ith a plot that sounds like it was ripped straight out of one of Michael Bay’s fever dreams - as a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse – in the hands of visual adventurist Guillermo del Torro (‘Pan’s Labyrinth’, ‘Hellboy’) the result is far from a one-dimensional special effects vehicle.

Sure, the special effects are here, in spades, but a believable cast including ‘Sons Of Anarchy’s’ Charlie Hunnam and Ron Pearlman and the always compelling Idris Elba (‘Luther’) lifts this well and truly above the pack.

until a vampire named Lestat (Tom Cruise in a career defining role) offers him the chance to become a denizen of the undead. Louis accepts and his blood is replaced with Lestat’s vampiric claret and now Louis must learn the ways of the vampire.

Pitt and Cruise are both excellent here and the tension they create onscreen is palpable. A very young Kirsten Dunst also shows her early acting chops as the mini-vamp Claudia.

here are no rules with Tumbleweed, but there are a few things you can rely on. It can get heavy, but it’s got to groove. No tricks, either – Big Muffs and wah pedals only, and everything goes straight onto analogue tape. As it was then, it is now.

After an extensive writing process – the band reconvened in their old rehearsal space, working riffs and sketches (some dating back to 1995) into full, technicolour songsMcKercher spent a whirlwind 12 days with the band in Rancom studios, and another 12 days mixing at The Grove.

‘Sounds From The Other Side’ stands among their best, and if this is the end of the Tumbleweed story, then it’s a hell of a full stop. Though it feels like there a few more chapters to come.

hen New York outfit Helmet released their incendiary sophomore album ‘Meantime’ in 1992, they helped usher in a new era of post-metal – the ripples of which can still be felt to this day. Their sound – a ground breaking mix of a kind of Big Black abrasiveness, an attitude shared by many of their New York brethren in the hardcore scene and guitarist Page Hamilton’s signature staccato and jazz-inspired riffing made them impossible to ignore.

Now, some 23 years since releasing their debut LP ‘Strap It On’ the band is heading back to Australia but this time they are upping the ante by brining those masters of sludge metal, The Melvins in tow in what promises to be one of the gigs of the year.

Frontman Page Hamilton told TE that the prospect of reuniting with their old touring buddies was an enticing one.

“Yeah, man we couldn’t be more excited,” he said.

“We toured together in a van many many years ago – one van two bands – and we just had an amazing time.

Needless to say we are looking forward to our Australian tour with our longtime friends minus the overnight drives, blizzards and floor surfing. The Melvins are just so damn good – I just love what

they’re doing recently as well – that two drummer sound is just awesome.”

In preparation for the Australian tour, Hamilton said the band had just recorded new tracks for a split 7” with The Melvins

on the legendary Amphetamine Reptile label and that rehearsals for the tour had taken the band to places they might not have expected.

Melvins split which is sounding pretty great and the last time we rehearsed we revisited some things that we haven’t played in years,” he said.

“There was some stuff from ‘Betty’, ‘Size Matters’ and even some stuff from [latest album] ‘Seeing Eye Dog’ that we haven’t played much that will probably end up in the set.”

While there’s no doubt that Helmet’s brand of “thinking man’s metal” has inspired countless bands the world over, the ever-humble Hamilton said he chooses no to dwell on the band’s place in the popular music pantheon.

“I never really think about Helmet in terms of how we’ve influenced anything or anyone,” he said.

“I mean, it’s nice to have people think that way about the band but for us, we have always been more concerned with moving forward writing-wise and not repeating ourselves. I mean, I knew Helmet was a good band within six months of us getting together – from then on it has been all about keeping it good.

“Also, I think Helmet’s evolution has been very natural and never forced. I guess we were lucky, in a way because we never really belonged to any kind of scene, and the music wasn;t based around any image, either.

“We’re also still very passionate about what we do - I mean, I’m a 53-year-old guy and I still practice guitar every day.”

eciding to tread the sometimes trepidatious path of a working musician has been a right of passage for burgeoning talent Ashleigh Dallas. The granddaughter of country music icon and Country Music Roll of Renown recipient Rex Dallas, Dallas was just two-and-a-half years old when she had her first music lesson and was playing the fiddle by age six.

Her big break came when she was approached by Kasey Chambers, in 2011, to tour and play fiddle in her band. This was the start of a strong musical friendship that has seen Dallas travel the world as part of Chambers’ band as well as opening shows for the songwriter in Australia.

Her star continues to soar this year with the release of her debut album ‘Dancing With a Ghost’.

ith the X Factor Live tour set to roll into Newcastle this week, the show has been kicked into overdrive with the announcement that top-ten contestant Barry Southgate will be joining the Newcastle and Sydney legs of the tour.

Already boasting the formidable talents of 2013 winner Dami Im and the remaining top five contestants Taylor Henderson, Jai Waetford, Third D3gree and Jordan Tolli, the addition of Southgate’s infectious personality and incredibly smooth vocal stylings is sure to make the show even more an attractive prospect.

TE caught up with Southgate last week and he said that he was over the moon that he was included in the tour.

“I didn’t expect it at all so when I got the call I was like “what the heck? This is awesome,” Southgate said.

“First they invited me to the Sydney show and that itself was exciting but then they called me two days later and said that they felt that I would be great for Newcastle as well and I was like “yes!”

I’m really pumped.”

“Just to get the chance to hang with the X Factor family as well, you know. I spoke to a couple of them yesterday and everyone is really excited – it’s going to be a huge party. I can’t wait.

Southgate, who under the guidance of mentor Danni Minogue rose to the X Factor top-ten, said that the experience he gained on the show was invaluable.

“I wasn’t even going to initially auditon for the show,” he said.

“At the last minute I decided to audition so I flew to Melbourne and it changed everything. It was hard though because I lost my second mum to cancer during boot camp and that was just impossible to go through – I don’t know how I did it but it really gave me the strength and that extra backbone to push and to make the most of the opportunity.

“I feel as though I entered the show a singer and I left as a performer.

“Danni was also really good – I know she was hard on me in the beginning but she’s only hard on people that she really believes in and she told me something that really changed my mindset. She said “stop trying to be so perfect. The worst that can happen is that you are going to make a mistake.”

HARVEY CONTINUES TO CLIMB

ailing from a small country town on the Mid North Coast, it was on the long trips to and from the city that Brooke Harvey first developed a genuine fascination for music.

At just three years of age, Harvey began to serenade her parents from the back seat of the car. On high rotation were the songs which became some of her earliest musical influences like Dolly Parton, Emi-Lou Harris, Linda Ronstadt and Patsy Cline. It was at the age of eight that Harvey strummed her very first chord on the guitar and, not long after, began writing songs of her own.

Throughout her early teenage years, she went on to perform in various local festivals and cafes in the Newcastle and Hunter Region and her song, ‘Shiny Car’, was selected to feature on the smokestack compilation CD which resulted in her song being play listed on ABC 1233 and 2NUR Radio. here’s only one problem I have with Thai food – it’s very filling. Knowing that I would be venturing overseas to Carrington on the weekend to indulge in cuisine from Paragon Thai I prepared myself by only having a light lunch. Still, I was defeated by deliciousness.

My dining partner and I sampled a number of items from the entrée menu – spring rolls, curry puffs, fish cakes, chicken wings, chicken satay and money bags. I enjoyed them all, but if I had to choose a winner it would be the money bags. The minced chicken and vegetables in a pastry pouch is mild enough to satisfy those who are intolerant to spice, while the sweet chilli dipping sauce added the perfect amount of zing for those who require a little more.

For mains, we shared a vegetable pad see-ew and a yellow curry with duck. I must confess, I’ve had the pad see-ew before, and I ordered it well aware of how good it would be. What’s fantastic about this noodle dish is that as well as tasting great, it’s easy to eat. The noodles are soft, the vegies are crisp and you don’t find yourself dripping sauce everywhere, which is a definite plus. I’ve never had a Yellow Curry before, so I was concerned that I might burn my tongue off, but that didn’t happen. The curry was creamy and flavoursome, so much so, that if it weren’t rude to do so, I might have drunk some straight from the bowl.

This was the point where I knew I had been defeated, but thankfully I had kept my second dessert stomach empty all day. Sticky date and sticky rice puddings ahoy! Both were warm, gooey and sensational. I can’t pick a winner, so I guess you’ll just have to try both.

fter pricking up more than their fair share of ears with their debut EP ‘My Castle’ last year – Melbourne jangly and angular indie-rockers We The People look to have gone one better with their latest short player, ‘The Truth About Fables’.

The five track EP bristles with riffs that are hookier than Rex Hunt’s tackle box and lush harmonies that are almost guaranteed to have you singing along with abandon. The band will be hitting our fair city this month and drummer Jonathon Ferraro told TE that, much like their recorded efforts, punters could expect a healthy dose of frivolity when We The People hit the stage.

“There is quite a large focus on the fun we’re having onstage in our shows and I’d like to think that our music promotes dancing so we hope that is reflected in our audiences so, come along and jump around like idiots,” he said.

Since releasing ‘My Castle’ the band have drawn favourable comparisons to the likes of The Wombats and Two Door Cinema Club, but there is a kind of refreshing earnestness on ‘The Truth About Fables’ that sets the band apart from the norm. Ferraro said that the process for the new EP differed to that of ‘My Castle’ in that the set was put together from songs already on the We The People backburner – a fact which belies the strong sense of continuity on the record.

“Yeah the latest one is really a combination of a lot of songs we already had up our sleeves and we recorded in a few different places as well – this wasn’t something that we planned, just something that kind of evolved and we’re all really happy with the result – we were actually planning to release a series of singles until we realised we haqd a bunch of songs that would work well together.”

With the tour taking them pretty much to the end of the year, Ferarro said that, after the Christmas break, the band were planning to head into the studio again.

“We’ve already got a couple of songs that we’re keen to record so we’re planning on heading into the studio in the new year, although we’re not sure if it’s going to be singles, an EP or an album – we’ll just have to wait and see.”

fter packing up stumps and relocating Stateside, Aussie-born singer songwriter Jordie Lane is heading home with a cracking new EP under his belt.

While his previous releases relied heavily on a stripped back DIY aesthetic, with Lane handling all production duties, this time around, he has unleashed a massive-sounding set that revels in a lush 70s-esque aesthetic that compliments his stock-in-trade lyrical folk sound to a tee.

Lane enlisted the services of Nashville based knob-twiddler Skylar Wilson, who has lent his talents to the likes of Justin Townes Earle and rockabilly queen Wanda Jackson and he said there was a sense of relief being able to hand the reins over to someone else for a while.

“Yeah, it is very different to the last albums in that we brought Skylar on board as well as a really killer band,” he said.

“We basically sat in a studio in Nashville for three days bashing it out and while it was a bit scary at first putting your faith in a complete stranger, it was really nice to be able to sit back, in a way, and let

someone else take a bit of the control.

Skylar is an amazing band leader and really in tune with what I wanted to do sonically.”

Lane, who now calls Eagle Rock California home said that, at first, the idea of relocating to the other side of the world did seem quite daunting, but judging by the reception he has been getting across North America, he seems to be finding his feet just fine.

“It was quite tough in the beginning because it wasn’t just about starting to live in another country and slowing down on the touring,” he said.

“The first night I arrived I literally dropped off my belongings and went straight to a show in San Francisco. It’s been quite a hectic time and I haven’t really had time to process it all but it’s definitely been worthwhile.”

support with Watson in his home town of Austin, she took it upon herself to bring the legend to Newcastle.

“We played with Dale before – we opened up for him at the Continental Club in Austin which was just amazing,” she said.

“I mean, just being able to play at the Continental Club is pretty special in itself but being able to play with Dale just made it an absolutely electric night.

“Anyway, I discovered that he was doing an Australian tour and there were no Newcastle dates so I thought that I should rectify that.”

No strangers to the road, Virus said she couldn’t imagine a life away from to4urirng.

“It really is that troubadour thing,” she said.

“If I’m home too long I tend to get itchy feet. Also, the essence of being an artist is taking your art to as many people as possible and as an independent musician I have always loved touring and just seeing the different reactions in different parts of the country and just the wonderful hospitality afforded us – it’s just brfilliant.”

An anarchic triumph STEPHEN BISSET

s soon as you enter the opulent bevelled mirror and velour-adorned spiegeltent, pitched conspicuously in Wheeler place, you’ll get the feeling that Spiegelworld’s latest production ‘Empire’ isn’t going to be your ordinary night of theatre. Even as the almost full house was filing in for opening night, the eclectic denizens of the Empire world, in somewhat of a “Brechtian moment”, broke the fourth wall and weaved their way through the crowd offering an entrée to the sumptuous and jawdropping main meal that was to come.

The aptly monikered Miss A in A Bubble kicked off proceedings in a sphere suspended from the ceiling and performed a series of impossible acrobatic contortions.

The hosts for the evening, the husband and wife team of Oscar and

Fanny threatened to steal the show with a healthy dose of high camp comedy relief. The couple’s raunchy and anarchic act had the audience in stitches and an audience participation segment that left little to the imagination was simply hilarious. Another standout was Black Flinstone and Big Mac Boy – a human juggling act whose death defying feats caused more than a few gasps from the crowd.

The final 10 minutes of the show will leave you breathless with an act that was a masterclass in concentration and athleticism. You might think there is not much entertainment to be found in a bunch of sticks and a feather but once you have seen 3D Graffitti Guy, you’ll know just how wrong you were.

‘Empire’ strikes a perfect balance between knee-slapping anarchic humour and jaw-dropping feats of human skill and daring. ‘Empire’ is an absolute triumph.

‘Empire’ is on at Wheeler Place until Sunday, December 8.

hile he has worn many hats throughout his long and eclectic career, Jon English has no hesitation when it comes to picking a favourite creative outlet.

“Rock and roll is definitely still my favourite thing to do – it’s completely its own animal,” he told TE. “While I still enjoy theatre, film and television, the feedback you get playing rock and roll is immediate and that feeling you get playing in front of a great rock and roll crowd is just unbeatable.”

It would make sense, then, that English would be giving his ‘Rock Show’ concept – a revue-style show that celebrates the classic rock hits of the 60s, 70s and 80s with a stellar cast of Australia’s up-andcomers another go-round with ‘Trilogy of Rock’. English said ‘Trilogy of Rock’ was essentially a “best of” the previous shows, ‘The Rock Show’, ‘The Rock Show More’

and ‘Rock Revolution’.

The show runs the gamut of rock classics from the likes of The Who, Janis Joplin, AC/DC, The Kinks , Deep Purple and pretty much anyone else you could name and this time around he will be bringing to Hunter-based musos with him – singer-songwriter Amy Vee and Singleton-bred ‘Voice’ contestant and multi-instrumentalist Nathan Allgood.

“Yeah, it’s a very full show and this one will have a bit more of a focus on the blues because a lot of those early sixties bands were highly influenced by the blues.

“Also, the band is just fantastic and its great to se the young musos catching on to such great music.”

English, who has been treading the boards since fronting the symphonic rock outfit Sebastian Hardie in 1968, said live performance was ingrained in his DNA. “After all these years I’m still having immense fun with it so, why stop now?”

Catch ‘Trilogy of Rock’ at Cessnock Performing Arts Centre on Friday, November 22 and Belmont 16s on Saturday, November 23.
