The s tate - first op eration, c onducted l ast Wednesday, involved officers from the Newcastle City L ocal A rea C ommand a nd t he S tate C rime Command’s Sex Crimes Squad collaborating with Corrective S ervices NS W p ersonnel t o mon itor compliance by registered child-sex offenders with their legal obligations. A focus of the operation was reviewing computers and electronic devices belonging to offenders. A 57-year-old man, arrested during the operation, faced court on Thursday, charged with producing, disseminating or possessing child abuse material and using a carriage service to access child abuse material, along with drug offences. In total, the operation detected 18 breaches of the Child Protection (Offender Reporting) Act. Newcastle Ci ty Lo cal A rea c ommander, S uperintendent J ohn Gr alton, s aid t he op eration w as being hailed as a s uccess and anticipated similar collaborative op erations w ould b e c arried ou t i n Newcastle again in the future. “It’s a f antastic t hing t o s ee t wo g overnment agencies coming together for the first time for the protection of our children,� he said. “Any breach of the Child Protection Act is a serious offence in my mind.�
