iven all of the lacklustre reviews that this highly anticipated film received when it hit cinemas, I was expecting this latest outing from the Pirates of the Carribbean pair of director Gore Verbinsky and actor Johnny Depp, to be somewhat of a turkey. How wrong I was.

This is a thoroughly engaging western romp with a refreshing seam of subtle comedy running through it, thanks mostly to a brilliant performance from Depp as the ubiquitous Tonto.

In the 1930s, an elderly Tonto tells a young boy the tale of John Reid, the Lone Ranger (Armie Hammer). He rides with his brother and fellow Texas Rangers in pursuit of the notorious Butch Cavendish. Ambushed by the outlaw and left for dead, he is rescued by Tonto, before becoming a reluctant masked rider pursuing the criminal against all odds.

n this reviewer’s humble opinion, outside of the Kinks’ Ray Davies, Paul Simon is in possession of one of the most nuanced turns of phrase in modern popular music and this retrospective rams that point home, and then some.

This collection charts Simon’s long and eclectic career, from his days with Simon and Garfunkel through to his diverse solo recordings where he dabbled in pop-rock while incorporating many world music influences from reggae and gospel to traditional African rhythms.

It is the first half of this collection that is the real winner, with the Simon and Garfunkel tracks, ‘The Boxer’, and ‘The Only Living Boy in New York’ being standouts. That’s not to say that the solo section is anything less with such classics as ’50 Ways to Leave Your Lover’’, ‘Mother and Child Reunion’, and ‘You Can Call Me Al’ getting an airing.

f it’s not too far past your bedtime, you’d do well to check out this brilliant crime drama from Brian De Palma , and arguably his best directorial outing since ‘The Untouchables’.

Al Pacino gives a bravura performance as Carlito Brigante – a former heroin trafficker and hitman for the Puerto Rican mob who, after being released from jail on a technicality,

ollowing the release of 1998’s ‘In The Aeroplane Over The Sea’ and subsequent support tour, legendary US indie cult band ‘Neutral Milk Hotel’ went on hiatus. Aside from a 2001 live album, a 2002 album of Bulgarian music and a handful of live appearances, Jeff Mangum became indie rock’s resident recluse for over a decade.

The band is noted for its experimental sound, obscure lyrics and eclectic instrumentation. For the first time ever, Neutral Milk Hotel will be performing shows in Australia.

ince first bursting onto the scene as the frontwoman for ‘80s funk-poppers I’m Talking in the early 80s, Kate Ceberano has never been one to shy away from a musical challenge.

Post I’m Talking, the singer has tackled various genres including pop, jazz and soul as well as various forays into theatre (‘Jesus Christ Superstar’) and film (‘Dust Off The Wings’).

Now, almost 30 years since the release of I’m Talking’s first EP, Ceberano’s musical curiosity is still alive and well, as evidenced on her latest long player and first album of new material in more than a decade, ‘Kensal Road’.

‘Kensal Road’ is a refreshingly organic album, that is awash with lush harmonisation and lashings of ukulele, mandolin and guitar that belies her Aussie pop princess tag.

Ceberano will be in town this weekend to give Novocastrians an up close and personal taste of ‘Kensal Road’and she said that that the prospect of visiting regional centres was an enticing one.

“I haven’t really done a full regional tour in so long – being a parent can make things like that difficult, but I’m just so excited to be getting out there with the new album – it’s going to be a great show.”

Ceberano, who recorded the album

in the UK with producer James Bryan (Nelly Furtado, Lisa Marie Presley) said that her latest album could be her most truthful yet and that she was eternally grateful to her label, Sony, for allowing her to spread her creative wings even more.

“Yeah we really wanted to capture a very raw and unaffected vibe on the album which I really hope shines through,” she said.

“I also really wanted to make the most truthful album that I could I mean, there is great power in truth but if there is no one on the other end to hear it, what’s the point? Which is why I am so greatful to everyone at Sony for supporting me in this – they’ve been wonderful.

So, after so many years in the business and with such hits as ‘Bedroom Eyes’, ‘Pash’ and ‘Every Little Thing’ under her belt, what is it about this music lark that keeps Ceberano so passionate?

“For me live performance is everything – it’s almost inexplicable.

I just couldn;t imagine doing anything else,” she said.

“Also I put a lot of it down to good fortune – I mean, I came from what was essentially an avant garde disco band that flew in the face of pretty much everything that was going on at the time and I feel very fortunate that I’m still doing it all these years later.”

t has taken a fair amount of cajoling and more than a decade, but seminal Newcastle hardcore band Found My Direction are back, for two special shows at the Cambridge Hotel this weekend.

TE sat down with founding members Drew Charnock (vocals) and Nigel Delfs (guitar) and the pair said the idea for the reunion came about quite organically.

“We had been asked for years and there was really no interest at the time,” Charnock said.

“Anyway, we had done a ‘Looking Back’ thing for Rest Assured zine that sort of sparked a little bit of interest and people started asking again – the time was right and that was it.”

Forming in Maitland in 1997, Found My Direction quickly rose through the ranks of the burgeoning Newcastle hardcore scene to become one of the most revered bands in the Aussie scene, thanks in no small part to a blistering 7”, ‘Before Their Time’ (regarded in some circles as the best Aussie hardcore release ever) and two full lengths, ‘Burn All White Flags’, and ‘The Path Remains’.

While Delfs and Charnock said they were both looking forward to hitting the stage again, the humble pair said they were unsure as to any influence the band has exerted on the scene.

“I look at FMD now and it’s quite obvious what our influences were so it’s hard to see us as influencing other bands,” Delfs said “If you want to hear the better version of FMD, get ‘Crime Ridden Society’ by One Life Crew’ and you’ll hear the real deal.”

The pair added that, despite the band being away from stages for 12 years, bunters could expect the same level of intensity at the Cambridge as they exerted back in the day.

“I was pretty passionate about it, well we all were, back then, and I’m the type of person that if I’m going to commit so something I’’ll commit to it fuly,” Delfs said.

“No one wants to see a bunch of washed-up has-beens just standing around. I’m going to be going out there giving it all I’ve got,” Charnock added.

With total prizemoney of $6.2m, it is the richest race in the southern hemisphere and attracts the best gallopers from all over the world.

Last years, the Australian-trained Green Moon’s victory broke a recent run of domination by international runners (2011 – Dunaden, 2010 – Americain) – although Green Moon was actually bred in Ireland.

Green Moon and Dunaden with both contest the Cup again this year.

This year’s internationally-trained entries include: Dunaden, Opinion, Ruscello, Red Cadeaux, Mount Athos, Verema, Trevieres, Brown Panther, Dandino, Royal Empire and Simenon.

The race that stops a nation is watched by hundreds of millions of people in 120 countries and the day forms part of the spring carnival along with AAMI Victoria Derby Day (November 2), Crown Oaks Day (November 7) and Emirates Stakes Day (November 9). The Melbourne Cup will be run at 3pm, with live coverage on Channel 7. For those looking to complement Melbourne Cup day with some live racing action, Newcastle Harness Racing Club is conducting a meeting and further afield, the ever-popular Muswellbrook Cup will be conducted.

hen it comes to highenergy live shows, catchy melodies and lush harmonies, Newcastle outfit Sundays Record have it in spades.

The band have been performing around the traps for the past six years and, in that time, have molded themselves into quite the versatile act Sundays Record have a swag of gigs in Newcastle under their collective belt, with many high profile local and touring acts appearing on bills with Kid Courageous, Room 24 and James Reyne. Led by singer and guitarist David Gretton, backed by bassist Ben Travis and drummer Ben Chidgey, the band has formed a strong musical understanding and uniqueness in their sound.

Using techniques such as vocal harmonizing and multi-melodic layering, Sundays Record create an edge in their music that is not found in other bands.

Scuffed up dining setting at establishments that have been trading for less than a month and what looks like a decade’s worth of wax accumulating on brand new candle sticks all work hard to say, “We’ve been doing this for years so you better like our food.”

Every restaurant has its signature dish and Oma’s is the pork knuckle. Boiled, steamed and roasted over three hours this meaty chunk of heaven is served with plenty of creamy mash potato and tangy red cabbage. Cutting through the thick crackle, the meat inside was impossibly tender, flaking away from the bone and cooked to pink perfection.

If you think you’ve got the appetite to devour the pork knuckle, make sure you pre-order when you book.

Although the Germans are known for their sausages, schnitzels and hearty stews, even my vegetarian dining partner found a tasty option on menu – quark patties, served with red cabbage and tossed salad. Made of a smooth curd cheese popular throughout German-speaking countries in Europe, these crispy fried pancakes would satisfy the most committed of carnivores.

We capped off the evening with Bavarian apple cake and quark and cherry cake and very full bellies!

here is little doubt that, when discussing the current crop of mesmerisingly talented Aussie female singer-songwriters, Mia Dyson, Liz Stringer and Jen Cloher, sit pretty close at the top of the tree.

So what would happen if the three joined forces, a’la that wonderful 80s cartoon Captain Planet? Would their individual musical prowess be amplified to the nth degree, giving them the power to right all the wrongs in the world? Well, thankfully you won’’t have to wonder anymore as the trio will be swinging by Newcastle this weekend as part of a highly anticipated national tour.

This year has been a red letter year for all three (who share eleven albums, multiple ARIA awards and Australian Music Prize nominations between them)

with Dyson currently riding high on the back of the international release of her 2012 long player, ‘The Moment’, Stringer fresh from a European tour of her album ‘Warm in the Darkeness’ and Cloher reaping the kudos from her third album ‘In Blood Memory’.

Often “supergroups” are cooked up in record company back rooms by cynical A & R men however Stringer said their collaboration was borne out of mutial respect and long standing friendships.

“It was actually Jen’s idea and it really did make perfect sense to all of us,””she said. “ The three of us already approach our songwriting very differently so it is going to be very interesting to see where we are able to take these songs,” she said.

It’s also cool because I’m not singing all of the time so I get to take a step back and work on my guitar noodlings.”

n their heyday, Sydney-borne electro dance-rock outfit Def FX were one of the most sonically adventurous outfits on the Australian music scene.

Combining such disparate elements as psych, electronica, metal and grunge with one of the most kinetically engaging live shows, thanks in no small part to the pure rock exuberance and swagger of front woman Fiona Horne, even on a mediocre night, they were virtually untouchable.

Now, some 15 years after their untimely break-up and after a highly successful hit-out last year, the band are hitting the road again and Horne told TE that she couldn’t be happier.

Horne said that the idea for the reformation came about quite organically and, while she was unsure, in the first instance, that people would still

remember the band, he qualms were quickly put to rest once they retook the stage in 2012.

“I had lived in the US for 12 years, bouncing back and forward to Australia and Marty [Basha, original bass player] was living on the North Coast,” she said.

“Anyway, a girlfriend of mine came to America to visit and she said “you know, they’re playing Def FX songs on Australian radio again” and she suggested that we should look at doing a tour.

Anyone who saw Def FX in the first go-round would know that Horne was no demure flower when she hit the stage.

“I’ve found that, even now, I can still mosh away with the best of them although back then it was all about cathartic, aggressive performance but now it’s cathartic and joyous – also a great f***ing night.”

f you have accepted the truism that vinyl is far superior, both aurally and stylistically to CDs and innocuous snippets of computerised data, and if the sounds of Motown and soul are your bag, then you’ll be in hog heaven this weekend when the Brand New Bag Motown and Soul Revue hits town.

The brainchild of Newcastle’s own “Grandfather of Soul” Phil Dando and his daughter Caroline, the Brand New Back Motown and Soul Revue will be a celebration of the irrepressible sounds of soul with smatterings of Northern soul, R & B and blues thrown in for good measure.

Dando, an ex-pat Liverpudlian who

was a teenager at the height of the UK soul boom in the late 60s and early 70s said that punters could expect cuts from the likes of Otis Reading and The Four Tops and The Temptations to get an airing alongside some rarer tunes.

“Unfortunately in a lot of cases the songs weren’t major hits at the time and a lot of the acts have since broken up or passed on so the only way you’ll get to hear these songs live is hearing them played on vinyl and some of the stuff that we’ll be playing hasn’t been heard in quite some time, so it’s pretty exciting.”

So just what is it about the lure of soul that has enthralled so many generations?

ith such impossibly catchy and sing-alongable tunes as ‘Cracklin’ Rosie’, ‘Sweet Caroline’ ‘Shiloh’ and ‘Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon’ under his belt, there is little doubt that Neil Diamond knows how to write a song.

While there are no plans for Diamond to visit our fair city, fans are about to be treated to the next big thing when Newcastle-based musician Ty Penshorn brings his ‘Diamond’ tribute show to Wests, Lambton this weekend.

Penshorn who is perhaps best known locally as the frontman of Hornet said it had been some time since he had taken the tribute to the stage and he couldn’t wait.

“Yeah it’s crazy exciting,” he said.

“It has been a while and when I was

doing it before I was a lot younger so it’s probably going to be a bit more convincing this time around.”

Penshorn said the show would run the gamut of Diamond’s formidable catalogue and will be delivered with an unabashed energy of a Vegas-style show, complete with an eight-piece band.

“All of the greatest hits will be there, which is an interesting proposition because he has had so many, plus we’ll be adding around half a dozen other tunes to the show so it will be very full indeed.”

So, just what is it about Diamond’s music that has enthralled Penshorn?

“He is just such a fantastic writer,” he said.

“I mean, just look at a song like ‘Sweet Caroline’ – it’s just such an uplifting tune and almost impossible not to sing along to.”
