ullying, drug-use and anti-social behaviour have become so prevalent in Hunter schools that plans are afoot to convene experts at a regional summit to address the worsening crisis.

Figures released by the Department of Education and Communities last month revealed instances of anti-social behaviour in schools across the Hunter and Central Coast had more than doubled from 111 in 2011 to 288 last year - including 104 reports of assault, 42 drug cases and 26 weapons offences.

20-year-old Lambton resident, Sally Cooper has witnessed the growing problem of violence in Hunter schools first hand and was the target of bullies during her high school years.

“There was this thing [at my high school] where if you had a problem with someone, you’d sort it out in the park across from school at 3:12pm, because that’s when school finished,” she said.

“Fights became so prevalent that it became almost like a joke.

“In 2010, there was a situation where a girl in my year came out as a lesbian and all of her friends followed her home from school and physically attacked her in the park and she ended up with a hairline fracture in her skull and they got suspended from school for 21 days - that’s all they got.

The current heightened emotion in Australia surrounding the Islam faith has drawn out some ridiculous statements in recent days.

While driving last week, I tuned the radio into some talkback discussion - which I thought has always been a good way to gauge the public’s views on current affairs.

The first caller I heard declared up-front that he didn’t like Muslims.

When questioned by the program’s host as to why he had formed this opinion, the caller resorted to the tired and ignorant view that Muslim immigrants “come to our country and “don’t want to conform to the Australian way of life”.

He couldn’t actually define exactly what the Australian way of life involves, but presumably he way referring to things like the type of foods Australians eat, the clothes we wear and the holidays we observe.

My view is that immigrants should not have to give up their beliefs and customs.

Of course, they need to be aware of and obey Australian laws which may be significantly different to those they are used to, but the vast majority have no problem understanding that requirement and simply want to enjoying their life in peace.

This same caller then went on to relay a story in which his grandchildren were “terrified” after

seeing two Muslim women walking down the main street in a country town wearing burkas.

I understood his point that the children had not seen a Muslim person wearing this clothing before but I think they were probably more confused rather than terrified.

The next caller, thankfully far more reasonable and sensible, was a butcher who told of some customers who didn’t like buying halal meat because they “don’t like the taste”.

He said he points out to them, with exasperation, that halal meat does not taste any different to non-halal meat and that the process refers to the way is the animal is killed and the way it is prepared.

I’m the first to admit that I don’t understand a great deal about Islam and the differences to Christianity.

But making sweeping statements like those mentioned above just make us look like ignorant fools to the rest of the world.

Then we have numerous reports of morons harassing innocent Muslims in public. These idiots seem to think they are some sort of moral crusaders defending the country.

Unfortunately these isolated incidents are probably going to keep happening from time to time as the battle with ISIS heats up overseas.

But that has absolutely nothing to do with the decent, peaceful Muslims living in Australia.

reens candidate for Newcastle, Michael Osborne, has called on NSW Opposition Leader, John Robertson to pay attention to the science and extend the Labor Party’s election promise to ban coal seam gas (CSG) activity from the Northern Rivers district across the state.

Last week, Mr Robertson visited Lismore on the state’s Far North Coast and announced that if Labor won Government in March, six local government areas across the “pristine environment” of the Northern Rivers would be CSG-free.

Speaking to the Post at Fullerton Cove, where in 2012, local residents staged a blockade stopping gas company, Dart Energy from entering an exploration site on Fullerton Cove Road, Mr Osborne said Labor’s move to ban CSG from the Northern Rivers was purely political.

“I think it’s purely a political stunt,” he said.

“If they have come to recognise the risk [CSG] presents on the North Coast, why is it any different in the Hunter?

“Right here, [at Fullerton Cove], we’re close to aquifers that are connected to the Tomago sandbeds, so our water supply, or 20 to 30 per cent for Newcastle, but also the

“Up in the Hunter, you have some of the higher numbers and you’ve certainly seen some of the highest increases over the past three years,” he said. “It’s very easy to sit there and say that it’s all too hard and teachers should just get on with the job of teaching, but anyone who’s got a passionate interest in education and anyone who’s got an interest in the welfare of young people cannot sit by and say that all of the answers should come from teachers.

“Governments have a role to play. As Education Minister in a Labor Government, I will have no hesitation in calling in the Director General of the Department in week one and instructing them to make solving this matter a priority.”

Mr Park said governments needed to fund more school counsellors.

ndependent candidate for the seat of Newcastle, Jacqueline Haines has highlighted the Hunter’s youth as a key focus of her campaign for the October 25 by-election and the state election in March.

Ms Haines last week released her Youth Empowerment policy with the main point calling for an expansion of Newcastle’s industry base to create more jobs.

“I believe we need to be diversifying our local economy,” Ms Haines said.

“My sons are aged 14 and 12 are moving into the stage of life where they are going to be entering training. Newcastle is great for training. We have the ability to turn out very professional people whether it be through university or TAFE,” she said.

“But at the other end where are they going to go and what are they going to do?

“I’d loved them to fly the coop, travel and see the world but I’d also love them to have the opportunity to come back.

“In a way we are a bit of a dorm for Sydney. We produce all these people who are quite productive in life and very educated but we’re not providing the employment here for them to stay.”

Ms Haines moved to the Hunter from Tasmania in 1991 and has worked in

“If the Government really wanted to be able to say they were doing something, they would make the light rail triangular so it linked up different services from the hospitals through to the providers in town.”

Interchange gathers speed State Labor commits $39 million to Lake Macquarie Transport Interchage @amelia_parrott

The announcement comes off the back of recent news that Labor would pump $750 million into Hunter-based infrastructure projects if successful at the March election, by scrapping the Baird Government’s plans to truncate the heavy rail line into the centre of Newcastle.

the commitment of extra funds would bring direct benefits to local businesses and motorists.

“Labor’s funding commitment for the Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange means that local businesses, residents and motorists will benefit from the construction of all the roads attached to this project,” she said.

tate Labor has promised to keep the Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange project on track, committing $39 million to finish Stage 1 of the major infrastructure project.

Visiting Glendale last week, Opposition Leader, John Robertson said Labor’s commitment would see the construction of all associated road links completed, including the new Pennant Street Bridge, linking Glendale and Cardiff, and the extension of Glendale Drive and Stockland Drive.

“The Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange at Glendale has been on the top of the list of much-needed projects for the region and Labor will get it built,” he said.

“Today we end the uncertainty about when the first stage of the Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange will be completed - Labor will provide the remaining funds needed to get on with building the Pennant Street Bridge providing a new direct link between Cardiff and Glendale.”

The $39 million commitment will also cover planning works associated with Stage 2 of the project, including a new train station and interchange to be built behind Stockland Glendale.

“Lake Macquarie Council has been developing this major infrastructure project for many years - with this funding we will see the road connections open to traffic and providing real benefits to our community.”

The project is expected to create 549 direct jobs and support upwards of 7,000 additional jobs across the region over the next 17 years.

The project is expected to inject $300 million into the local economy.

Independent candidate for Newcastle, Karen Howard said $39 million in additional was a great announcement from Labor in theory, but added that it may confuse voters in the upcoming Charlestown and Newcastle by-elections.

“Extra money for the interchange is an easy promise to make in relation to next March’s state election but all it really does is confuse voters preparing for the October 25 by-election,” she said.

“Labor voted against the lease of the port, denied Newcastle the opportunity of a container terminal and it now appears it wants to dilute the funding allocated to the Newcastle electorate.”

Ms Howard said the NSW Labor Party needed to come clean on how it intended to spend the $750 million generated from the lease of the Port of Newcastle.

Council will discuss lowering entry fees to Beresfield Swimming Centre

early 200 pool users have had their say on a plan to lower entry fees at Beresfield Swimming Centre.

The plan would see the single entry fee at the pool slashed by more than 40 per cent from $5 to $2.80, as part of a new pricing structure to be voted on at Newcastle City Council’s next ordinary meeting later this month.

Under the new fee structure, families would be able to swim all day at the pool for less than $10, adults supervising children from the water’s edge would be able to enter the centre for free, saving

$3, and pensioners would pay just $2.20.

A Council spokesperson told the Post that 17 individual submissions and 169 form-letter signatures had been received during a month-long public exhibition period, which ended last Monday.

Councillor Nuatali Nelmes, who tabled the proposed fee changes to Council last month, with the support of her fellow Labor councillors, said affordability was the greatest issue affecting usage of the pool in the community.

“This is the biggest win on pool entry fees in many years,” she said. “After long battles to save Beresfield pool this will reduce entry fees by more than 40 per cent but bring more people to the pool.”

Council will decide whether to approve the changes on Tuesday, October 28.

This October, Lake Macquarie City Council is holding a world-first community event, The Life Cycle, to help change the way people see cyclists.

The event ties in closely with Council’s Cycling Strategy 2021, which supports greater levels of cycling participation across Lake Macquarie.

The Cycling Strategy seeks to create an environment that both motivates and enables cycling through the provision of a connected, safe and legible bicycle network.

Additionally, the Cycling Strategy aims to raise awareness among drivers that cyclists are legitimate road users, and to foster social approval for cycling and people who cycle among the Lake Macquarie community.

There is a strong case for investing in cycling, including environmental benefits, health benefits, lower operating costs in comparison to driving a vehicle and savings to the broader community through less and better-moving road-based traffic. I believe that there needs to be greater safety among all road users. Many cyclists in Lake Macquarie would agree that there are varying attitudes to road rules among motorists and cyclists.

The Life Cycle encourages people to think differently, and to see the person not the bike.

I encourage community members to join us for a bike ride along the Lake Macquarie foreshore as a part of the event on Saturday 18 October. Bring along your bike with a light, helmet and the desire to change the way we see cyclists.

ith 1100 admissions to the John Hunter Children’s Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) annually, the staff and patients need all the help they can get.

Looking after these babies will now be a little easier, with the donation of a $37,000 brain monitor set to aid in diagnosing and observing the smallest patients.

The monitor, donated through a partnership between Woolworths supermarkets and Variety - the Children’s Charity, allows doctors to watch brain activity for seizures in children as light as 500 grams, where they may not otherwise be noticed.

“A baby can be fitting and one little finger might twitch,” NICU Acting Director, Dr Paul Craven said.

“Babies fit for lots of different reasons but we can’t often tell why, we just have to do the very best we can to pick up all those subtle signs.

“We can’t do it without these pieces of equipment.”

The machine works by inserting small needles into the skin over the skull, which previously could not be done on the smallest babies.

“The three are always interrelated, so having this on a baby’s head allows us to see what is happening inside the skull and that is really essential.”

Dr Craven said that the demand for the monitors in the NICU was sometimes so high that babies could only wear them for six hours before they had to be moved on.

This is the third monitor the NICU has received.

World Sight Day, on October 9, aims to focus global attention on vision impairment with this year’s theme Universal Eye Health, part of the call to action of no more avoidable blindness.

It is estimated that close to one million Australians over the age of 40 will be vision impaired, and 100,000 blind, by 2020 if action is not taken.

Optometrist Dom Willson, owner of Marketown Optical in Newcastle West, said he frequently saw clients with

macular degeneration, a condition which causes progressive, painless loss of central vision.

“Many people don’t realise that the food they eat can affect the health of their eyes,” Mr Willson said.

“In simple terms, if a particular food is good for your heart, then it’s good for your eyes.

“That means eating foods like green, leafy vegetables and nuts and trying to avoid saturated fats.”

Mr Willson said keeping direct sunlight away from the eyes can also make a significant difference to eye health.

Important to care for the carers

People living with type 2 diabetes often wonder if they are able to exercise normally. The short answer is yes. Exercise makes your insulin work better which helps your body clear any excess sugar from your blood. In other words, exercise lowers your blood sugar level.

Aiming for a healthy body weight is one of the most important actions you can take to manage type 2 diabetes. In combination with a healthy diet, exercise plays a huge role in achieving weight loss.

Also, exercise can lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels and therefore the risk of heart disease and diabetes complications. There are also many other benefits of exercise such as improved mood, sleep and energy levels. Exercise will strengthen your bones and can reduce stress and tension in your life.

If you have type 2 diabetes, speak with your doctor before commencing any new exercise regime. It is important to get advice about managing your blood sugar levels while exercising and to check if you have any diabetes-related health concerns that may be affected by certain types of exercise.

How much exercise is enough? This will depend on how much exercise you are used to, the type of exercise you plan to do and whether you are trying to lose weight or not. Generally speaking, you should have a light sweat but if you are gasping for breath and unable to talk you are probably working too hard. A good final goal is for a 30-minute brisk walk each day.

If you are starting from nothing, gradually build up to that over a few months. Every little bit counts.

Start with a five-minute walk three times a week, then gradually build it up by five-minute intervals a week at a time.

You’ll be at a 30-minute walk within six weeks. Then gradually add an extra walk each week until you are walking most days of the week.

If you don’t like walking, try swimming, dancing, cycling, a gym class, or use some form of exercise equipment at the gym or at home. Any exercise is better than nothing!

It is estimated that there are approximately 2.7 million carers in Australia, providing care and support to family members or friends who have a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness, drug or alcohol issue or who are frail and elderly.

Carers provide an invaluable service through physical help with daily living tasks (like showering, dressing, feeding and transporting), emotional support, social support and financial support, assisting someone manage their illness and medications, organizing and attending appointments and helping their loved one live as independently as possible at home.

However, caring for someone can be an extremely demanding job, both physically and emotionally, but especially so if the person being cared for requires full-time assistance and the carer is an elderly spouse.

It is so important for the health and emotional needs of carers to be recognised and supported as well. There are many carer support groups available which can bridge the social isolation that can occur when caring for someone full-time.

If you are a carer, take the opportunity to start a conversation with family, friends or your family doctor about how you are coping and what you may need help with now and into the future.

You may find help comes from those around you, like family, friends and neighbours, but your family doctor can also arrange for you to access support from a psychologist, counsellor or social worker, and help you link in with support services that can offer assistance, such as nursing services, home care, social support and respite care.

It is important to recognise your own needs and acknowledge that it is okay to feel tired, frustrated, angry or sad and understand that you don’t have to manage on your own.

It is completely normal for carers to experience all of these emotions as the needs of their loved one change or grow.

Understand your feelings and try to identify what is triggering them so that you can seek assistance in those areas. Try to stay connected with social supports and involved in activities you participated in before. But most importantly, find time to talk.

The Caves Beach couple celebrated their diamond anniversary at Swansea RSL on Saturday, proving that sometimes, for the South African merchant seaman, all it takes is a simple letter.

“We were going from Singapore to Borneo to load logs, to Brisbane with the logs and Sydney with logs, then down to Geelong and across to Bunbury, so we thought that if we wrote to a girl in each one of these places, by the time we got there we would be conversing,” Mr Campbell said.

“So I wrote to Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth.”

He received a response from a woman in Sydney. That woman was Colleen Baker of Lakemba.

Four years of picture dates, presents and long-distance letter-writing later, they became Mr and Mrs Campbell on October 4, 1954.

Jets primed for opener

ewcastle Jets assistant coach Clayton Zane says the Jets are progressing well ahead of their round 1 derby clash against the Central Coast Mariners on Saturday afternoon.

Zane believes there were a number of positive signs to come out of the Jets’ final competitive pre-season hit-out against the Young Socceroos recently which the Jets won 2-1.

“The first 45 minutes in particular we really had control of the game and to date it’s been the best hit out of our preseason,” Zane said.

“It gave us a chance to look at some of the players who maybe haven’t had a lot of match minutes like Marcos Flores.

“We had control for the whole match, had a 2-0 lead until the last minute when we conceded a sloppy goal at the end.

“We need to make sure that doesn’t happen once the A-League season starts, but it was a good performance heading into the first game against the Mariners.”

Zane said the Jets had maintained a high level of intensity at training before easing off ahead of the opening game to ensure the players are fresh for the derby.

“It’s a balance, because the workload still needs to remain relatively high,” Zane explained.

“The week before the match is a taper

The Jets’ season begins on Saturday and probably more about reinforcing tactics.”

Jets head coach Phil Stubbins said he is confident his side will be ready for the Mariners’ intensity. “We’ve transitioned and we’ve had a lot of change at the club this pre-season, but I’m certainly confident that come the start of the campaign and moving forward we’ll get better and better,” he said. “Seeing our training pitch in the condition it is in allows us to work in a way that we haven’t been able to in the past.

“The quality of the surface is pristine at the moment and that will only service the needs of the team moving forward.”

ormer world surfing champion and AFC Asian Cup ambassador, Mark Richards was on hand at Nobbys Beach last week to mark the “100 Days To Go” milestone for the tournament beginning on January 9.

Hunter Stadium will host four matches, beginning with Japan playing Palestine on January 12.

Richards told the Post he was honoured to have been asked to help promote his home region on an international scale.

“I’m really excited about it. It’s a great honour for Newcastle to be hosting an event like the Asian Cup,” he said.

“I think we should be stoked to think that Newcastle was included as part of a tournament of worldwide significance.

“Events like this that showcase Newcastle to the world are really important.”

Mark Stratford, Host City Manager, Newcastle for the Asian Cup said organisers had been pleased with ticket sales to date.

“The message to Novocastrians is to buy your tickets now - don’t wait until the last minute,”

Stratford said. “It’s the first time an event of this magnitude has been in our own backyard.

“Even if you’re not really a football fan, you still should be looking at being part of the whole spectacle.”

The 16 nations to qualify for the tournament are Australia as hosts, defending champions Japan, Korea Republic, DPR Korea, Bahrain, China, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan and Palestine.

Following, Japan’s clash with Palestine, Newcastle will also play host to Oman v Kuwait on January 17, the second semi-final on January 27 and the third v fourth playoff on January 30.

Australia’s first match will be against Kuwait at AAMI Park in Melbourne on January tickets.

The Asian Cup final will be held at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium on January 31.

Tickets can be purchased for individual matches in Newcastle or as a Venue Pack covering all four matches at Hunter Stadium.
