ederal School Education Minister, Peter Garrett, was in town last week visiting local public schools to spruik the Government’s Gonski reforms. Mr Garrett made an appearance at both Woodberry and Waratah Public Schools with local member, Sharon Grierson, and the Labor candidate for Newcastle, Sharon Claydon, to talk to teachers about

the Government’s National Plan for School Improvement. Under the plan, NSW schools will receive an extra $1.6 million per school on average over the next six years. “Extra investment will be permanently locked in to the funding system, so that schools will know that they will have enough money to support their students and continue with great programs like ‘Focus on Reading’,” Mr Garrett explained. “Our plan will also deliver higher teacher training standards, more

support for early years reading, more local decision-making and better information for parents.” The Minister was quick to point out the potential loss of funding he said could occur under a Coalition Government. “New data reveals that over the next 6 years, government schools across the state would lose a total of around $3.6 billion, the equivalent of $1.7 million per school on average [and] non-government schools would lose a total of around $7.6 million or $800,000 per school on average,” Mr

Garrett explained. “This is the result of lower indexation and the Coalition’s refusal to guarantee the extra school funding on offer.” The visit came a day after the Opposition’s Education Spokesperson, Christopher Pyne, criticised NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell for being “conned” by the Federal Government and urged him to pull out of the Gonski agreement. “I think NSW has signed up to a very bad deal,” Mr Pyne said. @triciamorosin

ducation funding seemed to be one of the hot topics of the past week, and this was particularly so in the Hunter with School Education Minister Peter Garrett’s visit to Waratah Public to spruik the Government’s $7 billion Gonski funding reforms. Mr Garrett spoke to teachers, parents and students about the changes to the system that the funding injection would achieve. The visit was part of a blitz by Government MPs to highlight the issue of school funding, one of the big differences in policy terms between the Government and the Coalition. The Coalition has stated it won’t support Gonski if it wins the election, saying instead it will seek a new deal with the States focusing on teacher performance. Many people in the community would agree that education deserves more funding. It is one of those areas, like healthcare and infrastructure, that would benefit from unlimited resources – something that realistically, government’s cannot do. Come September, we get to make a decision about what we want our education system to be in the future. By knowing what is on offer, we can make an educated decision.

Tour sees budding scientists identify the issues facing our waterways

rmed with clipboards and a knowledge of environmental issues, forty students from five schools across Newcastle travelled around the Throsby Creek catchment earlier this month to determine the health of the local waterway. Part of a full-day ‘Catchment Safari’ organised by the Hunter-Central Rivers Catchment Management Authority (CMA), the students from Islington, Carrington, Tighes Hill, Hamilton Public Schools and Hunter School of Performing Arts applied their classroom knowledge about environmental issues to what they saw of the catchment. “Despite the chilly start, the students had a great time outside doing scientific activities such as water testing and habitat assessments,” Learning Engagement Officer, Amanda Burrows, from the CMA and Department of Education and Communities (DEC) explained. “Starting at Blackbutt Reserve, at the top of the catchment, the students learnt to test pH, temperature and turbidity (murkiness) before making their way down the catchment.” At Chin-Chen Street in Islington, the group inspected Hunter Water’s gross pollutant trap. “The students counted ten tennis balls in the trap, which they suspected came from school playgrounds,” Mrs Burrows said.

Kevin ’16 makes his intentions known, amid other announcements

evin Rudd was back in the spotlight last week, declaring that he’s changed his mind on same-sex marriage. This is despite opposing it when he was Prime Minister – when he actually could have wielded some real influence. With a 2,000 word blog on his website, he explained that his epiphany came after meeting up with a gay staffer who’d had to reconcile his sexuality and strong Pentecostal faith.

A seemingly innocuous press conference followed, and with a few flicks of the hair and few cheesy lines, K Rudd (as he likes to refer to himself), was back. Journalists haven’t been treated to “Are you ready to Rock and Roll?” or “It’s time to zip” for quite a while now. These Ruddisms amuse the press gallery – but would, no doubt, annoy the Prime Minister. Any seasoned Rudd watcher knows that Tuesday’s media appearance was as much

about his leadership as it was gay marriage. Make no mistake – Rudd has not given up his leadership ambition. That little ‘backflip’ exercise was to remind everyone he’s not going anywhere and again highlight the differences between him and his nemesis, Julia Gillard. Gillard doesn’t support same-sex marriage – and many question why. She’s a modern woman that’s pursued her career to the top, sacrificed having a family of her own, living in The Lodge out of wedlock and she’s an atheist. But, she doesn’t support Gay Marriage. Huh? She’s also ignored what could have been a great Labor legacy – I think personal beliefs

have given way to her political radar. Truth is, I don’t think Julia Gillard wants to have a fight with a conservative, deeply religious Opposition Leader in Tony Abbott. There’s a void of leadership on her part because of this issue – and Kevin Rudd has seized it, and grabbed it with both hands. There’s no chance that his leadership can be revived for this election. That ship has sailed. But Kevin from Queensland is playing the long game – he sees himself as Prime Minister (again). Kevin 07 doesn’t quite have the same ring to it as Kevin ’16, but you can be sure he’ll be working on a new catchphrase for the next 3 years.

Hunter digs deep: Salvos happy with Doorknock appeal

ewcastle and Lake Macquarie residents dug deep to help others in the community over the weekend by donating to the annual Red Shield Appeal in bigger volumes than previous years. Salvation Army Hunter Appeal director Rodney Dibley said counting was continuing but collections across the Hunter were up by four per cent on last year, with almost $250,000 collected across the weekend. Mr Dibley thanked the community

for their generous support and the 1,500 volunteer doorknockers that collected. The doorknockers included a little red army of 75 Greater Building Society staff including CEO Don Magin and his executive team. Mr Dibley said the funds collected were urgently needed to help local people ahead of winter. “A survey of 2,705 Salvation Army clients shows more than half of them have gone without meals, sometimes in favour of their children,” Mr Dibley said. Amy Pene from Elegant Blooms collects for the Appeal

“Also, more than a quarter of clients cannot afford heating in just one room of the house,” he said. The Salvos are aiming to raise a total of $380,000 from the Appeal in the Hunter. Mr Dibley said The Salvos will spend almost $9 million on services in the Hunter over the year. I will always remember being tired and weary at the end of a night shift and a refreshed and vibrant Tony would walk into the station and greet us with the same phrase, “How the devil are you?”. Irrespective of what had happened overnight, the sight of Tony was an instant pickup and he would always depart with the equally memorable phrase of “Livin’ the dream!”. It is a privilege to resume writing this column and continue Tony’s legacy of building the relationship between the police and the community. There appears to have been a spike in collisions between bicycle riders and cars in recent weeks. Regrettably, a cyclist will always come off second best and there have been several accidents resulting in fatalities. It is important to remember that the road is there to share and all road users have an obligation to be considerate. The matter that needs to be highlighted is the need for drivers

Is it any wonder when the driver had a can of drink in one hand, a cigarette in the other while holding the steering wheel and a mobile phone pressed between shoulder and ear? There’s no doubt some cyclists flout the road rules and place themselves in precarious positions, but a collision between a car and a bicycle is always going to end one way. The next time you become distracted when driving, think about the consequences of a lapse of concentration you can never take back.

Servo hold-up: Police appeal for information

olice are appealing for information after the armed robbery of a service station in West Wallsend on Saturday. At about 8:10pm, three men travelling in a dark utility entered the Withers Street service station and put fuel and water into the vehicle. Two of the men entered the service station, one of whom threatened the console operator with a knife and demanded money. The male console operator handed over a sum of cash. The men left the service station, and

drove away in the utility, which was last seen travelling south in Withers Street, towards Edgeworth. The first man was wearing a dark coloured jumper with an orange/red motif on the front, while the second man was wearing a blue and grey jumper with the number ‘60’ displayed on the front. Anyone who may be able to offer information about the incident that could assist Lake Macquarie police is being asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

nergy Hunter is an energy efficiency information program for small and medium-sized businesses in the Newcastle and Hunter Region. Using the combined skills and networks of the Hunter Business Chamber, The City of Newcastle and Hunter TAFE, Energy Hunter assists businesses to manage, identify and improve their electricity consumption, thus saving money by becoming more energy efficient. Energy Hunter is funded through a $1.2 million Energy Efficiency Information Grant from the Australian Government. The program is delivered over three stages, with The City of Newcastle responsible for the Living Laboratory component. Through the Living Laboratory, The City of Newcastle will provide a number of great benefits to 500 businesses in the Hunter region, including: • Free electricity monitoring, either through an online subscription to WebGraphs or installing an electricity display onsite • One-on-one tailored assistance for businesses to work through Council’s ClimateCam framework and identify energy reduction opportunities

Smart savings: App tracks energy consumption

new smartphone app being trialled by EnergyAustralia gives households the ability to monitor their energy use remotely with consumption updates every 20 seconds. EnergyAustralia Group Executive Manager, Retail, Adrian Merrick said the app provided customers an easier way to understand and take control of their electricity costs. “This app gives customers the most current information we can provide, so they can have more control and greater

power over their electricity use.” It also provides a bill estimation, which is updated daily, allowing customers to set quarterly dollar targets and track how much they spend against this target. The app is available to selected trial participants who have access to the EnergyAustralia’s PowerSmartOnline portal, a web tool giving customers information on their household electricity use. Creating a safe community

ouncil is committed to providing a safe community now and into the future. It is important to consider all risks facing our community and environment, including preparing long-term plans to address future flood risks. I want to be clear that no decisions have been made. There is no plan in place. We are just beginning to work with the community to establish the best course of action in the future and importantly what will be the thresholds for action. Council will hold community workshops with residents, businesses and industry, government agencies and community groups on how they can be involved in managing flood risk within the city. By starting the process early, there is plenty of time to identify and plan for future flood risks. The plans we eventually create for each local area with potential flood risk, will guide decisions on things like how Council designs and maintains roads and drainage, makes buildings safe and manages erosion. These plans are “what if” plans and will be developed with the community. The plans will have to be flexible and

adaptable to changing information. Possible flood management options which might be considered in future plans include property modification measures using flood-proof building materials, raising floor heights or adaptable building designs; flood modification measures to change the extent of the flood such as levees or sea walls; flood response measures such as flood warning systems and community response plans; and of course good planning. Before we adopt any option, preferences will be developed in full consultation with the community. Lake Macquarie is not alone in this issue; twenty-nine NSW coastal councils have done flood or coastal hazard studies in accordance with the NSW Government’s current guide on How to Incorporate Sea Level Rise Benchmarks in Flood Risk Assessments. However, Lake Macquarie City Council is a national leader in Local Government in preparing to adapt to likely impacts from sea level rise and other climate changes. It’s really about the safety of our community and ensuring our city’s infrastructure allows residents to continue to enjoy living in Lake Macquarie for many generations to come.

niversity of Newcastle Creative Writing PhD graduate Michael Sala will this week go head to head with writers from across the world vying for top honours in the Commonwealth Book Prize. Dr Sala’s semi-autobiographical debut novel, The Last Thread, has already picked up the regional title of the Commonwealth Book Prize and the NSW Premier’s Award for New Writing. “It feels great,” Dr Sala said on winning the two awards. “It’s really exciting to win two awards so close together because with one you feel like maybe it’s just a fluke!”

He joins the likes of writers such as Christos Tsiolkas, whose acclaimed novel The Slap was awarded the Regional Title of the Commonwealth Book Prize in 2009. This week, The Last Thread will be up against books written by authors from four other Commonwealth countries with each writer competing for the title of Overall Winner in the Commonwealth Book Prize. Dr Sala was quietly confident about his chances. “Well, I guess everyone’s got a chance don’t they?” he said. The Overall Winner of the Commonwealth Book Prize will receive £10,000 in prize money. niversity of Newcastle Bachelor of Medicine student, Mohamed Ehsan Ebrahim, has been named the NSW Higher Education International Student of the Year by the State Government. Deputy Premier and Minister for Trade and Investment, Andrew Stoner, presented Mohamed with the prestigious award at NSW Parliament House earlier this month. “Mohamed’s achievements are a great example of how talented individuals from overseas can benefit from and contribute to an education here in NSW,” Mr Stoner said of the Malaysian student. According to Mr Stoner, since arriving at the University of Newcastle in 2007, Mohamed has balanced a demanding Bachelor of Medicine program with a wide range of community roles. He has advocated for the rights of international students, represented the interests of Muslim and international students on various student bodies, and worked tirelessly to break down misperceptions between Muslims and non-Muslims in the community. University of Newcastle’s Deputy ViceChancellor (Academic), Professor Andrew Parfitt, also congratulated the 25-year-old on his achievement. “Mohamed’s efforts to represent the interests of international students, as well as his work to increase cross-cultural understanding between Muslims and

Paras Pappas will cycle for charity in Cambodia

ewcastle woman Paras Pappas hasn’t been on a bike much since she was a kid, but next month she will cycle 325-kilometres around Cambodia to help raise funds to improve financial literacy among Cambodians. Ms Pappas, 37, who works in the Greater Building Society’s property department, was one of only nine people selected from Australian credit union and building societies to participate in the 13-day 2013 Credit Union Foundation Australia (CUFA) Cambodian Leadership Challenge in early June. Her first trip to Cambodia, the bike ride will take Ms Pappas from the capital Siem Reap through the Cambodian countryside as well as to the wonder of the world, Angkor Wat.

“The trip will definitely take me out of my comfort zone, but I am always up for a challenge,” she said. “Hopefully I will be able to help some Cambodian children and their fledgling financial institutions to improve financial literacy so people have a better future.” Before taking off to Cambodia, Ms Pappas is required to raise at least $3,300 to contribute to Cambodian communities through the Children’s Financial Literacy Program, which teaches thousands of children the importance of saving for things such as new school uniforms. Flood-plagued Cessnock Road at Testers Hollow

oads and Maritime Services (RMS) will carry out investigations on Cessnock Road at Testers Hollow to determine what sort of upgrade could be instated to flood-proof the notorious road. The news comes despite claims from the RMS in March that the road did not need to be upgraded due to the infrequency of flooding on the road. The road was inundated during heavy rains in early March this year, cutting off the main thoroughfare connecting Maitland to the F3 and Cessnock for a week, causing Maitland City Council and Cessnock City Council to write to the RMS and the NSW Roads Minister requesting

action be taken to address the issue. Maitland MP Robyn Parker said more traffic can be anticipated on the road when the Hunter Expressway opens at the end of the year. “This is an important route which links the Hunter Expressway Kurri Kurri interchange with Maitland,” she said. “More than 800 vehicles use the road at Testers Hollow every day and based on traffic modelling studies carried out recently this is set to increase when the Hunter Expressway opens around the end of this year.” The RMS Investigations will include reviewing a flood study carried out by Cessnock City Council, a detailed survey of the road and preliminary design work for proposed options and are expected to be completed in September. @amelia_parrott

Cholesterol and exercise

f you are trying to lower your cholesterol, are on cholesterol lowering medication and also trying to do some exercise to improve your fitness, the fact is that you may be not getting the benefits you should from your extra activity. A new study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, shows that simvastatin, a cholesterol-lowering statin drug , seemed to “block the ability of exercise to improve…fitness levels” among people who are overweight or obese, researcher John Thyfault, an associate professor of nutrition and exercise physiology at the University of Missouri, wrote. “Statins have only been used for about 15 to 20 years, so we don’t know what the long-term effects,” Thyfault said. “If the drugs cause complications with improving or maintaining fitness, not everyone should be prescribed statins.” The study was conducted with 37 people between ages 25 and 59, all of whom were obese and had low fitness levels. Over 12 weeks, everyone participated in a fitness program; with about half of the participants also taking 40 milligrams of simvastatin every day.

Researchers found that the participants taking the simvastatin experienced less benefit from the exercise than those who didn’t take the drug. For example, those who took the statins had a 1.5 per cent increase in cardiorespiratory fitness after the fitness regimen, compared with a 10 per cent increase among those who didn’t take the statins. There are many studies showing other side effects of statins and that many people have to stop taking them because of side effects. Patients should still proceed with caution when considering statins, says Dr. Barbara Roberts, director of the Women’s Cardiac Center at Miriam Hospital in Rhode Island, and author of ‘The Truth About Statins’. Studies have not shown that statins help women who don’t already have heart disease, even if they have risk factors like obesity and family history, she says. That’s compared to a recent study that found a 30 per cent reduction in heart attacks in people who follow a Mediterranean diet. Like anything to do with your fitness or health, trust your intuition, ask questions about anything you are putting in your body and always get a second opinion.

fter all the colour that we wore this summer, you would expect some of it to stay around for the colder months. Surprisingly, it is just the opposite; this season’s hottest trend is completely colourless. Wearing black and white has always been a part of the fashion industry and I wouldn’t be surprised if every man, woman and child had at least one black item and one white one in their wardrobes. I often go to my black and white clothes when I have nothing else to wear or when I don’t really feel like standing out – black and white tends to be my backup plan. When I think of these colours I think simple, boring and easy to pull off. But the trend this season is anything but plain! Think wild, geometric patterns, thick stripes, checks, bold accessories and statement pieces, all of them monochrome. This season, the two colours, black and white, are being treated as one. You can’t just wear one without the other, they should be worn together. What is really great about this trend

is that you can make it your own by choosing patterns, accessories and clothing types that suit your personal style. You can stay on-trend without changing anything about yourself. Don’t be afraid to make it your own. Switching from wearing colour one season to eliminating it altogether is never easy. Don’t feel like it has to be this way, as you can still add colour to your outfit whilst keeping the monochrome trend as the highlight. For example, why not team a geometric monochrome print dress with some colourful accessories like a scarf, shoes or handbag. With any new trend, if it is something you are a little hesitant to try, start off small. Add some unobtrusive monochrome accessories to your usual outfits or just start with a top or a pair of shoes. It can be a big thing to go all out at once, but sometimes that can make it easier to adopt a new trend as your own. If you have a night out coming up, why not use it as an excuse to try the new trend!

’m passionate about democracy. For many young people, Saturday September 14 will be their first opportunity to vote. For others, Election Day is simply another trip to the local school or community centre to cast their ballot. Regardless of whether September 14 will be your first election or not, voting is a critical component of our democracy. Sadly, however, the opinions of young people are highly unrepresented at the polls. In fact, in 2009, the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) estimated that approximately 320,000, or 20 per cent of young people aged 18-25 years were not properly enrolled to vote. This is an incredibly large and worrying number for anyone concerned about the health of our democracy. In Australia voting is compulsory and young people can enrol to vote from the age of 17. Earlier this year, the Government announced that in the future all Australians will automatically be enrolled to vote using information obtained from Medicare, the tax office and other government agencies. This will

mean all Australians will have the opportunity to have their say about our future. For now however, enrolling to vote remains a manual process and is as easy as filling out an AEC Enrolment Form or visiting aec.gov.au/enrol. As Election Day draws closer, there is no doubt that young people need to be taking full advantage of our participatory democracy, not just by voting but also by scrutinising all candidates as they outline their policies for education, the environment, jobs and other issues that will affect our future. As a young person I know that voting is not just a hard won right, but a responsibility that all Australians should take seriously. Young people in particular must use this opportunity to have their say about what sort of future they want to grow up in, to study and to work in, to raise a family in, and one day, to grow old in. This is the only way we can live in a society which values the ideas and opinions of all Australians, ensuring decision makers remain accountable in creating our shared future.

As your career progresses, you will start to get contacted and thanked by ex-pupils for your efforts. Consider the number of successful people in business, politics and show business that remember particular teachers for encouraging and inspiring them. You can become a teacher through an Undergraduate degree, or if you already have a degree, then through a two-year Master of Teaching postgraduate degree. The University of Newcastle is in the top 130 schools in the world for studying Education (no mean feat, considering there are over 17,000 Universities in the world). If you want to make a real difference, then consider training for one of the best jobs in the world at one of the best Universities in the world.

Treating bowel issues

fter the cough/ cold and pain relief departments, the next most frequented area in pharmacies is probably that where products for ‘bums and tums’ are kept. It’s really not so surprising because symptoms of nausea, indigestion and gastrooesophageal reflux are experienced by most of us at some stage. Also diarrhoea and constipation are quite common, and when they occur, are always annoying and uncomfortable. In most instances, simple nonprescription treatments will help. Fortunately these symptoms are often short lived – they are associated with so-called self-limiting conditions – but, when they are long lasting and associated with chronic conditions, they can be much more distressing. Identification of the cause of continuing bowel problems is an important first step in deciding on a treatment strategy.

Medication is sometimes required – often prescription medicines – but in any event non-medication therapy – including dietary and stress management advice, works. For instance, there is no effective medication treatment for coeliac (pronounced seelee-ak) disease, but a simple adjustment to diet can mean a life completely free of symptoms. Symptoms of coeliac disease are not always readily evident; and when they do occur they can be vague and similar to (and therefore mistaken for) other bowel problems such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). The importance of family traditions

am currently reading a book called ‘The Happiness Project’ by Gretchen Rubin. In a nutshell, Gretchen embarks on a yearlong project to test drive wisdom, research and lessons from popular culture about how to be happier. I am up to ‘April – Lighten Up – Parenthood’ and a particular segment in this chapter caught my attention: Family Traditions. As I was reading about all the little traditions they had and the new ones Gretchen was creating for her family, it got me thinking about my own family traditions and how important they are. Some of ours include: 1. Morning Sing Along – the children hop into bed with us each morning and I sing them what I call the ‘good morning’ song (not very original). This is what my mum used to do with us and I have very fond memories of those mornings singing together. 2. Adventure Time (real or otherwise) – the real adventures include us going on a monster hunt through the local forest or on an outing for the day where we explore different areas and learn new things. The ‘imaginative’ ones usually take place when we have to sit still for a while (a doctor’s surgery or airport). We all sit there and make up these fabulous adventures. I ask my children, ‘What adventure are we going on today?’ and my son will choose a space adventure or we end up in a land

of fairies and we each tell part of the story. This is so much fun. The children love it and actively ask when our next will be. The best part for me is indulging in their incredible imaginations. 3. Sleep Over – this is a new one for us (we are up to our 3rd sleep over) and this simply involves us setting up a makeshift bed in our lounge room for all of us. The children choose a movie each, we make pop corn, turn off the lights and snuggle up to watch their movies. This is the only night they are allowed to stay up late (so it typically happens on the weekend) 4. Bedtime Story – this is one tradition (like my good morning song) that I have had since the children were born. Every night either my husband or I read a book to them when they go to bed. ind of like a cross between Brian Da Palma’s ‘The Untouchables’ and pretty much any Elmore Leonard novel (‘Cold Six Thousand’, ‘White Jazz’, ‘LA Confidential’ et al), Gangster Squad, while an enjoyable distraction, fails to live up to the dizzying heights achieved by both Da Palma and Leonard. Based on a true story, Gangster Squad revolves around real life Jewish crime boss Mickey Cohen (the antagonist in many of Leonard’s novels) and the men who seek to bring him down. It’s 1949 LA, and Cohen (Sean Penn) wants to control all criminal activity in the city. He has bought local judges and police, and no-one is willing to cross him or testify against him. Everyone except Seargant John O’Mara (Josh Brolin), World War II vet. The Chief of Police decides to form a special unit whose mission is to take down Cohen, choosing battle weary O’Mara to lead the unit.

iven that I have been a fan of The National since their 2003 long player ‘Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers’ found its way onto my turntable, I really wanted to like ‘Trouble Will Find Me’. The trouble is, Matt Berninger and co have created something that is almost devoid of anything I found exciting about The National on the aforementioned ‘Sad Songs’, and their classic sets ‘Alligator’ and ‘High Violet’. While wags are sure to ruminate on the lyrical and musical depth of the record, for mine, it comes off as more than a tad pretentious. Sure, The National have always been known for creating maudlin-but-serious-as-hell indie rock, but the sense of urgency that existed on previous albums is sorely missing. It’s not all bad though. The track ‘Don’t Swallow The Cap’ comes close to recapturing that sense of underlying urgency, as does the impassioned ‘Sea of Love’. If you’re looking for an introduction to The National, avoid this one and go out and buy ‘Alligator’ instead.

hile subsequent instalments in this franchise tended to become a bit of a parody of its forefather, the original ‘Die Hard’ still stands as a paragon of what action blockbusters are all about. Directed by John McTiernan, (‘Predator’, ‘The Hunt For Red October’) this film introduces us to possibly the greatest celluloid action hero since Clint Eastwood’s Harry Callaghan – John McLane. McLane, a cynical and hard bitten NYPD cop, arrives in Los Angeles to spend Christmas with his wife (who has taken a job in LA) and children. However, it’s not going to be a very holly golly Christmas for McLane after a group of terrorists, led by the menacing European Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman in a role more snakey than Snape) storm McLane’s wife’s workplace and take everyone hostage – everyone, that is, except John McLane. With no way in or out, it’s up to McLane to use his quick wits and even quicker one liners to put an end to the terrorist scourge.

One man wolfpack journalist was asking ‘Is Wolfmother a band or a solo project?’ and I found myself answering ‘Yes, it is a solo project called Wolfmother’,” he said. For Stockdale, the name change is much more than a face value deal as he felt that he needed to be a lot more honest with his songwriting this time around. “I remember listening back to a lot of the songs on ‘Cosmic Egg’ and

thinking, ‘just say something, say something’ and that’s what I’ve really tried to do with this record – just be as honest as I can. “I’m also much less involved in all of the carrying on and hoo hah that surrounded Wolfmother. Also, in terms of writing, I’ve definitely gotten more confident, both as a writer and singer – the things I struggled with on Cosmic

fter setting the world on fire with the Aussie hard rock behemoth, Wolfmother, Andrew Stockdale has ditched the moniker behind such hard-hitting tracks as ‘Joker and the Thief’, ‘Woman’, ‘Mind’s Eye’ and ‘White Feather’ in favour of stepping out under his own name with one hell of a foot-stomping rock and roll record – ‘Keep Moving’. The album features that trademark Stockdale rock sensibility, but this time around it is tempered with a heavy psychedelia and flourishes of boogie rock that recalls 70s Aussie psych blues legends Buffalo than any Led Zeppelin comparisons Wolfmother may’ve generated. While the final Wolfmother lineup of Ian Peres, Elliott Hammond, Vin Steele and Hamish Rosser all appear on the album (with a few more guests thrown in for good measure) Stockdale insists it is not a Wolfmother record. He added that seeds of the decision to step out on his own were sewn when the original line-up (Miles Heskett and Chris Ross) split in 2008. “I thought, when the original Wolfmother members left, that I felt a bit weird about still putting stuff out as Wolfmother,” he told TE during a break from rehearsal in his Byron Bay studio. “Now, three years on, it still feels weird for me – I mean, it could still be alright doing that if you’re just gonna tour off the back of those hits, but that’s not what I wanted to do. I found that doing it this way, it really frees up the creativity in the back of your mind.” Stockdale went further, saying that he believed Wolfmother had always been, in some way, a solo project; so stepping out on his own was always going to be a natural progression. “I remember we did a tour of Europe, the last time we were over there, and nearly every interview we did, the

fter hitting their straps individually in bands such as Cog, Mammal and PreShrunk, members of the latest Aussie supergroup, The Nerve, are set to rip your head off when they bring their latest brand of sonic battery to Newcastle. Featuring the vocal talents Ezikiel Ox (Mammal), the punk/funk bass of Davarj Thomas (Pre-Shrunk), the uncompromising rhythm of Lucius Borich (Cog, Juice) and the all round guitar virtuoso stylings of Glenn Proudfoot (guitar wizard, Prazsky Vyber) The Nerve are relatively new to the scene, playing their first show at Melbourne’s iconic Esplanade Hotel just a few weeks ago. Vocalist Ezikiel Ox told TE that the idea behind the band came from guitarist Proudfoot, who had wanted to work with Ox, in some capacity, for some time. “Basically, I’ve known Glen for quite a while and we had always planned to work together, but it just didn’t happen,” he said. “To his credit he really kept at the idea and he had a really clear vision of what he wanted the project to sound like. “It was kind of funny because the whole thing was done via Skype conversations and email. It wasn’t until three days before that first Espy show that we even met and to be honest, I was actually quite cynical about the whole thing, but it went off much better than I expected – we’re smashing it, in fact.” Anyone that has heard The Nerve’s killer debut single ‘Witness’ will attest to how much these guys are actually smashing it. The track kicks along at a breakneck speed with some blistering riffing from Proudfoot, however, Ox said the band wanted to stand on their own terms rather than relying on any past glories, however substantial they may be. “The point with The Nerve is that reputation counts for absolutely f**k all,” he said. “I mean we all have had some pretty considerable success, but that just doesn’t matter anymore – we are all about proving ourselves as The Nerve. “For me, it’s such a special project – we’ve got such amazing players and while I always look forward to getting out on the road, I really can’t wait to get The Nerve out there.” Catch The Nerve when they play at The Great Northern Hotel on Saturday, June 8.

ith an impressive standup career that shows no signs of slowing down and memorable performances on the small screen (‘Jimeoin’, ‘Thank God You’re Here’, ‘The Librarians’, ‘Stupid Stupid Man’), the silver screen (‘Bad Eggs’, ‘The Craic’, ‘Beneath Hill 60’) and on the printed page with his collection of short stories ‘Under Stones’, there’s no denying that London-born, Welsh-raised Bob Franklin has earned a place as one of Australia’s favourite funnymen. The laconic jokester will be in town next month as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow although he told TE that potential punters should not get their hopes up too high about the quality of his performance. “I’d say that people can expect an evening of mild disappointment,” he said. “I think it’s good not to raise people’s expectations too high so you’re not let down.” Franklin, who first came to national attention on Irish-Australian comedian Jimeoin’s TV show – particularly for his hilarious ‘Cooking With Bob’ segments (which he also developed into a show with the Adelaide Fringe, Melbourne Comedy Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe) – said he was unsure if he would be donning the chef’s hat in Newcastle as the proliferation of reality cooking shows have made his recipes somewhat daggy. “I really don’t know what I’ll be able to cook, to be honest – all of my recipes are old fashioned now, like the peach cobbler. Great dessert, but really uncool.” When asked what had been tickling his funnybone of late, Franklin said he

didn’t have to look too far away from home for laughs. “I’m still a really big fan of stuff like ‘The Simpsons’ and ‘Seinfeld’ but then we have plenty of really quality Australian comedies like ‘A Moody Christmas’ and [diminutive comedian Josh Thomas’] ‘Please Like Me’. That show was just so well crafted and genuine – kind of like the stuff you’re used to seeing on the BBC or HBO. It’s really encouraging to see that Australia can still produce such quality comedy.” Franklin said it was the rogue spirit and light subversiveness of his comedic heroes that originally spurred him to get onstage, but he added that, sadly, some of that subversiveness has been lost in modern comedy. “I was always a big fan of guys like Morecombe and Wise, Tommy Cooper, Will Hayes and Laurel and Hardy – these guys were very subversive and very anti-authority. I suppose, to a degree, there are a lot of comics out there now who think of it as a career and they tend to play a certain game, which is counter to what comedy is about in the first place – the subversiveness. It’s hard to be subversive on a major network when it is being run by t**ts.” Franklin a 20-year stand-up veteran, added that it was seeing the wealth of talent and what was being produced in Australia that had kept him so passionate about performing. “You see things like ‘Please Like Me’ and that really gets you excited about it. ince forming in 2006, Byron Bay blues-rock juggernaut Chase The Sun have pushed themselves pretty hard, wasting no time in garnering widespread acclaim for their soulful writing and powerhouse live delivery of fretmaster Jan Rynsaardt. While they may wear their influences well and truly on their sleeve – think the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughn, Appalachian finger picking, and a bit of Hendrix pomp and circumstance – Chase The Sun are no mere revisionists. After gaining quite the reputation among the Aussie blues scene in his first band, Freeway, Rynsaardt joined forces with Ryan Van Gennip (who has held down bass duties for Diana Anaid, Charlton Hill, Sandrine and iota) and Jon “Howler” Howell (Leonardo’s Bride) to form Chase The Sun. The trio met after an acoustic jam session in Sydney’s west and the chemistry was undeniable. Clicking into action immediately, the band were in a

Blue Mountains studio to record their self-titled debut within days of meeting. The album exudes an unapologetic roots core of Rynsaardt’s writing and delivery, acoustic and dobro guitars and brushes that stand in for the walls of Marshalls of his previous rock tour-deforce. After gaining a formidable reputation, thanks largely to an unrelenting touring schedule, Chase the Sun released their second album ‘Rednecks and Gentlemen’ in 2010 and while carrying on in the same blues-rock vein as the first, bristles with a maturity and confidence of a band that is really hitting their straps. fter dabbling with a number of world music and folk collaborations over the years, Australian/Canadian singer-songwriter Kimberley Dawn Lysons has gone full band mode with her latest outfit – the idiosyncratic and ethereal Dawn. The band are about to hit the road for their debut headline tour in support of their debut album ‘The Spinning Jenny’, an eclectic set of beautifully lilting folk with lashings of light and shade that provides the perfect backdrop for Lysons’ powerful delivery, along with her signature looping vocal arrangements. “We’re all extremely excited about getting out on the road,” Lysons told TE.

“It feels like I have been sitting at a computer screen for years in preparation for the tour, so it will be good to get outside – we’re all bursting at the seams.” The beguiling “neo-Victorian” seven-piece managed to secure the services of Tea Party frontman Jeff Martin to produce ‘The Spinning Jenny’ and Lysons said he brought a mature musicality to proceedings that helped her realise her mission. “The way the collaboration with Jeff came about was that we supported him on his solo tour in North Queensland and he was into what we were doing and offered to produce the record,” she said. “For years and years I had various ideas about how I wanted things to sound, but I just couldn’t create them myself. Jeff is just such an amazing musician and we were on the

same wavelength from the beginning. “The majority of the songs had been written prior to working with Jeff – I had quite a large list of songs that had been written over the years and he really helped me cull it down to the songs that would really work on the album.” Born in Australia to Canadian parents, Lysons is descended, on her father’s side, from an Indian Princess and an English officer. Each generation of her family has travelled to a different country or continent so it’s no surprise that her musical influences are many and varied and that her family’s nomadic history was an ever-present influence when writing the album. “My family history was a huge influence on the record, both in the sounds and the lyric content,” she said. “Quite a lot of thought went into the sounds and textures on the album so they would reflect that.” In a live setting, Lysons said that the band was all about connecting with their audience. “I just love connecting with an audience on a personal level,” she said. “Having someone come up to you after a show and give you a hug or just tell you how much a particular song means to them is just awesome. fter a stints in 90s Sydney outfits Presto and Seasaw, and a solo career that saw him perform alongside the likes of the Coors, Jason Mraz, Ben Folds and Hunters and Collectors, Luke Pittman decided to pack everything in with a view that he would resume his music career if and when it felt right. Thankfully, that time was the beginning of this year when he formed latest outfit Glowing Embers – a starkly simplistic yet completely engrossing alt country-esque four-piece (sans drums and bass), with Pittman’s 17-year-old daughter Claira on backing vocals. Pittman said that having that family connection in the band was an indescribable feeling. “Vocally, our voices just work so well together – I kind of got sick and tired of trying to find a great singer, so I decided

that I’d make one,” he laughed. Given that the band has only been playing since the start of the year, it seems the timing of Pittman’s return couldn’t be better. Since then, the band have played only a handful of shows – their first few as a four-piece, supporting Tex Perkins and Charlie Owen. Pittman, no stranger to the rigors of being in an up-and-coming band, said it was something that, thankfully, his daughter had yet to experience. “Yeah she’s had a pretty good run as far as that goes,” he said. “I can remember some of my first gigs playing in band comps at the old Lewisham Hotel on Parramatta Road in Sydney – it was bloody awful. “The whole thing with this band is – I’ve done the hard yards before so it’s all about fishing around for really good gigs – and really Lizotte’s is one of the best gigs in Newcastle.” Catch Glowing Embers supporting Amy Vee at Lizotte’s Lambton on Thursday, June 6.

Big scores dominate round

ome big score lines dominated the Round 7 results for the Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League. Cessnock, Maitland, Macquarie and Western Suburbs all had big wins to show for their efforts, in fine displays by all. This week sees the most traditional of local derbies up at Kurri on Saturday at 3pm. George Ndeira and his boys will be smarting from their big loss to Macquarie, whilst Todd Edwards’ Goannas seem to be setting themselves up for a big second half of the season. Direct from the ‘Leigh Maughan bunker’ up at Kurri, this will be a beauty and will be the live streamed ‘Match of the Round’ this Saturday with commentary from Tim Butler and Darren Forward, who continue to improve every week. On Sunday, all at 3pm, Lakes United will look to post their first win under Rip Taylor when they take on Spider Walsh’s Port Stephens side, who are fresh from the bye. This should be a great clash as the players rip in for these two great mates to see who gets first bragging rights. Should be a close one. At Townson Oval, South Newcastle

will be hoping to get some troops back on deck when they take on the unbeaten Macquarie Scorpions. Noel Dent’s boys continue to do everything asked of them, and Adam Betteridge will be hoping his boys can lift for this one. Finally, at St John Oval Paul Davis and his Central Newcastle side will be looking to bounce back from two disappointing losses when they take on the improving Maitland Pickers, who have now posted three wins in a row in what must be a huge boost for PJ Ellis. he NYC Newcastle Knights posted their first ever victory at Mount Smart Stadium on Sunday, with an impressive 24-10 win against the fifth-placed New Zealand Warriors. The Knights started their Round 11 match strongly, with an early try to winger Lachlan Shipard, who received a beautiful cut-out pass from Honeti Tuha to score in the corner. This opening try came on the back of some scrambling defence, which saw the young Knights force the Warriors in to touch. Oakes conversion fell away but the Knights led early 4-0. Jack Mamo was the second to score with the help of Tuha, who threw another cut-out pass, this time to his right winger and the Knights led 10-0.
