f you are looking for a film that examines the human condition or tries to make sense of man’s place in this crazy universe, you’d probably want to give Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s latest outing a wide berth. If, on the other hand, you are after a film that his literally chock-a-block full of fantastic set pieces and heart-pounding action, then get your hands on this as soon as possible.

Johnson stars as construction company owner John Matthews whose estranged son, Jason, is arrested for drug trafficking.

Facing a lengthy prison sentence, Jason has nothing to offer to the powers that be to get out of his time.

Desperately, John convinces the DEA and the DA to allow him to go undercover and help make arrests big enough to free his son in return.

Sure it sounds implausible, but Johnson truly delivers in possibly his best role yet.

hile it never lives up to their slice of indie-pop perfection, ‘Bakesale’, Sebadoh’s latest release and first in 14 years is a pretty darn fine album that is sure to win the band more fans.

While much of the sonic aesthetic on ‘Defend Yourself’ is what you would have come to expect from Lou Barlow and Co. – fuzzed-up power chords, weird tunings and lashings of lo-fi dynamics, there is little in this set to suggest that this is a band who as dated.

Standouts include the album opener ‘I Will’ – a track that starts out quite unassumingly before exploding into a driving rocker and the pop punk-esque rambler ‘State of Mine’.

While they still revel in a very lo-fi milieu (although this one is still more polished than ‘Bakesale’ or ‘Harmacy’) there is a very well pop sensibility in camp Sebadoh and this album showcases it extremely well.

Indie heaven.

he Farrelley brothers (‘Dumb and Dumber’, ‘Me Myself and Irene’) have always had a direct line to this reviewer’s funny bone and this guffaw fest is an unabashed masterclass in how to generate a laugh.

Ben Stiller stars as the affable geek, Ted, who was going to go to prom with one of the most beautiful girls in school, Mary (Cameron Diaz).

Unfortunately, thanks to an unusual, highly embarrassing, and hilarious mishap, Ted’s prom plans go completely pear-shaped. Thirteen years later he realizes he is still in love with Mary, so he hires a private investigator (Matt Dillon) to track her down. That investigator discovers he too may be in love with Mary, so he gives Ted some false information to keep him away from her. But soon Ted finds himself back into Mary’s life, as we watch one funny scene after another.

fter twenty years of serving up ironic, often self-effacing and always brilliantly crafted pop, indie, new wave, or whatever genre may take their fancy, no-one could accuse Regurgitator of painting themselves into a sonic corner.

Their latest album, the aptly titled ‘Dirty Pop Fantasy’ is no different. Lashings of garage pop-punk, new wave, and even the odd nod to the 80s power ballad and softer acoustic numbers, all melded into a surprisingly cohesive whole show that this is one band that, after eight albums, is still excited at the prospect of where they can take their music.

Bass player and vocalist Ben Ely told TE said that it was a conscious decision to traverse as many genres as possible on ‘Dirty Pop Fantasy’ and thus more time was spent in the writing process.

“I think the last album [‘SuperHappyFunTimesFreinds’] was pretty much done

in around two weeks, so yeah, the approach this time around was a little different,” he laughed.

“We spent about six months writing the album because we wanted to make each song really strong in its own genre – we wanted them to be able to stand on

their own but work as an album as well.”

The band decided to create this particular pop fantasy in the bustling, neon-soaked metropolis of Hong Kong and Ely said that the choice of location informed what ended up on the album immensely but, not for reasons you might think.

“We really did want to focus on the writing and while we were in Hong Kong we were staying in an apartment where we really couldn’t make all that much noise so a lot of the writing was done with just an acoustic guitar and a drum machine,” he said.

“I think this really helped in getting inside the structures of the song and made it easier to record them once we were in the studio.”

Regurgitator have always been a band that, despite putting time in on major labels, have existed slightly outside of the mainstream and never quite willing to tow the company line. Ely said the fact that the band had been able to exist for so long, despite their ‘upstartedness’, and now be labelled elder statesmen on indie rock, was a point of pride.

“We only started the band for our own personal enjoyment, we were never chasing any kind of stardom deal and we certainly were never interested in becoming part of the system,” he said.

“But that whole elder statesmen thing is quite nice, I guess. It is quite a compliment to have these young electro-pop punk kinds coming up to you and telling you how you’ve influenced their band.”

Since they hit the stratosphere with their genredefining debut album ‘Tu-Plang’, Regurgitator have owned pretty much every stage they’ve played on – a fact anyone who caught their blistering set at this year’s ‘Groovin’ The Moo’ set in Maitland can attest.

However, this current tour will be the last for the ‘Gurge for sometime with the band going on an indefinite hiatus for family reasons.

“Yeah, Quan [Yeomans, vocalist/guitarist] is expecting his first baby next year so we will be taking a fair bit of time out from the band which, I guess is even more reason to come check us out this time,” he said.

“Newcastle has always been great - it’s probably in the top three most enthusiastic crowds in Australia so I hope you guys turn it on for us.”

fter exploring slicker production techniques on his last album ‘Soho Strays’ Canadian, now adopted Aussie bluesman Wolf Mail decided to go back to basics for his latest album ‘Above the Influence’ and the results are astounding.

Mail will be in Newcastle next month as part of an extensive 20-date national tour which kicked off this month.

“We’re actually right in the thick of it right now – the new album seems to be getting a very good reception which is fantastic,’ Mail told TE. The Montreal-born, California-raised Blues-rocker has arrived at a blues guitar style all his own, sparked initially by idol Elmore James and polished on thousands of stages in more than twenty countries during a nomadic career spanning 27 years.

Mail said that the main focus of the album was to bring everything back to its roots – creating as much of a live feel in the studio as possible and relying on very few overdubs.

“This album was all about trying to get back to the rawness of the blues – I

found that my last album [Soho Strays’] was maybe a little bit too polished and produced. ‘Above the Influence’ was more about getting back to the roots.”

Given that he is perhaps more at home on the road than off, it should come as no surprise that the new batch of songs were well worn in by the time it came time to record.

“For me, it’s all about taking the new songs out and playing them as much as possible on the road so we went on a tour of Europe last year and then headed into a studio in the Netherlands to record it,” he said.

“While this kind of music really does need to be spontaneous in order for it to truly work, knowing the songs really well going into recording is a definite advantage because then you are able to experiment with the structures a bit more.”

afé de Beaumont has been a fixture on Beaumont Street’s iconic restaurant scene for as long as I can remember. After my first dining experience in this eatery for quite some time, it was not hard to see why.

After taking a seat, my dining partner and I were greeted by some friendly wait staff who, refreshingly, had a thorough working knowledge of the menu, the nightly specials and the extensive beverage list.

After a quick peruse of the conciseyet-eclectic menu, we decided on the bruschetta to start which proved to be the perfect way to warm up our taste buds. Large enough for two to share, two healthy slices of thick-cut sourdough arrived, piled high with fresh tomato, red onion and feta and drizzled with olive oil and balsamic. This zesty and super fresh dish was a delight.

Moving on to mains, I decided on the salt and pepper squid. Perhaps best described as a souped-up version of the pub classic, the Café de Beaumont interpretation took the dish to a whole new level. Marinated in kiwi fruit, the perfectly seasoned squid was cooked to beautifully with no hint of chewiness to be found. A creamy and subtle wasabi aioli really made the dish sing and its gentle kick highlighted the salt and pepper in the quid. The addition of a bright, fresh and crisp salad was just the thing needed to complete the dish. On face value, this was quite a simple main, but the way each flavour balanced out perfectly and played off each other rather than competing is what made it stand out.

My dining partner decided on the special of the night which was lamb shanks, wrapped in prosciutto, served with crunchy baby chat potatoes and lightly minted peas. To say that this dish was flavour-packed would be an understatement. A generous serving of melt-in-the-mouth tender lamb married perfectly with a rich olive and tomato jus while the potatoes added the perfect backdrop, soaking up the delicious jus while the crisp snow peas gave a refreshing textural contrast.

ith all of the pratfalls, hot-aired filibustering and general silliness of the Australian Federal Election still fresh in our minds, it seems like the perfect time for the Sydney Theatre Company’s hilarious Wharf Revue to cut their usual satirical swathe through the Aussie political landscape.

Their latest show, ‘Whoops’ is heading to the Civic Theatre and star, director and ex-pat Novocastrian Jonathan Biggins told TE this could be perhaps the biggest show yet.

“Some of the shows that we have done in the past have perhaps not sat as well as they could have in large venues like the Civic, but this one it quite a large show – it’s probably the densest we’ve ever done so it should work wonderfully at the Civic,” he said.

Biggins added that there was certainly no shortage of satirical fodder on the hustings, on both sides of the spectrum, this time around.

“We kicked off the show three days before the election, but you didn’t really have to be Nostrodamus to figure out the outcome,” he said.

“The Wharf Revue is that it is the theatre of the absurd and that’s exactly what this election was - I

mean, you have Tony Abbott, a man who had been previously declared unelectable, bludgeoning his way to the top job and then you’ve got the likes of Sophie Mirabella who, unfortunately for us, but fortunately for everyone else, lost her seat and Clive Palmer – plenty of fodder to be had.

“Also, this time more than any other elections, the media coverage was just nonsensical and very ripe for lampooning.”

A comedic bane in the lives of pollies and popculture denizens for more then a decade now, the Wharf Revue crew (Biggins, Drew Forsythe, Phillip Scott, with Amanda Bishop, Simon Burke and Andrew Worboys joining the 2013 incarnation) have become a bit of an institution on the Sydney theatre scene not least for their boisterous and brilliant songs, such as a knee-slapping duet with Clive Palmer and Gina Reinhart (just seeing Drew Forsythe as the much-maligned female mining magnate is surely worth the price of admission alone.

“We also have a wonderful Wizard of Oz number where the ALP are searching for a brain, a heart and some nerve as well as some stuff on the Arab Spring uprising – it’s definitely going to be quite a hoot.”

hile the name Lester the Fierce may conjure up images of a curmudgeonly troll underneath a bridge or a vanquished giant from a fairytale, the truth couldn’t be further removed.

In fact, Lester the Fierce is the moniker of the beguiling Melbourne singer-songwriter Anita Lester who has just released her brooding and deeply personal debut EP ‘Summer Deluge’ Lester, who is currently in the middle of a national tour with Ngaiire, told TE that she was overjoyed with the prospect of touring.

“On this tour, half of it will be with a full band and half will be just me solo so it has been really good for me to mix up the dynamics a little bit.”

After just a scant listen to the EP, it becomes obvious that Lester is set to stand apart from the glut of female indie singer songwriters – largely for a well-honed knack for intricate yet subtle arrangements and a lyrical turn of phrase that bristles with raw emotion and honesty.

Citing the likes of Leonard Cohen, and the beat poets Lester said that the EP traverses much musical ground over its five tracks.

“Musically, I specifically wanted to try a couple of different things as kind of a calling card of what I can do so there’s

some tinges of country/folk with maybe a bit of Beck thrown in and even a little bit of 90s grunge,” she said.

Given the highly personal nature of Lester’s songs, she said that it can be sometimes difficult, but always rewarding to perform them live.

“There are still a couple of songs on there that I have trouble singing in front of people,” she said.

“That said, it is a totally cathartic process for me and actually, before I get onstage I find that I really need to get into that particular zone because if I’m not totally present in the moment I find myself thinking “oh God, there are all these people watching me sing” and I am taken out of the moment, so I find it’s best to do bit of meditating before I go on to really get myself prepared because, audiences know when things are forced and insincere.”

t’s pretty much a given that the sartorial splendour and revved up sound of rockabilly has always had a great home here in Newcastle. To ram that point home, the good folks at the Wicko are putting on another one of their monthly Rockabilly Riots this weekend.

Just check out this line-up – you’ve got local rockabilly icons Pat Capocci, Dave Rumbler and the Matadors and the Two Timin’ Playboys will be joining forces with Melbourne’s Coral Lee and the Silver Scream and Canberra’s Little Mac and the Monster Men in their inaugural Newcastle performance.

Ex-pat Maitland rocker Capocci told TE that any opportunity to play the Wicko is always a welcome one, but the quality of this bill made it even more attractive.

“It is a really quality line-up with some of the biggest now bands in the Aussie rockabilly scene t day,” he said.

“I mean, Coral Lee is just an amazing guitarist and Little Mac and the Monster Men are just phenomenal as well so it will definitely be a great show.”

When it comes to camp Capocci, things are definitely on the up and up as well.

“Yeah, well since the last time we spoke, we’ve done two trips to Europe and everything seems to be growing really well over there – people are actually singing along to the songs,” he said Things seem to be happening Stateside for Capocci with talks with a US label keen to get the Capocci sound into as many ears as possible, currently on the table.

“Yeah we’re really looking forward to heading over to Vegas – we’ve never been over there before so it should be pretty wild.”
