he state seats of Newcastle and Charlestown were gifted back to the Labor Party over the weekend, with Labor’s candidate for Newcastle, Tim Crakanthorp, and candidate for Charlestown, Jodie Harrison clinching victory in by-elections for their respective seats. The race for Newcastle was a hard-fought affair with Independent, Karen Howard putting in a strong performance, picking up 26 per cent of first preferences, just 4,000 votes behind the new Member Elect for Newcastle, Mr Crakanthorp. Mr Crakanthorp, who claimed 37 per cent of the primary vote, said he was unfased by the closerthan-expected result. “This has been a Liberal held seat and prior to that it had a margin of around one per cent so this hasn’t been a safe Labor seat for a very long time,� he said. “I’m never treating it as such, never have and I certainly never will. “I’ll work my guts out for this city and I’ll do my best for the people of Newcastle - they have entrusted me and I will respect that.� In a message to her supporters on Facebook, Ms Howard hinted that she may run again in the general election in March. “The initial results were inspiring to say the least, and have sent a serious message to the political parties that a Newcastle Independent is a force to be reckoned with,� she wrote.

Ms Harrison stormed to victory in Charlestown, collecting nearly half of the primary vote. She said she intended to keep the Government true to its promises. “I certainly intend to represent the people of Charlestown for the next five months before the next election, and then again
beyond, with honesty, with integrity, which I believe I’ve shown to date,� she said. “I intend to keep the Baird Government true to its promises, but I also intend to make sure that Labor has a good strong representation in the Hunter and in Charlestown.� The by-elections came off the back of the resignations of former Liberal MPs Tim Owen and Andrew Cornwell, who were embroiled in allegations of illegal political donations aired earlier this year at the Independent Commission Against Corruption.
