The wait is over The Junction Public School to get long-awaited new classrooms • AMELIA PARROTT _ @amelia_parrott

t may have taken a quarter of a century but the Junction Public School is finally getting new classrooms. Up to $3 million has been allocated in the State Budget to replace the demountable classrooms that have housed students since the school's main building was badly damaged by the Newcastle Earthquake in 1989. "It's been a while coming," the Junction Public School principal, Wendy Cheek told the Post. "The school lost a significant amount of permanent classrooms in the earthquake. "The main building was a double-storey brick building with around 20 classrooms and all that was destroyed." "We're obviously delighted that this has come about and it will only further enhance the learning environment at the school." Five new permanent classrooms will be built as part of the upgrade, incorporating modern technology, contemporary architecture and building methods and plenty of space for students to engage in twenty-first century learning. Member for Newcastle, Tim Owen said the planning phase of the project would begin this year. "While the exact configuration ofthe classrooms is yet to be finalised, the new classrooms are expected to include wet areas and also have the flexibility to cater for smaller learning groups," he said.

"I would like to commend the school community for its advocacy - 1 know they have wanted this upgrade for a long time. "Combined with other planned improvements,

the work will enable the school to offer even better learning opportunities for its students." The project is expected to be completed in time for the start of the 2016 school year.
