Speaking t o A BC T V’s c urrent a ffairs pro gram 7.30, C FMEU pre sident f or m ining a nd i ndustry, Peter Jordan said the mining sector needed to “have a good look at ourselves”. “I’d like to think we do have safe mines. These incidents shouldn’t happen,” Mr Jordan said. “It is a difficult, dangerous industry, but still, the industry should let t hese m ine workers go home to their families at the end of their shift. “I don’t criticise any individual party. I say that, look, t he propr ietors, t he e mployers, t he m ine workers, th e uni on, th e r egulator, th e g overnments, we need to look at what’s happening and we need to be sure, we have to answer the question, is the industry safe?” Jamie M itchell, 4 9, of A berdare a nd P hillip Grant, 35, of Metford died last week when a wall collapsed a t th e A ustar C oal Min e cr ushing Mr Mitchell and Mr Grant. Several other workers in the vicinity were able to escape unharmed. A number of the victims’ colleagues remained on site for 44 hours until both bodies were retrieved on Thursday.
