T

he State government has promised Novocastrians continued access to popular landmarks around the Port of Newcastle, after Newcastle City Councillor Tim Crakanthorp raised concerns that the Stockton and Nobbys breakwalls, as well as nearby walking tracks and beaches, could be closed to the public once the port is sold. NSW Minister for Roads and Ports, Duncan Gay, had said earlier this month that Nobbys Head would be excluded from the 98-year lease to ensure ongoing public access to the site. However, Cr Crakanthorp, who recently nominated for reselection for the seat of Newcastle in the 2015 State election, said Newcastle residents needed to be assured they would be able to access popular walking spots and historic sites around the port once a new lessee is appointed in the new year. “This is about protecting access to our public amenities and wonderful natural assets for the people of Newcastle and for visitors who come here to walk along our port and see our beautiful beaches,” he said. “The new lessee will effectively own these break-

NSW Treasurer, Mike Baird, says Newcastle residents will still be able to walk along the breakwall under the port’s new lease walls for the next 98 years and we need to know that they will remain accessible to the public.” In a statement to the Post, NSW Treasurer, Mike Baird, affirmed the Government’s commitment to maintaining public access to the port, insisting that the breakwalls would remain open to the community. “In regards to the Nobbys Head and Stockton breakwalls, the Government’s intention is that these assets will be maintained by the lessee, but

with provisions in the agreement for ongoing public access,” he said. “There will be no change to recreational use of the waterways as a result of the transaction.” Access to beaches and walking tracks around the port will not be affected by the lease. The sale of the port is expected to be finalised by mid-2014, with Newcastle tipped to receive $340 million of the estimated $700 million sale price.

Tony, please can you tread warily for the sake of our country I don’t often write about federal politics in this column because, for the most part, I find it incredibly boring. But I just hope Tony Abbot knows what he is doing with his response to Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhyono after the phone tapping scandal. Of course we don’t want to be seen to be collapsing in a heap and grovelling to Indonesia, but surely the best way to smooth things over would be to apologise and assure our neighbours that it won’t happen again. To be fair, Mr Abbott was not the Prime Minister at the time and said in question time last week: “All governments gather information and all governments know that every other government gathers information” That may well be the case, however an immediate response, even if it stopped short of using the word ‘sorry’ could well have cooled the situation. Now, we have this awkward lack of trust that will take some time to repair. I’m sure Australians would be feeling the same anger had the roles been reversed and Indonesia was caught spying on our politicians. I’m probably extremely naive in the inner workings of international relations, but I’ve always found a certain comfort in Australia being the “good guys”. fter more than 20 years sharing the airwaves on weekday mornings, beloved KOFM breakfast show duo, David Collins and Tanya Wilks, better known to listeners as David and Tanya, will say their final farewell on Friday with a massive show broadcast live from Wests New Lambton. From humble beginnings at 2HD in 1991 as the region’s only male/female radio duo, the pair will finish their enduring partnership at KOFM on a high, recently clocking up their fiftieth number one result in the local radio ratings and going out with the title of Australian radio’s longestrunning on-air team. Reflecting on their 22 years on-air, Mr Collins and Ms Wilks told the Post they will miss their special connection with listeners most.

The toilet seat that changed our lives When returned serviceman George Brown recently came across an ad for a Bidet toilet seat, he thought from the things he was reading, that this could quite possibly be the answer to his prayers. From the time he had spent in Japan and Korea on rest and recuperation from active service in Vietnam, and on subsequent visits with his wife Caroline, he knew that there were some great toilet seats available that provided so many more features than those generally found in Australia. He felt that with some of the medical conditions he’d long experienced, including hemorrhoids and some personal issues for Caroline, the fact the Bidet toilet seat could wash and dry them both without the need for toilet paper, would prove very benecial and provide some much needed relief and peace of mind. Making some initial inquiries, George and Caroline were amazed to see the features that were now available. Apart from comfort and health factors, the warm seat, warm water wash, and a warm air

dryer could all be operated and adjusted via a simple-to-use remote control unit. The BIDET SHOP® offered to do an in-home-demo for him as he found it difcult to come into the store. Late that week the helpful man from The BIDET SHOP® arrived at his home, and demonstrated the Bidet. After some discussion together, George and Caroline purchased a Bidet toilet seat and The BIDET SHOP® installed it the same day. George feels the Bidet toilet seat is one of the best investments he and his wife have made for their personal health and hygiene. Now after years of toileting problems, neither of them nds going to the loo an issue. Their only regret was that they hadn’t seen the Bidet toilet seat sooner! *For more information The BIDET SHOP® 8005 5730 (local) or 1800 243 387 (freecall) *Conditions apply

Upcoming free information nights presented by Turnbull Hill Lawyers... Alan Wright a Law Society Accredited Family Law Specialist will be conducting a free information night on Thursday, 12 December from 6pm to 7.30pm, to explain to you “who gets what” property when you separate from your partner. Because of his experience in Family Law, Alan understands the pressures of breaking up and will point out some of the common problems in Family Law property disputes and how to avoid them. He’ll give you tips to help you take control so you can get on with your life, and he’ll discuss how your entitlement is worked out. Alan will also talk about: • the Superannuation Laws and how superannuation is now treated as property; • how superannuation is now split; • whether you get more property if the children are living with you; • what happens if you owned a lot of assets in your own name before your marriage; • what happens if you have a business, etc.

“It’s so nice when you have people who come up to us and say, ‘We love listening to the show.’ [The show] means a lot to people,” Mr Collins said. “That’s one of the most pleasing things about the job because it means it’s not just a job but you’re part of the listeners everyday lives and you feel privileged to be part of that.” The final David and Tanya breakfast show will be a tear jerker for listeners and hosts alike, but Ms Wilks revealed there have already been some emotional moments in the studio. “They pop up when you least expect it,” she said. “A song gets played, something is triggered, I look over and see his little Arsenal tracksuits and I think, ‘I’m going to miss that,’” “But we’re family more than work colleagues so whilst we may not be on the air together after [this] Friday, come Friday night he will be back at my place for dinner – I can’t get rid of him that easily.” David and Tanya’s final show will air this Friday, November 29, between 5:30am and 9am on 102.9 KOFM. Wilks will return to the KOFM breakfast time-slot in 2014 with a new yet to be announced co-host, while Collins will pursue new opportunities at the station in sports broadcasting.

COLUMN

There's no such thing as a boring nude story Recently some of my younger colleagues at work attended a show at the Civic Theatre in Newcastle and the morning after giggled their way through a critique of the performance. They didn’t evaluate the whole show, mind you, just the nudie bits. Apparently this particular production featured fullfrontal male nudity and whilst that may only have taken up a tiny portion of the show’s duration (no disrespect meant to the male member of the ensemble there) it was most definitely the bit they fussed over. This conversation took me back to the first time I saw nudity on stage and again, it was the Civic, but this time the show was ‘Steaming’. Chances are a lot of you are nodding your heads because you too have seen one of the many touring tributes to this spectacle which centres around the patrons of a female bathhouse. No men, but loads of women, all shapes, all sizes, lounging about in the nude or, for a lucky few, a strategically placed towel. I can’t recall the exact storyline was but the image of one of the larger ladies leaping

up completely starkers and then proceeding to jump rope for an entire scene is forever emblazoned in my memory. It was at that point I wished that I hadn’t forked out for premium seats. I think a few rows back would have sufficed and been less wet poor girl worked up an awful sweat. It’s one thing to be sweat upon but another level entirely when its sweat from a naked body. Now, it has to be said, nakedness is the body’s most natural state but ever since Adam & Eve declared the fig leaf the must have accessory of the day, it has fascinated, titillated, disgusted and amused us. We love a good naked story. Ever been caught naked, ever caught someone else naked? You can dine out on those lascivious tales forever. Streakers, protestors, advertising gurus and artists use nudity to make statements, draw attention, seek fame and sell a product. Even Kevin Rudd couldn’t tender his tearful resignation without Joe Hockey telling the nation how they shared a ‘seminaked moment’. Joe obviously knew working the words

‘semi-naked’ into his farewell speech would garner far greater attention than simply saying ‘Kev & I took a swim in our boardies’...no story there. After a few fully clothed decades on this earth I have decided being naked is something you’re supremely comfortable doing or you're not. I have belonged to both clubs and have found gravity and experience (a fancy term for getting older) the culprits behind my changing membership. Yes, it’s incredibly empowering to feel at ease in your own bare skin and we definitely want our young girls and boys growing up body confident but there’s a huge line in the sand. Speaking of which the only stretch of sand in the Hunter where you can legally get your kit off without fear of fine or reprisal is Samurai Beach at Anna Bay. So ... after all that...as we face summer head on, there’s only one burning question I have left....who takes a skipping rope into a bathhouse????? Cheers Tanya

Startling research reveals confusion around alcohol and pregnancy

Amelia Parrott @amelia_parrott

E

ight in 10 Australian women drink alcohol during pregnancy. That is the startling claim laid out in a study of almost 2000 pregnant Australian women between the ages of 22 and 37 as part of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health, a collaboration between the University of Newcastle and the University of Queensland. The study followed female participants for nearly a decade and revealed confusion among expecting mothers concerning the acceptable amount of alcohol one can consume during pregnancy. In 1992 the National Health and Medical research Council recommended that pregnant women abstain from drinking, however the guidelines changed in 2001 to allow light drinking. In 2009 they were reverted back to the

current no-alcohol policy. Hunter Medical Research Institute research academic, Amy Anderson, of the University of Newcastle, put the confusion amongst women down to these changes. “The majority of our cohort would be considered complaint if we were looking at the 2001 recommendations but the current guidelines advise abstaining because we don’t know what a safe level of consumption is,” she said. She added that most the women who admitted to drinking during their pregnancy drank small amounts. “We are mostly talking low-level alcohol consumption of one or two drinks at a time and all were drinkers prior to pregnancy – the figures are closer to 70 per cent when you add the non-drinkers.” East Maitland residents, Loren Harle, who is 24 weeks pregnant with her second child, and her partner Joshua Button, were astounded by the statistic. Miss Harle, a midwifery student, said while her and her partner know of other women who have drank and smoked whilst pregnant, she has abstained from alcohol during both her pregnancies. “It’s not even something you should have to think about – you just don’t drink when you’re pregnant," she said.

Australians who are blind or have low vision are almost four times more likely to be unemployed than the general population. But, thanks to an innovative partnership with Vision Australia, one of the world’s largest coal handling operations, Port Waratah Coal Services is making a big difference to Hunter job seekers. Deb White was born blind, and for the past three years she has struggled to find meaningful paid employment in the Hunter area despite having applied for numerous positions. Over the last six months she has been employed by Port Waratah in a program designed to provide essential work expe-

rience to people living with vision impairments. “This placement has helped me to develop new skills that will improve my chance of finding work," Ms White said. "It has broadened my horizons and increased my confidence." In the initial weeks of the placement Deb worked closely with Support Officer, Georgina Wicklein. She was also supported by Vision Australia’s Employment Services who provided expert advice about simple workplace modifications and adaptive technologies such as talking software. “It is phenomenal what technology enables her to achieve," Ms Wicklein said.

unter Valley Grammar student, Mitchell McColl, has narrowly missed out on claiming the top prize in the statewide Year 11 Business Plan Challenge. Mr McColl was one of four finalists to present a business plan to local business leaders at the University of Newcastle’s City Campus earlier this month, competing for a share in cash and scholarships totalling $16,500.

The Year 11 business studies student presented a 15-minute-long plan for FroYo-2Go, a local product that offers various flavours of frozen yoghurt accompanied by assorts toppings and mix ins for consumers in a fast-paced self-serve environment that is a healthier alternative to ice cream. Although Mr McColl failed to take home the first place gong, he did receive $1000 and a $500 for his school as a runner-up. The challenge was ultimately won by Ben Robinson, a musician and business studies student from Port Macquarie, who presented a plan for a mobile recording studio.

Claydon calls on government to fund local infrastructure projects

ewcastle MP, Sharon Claydon, has used her inaugural parliamentary speech to call on Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, to commit to funding the duplication of the Tourle Street Bridge between Mayfield and Kooragang Island. Addressing MPs in Canberra last Tuesday, Ms Claydon said she expected funds to be released to duplicate the bridge and its approaches, as outlined by the former Labor Government. “Under a Labor government, Newcastle was to benefit from a much-needed infrastructure project – the duplication of the Tourle Street Bridge to ease traffic congestion between the city and our airport and major industrial areas,” she said. “The federal Labor government’s contribution of $52 million was fully funded in

the 2013-2014 federal budgets under the National Building Program. “If Prime Minister Abbott wants to be remembered as the infrastructure Prime Minister, I expect this funding will be released, as budgeted for, so the project can proceed without issue. Deputy Prime Minister, Warren Truss, previously stated that all infrastructure projects funded by the previous government that have not yet been contracted would be reviewed by the Abbott Government. Ms Claydon also used her speech to criticise the State Government’s sale of the Port of Newcastle and the share of funds Newcastle would receive from the sale. “The 99-year lease of the world’s busiest coal terminal will bring in upwards of $700 million, of which the State government plans to generously invest less that half – just $340 million – in the Newcastle area. “Our assets are being stripped, our revenue stream is being removed and we are meant to be happy to receive the crumbs left under the table.” $340 million from the sale of the port will be injected into the revitalisation of the Newcastle CBD, including the construction of the proposed light rail line.

rmed with garbage bags, a small but strong army of volunteers took to the charred bushland surrounding Catherine Hill Bay last weekend, cleaning up litter left behind when bushfires tore through the area last month. 28 volunteers collected hundreds of discarded bottles and rubbish from the headland south of the jetty and Moonee Beach. Event organiser, Damien Hawcroft, said he was stunned by the amount of rubbish the fires uncovered so decided to seek help from local organisations to help him clean up the mess. “It’s a wasteland of bottles – it’s just tragic,” he said of the bushland around the township. “We would have collected two tonnes of bottles within three hours on Sunday morning and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.” “If there is a positive in the bushfires it’s that it allowed us to see the extent of the littering problem and given us once in 100 year opportunity to act.”

The event was a collaboration between the Catherine Hill Bay Progress Association and Lake Macquarie City Council, through its Eco Angels program. Lake Macquarie City Council manager sustainability, Alice Howe, said Council was happy to help united the Catherine Hill Bay community as they move on from the recent fires. “The recent bushfires exposed large amounts of litter dispersed through native bushland,” she said. “The Catherine Hill Bay Progress Association approached Council has part of our Eco Angels program, so they could bring the community together to clean up these areas and continue the recovery effort for this town.” Mr Hawcroft said he planned to speak to National Parks and Wildlife and Lake Macquarie City Council to organise more clean up events in the future and devise a plan to solve the problem of motorists discarding bottles on the roadside around Catherine Hill Bay. He hoped engaging the wider community in clean up events would help those littering take responsibility for their actions.

NEWCASTLE MATTERS

Event spotlight for city As a proud Novocastrian I am very excited that Newcastle won the rights to host the first ever Special Olympics 2013 Asia Pacific Games with competition set to kick off next Monday. More than 2,000 athletes from 32 countries plus officials, Newcastle supporters, spectators and volunteers will start arriving in our City Council city on Thursday and with many being part of the spectacular Lord Mayor Opening Ceremony on Sunday 1 December. all council matters: The Opening Ceremony features the who’s who of Australian newcastle.nsw.gov.au music including Marcia Hines, Anthony Callea, Iva Davies, The McClymonts, Doug Parkinson and Marina Prior. Aside from these fantastic performers there will also be performers from Newcastle and the Hunter, lighting of the Games cauldron as the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run reaches the stadium, reciting of the Athletes’ Oath and of course the official opening. I will be joining the many thousands of people who have already secured their tickets and I hope lots of Novocastrians get behind the Opening Ceremony so we can give all the visitors to than 2,000 athletes from 32 our city a warm welcome. There is also a private welcome event for athletes and their countries plus families at Blackbutt’s Richley Reserve on Saturday 29 Novemofficials and ber which means this section of the reserve will be closed to supporters the general public for the day, although the Carnley Avenue entrance will be open as normal.

To

enrich the quality of life our City can offer its residents

This week, Council will release two important publications for the year, our Annual Report for 2012/2013 and the latest edition of our community magazine, Your City. These two publications ensure Council’s ongoing accountability to our community about our performance. Both publications report on the steps Council has taken towards the vision outlined in our Community Strategic Plan, to enrich the quality of life our City can offer its residents and all who visit and do business here. The strength of our planning has enabled us to address significant financial challenges in recent years, and I am pleased to report that in the first year of our seven-year rate variation, Council has maintained services and made improvements across the City, while returning a modest operating surplus. We have also moved to a new level of community engagement to extend our shared, long-term vision for the City and get down to detail regarding the design of our towns, streetscapes and recreational facilities. This has led to the adoption of the Lifestyle 2030 strategy, the Community Strategic Plan 2013-2023 and the Local Environment Plan 2013, as well as the Belmont Master Plan. Keep an eye out for the Your City magazine in your letterbox, or go to www.lakemac.com. au/annualreport. I also encourage you to think of someone who has done outstanding work for our community. Nominations for the Lake Macquarie Australia Day Awards close on 2 December. For information and forms, visit www.lakemac. com.au/ausawards or call Council on 4921 0333.

Speers Point fun day, December 2 Lake Macquarie City Council in conjunction with Newcastle City Council and Disability Network Hunter Inc. will be hosting a fun day to celebrate International Day of People with a Disability on Monday 2 December from 10am to 2pm. Council’s Manager Community Planning, John Ferguson, is inviting everyone to come along to Speers Point Park and join in the fun. “International Day of People with a Disability is designated by the United Nations as a time to celebrate and recognise the achievements, contributions and abilities of people with a disability,” Mr Ferguson said.

“This year’s campaign, Don’t DIS my Ability, celebrates the diversity and ability of people with a disability. “Our fun day will have information stalls, hands-on activities such as arts and crafts, local entertainment performed by schools and community groups, and a free sausage sizzle provided by Lions Club volunteers.” Council is encouraging everyone to join in the fun and to wear fancy dress there will be prizes awarded for the best dressed! The 2013 theme for International Day of People with Disability is ‘Break barriers, open doors: for an inclusive society for all’.

Council needs info on dumping

Newcastle’s Australia Day celebrations are shaping up to be our best yet with the Australia Day National Maritime Festival set to bring the harbour and foreshore area to life on Sunday 26 January 2014. At the launch on Friday, Tourism and Eco-

nomic Development Manager Jan Ross put the call out to businesses to get on board with the celebrations. “Three years ago, The City of Newcastle joined forces with the Newcastle Maritime Centre to build upon what was a successful and historic

community event in the National Maritime Festival. By moving this event to hold it on Australia Day – it not only meant a strong partnership to deliver the event with more funding but to truly put the focus on Newcastle and its strong maritime heritage.”

Lake Macquarie City Council is seeking information from the community regarding an illegal dumping site found recently in Dora Creek. Council rangers discovered a large amount of covered asbestos illegally dumped on Hawkmount Road, Dora Creek after a member of the community reported the suspicious activity. Council’s Manager Waste, Environment and Rangers, Keith Stevenson, is asking for others who may have information about the dumping to come forward. “Reports from the community play a vital role in helping us find and prosecute illegal dumpers,” Mr Stevenson said. “It is important for anyone with information regarding this dumping, or any other act of illegal dumping, to contact Council on 4921 0333. “Council wants to send a clear message that illegal rubbish dumping will not be tolerated and every effort will be made to catch offenders.

ocal Whovians marked a milestone event this weekend, with popular sci-fi series, Doctor Who celebrating its fiftieth anniversary. Avid Doctor Who fans gathered at special events throughout the Hunter, including Doctor Who screenings at local cinemas and a day of Tim Lord-themed activities at the Newcastle Museum. Raymond Terrace resident Lauren Coghlan was one of millions of Doctor Who fans worldwide who dressed up as their favourite character to mark the occasion. Although a relatively recent follower of the series, Miss Coghlan said she had definitely caught the Doctor Who bug. “I love that everything connects,” she said of the show. “I love that it’s not just good guys and bad guys, it has back stories and characters you

Doctor Who first aired on the BBC in 1963. In , the ABC first broadcast the program in 1965. The series follows the adventures of the Doctor, a time-travelling humanoid alien, as he explores the universe with an ever changing array of companions.

The Bus will be visiting Charlestown, giving local small businesses operators the chance to get personalised advice from business experts on 2 December. “The Small Biz Bus is one of the key initiatives the NSW Government has put in place to ensure the ongoing viability of small business in the State. I encourage small business operators to take advantage of the practical, localised support the Bus offers,” NSW Minister for Small Business, Katrina Hodgkinson said. Small business owners can access the support of expert advisers on the Small Biz Bus at no cost to them. “It’s really important for small business operators to take a step back occasionally to reassess what they are doing and think about where they are heading," NSW Small Business Commissioner, Yasmin King, said. "An experienced business advisor can really assist with this process,” The Bus will be at: Monday 2 December, Pearson St (mall entrance), Charlestown, from 9am to 3pm. Back in the air after frightening flight Battered but not beatean by turbulent trip from Melbourne to Sydney Amelia Parrott

Blackalls Park man and his guide dog have returned to the air for the first time, after a mid-flight incident left them battered and

bruised. Earlier this month, James Bennett was travelling from Melbourne to Sydney for work with his guide dog, Brogan, when the plane they were travelling in encountered turbulence as a result of severe weather conditions. Mr Bennett suffered two broken ribs during the incident, which required an overnight stay in hospital, while Brogan hit the ceiling of the aircraft and continues to experience nightmares as a result. Undeterred and both eager to get back to work, just 10 days later the pair were back in the air. Mr Bennett, who has been completely blind since 2004, said getting on a plane again seemed a lot easy for his guide dog than it was for him. “While I’m not afraid

Scary thought for the future

Getting ready for Christmas

Know your own skin

As you wipe down your bench with that antibacterial wipe, take the antibiotics you have for the runny nose and cut into the steak that’s from a feedlot cow that was kept in such substandard conditions they pumped it full of antibiotics constantly just to keep it from dying, have a read of this. According to an international group of experts, the world faces “unimaginable setbacks” unless it tackles the growing threat of resistance to antibiotics. Antibiotic resistance happens when bacteria evolve mechanisms to withstand the drugs that are used to fight infection. Lead author Professor Otto Cars, of Uppsala University in Sweden, said: “The causes of antibiotic resistance are complex and include human behaviour at many levels of society”. “The consequences aff ect everybody in the world. Within just a few years, we might be faced with unimaginable setbacks – medically, socially, and economically – unless real and unprecedented global coordinated actions to transform the way antibiotics are regulated and developed are taken immediately.” Recent decades have seen vast increases in the use of antibiotics across medicine and agriculture, but the scientists argue that without adequate regulatory controls and better patient awareness, the huge global surge in antibiotic resistance will continue.

Deciding to cook Christmas lunch can seem like a good idea at the time, however your day can quickly turn into a festive stocking filled with stress without a little prior planning. So here are some quick tips from the commercial kitchen to make cooking a family Christmas lunch easy and enjoyable. Tip one: Limit your menu items to reduce your preparation. If your heart is set on a large variety of delights, then outsource items to your family members and friends to bring along. Otherwise you will be creating far too much work for yourself. Tip two: Prepare as much as possible ahead of time. Salads and sides can be made the day before, just leave the ingredients separate to prevent wilting. Vegetables can be cut and washed the day before also, ready to be thrown in with the roast. Desserts like trifle and Pavlova hold well in the fridge overnight, just leave the garnishing of fruit until the actual day. These “ten minutes here and fifteen minutes there” that are saved preparing the day before all add up to an enjoyable Christmas day. Tip three: Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Get the whole family involved in the preparation. The kitchen should be a communal place where the whole family comes together. So pry the kids away from the computer and force them to peel some potatoes and slice some onions. They will thank you for it in years to come.

Skin cancer is far and away the most common cancer in Australia with melanoma the most deadly. It’s important to get to know your own skin and identify the most serious aspects of sun damage. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you have doubts about any change in skin appearance. And check out the website www.knowyourownskin.com. au. You can get more information there on how to check your own skin and sign up for a free “Know Your Own Skin” kit. As well as assessing current skin damage, prevention of future damage is still important. The use of sunscreens is just one prevention strategy; and it’s now well recognised that they are classified according to the level of protection from sunburn they provide. This is promoted on labels by way of the Sun Protection Factor or so-called SPF rating. Until last year the maximum SPF rating permitted to be advertised in Australia was 30+, but now the Therapeutic Goods Administration has authorised the display of an SPF rating of up to 50+. Get more advice on choosing the most appropriate sunscreen and generally how to stay sun smart this summer, from pharmacies providing the Pharmaceutical Society’s Self Care health information. Phone 1300 369 772 for the location of your nearest Self Care pharmacy or at www.psa.org.au and click “Self Care” then “Find a Self Care Pharmacy”.

Animal House Thursday, 9.20pm • Seven Two Directed by John Landis (‘An American Werewolf in London’) this riotous comedy could arguably be John Belushi’s finest moment outside of ‘The Blues Brothers’ and is still as hilarious after more than 30 years. Chock-a-block full of undergraduate humour, ‘Animal House’ still stands as the king of risqué comedies from the late 70s and early 80s that includes the likes of ‘Porky’s’ and ‘Caddyshack’. After watching Belushi’s brilliant turn, you’ll see where Jack Black gets most of his comedic juice. If you’re a fan of 80s pop, then you are going to be in hog heaven when one of the queens of the genre, Belinda Carlisle, hits Sydney alongside homegrown heroes 1927. Carlisle’s rise to fame began when she stepped onstage with The Go Gos in 1978 who went on to record a swag of hits such as ‘Our Lips are Sealed’ and ‘We Got the Beat’ before disbanding in 1985. Unbroken, Carlisle embarked on a hugely successful solo career and her second album, ‘Heaven on Earth’ produced the world-wide smash ‘Heaven is a Place on Earth.’ The hits kept coming on the following album 1989’s “Runaway Horses” a top 10 album and featured the hit songs “Leave a Light On” and “Summer Rain”. Belinda continued to produce hits including the 1996 classic “In Too Deep” showing that she has longevity in the pop music scene. The concert will feature a collection of her biggest and best hits and songs from the past and present.

Nickleback are an interesting phenomenon. They are obviously huge across the globe, yet this reviewer still has trouble finding anyone who will admit to liking Chad Kroeger (the Paddle Pop lion of moderate rock) and co. Regardless, people obviously think enough of them for their record company to deem them worthy of a greatest hits set and if you’re a fan of their middle-of-theroad stylings then this should keep you satisfied. All of the major Nickleback food groups are represented here with such chart slayers as ‘Photograph’, ‘Rockstar’, ‘How You Remind Me’ and ‘Lullaby’ all getting an airing, making this the perfect starting point for anyone interested in finding out more about Nickleback, but for this reviewer it was just 19 tracks that are coloured in different shades of beige. Ignore if you’re a fan of music.

Conjuring’ could arguably be best horror film of the last five years. ‘The Conjuring’ has everything you'd want in a scarefest - a blissfully ignorant family, a dilapidated farm house, ghost cops and pure evilWhile it doesn’t live up to ‘Amityville Horror’ or other paranormal classics, Wan has managed to pack oodles of tension, atmosphere and genuine scares into the script.

Disability Awareness Week

Government, business and the community unite to highlight contributions

T

he 3rd of December is International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), a dedicated day to place a greater emphasis on the abilities and achievements of people living with disability. Individuals and organisations throughout the country are encouraged to celebrate the day. This year we celebrate the 21st anniversary of International Day of Persons with disability. IDPwD is unique among community awareness days, as it unites disability organisations, businesses, federal, state

and local governments and the community. The day is a collaborative effort to celebrate and acknowledge the experience and expertise of people with disability. IDPwD is an opportunity to: celebrate the contributions people with disability make every day to their communities; make a positive contribution to the lives of 4 million of Australians with disability. IDPwD celebrations also incorporate the National Disability Awards. The overarching UN theme for IDPwD in 2013 is: Break barriers and open doors: to realise an inclusive society for all! The former Minister for Disability Reform, Jenny Macklin, and the former Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Carers, Amanda Rishworth have announced the 2013 International Day of People with Disability Patron – Professor Ron McCallum AO.

The Mai-Wel Group delivers flexible and innovative solutions to enable people with a disability to live the life they choose. Mai-Wel is now registered for the National Disability Insurance Scheme, Australia. For further information on the support clusters, please visit www.maiwel.com.au.

ustralia’s 2015 Asian Cup has formed a strategic alliance with the Special Olympics 2013 Asia Pacific Games to celebrate Newcastle’s involvement as a host city for both events. The partnership was sealed at a friendly mini-match involving two Newcastle Jets A-League players and Special Olympics footballers at Hunter Stadium on Thursday. The Hunter Stadium is the venue for the opening ceremony on December 1 of the first ever Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games (SOAPG) for athletes with an intellectual disability. It will also host four matches, including a semi-final and the third-fourth place playoff, at the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, the biggest football tournament ever staged in Australia. The Asian Cup/Special Olympics alliance will involve both organisations in a knowledge sharing agreement. Member for Newcastle, Tim Owen said: “The news that Australia’s 2015 Asian Cup

has formed a strategic alliance with the Special Olympics 2013 Asia Pacific Games comes as great news for Newcastle and NSW, which is hosting both events,” Mr Owen said. “The 2015 Asian Cup will be the biggest football tournament ever staged in Australia. This alliance between the Asian Cup and the Special Olympics will involve both organisations in a knowledge-sharing agreement, which will offer significant mutual benefits.” NSW Minister for Tourism and Major Events, George Souris said: “The NSW Government, through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, is proud to support the Special Olympics 2013 Asia Pacific Games, which is expected to bring an economic impact of over $8 million to the region. “I commend the Asian Cup/Special Olympics alliance on its collaborative focus in sharing knowledge as well as working to achieve beneficial outcomes for all involved. The alliance will provide a major boost for both events.”

Get set for the Jets A Stephen Bisset

“Mate, it has been unreal,” and enthusiastic Jets frontman, Dave Gleeson, told TE. “The first show back was in Caloundra and it was a real festival type crowd which was a great way to get back into it. We’ve also sold out shows at the Corner Hotel in Melbourne and the Metro in Sydney and one Cambo one [Thursday Dec 12], which is just brilliant.” For Gleeson, though, having the opportunity to wrap up the tour in the band’s hometown was just the icing on the cake. “Back in the good old days, we played something like 26 shows in the front bar and we really learnt who we were as a band in there. We have such a long history with the venue and it kind of feels a bit like coming full circle to be playing there again." Since forming from the ashes of Newcastle band Aspect in 1989, the Screaming Jets

Screaming Jets Cambridge Hotel Thu 12, Fri 13 & Sat 14 December have been at the very top of the Aussie rock and roll tree. With such well-crafted tracks as ‘Better’, ‘Helping Hand’ and ‘Sad Song’, the Jets essentially

picked up the pub rock mantle laid down by the likes of the Angels (which Gleeson now fronts) and Cold Chisel. Gleeson said it was the bands attitude

and tenacity (not to mention one of the most formidable stage presences on the circuit), just as much as their inherent ability to write great songs, that has seen the band stand the test of time. “We were a very working class band and I guess, in some respects, we thought we were a lot tougher than we actually were,” he laughed. “I think a lot of that had to do with coming from Newcastle. When regular Joe Public and record companies found out where we were from they were like “oh right, Newcastle,” like there was an aura about the city, and we definitely played up to that. “Also, the start and heart of the Jets is the songwriting – both Grant [Walmsley] and Paul [Woseen] are brilliant songwriters and while Grant isn’t with the band anymore, I’ve got complete faith in Paul as a songwriter.” While this tour will essentially be a greatest hits run – a teaser for an extensive 25th anniversary tour planned for next year, Gleeson reiterated that the Jets were still very much a going concern with a new album planned for next year. “Yeah, we’re going to be recording in the new year, so there’s still plenty of life in the Jets yet.”

there’s little denying that Newcastle/Blue Mountains country rock duo McAlister Kemp are a force to be reckoned with. After a triumphant appearance at this year’s CMC Rocks the Hunter, the boys caught the eye of American country juggernaut Big and Rich who invited the duo to Nashville where they started writing for their highly anticipated follow-up to ‘Country Proud’, ‘Harder To Tame’. So impressed were Big and Rich by the boys songs and high-energy show, that they drove the duo over four state lines and invited them to sing their anthemic ‘Country Proud’ to a 30,000-strong crowd at the Country Thunder Festival in Wisconsin. “We started off the year with a couple of Golden Guitar nominations and things have just been getting better from there,” Troy Kemp told TE. “We’ve also spent a fair part of the year working on our new album – we were over in Nashville in April writing for the album, so we ended up writing some in Nashville and some back home – we ended up with about 70 or 80 songs that we had to whittle back down to 10. We went over again in June working on it with producer Justin Moore who, if you know anything about country, is a pretty big deal. We really wanted to work with a top-level Nash-

of an evolving Aussie sound. “It’s a very hard-working blue-collar American-esque party-country sound, I guess,” Kemp said. “There does tend to be a bit of a backlash in Australia, you know, people saying “you guys aren’t country", but we are definitely part of a new and evolving country sound. We have the upmost respect for the Slim Dustys and John Williamsons - we know and respect the roots of Australian country but for us it’s about a much more upbeat and rockier vibe.” The band will be playing their final show for the year at Wests this weekend and Kemp said that punters could expect one hell of a show. “There will be plenty of hands in the air, for sure,” he laughed. “We’re also going to be shooting a video for our next single at Wests, so if you fancy getting in a video, come on down.”

Lemonade’ as an intensive touring period after ‘First Temple’ left the band near depleted. “After ‘First Temple’, it was a really hard and strange time and the recording process for the new album was marred by various oppressive forces and I found myself doubting if the thing would even see the f***ing light of day which just compounded the anxiety of it all. But, to finally see the light at the end of the tunnel is just awesome. It just feels so nice that the machine is all greased and we’re almost ready to unleash it on the world.

After creating much hubbub with their debut EP, ‘The Penance and the Patience’ the band relocated to the US to record their debut LP, ‘First Temple’ in 2009 and deCinque said that while it may have been a long time between drinks for the band – the wait will be definitely worth it. “The major chance stylistically with this album is that after we recorded ‘First Temple’ we recruited a new rhythm section which has opened our sound up heaps more, and this album [Pink Lemonade] was mostly tracked live which I think comes across pretty well on the single,” he said. DeCinque added that the difficult second album tag definitely applied to ‘Pink

Corbett’s Roo Grass Band, as well as the likes of Ian Moss and Moving Pictures, omnipotent Newcastle muso Dave Carter is finally stepping out on his own with his first solo album ‘Ten Tall Tales’. “It definitely has been a long time coming,” Carter told TE. “I’ve been playing around the traps for a really long time now and I have played on so many other people’s albums I thought it was high time that I did one of my own.” That’s not to say that this was a spur of the moment decision as he said the album had been a labour of love for years. “The idea was formulated, I guess, around 15 years ago but I’d start working on it and then get side-tracked by other projects or just life in general. “Then the actual recording was pretty long as well – it was around 18 months from when I first walked into the studio.” Carter enlisted the services of frequent collaborator and mate Robbie Long to produce the album and he said the intuitiveness fostered between the pair over

used to go along to shows as a kid in my dressing gown and slippers,” he laughed. “There was one night I was sitting in the band room at the side of the stage and he asked me if I wanted to play Johnny B Goode with the band. So, there I was at the side of the stage strumming along – he probably didn’t even have me turned up, but from that moment, I was hooked.

wings with their latest single ‘Big Things Calling’ – a tubthumping little number that has one foot in trad territory and one firmly in neo-indie-folk land along with some of the lushest harmonies heard this year. The band, made up of siblings Camilla, Christi, Eileen and Lear Hodgkins and James Chandler, is currently win the middle of their ‘Dressing Up, Shaking Down’ tour and Camilla Hodgkins told TE that Novocastrian punters could expect a bit more than your average pub gig when they hit town – as the name of the tour might suggest. “Yeah, we’re so excited – there have been some really radical costumes busted out by some of us on this tour and we are encouraging people to dress up and come along,” she said. long-standing fixture on the Hamilton dining scene, Verde Luna offers a bustling trattoriastyle dining experience. My dining partner and I decided to begin our evening with a Verde Luna Italiano pizza to share and we were in no way disappointed. The thin and crisp base held just the perfect amount of topping with no undesirable soggy spots in the middle. Fresh tomato, capsicum, olives and a spicy pepperoni are the predominant flavours with just the right amount of oregano, Romano cheese and anchovies really lifting this humble dish. My choice of the

classic veal saltimbocca for main was an absolute delight. The soft and tender veal simply melted away and was in no way overpowered by the traditional ham and cheese topping – both being mild and a perfect accompaniment to the delicate meat. A garlic and white wine reduction topped the dish off perfectly as did the side of beautifully cooked vegetables that were served in a fresh Napolitana sauce. My dining partner’s chicken pepperonata was another winner. A heady aroma of basil emanating from the gorgeous white wine pesto reduction. A mix of grilled capsicum strips and eggplant were delicious enough, but when combined with a perfectly grilled chicken breast, you’ll get a meal that packs a hefty flavour punch.

A fork in the road

W

ith his previous outfit, the multi-platinum post-emo outfit Dashboard Confessional going on indefinite hiatus, frontman Chris Carrabba is keeping his toe well and truly in the musical waters with his folksy-esque outfit Twin Forks. Following the recent announcement that the band would be joining Canada’s City and Colur on a few shows on their Australian tour, news of Twin Forks headline shows couldn’t have come soon enough. In recording his first collection of songs as Twin Forks, Carabba harnessed the acoustic sprit Dashboard Confessional

and channelled it through the rootsy classic folk sounds of his childhood. He pulled together some fiends – Suzie Zeldin on mandolin, Jonathon Clark on bass and Ben Homola on drums to create a sound that balances their punk and altrock backgrounds with music of a more traditional bent. “At the beginning of Dashboard, I wanted to write an acoustic record, but every time I played a D,C, or G chord - which are called the 'cowboy chords' - I would think about how Tom Petty or Cat Stevens or John Denver or Gordon Lightfoot did this already," Carrabba said. "That's when I started tuning my guitars all to hell and back, just so they sounded weird to me. I was probably playing DCG anyway, but I didn't know anything about guitar, and that was how I could get myself feeling like I was in new territory."

Electronic/metal genre benders Let The Number Be X found themselves nominated in the dance/electronica category for their track ‘Simon Says’ and in the metal/hardcore category for ‘Trigger Me Happy’. that must be satisfied. Whilst standard home loans are not available, you can still borrow using your SMSF. For SMSFs looking to purchase residential investment property, most lenders will restrict your loan to 72-75% of the property value for standard SMSF investment loans or up to 80% of the property value if you have a strong asset position and good cash flow. It also depends on the security type. Traditional home loans are not available for SMSFs as legislation restricts the lender from recourse against the other assets of the trust in the event that a property needs to be sold. What this means is that the loan is secured against the residential property in the trust and the lender can never make any claim against the other trust assets. While the information provided by Andrew McGrath is believed to be accurate, he does not accept responsibility for any inaccuracy or any actions taken in reliance upon this information.

There has been growing interest in the property market from those looking to establish and run their own SelfManaged Super Fund or SMSF. However, before jumping into the property market it is wise to get expert advice from those with experience in SMSF and fully aware of your personal circumstances. Almost anyone can set up a Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF). However, there are a few exceptions for individuals who are insolvent, have been convicted of a dishonest act or have been banned by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority or the Australian Taxation Office. In these cases, you cannot be a trustee or a director of a trustee company. To start up a SMSF, you must already have money in superannuation or be able to make contributions to super. If you would like to buy residential property using your own Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF), it can be done, however there are strict rules when it comes to lending ratios as well as other tests

A

lexia Hicks from Tingira Heights like many other seveteen-yearolds has recently been sitting for her HSC. However, unlike her classmates Alexia has been mixing her studies with top level ten pin bowling compeitions. Her outstanding ten pin successes during this year have included winning the NSW State Youth Masters Open title, gaining third place in the NSW State Masters Junior Open and winning the Girls Open President’s Shield.

Last year Alexia was third in the Australian Masters Open and was named as the NSW Ten Pin Bowling Sportsperson of the Year. Most recently Alexia placed second in the Sydney Junior Cup Event which attracts the top bowlers from around Australia. Alexia spends many hours training at the Warners Bay Superstrike Ten Pin Bowling Centre under the guidance of Coach Peter Zambelis and has recently been selected as a member of the inaugural Hunter Academy of Sport Ten Pin Bowling Talent Development Squad.

Alexia with her coach Peter Zambelis

Maitland City “Hunters” 116.5 points are the new leaders of the BCIB Big Bowls Challenge after its impressive 13/2 victory over previous leaders East Cessnock “Comets” (108), who dropped to third place. Lennon Scott claimed the Singles with a tight 13/7, 8/8 victory over Ben Twist. Rod Darcy & Eric Ryan sealed the win with a hard fought 6/6, 8/5 win over Brodie Turner & Michael Cronin in the Pairs. Kurri Kurri “Cannons” (110) moved into second place when they whitewashed Wallsend (69.5) 16/0. Club Coach Nathan Dawson lead the way defeating Wallsend marquee player Lee Sach 15/5, 15/8. Andrew Rees & Terry Antram proved too strong for Alex Bakay & Allan Dagwell winning 10/3, 11/4. Beresfield “Magpies” (104.5) retained fourth place despite its match against sixth placed Ettalong “Eagles” (91.5) being deferred to Tuesday evening. Alder Park (101.5) round out the top 5 after its 9/6 win over Valentine “Lakers” (77.5). All three matches were decided by tie-breaks, with Martin Ball defeating David Govan

7/16, 15/2, 5/2. The duo of Jason Price & Jason Stokes edged out Ian Macrae & Sam Laguzza 6/7, 11/5, 4/3 to clinch the win. Final round matches will be played this week with the Match of the Round being between Beresfield & Kurri Kurri at Beresfield. The other vital match is the clash between Alder Park & East Cessnock at Alder Park. Maitland City should clinch the Minor Premiership with a win over Wallsend at Maitland City.

Taggart's toil reward Hat-trick hero's efforts noted by coach van Egmond as Jets notch third-straight win Paul Monforte

N

ewcastle Jets coach Gary van Egmond has highlighted a commitment to hard work in off-season training as one of the key factors behind Adam Taggart’s explosive hat-trick in the 3-1 win over Melbourne Heart at Hunter Stadium on Sunday. "He took his chances, they weren’t easy goals. He is getting more types of finishes, goals from outside the box now so it is nice to see him developing," van Egmond said. "His stocks keep on rising, he has been in talks with the club and I’d be surprised if he doesn’t stay". It took a while for the Jets to assert their dominance over a side searching for their first win of the season, but by the latter stages of the match they were clearly on top and had several other decent scoring opportunities. The victory keeps Newcastle in third place. Star striker Emile Heskey again started from the bench and entered the game in the 51st minute,

Round 7 results

Celebrations as Adam Taggart (right) scores one of his three goals on Sunday with van Egmond still afforded the luxury of allowing the Englishman to completely recover from injury while the team keeps winning. Newcastle head back down the M1 Motorway this Saturday night for another clash with Sydney FC who have also lifted their form in recent weeks and are coming off a last-gasp victory over Wellington Phoenix.

The match gets underway at 7.45pm at Allianz Stadium. Meanwhile, James Virgili also scored a hattrick for the Jets’ National Youth League side in their 6-3 win over the AIS at Wanderers Oval on Saturday. Mitchell Oxborrow, Kale Bradbery and Joey Gibbs also scored goals for Newcastle.
