The s tate - first op eration, c onducted l ast Wednesday, involved officers from the Newcastle City L ocal A rea C ommand a nd t he S tate C rime Command’s Sex Crimes Squad collaborating with Corrective S ervices NS W p ersonnel t o mon itor compliance by registered child-sex offenders with their legal obligations.

A focus of the operation was reviewing computers and electronic devices belonging to offenders.

A 57-year-old man, arrested during the operation, faced court on Thursday, charged with producing, disseminating or possessing child abuse material and using a carriage service to access child abuse material, along with drug offences.

In total, the operation detected 18 breaches of the Child Protection (Offender Reporting) Act. Newcastle Ci ty Lo cal A rea c ommander, S uperintendent J ohn Gr alton, s aid t he op eration w as being hailed as a s uccess and anticipated similar collaborative op erations w ould b e c arried ou t i n Newcastle again in the future. “It’s a f antastic t hing t o s ee t wo g overnment agencies coming together for the first time for the protection of our children,� he said. “Any breach of the Child Protection Act is a serious offence in my mind.�

I’m a lo ng wa y o ff r etiring b ut t he t hought o f having to work until I’m 7 0 doesn’t exactly thrill me.

Treasurer Joe Hockey has strongly hinted that the p ension a ge w ill r ise t o 7 0 whe n he h ands down the Federal Budget in May. Upon reading or hearing that, I’m s ure many people will react angrily. If you’re in your 40s or 50s and already looking f or t he f inishing l ine, t hen mo ving t he goalposts f urther a way w ill b e a depre ssing thought.

I’m sure there are also many who react by saying that they plan to be well and truly retired by way of their own wealth, by the time they are 70 and won’t care what the pension age is. Of course, the government would love everyone to be thinking that way to ease the financial burden.

But as I listened to Mr Hockey’s explanation as t o wh y t his m ay ne ed t o h appen, I b egan t o accept that this is a decision governments will be forced i nto. Perhaps t he c urrent Liberal government could afford to hold off for a few years and pass the unpopular decision into the future.

Mr Hockey was right when he said this generation of workers will need to work longer because an aging population w ill put u navoidable stress on t he bu dget. E ven w ith on ly a b asic u nderstanding of economics, it’s clear to see that more people on t he pension means less people in t he workforce paying income tax. And, of course,

more money needs to be allocated for the health needs of those who have retired.

Rising t he p ension a ge i s not a new i dea. I n 2009, L abor de cided t hat t he p ension a ge w ill rise from 65 to 67 between 2017 and 2023.

For the Liberal party, now would be a good time to make the decision, given that this is the first budget of t heir term. It’s simple politics - get t he unpopular, but necessary stuff out of the way as early a s you c an a nd w ith a s l ittle ne gativity a s possible. T hen y ou’ve g ot a c ouple of y ears f or voters to forget about what you’ve done.

One t hing t he g overnment m ust ac cept criticism for is the fact that Prime Minister Tony Abbott m ade a pre - election prom ise t hat t here would be no change to the pension. While we all know that politicians will say virtually anything to get themselves elected, it leaves a really bad taste i n t he mouths of v oters t o s ee a c omplete 180-degree turn on such an important issue.

Well done t o the Knights for quickly returning t o t he w inner’s c ircle a fter a d isappointing loss t o Nor th Q ueensland. W hile t he R aiders haven’t been i n top form t his year, it’s a lways a tough trip down to Canberra playing in front of a very parochial crowd.

Autopsy proves inconclusive

post mortem has failed to conclusively d etermine t he cause of de ath of a C essnock toddler.

Ambulance paramedics and police were called to a home in Cumberland Street in the e arly hou rs of W ednesday mor ning where they found a 19-month-old boy in a serious condition.

According t o p olice, t he b oy's p arents were a t home a t t he t ime a nd h ad b een performing CPR. He w as t ransported by a mbulance t o Cessnock Hospital but later died.

Central H unter c rime m anager, D etective I nspector J ohn Z drilic p reliminary autopsy r esults c onfirmed p neumonia and c ardiomyopathy we re c ontributing factors to the death of the boy, but showed no conclusive cause of death.

On W ednesday a fternoon, C entral Hunter S uperintendent G arry O 'Dell s aid that p olice b elieved t he de ath w as not natural and the boy's parents were assisting police with their inquiries.

Detective Inspector Zdrilic said the police were c ontinuing their investigations into the i ncident i n l ight of t he i nconclusive autopsy result.

"The death of a 19-month-old is tragic in anyone's language," he said.

"That's wh y w e a re c ontinuing ou r investigations, not ju st for the sake of t he parents, but for everyone."

The boy's parents, who a re aged in their late 20s, are said to be traumatised by the death.

The boy was the couple's only child.

s internet-users across the country access more data at increasingly h igh sp eeds, New castle’s infrastructure c ontinues t o l ag behind, with construction of the National Broadband Network in Mayfield at a stand still.

According t o t he l atest d ata f rom t he Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), Australians d ownloaded 86 1,000 t erabytes of d ata i n t he t hree mon ths t o t he end of December 2013, an increase of a third compared to the previous June quarter. A BS a ssistant d irector of i nnovation and t echnology, L esley M artin s aid th e vast majority of this data was downloaded via a fixed-line broadband connection.

“Of t his total, f ixed-line broadband was used for 96 per cent of downloads, which confirms r ecent t rends t hat su bscribers are u sing f ixed- line i nternet c onnections to d ownload th e m ajority o f th eir d ata,” she s aid i n a st atement. L ast w eek, N BN Co. was instructed by the Federal Government to ado pt a n “ optimised mu ltitechnology mix” model in its rollout of the National Broadband Network.

Member for Newcastle, Sharon Claydon said t he “second rate hotc hpotch mo del” would only ensure a d igital divide among users. “ My g reat c oncern i s whe n y ou go down the path of delivering different broadband t echnologies w ith dif fering speed a nd do wnload c apacity, y ou s et some people up with a better deal than others,” she s aid. “ For me t here i s de finitely an issue of equity.”

The G overnment s ays it s mu lti- technology mo del w ould de liver do wnload speeds of at least 25 megabits per second to a ll pre mises a nd a t le ast 50 me gabits per s econd t o 9 0 p er c ent of f ixed l ine premises. Ms Claydon said most residents and businesses in Newcastle were already accessing download speeds of 25 megabits per second. “Mayfield is no longer on a ny rollout maps,” she said.

“I’ve m ade doz ens of r epresentations [Communications M inister] M alcolm Turnbull and he brings no joy to residents in Mayfield or Newcastle generally.

“This ABS data should be a real wake up call to the Government that people have grabbed this technology with two hands.

“The s ooner w e bu ild a n ational i nfrastructure t hat’s g oing t o k eep u p w ith demand and give everyone access to high speed bro adband t hat w ill de liver on future needs, the better.”

On Sunday night, two men, armed with a h andgun a nd a m achete, e ntered t he Shortland Hote l o n S andgate Ro ad a nd demanded cash from a 20-year-old female employee. T he woman c omplied a nd t he pair f led the scene northbound in a d arkcoloured sedan.

Early on Wednesday morning, a p erson, armed w ith a f irearm, e ntered t he e astbound S hell s ervice s tation on T homas Street a t W allsend, a sked f or a p acket of cigarettes b efore p ointing t he f irearm a t an attendant and demanding money.

The p erson f led t he pre mises on f oot along T homas S treet w ith c ash a nd cigarettes. M s H ornery de scribed t he incidences, w hich o ccurred w ithin thr ee days of each other, as "appalling".

"This w ave of a rmed rob beries i sn't t he fault of police officers," she said.

"Our police do the best they can with very

limited re sources, bu t t hey ne ed more .

This is why the response to my petition for a p olice station to be built in Wallsend was so overwhelming, with well over the ten t housand s ignatures re quired f or t he petition to be debated in Parliament."

Despite t he l atest c rime statistics showing rob beries w ith a f irearm a re s table statewide, M s Hornery s aid t hose f igures had not b een re flected i n he r e lectorate last week.

"I t hink t he B ureau of C rime S tatistics lags behind a bit, this latest report was from last year," she said.

"We've had a number of armed robberies occurring w ithin 1 0 k ilometres o f e ach other a nd t hat do esn't re flect on wh at the B ureau of C rime S tatistics h as f ound overall."

Two s ervice s tations i n M ayfield w ere also targeted on Wednesday night.

At 12:20am, just 10 minutes before the holdup a t W allsend, a p erson d riving a blue H olden C ommodore a llegedly s tole petrol from a service station on the Industrial Highway at Mayfield.

Later, at around 1am, a person entered a s ervice s tation on M aitland Ro ad a nd, after s electing t hree ic e c reams a nd requesting t wo p ackets of c igarettes, allegedly pointed a firearm at an attendant and demanded money.

Wallsend MP, Sonia Hornery outside the service station at Wallsend that was held-up last week.

The a ttendant qu estioned t he of fender, who then fled on foot with the ice creams and ci garettes in a n e asterly dir ection along Maitland Road.

Funded t hrough a $2 50,000 g rant f rom the E nvironmental P rotection Au thority, the centre w ill accept problematic w aste, such as p aint, u sed m otor a nd c ooking oils, ba tteries, f ire ex tinguishers, s moke detectors, e-waste, as well as surplus mixed dry recyclables.

Opening the facility last Thursday, NSW Minister f or t he E nvironment, Roby n Parker said Lake Macquarie residents would no w b e a ble t o f reely d ispose of waste that cannot be collected in kerbside bins, without having to wait for an annual Household Chemical CleanOut event.

“They didn’t use the T.I.C.K.S guidelines and were vague on the details,” Ms Hardy said.

“It’s a n atural i nstinct [ for t he b aby] t o want to be close to you, so I think safe babywearing i s e ncompassed t hrough natural instincts.”

Ms B atterham s aid th at b abywearing is not on ly c onvenient, bu t h as ph ysical, emotional and developmental benefits, so long as it is done well.

"At the end of t he day we are a re source for t he c ommunity t o i mprove t he qu ality of he althcare i n t he l ocal c ommunity where people live and also keep people out of hospital. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In order to do that we need to have a good handle on where the need is."

Ms Bennett said engaging with consumers h as proven to b e a b arrier i n t he p ast as many people do not understand the role H unter M edicare Lo cal p lays in t he community.

"Some of t he tasks we do a re not easy to describe," she said.

"We a re a f acilitator a nd a l inkage point for all the things that create better health in primary healthcare."

Hunter Medicare Local is a not-for-profit health care organisation that aims to improve the health of the Hunter community by i dentifying a nd a ssessing he alth care ne eds, add ressing s ervice g aps, improving th e c o- ordination o f s ervices, making it easier for individual, carers and service pro viders t o n avigate t heir l ocal health system and supporting providers to improve t he quality of c are t hat t hey can provide.

Edgeworth man charged with firearm offences.

An Edgeworth man has been charged with drug and firearm offences, following police investigations into a break and enter at a Singleton jewellery store. About midday last Wednesday, police attended a house in Edgeworth after receiving information about a man allegedly attempting to sell items of jewellery online. During a search of the premises, police allegedly located two sawn-off shotguns, ammunition, a balaclava, gloves, a stolen watch and amounts of methylamphetamine (ice) and cannabis. A 29-year-old man was arrested and taken to Toronto Police Station where he was charged with receive/dispose stolen property, goods in custody, possess shortened firearm, not keep firearm safely, possess ammunition and possess prohibited drug. He appeared in Toronto Local Court the following day.

Service station hold-ups Police are appealing for information after separate armed robberies of service station in Wallsend and Mayfield last week.

About 12:20am on Wednesday morning, a person drove a blue Holden Commodore sedan to a service station on the Industrial Highway at Mayfield and refilled their fuel tank.

When the person was unsuccessful in paying via the pay wave system, they allegedly sped away from the station. Ten minutes later, at about 12:30pm, a person entered a service station on Thomas Street, Wallsend and asked for a packet of cigarettes. The person allegedly pointed a firearm at the attendant and demanded money. The attendant complied and the person fled the station with cash and cigarettes. The offender was last seen walking

along Thomas Street. In a third incident, about 1am, a person entered a service station on Maitland Road, Mayfield and approached the attendant after selecting three ice creams.

The person requested two packets of cigarettes before allegedly producing a handgun and demanding money. The attendant questioned the offender, who then fled on foot with the ice creams and cigarettes, but no cash. The offender was last seen walking in an easterly direction on Maitland Road.

Police believe the incidents are linked and are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Duo charged over break-ins Two men have been charged over a string of firearm and break and enter offences committed in the Newcastle and the Hunter regions this month. Throughout April, police attended a number of break and enter incidents in Waratah, Maitland and Singleton during which jewellery, cigarettes and other property were stolen. Following inquiries, officers attended a hotel on Station Street, Waratah last Wednesday afternoon and arrested two men. The men, aged 18 and 24, were taken to Waratah Police Station and charged. The 18-year-old from Woodberry was charged with five counts of first instances warrants, three counts of goods in custody, possess housebreaking implements wand possess firearm. Police also located a BB gun in the style of a replica pistol allegedly in possession of the 18-year-old. The 24-year-old from Singleton was charged with domestic violent (DV) assault, DV intimidation, breach AVO, possess prohibited drug and breach of bail. Both men and appeared in Newcastle Local Court on Thursday.

Achieve a healthier you with smart goals

Pyelonephritis is a type of bac terial urinar y trac t infection (UTI) that affects one or both kidneys. I t c an be serious because of the important function of the kidneys.

The urinary tract is the body’s drainage system for removing wastes and excess water. It includes two kidneys, two ureters, a bladder and a urethra.

The kidneys are loc ated near the mid dle of the back, just below the rib cage, one on each side of the spine. Urine f lows from the kidneys to the blad der through tubes c alled the ureters. The blad der stores urine until releasin g i t through urination. When the blad der empties, urine f lows out of the body through a tube c alled the urethra a t the bot tom of the bladder.

Bacteria c an move to the kidneys f rom the blad der or c an be c arried through the bloodstream. If p yelonephritis isn ’t treated straight away it can result in sepsis. A UTI in the bladder that does not move to the kidneys is called cystitis.

People most at risk for p yelonephritis are those who ha ve a UTI and those w ith a str uctural, or ana tomic problem in the urinary tract. Urine normally flows only in one direction, from the kidneys to the bladder. However, the flow of urine may be blocked in people with a structural defect of the urinary tract, a kidney stone, or an enlar ged prostate. Urine c an also back up, or reflux, into one or both kidneys.

Most people w ith p yelonephritis do not ha ve complic ations if appropria tely trea ted w ith an tibiotics. O ccasionally, pyelonephritis ma y c ause kidney sc arring, which c an lead to chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure and kidney failure.

However, these problems usually occ ur in people w ith a structural problem in the urinar y trac t, kidney disease, or repeated episodes of pyelonephritis.

Symptoms ran ge f rom mil d to sev ere, but include fev er, chills or sw eats, abdominal or back pain, loss of appeti te, nausea or v omiting, and dysuria ( which is pain discomfort when you urinate or having a frequent urge to urinate).

Many people set goals with renewed motivation at the start of the year only to find that as the year moves on it becomes harder and harder to keep the motivation going and stick to the plan.

Whether the ultimate goal is to lose weight, stop smoking, or be more active, it has to be REALISTIC, RELEV ANT and A CHIEVEABLE. It’s okay to set big g oals for yourself, but at the same time y ou need to be smart about ho w you are g oing to achiev e that goal and how long you may need.

Here are some tips to help y ou achiev e y our g oals for bet ter health this year: 1. Identify what your ultimate goal is then dec ide on the small steps y ou need to achiev e alon g the wa y ( weekly or mon thly goals) in order to reach your final goal.

Your goals need to be v ery spec ific to Y OU, so i t is importan t that you understand what your current habits are.

2. B e flexible w ith your goals - tailor y our short-term goals to suit your changing circumstances - there w ill be times when life gets in the way - little set backs are okay and adjusting your goals to suit a changed situation is also okay.

3. Monitor and review your progress regularly.

A great way to do this is to keep a diary of your progress.

4. Find yourself a support person to talk to about your progress and to help keep you on track.

Your support person coul d be a g ood friend, a family member, your family GP or nurse, or ev en someone f rom an or ganised program, like the team at Get Healthy (which is a free NSW government program offerin g phone adv ice and support to people wanting to improve their health - see w ww.gethealthynsw.com. au for full details).

Getting health y is about makin g lifestyle chan ges tha t last.

Making small and realistic changes over time will get you to your ultimate goal.

Hunter Water recently announced that, from July, a series of Water Wise Rules will be introduced to help reduce water wastage in the Lower Hunter. While the Hunter has avoided the worst of the recent droughts, our water supply is not immune to overuse. In recent times, Chichester Dam levels have fallen to almost half its full capacity and the overall w ater supply h as fallen f rom its t raditionally high levels.

The W ater W ise Ru les f orm p art of t he L ower H unter Water Plan. These common-sense water saving strategies highlight t he e ase w ith wh ich w ater a nd ot her n atural resources can be maximised so we get the most out of this precious resource. The Water Wise Rules include three key rules: hoses must be fitted with a trigger nozzle, sprinklers can only be used before 10am or after 4pm, driveways and other hard services must be swept, not hosed.

The W ater W ise Ru les f ocus on ou tdoor w ater u se, and build on t he great work many families already do t o reduce their water use indoors.

Sydney a nd t he C entral C oast h ave b een l iving w ith similar water restrictions since the early 2000s and many rural areas rely on much tougher restrictions to guarantee their water supply. Here in the Hunter we are all responsible for ensuring that the way we use water ensure that our long-term water supply is not interrupted.

While t here a re s erious f ines f or bre aking t he W ater Wise Rules, Hunter Water has said they will be focusing on educating residents as the new rules are introduced.

By salary sacrificing a proportion of your pre-tax salary into your super, you could potentially reduce the amount of t ax you pay and set yourself up for a b etter lifestyle when you stop working.

Tip 2: Grow your super with a contribution from the government! I f y ou e arn le ss t han $ 33,516 p er a nnum and contribute up to $1,000 from your after-tax personal savings into super, then your super could receive up to $500 from the government’s co-contribution scheme.

Tip 3: Reduce the amount of tax you pay by pre-paying interest on your investment loan. If you have an investment portfolio or property with a loan attached, you can arrange to pay t he interest a y ear in advance a nd may qualify to claim the interest as a tax deductible expense for this current financial year.

Tip 4: Give something extra to your partner. If you’re partner i sn’t w orking, or e arns le ss t han $ 10,800 p er annum, t hen y ou m ay b e a ble t o c laim a n 18 % t ax offset on the first $3,000 you contribute into their super account.

Tip 5: Consolidate your super. By holding more than one super account you could be paying additional sets of fees. A way to reduce paying additional fees is to consolidate your super.

A s t he a bnormal s torage of t his f atty c ompound increases with time, the channels of these vessels become narrowed, leading to decreased blood flow and decreased nourishment of t he t issues nor mally s upplied by t hese vessels. Th is a bnormal p rocess oc curs i n b lood v essels throughout the body, particularly affecting vessels in the skin, kidneys, heart, brain and nervous system.

Fabry disease is slowly progressive. Symptoms result from d amage to t he k idneys, he art a nd c entral ne rvous system and usually appear between the ages of 30 to 45. In some cases, it is only when tests are carried out to find the cause of problems with the heart or kidneys that a diagnosis of Fabry disease made. I

recall singing in the rain at this time of y ear i n t he s treets of K ings C ross and D arlinghurst. O n G ood F riday each y ear t he Rom an C atholic, Un iting, B aptist a nd A nglican c ommunities of K ings C ross w alked t he s tory of G ood Friday a nd s ang of J esus’ p assion a nd of his presence in our community. Our song, rising a bove t he c ity s ounds, c arried u s to t he s tory of c rucifixion i n Gre en P ark Darlinghurst and outside the St Vincent’s hospice t o re member h is bu rial. T he voices that sang of sadness, of love and of faith in One who still walks with us are the sounds of Good Friday.

T here a re h uman s ounds of ou r o wn dying and rising in Holy Week. For life and death, e ndings a nd b eginnings, ho lding on and letting go, turning away or embracing, breaking and mending, these are the sounds of ou r human experience. And in the H oly s eason w e r emember th at th ey are e choes of t he s ounds of c rucifixion and of an empty tomb.

The sounds of dying and rising are heard on many levels at present. We have daily reminders of tribal and national interests around the planet that give voice to war and destruction. Yet in these fragile times, how often do w e see the capacity of i ndividuals a nd g roups t o de monstrate l ife, kindness and grace in the midst of the ash and suffering.

Last July an extraordinary young woman

said these words to the U N, “It takes one teacher, one s tudent, one p en, one b ook” to c hange a w orld. M alala, a y oung P akistani girl was shot in the head on a s chool bus f or sp eaking u p a bout e ducation f or girls, w as no w sp eaking a bout t he one thing t hat was needed for every c hild on the pl anet. At t he Un ited Na tions on he r 16th bi rthday she de livered a p owerful response to he r at tempted mu rder b y radicals. “ They t hought t hat t he bu llet would s ilence u s. B ut t hey f ailed,” she said. First, we see that God, in Jesus, is against i njustice, prejudice a nd bi gotry, and f or com passion a nd ju stice, f or t he poor, the excluded and the suffering.

S econdly, we see that God sets h is seal on Jesus’ work and teaching by raising him from the dead. Despite the apparent victory of i njustice and cruelty on G ood Friday, it turns out that the fate of Jesus, and t herefore of ev eryone a nd of t he creation a s a who le, i s i n G od’s h ands.

And on E aster Su nday G od sho wed h is hand.

Christians don’t, or shouldn’t, take this to mean that we should simply put up with what t he world d ishes out because it w ill a ll b e s et r ight s ome t ime a fter death. R ather, w e g ain cou rage f rom Jesus’ ri sing t o g o ah ead an d s eek t o change t he w orld, k nowing t hat, i n trying to live as he did, we are on the right si de of h istory. A nd s o w e t ry t o respect, a nd i ndeed l ove, a ll o thers i n our world as Jesus did and taught. These are t hings t hat Jesus l ived a nd d ied for.

And God did not allow death to have the last word on him.

He is risen! Happy Easter.

Knights' defence key to win Coach Wayne Bennett applauds return of Jarrod Mullen in victory over the Raiders PAUL MONFORTE

he return of J arrod M ullen and a return to strong defence were the most pleasing aspec ts of the Knigh ts’ 26- 12 win over the Raiders in Canberra.

Mullen had originally been ruled out for much longer t han t he f irst f ive g ames of t he s eason with his hamstring injury, but was always confident of coming back well ahead of schedule.

“It’s just good to be back playing footy again,” Mullen said. “I’ve been training for the last eight weeks and not playing on the weekend.

“It does your head in a bit, but it’s good to get back out there and get amongst the team. We’ve got re al g ood me dical s taff a nd t hey’ve b een working very closely with me.

“Phil (Coles) our physio has been great, so the diagnosis w as prob ably 1 2 t o 1 6 w eeks s o i t’s good to come back and get through a f ull game The lungs were bu rning, but I g ot t hrough t he game so that’s a positive.”

Coach W ayne B ennett w as i mpressed w ith Mullen’s f irst g ame b ack s ince t he Au ckland Nines. “We do need him back, there’s no doubt about that,” he said.
