abor councillor Nuatali Nelmes is Newcastle’s new lord mayor. Councillor Nelmes plan to revitalise the city, while restoring trust in Council, proved popular with voters, as she stormed to victory with just over 42 per cent of the primary vote in Saturday’s lord mayoral by-election. Cr Nelmes polled well-ahead of Independent and fellow councillor, Brad Luke, who received just shy of 24 per cent of the primary vote. The Newcastle Greens recorded one of their best results for a lord mayoral election, with Cr Therese Doyle claiming 14 per cent of first preference votes. Cr Doyle said Cr Nelmes’ election heralded a new beginning for the city. “Our result, combined with Labor’s decisive win, shows clearly that Newcastle voters want a Council that listens to their concerns, that provides community services once more, and that doesn’t do deals with vested interests behind closed doors,” he said. “I look forward to a new era of openness on Newcastle City Council where we can all feel assured the affairs of the city will be out in the open and will be conducted democratically, as they should.” At 38-years-old Cr Nelmes is the youngest person ever to serve as lord mayor of Newcastle and only the second woman to elected to the role, the first being the late Joy Cummings.
