eith Reid, a resident of the Domain Macquarie Place nursing home in Cameron Park, chose a very unusual way to celebrate his 90th birthday. Cheered on by family, friends, staff and residents from the nursing home, he completed a record-breaking tandem skydive over Maitland. The World War Two veteran became Australia’s oldest skydiver with a dive from 14,000 feet which included a minute’s freefall before he parachuted to the ground. Not only had he never previously tried skydiving, but he hadn’t even set foot inside an aeroplane! “When I told my son I wanted to skydive for my 90th he thought I was crazy,” said Keith. “But I knew that this would be the perfect way to celebrate such a momentous birthday.”

Why do we need political parties involved at a local government level?

L

et me make it clear that this is not a criticism of the councillors in our area – Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Cessnock. The people elected in these local government areas are all decent, honest people. They make themselves readily available and reporters at this newspaper have no trouble gaining access to them when seeking comment on various issues. But in every electorate at every council meeting we see the major political parties banding together when voting on issues. Their views seemingly shaped by what their colleagues up the line at state and federal have deemed as policy. Of course there is a need for political parties at state and national level, where a successful government needs a unified team working with consistency across the whole area they cover. I realise that you would still have disagreements and differing points of view if every councillor was an independent and no doubt unofficial alliances would be formed, but you

would at least have greater confidence that decisions and opinions were being formed here in the Hunter rather than in Sydney or Canberra. ***************************** Let’s concentrate on the positives for the Jets. hopefully starting with the local derby against the Mariners at Hunter Stadium on Saturday night. Jets coach Gary van Egmond has come under plenty of fire after the winless start to the season, but surely he deserves more than three games before being judged. Relegating Michael Bridges and Zenon Caravella from the starting line-up shows he is prepared to think outside the box in the search for results.

Getting back on our feet State and Federal Governments offer raft of bushfire assistance Paul Monforte

A

s the clean-up from the recent bushfires continues, affected residents are reminded of the availability of federal government financial assistance. The Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment (AGDRP) is available to assist people who have been adversely affected by the bushfires in New South Wales that began on October 9. The Disaster Recovery Allowance (DRA) provides assistance for employees, small business persons and farmers who experience a loss of income as a direct result of the NSW Bushfires October 2013. Eligible Port Stephens residents have until April 18, 2014 to make their claim, while those Lake Macquarie have until April 21, 2014. Further information is available from the Department of Human Services on 180 22 66 or at www.humanservices.gov.au Meanwhile, NSW premier Barry O’Farrell said the state government will offer practical assistance to residents and businesses affected by the bushfire crisis by refunding registration charges for destroyed vehicles and waving fees to replace drivers licences and other lost documents. “People who have lost their homes and vehicles in this bush fire crisis have enough on their minds without having to worry about vehicle registration charges and the cost of replacing essential government

documents,” Mr O’Farrell said. “To help families and businesses, the owner of a vehicle will receive a pro-rata refund on registration fees if the vehicle was destroyed in the bush fires,” he said. “The NSW Government will also replace a driver licence or vehicle registration papers free-of-charge if they were destroyed in the fires. “There will also be no charge for people

who need to replace birth, marriage and change-of-name certificates. “At times like this, it is crucial the NSW Government assists people wherever we can – and that’s exactly what we’re doing. “This step comes after we waived the waste levy for people taking bush fire waste to the tip. “We also announced that Sydney Water and Hunter Water customers would not be

charged for the extra water used to defend their homes during the bush fire crisis. “People seeking help with the bush fires can also call the new Service NSW 24/7 telephone service on 13 77 88. “Customers are generally answered within 30 seconds and they will be provided the information they need or directly referred to an agency that can help them further.”

Hi, I’m Adrian Corbould, Senior Lawyer at Turnbull Hill Lawyers, and I specialise in Disputed Wills. My many years of experience show that many Wills are not legally binding and can be successfully challenged if they are unfair or have left people out unreasonably… and I have become an expert in helping people get what they’re fairly entitled to. Spouses, children and defacto partners of the deceased may be eligible to claim… and so may others in certain circumstances. You have a limited time from the date of death to lodge a claim so it’s always best to act quickly to get professional guidance on what your entitlements are. People will be delighted to know that often the legal fees of challenging a Will are paid out of the estate of the person who has passed away ... there are some simple conditions which I can explain. There have been many changes in the law over recent years leaving many questions to be answered... On Wednesday, 6 November from 6pm to 7.30pm I will be presenting a free information 4904 8000 or register at turnbullhill.com.au

The time has come to get my legs into action

T

ake a minute to hoist up your skirts or drop your daks and have a long hard look at your legs. If you’ve got two of them, what do you do with them? Obviously transport they afford us the cheapest option going. They allow you to drive, dance, play sport and, right now given how hot it’s been, they are at their absolute best dangling in the water off a pier or in a pool forcing our body temperatures down. Legs have enjoyed being one of the most sung about body parts as well. Off the top of my head I can easily name dedications from some of the biggest names in rock royalty; Queen, ZZ Top, Rod Stewart, Van Halen, ACDC and John Mellencamp have all, at some point in their careers been sitting there, maybe even cross-legged, going ‘what the heck can I write about now?” and then BAM .. another song about legs was birthed. (Bonus points if you can name each artists’ leg song) Legs are a star body part but there are two different camps our legs fall into. There’s legs who like to run and there’s the other mob. My mob! The ‘legs are for preventing my bottom dragging on the ground’ brigade. Sadly though, my mob of non-runners is being overtaken at lightening pace by this new breed of people - the fun runners. Men, women and kids of all ages are lacing themselves into fluoro footwear and sweating themselves silly.

without something on offer for our fastfooted friends. There’s Hill to Harbour, Wollombi Wild Ride, Port Stephens Summer Runs. In fact, add in Park Run the free, 5k weekly timed runs operating all over and we are an exhausted bunch. Granted there are worse things people could be doing with their time like sitting sedentary, stuffing themselves stupid with coffee and cake but enough about me, I want you runners to know just how harmful to your health running can be. Why, just last year when I signed on for the weekly Newcastle Cross Country events at Blackbutt, I ran straight through a bull ant nest and ended up with ants where no creature had ever ventured; neither man nor doctor!! That said, truth be told, quite simply I am jealous. I want to want to run because the title suggests it’s fun. So here’s my pledge. Instead of playing dress-ups in running clobber I might actually get them a little sweat soaked. Who knows? I might even enjoy it or at least have to be resuscitated by someone cute who does. Cheers Tanya

Just last week 1000 odd people, and I do mean odd because it was a scorching day, competed in the Fernleigh 15. The brainchild of star runner Scott Westcott, the Fernleigh 15 is now well and truly

on the calendar each year so there’s no running, or as I prefer - walking swiftly, away from it. Which brings me to my next point; events is plural. Barely a weekend goes by

Laman Street with the figs in place in 2011

At the official opening on Friday

Laman Street back in action Controversial $2.2m redevelopment opens with 12 new fig trees

he new look Laman Street officially opened to the public on Friday afternoon more than a year and a half after arborists controversially removed 14 Hills figs that had stood in the Civic street since the 1930s. The $2.2 million project included the relocation of utilities, reconstruction of the

roadway and the creation of a shared plaza, which Council says will be used to host markets and other cultural events. Newcastle City Council general manager, Ken Gouldthorp, said the design of the project was specifically tailored to provide room for newly-planted fig trees to flourish. “The state of the art design and construction has been completed to accommodate very large trees in the public domain including water sensitive urban

design components including porous paving that will direct storm water into the area around tree roots,” Mr Gouldthorp said in a statement. “When fully grown, the 12 new Hills figs will provide similar canopy as removed trees with design life of 70 to 100 years.” Mr Gouldthorp said the shared plaza would also provide better access to Newcastle Art Gallery and Newcastle Region Library.

Caity Raschke, from local protest group Save Our Figs, said Newcastle City Council had destroyed a beautiful streetscape with “an expanse of concrete.” “In my opinion the whole thing has been about relocating water mains and electricity, it was never about the community,” Dr Raschke said. “It’s a waste of money and it will be 40 years before it looks any good.”

Blacksmiths Public School: Sustainability honoured

Bushfires: You can help

F

irst National Real Estate Lake Macquarie, through the First National Foundation, has called for all Australians to donate to assist people who have been directly affected by the New South Wales bushfires. “This week we expected to be assisting Australian Red Cross to raise awareness of the importance of preparation through Disaster Preparedness Week. We did not expect to be responding to the immediate needs created by the New South Wales’ bushfire crisis” First

National Lake Macquarie principal, Troy Duncan said. “People across New South Wales are suffering untold losses including their homes, pets, livestock, sentimental and personal effects, and in some cases, their livelihoods as well”. First National Real Estate will provide updates via its Facebook page facebook.com/firstnationalrealestate about ways in which people can make cash donations, or donate items such as blankets, clothing, packaged food or anything to assist bushfire victims.

lacksmiths Public School has added another notch to its environmental sustainability belt, picking up the 2013 Lake Macquarie School Environment Award in the primary school category at an awards ceremony held last week. The school, which claimed the national WWF Earth Hour Education Award earlier this year, is bin-less with extensive recycling systems, worm farms, compost systems, herbs and vegetable gardens, water tanks, solar panels and a native garden to encourage biodiversity. Students also take part in sustainable

living lessons as part of the curriculum. St Mary’s High School at Gateshead took out top honours in the high school category for its ongoing efforts in rehabilitating the school grounds, nearby Kennedy Creek and Redhead dunes. Lake Macquarie City Council sustainability manager, Alice Howe, said she was impressed with the high standard and number of entries received. Other winners included Lakeside School (natural environment category), Valentine Public School (energy category), Garden Suburb Public School (water category), Awaba Public School (innovation category), Nords Wharf Public School and Kahibah Public School (most improved) and Edgeworth Heights Public School and Blackalls Park Public School (encouragement award).

Former Loft coordinator criticises Council over closure

T

Amelia Parrott

T

he former head of Newcastle City Council’s own youth venue, the Loft, has hit out at Council, delivering a scathing review of its management style at a community meeting held at Town Hall last week. Speaking to a packed room of more than 200 ratepayers frustrated over recent cuts to services across the city, former Loft coordinator, Barney Langford, slammed Council’s handling of the closure of the popular youth space last month. “The decision by the executive leadership team to include the Loft in identified services to cease was made without any consultation with staff, with users of the services, with the parents of the users, or with the Loft’s community partners,” Mr Langford claimed. “There was no cost-benefit analysis undertaken to determine the quadruple bottom line value of the service. “There was no attempt to consult with staff to determine any alternative mode of operation to address financial concerns.” He also criticised Council on reneging on its commitment to provide a centralised facility for local youth, as outlined in its Commitment to the Young People of Newcastle policy, adopted in April 1997. “Fellow citizens, the barbarians are inside the gates,” he said. A resolution was passed during the

Newcastle City Council’s youth venue, The Loft

meeting that condemned Council’s decision to reduce the operating hours of the Beresfield Swimming Centre, reduce the coverage of Council’s professional lifeguard service, close the Loft, and axe the art gallery director position. Community members also resolved to advise NSW Premier, Barry O’Farrell of

their “profound concern” over Council’s use of confidential sessions to prevent public discussion on budget cutbacks. Barney Langford abstained from voting on the resolution. The Post approached Newcastle City Council for comment on this story but they did not respond before deadline.

he State Government came one step closer to deciding the location of Newcastle’s future light rail last week with a select tender being released for companies to provide a business case and economic appraisal for the project. Minister for Transport, Gladys Berejiklian, said evidence gathered through the tender would help inform key decisions at each of the three key stages, the first of which involves assessing where the light rail will operate. $10 million was set aside in the last State budget to explore the potential of linking the CBD to surrounding suburbs and beaches via the light rail and Broadmeadow, Hamilton and Wickham are currently being explored as possible starting points for the service. The State Government has previously expressed intentions to utilise the existing heavy corridor, however, Newcastle Lord Mayor, Jeff McCloy, has indicated he would like to see the line run up Hunter Street. The second stage of the project will see a more detailed assessment of the preferred options and their benefits and costs. The final stage will involve a full business case assessment of the preferred project. The announcement follows the appointment of GHD last month to undertake scoping studies, and the release of two open tenders for engineering, urban design and environmental advice. The select tender will be awarded later this year.

s the temperature soared past 36 degrees last week and Hunter residents sweltered while bushfires raged across the region, Beresfield Swimming Centre remained closed. One of many local services on the chopping block as part of Newcastle City Council’s penny-pinching 2013/2014 budget, the pool finally opened for the summer season on Monday, a full five weeks after the season began at the Mayfield, Stockton and Wallsend Swimming Centres and more than two months after Lambton pool. Beresfield Swimming Club president, Greg Skinner, told the Post that despite Newcastle City Council agreeing to

open the pool for the swimming club on Friday evenings throughout October, the shortened season has had an enormous impact on the club. “It’s a little early to tell what the impact will be on our season but in terms of overall club numbers we are about half of what we were last year,” he said. “[Opening on Friday’s] has been good to allow our competition to go ahead but we haven’t been able to train. We’re still accepting registrations so hopefully it picks up.” Mr Skinner said the Council needed to engage with the community to find a solution that saved money and but also ensured that residents had access to the pool throughout warmer months. “I think there would be a lot of anger from residents in the first instance but there are a number of solutions that would satisfy both parties.”

ork along our coastline is coming along at a great pace, just in time for summer. Getting to the beach will now be much safer and easier for cyclists, pedestrians and drivers with works at Scenic Drive now finished. Taking just under two years to complete, the works represent $2 million of muchneeded improvements. Almost 1km of shared pathway along with a dedicated cycleway has been installed so there is enough room for pedestrians and cyclists to make their way to the beach, but also to ensure traffic still flows easily including public buses. There was also lot of work to be done in stabilising the cliff face and rock cutting adjoining the footpath. Council received numerous requests to provide kerb and gutter and footpath between Merewether foreshore and

he recent bushfire events over the past few weeks have affected residents in a number of areas across our City. Last week, I personally visited the affected areas, including Catherine Hill Bay and the emergency evacuation centres at Swansea and Charlestown, and I must say that seeing the affected sites, highlighted just how close the fires had come to many homes and showed me how unpredictable fires can be and the tireless work of fire fighters to protect our communities. Looking out over the burnt bushland, it was incredible to see seed pods that had opened from the heat of the fire, showing beautiful orange and soft white layers of new life and that nature is also starting to rebuild. The community spirit I witnessed was inspiring and demonstrated the resilience

I commend the tireless and courageous efforts of the fire fighters, police, service providers and hundreds of volunteers, who all worked so valiantly to protect our families, homes and community. During the recovery process, it’s important that we continue to demonstrate that community spirit and look out for each other, particularly those who live or have friends and family in the fire-affected areas of our City. I would like to thank you for your patience while we build the viewing area near the Merewether surf club. Still Wiggling: New faces coming to town in December

*Conditions apply

The Wiggles will return to Newcastle in December

Amelia Parrott

T

his year may have seen the greatest change in their unrivalled 20-year run at the top of the children’s entertainment tree in Australia, but the Wiggles show no sign of slowing down. Having just returned from an eight week stint in North America, which saw the foursome play to sold out crowds, the group are getting ready to get back on the road throughout December. New Wiggle, Simon Pryce, told the Post how he was settling into life in the red skivvy and how fans were getting used to seeing new faces on stage. “It’s been really positive actually, the kids have been really good about it.

“The children are quite happy – they actually see the change as something fun to do, learning new names and new characters and things so they have kind of embraced it. “A lot of girls come dressed up as Emma with bows in their hair and little yellow shirts and black dresses and bows on their shoes, it’s really lovely,” he said. Anthony, Emma, Lachlan and Simon will visit Newcastle this December, bringing their ‘Ready, Steady, Wiggle’ tour to Newcastle Entertainment Centre on Thursday, December 19. Mr Pryce said the show will feature festive favourites like, ‘Go Santa Go’ and ‘Here Come the Reindeer’, just in time for Christmas, as well as Wiggles classics like ‘Fruit Salad’, ‘Hot Potato’ and ‘Rocka-bye Your Bear.’ Tickets are available via Ticketek.

End of school just the beginning

A

new era is entered when the pen is put down at the end of the last Higher School Certificate exam. Ahead are the choices for the future; find a job – or a career – tertiary studies or a gap year? Or perhaps the direction is known and now it’s time to embark on the chosen course. If a job is first option, a place to start is with the Positions Vacant column in this newspaper. There, a selection of jobs from the JobsInTheHunter.com.au website is shown and the web site itself has hundreds more. Employment is a fluid market, so it’s a good idea to regularly check the page and the site – you never know when the job just for you is going to be there. Whether it’s a job to make some pocket money until the start of tertiary studies or an apprenticeship, or if it’s a career in commerce or industry in the Hunter Region, there is the widest jobs market on the website through which to research and select. To research other options for the working future, the website www. myfuture.edu.au has guidance to further

study and apprenticeships, and ways to start a career in the workplace. There are links to other sites where advice can be found on what are the hot jobs for the future, statistical data on the workforce and the increasingly popular path to a career, learn-while-you-earn options. There is a download in various languages for parents who want to help guide career choices for their HSC graduate. Important to bear in mind is that fact that, these days, the career you first embark on is unlikely to be the one you retire from. It’s common these days to change jobs and even to change careers as the working landscape changes and new work and training opportunities emerge. Remember also that new types of jobs are being created through technology and the changing demands of consumers. Increasingly, we are moving from a manufacturing-based economy and workforce to one that is service based, although technical skills are certain to have a sound future.

Doing it for Josh: School’s walk honours former student

hen 13-year-old, Josh Caruso passed away unexpectedly on his way to school one Tuesday morning in August, his sudden death sent shockwaves through the Hunter region. Five-eighth with the Valentine-Eleebana rugby league club and a representative player with Wallsend Touch, no one would have expected that the St Mary’s High School student’s life would be cut short by undiagnosed congenital heart disease. An ex-student of St Francis Xavier’s Primary School at Belmont, the teen’s death had a huge impact on his former school. “Josh had been with us for seven years – he had been part of our school, part of

our community and was only gone for a very short time before his death so it had a powerful impact on the children, staff and families,” St Francis Xavier’s Primary School principal, Louise Outram said. “We were moved by that tragedy and not having been touched by any children with heart disease before, the children and parents felt very strongly that they wanted to do something tangible.” On Friday, students, teachers and parents donned red clothing and walked the Fernleigh Track to raise money for Heart Kids, an organisation improving the lives of sufferers of childhood heart disease and raising money for research. “We thought if we could do a fundraiser for Heart Kids in Josh’s memory that would be a really powerful thing, not just to raise money but as an educational tool.” Miss Outram said the school hoped to raise around $2000.

Put the joggers away for your own good

ven if you aren’t close enough to fires to be in immediate danger from the flames, everyone should still be aware of the dangers from the smoke. As I was driving through the smoke recently I saw a man running along the side of the road. Far from looking like he was running for his life in some emergency, he was all dressed up in jogging gear with his water bottle belt and headband on. I’m all for exercise but there is a time and a place. Each breath full of smoke you suck into your lungs is bringing in a lot of junk your body doesn’t want. To go out into it and purposefully increase your breathing rate is just silly. Doctors are urging people to stay indoors as much as possible and avoid exercising outside as heavy smoke rises above bushfire-hit NSW. More than 200 homes have been lost in fires west of Sydney. NSW Health says many areas in the state are experiencing poor to very poor air quality, even hundreds of kilometres away from the fires. The Australian Medical Association’s NSW president, Brian Owler, says heavy exercise should be avoided. “The last thing you want to do is to go out for a jog when you’re breathing in such heavy pollution,” he said. Professor Wayne Smith from NSW Health urged asthma sufferers to follow their asthma action plan. Asthmatics should also ensure they have their puffers with them at all times.

The D words – diabetes, depression and vitamin D

The humble white shirt is your must-have

A

woman’s spring/summer wardrobe should not be complete without a tailored button-up white shirt; the staple item for the season. To work: Building your daily office outfit around a white shirt is simple and there are hundreds of ways you can do it. If you choose to wear a pencil skirt, wear your tailored shirt over the top, without tucking it in and fasten a belt around your waist. This will accentuate your figure and gives an edge to the classic ‘office uniform’. Wear simple jewellery, a watch, a stand out pair of heels and pull your hair into a low bun. To the shops: I love to wear a white shirt to the shops, especially when trying on clothes because it is easy to take on and off and will go with anything you wish to try on. Wear with your favourite jeans or denim shorts for a casual look and use minimal makeup and accessories. To the movies: How you wear your shirt to the movies depends on who you are going with but for me, the movies is generally a casual experience. I would wear my shirt tucked in to a pair of jeans, with a belt or tucked in to a pretty skirt. If I wanted to dress up my outfit I would add a long necklace. To dinner: Whether you wear your shirt with a skirt or pants, the important things to remember for a dinner date are the accessories. Heels, a clutch and classy accessories – I would wear my hair up with statement earrings and some silver or gold cuffs on my wrists. To the beach: Wear your white shirt unbuttoned and thrown over a pair of swimmers or a maxi dress; this way it is easy to pull off so that you can play in the waves.

F

or people with diabetes, having one chronic medical condition is usually quite enough of a challenge. When they’re told they are also more likely to develop another potentially serious disease, maintaining a reasonably bright outlook on life could become even more of a struggle. People with diabetes are three to four times more likely to develop cardiovascular (heart and blood vessel) disease – including heart attack and stroke. It seems if you have diabetes the fats (cholesterol and triglycerides) in your blood behave a bit differently. The “bad cholesterol” is really bad; it’s thicker and more likely to block the blood vessels. So good diabetes management means effectively managing cholesterol levels and blood pressure, as well. Now, to add further insult to injury, we learn that people with diabetes have an increased risk of depression. Depression is pretty common in the community anyway. Statistics vary, but it’s generally accepted that approximately one in five people will experience depression at some time in their adult life; and research shows that having diabetes could double the risk. How depressing is that? Of course, having clinical depression is not the same as feeling sad just now and again. We all get like that from time to time. If you feel miserable all or most of the time, if you’ve lost interest and enjoyment in life, if you have problems sleeping or if you’re always feeling tired, you definitely need to check with your doctor because depression can be treated.

ver the course of the last week my Engineers Without Borders Dialogues on Development study tour has taken me from the dry banks of the Nebine Creek at Murra Murra Station in South East QLD, through the townships of Bourke, Brewarrina and Broken Hill in NSW through to Mildura VIC and Murray Bridge in SA. Along the way we have met with traditional owners, environmental and industry experts and government officials. Writing this column I’m sitting overlooking the stunning vistas of the Coorong, the series of fresh and saltwater lagoons that form the Murray’s delta with the Southern Ocean. During the last two weeks I have learnt a great deal about the significance of culture and of the incredible diversity and resilience of Aboriginal Australia. Conversations with Elders have also revealed detail on social and environmental issues facing their communities, ranging from imminent environmental destruction to dealing with issues related to high rates of unemployment. Overwhelmingly however the key lesson I have learned is the value of quality consultation. Whilst consultation seems to be the buzz word of the moment thrown freely around by both the government and private sectors, quality consultation is much rarer. In order for consultation to be effective, meaningful relationships between communities need to be formed and knowledge shared. The Dialogues tour I’ve engaged in focuses directly on this, the two-way sharing of information. Projects that do this effectively are much more effective, more trusted by the community and ultimately more successful.

Happy Halloween

alloween is a perfect example of how an ancient celebration can be used by schools and families to increase learning and have fun at the same time. Halloween is not a traditional American festival but has its origins in northern Europe going back 1000’s of years. It is similar to the ancient ‘Day of the Dead’ festival in Mexico and multiple other celebrations from around the world. It was the original Pagan Celtic New Year, Samhain although like Christmas and Easter, it was adopted by the Christian church.. People dress up (guising), have games and eat particular foods. All of these can be part of learning with Drama, PDHPE, Food Science as well as religion and ethics. Guising is part of All Saints Day, though evidence suggests that it was practiced by thousands of years ago in Scotland. Early Christians wore masks (guises) to allow themselves to be unrecognised by the spirits of the dead. By dressing up and using drama, children can explore their fears in a fun and relaxed way. Telling ghost stories and playing games makes monsters and death things that aren’t scary anymore. Souling forms the basis for ‘Trick or Treating’. The poor would go to houses asking for soul-cakes, a biscuit food. The wealthy would exchange these foods for prayers for their dead relatives. By safely having fun we can socially interact with our community and think about others. Through enjoying Halloween, and the real history of it, we can learn and have fun. Have a safe, happy Halloween.

New Psych interview

C

ontinuing our conversation with Tarnya Davis of NewPsych: What are 3 things that you did successfully to put your practice on the map? 1. Look after my clients really well 2. Look after my referrers really well 3. Attract really amazing and talented people to work with me Any tips on how to attract and keep key staff members? Be compassionate and respectful. Try to encourage people’s creativity and sense of self-worth and the value in what they do. Show them you value what they do. Luckily we are a practice where we all are passionate about making a positive difference in people’s lives. What initiatives did you take to minimise risk and what assistance was available? I was mindful of not having all my eggs in one basket. Not relying on one source of income, as funding and rebates for psychological services can change quickly with the whim of a government. What tips for success would you suggest to other small business owners, new and existing?

Work hard, don’t give up too easily but also know when to change tack. Be flexible and resilient. Expect and accept mistakes. We all make them, but resilient people and resilient organisations learn from them. How did you successfully identify your market? Feedback from others like my patient accountant Craig Toyne as well as input from the women in a business mentoring course really helped. I came to realise I couldn’t be all things to all people. We decided not to aim to be the biggest, but to try to be the best at what we do. What is the single most successful tool you used to attract your ideal client? A good reputation and communicating a clear message - we all have ups and downs, and what the psychologists at NewPsych offer can really make a difference. What has been the biggest personal challenge for you? Juggling work and family. I had four children in quick succession, including twins and it was difficult to leave work at work and difficult to work when there was so much happening with the kids. I’m still not on top of that one, and have accepted it is what it is.

15,000 people in 15 markets worldwide including 1,000 Australians. There is some help at hand for the many business people that are underprepared for retirement with a free financial planning information evening being held in Newcastle on November 6 and in Lake Macquarie on November 12. The Greater Building Society has arranged the session to be run by expert financial planners from its partner Bridges Financial Planning. My business banking team colleagues report that many small business people in particular are often so busy working on their business they neglect their superannuation and planning for their retirement. You don’t have to be a Greater customer to attend the session. You’ll also have the opportunity to book a complimentary appointment with a Bridges financial planner, normally valued at $330. o you know how much money you would need to live on once you retire? Are you putting enough in to superannuation or is all your money, time and effort going into running your business? A global survey conducted earlier this year by HSBC shows Australians anticipate their savings will run out a little over half way through their retirement with nearly 60 per cent acknowledging they are either inadequately preparing for retirement or not preparing at all. More than half (56%) of Australians have never saved specifically for retirement outside of super. The survey also shows Australians have a preference for short-term saving, and underestimate the cost of living in later life. More than half (53%) prioritise saving for a holiday over retirement. On average they think they’ll need just 66 per cent of their working life income to be comfortable in retirement - the lowest of all countries surveyed. The survey had responses from

G

iven all of the lacklustre reviews that this highly anticipated film received when it hit cinemas, I was expecting this latest outing from the Pirates of the Carribbean pair of director Gore Verbinsky and actor Johnny Depp, to be somewhat of a turkey. How wrong I was. This is a thoroughly engaging western romp with a refreshing seam of subtle comedy running through it, thanks mostly to a brilliant performance from Depp as the ubiquitous Tonto. In the 1930s, an elderly Tonto tells a young boy the tale of John Reid, the Lone Ranger (Armie Hammer). He rides with his brother and fellow Texas Rangers in pursuit of the notorious Butch Cavendish. Ambushed by the outlaw and left for dead, he is rescued by Tonto, before becoming a reluctant masked rider pursuing the criminal against all odds.

I

n this reviewer’s humble opinion, outside of the Kinks’ Ray Davies, Paul Simon is in possession of one of the most nuanced turns of phrase in modern popular music and this retrospective rams that point home, and then some. This collection charts Simon’s long and eclectic career, from his days with Simon and Garfunkel through to his diverse solo recordings where he dabbled in pop-rock while incorporating many world music influences from reggae and gospel to traditional African rhythms. It is the first half of this collection that is the real winner, with the Simon and Garfunkel tracks, ‘The Boxer’, and ‘The Only Living Boy in New York’ being standouts. That’s not to say that the solo section is anything less with such classics as ’50 Ways to Leave Your Lover’’, ‘Mother and Child Reunion’, and ‘You Can Call Me Al’ getting an airing.

f it’s not too far past your bedtime, you’d do well to check out this brilliant crime drama from Brian De Palma , and arguably his best directorial outing since ‘The Untouchables’. Al Pacino gives a bravura performance as Carlito Brigante – a former heroin trafficker and hitman for the Puerto Rican mob who, after being released from jail on a technicality,

ollowing the release of 1998’s ‘In The Aeroplane Over The Sea’ and subsequent support tour, legendary US indie cult band ‘Neutral Milk Hotel’ went on hiatus. Aside from a 2001 live album, a 2002 album of Bulgarian music and a handful of live appearances, Jeff Mangum became indie rock’s resident recluse for over a decade. The band is noted for its experimental sound, obscure lyrics and eclectic instrumentation. For the first time ever, Neutral Milk Hotel will be performing shows in Australia. Joining Neutral Milk Hotel will be the Portland, Oregon troubadour M. Ward. In April this year M.Ward released his highly anticipated sixth studio solo album A Wasteland Companion to receiving critical acclaim world-wide Superchunk has offered up a sonic salve off and on for two decades, at various volumes. Miss this at your peril.

vows to go straight – focussing on his dream of buying into a car rental business in Florida. To that end, he takes a job running a nightclub but soon finds that he is unable to escape his violent past. Sean Penn is also electric as Brigante’s coked-up lawyer David Kleinfeld and Penelope Ann Miller conjures up a fair amount of chemistry with her on-screen love interest, Pacino.

S

ince first bursting onto the scene as the frontwoman for ‘80s funk-poppers I’m Talking in the early 80s, Kate Ceberano has never been one to shy away from a musical challenge. Post I’m Talking, the singer has tackled various genres including pop, jazz and soul as well as various forays into theatre (‘Jesus Christ Superstar’) and film (‘Dust Off The Wings’). Now, almost 30 years since the release of I’m Talking’s first EP, Ceberano’s musical curiosity is still alive and well, as evidenced on her latest long player and first album of new material in more than a decade, ‘Kensal Road’. ‘Kensal Road’ is a refreshingly organic album, that is awash with lush harmonisation and lashings of ukulele, mandolin and guitar that belies her Aussie pop princess tag. Ceberano will be in town this weekend to give Novocastrians an up close and personal taste of ‘Kensal Road’and she said that that the prospect of visiting regional centres was an enticing one. “I haven’t really done a full regional tour in so long – being a parent can make things like that difficult, but I’m just so excited to be getting out there with the new album – it’s going to be a great show.” Ceberano, who recorded the album

in the UK with producer James Bryan (Nelly Furtado, Lisa Marie Presley) said that her latest album could be her most truthful yet and that she was eternally grateful to her label, Sony, for allowing her to spread her creative wings even more. “Yeah we really wanted to capture a very raw and unaffected vibe on the album which I really hope shines through,” she said. “I also really wanted to make the most truthful album that I could I mean, there is great power in truth but if there is no one on the other end to hear it, what’s the point? Which is why I am so greatful to everyone at Sony for supporting me in this – they’ve been wonderful. So, after so many years in the business and with such hits as ‘Bedroom Eyes’, ‘Pash’ and ‘Every Little Thing’ under her belt, what is it about this music lark that keeps Ceberano so passionate? “For me live performance is everything – it’s almost inexplicable. I just couldn;t imagine doing anything else,” she said. “Also I put a lot of it down to good fortune – I mean, I came from what was essentially an avant garde disco band that flew in the face of pretty much everything that was going on at the time and I feel very fortunate that I’m still doing it all these years later.” Catch Kate Ceberano when she plays at Wests, Lambton on Friday, November 1.

t has taken a fair amount of cajoling and more than a decade, but seminal Newcastle hardcore band Found My Direction are back, for two special shows at the Cambridge Hotel this weekend. TE sat down with founding members Drew Charnock (vocals) and Nigel Delfs (guitar) and the pair said the idea for the reunion came about quite organically. “We had been asked for years and there was really no interest at the time,” Charnock said. “Anyway, we had done a ‘Looking Back’ thing for Rest Assured zine that sort of sparked a little bit of interest and people started asking again – the time was right and that was it.” Forming in Maitland in 1997, Found My Direction quickly rose through the ranks of the burgeoning Newcastle hardcore scene to become one of the most revered bands in the Aussie scene, thanks in no small part to a blistering 7”, ‘Before Their Time’ (regarded in some circles as the best Aussie hardcore release ever) and two full lengths, ‘Burn All White Flags’, and ‘The Path Remains’. While Delfs and Charnock said they were both looking forward to hitting the stage again, the humble pair said they were unsure as to any influence the band has exerted on the scene.

Photo: Courtesy of Ryan Wilmott

“I look at FMD now and it’s quite obvious what our influences were so it’s hard to see us as influencing other bands,” Delfs said “If you want to hear the better version of FMD, get ‘Crime Ridden Society’ by One Life Crew’ and you’ll hear the real deal.” The pair added that, despite the band being away from stages for 12 years, bunters could expect the same level of intensity at the Cambridge as they exerted back in the day. “I was pretty passionate about it, well we all were, back then, and I’m the type of person that if I’m going to commit so something I’’ll commit to it fuly,” Delfs said. “No one wants to see a bunch of washed-up has-beens just standing around. I’m going to be going out there giving it all I’ve got,” Charnock added. Catch Found My Direction when they play at the Cambridge Hotel on Saturday, November 2 and Sunday November 3 (all ages).

he countdown is on to the 153rd running of the Melbourne Cup at Flemington on Tuesday, November 5. With total prizemoney of $6.2m, it is the richest race in the southern hemisphere and attracts the best gallopers from all over the world. Last years, the Australian-trained Green Moon’s victory broke a recent run of domination by international runners (2011 – Dunaden, 2010 – Americain) – although Green Moon was actually bred in Ireland. Green Moon and Dunaden with both contest the Cup again this year. This year’s internationally-trained entries include: Dunaden, Opinion, Ruscello, Red Cadeaux, Mount Athos, Verema, Trevieres, Brown Panther, Dandino, Royal Empire and Simenon. The race that stops a nation is watched by hundreds of millions of people in 120 countries and the day forms part of the spring carnival along with AAMI Victoria Derby Day (November 2), Crown Oaks Day (November 7) and Emirates Stakes Day (November 9). The Melbourne Cup will be run at 3pm, with live coverage on Channel 7. For those looking to complement Melbourne Cup day with some live racing action, Newcastle Harness Racing Club is conducting a meeting and further afield, the ever-popular Muswellbrook Cup will be conducted.

K

yNewcastle outfit Silverhair are a slick rock and roll outfit comprising three extremely experienced musos playing all the platters that matter from the 1970s and ’80s with a decent smattering of the popular rock hits of today to suit almost any audience at almost any venue. If the likes of AC/DC, Bad Company, Hoodoo Gurus, Midnight Oil and the Foo Fighters float your boat, then you’d do well to get along to a Silverhair gig as these guys are guaranteed to please. Recently, Silverhair welcomed a new drummer into the old – Peter Shute. Shute is a Newcastle boy and has played with bands like, Freeway and Traxx and has a solid, precise style which fits well with the established Silverhair sound. He also brings another vocal into the mix, which enhances the vocal dynamics of the band. Catch Silverhair when they play at the Royal Inn, Waratah on Saturday, November 2.

Just another manic Sunday

W

hen it comes to highenergy live shows, catchy melodies and lush harmonies, Newcastle outfit Sundays Record have it in spades. The band have been performing around the traps for the past six years and, in that time, have molded themselves into quite the versatile act Sundays Record have a swag of gigs in Newcastle under their collective belt, with many high profile local and touring acts appearing on bills with Kid Courageous, Room 24 and James Reyne. Led by singer and guitarist David Gretton, backed by bassist Ben Travis and drummer Ben Chidgey, the band has formed a strong musical understanding and uniqueness in their sound. Using techniques such as vocal harmonizing and multi-melodic layering, Sundays Record create an edge in their music that is not found in other bands. Catch Sundays Record at the Shaft Tavern on Tuesday, November 5.

any restaurants in Newcastle strive to create an air of authenticity but few actually achieve it. Scuffed up dining setting at establishments that have been trading for less than a month and what looks like a decade’s worth of wax accumulating on brand new candle sticks all work hard to say, “We’ve been doing this for years so you better like our food.” But if you’re after a truly authentic dining experience without the shonky cues, you cannot go past the honest family recipes served up at Oma’s Kitchen. The cosy bistro-style restaurant has all the warmth and atmosphere of a beer hall during Oktoberfest. Fellow diners down steins of imported German beer and throw back Apfel Schnapps while the proprietors laugh

and share stories of the Fatherland. Every restaurant has its signature dish and Oma’s is the pork knuckle. Boiled, steamed and roasted over three hours this meaty chunk of heaven is served with plenty of creamy mash potato and tangy red cabbage. Cutting through the thick crackle, the meat inside was impossibly tender, flaking away from the bone and cooked to pink perfection. If you think you’ve got the appetite to devour the pork knuckle, make sure you pre-order when you book. Although the Germans are known for their sausages, schnitzels and hearty stews, even my vegetarian dining partner found a tasty option on menu – quark patties, served with red cabbage and tossed salad. Made of a smooth curd cheese popular throughout German-speaking countries in Europe, these crispy fried pancakes would satisfy the most committed of carnivores. We capped off the evening with Bavarian apple cake and quark and cherry cake and very full bellies!

here is little doubt that, when discussing the current crop of mesmerisingly talented Aussie female singer-songwriters, Mia Dyson, Liz Stringer and Jen Cloher, sit pretty close at the top of the tree. So what would happen if the three joined forces, a’la that wonderful 80s cartoon Captain Planet? Would their individual musical prowess be amplified to the nth degree, giving them the power to right all the wrongs in the world? Well, thankfully you won’’t have to wonder anymore as the trio will be swinging by Newcastle this weekend as part of a highly anticipated national tour. This year has been a red letter year for all three (who share eleven albums, multiple ARIA awards and Australian Music Prize nominations between them)

with Dyson currently riding high on the back of the international release of her 2012 long player, ‘The Moment’, Stringer fresh from a European tour of her album ‘Warm in the Darkeness’ and Cloher reaping the kudos from her third album ‘In Blood Memory’. Often “supergroups” are cooked up in record company back rooms by cynical A & R men however Stringer said their collaboration was borne out of mutial respect and long standing friendships. “It was actually Jen’s idea and it really did make perfect sense to all of us,””she said. “ The three of us already approach our songwriting very differently so it is going to be very interesting to see where we are able to take these songs,” she said. It’s also cool because I’m not singing all of the time so I get to take a step back and work on my guitar noodlings.” Catch Dyson, Stringer and Cloher at Lizotte’s on Saturday, November 2.

n their heyday, Sydney-borne electro dance-rock outfit Def FX were one of the most sonically adventurous outfits on the Australian music scene. Combining such disparate elements as psych, electronica, metal and grunge with one of the most kinetically engaging live shows, thanks in no small part to the pure rock exuberance and swagger of front woman Fiona Horne, even on a mediocre night, they were virtually untouchable. Now, some 15 years after their untimely break-up and after a highly successful hit-out last year, the band are hitting the road again and Horne told TE that she couldn’t be happier. Horne said that the idea for the reformation came about quite organically and, while she was unsure, in the first instance, that people would still

remember the band, he qualms were quickly put to rest once they retook the stage in 2012. “I had lived in the US for 12 years, bouncing back and forward to Australia and Marty [Basha, original bass player] was living on the North Coast,” she said. “Anyway, a girlfriend of mine came to America to visit and she said “you know, they’re playing Def FX songs on Australian radio again” and she suggested that we should look at doing a tour. Anyone who saw Def FX in the first go-round would know that Horne was no demure flower when she hit the stage. “I’ve found that, even now, I can still mosh away with the best of them although back then it was all about cathartic, aggressive performance but now it’s cathartic and joyous – also a great f***ing night.” Catch Def FX at the Cambridge Hotel on Friday, November 1.

f you have accepted the truism that vinyl is far superior, both aurally and stylistically to CDs and innocuous snippets of computerised data, and if the sounds of Motown and soul are your bag, then you’ll be in hog heaven this weekend when the Brand New Bag Motown and Soul Revue hits town. The brainchild of Newcastle’s own “Grandfather of Soul” Phil Dando and his daughter Caroline, the Brand New Back Motown and Soul Revue will be a celebration of the irrepressible sounds of soul with smatterings of Northern soul, R & B and blues thrown in for good measure. Dando, an ex-pat Liverpudlian who

was a teenager at the height of the UK soul boom in the late 60s and early 70s said that punters could expect cuts from the likes of Otis Reading and The Four Tops and The Temptations to get an airing alongside some rarer tunes. “Unfortunately in a lot of cases the songs weren’t major hits at the time and a lot of the acts have since broken up or passed on so the only way you’ll get to hear these songs live is hearing them played on vinyl and some of the stuff that we’ll be playing hasn’t been heard in quite some time, so it’s pretty exciting.” So just what is it about the lure of soul that has enthralled so many generations? “Soul is all about life, love and dancing and you don;t need anything else because the music will take you there” Catch the action at Stockton RSL on Friday, November 1.

ith such impossibly catchy and sing-alongable tunes as ‘Cracklin’ Rosie’, ‘Sweet Caroline’ ‘Shiloh’ and ‘Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon’ under his belt, there is little doubt that Neil Diamond knows how to write a song. While there are no plans for Diamond to visit our fair city, fans are about to be treated to the next big thing when Newcastle-based musician Ty Penshorn brings his ‘Diamond’ tribute show to Wests, Lambton this weekend. Penshorn who is perhaps best known locally as the frontman of Hornet said it had been some time since he had taken the tribute to the stage and he couldn’t wait. “Yeah it’s crazy exciting,” he said. “It has been a while and when I was

doing it before I was a lot younger so it’s probably going to be a bit more convincing this time around.” Penshorn said the show would run the gamut of Diamond’s formidable catalogue and will be delivered with an unabashed energy of a Vegas-style show, complete with an eight-piece band. “All of the greatest hits will be there, which is an interesting proposition because he has had so many, plus we’ll be adding around half a dozen other tunes to the show so it will be very full indeed.” So, just what is it about Diamond’s music that has enthralled Penshorn? “He is just such a fantastic writer,” he said. “I mean, just look at a song like ‘Sweet Caroline’ – it’s just such an uplifting tune and almost impossible not to sing along to.” Catch ‘Diamond’ at Wests, Lambton on Sunday, November 3.

loping blocks are common but most builders won’t build on a block that has even a slight slope? Most building blocks have some sort of slope so it becomes a real problem when building a home. Sanctuary New Homes is one builder that will not only build new homes on all types of sloping blocks, they will custom-design that special home for you. In fact they have designs for all types and shapes of blocks! And, according to Amanda Palmer, managing director Sanctuary New Homes, the good news is that it’s certainly affordable to design and build a cutting edge home for a sloping block that will have the dynamics and versatility to make a real statement. “We take the attitude that a sloping block presents challenges but it also enables architecturally creative features for striking results. You can go for the traditional look, a coastal look or be a bit bolder with a contemporary finish. “The important point is to not feel restricted by your sloping block. We can work to the home buyer’s budget and develop floor plans to suit the site and meet your expectations for accommodation and style as well as value,” said Amanda. Every home-buying family will have different ideas of what they would like in a home. That’s why Sanctuary New Homes have a range of designs to choose from or they can

xcavator, Joe Attard, his wife Rosemary and their two children were thrown a curveball earlier this year when their Schofield Road home of nearly two decades went through a process of acquisition to make way for the planned Rouse Hill corridor upgrade and extension. Not wanting to leave the area where their children go to school and not where their financial position would be following the quickly impending acquisition, Joe and his wife sought advice from George Allam, Allam Homes Property Sales Manager on a family friends recommendation. “After speaking with George, we ending up taking a look at a few of the estates but thought that the lots at Kalina The Ponds, were best suited to our family and lifestyle,” he said. “George happily held the lot for us while we awaited the result from the acquisition. He could have sold it ten times over, but he took our word for it.” The first family to move into the master

Kalina is close to public transport (including the future north-west rail link) quality schools, Rouse Hill Town Centre, sporting clubs and health facilities. Sophie Stanwell

Hunter Academy of Sport: Heptathlete Sophie impressing on the world stage

S

ophie Stanwell was the University of Newcastle’s standout athlete at the 2012 Australian University Games, winning Gold in the heptathlon with a point score of 5109. Her result helped the University athlete’s team to an overall Australian Universities ranking of 8th. Sophie continued her success in the following athletics season, taking out the NSW State Heptathlon title in January 2013 at the NSW State Multi Championships in Sydney. In February she claimed the title

again at the Victorian State Multi Championships in Melbourne, where she recorded a World Universiade qualifying score of 5556. In July 2013 Sophie represented Australia at the Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia. Recording a result of ninth overall and a score of 5519, Sophie achieved season best results in five of the seven disciplines. Six of the eight athletes ahead of her were 2012 London Olympians. Sophie’s dominance in the heptathlon over the last 12 months has elevated her

to the number one Australian ranked heptathlete, and number seven all-time NSW heptathlete. Her achievements have seen her nominated as a finalist for the University of Newcastle Sports Person of the Year and she has been awarded a University Blue for her outstanding performance while enrolled at, and contributing to, the University of Newcastle. Sophie has recently been recognized by Athletics NSW as an athlete likely to soon represent Australia at World Championship Level.

Heskey’s return the key to ending Jets’ goal drought Paul Monforte

E

mile Heskey returns with the weight of expectation on him after the Jets’ goalless start to the season. Heskey’s torn knee ligaments are expected to have healed for the clash with arch-rivals Central Coast Mariners at Hunter Stadium on Saturday night and the marquee striker will be relied on to convert the numerous chances his teammates have been creating. As has been the case in each game this season, Newcastle were able to create sufficient opportunities in the 0-0 draw with Wellington in Napier on Sunday, but lacked the polish to put them away. Young Socceroos Andrew Hoole could have broken the Jets’ goal drought within the first five minutes with a shot that caused Phoenix goalkeeper Glenn Moss into a hurried save. The Jets have now gone almost five halves of football without conceding a goal – a positive sign considering the defensive problems of last season’s campaign. The Mariners recorded their first victory of the season by defeating AdelaideUnited 1-0 in Gosford on Saturday, after draws against the Western Sydney Wanderers and Melbourne Heart. The Jets’ youth team opened their National Youth League season with a 2-0 loss to the Australian Institute of Sport on Saturday.
