelmes said the agreement to set up a working party for
the purpose of exploring both gifting and leasing in full, was evidence of the new Council’s value of community based childcare. Emily Hodges, Centre Manager for Maryland Care and Early Education Centre, which “was fi rst on the list to be gifted”, said the group was very pleased with the outcome. “We felt we were being forced down the gifting plan and felt ill-informed in terms of what a gifting agreement would actually mean,” said Mrs Hodges. Mrs Hodges said it had been a “very turbulent time” for the centre, especially as they would’ve had to come up with an estimated $80,000 to cover GST, Stamp Duty and rates, which they simply didn’t have. According to Mrs Hodges, the new motion’s option of a 30 year peppercorn lease seems to be best suited for the centre and would guarantee their continued operation.

Patricia Stewart was one of nine authors who contributed to the book. She said the book had been in the works for the past four years. “About four years ago we were going through the club records to fi nd a particular document and found they were in a bit of a mess,” she said. “We formed a history committee and thought a book would be the best way to collate all the information.” Mrs Stewart said the committee spent hours interviewing older past and present members to ensure stories from the beginning of the club’s history would not be lost forever. Copies of the book can be purchased via the sailing club.

any Australians travel to Bali each year to soak up the sunshine, but under the surface of the idyllic island destination lies hidden an ever-increasing problem. Families who can’t afford hospital bills are choosing to have their babies at home without medical assistance or in some cases, when they do have their babies in hospital, they are taken away from them until they can pay. While in Bali recently on a yoga retreat, Newcastle local, Karl Jaross, discovered the work of midwife, Robin Lim, who has established a free natural birthing clinic following the deaths of her best friend, midwife and sister during childbirth in the same year. “It was amazing, Robin took us through the natural birthing clinic that she’s created there, I was just absolutely blown away with the story of what’s happening to women over
there, Mr Jaross said. “In some cases, if they can’t afford to pay the hospital around $400 they just don’t give their babies back. “I was in tears when I saw the plight of some women over there; one lady just never saw her son again after having her baby in the hospital. Mr Jaross, through his work at Hot Power Yoga, is hoping to raise over $3,500 to go towards buying equipment for the birthing clinics. “The money will go to the running of the clinic, for Robin to dispense that money as she sees fit because she’s running the show there, he said. K
ids in the Hunter who want to play a team sport but are unable to because their parents can’t afford the fees, will soon be given a helping hand, thanks to the introduction of a new sports scholarship. The Sports, Health, Wellbeing and Education Scholarship is designed to help the region’s disadvantaged kids to take part in team activities and connect them with the wider community. Funding for the program is being provided by Pacific Link, an organisation which works with the Department of Community Housing and Housing NSW to fi nd homes for disadvantaged families.
“Our job is to fi nd homes for those in need and give them access to programs and services that help to break the chain of disadvantage, Pacific Link CEO, Keith Gavin explained. “Our new Sports, Health, Wellbeing and Education Scholarship program will help families meet the costs associated with children’s sporting activities to promote an interest in sport, physical fitness, healthy lifestyle choices and social integration. The announcement regarding the new scholarship comes in light of new research fi ndings from the Social Policy Research Centre and the Smith Family. The research shows that in some cases, children will choose to say they don’t want to play sport when they know their parents can not afford to pay for it, in order to protect their parents’ feelings.

Relations sour: HSG says Herald journalists are not welcome
F
elations between Hunter Sports Group (HSG) and the Newcastle Herald newspaper seem to have taken a turn for the worse, with the Knights and Jets administrator banning Herald journalists from attending media opportunities for both clubs. In a statement released via the Newcastle Jets website last Thursday, HSG claimed a story that ran in Thursday’s edition of the Herald claiming that a tax debt of $365,368 had not been met by the HSG, was false, further worsening the already frayed relations between the Herald and the HSG. “To publish this story without the facts is another example of the agenda driven by the Newcastle Herald against the HSG and their pessimistic view in general,” the statement read. “Th is new $365,386 debt was recently brought to the attention of the HSG as payable after the 2011 year-end audit of the Members Club and will be paid in the normal course of business. “The HSG has placed all aspects of this issue today in the hands of its legal advisers and further action is anticipated. “Because of this negative campaign driven by

A year later, a liquor licence was obtained and, subsequently, the Edgeworth Bowling Clubhouse officially opened its premises. The Edgeworth Women’s Bowling Club began in 1963. Fifty years on, and with many extensions and changes along the way, the Edgeworth Bowling Club still provides a great service to the community and sponsors a number of sporting associations. This week they will celebrate these 50 years and also officially change their trading name to Edgeworth Sport and Recreation Club, to reflect the diversity of the services they now provide.

Manager of the Edgeworth Bowling Club, Jodie Odd, explained the interesting manner in which the club grew. “On Saturday, June 15, 1963, the old Boolaroo Bowling Clubhouse was shifted to Edgeworth on the back of a truck, Edgeworth Bowling Club CELEBRATES 50 YEARS!

his weekend, Edgeworth Bowling Club will celebrate a remarkable 50 years of service, with something exciting for
all ages. Festivities will kick off on Friday night with a free Lady Gaga Tribute Show, ‘Born This Way’, for all members and their guests. On Saturday there will be a Mixed Bowls Gala, with a celebratory Dinner Dance in the night. To finish things off with a bang, the club is holding a ‘Back to Edgeworth’ Family Fun Day this Sunday. Organiser, Jodie Odd, said the club was proud of its achievement in reaching 50 years, especially considering the environment. “A lot of local clubs are struggling and either closing or amalgamating, Ms Odd said. “And yet, 50 years later, we’re still going strong and so I think that’s a milestone in itself. Ms Odd said she was overwhelmed by the community response to the festivities, with Lady Mayoress for Lake Macquarie, Jodie Harrision, and the Royal

NSW Bowls Association attending the Dinner Dance, when the club’s name will also officially change to Edgeworth Sport and Recreation Club. “[I think people want to take part] because we do a lot for the community and look after a lot of sporting clubs in the area,â€? Ms Odd said. “People should come out and just have some fun, while remembering the Edgeworth spirit.â€? 27, to raise funds for Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Club manager Michelle Lennon and the team raise funds for various charities throughout the year and in the past have supported Blue September, World’s Greatest Shave and Movember. Mrs Lennon said it was an easy decision to support Breast Cancer Awareness Day. “It’s just a good cause,” she said. “We have a couple of members who are going through cancer struggles of their own at the moment and doctors say they are more likely to pull through because they are physically fit.” She said the bootcamp was the best way the team could show their support for those who have been affected by breast cancer. Despite the event’s “bootcamp” title, members and non members of all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to don their pink workout wear and take part. “16-year-old members are taking part along with our older members who are in their early seventies,” Mrs Lennon said. “The workout can be modified on the day. “It’s up to members to decide how hard they go.” The bootcamp will kick off at 7.30am at Planet Fitness in Belmont. Participants are encouraged to RSVP to the event via the Planet Fitness Belmont Facebook page.

I suffer from acid reflux. Is there a natural alternative to taking antacids? A. For many Australians heartburn and acid reflux are a daily problem. A quick fi x is to pop an antacid – a remedy that takes care of symptoms but is not necessarily a good solution. It has been found that antacids, which work by reducing our stomach acid, can prevent the absorption of nutrients like B vitamins, magnesium and iron, and they can cause an overgrowth of bacteria, compromise the immune system and increase the risks for cancer. The role of stomach acid is to break down the dense food we eat into small molecules that are absorbed by the intestines and distributed throughout the body. If stomach acid levels aren’t high enough, food won’t be fully digested and its nutrients won’t be absorbed well. People who aren’t absorbing much of the nutrients from the food they eat due to low levels of stomach acid are likely to be suffering from malnutrition, even if they’re overweight. Th is can lead to a wide variety of conditions and diseases including anaemia, heart disease, cancer and osteoporosis. So taking medications
Q
that reduce stomach acid is not really the solution. The best way to avoid heartburn and prevent acid reflux is to support proper function of the lower oesophageal sphincter. Th is is the valve which forms a tight seal between the stomach and the oesophagus, so reflux can’t occur. Here are some practical ways to do this: • Drink more water. Dehydration can lead to acid reflux by causing the lower oesophageal sphincter to relax • Avoid medications that can weaken the lower oesophageal sphincter. Th is includes bronchodilators such as theophylline, albuterol and ephedrine, and NSAIDs such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen • Don’t overeat • Next time you feel the acid rising, try sucking on a lemon wedge or drinking two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar diluted in water right after a meal • Take a digestive enzyme supplement before eating. If your acid problem worsens after following these tips, there may be an ulcer or other inflammatory process going on that needs attention.

I
have mentioned it before but I am sure everyone has begun to notice that, as the weather is warming up, we are wearing less and less clothing. Th is is totally acceptable but only to a point – when people begin to wear underwear-like clothing when they are shopping and when men begin to walk around shirtless just because the weather is warm, it is time to stop. Last weekend I was driving to the local shops when I noticed a group of men walking on the footpath, topless. Th is would have been fi ne had they lived near the beach or if they were playing soccer on the front lawn but no, they were simply walking to the shops. With them were some girls who were in ‘knicker-shorts’ (yes, as the name describes, they do not leave much to the imagination) and tiny tops, which gave the impression that they had forgotten to put a shirt on that morning. Again, great for the beach or pool but when it comes to casual wear, not good. Th is was not the only time over the weekend that I had noticed people wearing next to nothing, for no particular reason and it made me wonder, when did it become
fashionable to bare too much skin? As far as I am concerned, it never did become fashionable so, next time you decide to leave the house with next to nothing on, here are my simple guidelines. DO - Wear whatever you like when you are near, beside or on the beach (providing that you are wearing something) - Wear next to nothing, if you choose, when you are playing sport on your property - Wear swimwear when hanging out by the pool - Wear whatever you like when gardening, mowing or working around the home DON’T - Go topless if you are a woman; I don’t think that I need to explain why - Wear swimwear or clothing that looks like underwear into stores or restaurants, even if you have just stepped out of the pool - Walk around wearing next-tonothing because you think you are hot or because you want to be noticed - Th ink it’s okay to lose the clothes just because the weather is warm, there are plenty of other ways to keep cool!

Caring for carers - it’s critically important
T
his year October 14-20 has been designated as Carers Week – a time to get to know more about unpaid family carers – who they are, what they do and how we can support them. People who are caring for others year round also need some help; and not just during Carers Week. If you, yourself, are a carer and spend a fair amount of your time helping someone else, then no doubt you will want to know if there are any support systems to help you. And there is help available. For instance, the Carers Association (1800 242 636 is the National Freecall) is a support service for people who are looking after others. Carers Associations exist in every state and territory of Australia. When you need a break from caring,
the Carer Respite Centres can help and fi nancial help for carers is also available through the Commonwealth Government’s Carer Payment and Carer Allowance. If you receive Carer Payment you can also get a Pensioner Concession Card that entitles you to low-cost medicines on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. And you may also be entitled to Rent Assistance. The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia has developed an electronic “fact card” titled Carer Support. It’s available from all those pharmacies – some 2000 nationwide – which provide the PSA’s Self Care health information. For the nearest location where you can access the card, phone the PSA on 1300 369 772 or visit www.psa.org.au and click on “Self Care” then “Find a Self Care Pharmacy”.

Witches and broomsticks
W
ith Halloween only weeks away, I’m planning on having a few of the kids’ friends around to celebrate the scary-magical holiday. To create a truly fun Halloween experience, I’m keen to fi nd the best ways to entertain the little ‘goblins and witches’ soon to arrive on our doorstep. As the saying goes, the way to make someone happy is through their stomach. Th is is very true for my two sweet toothed children. Why not get the family into the Halloween mood by baking up a batch of scary treats! From spider topped cupcakes to gravestone shaped biscuits, the kids love helping decorate tasty goodies in preparation for a party. Halloween crafts are a great way to spend time together with the kids. My daughter has decided she wants to be a witch. We recently had a lovely time together creating part of her costume. Instead of just buying a witch’s hat, we decided to make our own. We decorated a large piece of rolled up cardboard with sparkles and black cats. My son wants to dress up as a superhero. Next week we will make our
own mask and cape. Not only will you save money but your kids will have a blast creating their own costumes. The best way to get everyone into the spirit of Halloween is by playing a few games. ‘Dress the mummy’ is one of my favourites. In this game, the kids run around the parents with rolls of toilet paper. The kids will be in hysterics as the parents hop around in their newly mummified outfits! The most exciting activity I have up my sleeve is carving out pumpkins. From the timeless jack-o-lantern to more modern characters, this is a wonderful way to have fun with kids – and decorate the house too. Scoop out the innards and then start cutting out your design. Once you’re fi nished, pop a candle inside and set it on your doorstep. If you’re feeling adventurous, clean your pumpkin seeds and roast them in the oven. They are healthy and nutritious and make a great snack for the kids! Whether you’re planning your own party or will be simply handing out a treat or two, there are plenty of ways, both big and small to get the kids involved and enjoy the spirit of Halloween.

Tennille Southcombe, Junction Fair’s Marketing Manager, encouraged locals to stop by and enjoy the festivities, as the weather heats up. “[The ‘Frocktober @ The Junction’ event] is a great chance for you to escape the heat and pop in for a quick drink or bite to eat and browse the centre,” Ms Southcombe said. “Our Frocktober marquee will also have balloons all day to give to the kids and entertainment from 10am12pm for [children] of all ages.” According to Ms Southcombe, the centre has helped to make this year’s event even more exciting with a new special offer. Visitors who go into any Junction Fair retailer and spend $20 will receive a complimentary $10 Junction Fair gift card. A booth will be set up out the front of Coles for people to collect their gift card on the day. Ms Southcombe said the offering was a way to give back to the community. “We value the role we play within the local community,” Ms Southcombe said. “Frocktober allows us to be involved with a great event for families who are spending time together and enjoying what the Junction area has to offer. “The local community is a great support to our retailers at Junction Fair and we look forward to being involved with the community on many levels for the rest of 2012 and into 2013.”
Ms Southcombe said the majority of the centre’s retailers would also have their own one-day-only promotions. Gloria Jeans will give customers 20 per cent off all coffee beans, while Rose Garden will be offering 30 per cent off all new arrival handbags and bodyslimmers. Newcastle duo, Twinsanity will headline the festival, with an extensive setlist of both old and new school classics from the likes of Maroon 5, Stevie Wonder, The Eagles, MGMT, and many more. They will perform sets at 11am and 12pm on the corner of Union Street and Glebe Road. Those more interested in fashion are invited to come out to the Junction Village Car Park, where there will be a fashion parade every half an hour from 11.30am, featuring Rosie’s Closet, Carla Swimwear and more. Coles will also have their women’s summer clothing range on show at the Junction Fair marquee from 10am til 12.30pm. To coincide with Spring racing season, Cave Collections and Judith Franklin will have a stunning range of hats, fascinators and handbags on display and available for sale. The free festival will run from 10am – 4pm. Junction cafes will be open and serve special menus and tasting plates designed for the day. Visitors are encouraged to look out for road closures.

I
have been thinking a lot lately about sovereignty. It is a word which usually relates to the authority of Royalty or Government. But I think it can equally apply to individuals and businesses. I use the word to describe a sense of being in control of your situation. Th is is an important reason for many people to go into small business in the fi rst place, to be their own boss. But how many of us are really sovereign? When it comes to granting personal guarantees this looms as a large and dangerous issue. When you grant such a guarantee, you are giving up much of your sovereignty to another party, usually a bank or fi nance company. The idea is that if you default on your loan repayment, the holder of the guarantee can pursue your other personal assets to recover the amount owed. Th is can include your car, your home or other property in your name. So granting a personal guarantee means a business debt could put at risk your
personal assets. People say they have purchased their own home, yet if there is a mortgage over the property, they do not hold the title deeds. Have you ever asked for these back? Normally if you hold more than 50 per cent equity in a business deal, you have some authority (or sovereignty) to exercise your rights over business decisions. However, even if you have paid back 80 per cent of your mortgage, the fi nancial institution will not hand over the title deeds of your home until the full amount is repaid. The Federal Government has recently established the Personal Property Securities Register. You can search online to see whether anyone is holding any security over you or your business. Th is may be revealing as you may no longer be dealing with a company, but the guarantee you provided some time ago may remain in force and not have been formally removed. Details are at www.ppsr.gov.au.
M
obile banking is on the rise and set to continue to be taken up by more businesses. According to a recent study by global fi nancial services business intelligence company, RFi, more than one third of Australians use their mobile phone for banking. The study showed that 38 per cent performed at least one mobile banking task such as checking balances and transferring money, while 14 per cent have performed at least three different mobile banking tasks. More than half of the people surveyed (55 per cent) stated they owned a smartphone. Among those who used mobile banking, the most common reason to do so was to check balances and transactions (36 per cent) while 23 per cent used mobile banking to transfer money. Other main uses were to pay bills (21 per cent), fi nd an ATM (15 per cent) and fi nd a branch (12 per cent). Australians, perhaps surprisingly given their high adoption rates of smartphones, have not been as quick

to adopt mobile banking as people in some other parts of the world. A KPMG survey of 9600 people in 31 countries conducted earlier this year showed 36 per cent of Australians used mobile phones for banking. Th is compared with 52 per cent globally, 60 per cent in Asia and 30 per cent in both the US and UK. RFi says smartphone ownership is expected to grow by at least another 15 per cent while tablet ownership is set to nearly double within the next two years. Th is growth, along with improvements being made to phones and banking apps, means mobile banking will become more popular. Sometimes people want to go to a branch or speak to someone on the phone. But for busy business people, mobile banking offers another convenient, time and money saving service choice. Mobile banking is just as secure as Internet banking with funds covered by the same security features. Financial information which is accessed using your mobile phone is not stored on your mobile phone at any time.

ince directing the gritty biopic ‘Chopper’ in 2000, Aussie Andrew Dominik has been a little less than prolific with just one film, ‘The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford’ to his name. His latest, ‘Killing Them Softly’ is proof positive that you can’t rush quality. The story revolves around a pair of small time hoods (Scott McNairy and Ben Mendelsohn in a bravura performance) who rob up a Mafia-protected card game which essentially causes the local criminal economy to collapse. Enter brooding enforcer Jackie Cogan (Brad Pitt), who is hired to track down the overseer of the card game, Markie Trattman (Ray Liotta) and restore order. Why? Because someone has to pay, that’s why. Set amid the backdrop of the 2008 presidential elections and financial fiasco, one could argue that ‘Killing Them Softly’ is a rather ham-fisted allegory, but thanks to some masterful direction from Dominik and a brilliant ensemble cast – Pitt, Liotta, James Gandolfini, Richard Jenkins and Sam Shepard – it’s hardly an issue.
uzzed-up dream pop is the order of the day on ‘Melody’s Echo Chamber’ – the solo project of French chanteuse Melody Prochet (The Narcoleptic Dancers, My Bee’s Garden). Enlisting Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker to produce the album, the result is an enthralling mix of ‘so-Frenchy’ ‘60s pop melodies that recall Laetitia Sadier’s Stereolab and the swirling, lurching psychedelia that has made Tame Impala such a hot ticket item. The album’s strongest moments come when this juxtaposition is most evident, on tracks such as ‘I’ll Follow You’ which couples a sweetly meandering melody with more fuzz than you can poke a stick at. If the likes of Stereolab, The Cocteau Twins, coupled with the “wall of sound” shoegaze trippiness of bands like My Bloody Valentine are your bag, you’re going to love this.

ever one to have too many tickets on himself, director Ridley Scott claimed he was saving the sci-fi genre with ‘Prometheus’. Rather than deliver a revelatory opus, the man who brought us such classics as ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘Alien’ is at the helm of a lurching, clunky and at times confusing film. The story revolves around a team of scientists traveling through the universe on the spaceship Prometheus searching for alien life forms. The team soon become stranded in a hostile alien world where a struggle for not only their lives but the lives of all mankind hang in the balance. The film is still replete with the same jaw dropping cinematography and special effects that we’ve come to expect from Scott’s film, yet an overarching yet illexplained theme of man’s origins and our place in the universe, and poor character development really let this film down. Also, it’s association with the ‘Alien’ franchise is tenuous at best with any references to that universe feeling tacked on.

ell, too-rah-too-rye-aye – this is one tune you’re definitely going to want to hum forever – legendary British soul-pop outfit Dexys Midnight Runners are back with a new album and a special trip down under, to boot! Now known simply as Dexys, Kevin Rowland and co are back with a vengeance with one ripsnorter of a new album, ‘One Day I’m Going To Soar’ that should make for one pretty awesome live experience. “We’ll wear great clothes and make soulful music.” That was the promise Kevin Rowland made to the first line-up of Dexys Midnight Runners when he formed the group in 1978. The pledge held true through their audacious and powerful live performances, seven top 20 (including the number ones ‘Geno’ and ‘Come On Eileen’) and the landmark albums ‘Searching For The Young Soul Rebels’, ‘Too-Rye-Ay’ and ‘Don’t Stand Me Down’. In 1986, the life of Dexys Midnight Runners was done. For 27 years, millions of fans worldwide thought they’d never see the band play live again, let alone release new music. But lo and behold, the young soul rebels are back and you certainly don’t want to miss this.

t seems that the beardless are living on borrowed time. With Mayan, Incan, Egyptian and Internet soothsayers predicting a 2012 apocalypse, you can now add a much more chilling prophecy to the list – on December 21 this year, the world will end for people without beards – and you can thank Adelaide outfit, The Beards for bringing it to our attention. “Our guitarist was rifling through his neighbour’s garbage and he stumbled upon these ancient prophecies, which was quite convenient as we were looking for a theme for the tour,” bass player Nathaniel Beard told TE. “Although, the tour is more of a community service for the betterment of bearded people everywhere.” If there’s one thing The Beards love it’s beards, with all of their songs glorifying the facial adornment and you only have to glance at the title of their latest album ‘Having A Beard Is The New Not Having A Beard’ to get the idea. “For us personally, our new record is not only the best album we’ve ever done, it’s the best CD ever made,” Beard said. “That said, we only ever listen to songs about beards so we don’t really know what’s out there. “It’s a proven fact that everything sounds better with a beard.
“People with beards also have heightened senses and abilities such as the ability to run faster, so why would you not want a beard?” The current community service/tour will bring The Beards to Newcastle and Beard said he was pleased with the take-up of facial hair in the region. “Newcastle has always had a great beard scene, right from the get-go and there are also a lot of dormant beards in Newcastle just waiting to happen,” he said. “Although, no offence, but Newcastle is also home of the employment beard – the kind of beard just respectable enough to wear to work, and we want them in full effect. “There are some beards that are absolutely out of the question. The flavour saver, for example, is abhorrent, as is the moustache and those pencilthin Craig David jobs.” Catch The Beards when they play at the Bar on the Hill on October 24.

t may’ve been a long time between drinks – three years between their debut LP ‘Concrete Jungle’ and latest long player ‘Pocket Full of
Dreams’ – for Melbourne hip-hop duo Diafrix, but that’s not to say the pair have been resting on their laurels. “We have spent a bit of time touring overseas and quite a few months working on the album, so we have been keeping very busy. It’s also a very exciting time for us with the album out
now – we both just can’t wait to get out there and give people a taste of the new songs,” rapper and vocalist Momo told TE. The new album, a blistering collection of soaring hooks features an array of guests, from the likes of Daniel Merriwether to 360 as well as producers like Wax Motif and Styalz Fuego, and Momo said there was never a sense of too many cooks spoiling the musical broth. “There was a few of us who had worked together before so it was actually pretty chilled,” he said. “We were really fortunate with how everything came together – it all just seemed to happen naturally.”
And hip-hip is something that definitely comes naturally to Diafrix. Forming in 2003, the pair – Momo and MC Azmarino, who both came to Australia as refugees from the Comoros Islands and Eritrea respectively – met at a hip-hop workshop in Footscray and haven’t looked back since. The pair got both industry and punters’ tongues wagging with their debut album which earned the band the best homegrown new talent award in The Age newspaper. The album was a statement of intent for Diafrix with themes of giving a voice to the disenfranchised – something which Momo said continues on ‘Pocket Full of Dreams’. “Our music is really about universal struggles and our aim is to inspire people with our music – and we hope we can do that with the new album,” Momo said. Anyone who has seen Diafrix on stage will attest to the fact that they are just as joyous and uplifting live as they are on record and Momo assured Newcastle fans that they could expect something special when they hit town next weekend. “We give 100 per cent at all of our shows and it will be no different in Newcastle,” he said. “Newcastle fans always give a great vibe and I’m sure there’ll be plenty of hands in the air.” Catch Diafrix when they play at the Great Northern Hotel on Friday, October 26.

f it’s the sound of the big-bands that gets your feet tapping, then you can rejoice as the Ultra Swing Lounge will be swinging by the Civic Theatre for three shows this month. Newcastle’s own Daniel Stoddart and Steve Hudson and Tamworth-born Rob McDougall are all accomplished performers and will add their own charismatic touch to the classic big-band swing numbers. Since last taking to the Civic stage last year, the boys have been busy perfecting their craft with various theatrical pursuits. McDougall was recently awarded a three-week scholarship to study on Broadway and some of his performance numbers are the original scores learnt while in New York. Stoddart is the principal of his own successful drama school and Hudson is a specialist school teacher who also performs in a few local bands and duos around the Newcastle traps. The three boys will be accompanied by the Ultra Swing Big Band under the direction of musical director Greg Paterson. They will also be joined on stage by dancers Aric Yegudkin, Masha Belash, Csaba Szirmai and Newcastle’s

ince taking out the Youth Rockin’ The Black Dog band competition last year, Newcastle four piece Carousel haven’t looked back. It’s been quite a prolific 2012, thus far, with the band releasing one EP, ‘Lovers and Liars’, earlier this year as well as snaring a coveted slot at the Fat as Butter festival, playing alongside the
likes of Good Charlotte, Grinspoon and 360. “2012 has been incredible,” front man/ guitarist Cameron Hughes told TE. “We released our debut EP, which was pretty exciting, and we were also fortunate enough to play at Fat as Butter, after winning the Youth Rockin’ The Black Dog competition, which was just amazing.” Not ones to rest on their laurels, Hughes, Nick Shepherd (lead guitar) and brothers Sam (drums) and Liam (bass) Bonomini, are on the cusp of

ou’ve been there before, but not like this. Seen it before, but not like this. The Nickleback Show performs one heck of a 20-song set just like you’d get with the real deal – two sets of pure Nickleback. The band used the ‘Live At Sturgis’ DVD for inspiration, so prepare yourself for a dose of Nickleback that will leave you as enthralled as you would be experiencing Chad Kroeger and co.
Whether you love Nickleback for the catchy radio tunes or their more harder-edged stuff, this is one tribute show that has you covered. Catch the Nickleback show at Cardiff Panthers on Saturday, October 27. TE is offering five double passes to ‘The Nickleback Show’. releasing their second EP, ‘Stars In Your Eyes’. Hughes said while the driving and ‘tighter-than-a-tourniquet’ pop-rock of the first EP would still be evident, the boys have taken a much more considered approach on the sophomore release. “Lyrically, the new EP will be a lot different and the music itself will be a lot more mature,” he said. “I guess we wanted to experiment a bit more with our sound and what we were capable of.” For ‘Stars in Your Eyes’, Carousel enlisted the services of Newcastle muso/producer Gareth Hudson and his Hazy Cosmic Jive studio and Hughes said the multi award-winning producer brought a sense of cohesion to proceedings. “Gareth is a brilliant producer,” he said. “He was able to turn a bunch of good songs into a bunch of great songs. We had all the songs written before we went into the studio, but Gareth came in with little suggestions and tweaks that really made the songs work.” Anyone who has seen Carousel live will attest to the fact that this is one band that thrives on stage and Hughes said the band couldn’t wait to give punters a taste of their new crop of
tracks when they release the EP at the Cambridge. “We are a band that prides ourselves on really high-energy sets – we always give one hundred per cent on stage and we usually finish our sets dripping in sweat,” he said “We’re really looking forward to a big one at the Cambridge.” Carousel will be launching ‘Stars In Your Eyes’ at the Cambridge Hotel on Saturday, October 20.

ALL THE PLATTERS THAT MATTER

his weekend, take a musical trip to another time and another place at the Great Northern Hotel with the Reggae Got Soul DJs – Kid Mince, The Scorcher, Chuan along with special guest, Sydney’s boss DJ Mark Keith Brown. The lads will be spinning a quality selection of vintage reggae, soul, Motown, northern soul, R & B, mod, rock and roll, rocksteady and traditional ska – all on glorious vinyl 45s and 33s. Reggae Got Soul has become quite a popular fixture at The Great Northern’s Merchant Tiki Bar, and it’s not hard to see why. This is the sound of black America as it changed from blues via rock and roll into soul. These exciting sounds wafted across the Gulf of Mexico and over Cuba to Jamaica, where the people tuned in their wireless, and sound systems pumped them out at their dances, shaping Jamaican music as we know it. From ska in the early 1960s, through rocksteady and into the reggae chartbusters that topped the Jamaican and UK charts in 1970, Reggae Got Soul introduces a whole new audience to the idea that the old music can be as exciting as the new. Check out Reggae Got Soul at the Great Northern Hotel on Saturday, October 20.

ylie Jane is an enthusiastic, young entertainer who accompanies herself with an acoustic guitar. She is well known around Newcastle and the Hunter region for her powerful voice and ability to silence a crowd. Playing mostly modern music she is able to take any song and make it suit her as a performer from up-beat pop songs to the classic soothing melodies we are all familiar with. Kylie is originally from Dubbo, NSW and is a country girl at heart. She moved to Newcastle in early 2009 to attend Hunter School of Performing Arts. It was here she was appointed the lead vocalist for their stage band and hasn’t looked back since. She will be performing at the Mary Ellen on Wednesday, October 17.

onging for genuine Spanish tapas but can’t bear the thought of the long haul flight? You don’t have to fly to Barcelona to enjoy Spanish food by the sea. C Tapas Lounge at the Caves Beachside Hotel offers authentic Spanish flavours much closer to home. With the smell of paprika and saffron hanging in the air, courtesy of the weekly paella cook up on the bistro deck overlooking the waves of Caves Beach, my dining partner and I opt to sample the banquet in the hotel’s newly opened tapas lounge – a six course selection of some of the signature dishes from the menu. The dÊcor in the lounge is slick and sophisticated but inviting, with a relaxed beach house feel and just enough hints of shells and sand to
remind you of the nearby coastline without being too obvious. We are told that the chef’s philosophy was authentic Spanish cuisine with a fun twist. The banquet delivers this in spades – delicious, fresh, seasonal produce, creatively presented, course after course. We begin with grilled flatbread, served with house-smoked sweet tomato paste, garlic and basil. Next comes Spanish manchego cheese with quince paste served on crispy sourdough bread, wrapped in JamĂłn serrano ham, a perfect combination of sweet and salty flavours and textures and a real highlight of the meal. Hot dishes quickly follow, beginning with Portuguese chorizo served with braised leek, morcilla (a Spanish style blood sausage) and capsicum coulis, followed by seared kingfish loin and red witlof and crispy skinned pork belly with braised brussel sprouts. Dessert provides one final surprise, petit fours served on a towering three-tier cake stand. A delicious assortment of sweet tartlets and mini Baileys cheesecakes, made on site, with marshmallows, strawberries, warm chocolate dipping sauce and quirky “ninjabread menâ€?, gingerbread men shaped like ninjas‌ well, we were told the chef liked to have fun! C Tapas Lounge is open Thursday to Sunday from midday and Wednesday to Saturday from 6pm.

fter cutting his teeth in rock outfits Sparrows and Rushcutter, Melbourne singer-songwriter Tim Wheatley, decided to branch out on his own under the moniker of Crooked Saint, and he hasn’t looked back since. In the past 18 months, Crooked Saint has released two independent EPs, a double A-side, undertaken two lengthy Australian tours as well as two stints in California – the most recent including slots at the iconic Whiskey Au Go Go and Hotel Café and a residency at the House of Blues. So, has Wheatley had any time to scratch himself over the past 18 months? “It has been pretty busy of late, but that’s the way I like it,” he told TE. “I don’t think I’m really of sound mind because I really do start to go crazy if I’m not doing something – it’s kind of like ADD and ODC rolled into one and, when I’m bored, I can be quite painful to be around.” Wheatley, who cites the likes of 70’s West Coast heroes Jackson Browne and The Eagles as early influences, said while his stints Stateside may not have impacted on his distinct blues rock/ country sound, it did give him the inspiration to work harder at his craft. “Playing at the likes of The Whiskey and House Of Blues was just fantastic – both of those places had been on my gig bucket list for ages,” he said. “Also, I spent a bit of time in the Hotel Café as well – I actually got to see Paul Kelly play there to, like, thirty people which was pretty humbling. “Although I’d say my time there didn’t shape how I write my music it did shift me into another gear in terms of working
harder on the songs.” Crooked Saint’s latest effort, the double Aside ‘Hot and Heavy’ / ‘Outta Sight, Outta Mind’ represents another change in the life of Crooked Saint, with Wheatley bringing in more of a solid band line up for the sessions. “It wasn’t really that weird recording with the band because we had worked the songs up live a lot and, in fact, during those sessions I was hearing a lot of things for the first time and they really did fill me with a great deal of confidence in what I’m doing,” he said. It seems the next logical step for Wheatley to take the plunge and release a long player, but he said, while it’s something he can definitely foresee down the track, it’s something that shouldn’t be rushed. “There are plans to get a record happening but I’m not too keen to rush it,” he said. “It’s a really exciting prospect but also really daunting as a first album really is a first impression so it’s something to be taken pretty seriously.” Catch Crooked Saint at Lizotte’s Lambton with special guest Ashleigh Mannix on Wednesday, October 24.

fter a rather impressive turn at the recent Fat as Butter festival, Menengle’s favourite sons The Rubens have decided to add a Newcastle date to their seemingly ever expanding national tour. “Yeah we’re really looking forward to getting back to Newcastle – Fat As Butter was a great festival and we can’t wait to get back to Newcastle and go
one better,” frontman Sam Margin told TE. It was only a short 12 months ago that the three brothers Sam, Zaac and Elliot Margin, along with good mate Scott Baldwin uploaded their bedroom demo of ‘Lay it Down’ to the Triple J Unearthed website and Margin said none of them were prepared for the eventual storm the song would create. “We were all totally surprised,” he said. “None of us ever thought ‘Lay It Down’ would take off as much as it did – we always thought it would be [new

single] ‘My Gun’.” In a case of going from strength to strength, it wasn’t long before the Rubens were headed over to the States to record their ‘beyondtheir-years’ debut in New York with renowned producer David Khane (The Strokes, Lana Del Ray, Paul McCartney). “We chose David because he really is a brilliant pop producer,” Margin said. “We have always said that we love Triple J and everything that it stands for but we also really want to cross over into commercial radio so we felt we needed a producer that could manage a bigger sound out of us, and I think he achieved it.” It seems the Australian record buying public does too, with the album debuting at number three on the ARIA charts just under such acts as P!nk and The Killers. “We still can’t believe it,” he said. “The day before the charts were announced, our management said a top 10 spot would be great, so to hit the charts at number three was just
amazing.” Catch the Rubens when they play at the Cambridge Hotel on Saturday, October 27.

hen it comes to singers of torch songs, few do it better than the Grammy awardwinning singer-songwriter Melissa Manchester. While her name may not be household, her songs, such as her brilliantly emotive version of the Peter Allen and Carol Bayer Sager-penned ‘Don’t Cry out Loud’, ‘Whenever I Call You Friend’, and ‘Through The Eyes Of Love’, certainly are as Novocastrians are sure to find out when she hits Newcastle this month as part of her eight-date Australian tour. “I’m absolutely beside myself about coming to Australia, she told TE down the line from Los Angeles. “It’s actually really embarrassing that I’ve never been down there before – I just can’t wait. Manchester, who was already a published poet at age 15, said her career began after snagging a staff writing job at Chappel Music while concurrently performing as a solo singer-pianist in the clubs of Greenwich Village. It was while working in the New York jingle singing circuit, that she met Barry Manilow and her career really started to take shape. “I knew Barry quite well because we were both jingle singers, she said. “Anyway, Bette Midler was doing her show at the Continental Bath House in the Village and she was preparing for her first big concert at Carnegie Hall with Barry as her musical director. “I asked her if she’d considered using backup singers and she hadn’t, so she essentially created the Harlettes and I was Toots in the middle for six months which was an amazing time – she truly is a phenomenal performer.
Also, in her formative years, while studying at New York University, she was given invaluable guidance by yet another musical heavy hitter – Paul Simon. “Paul was teaching a songwriting masterclass at NYU which seems pretty unbelievable now, but that’s just what New York was like at the time, she said. “We’d come in every week with a new song, Paul did too, and he would deconstruct everything – it was an amazing experience. While Manchester made quite a name for herself in the adult contemporary torch song genre her Grammy award, which she won in 1982, came from an unlikely source – the ridiculously catchy disco hit ‘You Should Hear How She Talks About You’. “I really was known mostly as a ballad singer up to that point and when I was first presented with the song, I didn’t really know what to make of it, but it did basically become the number one song in workout rooms and gyms all across America, she laughed. “Now I sing it with absolute joy. Catch Melissa Manchester at Wests Lambton on Wednesday, October 31. You won’t regret it.

ll the signs are there that fi rst home buyers are springing into action, even though in most states they are facing reducing government assistance. As we predicted in our Property Market Outlook Mid Year Update, the second half of 2012 is shaping up to see increased buyer activity and it seems that prime market conditions are proving irresistible for the fi rst home buyer. Improved affordability with low interest rates and relatively low property prices is serving to offset any negative impact where government incentives have been reduced. First home buyers should keep in mind the following tips to maximise their chances of a successful outcome: When Looking for a Property • Set a price range and stick to it • Identify a suburb with properties within your price range • Consider geographical elements such as proximity to schools, transport and amenities • Take into account condition of the property • Before purchasing, arrange for building and pest inspections by suitably qualified professionals such as builders, surveyors or architects • Have the contract reviewed by a
conveyancer or solicitor • Take your time until you fi nd the right place for you – there’s no place like home and it should feel like it Saving for a Property – getting together a deposit is all about discipline • Put aside an ‘emergency fund’ • Take advantage of any government incentives such as the Federal Government’s First Home Saver Account scheme and Grants • Set a timeframe, complete with milestones, to keep you on track and you can monitor your progress. • Th is will also help lending institutions determine what you can afford to pay back in monthly repayments Securing Your Finance – do the research and understand all your options • Don’t get emotional. There’s always another property on the market • Consider established versus new, especially in terms of house and land packages • Factor in rates and maintenance costs as well as the mortgage • When looking at home loans, check the ongoing payments

ACADEMY MATTERS by Ken Clifford, CEO
“It was fantastic to get the three points on the board” t was a cracking atmosphere at Allianz Stadium on Saturday, mostly for Alessandro Del Piero’s debut, however it was the Jets that seemed to rise to the occasion while Sydney struggled to meet expectations? Yeah, I think we gave a much better performance than we did in the season opener against Adelaide – we were a lot stronger as well. Also, there was quite a lot of Newcastle fans who came down for the match, which was great to see. Gary Van Egmond decided to go with a back four for the game. Did you feel more at ease with that formation than last week’s back three? We worked on both formations during training and they both have their strengths but at the end of the day we went with four at the back which proved to be the right decision.
I
I thought Tiago (Calvano) played well so, from that aspect it was defi nitely the right move. There was an obvious improvement in quality from last week’s game. What were the main things you focused on in training during the week? Th is week was about being more direct and smarter with our play. We started poorly against Adelaide in round one so we really wanted to get off on the right foot in Sydney. Most of the pre-match talk centered on Del Piero vs Heskey, but the name on a lot of people’s lips post match was Craig Goodwin. How are you going to keep this young man’s feet on the ground? Honestly I don’t think it’s going to be a problem because Craig is an extremely grounded kid who works really hard both on the field and in training. He’s come in and basically forced Gary [Van Egmond] to play him because of some really strong
performances in the preseason. We’re all really pleased for him. Next week you’ll be facing the F3 derby against Central Coast. Are there still areas you feel the team can improve on going into the clash with last year’s premier’s plate winners? Central Coast are a very different team to Sydney – I think they are a much more disciplined side and a lot harder to break down. They also have got their season off to a great start and will be very tough to beat on the weekend. I’d say that it will be a case of upping our discipline. So, two games into the new season, how are you settling back into Newcastle after stints in Romania and Perth? Everything is going really well. It was fantastic to get the three points on the board on Saturday and I guess for me it’s just a case of continuing to work hard over the coming weeks.

Jets fire against Sydney Newcastle wins 3-2; focus turns to battle against Central Coast STEPHEN BISSET
A
ll of the mid-week hype was defi nitely lived up to at Allianz Stadium as the Newcastle Jets defeated Sydney FC 3-2 in a thrilling match on Saturday night. All eyes were on marquee signings Emile Heskey and Alessandro Del Piero and neither disappointed with both recording their fi rst A-League goals. The Jets started the game with a confidence that was missing in their season opener against Adelaide United, opening their account in the fi rst 10 minutes. Sydney’s troubles started when James Virgili found the end of a Heskey through ball before the Sky Blues managed to end the attack, putting the ball out for a corner. A well-weighted corner from Craig Goodwin was met in the box by Sydney back Trent McLenahan whose misdirected header fell to Ryan Griffiths who managed to fi nd the net, making it 1-0. Goodwin was involved in another goal opportunity just minutes later when he beat Sydney’s keeper Ivan Necevski with a powerful low shot that ricocheted off the post. Newcastle continued to dominate, with yet another Goodwin corner almost netting a goal for Heskey in the 15th minute, but it
was Sydney’s marquee striker Alessandro Del Piero who eventually brought Sydney back on equal terms. The former Italian international and Juventus star was fouled just outside of the box by Tiago in the 25th minute. Doing what he does best, Del Piero set the stadium alight with a brilliant free kick that dipped expertly over the wall and past keeper Ben Kennedy who was caught off his line. In a case of tit-for-tat, the Jets marquee signing Emile Heskey got his name on the scoresheet in the 41st minute after slamming home a cross from Ryan Griffiths to give the Jets a 2-0 lead going into the break. The Jets continued to dominate in the second half with both Griffiths and Ruben Zadkovich worrying Necevski before Goodwin, following on from a neat through-ball from Griffiths, chipped the Sydney keeper to make it 3-1. Sydney found a glimmer of hope in the 74th minute thanks to a Brett Emerton cross from the right wing that was found by an unmarked Blake Powell to make it 3-2. Sydney seemed to hit their stride in the fi nal 15 minutes, but it was a case of too little too late as the Jets
