The face of BHP, Aubrey Brooks honoured with NSW Government award • MELISSAH COMBER

OU could say that Aubrey Brooks was born with steel in his blood. The face of the former BHP Steelworks, Mr Brooks, was last week awarded the 2014 NSW Government Heritage Volunteer of the Year for the tours he conducts of Muster Point, an eight-metre high sculpture that immortalises the spirit of the steelworks. With a combined 127 years of service to BHP in three generations of his family, Mr Brooks wasn't going to let the legacy die when the steelworks did. "This award is not for me, it's for the men and women of steel," Mr Brooks said. "I just want to help keep the memory of those men and women of steel alive." During his 38 years at the steelworks, Mr Brooks worked his way up to Operations Supervisor from rivet cook and shortly after it closed in 1999, started conducting the tours. "It was a place where people who couldn't read or write could get a job," Mr Brooks said. "If you wanted to put in the effort, you could get all the training you wanted. "Those people built this city." In presenting the award, Member for Newcastle, Tim Owen said that he couldn't think of anyone more deserving of recognition. "He's a great credit to NSW and a great credit to Newcastle," he said.
