Newcastle’s The Screaming Jets have just clocked up a quarter of a century’s worth of rocking out and TE caught up with bass player PAUL WOSEEN to chat about this massive milestone

Still fresh form a mammoth North American and European tour, South London wunderkind SBTRKT is heading our way in the new year.

Far more than just a complete absence of vowels, in the last few years Aaron Jerome (as he is known to the taxman), the man behind the SBTRKT mask, has put a whole new spin on the post-dubstep landscape of indie electronica. The dance world really began paying attention to Jerome’s project back in mid-2011 with the release of SBTRKT’s eponymous debut album, which won DJ Magazine’s album of the year and reached the Top 50 Of 2011 list in publications such as NME and Pitchfork.

SBTRKT is also far more than a mere studio (or bedroom) project, having also cultivated a burgeoning reputation in the live realm where his relatively organic show featuring elements of live instrumentation and live collaboration has prevented him being merely viewed as a chap with a laptop.

Having never seen Coldplay live, I’m told that the visual elements in their live show more than make up for their sycophantic, vacuous and self indulgent brand of beige rock. Watching the DVD of the show, recorded at a purpose built amphitheatre at Sony Studios to whet fans appetites before the release of their meandering Ghost Stories album, all of the screens and audio visual whizbangery gave me a sneaking suspicion all of this smoke and mirrors behaviour hid something quite banal. Listening to the CD component culled from various shows on the album tour, my suspicions were confirmed. Given that Ghost Stories was the most innocuous and forgettable collection in the Coldplay canon, it would follow that the live version would follow suit. And it does.

Fans will probably dig it.

here’s a handful of Aussie bands that have managed to turn their success into long term careers in the music industry. The Screaming Jets is one of those bands. This is no mean feat when you consider that many bands struggle to make a name for themselves let alone sustain it for several decades like the Jets have. This year, the Aussie rockers will be celebrating their 25th anniversary with a heap of live shows and a new album in the works.

“You don’t think you’re going to last that long but part of you was always hoping that you would,” said bass player, songwriter and original member Paul Woseen about making it to 25 years.

As part of the anniversary celebrations the band are currently in the middle of a national tour which will see them, of course, returning to their old stomping ground.

Talking to Paul, it sounds like the shows are attracting a range of fans, from familiar faces to the next generation of rock enthusiasts.

“I’m 47 and there’s people out there having fun watching the band and they’re 18 or 19 - I could be their dad,” he laughed.

“I guess it’s the same sort of thing that happened to me and heaps of other people who’re playing.

“I got into certain bands from listening to mate’s brother’s records or my parents’ records.”

After forming in 1989 and cutting their teeth at Newcastle venues like the Bel Air, The Screaming Jets have gone on to earn themselves a place in Australian rock royalty. Together they’ve released six studio albums - three of which made it into the top five on the ARIA albums charts - played thousands of gigs and given music fans hit songs like Helping Hand, Better, Sad Song and October Grey.

Though Woseen and frontman Dave Gleeson are the only original members left, it’s still quite an achievement for the Jets to have made it to 25 years. For Woseen, the reason why he’s still playing with Dave and the guys is simple.

“Love of the music, love of playing together,” he said.

“We’re mates, so we’re friends and we just dig playing what we do.”

Along with the tour, the band will be releasing a new album, which is full of tracks that Paul describes as “good, hard, rocking songs”.

Last year Paul released his first acoustic solo album Bombido, which includes Jets tracks along with new material.

Talking about recording the solo album after spending years playing with the band, Paul joked that the main difference was that it was “quieter” - though the other members weren’t totally absent from the recording process.

“A lot of the songs are Jets songs that I wrote. I still hear everybody else in my

head anyway, even though they’re not there. I don’t know if that’s some sort of mental condition,” he laughed.

As songwriter for The Screaming Jets, Paul has been responsible for some of this country’s best rock tracks. These songs have become an integral part of the Australian soundtrack and Paul admits that writing the next track is never far from his mind.

“I write constantly,” he said.

“I’ve always got a little pad and pen in my little fishing bag that goes everywhere with me, my handbag. So I’ve got my smokes, my phone, pad and pen.”

Most of the inspiration for the songs comes from everyday life.

“I’ll see something written or I hear somebody say something at the pub or

a mate say something and I’ll write it down,” Paul said.

“I’ve never really just sat down with the intent to write a song, it just sort of happens.”

In regards to his music idols, Paul says it’s hard to narrow it down from the hundreds who have inspired him over the years.

“There’s just so many artists that are great but I think, I guess for me, I’m a fan of The Who and I’m a fan of Tom Petty.”

Though he has a range of bands that he loves - including the Foo Fighters and Stone Sour who are his current favourite - and spends a lot of time rocking out on stage, he doesn’t get many opportunities to see live music himself.

“I haven’t seen a band for ages, which sucks,” he said.

So at midnight, he wishes that his whole family can have a bad day.

Before too long both Alexander and his entire family are neck deep in hilarious maladies. Based on the classic children’s book from Judith Viorst, this film is surely going to be a hit these school holidays.

THE CAPTIVE Matthew steps briefly into a diner and comes out to find that his young daughter Cassandra has vanished without a trace from the back of his truck. Years later, when detectives Nicole and Jeffrey discover recent images of Cassandra online, Matthew risks everything to ensure his daughter’s safe return. While he has made a pretty decent living making lacklustre comedies, Adam Sandler is clearly at his best when taking on more dramatic roles (Reign Over Me, Punch Drunk Love) - a fact more than proved in his brilliant turn in this engrossing ensemble drama. Essentially a film that endeavours to explore the effect the internet and technology has had on relationships, this Jason Reitman (Juno, Thank You For Smoking) film takes a meandering Robert Altman-esque approach to the narrative, where a group of disparately connected storylines intersect there’s the marriage on the rocks (Adam Sandler and Rosemarie Dewitt), an overbearing mother (Jennifer Garner), a single parent trying to reconnect with his son and body-image obsessed teenage girl. While this is a starkly poignant film - that is sure to stand as a pretty accurate time capsule of relationships in the digital age - Reitman still finds time to inject some wry humour into proceedings.

How far would you go to secure your dream job?

Chances are it’s not as far as Jake Gyllenhaal goes in his latest role in Nightcrawler.

Gyllenhaal, emaciated and near unrecognisable, plays Louis Bloom, a struggling videographer trying to break into the bloodsport world of first-on-scene journalism.

Inspired by freelance cameramen on the scene of a grizzly wreck on an LA motorway, Bloom pawns a stolen road bike, gets himself a secondhand camcorder and begins trawling the streets in search of the most violence crime he can find and film.

As Bloom pushes past ethical boundaries in pursuit of higher ratings and monetary reward, there are some genuinely edge-ofyour-seat scenes as you wait, with baited-breath, to see just how far he will eventually go.

Nightcrawler offers some thought-provoking commentary on the consequences of the modern 24-hour news cycle and society’s obsession with grief porn.

A beguiling talent Kylie Jane is an enthusiastic, young entertainer who has been pricing up more than a few ears around the traps, thanks to powerful voice and and almost effortless ability to get any crowd in the palm of her hand.

Playing mostly the hits of today, she is able to take any song and make it suit her as a performer from up-beat pop songs to the classic soothing remedies we are all familiar with.

Kylie is originally from Dubbo, and is a country girl at heart.

She moved to Newcastle in early 2009 to attend Hunter School of Performing Arts.

It was here she was appointed the lead vocalist for their stage band.

After graduating in 2010, she has since been performing at a number of different venues around the Newcastle region as well as choice gigs like the Tamworth Country Music Festival With a set that includes the likes of Gnarles Barkley, Lady Gaga, Jason Mraz, INXS, Ben Harper and Crowded House, Kylie Jane certainly knows how to please a crowd - whether the mood calls for sombre torch songs or upbeat pop.

Ride on to rock and roll The Nags Head is going to be chock-a-block with rock and roll swagger and fist-pumping riffage this weekend when the Ride Ons get the lead out with their high-energy brand of swampy rock and roll.

Hailing from Sydney, the Ride Ons came together in 2004 with three core members Ben Nightingale (Sleepy Jackson, Don Walker, the Clouds), Murray Shepherd (the Monarchs, The Screaming Tribesmen) and Matty Stokes (the Chevrons, Great Dividing Range) before Newcastle bass-ace Leith Tisdell (Great Dividing Range, Jacuzzi Suit) was recruited into the fold in 2009.

The boys have since released a cracking EP, Transmission: On and, as the man in the hat once said “do yourself a favour”.

This risotto was cooked perfectly smoky, yet sweet, with bacon in a tomato sauce, fresh zucchini and a hint of rosemary. I devoured every tiny grain of rice and could have had more.

My dining partner enjoyed a sweet and creamy dish in his pumpkin penne - not too heavy, just delicious.

Stepping inside, you’re greeted by friendly staff and a cozy vibe - think sparkling chandeliers, plush sofas and date night - while outside, the venue’s main asset is on show, an enormous courtyard, complete with lush planting and water features, that’s perfect for a summer gettogether with enough room for all your mates.

The menu has been crafted to be just as versatile as the dining spaces.

Owners, husband and wife hospitality duo, Janet and Leo Della Grotta, the business brains behind the ever-popular Pronto Pasta, have brought considerable Italian flair to a menu that also features favourites like schnitzels, fish and chips, café melts, and sharable Spanish tapas.

Making the most of the aforementioned courtyard, on our recent visit to Max’s we chose to dine al fresco.

We started off our night with shared starter from the specials board, crostini with pumpkin feta and olives. These crispy morsels were impeccably balanced with sweet roasted pumpkin, savoury Kalamata olives and creamy feta. A delicious beginning to our evening.

While his last solo effort - the brilliant Last of the Tourists dropped back in 2012, that’s not to say that Thomas has been resting on his laurels.

In 2013, produced and directed the critically acclaimed theatre production inspired by the Tasmania’s historically significant convict records, The Vandemonian Lags (also featuring the likes of Tim Rogers, Brian Nankervis, Ben Salter and Jeff Lang) as well as taking over the reins of the Yarra Hotel in Melbourne and turning it into quite a brilliant little live music venue.

“Lags is a massive project that has required a hell of a lot of work, but it has also been immensely gratifying,” he said.

“However, there is an element of frustration because we have only done four shows so it would be good to see all that hard work put to more use.

“I kind of liken it to having the most beautiful woman/man coming up to you but you only have the opportunity to kiss them, like, four times a year, it may not be enough for you, but you’re always going to take those kisses.”

With the new year beckoning, Thomas said there were plans in the works to release a retrospective of his postWeddoes work.

“There’s a lot of that stuff that’s long out of print so it would be good to resurrect it,” he said.

“It’s not really a full stop, but a nice little hyphen to the next phase.”

hen Victorian folk-rock band Weddings Parties Anything called it a day in 1998, their unique combination of indie, ‘60s folk, country and punk left a huge hole in the Aussie popular music landscape.

Spurred on, in no small part, by singersongwriter Mick Thomas’s erudite, yet unpretentious, lyrics and delivery, the band gained a cult following around the country with some pundits referring to their excellent debut album, Scorn of the Women, as one of the greatest Australian rock debuts.

Thankfully, when Weddings Parties Anything bowed out from the scene leaving scores of “Wedheads” despondent, Thomas continued to ply his trade as a solo artist and in various line-ups with a string of albums that would arguably put him up there as one of the most criminally ignored songwriters of his generation.

Now, Thomas is heading to Newcastle as part of his Christmas Time Already tour with his band The Roving Commission - a Yuletide tradition started by the “Weddoes” way back when.

“It’s good to be getting back on the road because I don’t really get to tour as much as I used to,” he told TE. “Also, I never get tired of telling people that Newcastle was the first place that Weddings Parties Anything ever charted

The tornado continues hen TE last caught up with Morgan Evans back in July, the rising country star had already ticked off a list of achievements - three CMC awards, his debut album riding high in the country charts, a festival stealing show at CMC Rocks the Hunter and a bucket list performance at the legendary country music Mecca the Grand Ole Opry.

Fast forward a couple of months and the plaudits are still coming thick and fast for Evans who has since inked a management deal with the William Morris Endeavour agency, snagged a choice presenting, host and ambassador gig for Foxtel’s Country Music Channel, nabbed a male artist Golden Guitar nomination as well as a top 50 shortlist spot in the Vanda and Young songwriting competition for his track Like a Tornado. Phew!

“I think that when I’m feeling a bit down about myself, I need to call you guys up because you always make me feel pretty good,” Evans laughed.

“But seriously, this year has been so overwhelming - it’s probably the best year I’ve had so far.”

To see out such a successful 2014, Evans will be heading to Cessnock where he will play his final full band show of the year

“Yeah, we’ve played a lot of gigs this year so it’s going to be good to have a bit of a break, but I really can’t wait to get back to Cessnock - it’s always a great time.”

Having been on the road consistently since the release of his debut, self titled album in March, Evans said that he is

finally getting back into the swing of things as far as writing new material is concerned and he said he planned to start recording in the new year.

“This album has kept me pretty busy, which is great, but over the past couple of weeks I’ve found that I’ve been getting back into that songwriting mode although, at the same time, I’m not really one to sit

down and bash out a song - I like to sit on ideas for a while and let them develop - so in that sense, touring works well because you do have a lot of downtime in airports and hotels where the ideas just come.

“But, for now, the plan is to release another single from the album - we actually just shot a video for it - early next year and then start on the next one.”

“For all of the traveling I’ve done around the world, Australia and New Zealand remain two of my favourite places to perform. ith their highly anticipated debut EP pushed back to sometime in the new year, it’s not all frowns for fans of Newcastle five piece Twin Lakes as they can console themselves with yet another cracking single in Wolf Hall. With the sweeping slice of indie pop Glacier and its followup, The Ageing Field creating quite a stir around the traps, Wolf Hall makes for an intriguing trifecta of singles, promising a corker of an EP once it hits the streets.

“The idea is that there is evil that is within everyone and the Wolf Hall is that place in the mind where the evil is

brewed and in some cases acted upon,” frontman Eddie Garvan told TE. “The music is kind of bright and breezy and the lyrics are a little bit dark which was definitely the way I wanted to approach the song when I was writing it.”

While fans have been waiting for what seems like an eternity for the EP, the band have been touring as much as possible, honing their layered sound and welcoming new keyboard player Ben Russell into the fold. “It’s still early days as he’s only been with us a couple of months but he also brings his own set of influences to the table which can only expand upon what we’re already doing.”

Don’t pass me by STEPHEN BISSET

t may’ve been some time since Melbourne-via-Brooklyn duo Luluc (Steve Hassett and Zoe Randall) have headlined an Australian tour (four years, in fact), but kicking off their national run this week, the pair certainly have plenty of reasons to celebrate.

Having just come off a massive North American tour with Dinosaur Jr frontman J Mascis, Luluc are currently riding high off the back of their brilliant sophomore album Passerby.

Co-produced by Aaron Dessner from Ohio indie rock darlings The National, Passerby has been pricking up ears all over the shop with Sub Pop co-founder Jonathan Poneman signing the band to his iconic label just 48 hours after hearing the masters and the National frontman Matt Berninger declaring “I’ve played Passerby on repeat - for months it was the only album I wanted to listen to.”

“It really is amazing how well received the album has been, so far,” Randall told TE.

Randall said that Passerby was a much more eclectic effort than their debut effort Dear Hamlyn.

“Dear Hamlyn was very much inspired

by Pink Moon by Nick Drake and, as such, didn’t really break out of its mood,” she said.

“This one, though is a lot more eclectic and expansive and, where we recorded the last one ourselves, we realised that we didn’t really have the skill set to tackle the record ourselves the way we wanted, so that’s where Aaron came in, and I think he did a remarkable job.”

The year of living hilariously STEPHEN BISSET

fter shocking Australia last year with the announcement that he was leaving the desk of his number-one rating Melbourne radio breakfast shift on Nova 100 after a decade as well as his regular gig on Channel Ten’s The Project after almost four years, comedian Dave Hughes said that 2014 would be all about stand up.

He wasn’t lying, either.

By the time Hughesy hits Belmont 16’s this Friday, he would have performed more than 100 shows across the country to more than 60,000 punters and he told TE that he couldn’t be happier.

“Mate, I’m just absolutely loving being back onstage again and the shows have been brilliant,” he said.

“When I’m up there, time just seems to fly by - it’s a really good time.”

Aside from reminding Australia why he is one of this country’s most bankable funnymen, Hughes also took his comedy stylings overseas earlier this year, performing shows in Los Angeles, London’s West End and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal.

“The overseas trip was really good - I took my whole family, my wife and my three kids with me so it was a bit of a working holiday. I did find that I had to alter the routine a little it - it turns out that they don’t have musk sticks in America or the UK if you can believe that.

“All of the shows wen really well, though, especially LA - I actually started thinking about what it would be like to be living there and having a decent crack at the US but my wife wasn’t too keen.”

Regardless, Hughes said he never imagined he would be plying his trade in the comedy mecca.

“It is pretty amazing -I mean I grew up watching all of these great American comedians like Sam Kinison and Rodney Dangerfield so having the opportunity to perform at some of the places they did was just phenomenal.

With 2014 drawing to a close, Hughes said 2015 would be more of the same, along with a return to the world of radio.

“The plan is to do a lot more standup next year, but I’m also doing the drive slot on Kiis FM - which is a lot more family friendly than doing breakfast because too many late nights and early mornings will drive you insane.”
