he future of Burwood Colliery Bowling Club at Whitebirdge is under a cloud. The club, which went into voluntary administration in August last year, has until March 18 to pay back a debt of $300,000 and needs the community to get behind it, or else it could face closure. Three years of financial problems led to a change in management a fortnight ago, and now the board is taking drastic action to give the club a fighting chance of survival. “We don’t have much time but we had to do something, club president Ian Foster told The Post. Prominent accountant Terry Lawler has come on board to help the beleaguered club get a handle on its bottom line, along with fellow accountant Grahame Thomas and Josh Miller as interim secretary-manager. While the full extent of the club’s money troubles remain unclear, Mr Lawler believed the club had its work cut out for it. “The club’s in for a real battle to survive, that’s clearly going to be the case, Mr Lawler said. “There’s going to be a lot of hard work and only time will tell whether we will be successful or not, but it’s about trying to keep an asset that’s important to families and people locally, as well as the bowlers. Mr Foster said the board was focusing on live
Burwood Colliery Bowling Club interim secretary manager Josh Miller, member Terry Lawler and president Ian Foster music and events as a means of attracting patrons. Floyd Vincent will be performing this Sunday from 4pm and the club has partnered with local promoter Big Apache to host a fund-raising concert outside the club on March 8. A raffle to “save Burwood Bowlo is also being run, with tickets available from the club for $2. First prize is an instant party pack containing a barbecue, beer, wine, spirits, soft drinks, meat,
onions, bread, margarine and a packet of Panadol. “We’ve got to do all we can to keep it going because it’s a club for the community, Mr Foster said. If the club was to fold, it would be the latest in a long line to fall by the wayside recently.
