t was the day a rugby league match went far beyond the battle for two competition points. Knights back-rower Alex McKinnon’s neck injury united his teammates and the community as a whole at Hunter Stadium on Sunday with the 18,196 crowd standing and applauding as the Newcastle players formed a huddle centre-field with coach Wayne Bennett as part of the ‘Rise For Alex’ tribute. Bennett said the emotion of the day had got to him: “It’s funny, I didn’t expect it to hit me the way it did. I felt the angst when I came to the ground and I didn’t expect it to hit me the way it did, but when I saw the jerseys and the people and the fans wearing their colours, I realised they’ve been in the same pain and hurt that we’ve been in,’’ he said. “I didn’t want to look at too many of them, to be honest with you. It wasn’t good for my eyes. I was starting to get tears, I was, so the fans have been wonderful.’’ McKinnon’s recovery took a positive turn on Sunday evening with the 22-year-old being woken from an induced coma and communicating with his family. He continues to undergo intensive physiotherapy and the hope is that he will soon be able to be transferred to a Sydney hospital. The Knights played with determination from the opening whistle to thrash the Cronulla Sharks 30-0 and record their first victory of the 2014 season.

NRL Head of Club and State Services, Mr Tony Crawford, said the Knights Members Club and the Hunter Sports Group had agreed to

hold off any further action in relation to the club’s ownership while the NRL holds discussions with both parties. “The Members Club has agreed to defer any move to transfer the ownership of the club so commercial discussions can take place,” Mr Crawford said.
