roperty developer, Jeff McCloy has stood down as lord mayor of Newcastle “effective immediately� following a week of dramatic revelations at the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) and mounting pressure from the State Government.

In a resignation letter sent to Newcastle City Council general manager, Ken Gouldthorp and the people of Newcastle, Mr McCloy stood by his

mayoral legacy, saying he had left Newcastle in a better state physically and financially than what it was when he came to office in September 2012. “I believe that I am leaving the city in much better shape financially and physically than it was when I started,� he said. “I would like to personally thank the general manager and staff of Newcastle City Council and the thousands of Novocastrians who supported change in our city. “It was been a privilege serving the people of Newcastle, but now I will leave this to others.

“I encourage the elected council to continue focusing on local issues of significance for the Newcastle community and the progression of the city.�

While acknowledging that the controversy surrounding his role in the 2011 election funding scandal may have impacted on the proper functioning of Council, Mr McCloy did not apologise for his actions.

I had an eye-opening experience last week when attending the Hunter Homeless Connect Day at Broadmeadow PCYC. Firstly, I couldn’t believe how many people had turned up for the event.

There would have been close to 1,000 visitors in addition to the 100 staff and volunteers from the numerous businesses and government organisations that had donated their services.

I was also surprised to see how many young people and families were there.

The general feel of the whole day was upbeat and positive.

The various stalls and information booths were colourful and you just felt that this event was going to be invaluable to a lot of the people in attendance.

Prior to the day, I was probably guilty of taking the stereotypical view of what a homeless person should look like - perhaps an old person sleeping under cardboard boxes who possibly hasn’t washed for a while.

But after talking to the event’s coordinator, Lucy Andrews, I realised that these days the term ‘homeless’ also covers people who sleep in their cars and those who ‘couch surf’ - which means spending a night or two at the homes of numerous friends and families.

Upon researching homelessness a bit further, I discovered that more than one in six Australians aged 15-24 are living in poverty.

That’s a shocking figure.

According to the most recent Australian Bureau of Statistics Census of Housing and Population in 2011, there are just over 105,000 people in Australia who are homeless. Males account for

56% of this number and females 44%.

Around 28,000 of the 105,000 are from NSW, an increase of 20% from the previous Census conducted in 2006.

We like to think we have a high standard of living in this country and reading these figures really makes you sit up and take notice.

Every day, half of the people who need immediate accommodation from the various service providers have to be turned away due to a lack of space.

That’s also very troubling.

I’d assume after being knocked back a few times, some of those people would just give up trying to find a place to stay and drift further away from society.

It’s also very concerning to hear stories of families becoming homeless because one or both parents lose a job or become ill.

Lake Macquarie City Council has recommended building heights be increased in parts of Warners Bay a bit better.” Council’s report expressed a need to increase density, particularly along the waterfront, as a means of reinvigorating the town centre. “Whilst the community expressed a desire to avoid height on The Esplanade, redevelopment of these sites has the greatest capacity to transform the centre.”

David Naylor, president of the Warners Bay Chamber of Commerce said the chamber intended to make a submission about the plan following a meeting between local traders and Council’s planning consultants later this month.

The plan has been placed on public exhibition.

uildings in parts of Warners Bay could soon rise to increased heights, despite strong levels of community opposition.

As part of the Warners Bay Town Centre Planning Framework, officers from Lake Macquarie City Council have recommended maximum building heights be increased to 22 metres, or six storeys, along parts of John Street, King Street and The Esplanade.

The recommendation comes in the wake of community consultation, which revealed just 24 per cent of residents supported the idea of six-storey buildings in the town centre, while a third (33 per cent) were supportive of buildings up to four storeys. One Albert Street resident who provided feedback to Council told the Post that she was against introducing six-storey buildings to the city centre as it would only worsen parking problems.

“Taller buildings are only going to bring more cars into the surrounding streets and they’re already clogged up as it is,” the resident, who wished only to be known as Rose, said. “They would be better off building a two or three-storey carpark and look after what’s already here

Greens councillor, Michael Osborne has called on the State Government to change electoral funding laws before the October by-elections for the seats of Charlestown and Newcastle.

The call comes in the wake of the resignations of Newcastle MP, Tim Owen, Charlestown MP, Andrew Cornwell and Newcastle Lord Mayor, Jeff McCloy, who were all implicated in the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) inquiry into illegal political donations.

Cr Osborne said the laws need to change in order to stop history repeating itself.

“The temptation for candidates to accept dodgy donations remains while the rules create an imperative for each candidate to raise over $150,000 in donations,” he said.

“In these by-elections, candidates can spend up to $220,000 per seat, but can only get $66,000 back in public funding, leaving a gap of $154,000 per seat which could be met by donations.

“This means there is significant incentive to take donations wherever possible, even if it is illegal.

“We need to reduce how much money each candidate can spend and increase the percentage of public funding.”

NSW Premier, Mike Baird has indicated the Government is looking into a number of election funding reforms, including introducing full public funding, in the wake of the revelations at the ICAC. The Speaker of the NSW Legislative Assembly, Shelley Hancock announced on Monday that by-elections would be held in Charlestown and Newcastle on Saturday, October 25. The writs will be issued on Friday, October 3.

Mr Gouldthorp said a local government by-election would be held within three months to elect a new lord mayor, but until then it was “business as usual” for Council.

“Our focus remains on supporting the local community with the full range of Council services,” he said.

Last Friday, Minister for Local Government, Paul Toole issued a statement urging Mr McCloy to consider his position, saying the Government was “looking at every possible legal avenue to ensure the needs of the Newcastle community are put first”.

By Sunday, NSW Premier, Mike Baird was calling for Mr McCloy to “do the honourable thing and resign”.

Mr McCloy is the third Hunter politician to resign after being named in the ICAC’s inquiry into prohibited political donations. Tim Owen, the former member for Newcastle, and Andrew Cornwell, the former member for Charlestown, both resigned from Parliament last Tuesday and their electorate offices now sit vacant.

Both admitted to accepting illegal donations from Mr McCloy.

Swansea MP, Garry Edwards stood aside from the Liberal Party two days later after Mr McCloy gave evidence that he had given Mr Edwards $1,500 for “raffle tickets”.

“The guy from Swansea came to see me, Garry,” Mr McCloy told the Commission.

“He came round home, whatever was in my wallet, fifteen hundred bucks, raffle

#ICAC - social media’s take on the inquiry

Liberal Party state director, Tony Nutt described the corruption allegations revealed during the inquiry as “reprehensible”.

“The Liberal Party organisation apologises to the people of New South Wales for the extraordinary and reprehensible conduct of a small number of its elected representatives, members and activists,” he said in a statement. “The people of NSW have every reason to be deeply disappointed and angry at those responsible.

“The recent revelations, which resulted in the resignations from the Parliament of two MPs, require more than this apology

or remedial action to prevent past problems in the future.

“Accordingly, as an explicit act of atonement, the Liberal Party will not contest the Newcastle and Charlestown by-election.”

In an open letter to Newcastle voters, NSW Premier, Mike Baird said he was “deeply sorry for the way the Liberal Part has let down the people of Newcastle”.

“What hurts me most of all is the actions of a few have tarnished the wonderful achievements of the Liberals and Nationals in the Hunter Valley since 2011,” he wrote. On social media, the Premier said the party needed to get its house in order.

he University of Newcastle will see fewer students from disadvantaged backgrounds graduate from its Callaghan campus if the Abbott Governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tertiary education reforms pass through the Senate, according to Shadow Higher Education Minister, Kim Carr.

Visiting the university last Tuesday with Senator Deb Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Neill, Charlton MP, Pat Conroy and Newcastle MP, Sharon Claydon, Senator Carr said the Coalitionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s plan to deregulate the sector and reduce funding would have a particularly negative impact on students and universities in regional areas, like Newcastle. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A third of the students at this university come from poorer backgrounds and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s less opportunity for them to be able to meet the increased debt levels which this Government is imposing,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll see immediately students making choices about turning away from university. Universities will have to make choices, do they increase fees, do they reduce the course offerings or do they reduce their campuses? â&#x20AC;&#x153;They may have to do all of those things.â&#x20AC;?

“I have been homeless in the past but I’m living in public housing in Tenambit at the moment.

“I’ve been around to a lot of the other stalls - I got some toiletries and a scarf.

The food’s great as well and so is the coffee. The last time I came, two years ago, I ended up getting a birth certificate and some legal advice.

“It’s really well organised - you don’t have to wait long to get an appointment at any of the stalls.”

tudents from disadvantaged backgrounds will receive a muchneeded leg-up thanks to a new partnership between the University of Newcastle and the Smith Family.

Up to 41 recipients of the Smith Family’s Learning for Life scholarship studying at the university will receive additional, annual financial support of $2,400 and access to mentoring programs.

The Smith Family’s NSW general manager, Steve Macready said the partnership was about ensuring everyone had access to a university education, regard-

less of their background or circumstances.

“Four out of 10 young Australians from financially challenged backgrounds are not engaged in work or study once they leave school,” he said.

Scholarship recipient, Anthony Jeffery is in the final year of an exercise and sports science degree at the university. He has been supported by the Smith Family since 2007 and told the Post he intended to continue his studies and become a cardiologist. “I have 13 years of further study ahead of me to become a cardiologist,” he said. “But with the support of the Smith Family, I’m motivated to achieve my goals.”

usinesses, charities and government departments joined forces last week in a show of generosity to almost 1000 people for the Hunter Homeless Connect Day at Broadmeadow PCYC. Homeless and at-risk people from the wider Hunter region were able to access the event with free train and bus travel offered. The event has operated annually since 2009 to support those in need with the Hunter region accounting for 7% of the 28,000 people currently homeless in NSW. “Every year we’ve seen an increase in the number of people accessing the event and this year wasn’t any different,” Hunter Homeless Connect Coordinator, Lucy Andrews said.

“This year Compass Housing sponsored the coordination of the event and we had over 70 government, non-government and not-for-profit organisations on hand to provide support and advice and to offer free food, clothing and hundreds of warm blankets and care packs to those in need.”

Visitors were offered health checks, including immunisations and podiatry services, as well as being able to organise free birth certificates and legal advice.

Council has many well-maintained shared pathways and the brochure features 12 of the most popular routes currently enjoyed by Lake Macquarieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own cycling community. Another way Council is encouraging a healthy lifestyle is its commitment to our swim centres. The community has previously told us they want to see more contemporary facilities that offer many of the features found in modern aquatic and leisure centres.

Council has identified potential options for the redevelopment of the Charlestown and Swansea swim centres and is now seeking community feedback.

In 2009, the elected Council resolved to adopt the Pool Service Delivery Model as the strategy for the future development of the Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s public swimming centres. In 2013 Council then resolved to support the development of plans for Charlestown and Swansea leisure centres to the development application stage as the two highest priorities.

The proposed upgraded centres in Charlestown and Swansea include indoor and outdoor pools, gym facilities and waterplay areas, and, at Charlestown, the inclusion of allied health facilities.

Police snapshot Firearms and drugs seized in Boolaroo

The Friends of Grossman House will be stepping out of Maitland this weekend to take a walk through historic Tighes Hill.

Local guide and heritage architecture enthusiast Wayne Campbell will lead the tour, that will explore the major streets of the suburb, which was established in the 1870s. An afternoon tea will follow at

Mr Campbell’s Mayfield home. All proceeds from the walk will fund the ongoing maintenance of Maitland’s Brough and Grossman Houses. The tour will be held on Sunday, August 24 at 2pm and costs $25 ($20 for National Trust members), including afternoon tea.

Police have charged a man after firearms and prohibited drugs were seized after a car was searched in Lake Macquarie on Monday.

Police from Lake Macquarie Local Area Command received information about a car in Third Street, Boolaroo, in Lake Macquarie at 6.30pm on Sunday night.

Officers attended the location and spoke to a 31-year-old man sitting in a car parked on the street.

The car was searched and investigators will allege that multiple firearm parts were located including a wooden butt end, ammunition, trigger mechanisms, two firearm barrels and a home-made silencer.

The man was arrested and taken to Toronto Police Station where he was charged with: drive while licence suspended, posses prohibited weapon without permit, acquire firearm with no licence/ permit, not keep firearm safely, possess ammunition, possess a barrel for a firearm (x2), possess prohibited drug.

He was refused bail and appeared at Toronto Local Court on Monday.

Children approached in Redhead Police are appealing for public assistance after three children were approached in the Lake Macquarie on Saturday.

About 10.45am, an 11-year-old boy was waiting for friends outside a supermarket on Cowlishaw Street, Redhead, when a man allegedly approached him.

The man offered the boy lollies, allegedly urging him to get inside a white, early model hatchback parked nearby.

The boy declined before being joined by two friends, aged 12.

The man then allegedly urged the two friends to get inside his vehicle and they declined.

He walked to the car and was last seen driving on Cowlishaw Street towards Hutchinson Street.

The boys later reported the incident to their parents, who contacted police.

Detectives from Lake Macquarie Local Area Command would now like to speak to a man who they believe may be able to assist with inquiries.

The man is described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged between 60 and 70 years old, with a solid to overweight build and short, grey hair.

He was last seen wearing a green, long-sleeved jacket.

Police have been told the white hatchback had a number of charity stickers on the rear window.

Police have launched an investigation after the death of a man at a work site at Lambton in Newcastle last week.

About 9pm on Thursday 14 August, emergency services were called to the workplace on Wyong Road, near the intersection of Norah Road, after receiving reports of an injured man at the location.

Officers attached to Newcastle City Local Area Command arrived to find a 44-year-old man trapped between a vehicle and the wall of a building.

Inquiries have revealed the man was conducting repairs to the vehicle, when it rolled forward and trapped him between the driver’s side door and wall.

The man sustained extensive injuries and was treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics, but was pronounced deceased a short time later.

A crime scene has now been established, which will be examined by detectives and forensic specialists.

The vehicle will be seized for forensic mechanical examination and an investigation is also underway by Work Cover.

Inquires into the matter are continuing and a report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

Police are appealing for information after a vehicle fire at Belmont South last Thursday morning.

About 2am, a 47-year-old man was awoken by noises outside his unit on Marriot Street.

The man went outside and saw a black Nissan on fire, which belonged to a friend.

Police from Lake Macquarie Local Area Command and Fire & Rescue NSW personnel attended.

Fire crews extinguished the blaze; however, the vehicle was destroyed.

At this stage the fire is being treated as suspicious and officers have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

ood and fitness fanatics are in for a treat at next month’s Living Smart Festival, with Lake Macquarie City Council confirming that Sarah Wilson, author of the New York Times best-seller I Quit Sugar, will be making an appearance at the event.

This year’s festival will focus on food and low-waste cooking, a topic the popular blogger said she is particularly passionate about.

“I grew up on a subsistence-living farm with goats for milk and meat,” she said.

“Today, I advocate minimalism in all aspects of my life, including cooking.

“I’m looking forward to sharing my thoughts with festival-goers at this year’s Living Smart Festival.”

Council’s sustainability manager, Alice Howe said the event would offer up advice for families looking to cut down on their household food waste.

“This year we are hoping to share with the community helpful hints on growing your own food and clever cooking tips to avoid waste,” she said.

Harley is one of over a thousand dogs nationwide who volunteer for the Delta Society’s therapy program, visiting hospitals, nursing homes and schools to help in healing and learning processes.

He was also at Toronto Library for last week’s local launch of Dogs that make a Difference, a compilation of stories of Delta Dogs from across the country.

“Everyone knew the benefits, but there wasn’t anything on paper,” Ms Curran said.

All proceeds from book sales go back to Delta Dog program, including the BaRK program at Lake Macquarie City Libraries, which allows children to practice reading one-on-one to a dog in a judgement-free environment.

The local not-for-profit provides support to men and women suffering from breast cancer, organising free housekeeping, ironing, landscaping and transportation to appointments. HBCF president, Rosalie Taggart said the foundation would not be able to complete its work without financial support from the community.

“It’s because of the generosity of people, including Clubs NSW, that we can say, yes we can, when we get a call for support.”

Andrew Walker, secretary manger of Pelican Flat RSL Club, said clubs were a meeting place for all members of the community so it was important that they gave back.

The signs and symptoms of diabetes can vary from person to person, however the main symptoms that can occur include: • Going to the toilet (urinating) more often • Thirsty • Tired and lethargic • Blurred vision • Feeling dizzy • Headaches • Always feeling hungry • Pain or tingling or cramps in the legs or feet • Itching, skin infections or rashes • Having cuts that heal slowly • Mood swings / Irritability • Gradual weight gain A person with diabetes may experience one, or a combination of the above symptoms.

Some people with diabetes however, will not experience any (or at least not notice them).

That means that you might have diabetes and not even know it!

Diagnosing diabetes is simple. It simply involves a blood test which can be ordered by your GP. If you think that you might have diabetes or are at high risk of developing it, the best thing to do is to talk to your GP. Your GP can order the blood test for you. Then you can stop wondering!

If you do have type 2 diabetes, the sooner you find out the better.

There are many great health professionals that can help you to understand what it is and how to manage it well, including doctors, diabetes educators, dietitians and exercise physiologists (to name a few).

The tragic suicide death of Robin Williams last week sparked an increase in calls to help centres such as Lifeline and BeyondBlue as people struggling with mental illness took the step to seek help.

Suicide is mostly preventable, but not everyone experiencing suicidal thoughts takes the step to talk about it or actively seek help on their own.

In many cases family, friends and colleagues can be the ones to start a conversation and help get the person the care and support they need. If you are concerned that a friend, relative or colleague may be considering suicide, it is better to take action now than to wait and see if it gets better. Taking the first step to start a conversation about depression and suicidal thoughts can be very difficult, for you and the person you are concerned about.

But even just starting with the simple question “Are you okay?” will potentially open the door to a deep discussion that can lead to the person accessing the care and support they need.

If it is someone you love it can be very difficult to not feel panic or even anger at their suicidal thoughts.

What we need to be aware of is that people considering suicide often feel so completely disconnected, isolated and overwhelmed that rational thought is replaced by feelings of hopelessness and they usually cannot see any other way out.

If you feel that someone you know is in immediate danger of harming themselves the best option is to call for an ambulance on 000 or take them to your nearest hospital emergency department. Being able to tell if someone is thinking about suicide doesn’t have to be difficult - sometimes just asking the question will get you the answer.

Beyond Blue (beyondblue.org.au), Lifeline (lifeline.org.au) and R U OK? (ruok.org.au) provide some excellent information.

Anyone needing advice or support will find it from their GP, mental health professionals, counsellors (including school counsellors for children and teens) or by calling Lifeline’s Telephone Crisis Support on 131114 or Beyond Blue on 1300224636 (both open 24 hours/day).

While there is lots of talk about elections at the moment, there are a number of other ways that people can have an influence in society. One of these ways is influencing the choice people make about where to put their money.

Divestment is the opposite of investment. It is the organised campaigning for individuals, groups and companies to sell their unethical investments. The commonly targeted groups in divestment campaigns are banks, universities, superannuation funds and churches.

Perhaps the most successful divestment campaign was the anti-apartheid campaign that urged individuals and groups to divest from companies dealing with South Africa during 1970-80s. The pressure on companies to change their behaviour or lose investors added an economic campaign to run along side the political one.

Universities have been leaders in divestment from tobacco advertising companies and are now leaders in moves to divest from fossil fuels. Polluting companies receive huge subsidies from government but they also have easy access to financing from banks and superannuation funds. Companies focused on renewable energy can deliver the same return from investment but struggle to get the start up funds they need from these investors. There are currently student driven campaigns at nine universities in Australia including the University of Newcastle. You can attend an information evening for the Movement to Divest at the Callaghan Campus of University of Newcastle, at 6pm Thursday 21 August in the Life Sciences Building.

We recently hosted our, Newcastle Financial Planning, ‘Night On The Couch’ property-focused client event. We heard from local expert real estate identities on a variety of property investment opportunities and the local market.

Buying off the plan: Wayne Stewart shared the pros of buying off the plan, “the opportunity to buy at today’s prices and settle at tomorrow’s” and the cons “you could invest a lot of time and money, only for a development not to proceed”.

Residential market: Mark Kentwell gave his opinions on the residential market, “Newcastle is poised for a very strong decade, underpinned by developments including the light rail network, the University of Newcastle New Space project, the NSW Government’s new courthouse development and the GPT/UrbanGrowth NSW project”.

Commercial property: Ty Blanch shared his knowledge on commercial property and “just like the residential market, the most important thing in commercial is location. But the drivers are very different”.

It’s not just the local agents that are extremely confident in the local property market. Two thirds of our clients that attended our event indicated that they plan on making at least one property transaction in the next 12 months and 75% of those transactions will be purchases. Every day in Australia, about 300 people are told they have a life-threatening cancer.

The survival rate for many common cancers has increased by 30% in the past two decades, but we still have a long way to go and Daffodil Day is one way of raising some of the funds that are needed to further increase the survival rate from cancers.

There is good news and that is that while cancer is on the increase, death rates are falling and today more than 50 per cent of all cancers can be successfully treated.

In Australia the most common cancers - excluding non-melanoma skin cancers - are prostate (actually the most common), colorectal (bowel), breast, melanoma and lung cancer.

The Cancer Council says an estimated 124,910 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in Australia this year, with that number set to rise to 150,000 by 2020.

It also says one in two Australian men and one in three Australian women will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85.

THE 12-DAY 54TH ANNUAL MATTARA Carnival with 1091 entries rolled into action on Monday with the playing of Sectional play in the Les Parrott Memorial Open Singles and the Restricted Singles for Number 4 to 7 Grade Pennant player standard.

Four previous winners contested the Les Parrott Memorial Open Singles, namely defending champion Chris Ramage (Soldiers Point), two times titleholder 2000 & 2003 Tony Miller (North Haven), 2001 champion Vic Papworth (Water Board) and 2005 titleholder Ian Lean (Raymond Terrace).

The semi-finals and finals of both events were scheduled to be played at Wallsend on Wednesday.

Sectional play in the Mixed Open Pairs commences on Thursday, followed by the Mens Open Fours on Saturday, the Men’s Open Pairs and Restricted Pairs next Monday and the Frank Neat Memorial Classic K.O. Club Nominated Men’s Triples next Wednesday. The semi-finals and finals of these events will be held at Warners Bay on Friday, August 29.

Local rugby Wanderers cemented their spot on top of the NHRU ladder with an 82-16 thrashing of Easts at Dangar Park.

William Coffey scored three tries and Callan Groth two for the Wanderers.

Hamilton overcame Nelson Bay 37-24 at Strong Oval and are a clear second.

Mataiasi Ucutabua crossed twice for Hamilton.

Third-placed Southern Beaches had no trouble disposing of University 43-0 at Allan Davis Oval.

Michael Delore grabbed two tries for Southern Beaches.

he five teams to contest this season’s Tooheys Cup finals have been decided with the last round of action this weekend to determine the exact ladder spots.

Macquarie are a chance of claiming the minor premiership after defeating Western Suburbs 26-6 at Peacock Field.

South Newcastle will need the top two teams to lose, but are also a chance of finishing first following their 22-10 win over Maitland at Maitland Sportsground.

Central Newcastle had a convincing 34-6 victory over Kurri Kurri at Kurri Kurri Sportsground and are well-placed in fourth position.

Lakes United thrashed Port Stephens 42-16 to move further away from the bottom of the ladder.

Knights flying high on belief Players' confidence returning and results follow as Warriors become latest high-profile scalp PAUL MONFORTE

oaches often talk about confidence being a key factor in the fortunes of their teams and the Knights have plenty of it at the moment.

Knights coach, Wayne Bennett said after Sunday’s 28-22 victory over the Warriors at Hunter Stadium that his players were now starting to back themselves and were reaping the results.

“I think we played some great football,” Bennett said.

“It was wonderful, they played excellent. “[The Warriors] just got two or three flukey tries that kept them in the game.

“We’ve beaten a lot of top eight teams in this eight-week period.”

Knights captain, Kurt Gidley backed Bennett’s comments.

“When you’re down on confidence you’re not quite throwing your passes as crisp and not talking as much because you’re a little bit down on confidence,” he said.

“As soon as you start winning a few games, you’re more confident in everything that you do.

“You’re talking more so all those little things stack up to be a better performance.”

The Mata’utia brothers, Sione (three tries) and Chanel (one try), starred for the home side, with Bennett giving high praise to winger Sione.

“He has wonderful attributes, the great thing about him is I imagine one day he’ll captain the Knights and he’ll be a great player," he said.

“It’s a long way away for him but I’m sure one day that’s where he’ll be heading.”

“Sione’s played fullback for us, he’s preferred position is centre and he played great on the wing today,” Bennett added.

Newcastle’s NYC team had a high-scoring 40-34 win over the Warriors to maintain top spot on the ladder.

Harry Pondekas and Danny Levi both crossed twice for the Knights.

The Knights’ NSW Cup side had a solid 26-12 victory over the Warriors at St John Oval on Saturday afternoon and are in sixth place.

This weekend, the Knights head north to take on the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium at 5.30pm on Saturday.

Rick Stone’s NSW Cup side will play Manly at 3pm on Sunday afternoon at No.2 Sports Ground.
