ullying, drug-use and anti-social behaviour have become so prevalent in Hunter schools that plans are afoot to convene experts at a regional summit to address the worsening crisis. Figures released by the Department of Education and Communities last month revealed instances of anti-social behaviour in schools across the Hunter and Central Coast had more than doubled from 111 in 2011 to 288 last year - including 104 reports of assault, 42 drug cases and 26 weapons offences. 20-year-old Lambton resident, Sally Cooper has witnessed the growing problem of violence in Hunter schools first hand and was the target of bullies during her high school years. “There was this thing [at my high school] where if you had a problem with someone, you’d sort it out in the park across from school at 3:12pm, because that’s when school finished,” she said. “Fights became so prevalent that it became almost like a joke. “In 2010, there was a situation where a girl in my year came out as a lesbian and all of her friends followed her home from school and physically attacked her in the park and she ended up with a hairline fracture in her skull and they got suspended from school for 21 days - that’s all they got.
