ore than 5000 hectares destroyed. A day’s worth of flights cancelled from Newcastle Airport. Huge traffic delays and days of stress and worry for firefighters and residents. And now we learn it was deliberately started. Police also arrested a 14-year-old boy after he started a grass fire at Rutherford on Sunday that thankfully was extinguished before getting out of control. As if our fire control services did not have enough to do.

hen will they learn. The announcement from police that the Heatherbrae inferno was deliberately lit is both infuriating and disappointing. Police and fire authorities could not possibly do more to get the message out about the dangers of lighting fires and the substantial increases in penalties in recent years. At the time of writing this column, police had arrested, but not charged an 11-year-old boy on suspicion of deliberately lighting the fire that destroyed more than 5,000 hectares at Heatherbrae and also a second blaze at Raymond Terrace. This followed a 14-year-old boy being charged and refused bail after lighting a grass fire at Rutherford on Sunday. There is always the argument that they are just kids and are not fully aware of the severity of their actions. I would counter this by saying my five-year-old daughter knows the difference between right and wrong and that heading out into the bush with a lighter or box of matches is not going to end well for anyone. Unfortunately, apart from relying

on the public’s common sense, there isn’t a great deal that can be done if somebody is determined to start a fire. As mentioned earlier, the criminal penalties have been stiffened to the point where even the most keen arsonist would have to reconsider whether it is worth spending numerous years in jail for the thrill of seeing how much damage you can cause. Continuing education in schools of the dangers and penalties will hopefully have some effect. ******************* Relationships Australia NSW have been in touch to advise of a @newcastlepost Newcastle Post

free counselling service for anyone affected by the bushfires. People can be affected by community emergencies in various ways – the anxiety of imminent danger; dealing with uncertainty; stress on relationships; the experience of loss; and supporting others, particularly children, through the crisis. The fatigue and worry of constant vigilance and concern for neighbours and family can take its toll. In times of crisis it’s important for people to remember to take care of themselves too. Woodrising residents ready to help maintain council reserve Amelia Parrott

he bushfires that ravaged towns south of Lake Macquarie last week have had a uniting effect on residents of Woodrising, who are now eager to get their hands dirty clearing a neglected Lake Macquarie City Council reserve on their doorstep. Residents claim the reserve, which backs onto homes in Fremantle Drive, Liberty Close, Windward Close and Southern Cross Drive at Woodrising, has not been back burned for more than a decade, despite the area being identified by council as being at “very high risk of bush fires.” Concerns are held over the amount of dried leaves, tall grass, and fallen tree branches that litter the site. Fremantle Drive resident, Rell Derrett moved into the area in 2002, the year a major blaze tore through Blackalls Park, Fennells Bay, Teralba and Woodrising, forcing her to evacuate her home with her family and pets as eucalyptus trees exploded at her back fence. Mrs Derrett believed the amount of fuel currently on the reserve is putting residents at risk of an even more severe fire. “You don’t want to leave the house,” Mrs Derrett said. “When it’s really windy and hot, you’re not game to go anywhere because, ‘What if?’” A petition is currently being circulated amongst Woodrising residents requesting

Council cull larger trees close to property boundaries, address deteriorating access points affected by water erosion, conduct back burning in the nearby quarry during cooler months and establish a community partnership, whereby local residents would help clear vegetation from the site. “It may not work but at least we can all rest easy and say we did everything we could possibly do to protect life and property.” A spokesperson from Lake Macquarie City Council said the firebreak between the reserve and properties is maintained twice a year by Council. Maintaining a healthy relationship with your ‘breast’ friends
F
rom the moment they emerged smack bang in the middle of the softball season when I was 11 years old, my breasts and I have endured a rather rocky relationship. I was not the kind of girly-girl who’d been wishin’ and a-hopin’ the boob fairy would leave a set under my pillow. No, I was more the Tomboy type who dreaded this day and no wonder - I had the worst short stop season ever! Understandable given how incredibly difficult it becomes to catch a softball when your arms are permanently folded over to cover your chest. Fast forward a number of years and B1 and B2 were now my new breast friends. Almost overnight, I found I actually kind of liked they way they looked in a bikini and so, apparently, did other people. More years fly by and in that time they have embarrassed me greatly with the odd wardrobe malfunction, the most memorable being the day the right one popped out to say ‘howdy’ to the priest who was baptising my son. But on the other hand, they have nourished my child, caught crumbs before they land in my lap and, with a bit of help, been a spectacular accessory to the odd outfit ...God bless the inventor of the Wonderbra. The point is, my breasts, like yours, your mother’s, your daughter’s or your sister’s serve many-a-purpose and contribute much to our lives and to the

They have their funny moments, their sexy times, their too big, too small, and just right times and all we have to do, apart from wear a correctly fitted bra to prevent them swinging around our knees, is to check them regularly. research, treatment and awareness of breast cancer. Like you, I have been touched by breast cancer. Whether its battling the disease, being claimed by the disease, conquering the disease or simply being there for the women in our lives going through it, we all have a story to tell. The objective of breast cancer awareness month is to ensure every one of those stories has a happy ending which is why we need to continue to support the research into finding a cure.
The Cancer Council’s Pink Ribbon Day helps raises funds in support of the many thousands of women affected by breast and gynaecological cancers. Long-serving MP resumes role as Federal Opposition Whip Amelia Parrott
S
hortland MP, Jill Hall, has been reappointed as Federal Opposition Whip. Ms Hall’s appointment comes after Bill Shorten’s Labor leadership victory over former Deputy Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, last Monday, and the appointment of Tanya Plibersek as Deputy Opposition Leader and Penny Wong as Labor Senate Leader. Ms Hall, who held the Labor Whip position from 2004 to 2012, said she was delighted to take up the position again. “As Whip I will be involved in a wide range of Parliamentary business and will
work closely with all Opposition Members, including the senior leadership team.” “The Whip’s role is to ensure that members of the Opposition operate effectively in both the House of Representatives and the Federation Chamber. “It is an important organisation role and it helps to ensure the smooth operation of the House.” Meanwhile, Member for Hunter, Joel Fitzgibbon has retained his place on Labor’s frontbench, being announced as Shadow Minister for Agriculture on Friday. “I am delighted Bill Shorten [Labor leader] has provided me with the opportunity to continue in the agricultural portfolio,” Mr Fitzgibbon said in a statement.

Go ahead for restructure
Newcastle Council rescission motion narrowly fails to maintain status quo Amelia Parrott
N
ewcastle City Council will go ahead with its controversial restructure despite the efforts of Labor councillors, who sought to rescind the new corporate structure that Council adopted last month, claiming they were not given enough time to review the it before being asked to vote on the issue. A rescission motion put forward by councillors, Tim Crakanthorp, Nuatali Nelmes, Stephanie Posniak and Jason Dunn, was defeated 6 – 7, amid cries of, “shame, from the public gallery. Cr Crakanthorp said councillors had received far less information leading up to the latest restructure than they had in previous years. “We haven’t had briefings to the depth I believe most councillors would like to have, he said. “In previous years we have had briefings and workshops and what happened this time around wasn’t the same. Speaking against the motion, Cr Brad Luke, warned councillors of falling into old habits of rescinding motions that had been passed at previous meetings. “It’s not a good look, he said. Cr Nelmes said the ramifications of the restructure, particularly on the arts community, had not been discussed. The new structure reportedly

includes the amalgamation of three senior management positions at the Newcastle Art Gallery, Newcastle
Museum and the Civic Theatre. The restructure also includes the removal of 93 council positions, including five
middle management positions, resulting in annual salary savings of around $6.5 million.

tate Education Minister, Adrian Piccoli visited Gateshead last week to tour the new site of the Lakeside School for Specific Purposes. The school, which caters to 43 students with intellectual disabilities and behavioural issues from preschool to Year 12, recently relocated from its temporary location at Gateshead Public School on the Pacific Highway, to the site of the old Gateshead West Public School site at a cost of $2.2 million. The newly refurbished site includes seven classrooms, therapy spaces, as well as spaces for life skills and special programs, three play areas, a chill out zone and a vegetable garden. Mr Piccoli said amalgamating two existing primary schools created positive outcomes for students at both Gateshead
Public School and Lakeside School. “In the past people have seen the amalgamation of schools as a threat when in fact in many cases it is an opportunity,” he said. “By merging the two primary schools you free up a site, you free up money to then reinvest into those sites and now you have one primary school with a couple of hundred students and a school that is almost brand new.” Lakeside School principal, Darren Barnett, said moving the school from its previous highway-side location to its current site has had a positive impact on the behaviour of students. “This new site is so quiet you can hear the birds,” he said. “It’s a much more calming environment for the students.” The relocation of the school was made possible through funds left over from the Federal Government’s Building the Education Revolution program.

Warning after dog attack Vicious fight leaves Dudley resident fearing for safety of children Melissah Comber
D
udley dog owners are being warned to keep their pets and children safe, after a vicious attack left a shitzu fighting for his life. Sandra Bice’s 12-year-old dog, Chewbacca was attacked in the driveway of her Ocean Street home around 3pm on October 8, after he slipped out the front door while Mrs Bice was checking the mail. Mrs Bice was not aware that Chewbacca had gotten out until a neighbour arrived saying she had taken the dog to the vet, thinking he had been hit by a car. It was only on arriving at the vet that Mrs Bice was told that Chewbacca had actually been attacked by another dog. “I didn’t think he would make it with all that blood [on the driveway]. The scary thing is that it happened so quick – there was only about 45 minutes between him getting out and being found.” Although he survived, Chewbacca was left with permanent injuries, including the loss of sight in one eye. He also sustained a pneumothorax and over 20 punctures to his neck and torso. Mrs Bice’s neighbour said that she witnessed a dog fleeing the scene. The dog matches the description of a dog that Mrs Bice said she had seen roaming the neighbourhood in the prior fortnight, which she describes as a ‘big, brown crossbreed, about a metre tall’. However, without a positive identification, Lake

with the matter unless there is a witness that can definitively identify the dog(s) responsible,” Council said in a statement. For now, Mrs Bice just wants other dog owners and parents of young children to be aware. “You have kids who play in their
front yard and [Dudley Public School] less than a kilometre up the road,” Mrs Bice said. “A lot of people around here don’t keep their dogs on the lead – if they’re not the perpetrator they may be the next victim, and that’s what I’m worried about.”

Motorists urged to slow down for vision impaired pedestrians Amelia Parrott

egotiating the busy streets of Newcastle on foot can be a challenge at the best of times with hurried motorists, cyclists and fellow pedestrians each trying to get from A to B. Throw vision impairment into the mix and the task can move from challenging to downright intimidating. Statistics released by Guide Dogs NSW/ ACT last week reveal that half of the organisations blind or vision impaired clients have had a near miss with a vehicle over the past five years while trying to cross the road and a further one in 15 have been struck by a vehicle. Guide Dogs NSW/ACT regional manager, John Payne, urged motorists to slow down at crossings and give pedestrians plenty of time to cross safely. “Motorists are the critical factor,” he said. “We’re asking people just to slow down and give the pedestrians a bit more time. “It’s only a few seconds we are asking for because we don’t want our clients to be terrified all the time.” Maitland resident, Brother Ed Collins, is legally blind and uses a support cane to help him get around. While he can perceive shapes and figures, Br Collins said he was still wary of motorists and had witnessed a near miss whilst walking with a companion through Maitland when a car failed to

Kurri Festival: Celebrating Civic Week in style
Seca Solution: Help for developers with traffic issues
Action from last year’s billy cart derby
A
dream to reinvent the “buzz” of the Civic Week entertainment of past years has become a reality due to the efforts of a dedicated steering committee charged with putting together the Kurri Kurri Community Festival to be held on October 26. Meryl Swanson from radio station 2HD will host the festival at Kurri Rugby League Ground, which commences at 12pm with displays and acts from local groups. At 1pm, the Kurri Rotary Club hosts a billy cart derby on down Hampden Street, adjacent to the rugby league ground. Kurri Men’s Shed are building three carts for the derby. Billy cart derbys were a feature of Civic Week celebrations in the 1970s . Rotary Club members are hoping that continuing its revival will help to raise community interest in children’s events of the past. Entry fees for the derby are $5 for under 16’s and $10 for 16 years and over. Entry
forms and further information at www. kurrirotary.org.au Following the billy cart derby action, a children’s concert will get underway around 5pm, a local artists and variety concert as well as a cheerleaders concert up until 7pm when ABBA tribute band ‘FABBA’ will perform until around 9pm. Festival coordinator Carol Doherty said the cheerleader competition is open to all ages with cash prizes for winners and runners-up as well as many vouchers generously supplied by McDonald’s Family Restaurant Kurri Kurri. Information on the cheerleaders competition can be obtained from Carol on 4938 0510 or carol@ kurrikurri.com or also Davina Dawes at davina.dawes@det.nsw.gov.au Carol also pointed out that a ticket to see FABBA is generally around $50, with visitors to the festival able to see the show for an optional gold coin donation.

O
ne of Newcastle’s leading traffic consultants, Sean Morgan, is on the move having recently established Seca Solution, a traffic engineering consultancy, with his business partner Cathy Thomas. They have been supported and nurtured by The Business Centre in King Street Newcastle. He and Cathy chose the small business incubator when they were looking to locate in the heart of the city. “Being close to NSW Transport, the RMS and Council, as well as within walking distance of many of our clients was
important in our decision where to locate. The support provided by the centre has been invaluable with mentoring and business development as well as the camaraderie of a friendly work environment. We don’t feel we are alone which can be a challenge for new businesses” said Sean. Helping developers achieve approval for the traffic and transport elements of their development is Seca Solution’s speciality and they certainly like to walk the talk, or in this case cycle to work. The centre facilitate this by installing secure bike storage within the building.

Aspect School: A helping hand for kids with autism

A
playgroup for children newly-diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is gathering momentum at the Aspect Hunter School at Thornton. Supported and funded by the Greater Charitable Foundation to the tune of $330,000 over three years, the playgroup began in March this year and is an extension to the Early Intervention Readiness Program (EIRP) which aims to strengthen your family’s ability to facilitate a smooth transition for children into early intervention services. Many parents find a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder difficult to comprehend and the program aims to provide information on ASDs, early
intervention, family support service options, funding entitlements and additional service options. Greater Charitable Foundation CEO Anne Long visited the school last Wednesday keen to lend a hand. “To witness and be able to help the dedicated Autism Spectrum staff to support families through a daunting and difficult time is very rewarding,” Ms Long said. As well as providing funding the Greater Charitable Foundation organises for Greater staff to volunteer in the work of its charity partners. A total of 140 staff have volunteered more than 65 hours of support across nine partners. Funded by the profits from the Greater Building Society, the Greater Charitable Foundation has already allocated $3 million to nine partners. It is currently assessing applications for another $1 million in funding for 2014.

Bell Partners: Michael Clarke on hand to open Newcastle office
L
eading accounting, business advisory and financial services firm Bell Partners last week opened an office in Newcastle to meet growing demand in the region. Australian cricket captain and longtime client of the firm, Michael Clarke, was on hand to officially open the new office ahead of the upcoming Ashes series against England. CEO of Bell Partners Anthony Bell said he was attracted to opening an office in Newcastle due to the strong economic outlook in the Hunter. “The NSW Government has flagged major investment with the proposed long term lease of the Newcastle Port and the Light Rail Project which will be a major boost not only for the city but also local business,” he said. “We see small, medium and large business growing rapidly on the back of the $350 million infrastructure investment. “We have done our homework carefully and we believe that our one-stop financial services offering will meet future strong demand.” Bell Partners has featured in BRW’s top 100 accounting
Michael Clarke and Anthony Bell, CEO of Bell Partners
firms and has been awarded BRW’s most productive firm every year since 2003. Mr Clarke said “I have been with the firm for most of my professional career and have the utmost trust and respect in the Advisory and Accounting services that Bell Partner’s provides, not only for me, but my family and for my business. “It is my pleasure to open the new Bell Partners Newcastle office. “The firm has been such a strong supporter of mine over
the years, I am now in turn thrilled to see their growth and success”. Mr Bell – who is also a business media commentator – said that the firm already had appointed a managing director with strong links to the local community. “Brad Ferguson has a strong understanding of the Hunter – living and working in Newcastle on and off for 20 years,” he said. “We have a highly personalised model and a lot of experience among our
staff in our Sydney, Brisbane and Norwest offices, but we understand that Newcastle clients want to deal with someone who not only is a great business adviser but understands what makes their community tick.” Mr Bell, who is a Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht line honors winner, has raised more than $3 million for worthy causes through the company’s own charity, the Loyal Foundation (www. loyalfoundation.com.au). “A lot of the money raised has gone to fund muchneeded medical equipment throughout Australia and as a result of opening a Newcastle office we are looking to strengthen our relationships with local children’s hospitals including John Hunter Children’s Hospital,” he said. “We are here for the long term and want to make a big contribution not only to the business sector but also the wider community.” In June, Bell Partners hosted a free post budget seminar to inform Newcastle residents and local businesses on changes to superannuation, personal and corporate taxation plus the outlook for the economy, jobs and business.

T
he heart of Newcastle’s cultural precinct will come to life next Friday 25 October from 4pm to 7pm to celebrate the opening of Laman Street. Work to move utilities, reconstruct the road and create a shared plaza for pedestrians and traffic is now complete and visitors to the area will be able to enjoy much improved access to two of our most popular attractions Newcastle Art Gallery and Newcastle Region Library. A street party has been organised to mark the occasion and I encourage everyone to come along. There will be entertainment, jumping castles, face painting, food and craft stalls on the street as well as a critter show from the team at Blackbutt Reserve. Newcastle Art Gallery will be open late and there are offering all visitors to the event
free entry to their fashionable current exhibition After Five: Fashion from the Darnell Collection. Newcastle Region Library will also be open and they have organised for the Lovett Gallery to open late so visitors will be able to check out the fantastic Remote and Wild exhibition. Rosie’s School of Rock will be performing live in the library forecourt from 6pm to 7pm and there will be live Jazz downstairs at Newcastle Art Gallery. This celebration will mark a fresh start for the precinct and I encourage everyone to come along and enjoy the free entertainment and exhibitions, browse through the markets stalls and grab a twilight alfresco dinner. For all the details visit www. newcastle.nsw.gov.au and search for laman street.

Join us for a day of fun to celebrate Children’s Week
believe that caring for the next generation is caring for our future. Children’s Week is a national event held annually across Australia in the last week of October. This year’s theme is about celebrating ‘the child’s right to play’, something that Lake Macquarie City Council celebrates throughout the entire year. Council hosts many wonderful interactive activities that focus their attention on children and what’s important to them. Lake Macquarie City Library and Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery often organise events and activities that encourage children to develop new skills and to display their talents through arts and crafts classes, school holiday activities and educational programs. This Saturday, Council is hosting a Family Fun Day as part of Children’s
Week celebrations to highlight many of the services Council offers to families in Lake Macquarie. Family Day Care educators, and Library and Art Gallery staff will all be on hand throughout the day to talk to families about the programs they offer to help children learn and grow. There will also be a range of fun activities for all ages to enjoy and a free sausage sizzle as well. I know how important play and interaction can be for a child’s education after watching both of my children’s skills grow and develop through participating in these type of activities, whether they be in the community, at their local library or at school. I encourage everyone to come along to the Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery on Saturday between 10am – 1pm to enjoy a free fun day out with the whole family.

Driving stats: More seniors staying behind the wheel
T
he proportion of Australian seniors (65+) who drive has grown by 10% in the last 10 years—but 25-34 year olds are today less inclined to get behind the wheel, the latest research from Roy Morgan shows. Australians aged 65+ are now more likely to drive than 25-34 year olds. Back in 2003, 87.5% of the younger group drove compared with 75.9% of seniors; today, 83.3% of seniors are still behind the wheel but just 82.0% of Australians in their late 20s and early 30s drive. The proportional rise among seniors equates to over one million more motorists aged over 65, and now makes these drivers the third largest bloc of road users behind 35-49 and 50-64 year olds, with the 25-34 year-olds bumped down to fourth. In other age groups, the proportion of drivers is relatively unchanged since 2003. Over 92% of 35-64 year olds drive, and 71% of 18-24 year olds have taken to the road. There are now 15.6 million drivers on
our roads—an increase of more than 2.6 million over the last decade. The overall proportion of Australians driving (81.9%) is up less than 0.1% since 2003. Jordan Pakes, Group Account Director – Automotive, Roy Morgan Research, says: “Almost the same proportion of Aussies are driving now as 10 years ago. But with the population increasing by around 20% in that time, this means there are also 20% more drivers on our roads. “Over the last decade, the number of drivers 65+ has increased by more than a million, accounting for close to 40% of the overall growth in driver numbers. “Across the major age groups, the only segment to have declined significantly is the 25-34 years olds – with 82% currently driving, down from 87.5% in 2003. “According to Roy Morgan’s revolutionary classification system Helix Personas – closer analysis reveals that almost 40% of non-driving 25-34 year olds belong to the Metrotech Community (click

ecently released research has indicated that caravan and camping holidays are becoming one of the tourism industry’s strongest growth sectors. Figures from the National Visitor Survey for the financial year ending June 2013 showed that 2.3 million people staying more than 11.2 million nights in commercial parks and camping grounds, an 11 per cent increase in domestic visitors and a 7 per cent increase in visitor nights over the previous twelve months. Theo Whitmont, President of the NSW Caravan and Camping Industry Association (CCIA) said that “NSW is the Nation’s favourite state for caravanning and camping holidays” and noted that the results in the June quarter were particularly strong, with an additional 92,000 visitors on the corresponding quarter in 2012, staying an additional 642,000 nights.”
Lyndal Gray, CEO of the CCIA noted that a number of factors had contributed to these results. “The CCIA’s $400,000 joint

STAYING HEALTHY

Smoking even more deadly Don’t be afraid to tempt your tastebuds with new varieties than we thought
I
t’s funny how smokers say it’s their choice to smoke and no one should be able to tell them what to do. Have they ever stopped and thought about why they actually started smoking? There is an old quote that goes something like: “Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done, because they think they want to do it”. Sounds to me like the cigarette companies have some pretty good leaders. And they are very good at finding followers. It turns out smoking is even more deadly than previously thought. A study of 200,000 Australians shows the habit cuts 10 years off the average smoker’s life and is directly linked to two thirds of deaths in current smokers. The four-year analysis of health records in the Sax Institute’s “45 and Up Study” shows even moderate smoking is a major killer. “We all know that smoking is bad for your health. But until now we haven’t had direct large-scale evidence from Australia about just how bad it is,” says study leader Professor Emily Banks, the scientific director of the “45 and Up Study”. The study, supported by the National Heart Foundation in collaboration with Cancer Council NSW, shows risk increases with the number of cigarettes smoked per day. The risk of death is doubled even among those smoking an average of 10 cigarettes a day, says study co-author Associate Professor Freddy Sitas from Cancer Council NSW.
W
ines such as Chardonnay, Shiraz or Sauvignon Blanc are instantly recognisable by name in almost any household in Australia. They are varieties that can evoke memories of spicy oak or juicy plummy fruit that you can just about taste again if you take a moment. However we may forget that once upon a time, these international superstar grape varieties were just a handful of vines in a much larger sea of genetic diversity. Somewhere along the line, our viticultural forefathers noticed that some of these vines happened to make a bottle (or barrel or earthen jar) of wine that was just that much more delicious than the rest. Cuttings of these vines would have been taken, propagated and spread amongst farmers. Jump forward a couple of thousand years, and the first grapevine material began arriving in Australia. In some parts of the country the vines thrived and vineyards were established – the vineyards that gave birth to the Australian wine industry. These vines were, for the most part, varieties that we see on every bottle shop shelf, and after a couple of hundred years some of them were producing Australia’s iconic wines: Penfold’s Grange and Henshke’s Hill of Grace (both made from Shiraz), Leeuwin Estate’s Art Series Chardonnay, and the Vat 1 Semillon from Tyrell’s. The Hunter Valley is home to some of these wine pioneers, and we are starting to see ‘new’ names such as Vermentino, Fiano, Tempranillo and Sangiovese pop up in cellar doors.

Be medicines wise
T
he more medicines you take, the more difficult it is to remember important information about them. A “medicines list” (it could be paper based or computer based) is a useful way to keep a record of all important information about your medicines. The list might also remind you of questions to ask your doctor or pharmacist whenever you are prescribed a new medicine – questions such as: • What is the drug name and the brand name of this medicine? • How does this medicine work and how will I know if it is effective? • Is it important to take this medicine before or after food? • What side effects should I be aware of and what should I do if they occur? • What do I do if I miss a dose and if this happens too often, how can I better remember to take my tablets? • Will this medicine interact with other medicines I use? • Are all complementary medicines safe to take with this medicine, and • Can I drink alcohol while using this medicine? Your pharmacist can make you a personalised list of all your medicines with their names, the recommended dose and how they work. Pharmacies around Australia providing the Pharmaceutical Society’s Self Care health information can give you more details. For the nearest location, phone 1300 369 772 or log onto the website www.psa.org.au .

EDUCATION MATTERS

From the outback
’m writing this week’s column from the banks of the Nebine Creek, on Murra Murra Station in remote South-West Queensland. Formerly a sheep station, Murra Murra is an Indigenous Protected Area and is presently managed by its traditional custodians, the Kooma People. I am lucky to be visiting this Station as a volunteer travelling with Engineers Without Borders. Over the last few days I was also privileged to meet with Aboriginal elders from across Southern Queensland and Northern NSW. I have particularly enjoyed meeting with indigenous artists to discuss the benefits of art in both maintaining a connection to traditional culture and providing a source of income. We heard of the difficulties artists face gaining a fair price for their art. In 2007 Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri’s ‘Warlugulong’ was sold for $2.4 million. Of this large sum only $1200 is reported to have been paid to the artist. Luckily new laws entitle artists to 5% of the resale price of any artwork worth more than $1000. This law is particularly benefiting Aboriginal artists with 60% of royalties being returned to the artist. In our region the Newcastle Art Gallery proudly owns and hosts some of the finest Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, with a particular focus on promoting culture and history. I hope that once the current uncertainty over the gallery management is resolved (hopefully with Ron Ramsey maintaining his position) so that the gallery can continue to promote both indigenous art and Australian history.
S
Rules and freedom
chools are often described microcosms of society. They are caught between trying to develop children as individuals whilst still trying to instill discipline and acceptable behavior. It is important that rules are followed and that children are compliant when undertaking activities and classroom work. Learning these skills is key as in adulthood we need to have self-discipline in the workplace and work with others. Schools also have to ensure that children follow rules so that safety is in place and that deep understanding and learning can take place. The problem is when children assert their independence when teachers want the children to do something different. Children, of all ages, will challenge authority and push boundaries so that they can be innovative and develop a sense of self. Through this children can learn to negotiate and adapt behaviors. Parents need to support children and teachers to work together for the benefit of all, so that real learning can take place. It is important to make sure that teachers are fair in their discipline and use appropriate means to make children behave. Even with young children; who may not understand the need to move or modify behavior; there should be no grabbing or pulling. Only when there is an immediate danger, can teachers physically intervene. Australia has very clear legal rules in place, and when they are broken, it must be reported. Together, parents and teachers can work together to allow children to become individuals as part of a group, safely.

tanding proud in Lambton Park since 1913, Lambton Bowls, Sports and Recreation Club, better known to the locals at Lambton Bowling Club celebrates its centenary this year. From its birth in 1910, when a group of Lambton citizens approached Lambton Council with the idea of establishing a bowling club, Lambton Bowls, Sports and Recreation Club has grown into a sporting hub, home to Lambton Park Women’s Bowling Club, darts, cricket and water polo teams as well as its bowlers. The original ‘pavilion’ clubhouse was built in 1913. The current clubhouse was opened in 1960, but has undergone many facelifts and extensions over the years to accommodate the club’s growing patronage. Club treasurer, Don MacPherson, said today, the club is a favourite for local families. “It’s a family club and we want it that way,” Mr MacPherson said. “That’s what we really push for. “On a Friday night, families bring

their kids down for the raffle, they can sit wherever they like and feel comfortable.” The club has defied the odds to remain open whilst bowling clubs in neighbouring suburbs closed under increasing financial pressure and declining membership, thanks in part to an army of dedicated volunteers, many of whom are from the ladies bowling club, which made Lambton Bowling Club its home in 2003. Lambton Park Women’s Bowling Club member and director, Barbara O’Sullivan, said she was thrilled to be part of the club’s centenary celebrations. “I’m proud to be on the board in our hundredth year,” she said. “I’m proud to be on the board any time of year.” The club is currently in the middle of a bumper week of celebrations has already seen a two-day men’s tournament, ladies invitational. Celebrations will culminate this weekend with sponsors and supporters’ barefoot bowls evening on Friday, October 25 and a dinner dance following the ladies’ and men’s gala on Saturday. Mr MacPherson was confident that despite 100 years of history, the club would remain a fixture in Lambton Park for many years to come. “We’ll be here for a while yet.”

hile it certainly doesn’t hold a candle to the unabashed undergraduate hilarity of the original instalment in the franchise there is still plenty to like in this, the third ‘Hangover’ film. While it may rely on many of the tropes and set pieces that made the first instalment so successful, this, unlike many other sequels, executes this revisionism well. In the aftermath of the death of Alan’s (Zach Galifinakis) father, the wolfpack decide to take Alan to get treated for his mental issues. But, as is the case in with these things, everything quickly goes pear-shaped on the way to the hospital as the wolfpack is assaulted and Doug is kidnapped. Now they must find Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong, in another show stealing performance) again in order to surrender him to the gangster who kidnapped Doug in order to save him.
iven the title of Korn’s eleventh (really?) album, you’d think that there would be some modicum of musical adventurism here – maybe Johnathan Davis getting his inde folk on or some such. However, instead of any paradigm shifting musical goings on, what we have here is the same, or very similar numetal dreck that was offered up on their first album. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” is the order of the day here, with the familiar drone of soulless chuggachugga guitars wrapped lazily around splashes of electronic and insular “tortured artist” vocals. While this is certainly, in now way worse than anything Limp Bizkit haqve released since, whenever, this latest release from the kings of nu-metal offers very little in the way of originality or interest. Yawn.

fter a triumphant stint here, earlier this year, as part of the Soundwave festival, it seems that the Offspring’s love affair with Australia is far from over, with the US punk rock behemoth set to storm Sydney once again, this time as headliners of the Vans Warped tour this December. “Yeah it does feel like we were just down there, but then again, Australia is such an awesome place, and the crowds are just great, so it hardly feels like work for us,” guitarist Noodles (or Kevin Wasserman to the taxman) told TE down the line from his home in Huntington Beach, California. Anyone who caught their Soundwave show would know that they literally raised the roof with an all-killer-no-filler, high energy set that put a lot of the other bands, many years their junior, to shame. Noodles said that punters could expect a similar vibe at Vans Warped and maybe with a few surprises thrown in. “We’re not really sure what’s going in the set as yet but I think it’s going to be a pretty comprehensive run through of our career – it just depends on how much time they give us,” he laughed. “It can be frustrating when you get to where we are, to choose from so many songs, but we might be throwing in some stuff that we haven’t played in quite a while so it should be a fun show.” Considered, along with the likes of Green Day, as one of the best-selling punk rock acts of all time, The Offspring Continues on page 30

audiences (subsequent albums such as ‘Ixnay on the Hombre’ and ‘Americana’ proving they were no flash in the pan) he posited that it might be due to the fact that the band straddled a fine line between the socially “right-on” punk of the likes of Bad Religion and the more “let’s have a party” punk rock frivolity of bands like the Adolescents and the Dickies. “Yeah, man I have no clue,” he said. “I just fell in love with aggressive melodic music with that whole ‘hate the world’ thing going on and the stuff which had a more funny feel and we tried to combine the two in The Offspring. It’s hard to say, though. Maybe I’ve just been too close to it for so long, it’s kind of hard to put a finger on.” One thing is for sure, though, and that’s the fact that the influence of punk rock is so ingrained in the world of popular music that it can be felt, either musically, aesthetically or philosophically in most genres. – something that the Offspring definitely had a hand in. “Out of that success of the bands from the punk scene around 1994 was that a lot of other bands started incorporating aspects of punk into what they do,” he said. “Now you can kind of see punk influencing so many genres - maybe not directly but there is definitely a lot more of that punk rock “who gives a f***”attitude even in pop. I mean, you can definitely see that attitude in someone like Miley Cyrus. Yeah, Miley Cyrus is a little bit punk rock.” Now in their 20th year the band are showing no signs of slowing down with album number ten now in the works. “Yeah, man we’re having a blast at the moment – I’d say we’re playsing to the best crowds of our career,” he said. “We are definitely going to be doing a new album – we’ve recorded a couple of songs already. We aren’t with a label at the moment so everyone king of feels really libertated and excited about the future – a little scared but very liberated.” Catch the Offspring when they headline the Sydney leg of Vans Warped at the Bangaroo Precinct on Sunday, December 1 alongside Parkway Drive, Simple Plan, New Found Glory, Hatebreed, Tonight Alive and many more.

have sold more than 40 million albums world-wide. After releasing two blistering and well received albums, ‘The Offspring’ and ‘Ignition’, the band exceeded all expectations with their third album, ‘Smash’. Containing such classic tracks as ‘Self Esteem’ and ‘Come Out and Play’, ‘Smash’ along with Green Day’s ‘Dookie’ took punk rock from garages and small clubs to the heights of the Billboard charts. The album is now regarded, in some circles, as one of the most influential punk rock albums of all time. Noodles said that while no one in the band was expecting the album to explode like it did, the fact that they were no overnight sensations helped immeasurably in keeping their feet on the ground. “Yeah, we all thought it was a f***ing great record but there was no way any of us could have known just how big it was going to get – it still surprises me today,” he said. “Although, having done this for ten years before ‘Smash’ came out, once all of the success came it didn’t affect us – I mean we were the same band before ‘Smash’ as we were after and we didn’t change anything about the band whatsoever to get there.” Given that the band were one of the first to make the leap from relative Southern Californian punk rock obscurity to finding their faces on the covers of magazines and on MTV there was always going to be criticism from the insular punk rock scene that the band had sold out. However, Noodles said he always looked on this punk rock elitism as a source of bemusement. “Yeah all of that stuff was a little bit frustrating - I was kind of switching between laughing at them all to wanting to attack them,” he laughed. “It was kind of funny because a lot of these people crying “sell-out” were these new punk rock kids who had been around for, like, five minutes, while we had all been involved in the punk rock scene for twenty years – it was all pretty funny, really.” Noodles said that while he had no idea why the Offspring clicked so well with

ou might think that after 53 years tending the land, as both a mixed farmer and then a viticulturalist, that the world of stand-up comedy may be an odd career choice, but for Rod Gregory, aka The Old Fella it was the perfect fit. Gregory, who first came came to our attention after tickling the nation’s funnybone on the hit TV show ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ with his laconic and self-depreciating brand of humour, is heading to Wallsend in what seems

t seems as though the “difficult second album” syndrome that has plagued so many bands has passed Rockhampton-born outfit Busby Marou well and truly by, with their sophomore effort ‘Farewell To Fitzroy’ taking the gloriously nuanced folk pop and nimble storytelling, that was central to their debut, to the next level with a much larger and complete album, both in sound and scope. While originally known as a duo, Tom Busby and Jeremy Marou have fleshed out their sound with a full band on ‘Farewell to Fitzroy’ and Marou told TE that, given the band had evolved quite considerably since the duo days, the pair wanted the album to reflect this fact. “It is a lot different to the debut – it’s a lot fuller,” he said. “For us, it was all about the live sound, we didn’t want to be using heaps of overdubs and stuff like that, we just wanted it to be really raw and full- we spent a lot of time getting that formula right.” To help capture the live vibe, the band headed over to Nashville and enlisted the services of producer Brad Jones (Missy Higgins, Justin Townes Earle) and
Marou said, Jones’ playing background made proceedings that much easier. “He is a muso by trade – a bass player – so he was really good a t helping us in constructing the songs,” he said. “Also, and the big thing for us, was that he really knew how to record live. “I mean we weren’t even playing to a click track.” Aside from bringing in their touring band to flesh out their sound in the studio, the pair also enlisted the services of some “heavy friends”” to add even more musical gravitas to the album, including arguably Australia’s greatest songwriter Don Walker who co-wrote the track ‘Luck’’ with Busby and legendary Hawaiian kona guitarist and pedal steel player Al Perkins (Flying Burrito Brothers, Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Emmylou Harris). “Yeah working with Al was a massive buzz – I mean, he played on “Abby Road”,” Marou said. “It was really cool because he is very Christian so we were told that we weren’t allowed to swear while he was in the studio, but he just turned up, sat down and played some of the most beautiful slide I’ve ever heard – we was amazing.” Catch Busby Marou when they play at the Small Ballroom on Friday, November 8.
to be a never-ending tour. Gregory said he he fell into the game quite by accident. “After I had my third back operation my surgeon told me that I wouldn’t be able to lift more that three kilograms. “So I ended up enrolling in a tenweek comedy course. “The guy running it said I should give stand-up a crack and the first time I did I never felt more alive.” Catch The Old Fella at Wallsend Diggers on Sunday, October 27.

aving three young children, these days I find myself judging a restaurant, firstly by their kids’ menu then by the level of entertainment they can offer to maintain parents’ sanity. The new Wild Brumby Pokolbin restaurant passes with flying colours. The added bonus here is a limousine pick-up and drop-off service for dinner bookings within the Pokolbin area. The children were intrigued when told that a “big car” would be arriving to take us to dinner. The service is friendly and personal from the moment you walk in. Pencils and colouring-in paper are on the table before you know it. Activities such as the oversized chess set in the garden to the karaoke room, ensured the kids made only fleeting visits back to our table to devour their fish and chips, nachos and spaghetti. They were also well pleased with their three flavours of ice cream with marshmallows and sprinkles. I chose the Hunter scotch fillet steak from the Hot Rock Lava Stone selection. The volcanic lava stone is heated to 440 degrees for you to cook your meal to your liking. The steak was top-quality, extremely tender and was served with smashed potato, corn on the cob and beans. There were also two delicious dipping sauces – garlic soy and a spicy tomato salsa. My wife chose the half-rack of twicecooked American-style pork spare ribs in a spicy barbecue and plum marinade and thoroughly enjoyed the generous, tender serving. We were also offered a taste of each of the six flavoured schnapps on offer: sour apple, pink lady apple, mango, beach, butterscotch and devil’s tongue – containing chilli. Accommodation is available with a feature being rooms in many different themes such as the Love Boat, Casablanca, Moulin Rouge and French and Italian bordellos. Live entertainment from 5pm in the tranquil garden setting tops off a great evening and it’s clear this family-friendly restaurant will be a welcome addition to the vineyards dining scene.

here are not many bands that manage to consistently cram as much fun into their music videos as high energy power-poppers Bluejuice. Whether it’s posing as religious zealots in Pitt Street in the video for their breakthrough track, ‘Vitriol’, taking on competitive jump-ropers for ‘Broken Leg’ or pashing a granny in ‘Act Yr Age’, the Sydneysiders sure know how to make an entertaining clip and their latest soulinfluenced offering, ‘SOS’ is no different. The band’s most recent visual foray finds Jake Stone, Stavros Yiannoukas and Jamie Cibej ridding the world of douchebags in a ‘Ghostbusters’esque adventure that’s a relative who’s-who Australian media industry douchebaggery (see Merrick Watts, triple j’s Tom and Alex and the Australian Idol host formerly known as Andrew G, Osher Günsberg). The original concept for the video came from music video director, Sam Bennet, who worked with the band on most of their previous videos, but with Bennet now LA-based and a limited budget the band enlisted Sparkadia
bassist Nick Rabone and his partner Christian Heinrich to pull the idea together. “We came up with the idea of a ‘Ghostbusters’ ripoff and we really liked the idea of busting assholes but then turning into assholes and having to bust ourselves,” Stone told TE. “For Bluejuice fun videos are just the way we have to do things.” While singles are normally a likely indication that an album is in the works, Stone said a new Bluejuice record was still a way off. “We sort of agreed that we wouldn’t make a record for a least a little while because it took so long to do ‘Company’ and it was such a big effort,” he said. “We’re definitely going to put out singles. “There’s one called ‘Astronaut’ that will come out next and I actually wrote that when I was about 21, so it’s a very old song.” Stone said ‘Astronaut’ started life as a ballad and has since grown into a garagey, UK funk, soul sounding track that’s “a little bit Rick Astley”, but he said he still wasn’t sure what the finished product would sound like. Catch Bluejuice on the Fat as Butter Festival lineup at Camp Shortland this Saturday, October 26.

fter a highly successful run with their punk rock heroes, the Descendents, earlier this year, seminal Australian pop punk outfit Bodyjar are back with another sharp and hook laden slab of pop punk, ‘Role Models’. It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything from Bodyjar, with the band calling it quits in 2009 (a couple of oneoff reunion shows notwithstanding) and frontman Cameron Baines told TE that the time was definitely right for the band to throw some more music into the ether. “I guess we just got to the point where we decided that there was no way we could make another album,” he said. “We had basically spent too much time on the treadmill and we were burnt out – which tends to happen after doing this for
15 years. “Anyway, when the opportunity came for us to tour with the Descendents, it was just too good to pass up – those guys are like my favourite f***king band in the whole world. I remember writing to Bill Stevenson [who also produced Bodyjar’s first album] when I was a kid and everything so it was great to have the opportunity to play with them.” Listening to ‘Role Models’ it is abundantly clear that this is a band that isn’t just another band going through the motions – this is a passionate and finely crafted record that fully deserves to stand alongside such earlier efforts as ‘How it Works’ (featuring the smash hit ‘Not The Same’), ‘No Touch Red’ and ‘Rimshot’. The band enlisted the services of Shihad drummer Tom Larkin to produce the record, who has worked with the likes of The Getaway Plan, Fur Patrol and Calling All Cars and Baines said that Larkin was invaluable in whipping the songs into shape. “Generally, all of the basics of the songs were written and demoed before we started and once Tom came on board we spent, like, a solid week in the studio just playing the songs while Tom sat in the control room just listening. He is just so f***ing awesome at arrangements and basically trimming the fat.” Now that the album is out and doing it’s things can we expect to see Bodyjar hammering the nation’s highways for the foreseeable future? “I honestly think that we’re going to keep shows to a minimum and keep things a little bit more sporadic,” he said. “There’s talk of some shows in Japan and Brazil but we’re pretty keen to play it by ear – let’s see what happens.” Catch Bodyjar when they kick off their ‘Role Models’ tour at the Cambridge Hotel on Thursday, October 31 alongside Luca Brasi.

lright hep cats and kittens, hang on to your hats because, this Halloween, Canada’s psychobilly king Evil Elvis will be blowing the doors off the Wickham Park Hotel. This will be Elvis’ fourth trip down under and he told TE that he couldn;t wait to bring his brooding rock and roll stylings back Down Under. “Hell yes,” he told TE. “I’ve been so lucky to have been able to come to Australia where I have my biggest audiences so far – I love the country and the best music fans in the world.” After first stepping onstage at age 17 with Canadian punk outfit The Assassins in 1979, Elvis (otherwise known as KC Carlisle) has been flying the punk rock and rockabilly flag ever since in myriad bands before stepping out on his own in 1999. There’s no doubt that rockabilly and all of its associated subgenres (punkabilly, psychobilly, horrorbilly et al) have enjoyed quite a resurgence, especially in Australia over the past decade and Elvis said much of this was due to the sense of humour inherent in the music. “I think your country in particular have
embraced the genre more than any other countries,” he said. “Musically it’s perfect – it has melody and also speed. If it’s done right, a little bit of danger, too. All music has been done before and we psycho fans just understand that a bit more than other simpletons. We take what has been done before and add what we want to make it ours. Plus, the sense of humour in psychobilly is awesome.” With definite nods to the likes of The Cramps and Reverend Horton Heat, Evil Elvis is all about tubthumping double bass, high octane riffs and oodles of rock and roll swagger from the regal frontman. Elvis said that punters could expect nothing less than a band giving it their all when they hit the stage. “I’ve been doin’ this singer thing for over 30 years now and I’’ve gained a reputation as one of – if not THE – best frontmen in my country. They don’t call me Evil Elvis for nothing.” Catch Evil Elvis at the Wickham Park Hotel on Thursday, October 31.

“Hyundai Motor’s HTRAC system has secured best-in-class durability and driving performance through strict tests carried out in various locations worldwide, including the famed Nürburgring in Germany, the Yeongam F1 circuit in Korea and in severe winter tests in Europe,” said Woong-Chul Yang, Vice Chairman and head of Hyundai Motor Group’s R&D Centre. “We expect our customers to feel worldclass safety and driving performance in the all-new Genesis equipped with the HTRAC system.” Unlike mechanical AWD system with limited torque split between front and rear wheels, Hyundai’s HTRAC system allows drivers to select driving modes for a sophisticated and tailored driving experience.

yundai Motor Company, South Korea’s largest automaker, have announced that its ‘HTRAC’ all-wheel drive system will be made available for the first time on the all-new Genesis, the second generation of Hyundai’s first premium rear-wheel drive sedan, set to make its world debut in its home market later this year. The ‘H’ stands for ‘Hyundai’ indicating its brand heritage, and ‘TRAC’ is a shortened form of the word ‘Traction,’ which represents technical attributes of the all-wheel drive system. The advanced HTRAC system electronically controls torque split between the front and rear axles depending on road and driving conditions, offering greater stability on slippery roads and in corners.

ewcastle’s Aaron Royle has become the city’s latest sporting champion by winning the ITU world under-23 triathlon grand final in Auckland. Royle, a 22-year-old from Maryland, outsprinted Spain’s Fernando Alarza and Great Britain’s Thomas Bishop in a thrilling finish to win the gold medal by just three seconds. Royle posted a winning time of 1 hour 57.17 minutes. The No.4 seed grabbed the lead with a sensational swim leg of 17.26 mins. He completed the bike leg in 1.06:33 and the run in 31.39. After his great success, Aaron said ”I’m over the moon. I hadn’t raced for about four weeks, but my training indicates I’m fitter than I’ve ever been and that translated into a good race.” Royle said he was weighing up whether to compete at the Nepean Triathlon on October 28 but was ready for a monthlong hiatus, during which time his most strenuous exercise would be a daily game of golf. “For me personally, I think the only way I can keep going so long and training so hard is to have about four to six weeks off in October and November,” he said. “We start training again around November 28 and our first major race isn’t until April, so we have plenty of time to get back into shape. The break helps you come back refreshed.”

Paul Monforte
N
ewcastle Jets coach Gary van Egmond is calling for greater effort and execution from his side after a 0-0 draw with Perth Glory at Hunter Stadium on Sunday. The Jets remain the only team yet to score a goal after two rounds of the A-League, much to the frustration of van Egmond. “We created a number of opportunities and we didn’t take them unfortunately,” van Egmond said. “That is encouraging, but still I thought the football was poor, the way in which we played. “Too many times we didn’t look for the right solution. People looked nervous. Not just us, but also them. “It looked to me like a game both teams didn’t want to lose rather than a team wanting to win. “It was a warm day, but you have to have that stronger mentality. I’m not going to say all the players were in that boat, but there were a few in there that I thought didn’t put their hand up and have a real dig”. This week, the Jets are off across the Tasman to play the Wellington Phoenix in Napier on Sunday afternoon. The Phoenix are also seeking their first win of the season after a 2-1 loss at home to the Brisbane Roar and a 1-1 draw with the Western Sydney Warriors in Parramatta on Sunday. Sunday’s match gets underway at 3pm.
