Hanson slams petty party politics during her visit to Newcastle
Used syringes, sharps disposal containers and condoms are not what you would expect to find in your green waste bin, but that is exactly what Carrington resident Ella Lewis awoke to find in her bin on the morning of Wednesday, June 5. The bag sat atop debris in her green waste bin on the public footpath for a full six days before it was collected last week.

Pauline Hanson during her visit to Charlestown Square last week

F
ormer One Nation Party leader and NSW Senate candidate Pauline Hanson used her time in Newcastle to weigh into the current debate surrounding the so called “gender wars” between the Labor Party and the Coalition. During a visit to Charlestown Square last week, her first in a series
of planned state-wide visits leading up to the election in September, Ms Hanson said the personal attacks from both sides of politics needed to stop. But Ms Hanson, often the victim of jibes and taunts herself, disagreed with claims that Tony Abbott’s past comments have been misogynistic. “I think it’s being pedantic,” she said of Ms Gillard. “I think she’s just using it as a way to attack Tony Abbott.
“If you’re going to attack someone, attack them on their policies. “I don’t get personal, I stick with the facts and that’s what [the major parties] should be doing.” Ms Hanson said the sledging between Ms Gillard and Mr Abbott was a major concern being raised to her by voters. “People say to me, ‘The way they carry on in parliament, throwing back and forth with the personal criticisms’...I don’t like it and that’s
what the general feeling is from the populace. “People want to know what they are going to do for the country.” Ms Hanson also used her visit to outline platform issues, including supporting Mr Abbott in the abolition of the carbon tax and investigating the impacts of coal seam gas, claiming she would like to know the full impact on farmers before supporting further exploration. @amelia_parrott

hen thinking about what to write in today’s column, it dawned on me how often I have touched on Federal politics in these pages over recent months. Yes, we are a local community newspaper, and that’s what you’ll see reflected in every page, every week. But it seems that nary a week goes by without a polarising, embarrassing or cynical incident that draws our attention to the conduct of the 43rd Parliament of Australia. And, if you go to schools, sporting matches or businesses around town, it’s these events that everyone seems to be talking about. Would it be overstating it to say that the last week has been one of the most distasteful in Federal politics in living memory? I don’t think so. We saw the Prime Minister using a gathering of confected collective, Women for Gillard, which was strangely closed to the media, to stir up the so-called ‘gender wars’. The PM told the rally that Tony Abbott would bring the issue of Abortion back to the agenda if he were elected, in the process calling
into question the integrity of any man who deigns to wear a tie of the blue variety – which I’d suggest is every man in Australia. The rank cynicism of the whole enterprise, which included leaking the video footage and producing a transcript for the media, was all designed to cause the often hapless Opposition Leader to say something silly in response, which would flame the Government’s campaign against him and cost him the female vote. Then, there was menugate. A vile piece of literature, the infamous menu that referenced the PM’s anatomy was created if not for, then at the time of, a fundraiser by controversy-prone Liberal candidate for Fisher, Mal Brough. But if you believe the conspiracy theorists, the menu had in fact surfaced months ago before being produced from a top drawer somewhere to temper the lukewarm, if not hostile reaction to the PM’s words on Tuesday. Thursday afternoon brought us Howard Sattler-gate, when the Perth shock-jock asked the PM on air whether her long-term partner
and first bloke, Tim Mathieson, was gay. Because, we all wanted to know, right? No, we didn’t. As if it wasn’t bad enough that the PM’s private parts were the talk of the nation thanks to that menu, we were now discussing her sex life. Sattler was promptly suspended and later sacked by his embarrassed employers. And now, as I write this on Monday, it seems that Kevin Rudd is beating down the door to another tilt at the Prime Ministership in the last two sitting weeks of the Parliament before the election. When will it all end? Well, definitely by September 14. Maybe next week. If not before. Who knows. *** Turning to a similar battle of epic proportions, the excitement is growing for the second State of Origin match in QLD next week. I was pleased to hear of the NRL’s decision to crack down on fighting during games. If it’s not allowed on the streets, why is it allowed on the field? For those who say they’ll miss the biff, watch re-runs of past games. Go the Blues!

MP’s plunge to encourage local homeowners to register their pools Amelia Parrott
N
ewcastle MP Tim Owen made a splash last week, encouraging Newcastle residents to register their backyard swimming pool with the State Government’s online register. Under new legislation which came into effect in April, home owners are required to register their pool to ensure it complies with current safety standards. Minister for Local Government, Don Page, said the legislation came off the back of a coronial inquiry into the drowning deaths of nine children in backyard pools. “The coroner looked at the detail of all of those deaths and what he found was there was no register of pools in the state, so that was one of his recommendations,” he said. “We, on average, lose about seven children each year to drowning but equally importantly, we have about 60 hospital admissions about half of whom are seriously brain damaged through water emersions, so it’s not just the children who die, it’s the 30-odd kids a year who suffer permanent brain damage.” Mr Owen said he has already registered his pool and urged Newcastle residents to do the same. “In Newcastle in particular there hasn’t been a great response compared to across the State and it is important, particularly for the safety of children, that we get the message out there,” he said. It is free to register online or pools can

Menus, men in blue ties and leadership talk

ulia Gillard is wrong to continually play the gender card, and the latest play of that card last week was exceedingly desperate. Ms Gillard intimated that the election of Tony Abbott would make abortion “the political play thing of men who think they know better”. Even to an adoring crowd at a ‘Women for Gillard’ event, her most strident supporters would have cringed. Surely. Let’s not forget, single women have been

taken off parenting payments and put on the low paid Newstart allowance on Gillard’s watch. The Prime Minister was happy to pose for a selfie with the king of misogyny, Kyle Sandilands, who happened to be a guest at Kirribilli House. She’s also made a more recent decision to support a factional faceless man, David Feeney, for a safe Labor seat, endorsing him over two brilliant women even after calling for more women to enter politics. Julia Gillard often plays the gender card for pure political advantage, but this week, all on their own, the Liberal Party have shown there may be some truth to the accusations with “menu-gate”. How is it that someone, regardless of who it was, thought it okay to produce a menu offering ‘Julia Gillard Kentucky Fried Quail – small breasts, huge thighs and a big red box’ for a fundraiser? Under no circumstances is it okay to mock the Prime Minister’s private parts. It’s not funny. It’s appalling. It’s undignified. It’s sickening. It’s offensive to all women. It’s offensive to the Office of Prime Minister and it makes me sad about the state of politics in this country. Tony Abbott, to his credit, condemned it, saying, “I think that we should all be bigger and better than that”. But Mr Abbott was wrong to compare it to a joke made about him and his chief of staff. “Whether it’s a tacky, scatological menu out the front of a Liberal Party event;
whether it’s squalid jokes told at union conference dinners with ministers present – whatever it is I think we should be better than that,” he said. No, Mr Abbott. This time it wasn’t a joke from an uncouth comedian. Regardless of whether or not it was distributed, someone thought this insult was appropriate for a $1,000-a-head fundraiser. What is it about this Queensland seat? The current member is Peter Slipper, who also charmingly referred to a particular female organ as looking like “muscles
removed from their shells”. The quail joke is one of the worst things I’ve seen in politics for a while. As a woman, I am offended and unfortunately I don’t believe Mr Abbott has gone far enough. He had an opportunity to draw a line in the sand and as leader of the Liberal Party he should have apologised without qualification. After writing about some of the rare and more beautiful moments in parliament recently, last week we have truly seen the ugly underbelly.

Resident waits six days for the removal of syringes dumped in her bin Amelia Parrott

sed syringes, sharps disposal containers and condoms are not what you would expect to find in your green waste bin, but that is exactly what Carrington resident Ella Lewis awoke to find in her bin on the morning of Wednesday, June 5. The bag sat atop debris in her green waste bin on the public footpath for a full six days before it was collected by Ken O’Neill, manager of the Newcastle Community Health Harm Minimisation Program, on Tuesday last week. Miss Lewis called the response time “disgraceful”. “I don’t know whether it’s because I live in Carrington and it’s a low socio-economic area that they didn’t see us as a priority,” she said. “There are a lot of kids around in this area [and] I was just worried one of them might have found it.” Miss Lewis said she contacted Newcastle City Council, the police, and the NSW Needle Clean-up Hotline on the day she found the bag and felt she was being “fobbed off”. She believed there needed to be a more straightforward system of reporting and responding to discarded sharps. Mr O’Neill said he was only made aware of the complaint at 4:15pm on Friday, June 7 and responded on the next business day after the long weekend, as the service operates between 8am and 4pm.

Internationally-acclaimed dog portrait artist in town to paint pooches Amelia Parrott

e has painted portraits for the Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan, and reality stars Ice T and Coco. Not of them, but of their dogs. Graham Hoete, aka Mr G, is the only artist in the world specialising in aerosol art dog portraits and he will be bringing his unique art form to Newcastle next week when he takes up residency at Anipet in Redhead. Mr Hoete said what initially started as an interest in graffiti has quickly grown into a career in fine art. “As the leader of a youth group, I started seeing a lot of graffiti around and I really liked the colours and the letter form and how it was in your face and on the street, not in a secluded gallery or something,” he said. “I learnt the basics of can control and technique but my art teacher had told me I was a good drawer and could record things really well so I wanted to incorporate that into my graffiti.” After painting aerosol portraits of people, Mr Hoete moved on to dogs. “It’s one of those things where a lot of people ask me, ‘Why do you paint dogs?’ and I say, ‘Because dogs are bloody awesome..!” Mr Hoete’s portraits have attracted so much attention that he is now in talks with American reality television producer, Shawn Miles, about developing a TV show. Mr Hoete will be painting at Anipet in Redhead from June 24 to 30. @amelia_parrott

Celebrate historic Watt Street
W
att Street was the first street to be built after Newcastle was declared a city in 1859. But even before this, it was a crucial part of daily life, with humble beginnings as a path that led from the first boat-loading wharf near the still standing Customs House to a small coal pit near the top of the hill. Our mining and sea-faring roots started
here in a penal settlement and from 1804 for nearly 20 years this was life in our city. By 1870, the queue of ships waiting to enter the port and load had grown so much, there was a 3-month wait to load. Today, the figure stands at around 115 million tonnes. A free celebration of Watt Street’s history is on this Friday from 5pm10pm. Visit www.cityevolutions.com.

Have your say on the direction of the city’s footpaths
ootpaths play a vital role within Lake Macquarie. They provide a means of access within our community to schools, town centres, and other facilities and services. Footpaths also provide a means to greater health and wellbeing through exercise and reduced car usage. We understand that footpaths are an important community asset to our residents and this is reflected in our most recent Customer Satisfaction Survey. Footpaths were one of six areas identified for improvement under Transport, Roads & Drainage. As a result, Council has developed an action plan, mapping out key footpath locations and anticipated delivery timeframes to improve this area of service delivery in future years. Lake Macquarie has about 410 kilometres of footpaths. This will increase under Council’s Draft Footpath Strategy by about 16 kilometres over the next decade. This is in addition to the construction of new cycleways and footpaths built with new developments.
The Draft Footpath Strategy 20132023 is a plan to ensure Council spreads the approved amount of new pedestrian facilities to areas in which they will achieve the greatest benefit to the community. It outlines the infrastructure needed to enable safe and convenient pedestrian travel over the next 10 years. The strategy considers how close a footpath is to commercial areas, schools and aged-care and community buildings, as well as factors such as links to public transport routes, safety and disabled access, and potential development opportunities. Community input is essential for us to understand your priorities and concerns on where footpaths should be installed. The feedback received from the community at the information stalls held across the city last week will be used to refine the strategy. You can submit your feedback to Council by Friday, June 28, and help us ensure better connectivity throughout the city by improving our network of paths, roads and walking trails.

Hunter New England Health is advising people to take simple precautions
H
The Newcastle Post Wednesday, June 19, 2013
unter New England Health is reminding the community of some simple hygiene precautions people can take to avoid contracting the gastroenteritis strain currently doing the rounds. Hunter New England Health Public Health Doctor, Dr Kate Hardie, said winter is the peak season for gastro in the community. “Outbreaks can occur throughout the year but cases tend to rise during winter and early spring,” Dr Hardie explained. “We have already seen a number of outbreaks of norovirus gastroenteritis this season, particularly affecting aged care institutions and child care settings.” Dr Hardie said there are two things people can do to reduce the spread of gastro: take care with hand washing and stay home while they recover. “The best way to avoid viral gastroenteritis is by washing your hands thoroughly with soap and running water before handling and eating food. “It is also important to always wash your hands after using the toilet,” she said. “Alcohol-based hand gel is an effective alternative if soap and water are not readily available.” The elderly are particularly vulnerable to dehydration from a bout of gastro, so it iswith Hunter New England Health advising people not to visit people in hospitals or in aged care facilities if you suspect you have gastro. “Outbreaks in these environments can more readily occur with devastating consequences,” Dr Hardie explained. “This is why sometimes a local aged care facility or hospital will ask family members to delay visiting if an outbreak occurs so that the spread of the virus can be contained,” she said. Child-care centres and schools are also susceptible to outbreaks and babies are another vulnerable group, with warnings coming from schools and centres for parents to keep unwell children at home until they recover. “It’s important to remember that babies can become dehydrated very quickly with gastro,” Dr Hardie said. “Any baby less than six months old who has gastro should be taken to your GP or local emergency department immediately.” Gastro is a common illness which is caused by a number of different bugs. Viral gastroenteritis due to norovirus and rotavirus is more common in winter and early spring, but bacteria and food poisoning can also cause be responsible for causing gastro. “Some of these viruses, particularly norovirus, are highly infectious and can be spread very easily from person to person. They can also be spread through indirect contact with contaminated surfaces,” Dr Hardie said. Symptoms of viral gastro usually last between one and three days, but sometimes longer, and can include vomiting, diarrhoea, fever and loss of appetite can make a person lose more fluid than they can keep down. This may lead to dehydration, which needs to be treated immediately. Signs of dehydration include passing less urine than usual, increased thirst and dry mouth, sunken eyes, tiredness, and irritability. If dehydration cannot be rapidly corrected by increasing fluid intake, Dr Hardie advises that medical care should be sought. For more information on preventing gastroenteritis as well as tips for staying healthy this winter, visit the NSW Ministry of Health website at www.health.nsw.gov. au/Pages/default.aspx.

Bonfils Rugaruza with Sister Diana Santleben of Penola House
Plea: Help reunite families Melissah Comber
S
ister Diana Santleben, secretary of Mayfield’s Penola House, is pleading for donations from the public to help bring ten orphans to Newcastle from Africa. “It is a simple story of kids that need [help]” she said. “Each of these children has been orphaned by war and they all have family already in Newcastle. “We are trying to reunite them.” So far Penola House has paid for the medical tests and the visa applications, and now need to pay for the flights for
Fabiola (17), David (15) and Patrick (13), who have been granted visas. 13-year-old Bonfils Rugaruza, who emigrated with his family from the Congo and is a cousin to Fabiola, David and Patrick, said that Africa is not safe for them. “In Newcastle there is hope and an end to fear. [In Africa they] face daily danger without the protection of any adult.” Sister Diana said that they have received many donations, but estimates that they will need another $2,000 to bring the three children over. “I am determined that these kids are going to get their chance.” Donations can be taken to Penola House, 3 Wilson Street, Mayfield West.

Sergeant Robyn McEnearney is currently serving in the Middle East
In action: Medic comes a long way to serve overseas
R
obyn McEnearney has travelled a long road from her days as an enrolled nurse at Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital. The sergeant and medic, who is in the 1st Expeditionary Health Squadron with the Royal Australian Air Force, is currently posted to the Middle East as part of Operation Slipper and a member of Combat Support Unit 9. The former St Franics Xavier College Hamilton student is working in the Medical Health Facility at Al Minhad Air Base in Dubai. “We provide emergency and outpatient clinical care to Australian and Coalition Forces based at Al Minhad,” she explained. However, Sergeant McEnearney has in
the past been required at the front line. “We [have been] called to do an aeromedical evacuation in country to bring back an injured member to Al Minhad Air Base for specialist care,” she said. Not immune to being homesick, Sergeant McEnearney said she is looking forward to returning home to her family. It is Sergeant McEnearney’s second deployment to Operation Slipper having previously been deployed in 2008/09. She was also deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Catalyst and in 2011 she was part of Operation Yasi Assist following the North Queensland cyclone. She has been recognised for her work by being awarded four medals, including one from NATO.

John Hunter Hospital G1 ward staff get into the spirit of Bowel Cancer Month
Apple a day: Hospital staff promote bowel health Melissah Comber
I
n the John Hunter Hospital’s G1 ward, an apple a day won’t keep the doctor away, but it will raise much needed funds for Bowel Cancer Australia with the staff participating in the ‘Apple a Day Challenge’ to encourage people to be aware of their colorectal health. The G1 ward looks after patients who have had bowel or colorectal surgery. Bowel Cancer Australia Chief Executive
Julien Wiggins said that the challenge is all about a healthy message this Bowel Cancer Awareness Month. “70 per cent of bowel cancers are influenced by diet and lifestyle,” Ms Wiggins explained. “Apples are high in fibre, which we know is great for bowel health.” Staff of G1 are hoping to also improve their own health by eating apples provided by Carrington Fruit Factory, and are promoting the cause through dressing up. They are also selling pins to raise money and will hold an apple-themed bake sale. @melcomber

Members of the Hunter School of Performing Arts’ Senior Concert Band
Melissah Comber
T
he students at the Hunter School of Performing Arts are making sweet music – and they have the awards to prove it. The school brought home 11 medals from the National Eisteddfod, held in Canberra on the last weekend of last month, including seven gold. Deputy Principal Marcus Neale said that it was a wonderful acknowledgement of the calibre of the music program. “To be recognised on the national stage is a magnificent achievement for all our young musicians and dedicated staff.
In addition to the medals received by the senior and junior concert bands, the string orchestra and the stage band, the school also received three platinum awards, which are awarded by the adjudicator to any band across any category for excellence. Junior Concert Band Director, Kylie Gardner, said that although winning was exciting, watching the students support each other was a highlight of the trip. “It’s a real community feel with staff and kids, she said.“We saw older kids helping out younger kids with things like tuning, and generally supporting each other. One hundred and fifty students from Years 5-12 travelled to the four-day event. @melcomber

THERE IS NO EXCUSE! Skin cancer is deadly serious business GET YOUR SKIN CHECKED NOW!
The most important thing you may do for your health this winter is get your skin checked The sun-smart message is often neglected during the winter. Winter may prove to be the best time for a full skin check. As most people are covered up during the winter months, this minimises sun exposure to skin lesions and moles. This can allow for better dermoscopy viewing (a distinct magnifying light, which allows a doctor to closely examine spots on the skin). Remember to protect your skin this winter by applying 50+ sunscreen to exposed areas of skin. If you notice a spot on the skin that looks different from the others or is changing, bleeding or itchy, it should be examined by a doctor.

Return to centre: Retreat will help you rediscover peace
T
hese days it seems most people suffer from stress, as we attempt to balance a busy career, family commitments and personal lives, often to the detriment of our health. A mother of two young children, local yoga and meditation teacher, Lisa Pollard, is no stranger to stress, but has found relief in a concept that is becoming increasingly common – mindfulness. “Mindfulness is about paying attention in a very direct way, to the present moment, in a non-judgmental way,” Ms Pollard, who has been teaching mindfulness techniques in Newcastle for seven years, said. “Often we’re caught in our heads and very busy, we don’t pay attention to our bodies, so [mindfulness] is taking the awareness from rumination and coming back down into our bodies.” Ms Pollard has been teaching Yoga for over 22 years. She currently teaches drop-in classes at Wickham, called ‘Moving Into Stillness’ and runs 8-week, Mindfulness-based stress reduction courses, also offering these courses privately for students, adults and couples. This weekend Ms Pollard will be facilitating a new two-day retreat called ‘Return to Centre’ at Universal T.K.D Academy in Wickham. The weekend offers participants the opportunity to come home to the
Yoga and meditation teacher, Lisa Pollard. Photo: Elaine Bull
body, mind and heart through the gentle practices of restorative yoga, fluid sequencing, walking meditation, guided seated meditation, body scans and silence. Ms Pollard said the weekend is open to anyone seeking a retreat from the push of daily life, regardless of experience. “I’m looking forward to sharing my teachings in this convergence of mindfulness and yoga practice.” For more information or to book, phone Lisa on 0403 186 146 or visit her website at www.lisapollard.com

STAYING HEALTHY
FASHION FIXATION
by Elisha Stein
S
Nurture your social connections
ocial connections and positive relationships are strongly linked to our mental health and wellbeing. Throughout our lives, our relationships with others change, but they remain important. Being around people gives us the opportunity to share our experiences and to learn about the experience of others. Good relationships with family and friends help us to have fun and enjoy life, while other people can help us out with practical tasks and support us to reach our goals. We can grow at any stage of life – we just need to be open to new experiences. Building our knowledge and skills at a task we really enjoy can boost self-esteem, give us opportunities for social interaction, and improve our overall wellbeing. When setting new challenges or taking on new activities, choose things that are meaningful for you and fit with your interests and values. Be flexible. Try and think about your new goals in terms of things you want to add to your life, instead of in terms of things you are trying to avoid. Sites such as www.mentalhealth.asn.au can be helpful and give helpful tips. Some ways to connect: • Offer to help – volunteer for an organisation you believe in or just help your friends move house. • Combine doing something for your physical health with a social activity to improve your mental health. For example, join a walking group. • Make spending quality time with people close to you a priority and keep up to date with what is happening in their lives. Try to be a good listener and let others share their stories without interrupting.

ashion is often about hiding our lumps and bumps, and wearing what we can to make us look slimmer and healthier. However, there is an exception. Maternity wear has always been about wearing long, unflattering (but comfortable) ‘muu-muus’, but things seem to have changed in recent years. Women are flaunting their baby bumps in the hottest, on-trend maternity wear out, and it seems as though designers are putting more of an emphasis on trendy maternity wear. Perhaps they have realised that pregnant women still like to look great in the latest fashions, but I think that a lot of the attention on maternity wear has come from a number of famous pregnant women. Take the Duchess of Cambridge for instance; Kate Middleton is a beautiful style icon who is not shy about her pregnancy. Kate always looks on-trend and beautifully classy in her long coats and fitted dresses. The key to the classy look is to buy maternity wear that fits, that isn’t too tight and is modest. A winter coat over a mid-length dress, worn with stockings and some carefully chosen accessories, will give you the perfect classy, on-trend look this winter. You don’t have to lose your personal style just because your body has changed – in fact, you will find that many of the stores that you already shop at will have a good maternity range. There are also great boutique maternity shops with fashionable ranges and you can always shop online.

Continence – let’s talk about it
I
ncontinence is the term given to the loss of voluntary control over bladder or bowel function; and it’s one of the biggest health issues in the Australian community, affecting nearly four million people. It may not be life threatening, but incontinence can significantly affect quality of life and is sometimes a sign of more serious health problems. Signs of poor or weak bladder and loss of urine control include: frequency – wanting to go to the toilet frequently; nocturia – waking up to go to the toilet more than twice at night; urgency – sudden urges to go to the toilet; and the involuntary or unintentional loss of urine from the bladder – that is wetting pants or wetting the bed. Poor bladder and urine control can happen to anyone at any age. Factors which increase risk are menopause, pregnancy, childbirth, having borne children, being overweight, and urinary tract infections. Unfortunately, less than 40 per cent of people with incontinence ever seek professional help. Perhaps because they’re too embarrassed or too busy; or maybe they think nothing can be done; that it’s just a side effect of getting older or having children. Pharmacists throughout Australia, who provide the Pharmaceutical Society’s Self Care health information, are promoting continence management. There are fact cards on Bladder and Urine Control, Pelvic Floor Exercises, Prostate Problems and Urinary Tract Infection; all with self-help hints and great advice on how to best manage continence problems, whatever the cause.

Be pedantic about punctuation
niversity exams are just around the corner. Being in my third year of undergraduate study I want to offer a few study tips I’ve learned to fellow students, no matter what stage of study you’re at. Last minute ‘all-nighter’ style study cram sessions tend to be common around exam time, and are generally the result of poor time management. Whilst some students swear by last minute cram sessions and attribute them to positive results, recent research on the topic is far more mixed. In fact, a number of studies have found that the combination of extreme tiredness and the information overload caused by all-nighter cramming sessions may be doing more harm than good. The take home message: pace yourself during the weeks and days leading up to big exams. Do a larger number of shorter study sessions (no more than 4 hours straight at a time), and get plenty of sleep in between. Often during study times, students don’t have enough time to ensure that they are eating (and drinking) healthily. If you are like me and live out of home, consider cooking a few meals on the weekend and putting them in containers in the fridge. Keep up with physical activity during exam time too. Continue to play sport, go to the gym, surf or go for a jog or walk during study breaks. Your body, and mind, will thank you for it! These tips will help to reduce stress come exam time. Additionally if you are someone who gets super-stressed prior to a big test, consider using one of the many free counselling services available to students, at universities, TAFEs and schools. Good luck with your exams!

ith word processors having built-in grammar checkers, many question whether punctuation is still important. Punctuation changes the meaning of what you write. A lecturer gave his students the following sentence and asked them to punctuate it: “Woman without her man is nothing”. Many male students wrote, “Woman, without her man, is nothing”, whilst many female students wrote “Woman: without her, man is nothing”. Here are some simple guidelines: The apostrophe is used to form contractions (don’t or isn’t) and show possession (Lachlan’s book) but not for plurals. The comma is used to link clauses (statements) when a conjunction (joining word) is there. An example would be “The Wallabies played the Kiwis, and they won.” Without the conjunction “and”, a full stop (period) should be used. Commas are also used after dates in sentences, lists of items and in its most simple way to indicate you need to breathe. Use Quotation marks for quotes and speech but do not use them for emphasis. Use a punctuation mark only once at the end of a sentence, not multiple times. Using several exclamation marks just makes you look immature and lacking intelligence. They are also rarely used, so if you have a few, think about editing your writing. Punctuation basically informs us how to say a sentence aloud. It gives the reader instructions on what was actually meant. So, be pedantic about punctuation!

t was shocking for me to learn that up to 1 in 4 children across Australia go to school hungry. Poor nutrition early in life can impair neural development, leading to a lower IQ, behavioural issues and learning disabilities. There is nothing worse than being stuck in a meeting with your stomach rumbling from hunger, it makes it very difficult to concentrate on anything else. I confess when I am hungry I am extremely grumpy, and this is true for my children. They are little monsters when they are hungry – food magically transforms their entire attitude. In order for us all to function properly, the brain needs a constant supply of nutritious foods: healthy fats, proteins and carbohydrates, water, vitamins and minerals. Sugars found in fruit and vegetables power the brain and amino acids found in high-protein foods are responsible for the firing of the brain’s chemical messengers. When a child is deficient in any one of these food sources, they can appear confused, irritable and distracted. In an attempt to combat this widespread issue the Red Cross run an initiative called the Good Start Breakfast Club. They believe the majority of children that attend their breakfast clubs are there because food is not available at home. There are currently 180 clubs across Australia serving 3,500 children meals per day and the Red Cross is planning to open another 40 clubs in the next 12 months. It is all too easy to be judgemental of families, the reality is that a lot of Australian families are doing it tough and are simply unable to provide some of the basics to their children. If you wish to donate, visit www.redcross.org.au.

magine for a moment: 3 years on from reading this, the circumstances you find yourself in will be without doubt, the result of the actions you’ve taken; the lessons you’ve learned; and the people you choose to surround yourself with. In running a business, you need someone to bounce ideas off; to point you in the right direction; to help you focus on the important issues, to be your confidential ‘sounding board’ – to support and motivate you through the stressful and challenging times; and to help you achieve your business goals. A good mentor can make the difference between average results and outstanding results. So, what is a mentor? Webster’s dictionary defines a mentor as: “An experienced and trusted friend and prudent adviser.” The mentor shares their knowledge, experience and wisdom with you. Your mentor won’t tell you what to do, but will support and encourage you to create your own results and hold you accountable for achieving your goals. A mentor is someone you can trust and
be open with to discuss your progress, evaluate options, set goals, and generally work through any issues you may meet along the way. What would a good mentor do for me? Challenge you, and expand your thinking; listen, and motivate you to reach your full potential; and help you refine your ideas into practice and offer other ideas that perhaps you hadn’t considered. Your mentor may have contacts that you don’t, and can open doors by introducing you to contacts who can help you in areas such as goal setting, time management, resolving conflicts, and developing new skills; help you to identify and work with your strengths and weaknesses and see the wider picture – encouraging you to achieve a reasonable work/life balance. I am going to leave those thoughts with you and in my next column I will share more benefits of mentoring and how to find the right mentor. Don’t forget for all your business needs including support and advice, contact The Business Centre on 4925 7700 or visit www. businesscentre.com.au.

ith interest rates falling and the end of the financial year approaching, it is a good time to review financing. Commercial finance can be a fast, flexible way to get immediate use of equipment such as cars, trucks, plant or computers while conserving cash (working capital) for business development and other business running costs. Hire Purchase is generally used where you want to own the equipment at the end of the term and where you account for GST on an accrual basis. Ownership automatically transfers to you upon final payment. If you are financing high depreciating equipment or equipment that becomes obsolete quickly, then leasing or renting may be options. Here you use the equipment for an agreed period while making payments structured to suit your business cash flow. You have flexibility to vary the term. At the end of the term you simply return the equipment with no disposal costs. If the financier agrees,
you can re-finance or purchase the equipment. With both options the asset is off the balance sheet. You may be able to claim tax deductions on payments and stamp duty. According to the experts at Centrepoint, the availability of leasing, rental and HP finance has increased significantly compared to a few years ago. Interest rates for motor vehicles, trucks and construction equipment are particularly attractive at the moment, at around home loan rates. Finance for solar panels is also attractive. For businesses that already own relatively new (under two years) plant, equipment and vehicles you may want to consider a ‘sale and leaseback’ to access debt funds at these competitive rates. You “sell” the asset for its second hand value to the leasing company and immediately lease it back again, so retaining use of the asset but freeing up the capital tied up in that asset. Of course, your accountant or business banker can advise on the best option for your specific needs.

n this acutely observed character study from director Robert Zemeckis (‘Back to the Future’ trilogy, ‘Forrest Gump’) Denzel Washington proves, yet again, just why he is one of the most respected actors in Hollywood. Quite a slow burner, ‘Flight’ tells the story of commuter airline pilot Whip Whitaker (Washington). During a routine flight, things start to go pear shaped with the plane and, staring death in the face, Whip crashes the plane, managing to save nearly everyone on board. In the wake of is heroic actions, Whip discovers that he could face criminal charges as a blood test, taken while he was in hospital, reveals levels of alcohol and cocaine in his system. An investigation into the incident is launched and Whip is forced to confront his demons. With a great supporting cast including Don Chedle and John Goodman, ‘Flight’ could easily be one of Washington’s finest performances in recent memory.
t would be pretty naive to think that Ozzy Osbourne’s first outing in 35 years with the iconic Black Sabbath was going to achieve the same hard rock/heavy metal righteousness as ‘Sabbath Bloody Sabbath’, ‘Master of Reality’ et al. That being said, Ozzy and co have pulled out a darn fine album in ‘13’ with moments that are reminiscent of their earlier greatness. The biggest disappointment here is the absence of the blistering drums of Bill Ward, but Rage Against The Machine drummer Brad Wilk makes a pretty decent fist of things. The lurching eight-minute sludgeheavy blues rocker ‘Damaged Soul’ comes close to being the album’s finest moment while the thunderous ‘Loner’ also deserves a mention. While probably not the best place to start for newcomers, ‘13’ still deserves to sit in the Sabbath pantheon.

ow that we’ve passed the time in which Roland Emmerich’s (‘Independence Day’, ‘The Day After Tomorrow’) apocalyptic drama is set, we can sit back and watch with a sense of ease. Dr. Adrian Helmsley, part of a worldwide geophysical team investigating the effect on the earth of radiation from unprecedented solar storms, learns that the earth’s core is heating up. He warns US President Thomas Wilson that the crust of the earth is becoming unstable and that without proper preparations for saving a fraction of the world’s population, the entire race is doomed. Meanwhile, writer Jackson Curtis stumbles on the same information. While the world’s leaders race to build “arks” to escape the impending cataclysm, Curtis struggles to find a way to save his family. Meanwhile, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes of unprecedented strength wreak havoc around the world. Sure, it’s a cheesy, but there is enough in here, especially the special effects, to make for worthwhile viewing.

all those years with touring, and a lot of that touring was sort of miserable and lonely, I don’t know...touring is obviously not all glamorous, she reveals. “Keir [Nuttall, long-time collaborator and partner] and I were starting to get sick of each other having spent three years in the same room and then we came back to Toowoomba to move into a house of his grandparents’, who had both recently died, and the house was filled with all of their old things and photographs and furniture and kitchen stuff and Keir’s grandad’s car was still in the garage...and I think that was really
what coloured the album dark, that sense of mortality kind of hanging over the writing process. “I guess there are elements of [that darkness] but there is more joy in the brand new stuff. “‘Nightflight’, I love it and I do think it is the best album I have done, but it is quite dark and melancholy, so I think I am after some kind of release on the next one. Miller-Heidke told TE she would be giving fans a taste of the tracks from the new album, due out early next year, as well as material from ‘Nightflight’ and old favourites when she passes through Newcastle next Friday night for her show at Newcastle City Hall. “It will just be me and Keir, says MillerHeidke. “He co-writes everything with me so he plays guitar and I play a bit of piano as well. “It’s very much stripped back but ‘Nightflight’ was kind of written with that sort of configuration in mind. “We’ve been doing it like this for a long time, particularly on the Ben Folds tour we did in America. “We did close to 100 gigs with him, so we feel very much like a well-oiled machine, Keir and I. “We will be bringing out that new stuff on this tour as well so there will be some brand new stuff that no-one has heard. Catch Kate Miller-Heidke when she plays at Newcastle City Hall on Friday, June 28 with spruced-up country boy Franky Walnut supporting.

hether you love or loathe her unique, operatic voice, there is no denying Brisbane-born Kate Miller-Heidke is one of the hardest working women in Australian music right now. Since releasing her third solo record ‘Nightflight’ in April 2012, the songstress has embarked on extensive touring through the US, Canada and Europe, culminating in support slots for the newly re-formed Ben Folds Five on the band’s massive 80 date American tour and kicked off 2013 by appearing via hologram in the English National Opera’s production of Dutchman Michel Van Der Aa’s sci-fi opera ‘Sunken Garden’ in London. re you part of a band that never really got over that initial joy of bashing out a couple of tunes in the garage on the weekends? Then the ABC has something that you’ll want to sink your teeth into. Exhumed, an ABC event that will run across all ABC radio stations, ABC online, ABC Open and ABC TV, aims to find the best band you’ve never heard of and to applaud those who are out there making music just for the sheer fun of it. Exhumed is not for has-beens. It’s not for wanna-bes. It’s for never-weres. Entries to the competition open on June 24 and band members must be over 30 years old and in a band of two or more people and can play any music genre. The process will be covered in the TV series which will premiere on ABC1 from November 14. In addition, an information session will be held at the Cambridge Hotel on Sunday, June 30 from 1pm sharp. For more information, visit www. abc.net.au/exhumed.

t may’ve been a long time between drinks for Central Coast-born rockers Something With Numbers with their last album ‘Engineering the Soul’ dropping in 2008, but with a brand-spanking new album hot off the presses and a national tour about to kick off, the band are definitely looking forward to making up for lost time. “Yeah it’s going to be good,” drummer Lachlan West told TE. “It’s a really good chance for us to give the fans a taste of what we’ve been working on. We did a little east coast run earlier this year, which showcased a lot of the songs off the new album, but it’s always good to get out again.” Since going quiet after ‘Engineering The Soul’, the band has gone through a few changes, namely the replacement of guitarist Lachlan Scott with Trent Crawford and West’s inclusion into the Something With Numbers fold in place of original drummer Dave McBeath. West said the new album ‘Eleven Eleven’ had reinvigorated the band, largely due to the “absence makes the heart grow fonder” factor. “I think that, because the band hasn’t done much touring or anything for a
while, we’re all a lot more tolerant of each other on the road because we haven’t been in each other’s pockets,” he said. The latest album is still rooted firmly in the same frenetic punk rock-esque territory of previous albums, but this time around, even moreso than their last effort, many more influences have crept into the band’s oeuvre as well as a newfound sense of space that brings an even greater depth to proceedings. The band enlisted the services of ARIA-nominated producer Lachlan Mitchell (The Jezabels, The Whitlams), who produced their debut album, ‘Etiquette’, for the sessions. “Yeah Lachlan is a really good guy and he managed to create a very relaxed atmosphere and he was really nurturing with our ideas – he was a pleasure to work with,” West said. While he has been busy working into the Something With Numbers fold, West is almost as busy as a onearmed drummer after he also took on drumming duties for Sydney rockers, The Vines. “It has been a pretty busy twelve months for me,” he laughed. Catch Something With Numbers when they play at the Cambridge Hotel on Friday, June 28.

ith the touring cycle supporting his starkly honest and deeply engaging debut solo album, ‘King of the Sun’ about to wrap up, former Novocastrian singer and songwriter Jamie Hay is already making tentative plans for his next project. “Yeah, it’s been out for a little under a year now and I’ve managed to do a hell of a lot of touring on the back of it. People seem to be taking to it so yeah, I’m stoked,” he said. Hay also said now that he had been touring the album pretty consistently since its release, he was looking to wind back his road commitments while he concentrates on a couple of new projects. “I’m going to become a father later in the year so that will be a pretty large focus
of my life,” he said. “I’ve started working on a couple of new songs as well, but I really don’t want to rush them. When I’ve got a few songs that I’m completely happy with, I’ll look at getting back into the studio.” Cutting his teeth in Newcastle with bands such as Stolen Youth and seminal hardcore outfit Conation before relocating to Melbourne and spreading his musical wings in A Death In The Family and Fear Like Us, Hay said the prospect of stepping out from behind the safety net of a band was, at first, both intimidating and exhilarating. “It was intimidating but I’ve always been interested in challenging myself musically and playing acoustic is something I’ve wanted to do for ages – even before the Conation days. The first time I played by myself I felt as though it was the first show I’d ever played.” Catch Jamie Hay when he plays at the Lass O’Gowrie on Friday, June 21.

hen it comes to Australian entertainers who could be described as a ‘jack of all trades’, you would have to look pretty far and wide to find someone who is more qualified for the title than Jon English. Since stepping out from the orchestral rock band Sebastian Hardie in the early 70s, English has become one of Australia’s most-loved entertainers with 16 albums and a formidable list of musical theatre and television credits that includes his iconic portrayal as Judas in the Australian production of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, and ‘The Mikado’, ‘Pirates of Penzance’, ‘All Together Now’ and ‘Against The Wind.’ Now, the iconic performer is heading back to Newcastle to celebrate 30 years since the release of his seminal live double album recorded with the Foster Brothers (Peter Deacon, John Dallimore, John Coker, Keith Kerwin and Greg Henson) ‘Beating The Boards’ and English said he couldn’t wait to return to the rock-friendly city. “I always love playing in Newcastle because it has always been such a great rock and roll town – always has and always will be,” he told TE. From 1981, when English recruited the band for a tour of Germany and Scandinavia, until the release of ‘Beating The Boards’ in 1983, he also released the albums ‘Some People’ and ‘Jokers and Queens’ as
well as touring as the support act for Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. English said while he was loathe to overanalyse what it was about the line-up that clicked so well, he said be believed it was the ease with which everything came together. “I guess it was just the groove we created,” he said. “Everybody was playing their own bits and it all just fit together so nicely. We were very creative and wrote some fantastic songs together. I really loved working with these guys.” English, who said his biggest break came with his role of Judas, said he felt very fortunate that he was still performing all these years later. “I basically went to the audition because I wanted to know what the audition process was like – I had no expectations,” he said. “I’m just very lucky that I can still make a living at this – if I was an English teacher, which is what I’d be doing if I didn’t audition for ‘Superstar’, I’d still be doing am-dram and playing in rock and roll bands on the weekend – it’s just what I love to do.” Catch Jon English and the Foster Brothers when they play at Wests Lambton on Wednesday, July 3. TE is giving you the chance to win a double pass to see Jon English and the Foster Brothers. To enter, email your name and contact details to editorial@newcastlepost.com.au with ‘Jon English’ in the subject line by no later than 5pm on Tuesday, June 25. Winners will be notified by phone.

he impossibly catchy power pop of Brisbane five-piece Hey Geronimo and the synth-pop strains of Melbourne electro meisters Strange Talk are set to blow the doors off Newcastle’s newest venue, the Small Ballroom, when the two bands bring their ‘Strange Geronimo’ tour to Newcastle this weekend. Pete Kilroy, vocalist and guitarist for Hey Geronimo, said he was looking forward to getting out on the road with their Melbourne peers, even if they may’ve felt like they deserved a break. “Yeah we’re all really pumped,” he said. “Although it’s funny because we had just come home from the Presidents of the USA tour and we were just exhausted. We were looking forward to just putting our feet up for a bit but, after a while of doing that we found that we just couldn’t wait to get back out on the road again.” Hey Geronimo, who could be described as an indie rock supergroup with members coming from the likes of Blame Ringo, Montpellier and the Boat People, are certainly making hay while the sun shines. After pricking up various industry ears with their self-titled debut
EP (produced by Matt Redlich – Ball Park Music – and Brisbane uber-producer Magoo), the band are wasting no time getting their music out there. They are currently in the studio recording a followup EP and album at the same time. “We’re recording a lot of new tracks at the moment with Magoo again and Sam Cromack from Ball Park Music and we’ll more than likely release an EP in the not too distant future and then the album will come out,” Kilroy explained. “For people who are familiar with the current EP, the new one won’t be too radical a departure, but the album will be a lot more introspective – we didn’t want 40 minutes of music that was in your face – we wanted some light and shade in there.” Anyone who is au fait with the band’s ear-worm capable upbeat indie tunes could have a fair expectation that these guys like to have their fair share of fun onstage – and they’d be right. “The whole idea with Hey Geronimo is just to have a bit of fun,” Kilroy said. “In our previous bands, maybe we took things a little too seriously so we’re just keen to get out there and have a good time.” Catch Hey Geronimo and Strange Talk when the ‘Strange Geronimo’ tour rolls into town at the Small Ballroom, 139 Maitland Road, Islington on Friday, June 21.

Think Negative Gearing to boost your portfolio
Q 860 Buchanan Road Bed: 3 | Bath: 1 | Car: 4 For Sale: Over $798,000
S
itting on a picturesque 3.2 hectares with a tranquil outlook over the dams to open farmland, this three-bedroom house makes the most of its position with wide wrap-around verandas and an undercover entertainment deck. The house has spotted gum polished floorboards, high ceilings with ornate cornice, ducted airconditioning and a wood-burning combustion fire. The house also has an open-plan living
and dining area that is adjacent to the country-style kitchen. The property has a two-storey shed with a games room, kitchenette and a guest room office. There is also a three-bay machinery shed, a four-car garage, two dams and three water tanks. For more information, phone PRD Nationwide Hunter Valley on 4934 2000 or listing agent Stacey Pethers on 0407 011 818. Inspect: By appointment.
: What is the best way to build a property portfolio? A: Improving business and consumer confidence, job security and concerns about share market volatility are all triggers for buying a property investment to help you build wealth. At the end of the day, a quality, welllocated investment property is one of the best ways of creating long-term wealth, while our tax system even enables you to ‘negative gear’ the costs of owning it. A rental home is said to be negatively geared when the ‘costs’ of maintaining it (mortgage interest, repairs and expenses such as council rates, strata management levies, property management and so on) outweigh the rental income generated by the property. This ‘loss’ is able to be offset against a salary, wage, dividend income, bank account interest and so on, to reduce an individual’s annual taxable income.
For tax advice about the benefits of owning a negatively-geared investment home, contact your accountant. You can kick start your property research by talking with your local Raine & Horne agent. Q: Why is it important to claim depreciation on an investment property? A: As an investment property ages, items and fittings start to wear out or ‘depreciate’. Fortunately, the Australian Tax Office (ATO) allows landlords to claim the impact of depreciation as a tax deduction, which could be worth many thousands of dollars annually depending on the size and scope of your investment property portfolio. However, the truth of the matter is that almost 80 per cent of landlords are missing out on thousands of dollars in depreciation, according to BMT Tax Depreciation. Often this is because landlords don’t have a depreciation report, which outlines the items that can be claimed.

NOTES from the real nrl
by John “Pav” Fahey, General Manager, Newcastle Rugby League
W
Games go down to the wire sought-after double chance at finals time up for grabs. This game will definitely give some real insight into what each Club is capable of in 2013. On Sunday, the Kurri Bulldogs are in sixth place, one point behind Cessnock, going into their clash with Port Stephens at Tomaree. No-one has forgotten what happened in the first round up at Kurri when the Sharks won all for games on the day. With Port turning on 8 points, one behind Kurri, this has the makings of a great contest. Finally at Cahill Oval at 3pm on Sunday the Central Newcastle side will need to be on their guard against lakes United on the Seagulls home turf. There were some real signs of cohesion starting to show through in the narrow loss to Port Stephens, and Central coach Paul Davis knows a slip up here will make it difficult to make ground. Leaders Macquarie Scorpions will take advantage of the bye next weekend. On the representative scene, the Senior Newcastle Rebels proved too strong for a gallant Northern Tigers to the tune of 38-12 on Friday night at Cessnock. We will now face Illawarra, who had an absolute last gasp victory over an unlucky Central Coast on Saturday in the final at Dubbo on Saturday, June 29. With our Under 18’s also qualifying for their final on the same card, Saturday week promises to be an intense day for all players and staff. Go the Rebels!

hat an intriguing final three games to complete the first round of home and away fixtures we had on Sunday. With three games from Round 8 having to be played, each of these went right down to the wire to show just how good a competition we have on our hands with the Toohey’s Cup for 2013. Macquarie were fortunate to get over the top of South Newcastle and will turn into the Second Round leading the competition, Lakes United were unlucky going down to Port Stephens, and Maitland and Central Newcastle battled it out before the Pickers won their fifth game in a row to move into third place on for and against. At 3pm on Saturday we have the second replay of the 2012 Grand Final with Cessnock hosting Western Suburbs, who will be fresh from the bye. The Goannas really need a strong back half of the season to make up for their slow start. Wests will be looking to consolidate their position just behind leaders Macquarie. In the other game at 3pm on Saturday, will be Maitland hosting South Newcastle. The Lions were unlucky as stated earlier against Macquarie last week, and recruit Sam Wooden will only improve from here after his debut for the Club on Sunday. With both sides turning on 12 points with 5 wins and 3 losses from the first round, they sit in third and fourth respectively with the much

Young Knights sent packing Under 20s side’s solid run ended following loss to the Storm in Melbourne
T
he Newcastle Knights under 20’s suffered their first defeat in five rounds with a 36-8 loss against the Melbourne Storm at AAMI Park on Sunday afternoon. Captain Adam Clydsdale returned to the number 9 after a stint in the first grade and shared hooker duties with Danny Levi. The young Knights went in to the half time break trailing by 16 points and were unable to claw their way back in to the game. The Knights found themselves with an opportunity just eight minutes into the first half after Christian Welch was penalised and put on report for a high tackle on five-eighth David Oakes. The team decided against taking the 2-points and were unable to crack the home side’s defence. The Storm opened the scoring eight minutes later with Richard Kennar sliding through the defence on the right edge. Matt McGahan converted and the Storm lead 6-0. McGahan then picked up the Storm’s second try of the match, converting it, to give his team a 12-point lead with 24 minutes left to play in the first half. The Knights hit back in the 31st minute through Lachlan Shipard, who scored in the corner on the back of a penalty for a shoulder charge on Oakes. They were made to pay for a mistake on their own line with McGahan going over for a second, before extending the lead with a penalty goal after Dan Kilian was put on report for a high tackle. The second half started just as the first half
