Say what you like about popstress Lady GaGa but, love her or hate her, underneath all of the Bowie and Alice Cooper-esque histrionics, there lies a someone with unmistakable talent - something that cannot be said for many contemporaries - and it certainly shows on this beguiling “standards” collaboration with the King of Croon - Tony Bennett.

The thing that truly surprises about this album is the chemistry that exists the pair here is palpable.

Further, while at times GaGa struggles for restraint, Bennett provides the perfect measured foil.

Standouts here include a brilliant version of the Nat King Cole hit Nature Boy, Irving Berlin’s Cheek to Cheek and the Cole Porter standard Anything.

REPEAT OFFENDER Epic show in the offing Gold Coast-based prog rockers Mass Sky Raid will be making their maiden East Coast voyage this month on the back of the release of their epic new single Oceans.

If you haven’t heard of Mass Sky Raid yet, chances are, if Oceans is anything to go by, you will be hearing more and more of them in the next little while because its an absolute cracker.

In fact, Dead Letter Circus frontman, Kim Benzie was heard to remark that it’s

the catchiest song I’ve heard in ages.’ Not a bad wrap at all.

The single is the follow-up to the band’s critically acclaimed debut EP Courage Under Fire which garnered a shedload of airplay - with tracks like Broken Wires, Awake and Courage Under Fire popping up regularly on stations like 4ZZZ, 2FBi, 3RRR and 3PBS. There will be a round robin of three games followed by the finals.There will then be a playoff amoung all winning clubs until it comes down to five winners. A wildcard will also be picked and then the six teams will head to Hawaii in February next year to take on their best.

n the early 1980s, a band emerged from the disparate post-punk Sydney music scene who, in the 12 months after forming, not only became the first Sydney-based band to be signed to Mushroom Records, but also managed to produce a debut album that is widely regarded as one of the greatest albums of the era.

That band is the Sunnyboys and after more than 20 years away (a gig opening for Elvis Costello at Bimbadgen notwithstanding), the original line-up will be making a more-than-welcome return to Newcastle this month.

“I honestly can’t remember how long it would’ve been - possibly even 30 years ago,” bass player Peter Oxley told TE. “I remember it was with Midnight Oil and we played on Redhead Beach and there were thousands there - it was pretty bloody wild, but Newcastle always was in those days, we always had a really good following up there.”

After the release of their self-titled debut - with songs like Happy Man, Alone With You, Tunnel of My Love and Trouble in my Brain bristling with a power pop intensity - the Sunnyboys were touted as the next big thing - largely due to enigmatic frontman Jeremy Oxley’s whip-smart pop

I

sensibility and undeniable songwriting talents.

However, after just four years and three brilliant albums, the band broke up, largely due to Jeremy’s battle with schizophrenia (a subject that is covered more than adequately in Kaye Harrison’s beautiful documentary The Sunnyboy - one of the best music docos in recent memory) and, (despite a swansong record Wildcat) had remained pretty well dormant ever since.

That was until the band performed, under the moniker of Kids in Dust at the 2012 Hoodoo Gurus-curated Dig it Up Festival. Since then, it has been a flurry of activity, with a sold-out national tour, a reissue of the debut and a best-of compilation once again reigniting interest in the band.

“We were all really nervous about the Dig it Up show because we weren’t sure if, firstly Jeremy would be up to it and secondly if he would even enjoy playing,” Oxley said.

“As it happened we needn’t have worried because he played really well and he had an absolute ball - it really felt like yesterday.

“With Jeremy’s health issues, everything could’ve gone either way but since that show his playing is just getting better and better - it’s really quite inspiring.”

Eden said: This was great.

This was a story of a kid called Egg growing up as a Boxtroll, he did not realise he was a boy.

That was a bit of a shock when he found out.

He had a great time living underground with his Boxtroll family.

This is a tale about the good people being actually bad and the bad people being actually good.

Again, there was this message about not listening but, this time, it was a dad who would not listen to his daughter Winnie.

There was danger, funny bits, sad bits, and bits that were a bit of a worry. My little sister cuddled up a few times when she was a bit scared. Archibald Snatcher was a nasty dude.

All in all it was an exciting fast movie.

I think I will get the DVD when it comes out and add it to my library I rate this a great 5 out of 5.

Jasmine said: This was a good movie, and I especially loved it when the Boxtrolls got naked. I give it a 6 out of 5.

5/5 From the accompanying adult: This movie was based on the novel Here Be Monsters by Alan Snow it is a 3D stopanimated feature and well crafted. It did have some tense moments when Miss 5 gave a little shiver. Highlight for this adult was the end song Little Boxes by Malvina Reynolds Staying as the credit rolled was an extra treat as it was demonstrated how many photographic moves it takes to make one animated scene such as an eye ‘blink’.

Beguiling talent In an era where youthful female singer/songwriters tend to either travel the Britney Spears manufactured pop path or the laid-back road of Norah Jones, it’s refreshing to discover the music of Australia’s own Kim. An energetic performer whose music defies categorisation, Kim has progressively built a crowdpleasing reputation since branching out from her Toowoomba base in 2002.

or many moons lovers of the amber liquid have been forced to make the epic trek down the M1 to Sydney in order to enjoy the warm embrace of a Bavarian-style bier hall - limiting Novocastrians’ access to vital steins, pork knuckle and oom-pah music.

Thankfully, those years in the wilderness have come to an end with the opening of Das Hund Haus, Charlestown’s very own German bar and restaurant. Spawned from the brain of Shuck’d Oyster Bar owner, James Sneddon, Das Hund Haus offers diners everything you’d expect to find in a bier hall in Deutschland - hefty portions of meat and starchy carbs, friendly dirndlclad fräulein, plenty of Deutsch brew and a perpetual air of festive merriment.

We were lucky enough to join a packedhaus of hungry patrons last Friday night to sample some of the hearty dishes. We kicked off the night with a serve of beer’s traditional drinking partner, pretzels, which we were pleasantly surprised to find are housemade, and a share of klein weiner, chipolata pork sausage served with mustard and dense rye bread - this smokey grilled sausage paired with savoury seeded mustard had us salivating and ready for more.

As for the mains, a word of advice when visiting Das Hund Haus, bring your appetite, you’ll need it! I opted for a German classic, wiener schnitzel. While we Aussies may be accustomed to schnitzels of the chicken variety, the German’s schnitzel of choice is veal, and this piece was mighty!

Thick but tender, with a perfect golden crumb, and served with a more-thangenerous helping of sharp sauerkraut and two potato dumplings (kartoffelkloesse,

My dining partner went for the gerösteter schweinebauch, also known as pork belly.

With pork appearing so prominently on the menu, it’s no wonder the team at Das Hund Haus have quickly become masters of the crackle. This impressive dish featured two large slabs of belly, cooked to perfection, atop a bed of creamy potato mash with red cabbage. Truly satisfying.

Honourable mention must also go to Das Hund Haus’ specialty dish the pork knuckle. While neither my dining partner nor I had the guts to order it, I did suffer a bout of order envy when I spied it on my neighbours table - huge, with perfect crackle, need I say more.

With ample German beer and cider, both on tap and by the bottle and a menu that boasts both hearty mains and small shareables, Das Hund Haus may be the perfect place for your next big celebratory shin-dig or Friday night feast.

hile they may’ve been a little quiet on the recording front of late, with their last album Mousetrap Heart dropping in 2010, don’t go thinking that Thirsty Merc have ran out of puff.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of their breakthrough self-titled debut and to celebrate, they’ve released the Acoustic Anniversary Album - a collection of acoustic renditions of some of their best-loved songs such as Mousetrap Heart, 20 Good Reasons and Someday Someday. The band will also be hitting the road in support of the record and frontman Rai Thistlethwayte told TE that the prospect of getting back on Aussie roads was always an exciting one.

“We always had so much fun out on the road and I’m hoping that this tour will be no different - there’s a great feeling in the band at the moment - it’s a great time to be a member of Thirsty Merc,” he said.

With more than 200,000 album sales under their belts and a slew of classic pop-rock fare in their gig bag, it’s pretty much a free kick that Thirsty Merc have well and truly left their melody driven mark on the Aussie music landscape.

Thistlethwayte said, after an intensive period of recording and touring form their debut self-titled album in 2004 through to Mousetrap Heart, the band felt a sabbatical was in order.

hey may’ve been told, back in 1958 not to “give up their day jobs” as the whole rock and roll thing was just a fad, but thankfully, Aussie music legends The Delltones didn’t pay that advice much mind.

The Delltones have been entertaining audiences, playing, celebrating and elevating rock’n’roll for more than 50 years. Ian “Peewee” Wilson founding member and the most recognisable Delltone, the tall bass man, has kept the band alive from the original vocal quartet days to the transformation to a five piece vocal band in the early 1980”s.

This transformation led to the band’s resurgence and the chart topping revival album Bop Til Ya Drop.

Today the band has come full circle and has returned to their roots, a four-part harmony band. The Delltones remain one of the most consistent live entertainers in Australia with arguably the longest performing and recording history for a vocal harmony band with an original member.

The Delltones have a string of classic hits to their name Gee, You’re The Limit, Get a Little Dirt On Your Hands, Come a Little Bit Closer and Hangin’ Five. Finite Gallery’s Featured Artist for October is Lake Macquarie artist Margo Humphries.

Born and raised in Taree, Margo has been based in Newcastle since 2003. Margo began painting at a young age and won her first award when she was 12 years old in the Walkom-Manning Art Prize. Margo is passionate about art and displaying her colourful paintings and regularly exhibits at Art Bazaar. Her visual vocabulary has made her well known for her painterly style and vibrant canvases. In 2011, Margo was one of 10 artists selected for the Mattara Festival’s Outdoor Art Trail, she joined the Hunter Arts Network committee in 2012 and in 2013 Margo was one of the key participants in Free Art Friday - Newcastle The exhibition will run from Saturday 4 October to Sunday 26 October 2014 and all of Margo’s original paintings will be for sale.

Works from local emerging, and established, artists are exhibited and unlike many other galleries, works may be taken from the gallery at the time of purchase. This means that the exhibition is constantly changing as new works are added.

There is also range of high quality craft items and jewellery from local artisans.

Children from Floraville Public School art class are currently exhibiting work they have created including Hebel sculptures, self-portraits in clay and paintings in the Creative Kids exhibition.

The children range in age from 6 to 11 and attend class once a week after school with Finite Gallery director, Leslie Duffin.

Leslie, a qualified teacher, has been teaching the children at Floraville since 1998 and as well as the after school art classes, has completed several art projects with the year 6 students as a gift to the school.

The Creative Kids exhibition will be on until Sunday, October 5.

fter wowing pretty much everyone with her beautifully lilting EP, Rosie, 19-year-old songwriter Thelma Plum is back with her follow-up release Monsters - an EP which represents quite a big step in a new musical direction and also shows the depth of talent ingrained in this beguiling songwriter, just out of her teens.

Where Rosie was a collection of subtle acoustic tracks, Monsters sees Plum fleshing out her sound with a cast of players and slick production courtesy of M-Phazes.

Plum told TE that it was always her intention to make attempt a much larger sound with Monsters and, if you’ve heard the earworm of a lead single How Much Does Your Love Cost, you’d know she’s accomplished this, and more.

“The first EP was mainly acoustic based whereas this one is very beat oriented,” she said.

“From the outset I really wanted to make a much bigger record than the last one and I thought it would be interesting to see how mixing the folky acoustic thing with a more beats-y sound would work.

“Working with M-Phazes was just brilliant, too. He’s such a genius - like, I’d have a little idea then he’d come back in an hour and expanded it into something really wonderful.”

t may’ve been four years since we’ve last heard anything from the Beautiful Girls, but they’re redressing the balance with album number five - Dancehall Days - and a national tour in support of the release, although as frontman Mat McHugh explained, don’t go thinking it’s a reunion as the band never really went away.

“What it really is, is just bringing the

Beautiful Girls name back, I mean since the last album [2010’s, Spooks] I’ve been playing with the same guys but as Mat McHugh and the Seperatista Sound System so it’s not really what you’d call a reunion,” he said.

“The funny thing is that I would be on the road and I’d play some Beautiful Girls stuff and people would come up to me and ask, “why are you playing that band’s songs,” and it kind of got to a point where it was making me crazy.

“My whole thing is I want to play music

THE BEAUTIFUL GIRLS CAMBRIDGE HOTEL SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18 to as many people as possible and I guess with the Beautiful Girls I had all of these preconceptions about what it should be you know, bass, drums, guitar.

“But this album has a lot more of an 80s dancehall and dubby influence so it was more about realising that these boundaries were created by me and once I lost them I realised I could make any kind of album I wanted.”

McHugh added that there was a palpable sense of relief upon seeing the light at the end of the album tunnel, given the circumstances in which it was conceived.

“The last few records, I pretty much played all of the guitar parts and the horn

parts I came up with on the keyboard and gave them to the players to interpret and it’s a very intricate process - especially with Spooks which took about a year,” he said.

“But , with this one, which is kind of more intricate, I had to get it all done in about three months because it was crowdfunded and there was a timeframe to meet, so it was a really intense period where I was trying to do all of this and try and look after my three year old son - I mean there were times where I wasn’t sure if what I was making was music - it sounded like weird alien noises, but we got there in the end and it has definitely been a very positive learning experience.”

hen it comes to quiet achievers in the Oz music industry, they don’t come more so than John Swan, aka Swanee.

Since the age of 14, Jimmy Barnes’ older brother has been playing his rock and roll trade and in the process, with such tracks as If I Were a Carpenter, Lady What’s Your Name, Hold Your Head Up (with the Party Boys) and Lady What’s Your Name, has become part of this country’s musical backbone.

“I was never interested in being the biggest guy on the scene, I always just wanted to please people and entertain that’s what it’s all about for me.”

Swanee, will be back in Newcastle this month with a new album - One Day at A Time - his first since 2007s ripping Have a Little Faith and, as the title might suggest, it is quite a personal record.

“It is quite a personal album because it is largely about my battle with drugs and alcohol,” he said.

“I’ve been sober for 14 years now and I also go into schools now and talk to the kids about the dangers - but this album is about exploring that part of my life a little bit more.

“I’ve got no shame, I just say it straight out - this is what I am.

“Also, having the chance to play these songs in front of people is a very cathartic experience for me.’
