Green Army mission Liberals reveal Newcastle site will launch environmental initiative Amelia Parrott

The fallout following the withdrawal of Liberal candidate for Charlton, Kevin Baker, continues, with the AEC releasing a statement on Monday to clarify what it means for Charlton voters following numerous enquiries from residents. “Candidates who advise a resignation after the deadline for the close of nominations and the declaration of candidates still appear on the ballot paper,” the statement read.

ewcastle may become one of the first sites in the country to benefit from the Coalition’s ‘Green Army’ environmental initiative if an Abbott Government is elected on September 7. The Green Army will be put to work in the initial stage of Newcastle’s memorial walk project between Strzelecki Lookout and Trigg Point, preparing the site for upgrades by clearing the site of rubbish and weeds, as well as contributing to stage two of the development, beautifying the site with native plants and implementing erosion control. The walk is scheduled to open in 2015 to mark the centenary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli. Shadow Minister for Climate Action, Environment and Heritage, Greg Hunt, said the announcement of $340,000 funding for the two stages would go far to train young people in the area. “The value of these back-to-back projects is $340,000, but more importantly, ten young people will be getting training, doing things for the environment and helping to build one of Australia’s great coastal walks,” he said. Liberal candidate for Newcastle, Jaimie Abbott, said the project was of personal importance to her. “The memorial walk in particular is fairly close to my heart, being a

returned veteran from Afghanistan myself, but it will also be a tribute to those who worked at the BHP because of course, 1915 was the first year that BHP produced steel,” Ms Abbott said. Mr Hunt said Federal funds would

be delivered once the project has been fully funded. State Newcastle MP Tim Owen, who has been advocating for the project for the past two years, said the State Government had contributed funds to the

development and design of the project but construction would be paid for through local private investment. He added that the project is currently around two thirds funded. @amelia_parrott

orget the atrocities going on in Syria, or even the no-man’s land where we seem to be marooned on the question of asylum seekers and how they’re treated. The biggest issue of this election campaign is set to be the Coalition’s Paid Parental Leave Scheme. And that’s pathetic. Why? Because it shows you how short-sighted and mean spirited we can really be. It’s interesting to see the extent to which Australia’s two major parties have done an ideological switch on certain issues this election, that we have a potential Liberal Government putting forward as one of its key policies one of the most generous and equitable paid parental schemes in the world, one that recognises a woman’s right to be paid at her wage while she’s caring for a baby, and to be paid superannuation, while having the time to bond with her baby before returning to the workforce. It has Labor reform written all over it. In the interests of full disclosure, I have a stake in this issue as my husband and I plan to start a family

sometime during the next term of Government – not because we think the 44th parliament an auspicious time to procreate, it just so happens the time is nigh. But the question at the heart of it is: why shouldn’t women get a fairer deal? Because retirees might lose a tax break on their shares? Come on. I think it’s sad that many retirees, who are the future grandmothers and grandfathers of the mothers and fathers-to-be in question, are too worried about a small hit to

their retirement cash flow, to realise that maybe it’s a good thing overall when their children, who are facing record cost of living pressures, rising housing prices and a keen shortage of childcare, are given the means to make a tough situation a little less so. Who knows, the scheme may save grandparents the resources they would otherwise have contributed to help these fledging family units. The other argument being bandied around – “I never had it, so why should they?”– is ludicrous. The people pedalling this line surely can’t decry, say, medicare? If this was our approach to all social spending, we’d never see any socially responsible policies implemented in this country. A paid parental leave scheme that doesn’t penalise women financially for having children is absolutely justified. Let’s not forget the end product here is a new generation of tax payers. They’re going to be the ones funding the retirees’ hospital bills or people’s pensions one day. And perhaps also the cost of the scheme that was introduced when they were introduced into the world.

Would-be Charlton candidate claims AEC cost him the chance to run

ould-be Charlton candidate, Arjay Martin, has hit out at the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) with claims the current system of nomination for candidates is rigged in favour of the major parties. The claims came just days after the AEC rejected Mr Martin’s application for nomination as a candidate for the Federal seat of Charlton as he apparently failed to provide the Commission with the 100 signatures of eligible electors required of independent candidates under the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918, a decision that Mr Martin fiercely disputes. “My wife and I went through the whole list [117 signatures] on the two computers at the Charlestown electoral office,” Mr Martin explained.“We found something like 104 valid nominators.” Mr Martin told the Post he uncovered deficiencies in the AEC system that may have led to eligible nominators being identified an ineligible, but the AEC will not show him their findings without a Freedom of Information Request. As well as his own issues with his nomination for candidacy in Charlton, Mr Martin believed the current nomination system favoured major parties over

Arjay Martin, who had his application to stand as an Independent in Charlton rejected

independent candidates. “I think it’s discriminatory that there is one set of rules for independents who aren’t in parliament already and another for parties,” he said. “They are purposefully hampering independent candidates and it’s taking away choice from the voters of Charlton.” Mr Martin, who ran in the Lake Macquarie mayoral elections last year,

and as a candidate for the State seat of Charlestown in 2011, said although he is extremely disappointed, he intended to continue running as an independent candidate in future elections. A spokesperson from the AEC told the Post that they are aware of Mr Martin’s claims and maintain he did not have the requisite 100 eligible nominators. @amelia_parrott

he fallout following the withdrawal of former Liberal candidate for Charlton, Kevin Baker, continues, with the AEC releasing a statement on Monday to clarify what it means for Charlton voters following numerous enquiries from residents. “Candidates who advise a resignation after the deadline for the close of nominations and the declaration of candidates still appear on the ballot paper,” the statement read. “Any attempt by early voters (or voters on election day) in Charlton or in any other electorate to cross out names on ballot papers, write scribbles or comments, or provide an incompletely numbered ballot paper risks their vote being informal and not counted. “Voters must vote formally without any modifications.” Mr Baker withdrew his candidacy last week following revelations lewd comments were posted on an internet forum for Mini enthusiasts that he ran. Mr Baker apologised for his actions.

e’ve made it past the halfway point of this campaign and it is still Tony Abbott’s election to lose. Yet, Kevin Rudd remains in real trouble. Labor don’t have the cash for big election sweeteners and so far big promises that involve big spends are outside of the forward estimates. A $2 billion rescue package for the car manufacturing industry to 2025 and an uncosted proposed company tax cut to 20 per cent in the Northern Territory are both not in the budget forecast so they’re essentially second-term promises. The most stark example of this was when Labor National Secretary George Wright and Mr Hawker had agreed to take part in last week’s People’s Forum – a senior staff member on the ground knew nothing about such a deal. Nothing. Not even a series of gaffes and the dumping of a sexist-website-wieldingcandidate has managed to derail Tony Abbott so far. His staunch advocacy of

Like when you were dumped as leader, replaced by Julia Gillard, and then slowly climbed your way back up the greasy poll to sit on the top, Mr Rudd? How could we forget? It delivered three of the most tumultuous years in political history. But I don’t think such a reminder works as a re-election pitch. Voters won’t reward Rudd for something they partly blame him for. After week three of the campaign, I can tell you that the old Kevin Rudd is back and so are his most undesirable traits.

the Paid Parental Leave plan has some colleagues within his own party shaking their heads. A recent poll showed it’s vote winner, but I’m not so sure about that. Corporate women on a higher than average wage, who stand to benefit the most, were probably going to vote for the Coalition anyway. Costings and demonstrating the ability to add-up is the Coalition’s biggest burden to this point. Labor will hound Tony Abbott until D-Day and when he does finally release all the detail (which will probably be election eve) he’s going to want to make sure that there’s no fancy accounting. They’ve had six years to get the balance right. At the half way point of this campaign, the mood for change is palpable. There’s still time to go, but at this stage, I predict Labor could lose 20 or more seats.

Her visit was part of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre’s national ‘Hot Potato’ campaign, which aims to take the heat out of the debate around asylum seeker policy by debunking myths and presenting the facts over a hot snack. “The aim of the Hot Potato is to really signify what the asylum seeker debate in Australia has become over the last 30 or 40 years – politicians have passed it from person to person,” explained Asylum Seeker Resource Centre director of community engagement, Jana Favero. “It’s become so hot that no-one has actually stopped to take the heat out of the debate and cool the debate and take it back to a humanitarian issue. “This trip has really highlighted that so many people’s opinions are based on misinformation and misconception...so what we are trying to do is actually get out the facts and then people can base their opinion on the facts.” Despite describing the asylum

Blow your nose regularly when you have cold rather than sniffling mucous back into your head and always wash your hands afterwards. 2. Staying rested when you first come down with a cold or the flu helps your body direct its energy toward fighting the infection. 3. Gargling a teaspoon of salt dissolved in warm water can moisten a sore throat and bring temporary relief. 4. Drinking hot liquids can relieve nasal congestion, help prevent dehydration, and soothe the uncomfortably inflamed membranes that line your nose and throat. 5. Take steamy showers to help moisturise your nasal passages and relax you. Apply hot or cold packs around your congested sinuses - either temperature may help you feel more comfortable. 6. Don’t fly unless necessary as the change in air pressure while flying can add stress to your upper respiratory system. If you must fly, use a decongestant and carry a nasal spray with you to use just before take-off and landing. what would your doctor say if he or she could actually see inside your arteries? well, now it’s possible with a simple ultrasound screening that can reveal dangerous plaque build-up or blockage from Screen For Life. One of our quick and painless scans can help determine your risks for cardiovascular disease, the number 1 cause of death in men and women in Australia. As you age, fatty deposits known as ‘plaque’ can build up in your arteries. You may not notice any symptoms. Our aim is to spot disease in its early stages to allow you to take preventive measures with your GP. While scheduled check-ups with your local GP are important, our ultrasound examinations give valuable additional information. We can directly visualise an aortic aneurysm if it is present and visualise the build-up of fatty deposits in real time, the most common cause of stroke. Your full package of screenings will only take about an hour of your time and you will be notified on the same day if we spot a potentially serious risk. Your full results report will be sent to you within 21 days.

Normal artery allows blood to flow through easily

As you age, arteries can become partially blocked or even collapse

How 4 simple, painless tests check for serious, silent disease 1. To help reduce your risk of stroke a 10 minute scan of your Carotid Arteries examines blood flow to your brain and ‘plaque’. Plaque is the term for fatty deposits that can build up in your arteries, without showing any symptoms. 2. Your ECG Test checks for Atrial Fibrillation, a heart condition that can multiply the risk of stroke by 5. 3. Your Ankle-Brachial index Test (PAD Screening) checks for hardening of the arteries which affects 1 in 6 people over 55. It may show no symptoms – but increases the risk of heart attack or stroke from 2 to 6 times. 4. An Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm is a weakening of the wall of your largest artery that causes it to balloon in size. If it ruptures, death occurs in 80% of cases.

Plaque build-up reduces blood flow and can lead to stroke and vascular disease

Mum-to-be believes the Coalition’s parental leave plan will help families

Coalition call a “modest tax on business” plus “associated reductions in other outlays and increases in receipts.” The Parliamentary Budget Office has costed the scheme at $5.5 billion per year. Nationals candidate for Hunter, Michael Johnsen, questioned the inequity of the existing paid parental leave scheme. “When a new baby arrives there is no ‘leave’ from mortgages, power and fuel bills,” Mr Johnsen said in a statement. “Australian men and women receive a replacement wage when they are on annual leave, sick leave and long service leave – so why shouldn’t a mother receive her full wage while on parental leave?” Labor candidate for Hunter, Joel Fitzgibbon, hit back, doubting the Coalition’s ability to fund the scheme. “We’ve put in for the first time a sustainable and fully-funded paid parental leave scheme,” he said. “Tony Abbott, by contrast, has put in place a $5 billion scheme. “He is going to half pay for it with a big new tax on business, a tax which will inevitably be passed on to the consumer but hasn’t been able to say how he is paying for the other half. While we would always like to do more, it has to be affordable and sustainable.” @amelia_parrott

ocal mums may soon be entitled to more time with their newborn baby without having to forego their weekly pay packet as part of the Coalition’s controversial paid parental leave scheme. If the Coalition is elected, the scheme, which comes into effect in July 1, 2015, will give mothers access to 26 weeks paid parental leave paid at the mother’s actual wage or minimum wage – whichever is highest – plus superannuation contributions. This is in contrast to the Labor Party’s current scheme where mothers at paid at the minimum wage for 18 weeks, and without super. Congratulations and welcome home Team Lake Macquarie

I

have just returned from Windsor, Canada, where Team Lake Macquarie has experienced tremendous success in the recent 2013 International Children’s Games. Being a part of the 2013 Windsor International Children’s Games meant I was able to experience the importance of this event and witness some of the achievements our young athletes from Team Lake Macquarie made on an international level. Our team of fifteen Lake Macquarie athletes were given a wonderful opportunity to compete against other young people from all over the world, winning a number of medals in their respective fields in the process. It was our best result yet in this competition, with nine athletes receiving medals. We took out the gold medal in the girls’ high jump and 4x100-metre relay; silver in the boys’ gymnastics and high jump, and girls’ long jump; and bronze in the girls’ high jump. Taking part in the International Children’s Games isn’t just about

the competition, but is about children from different cultural backgrounds coming together to enjoy a once in a lifetime experience and learn from one another. I also had the honour of being presented with the International Children’s Games flag at the closing ceremony in front of 6,000 supporters to bring home in anticipation of the 2014 Games in Lake Macquarie. Bringing the flag of the International Children’s Games home with me to Lake Macquarie City has been one of the highlights of my time as Mayor of Lake Macquarie. The 2014 Lake Macquarie International Children’s Games will be held from December 6-11 next year and I am very much looking forward to bringing the International Children’s Games to our shores, so the world can experience all that Lake Macquarie has to offer and to see how wonderful our city truly is.

Retail workers call on candidates to support full adult pay rates for 18-year-olds

oung retail workers are calling on candidates in the upcoming Federal election to support what they call ‘equal pay for equal work.’ Retail trade union, Shop and Distributive and Allied Employees Association (SDA) members rallied in Newcastle last week calling for workers to receive full adult pay rates from age 18. Under the current retail industry award, a full time, adult, level one, retail service assistant earns a base rate of $17.89 an hour, while an 18-year-old in the same role earns just $12.59, a disparity of 30 per cent. While the base rate of pay for junior employees increases with age, SDA Branch secretary, Barbara Nebart, said if 18-yearold employees are treated as an adults in every other aspect of life, the workplace should be no different. “A lot of times when someone in retail reaches 18, they’ve already got three years experience under their belt – they started at 14 and nine months or 15 and in a lot of cases they are in positions of responsibility training other people as well. “They’re getting paid 30 per cent less than a 21-year-old who walks in off the street with no experience. It’s not fair and it’s not logical as far as we are concerned.” Ms Nebart said securing the same pay

rate for 18 to 20-year-olds was the union’s next step in a phased approach to pay equality for young adult workers. Labor candidate for Newcastle, Sharon Claydon, said countries like New Zealand have had adult rates for 18-year-olds for a number of years and there is no evidence to suggest a reduction in employment

opportunities for young people or hardship for employers. Ms Claydon added that the Labor Party would continue to support equal pay for 18 to 21-year-olds if elected on September 7. A Coalition spokesperson said the Coalition had been following the case regarding youth wages, which is currently

before the Fair Work Commission, with interest, but did not confirm whether it would support the push. “It is right for the independent umpire to consider all the competing claims, balance them up and make an appropriate decision,” the spokesperson said. @amelia_parrott

Baby who contracted disease is in a stable condition, HNE Health says

A

baby is in a stable condition in a Hunter area hospital with a confirmed case of meningococcal disease, the eighth in the Hunter New England Health region this year. Close contacts of the baby are being prescribed clearance antibiotics and there are no links between this case and any previous cases. Public Health Physician Dr Dave Durrheim said seeking medical attention quickly may prevent the development of serious complications. “ If anyone suspects meningococcal disease, they should seek medical attention immediately,” Dr Durrheim said. Up to 10 per cent of patients with invasive meningococcal disease in Australia die as a result of the infection. The first symptoms of meningococcal disease may include pain in the legs, cold hands and feet and abnormal skin colour. Later symptoms may include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, dislike of bright lights, nausea and vomiting, a rash of reddish-purple spots or bruises and drowsiness. Babies with the infection can be irritable, not feed properly and have an abnormal cry. In 2012, there were nine confirmed cases of meningococcal disease in the Hunter New England Local Health District. There were 15 confirmed cases in 2011, 13 in 2010 and 14 in 2009. Dr Durrheim said that while meningococcal disease could be serious, in most cases, early detection and treatment resulted in a complete recovery. For more information, visit the Hunter New England Health website: www. hnehealth.nsw.gov.au.

Your vote is a valuable thing, and all enrolled Australian citizens aged 18 or over are required by law to vote. So if you’re going to be away from home, or unable to make it to a polling place in your state or territory on election day, make sure you vote early. You can apply for a postal vote, or vote at any early voting centre.

The Newcastle Post

Continues from page 11 Speaking to demonstrators, longtime advocate of marriage equality and Labor candidate for Newcastle, Sharon Claydon, pressured local Liberal candidates to reveal their stance on same-sex marriage. “Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, has recently announced after the election that he will put forward legislation in the first 100 days of the new parliament to bring about marriage equality,” she said. “It’s only a matter of time and we need progressive members of parliament to take this issue forward. “It is genuinely a shame that there a no Liberal candidates here today, I’m sure they were all invited but not one from the region has actually stood up in support of marriage equality.” Greens candidate for Newcastle, Michael Osborne, said with the possibility of an Abbott-led Government becoming increasingly likely, voters needs to elect progressive representatives in the senate to ensure marriage equality becomes a reality. Liberal candidate for Newcastle, Jaimie Abbott, told the Post that if elected she would listen to the views of the community regarding the issues of marriage equality but would not state her personal view. “A good local member listens to their community and if elected I will be a strong advocate for the Newcastle community,” Ms Abbott said in a statement. “I will listen and take the views of the community on this issue to the party room.” @amelia_parrott

Taken from the Regional Development Australia Fund, the grant will cover almost half of the $15 million project, which involves reopening the Heritage Mall to one way traffic to create a shared zone, and creating a larger access point to the Hunter River. Maitland Mayor, Councillor Peter Blackmore, said that projects like The Levee brings the community together. “It was easy to criticise people [over the downturn in mall patronage], but the fact is that Maitland had turned its back on its lifeblood,” Cr Blackmore said. “Now, people will be able to flow through to the river – this is all for Maitland.” Construction on the first phase, the shared zone, is expected to begin by March and should be completed by the end of the year. @melcomber

ALZHEIMER’S AUSTRALIA

MEMORY

WALK & JOG

THE RACE AGAINST DEMENTIA

Alzheimer’s Australia NSW’s second annual Hunter Memory Walk & Jog at Speers Point Park, Lake Macquarie is on again on Sunday, September 8. Hunter Memory Walk & Jog raises awareness and much-needed funds to support the work done by Alzheimer’s Australia NSW to assist the estimated 10,000 people living with dementia, their families and friends in the Hunter and Central Coast through the Hunter Dementia and Memory Resource Centre. Event organisers are expecting 1,500 people to take part in a 2-kilometre walk, a 7.5-kilometre walk or a 7.5-kilometre run at this year’s event and hope to raise $150,000 for dementia support services. Speers Point resident Jillian Kidd will be among those donning her joggers and taking to the track for the event. The Dementia and Palliative Care Advisor for Calvary Aged Care and

Retirement Services is a strong advocate for people living with dementia and has rallied her family and friends to join her team ‘Forget Me Nots’ for Hunter Memory Walk & Jog. “I believe in raising awareness through events such as this and have rallied many colleagues and friends to join in supporting this event,” she said. Mrs Kidd said she utilises the services of the Alzheimer’s Australia NSW library in North Ryde to keep up-to-date with the latest dementia news and information as well as Alzheimer’s Australia NSW events, like Hunter Memory Walk & Jog. For more information about Hunter Memory Walk & Jog or to register, visit: www.memorywalk.com.au/hunter. Alzheimer’s Australia NSW is the charity for people with dementia and

Shortland Public School’s kindergarten class getting into the skipping spirit

Melissah Comber

any young hearts skipped a beat at Shortland Public School last week when Newcastle Knights star Anthony Quinn joined their Jump Rope for Heart festivities. Last Thursday’s event was the end of the program for the school, which was carried out over several weeks, and culminated in awards for the most consistent and most improved skipper. The awards were taken by out by brother and sister Daimon and Schlar Page. The Jump Rope for Heart program, which is in its 30th year, encourages schools to participate in exercise while learning about a healthy lifestyle. Since its inception, over 8

million children have participated. Shortland Public School Principal, Stacey Freund, said that the benefits of the program extend past the physical. “The program has immediate benefits for children’s confidence, strength, coordination and teamwork skills and is a fun way for them to learn about the importance of being active. It’s important to us that our students get involved in a fun and engaging health education program. Quinn said that participating in the event reminded him of his childhood, when his mother was involved with the program. “I have fond memories of sitting on the sidelines watching, he said. “When I got older I gave it go, but I wasn’t the best skipper. Half these kids could probably out skip me! @melcomber

Fellowship of Australian Writers Lake Macquarie branch president and published author, Linda Visman, at Wangi Wangi Library

L

ake Macquarie writers will be under the spotlight this weekend when the inaugural Lake Macquarie Local Writers Showcase gets underway in Warners Bay. More than a dozen local published authors, covering genres from psychological thrillers to family history, will share their skills, knowledge and experience at the event in the hope of inspiring budding writers to mark their mark. Fellowship of Australian Writers (FAW) Lake Macquarie branch president and novelist, Linda Visman, said it was important for up and coming authors to

learn from those with experience. “That’s how we all start, as amateur writers who want to improve their skills or find out more about how they go about writing and getting published and all of those things,” she said. “For the ones who are in the early stages it is very, very important because I think that gives them a great sense of hope that they can do it, too.” Anyone with an interest in reading or writing is welcome to attend. The FAW Lake Macquarie Local Writers Showcase is on this Saturday, August 31 from 11am to 4pm at the Lake Macquarie Performing Arts Centre in Warners Bay. Entry is $5. For a copy of the programme, email lakemacfaw2@gmail.com or phone 49 772 956 for more information. @amelia_parrott

Coming to our Senses

Wednesday, August 28, 2013

The Newcastle Post

An exploration of Yoga, Mindfulness & Nature

20

T

hese days it seems most of us can be prone to stress as we attempt to balance a busy career, family commitments and personal lives, often to the detriment of our health and inner wellbeing. Mother of two young children and local yoga and meditation practitioner, Lisa Pollard, is no stranger to the stresses of daily life but has found relief in the concept of mindfulness. “Mindfulness is about paying attention in a very direct way, to the present moment, in a non-judgemental way,” Ms Pollard, who has been teaching mindfulness techniques to students in Newcastle for eleven years, said. Taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather, this month Ms Pollard will facilitate a weekend of mindfulness on Saturday, September 14 and Sunday, September 15 at Dixon Park Surf Club in Merewether. The weekend, called ‘Coming to our Senses,’ will teach students to practice mindfulness in their own lives through various meditation exercises and nurturing yoga that encourages participants to open up to the sensations in the body. “The ocean can be a great way to open up to our senses,” Ms Pollard said. “Whether it is the sensation of the sand underneath our feet, hearing the waves or looking out at the ocean... meditation and yoga practices can help us become aware of our senses and

promote mindfulness.” The weekend is suitable for everyone from beginners to experienced yogis, pre and post natal and those recovering from illness or injury. Ms Pollard has been practicing yoga for 22 years and has completed extensive training in yoga and meditation. She currently teaches drop-in classes four times a week in Wickham, called ‘Moving into Stillness’, runs 8-week mindfulness-based stress reduction courses and offers courses privately for students, adults and couples. For more information or to book a place at her ‘Coming to our Senses’ weekend, phone Lisa Pollard on 0403 186 146 or visit www.lisapollard.com.au.

Maitland Gaol launches tour for deaf and hearing impaired

T

he secrets of Maitland Gaol will now be unlocked for deaf and hearing impaired visitors, as the tourist attraction launched the selfguided Auslan and captioned tours as part of national Hearing Awareness Week. Maitland is the first former gaol in Australia to offer OpenMi Tours, and is one of only twelve public tourist sites around the country catering for deaf and hearing impaired people in this way. Manager Marketing and Communications Rachel MacLucas said the gaol was contacted by not for profit Australian Communications Exchange (ACE) in March and jumped at the

opportunity to provide the service. “ACE converted our general audio tour to both the Auslan and captioned versions to create the same experience for all visitors,” she said. “The tour is available through downloading the OpenMi Tours application on a smart phone or tablet, or through the gaol’s iPod tours, which will now also incorporate historic images of the site. Representatives from ACE and the local hearing impaired community attended the launch on Tuesday afternoon as part of local Hearing Awareness Week events. For more information on Maitland Gaol and the new tours, visit the website: www. maitlandgaol.com.au.

ur hearing is one of our primary senses and yet sometimes we forget it needs taking care of, too. Just like a routine dental or heart check, we should attend yearly checkups for our hearing to ensure they are performing at their best. Local hearing provider, AudioClinic Newcastle, has continued to deliver terrific results for hearing healthcare in their community. Located at Suite 2, Number 3 Market Street, they’re trained to provide personalised hearing checkups and they’re free. How can they provide free hearing check-ups? “We believe that hearing health awareness is important, particularly as we start to head into our 50s, which is why, to help people make the first step, we invite every person who walks through our door a free hearing checkup,” explained Clinician Lorraine Chee from the Newcastle clinic. In just 30 minutes, AudioClinic’s clinicians conduct a thorough hearing check-up and, if appropriate, take you through the hearing solutions they offer including the Alta. The latest in hearing devices, Alta provides you a unique and personalised hearing experience. In the meantime, why not check your hearing yourself and take our online test at www.audioclinic.com.au.

o what are some of the signs you should look out for, either for yourself or your loved one, which show you may have hearing problems? Here are some warning signs: 1. Asking people to repeat themselves all the time (like it’s their fault you can’t hear them). 2. Getting tired and frustrated when talking to people. 3. Answering questions incorrectly, or even answering the wrong question. 4. Turning up the TV so loud the neighbours complain, or at least the cat does! 5. Ignoring the grandkids because you can’t understand what they’re saying. earing is considered to be our most vital sense, enabling us to process everyday sounds so we can communicate clearly and interact safely in our daily environment. After all, we depend on our hearing 24hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week. Yet every day, thousands of Australians with hearing loss struggle through conversations instead of enjoying the rich sounds that life has to offer. Leading local hearing specialist ihear work to transform lives by providing better hearing for the Newcastle community. They look after the hearing needs of a wide range of locals including pension and DVA card holders, retirees, workers and children, making better hearing more convenient and accessible than ever. Hearing loss is far more prevalent in the community than most people realise, with recent studies showing with 1 in 6 Australians have a treatable hearing loss, but what may surprise many is that nearly 50 per cent of these people are under retirement age. “As the world gets louder, the age of those with hearing loss gets younger,” explains ihear Audiologist, Alison Young. “The effect of noise exposure means

we are increasingly seeing people in their 40’s and 50’s coming to us with a hearing problem.” Despite this, research shows that the majority of people wait up to 7-10 years before they do anything about their hearing difficulties, making their problem considerably worse and harder to treat. The longer people wait to have their hearing needs addressed, the chances of rehabilitation are significantly reduced, as the sensory receptors in the brain deteriorate over time if not kept active by sounds. As hearing loss progresses individuals can become isolated withdrawing from activities, causing a significant impact on their relationships and emotional states. It is recommend that those who are concerned about their hearing or experience trouble hearing have their hearing tested by a professional hearing specialist. ihear offer a wide range of solutions to suit all types of hearing loss, lifestyles and budgets, so there is no need to put off getting your hearing checked. If you have a hearing concern and would like to book your free hearing screening, call ihear on 1300 531 870.

pharmacy NOTES

Think twice about advice

f you get sick and go off to a heath professional, they will hopefully diagnose you and get you the best treatment. But have you ever wondered who is telling them what treatment they should be giving? Well, some other Aussies have. According to a disturbing new Australian study from Bond University, most members of US panels that define conditions have financial links to drug companies. The study’s researchers raise questions about processes used for defining diseases and say about 75 per cent of members of US panels have declared conflicts of interest. Of those, the average panel member disclosed seven industry links. The top medical panels in the US have a big influence on what happens in Australia. Lead author Ray Moynihan, a senior research fellow at the university, said there is a clear conflict of interest. “If a panel of experts decides to expand the definition of a condition, then that is widening the market for the companies those experts are working with.” This is obviously hugely profitable to the companies. “We are talking about many common conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma or depression. “One example is a 2003 panel that created a new diagnostic category called ‘pre-hypertension’. Or they lowered the ‘safe’ cholesterol numbers, so overnight, millions of people woke up with now ‘unsafe’ levels.” That instantly creates a very large number of people who fitted into that category. Pharmaceuticals are a trillion dollar industry and can pretty much make up their own rules. The best way to keep out of their dealings is to stay as healthy as possible in the first place.

Top five fashion mistakes

A

nyone and everyone can pick out a fashion ‘crime’ in a crowd, but is it a trap that we all fall into? Every day we make fashion related mistakes and while some won’t be obvious to the average person, once you notice what you’re doing, it is an easy fix. This week I went on the hunt for the most common fashion mistakes and here is my top five. Mistake 1: Did you know that most of us only wear around 20 per cent of our wardrobe? Take a look in your wardrobe and reunite yourself with those long lost clothes you forgot. Donate the clothes that you are unlikely to wear again to charity. Mistake 2: So you are running late for work and you forget your belt, exposing your ‘Calvins’, or decide that your bright red bra is not ‘that’ noticeable under a sheer white top. Yes, it’s noticeable and yes, it’s a crime. If you can see it, so can your boss, your friends, your family and that stranger who keeps staring at you. Mistake 3: If you are not too sure if you should wear jeans or a black tie, or not sure if an outfit fits you or your shape correctly, don’t leave it to chance. Take a little extra time to be sure your outfit is appropriate. Mistake 4: Love that new season Louis Vuitton handbag but don’t have enough cash to buy the real thing? Whatever you do, don’t fake it. Nothing says trashy like imitation handbags, clothes, shoes or accessories. If you can’t afford it, save up or simply forget it; there are some really nice, classy handbags out there. Mistake 5: You might love your makeup, but no-one loves smoky eyes, sparkling eye shadow or false lashes during the daytime. Heavy makeup should be kept for evenings only.

Good teeth health

he once controversial issue of fluoridation of water now has broad national support. More than 70 per cent of the Australian population has access to artificially fluoridated drinking water consistent with the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. And, since the 1960s and 70s when this oral health strategy was introduced, the incidence of dental caries (tooth decay) in Australia has been significantly reduced. Nevertheless, just drinking fluoridated water doesn’t necessarily guarantee a lifelong mouthful of strong teeth and healthy gums. The most common cause of oral health problems is plaque. Plaque is a thin, sticky film which builds up on the teeth. It is produced by a combination of saliva, bacteria and food. The bacteria ferment sugars in the food forming acids that erode the tooth enamel. Plaque also damages the gums as well. So, during the recent Dental Health Week the Australian Dental Association released The Young Person’s Oral Survival Guide. This publication aims to help young adults ensure their teeth make it well past their 30th birthday. The Guide, which is downloadable from www. dentalhealthweek.com.au, tackles the oral health impacts that can arise from lifestyle issues such as binge drinking and smoking and the more taboo subjects of drug use and oral sex. For some good tips on how to keep your teeth long term, and how to keep those tissues that support the teeth healthy as well, you should also get a copy of the fact card titled ‘Oral Health’. It’s available from pharmacies around Australia that provide the Pharmaceutical Society’s Self Care health information.

THERE IS NO EXCUSE! Skin cancer is deadly serious business GET YOUR SKIN CHECKED NOW!

The most important thing you may do for your health this winter is get your skin checked The sun-smart message is often neglected during the winter. Winter may prove to be the best time for a full skin check. As most people are covered up during the winter months, this minimises sun exposure to skin lesions and moles. This can allow for better dermoscopy viewing (a distinct magnifying light, which allows a doctor to closely examine spots on the skin). Remember to protect your skin this winter by applying 50+ sunscreen to exposed areas of skin. If you notice a spot on the skin that looks different from the others or is changing, bleeding or itchy, it should be examined by a doctor.

Issues that affect youth

A

s Election Day approaches, without doubt young people will have a significant say in electing the next government. Last week I discussed the top three issues as nominated by young people Australia wide. Polling indicates that young people are most concerned about jobs, housing affordability and marriage equality. These results indicate that young people will be thinking about the future when they cast their ballot on September 7. This idea continues when looking at the next of the ‘top issues’ concerning young people. Climate change is highly ranked as an issue in the Australia Institute survey of young people voter intent. While both major parties now support reducing Australia’s atmospheric pollution, they have differing ideas on how this should be achieved. The Labor Party’s policy of a carbon price, or Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), places a strong onus on polluters to reduce their emissions by creating a carbon economy. The Liberal Party’s policy of ‘direct action’ involves a mix of paying companies to reduce their pollution and an army of volunteers to be involved in local projects such as tree planting. Unsurprisingly, university funding also made the list of issues young people are more likely to care about. Many young people are concerned that the current funding system for universities encourages a more corporate approach to education where students are seen as customers who simply study to ‘buy’ a qualification. This philosophy has lead to an increase in the number of students per class, making discussion and feedback difficult or impossible.

Making brains HOT

here is still a traditional view of education that is pushing for the learning of facts. Facts are important – knowing your timetables or learning a song can be useful, but as an end in itself has little benefit. Most people have an experience of being able to recall information for an exam that 3 months later they had forgotten. This is Lower Order Thinking (LOT). The way to embed knowledge is by understanding, or making a brain think, using Higher Order Thinking (HOT). Knowledge is useless if you don’t use and understand it. We want to make brains HOT, not just fill them with a LOT of facts. Any animal can learn facts and repeat them back. They can transport knowledge, but the difference for humans is we can transform knowledge into something new. LOT activities involve some of the following: Tell, List, Describe, Relate, Locate, Write, Find, State, Name, Identify, Label, Recall, Define, Recognise, Match, Reproduce, Memorise. HOT activities require children and adults to Create, Invent, Compose, Predict, Plan, Construct, Design, Imagine, Propose, Devise, Formulate, Combine. To get brains HOT, you do need a LOT of material. The problem is when learning is only focused on remembering, understanding and applying (Lower Order Thinking); rather than analysing, evaluating and designing (Higher Order Thinking). Children need to be encouraged to use their knowledge rather than just learn by rote. Only then can children not only have a depth of knowledge but also be able to apply it.

I

Trust your gut feelings

am furious. Why you ask? Because my daughter slipped off some play equipment at day care three weeks ago and hurt her arm quite badly. We assumed it was broken so took her to emergency, waited for 7 hours and had various x-rays only to be told it was a bad sprain and to take her home. Over the course of the next three weeks she was in pain, favoured her left arm and it just didn’t seem right but we were told it was a bad sprain and would take weeks to heal so just ploughed on with it. As you do. Then this weekend we get a call from the hospital advising us they had made a mistake, our daughters arm was in fact fractured and she needed to come back to the hospital immediately. You can imagine what my husband and I thought. I was so cranky that my daughter has been in pain and we kept urging her to use her arm as it was just a sprain! So I head back to the hospital wait another 7 hours and more x-rays only to be told that it has already healed (albeit incorrectly) and that she should have full movement back in her arm in 6 to 12 months. Say what?! To think I was going to accept their mistake and just leave this for another 6-12 months hoping for the best was insanity. We now have a specialist appointment with an Orthopaedic Surgeon to determine if our daughter has to get her arm re-broken or go into intensive physio to get full movement back into her arm. I am just so cranky at our public health system for failing my family! I am angry with myself for taking their advice and believing it and I am furious that my two-year-old daughter has been in serious pain and now may have permanent damage to her right arm. My advice to every parent is that you know your children best. Get a second opinion if something doesn’t feel right.

BUSINESS matters

FINANCE MATTERS

Cash is King

I

t’s a very true adage ‘Cash is King’. Cash flow in any sized business is critical. Without it, businesses simply die. In these tight economic times, especially in some sectors where discretionary spending is limited like some parts of retail, maintaining the flow of cash through a business can be challenging. So if cash is something akin to a trickle in your business, what can you do to increase the flow? Here are some possibilities: • Know your business and track when money flows in and when it flows out. You have more control over when it flows out, so plan the outflow after the inflow. • Keep your bookkeeping up to date and know where you are at least weekly. • Plan ahead with your purchases. • Give customers a discount for paying quickly and on time. • Get payment at the time of purchase. • Keep on top of your receivables. This can difficult when other businesses

are doing it tough at the same time. Maybe it’s time to spend some money to make some money. Do potential customers know that you exist? Consider developing a marketing strategy to generate sales. While the list of what can be done is very long, the outcome you need is to either increase your income or cut and manage your expenses. Your first step could be to come along to a free one hour ‘Managing your cash flow’ workshop presented by The Greater Building Society on Tuesday, September 17 at 5.30pm at the Business Growth Centre. The workshop will explore many practical strategies and actions you can put into place to improve the cash position in your business. To register, phone 4942 3133 or visit www.mybgc.org.au. If cash is tight in your business, doing something is much better than doing nothing. Make attending this workshop your first step in doing something. There’s a lot to gain.

Estate Planning

A

t the risk of sounding morbid, have you thought about what will happen to your business and your family if you were no longer here? If you have a Will, that is a good start but what you may need is an Estate Plan. Family and business structures can be more complex than they once were, making estate planning even more important. An proper Estate Plan will look at things such as family trusts, payouts of superannuation balances and the tax implications for beneficiaries. It will ensure that the tax payable is minimised on the income and capital gains earned on assets. You also want to ensure the right amount of ownership and control of your assets passes to the people to whom you want it to pass. Your assets need to be protected if the beneficiary is involved in legal difficulties such as divorce or bankruptcy.

You need to have an Estate Plan that is clear enough to cut through any disagreement between your beneficiaries. A professional financial planner can be really helpful here. There are three key questions to have thought about before you see one: 1. Who gets what? Think about who will inherit which assets and in what proportions. 2. Have you accumulated sufficient assets to provide for your family and pay off debts if you die? Your financial planner should be able to recommend several ways to make up the shortfall. 3. Who’s in charge? Have you chosen someone to manage your affairs for you if you’re injured or sick and unable to control your investments? It is not a pleasant thing to think about but estate planning is not as painful as you may think. It should give you and your loved ones peace of mind that your wishes for your business and other assets will be respected.

irected by and starring genuine screen legend Robert Redford, this thriller features a stellar ensemble cast and a whip smart script that is sure to have you on the edge of your seat. After years in hiding, ex-Weather Underground militant, Nick Sloan aka Jim Grant (Redford), learns about his old compatriot’s arrest for a bank robbery turned deadly in the 1970s, which he is wanted as an accomplice. This puts the ambitious young local reporter, Ben Shepard (Shia LaBeouf), on the scent of a story that exposes Sloan as well. Sloan goes on the run while taking his daughter to safety. With that accomplished, Nick stays one step ahead of the FBI while pursuing a faint hope to clear his name. Also starring Julie Christie, Susan Sarandon, Chris Cooper, Nick Nolte and Terrence Howard, this is a taut thriller with plenty of intrigue.

here’s no denying that seminal Aussie pub rock band Hunters and Collectors have left an indelible mark on the Australian popular music landscape. From their early, powerful explorations into rock and arty, neo funk on albums such as ‘The Fireman’s Curse’ through to their evocative ballads such as ‘Throw Your Arms Around Me’, ‘The Hunnas’ could definitely write one hell of a song. This fact is illustrated perfectly on this collection of Hunnas tracks, interpreted by some of the best Aussie (and Eddie Vedder) talent going around. From Paul Kelly and Emma Donovan’s moving version of ‘True Tears of Joy’, through to Oh Mercy’s throbbing rendition of ‘The Slab’, this is truly an all-killer-nofiller tribute to one of Australia’s true gems. As an added bonus, disc two showcases the original tracks.

oung man (and woman), you don’t need to feel down. I said young man (and woman) because the Village People are in town. Yes that’s right, arguably the world’s campest singing sensation, The Village People are winging their way to Sydney, bringing with them Glenn Leonard’s Temptations and the former ladies of the Supremes in what promises to be one heck of an entertainment extravaganza. Selling more than 100 million recordings, the Village People, the ubiquitous Kings of Disco, were an instant phenomenon in the 70s and 80s with hits such as ‘YMCA’, ‘In the Navy’, ‘San Francisco’, ‘In Hollywood’, ‘Macho Man’, ‘Go West’ and ‘Can’t Stop the Music’ – not to mention those fabulous costumes. Glenn Leonard’s Temptations deliver the original Temptations sound like never before while Scherrie Payne and Lynda Laurence and genuine former members of the Motown signed and recorded Supremes and graciously endorsed by Diana Ross.

ith their massive sophomore album, ‘The Catalyst Fire’, threatening to out-wow their groundbreaking debut, ‘This Is the Warning’, it makes perfect sense that Brisbane’s Dead Letter Circus would want to embark on an equally massive tour to promote it. The band will be in town next month and frontman Kim Benzie told TE that a fresh crop of songs and a recent line-up change has kicked the band into overdrive. “Yeah man, we’re deep in rehearsals at the moment for the tour which is pretty soon,” Benzie said. “We’ve basically been nerding up on the songs for the past few months, so it should be a pretty wild show.” After releasing their critically-acclaimed debut long player (a peak, number two spot on the ARIA charts, gold record status, several hit singles and plum supports with the likes of Muse and Linkin Park), in 2011, it seemed as though the Brisbane five-piece had the world at their feet. However, a solid block of touring the album plus some untimely lineup changes, prompted a feeling of stagnation within the band, according to Kenzie, that was becoming hard to shake off.

“Yeah, I’d say our survivalist instinct kicked in,” he said. “We did a hell of a lot of touring off the back of the last one and we kind of got to a point where we thought, ‘well we can’t keep touring this album forever’. “Also, we had a line-up change after the last album [guitarist Scott Maric was replaced by Clint Vincent] and we were so focused on rebuilding that we got really far behind schedule.” With a batch of songs that were written on tour over the past 12 months, the band hunkered down with producer Forrester Savell and Benzie said while the recording process was quite intense, the band were over the moon with the result. “Yeah, it was quite intensive and full-on but I’d say that because of that, we’re even happier with how the album came out,” he said. “We wanted to make sure that this was an album of all killer – you know, not just an album with a few strong single songs. “Working with Forrester again was fantastic because he has been as much a part of the Dead Letter Circus journey as we have – I mean, he was the best man at my wedding,” Benzie said. “He really knows where we’re coming from and it’s a real family kind of vibe. Also, Clint, our new guitarist, used to be our tour manager, so we really are quite a tight-knit unit.” Catch Dead Letter Circus at the Cambridge Hotel on Saturday, September 7.

ot on the heels of a run of sold-out metropolitan dates in support of their sophomore long player ‘Singularity’, arguably Blacktown’s heaviest sons, Northlane, are gearing up to do it all again, this time hitting the regional centres. “Yeah, this one is more of a regional tour and we’re really looking forward to getting out there because the regional fans are our bread and butter – they are going to be awesome shows,” frontman Adrian Fitipaldes told TE. While Northlane certainly pricked up a few ears with their debut album, ‘Discoveries’, ‘Singularity’ showcases a band with a maturing musical sensibility. While definitely anchored in the metalcore camp, these guys are equally at home with the crunching riffs and sonic brutality as they are with creating space within all of the chaos. Fitipaldes said that while the band were really put to the test during the recording of the album, the end result was worth it. “It was all pretty much about trying to kill two birds with one stone,” he said. “We were in tour in Canada last year and we were really keen to record while we were over there to save going home and coming all the way back to record. So, after Canada, we went to New Jersey and recorded with William Putney [Four Year Strong, Thy Art Is Murder]. “We wrote most of the album on tour but when we got to the studio, we still had about three songs to write and Jon [Deiley, guitar], who writes the majority of the music, managed to write three awesome songs in three days which is a pretty amazing feat as it’s something that you just can’t force – you really do need to be in a good zone of inspiration.” So what about the album’s title? Anyone who has heard it will know that Northlane have more than one trick in their sonic palate. “Singularity refers to a point in time in the future where science and technology have advanced to a point that we just can’t conceive and I think that’s a cool metaphor for us,” he said. “Also, there is an alternate meaning that places importance on the individual – it’s about looking at not giving all your attention to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West and focusing on yourself.” Catch Northlane when they play at the Cambridge Hotel on Sunday, September 8.

n mid-2012, four young guys from Sydney came together with a singular goal in mind – to create some unabashed, righteous punk rock. The result was Born Lion, with their teeth bared and a roaring wall of sound complete with stabby chords, angular rhythms, hard beats and a dual vocal attack. The band’s latest track ‘D Is For Danger’ is no exception. It’s a howling helter skelter of pounding drums and churning riffs, hurtling along with an epic vengeance. On the back of the release of this sonic assault the boys are heading our way to blow the doors off the Great Northern. In less than a year, these youngbloods have made some serious

fRiday aUGUSt 30

noise, slaying three highly-lauded east coast tours and earning support slots with the likes of Gay Paris, Strangers as well as The Offspring, Tomahawk and Metallica on the Soundwave stage. Their previous singles were triumphs in their own right, earning much love from Triple J, FBI Radio, Triple R and Brisbane’s 4ZZZ. All of this culminated in the release of Born Lion’s debut EP in March this year. Born Lion’s assault on the Aussie scene shows no signs of slowing down. With a relentless touring schedule for the remainder of 2013, the fierceness and ferocity is sure to continue. Catch Born Lion when they play at the Great Northern on Wednesday, September 4.

A formidable young talent

W

hen it comes to enthusiastic young musicians doing their thing around the traps, they don’t come much more so than Central Coast-based singer/guitarist, Howard

Shearman. In the short time Shearman has been plying his musical trade, he has recorded two EPs and shared stages with a number of Aussie music luminaries such as Jon Stevens (Noiseworks), James Reyne (Australian Crawl) and Rai Thistlewayte (Thirsty Merc), to name a few. After clocking up gigs in more than 100 different venues, there’s no doubt that Shearman has developed the chops to entertain any audience. Also, with a covers set that reads like a who’s-who of popular music, this guy could well be described as a human jukebox. Catch Howard Shearman when he plays at the Swansea Hotel on Sunday, September 1.

f the rarified twang of country guitar floats your boat, then Stockton RSL is the place you’ll want to be when the Stockton Country Music Weekend kicks off next month. The extravaganza gets underway on Friday, September 6 with a country karaoke session to end all country karaoke sessions. If last year was anything to go by, with droves of warblers from across the Hunter region coming out of the woodwork to flaunt their country stylings, this year’s is going to be a cracker. The festivities will resume at 10am on Saturday, September 7 when the club’s car park is transformed into a market ground while the adjacent paddock will be the place to be for the whole family with pony rides, a bucking bull, a five-inone combo castle and jumping castle. The club will also be buzzing with line dancing from 1pm including a long line that will weave its way around the club.

Anyone is welcome to join the line and money raised from the initiative will go to help local resident Debbie Lindsay who is currently battling melanoma. Saturday night is when the real darn tootin’ country fun starts when Adam Price kicks off the Hoe Down Saturday from 5pm before Newcastle’s own 2008 Telstra Road to Tamworth winner, Mark Wells (pictured), hits the stage with his five-piece band. Anyone that has heard Wells’ brilliant debut long player ‘The Long Walk Home’ will know that this is one guy destined for great things. Sunday is market day again until 2pm and the afternoon will keep building to a country crescendo with the Rob Cass Duo and then the dulcet and rocking tones of The Apprentices, featuring four female lead singers and a four-piece band. The Stockton Country Music Weekend will be on at Stockton RSL from Friday, September 6 to Sunday, September 8.

cauliflower cream – yet another knockout. The delicate shellfish was seared to perfection and would have been a divine entrée themselves but, combined with the crisp slices of smoky chorizo and confit potato, this dish had a complexity and balance of flavour to write home about. The curried cauliflower puree added a nuttiness and welcome warmth. While several options on the a la carte menu tempted, I decided on the crispy skin Barramundi from the specials menu for main. The skin on this expertly cooked piece of fish was so crisp that it almost shattered like glass while the flesh was soft and creamy as it should be. The addition of a mouth watering garlic and parsley mash and a hedonistic champagne butter sauce had me wishing this dish would never end. My dining partner’s rosemary crusted lamb rump took the idea of a lamb roast to the next level. The flavourful crust in no way competed with the lamb and the dish was augmented with a sheppard’s pie tart and some wilted spinach and a rich red wine jus. Gorgeous. I finished off proceedings with one of the best desserts I’ve had in quite a while – a frozen tiramisu parfait. A rich chocolate base set the tone for this dessert and all the flavours of a classic tiramisu were here but stepped up a notch with the addition of a delicious white chocolate ice cream. My dining partner chose the limoncello and kaffir lime crème brulee and, from the welcome crack of the toffee to the zing of the custard, this was a perfect end to a memorable meal.

ilano’s on the Lake is possibly the most honest description of location imaginable. This restaurant is not situated ‘near’ Lake Macquarie with distant glimpses of its beauty. Milano’s is, quite literally, at the edge of the water, which makes it the perfect location for that special occasion or a catch up with old friends. After being greeted by the friendly wait staff, my dining partner and I commenced our Milano’s experience with some bruschetta. This simple yet flavourful dish was a joy from start to finish. Perfectly toasted sourdough was spread with a colourful pesto, then topped with a zesty tomato salsa and some succulently smooth and creamy fetta. Every ingredient was given its chance to shine. With entrées on the agenda I decided on the salmon, prawn and lobster ravioli, served with a thyme-scented pea puree, crab butter sauce and a tempura bug tail. The generously portioned ravioli was filled with a mouth-watering and perfectly cooked combination of fresh salmon, prawn and lobster and a heavenly crab butter sauce really made this dish sing. The addition of the tempura bug tail added some nice contrasting textures. This dish will definitely live long in the memory. My dining partner decided on the seared scallops with crispy chorizo, confit potato and curried

hen it comes to sheer oldfashioned ‘sticktoitiveness’ in the music business, there are few who can rival the tenacity of Herman’s Hermits drummer Barry Whitwam. Whitwam has been flying the Herman’s Hermits flag consistently since joining the band as a fresh-faced 17-year-old Manchester lad and as the only original member in the current Hermits line up, will be making his umpteenth dozen trip to Newcastle this week. “I’m just still totally in love with the music,” Whitwam told TE. “We’re doing 180 shows this year and next year we’ll be doing 200 with two more trips to Australia planned, so we’re definitely still keeping busy.” No strangers to the road, when Hermans Hermits released their debut single, ‘I’m Into Something Good’ in August 1964, they were propelled into the stratosphere as part of the iconic Great British Invasion of America in 1964-65. For Whitwam, who had trained as a ladies’ hairdresser, this sudden superstardom came as a complete shock. “We did our first tour of America in 1965 when I was just 18 as the only English band on Dick Clark’s Caravan of Stars,”

he said. “‘Mrs Brown You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter’ was just released in America and, about halfway through the tour, it hit number one and all of our lives changed overnight.” While Whitwam said there was a sense of camaraderie and healthy competition between many of the British Invasion bands, it wasn’t all sunshine and lollipops – especially when the Rolling Stones were concerned. “We were playing a show in Philadelphia and the Stones were on the same bill,” he said. “Andrew Loog Oldham [Stones manager] was a complete hardcase and he insisted, despite Herman’s Hermits being more popular at the time, that his band headline. Anyway, he won the day, but we said to them ‘there are 15,000 people here – 10,000 for us and 5,000 for the Stones. We’ll go on first if you give our fans half an hour to leave before the Stones go on.’ “So we played our show and afterwards all of our fans did leave, but the whole time we were playing, the Stones, Mick and Keith included, were standing in the wings shouting some quite vulgar epithets at us which wasn’t very nice at all, but I guess that’s rock and roll.” Catch Herman’s Hermits at Wests New Lambton on Wednesday, September 5 and Toronto Workers Club on Friday, September 7.

rish singer Brian Kennedy has certainly packed a fair bit into his 46 years. From humble beginnings on Belfast’s Falls Road, to playing Madison Square Garden alongside the legendary Van Morrison, nobody could accuse Kennedy of resting on his laurels. Off the back of his latest album, ‘Voice’, Kennedy will be heading to Newcastle and he told TE that he couldn’t wait to give Australian audiences a taste of the new album. “It really is the honeymoon period for me at the moment, having just released ‘Voice’ and having the opportunity to travel down to Australia is just the icing on the cake,” he said. The over-arching theme of the album is one of positivity – as typified in the moving and triumphant single, ‘Best Days’. “For me, ‘Best Days’ is an antirecession song,” he explained. “I think the message is that when the chips are down it’s important to remember what makes us strong and I hope that if someone is having a crap day, and their driving along in their car and the song comes on, it might lift their spirits just a bit.” Perhaps best known for his performance of ‘You Raise Me Up’ with the Irish-Norwegian duo Secret Garden, Kennedy first came to prominence after

being invited to be a featured singer as part of Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison’s Blues and Soul Revue – a gig that saw Kennedy perform alongside such heavy hitters as Bob Dylan. “I was asked to sing a song of Van’s at a charity thing which he heard and he asked me to come on tour with him,” he said. “That ended up lasting for six years and I got to meet and perform with some of the most amazing people. I’d say that the best thing I learned from Van is that you’re only as good as your last performance – you really do have to give it your all every night.” Kennedy has been able to parlay that success into a formidable career that has seen him release 10 albums, snag a gig as a vocal coach on ‘The Voice Ireland’ as well as representing his country in the iconic ‘Eurovision’ contest. “A soon as I arrived in Athens I stopped being Brian Kennedy and became Ireland. It was like ‘oh, look over there, it’s Ireland’. “But I don’t care who you are, singing at Eurovision is definitely the campest thing you’re ever going to do.” Catch Brian Kennedy at Lizotte’s on Tuesday, September 10.

ocated on the second floor of Regatta Quays, this threebedroom apartment is located close to the convenience of Honeysuckle, the Newcastle CBD and the beach. The apartment has three bedrooms, all with built-in wardrobes and access to the balcony that overlooks

he number of properties being listed on the market is the issue at hand for the property market, not the upcoming election. Much has been reported lately about the impact of elections on the property market, but low stock volumes are dampening activity across the board. There is as much evidence to support the belief that elections slow both the property market and prices growth as there is to say that they stimulate activity and generate growth, depending on which research you want to consider. Regardless of which party is triumphant in the election, the market will react accordingly and level out. But, there has been, and continues to be, a chronic shortage of supply, with properties selling almost as soon as they are listed. Cashed up buyers and pent up demand, coupled with the market bottoming out, should see increased activity in the field, but there are so few properties being listed for sale or auction that even for those in a position to buy, there isn’t much stock available. It is up to our political leaders to do their part in ensuring Australia’s property market continues to strengthen, becoming more resilient to global and domestic influences.

Whichever party is in power, leading up to or after the election, the property market still requires grants and incentives to be nationally co-ordinated. Plus, it’s vital these are aimed at both established and new homes so the construction industry is supported and affordability is further improved at every level. Conditions are optimal with historically low interest rates, excellent affordability and improved consumer sentiment – the only thing missing is a product. Because property is a key economic driver, it is imperative it be given appropriate support at all levels. Buyers and vendors also need to do their bit by becoming more realistic and adjusting their price expectations. There is a great deal of pent up demand out there at the moment, with buyers waiting for prices to get lower, but until they start being active again, sellers are also holding off putting their properties on the market, so the cycle never ends. Something has to give, and while the government is a good place to start, the election is not the answer. An active market is the only way to achieve prices that have been market determined, and this will only be done when everyone works together and does their bit.

NEWCASTLE DISTRICT BOWLS REPORT with Denis Broad, OAM

T

Mattara results show depth of local talent

he 53rd Annual Newcastle Mattara Bowls Carnival came to a successful conclusion last Friday with the playing of the semi-finals and finals at Kotara Bowling Club. The Alder Park trio of Blair Perry, Allan Miller and Martin Ball had the honour of winning the Club’s inaugural Frank Neat Memorial Classic K.O Mens Triples title. They recovered from a 13/2 deficit after 8 ends to beat the Raymond Terrace combination of Ian Lean, Australian representative Matthew Baus and Lennon Scott 25/23. A thrilling Mens Fours final resulted in a 15/14 victory to the composite side of Jason Banks, Tony Atcheson (Mayfield West), Frank Botham (Windale/Gateshead) and Shannon Rowe (Redhead) over the Charlestown quartet of Arthur Clement, Phillip Garry, Ross Brodbeck and David Stuart. Stuart narrowly missed sending the match into overtime scoring 2 shots on the last end and narrowly missed with an on shot with his last bowl

which would have given him a third shot. Tony Ellercamp (Raymond Terrace) and Clint Doust (East Cessnock) convincingly won the Mens Open Pairs final defeating Owen Jefferson (Valentine) and Vic Papworth (Water Board) 20/5. Ron Kemp and Rex Draper (Boolaroo) were impressive Mens Restricted Pairs victors downing Belmont’s John Murray and Joe Taylor 33/16 in the final. Valentine’s Cheryl Shaw, who has only been playing bowls for one month, combined brilliantly with Michael Beesley (Beresfield) to beat Val Fullick and Kieran Lott (Kotara) 26/14 in the Mixed Pairs decider. Raymond Terrace will next Saturday host the final of the prestigious Champion of Club Champions Singles with Brett Gemmell (Lowlands) opposed to Ian Lean (Raymond Terrace). That’s all for this week. Remember to get out onto the green and enjoy your bowls. Till next week.

Team’s triumphant return

Young athletes bring home 11 medals from Children’s Games campaign

T

he young athletes of Team Lake Macquarie received a warm welcome home last Wednesday after a successful week of competition at the International Children’s Games in Windsor, Canada. The team brought home 11 medals in total – five gold, five silver, and one bronze – making Windsor Lake Macquarie’s most successful Games since joining the competition in 2008. Athletics proved to be Team Lake Macquarie’s strong suit throughout the Games, securing a total of eight medals over four events. A fumbled change from the Oakland, California team in Girls 4 x 100-metre relay event saw Isobel Warby, Bernice de Jager, Grace Weir and Emma-Sue Greentree take home gold. “We had the fastest qualifying time in the heats so we were going really well and we were quite confident going into the final,” Miss Warby said. “We were confident about getting in the top four but we didn’t think we were going to win it, but it all came together on the day,” Miss Weir added. Gymnasts Bailey Sansom, William Bradley and Peter Newell fought off a few nerves and stiff competition to secure silver in the Boys team event. “I was really nervous because in the training beforehand all the athletes from across the world were training and they were really, really good but it was a good comp and we came home with a silver medal so we were all really happy,” Mr Sansom said.

Medal recipients Bailey Sansom, William Bradley, Peter Newell – Boys gymnastics (Silver) Emma-Sue Greentree – Girls high jump, 1.70m (Gold) Grace Weir – Girls high jump, 1.67m (Bronze) Isobel Warby – Girls long jump, 5.50m (Silver)

Also returning to Lake Macquarie is the International Children’s Games flag, which was presented to Lake Macquarie Mayor, Jodie Harrison, at the Windsor closing ceremony and will be housed in the Lake Macquarie council

chamber until the Lake Macquarie International Children’s Games kick off next year. Lake Macquarie will host the 2014 International Children’s Games from December 6 to 11.

Isobel Warby, Bernice de Jager, Grace Weir, Emma-Sue Greentree – Girls 4 x 100m relay (Gold) Matteo Mazzantini – Boys high jump, 1.65m (Silver)
