"I bad no knowledge" Newcastle MP, Tim Owen will not contest his seat in light of ICAC revelations • AMELIA PARROTT }I @amelia_parrott

he axe finally came down on the political career of Tim Owen on Monday, with the Newcastle MP announcing he would not contest his seat at next year's state election, amidst admissions that it was "highly likely" prohibited donors contributed to his 2011 election campaign. Speaking publicly for the first time since emails tendered to the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) alleged he had received "under the table" donations from property developer, Nathan Tinkler, an emotional Mr Owen said he was "shocked and dismayed" by the revelations that had surfaced over recent weeks. "Public admissions that have been made at ICAC regarding the Newcastle 2011 state election campaign have made me feel undermined and very sad," he said. "I want to say this very clearly to the people of Newcastle, I had no knowledge whatsoever of any funding irregularities in my campaign, however, it appears highly likely that prohibited donors did contribute in some way to my election campaign." Mr Owen said it was these allegations and recurring health issues that influenced his decision not to contest his seat. He refused to answer questions from the media after his much-anticipated press conference on Monday afternoon and said he would not be commenting any further on the matter. Mr Tinkler is due to front ICAC on Thursday.
