The pairing of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy (No Country for Old Men, The Road) and director Ridley Scott (Avatar, Alien) should have been something akin to cinematic gold.

If the sweaty machismo and spandex swagger of eighties hair metal (think LA Guns, Warrant, Poison et at) makes your teased mullet stand on end, then you’re going to want to give Steel Panther’s latest album All you Can Eat a spin. Sharpish.

This album, if you don’t take it too seriously – and with song titles like The Burden of Being Wonderful, and You’re Beautiful When You Don’t Talk, this fact is pretty much a free kick.

Sure, it’s low brow and slightly misogynist, but for every ill-placed joke there is a killer riff.

Honestly there are few that can re-create the sheer ridiculousness of 80s hair metal better than Steel Panther. If you don't take All You Can Eat too seriously, it is a seriously fun album with some surprisingly adroit musicality.

ince first performing the timeless Australian classic Old Man Emu on New Faces in 1970, country music legend John Williamson has been at the top of his game. With a career spanning more than 40 years, Williamson has been an integral cultural mouthpiece - helping Aussies make sense of and appreciate the spirit of the nation with a slew of unofficial anthems and intricately woven yet unpretentious and never mawkish tales that paint vivid pictures of life on the Australian land.

After releasing his brilliant A Hell of a Career two-disc compilation album, Williamson is hitting the Hunter for a string of dates and he told TE his connection with the region is a lasting one.

“I’ve always had a strong connection with the Hunter – I had a television show called Travellin’ Out West that was on NBN in the early seventies,” he explained.

“It’s going to be good to get back there – it’s been a little while, but I will say that I’m having more fun onstage than ever.”

Wiiliamson said, while he never imag-

ined he would still be plying his trade more than 40 years after the release of Old Man Emu, he had always had dreams of fame though, in the beginning, they may’ve been a tad misguided.

“I always had dreams of being famous – I think most people who pick up a musical instrument do.

“But, after I released my first album, I thought I’d be driving back to the farm in an Aston Martin. I really had no idea about what it was all about,” he laughed.

There’s little denying that, along with the likes of Paul Kelly and Don Walker, Williamson, with tracks like Raining on the Rock, Cootamundra Wattle and the ubiquitous True Blue is one of the most evocative songwriters this country has ever produced.

“I guess it’s just about writing songs that affect people,” he said.

“It’s the ones that make me cry that usually have an effect on the audience – songs like Cydi, about a father’s relationship with his daughter. I guess I’m just a sentimental bloke.”

While Williamson is placed well-andtruly in the country sphere, it may be a little disingenuous to label him merely a country artist when you consider the breadth of musical territory (country, folk, rock and even a dash of calypso) his career has covered.

“Obviously I heard Slim Dusty and Chad Morgan growing up, but I was really influenced by the folk scene in Melbourne in the 1960s and by artists like Pete Seeger and Joan Baez.

“I guess it’s a shame we all have to be pigeonholed. What I’d love to see is an Australian music festival, where everyone, regardless of the kind of music you play can come along and celebrate our Australianness.”

hen it comes to flamenco – the passionate folk music and dance from the Andalucia region in Spain – few do it better than legendary composer and guitarist Paco Peña.

As guitarist, composer, dramatist, producer and artistic mentor he has transformed perceptions of this archetypal Spanish art form. His latest production Flamencura brings together the highlyskilled virtuoso talents of Paco Peña and further explores the art of flamenco in the form of the cante (song), the guitar and the dance.

Flamencura looks at present day flamenco as well as the state of the art in years past. It is a kind of musical journey that aims to display the high level of development of modern flamenco, to highlight the razor sharp rhythmic complexity of its latest variations in dance, song and guitar. But also, it aims to glance back to the most primitive, pure forms of this captivating art and pay due respect to the legacy that tradition has left us; to observe the enormous inspiration that past eras of flamenco have given to today's artists; to show that the high levels of virtuosity achieved by today's dancers and guitarists is not unrelated to the cry "in extremis" of the lone singer of the past. In

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

After a career in animation spanning more than 50 years, The Wind Rises, the latest feature from Japanese director, Hayao Miyazaki, is being tipped as the legendary filmmakers swan song.

The film is centered around Jiro Horikoshi, an aeronautical engineer designing fighter planes during World War II. Tied in with Jiro’s pursuit of beautiful planes is his pursuit of Naoko Satomi, a beautiful young girl he saved as a university student during the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923.

I’m not sure if it was the fact that I entered the cinema without having seen Miyazaki’s other well-known and much-loved works, Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle, and therefore was unfamiliar with his style of filmmaking, but I just could not settle into the plot. The story moves swiftly from through Jiro’s, childhood, to adult years, through postings in Germany and parts of Japan. often leaving you wondering, “So, where are we now?” Despite this, it is truly beautiful film visually and the Jiro’s pursuit of beauty and love is both moving and delightful – as long as you can keep up.

While Darren Aronofsky and his idiosyncratic directorial style, may seem like a strange choice to resurrect the Biblical epic, he has managed to create a meaningful, humanistic story amid all of the CGI bells and whistles – despite taking some liberties with the source material. While the scope of this film is huge – a story about a man is chosen by God to undertake a momentous mission of rescue before an apocalyptic flood destroys the world could not be done any other way – at it’s heart, Noah, is a film about a man struggling to cope with his own obsessions. In this sense, Aronofsky’s Noah fits in quite well with his other protagonists – the ballerina in Black Swan struggling to attain perfection, the mother and son in Requiem for a Dream and their self destructive obsessions and the down and out Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler. While story of Noah is presented here in broad strokes, there are several additions to flesh out the story, such as the inclusion of Ray Winstone and his band of flesh-eating men who are threatening to storm the ark.

ot on the heels of their ridiculously danceable slice of rock and roll – the sophomore EP We Are Groovy Boys, Melbourne funsters The Stiffys are gearing up to hit town this weekend and as drummer Adam Stagg told TE, Newcastle punters should get ready to have the time of their lives.

“The shows have been going really well – there has been lots of BYO boogie boards – actually the three things that we’ve been seeing at shows are boogie boards, the ladies and lots and lots of positivity. A Stiffys show is literally, and I mean literally, the best time you could ever hope to have,” he said.

merican-born fibre artist Kerr Grabowski is currently in Newcastle, presenting her first Australian exhibition The Wearable Narratives, at Timeless Textiles.

“Yeah we’re really pumped about the EP – it’s the first time we’ve done anything professionally in a studio – there’s horns and all kinds of pro sounding s**t on it,” he said. “Also, we wanted to let everybody know that we don’t just sing about stiffys so we have songs on there about champagne, boogie boards, being really good at sex, breakfast cereal and, of course, stiffys.”

So what advice do two of Melbourne’s grooviest boys have for the lads in Newcastle. “Ordinary guys who want to become groovy boys need to get boogie boards, do kick flips in front of the ladies, hold hands with ladies and do push-ups in front of ladies. fter two hard hitting albums in Bed of Light and Cashology, Central Coast muso Mark Cashin, along with his band the Lil Husseys, looks like he may’ve gone one better with his latest album A Velvet Hour hitting the streets this month.

An unashamed rock and roll belter, the album was preceded by the lead single For So Long which has already picked up quite a bit of airplay in Australia, South Africa, the US, the UK and Denmark.

“Yeah, it’s great to have the album out and the single really does seem to be moving along really well – we’re all really happy with it,” Cashin told TE. Cashin said that this time around, it’s Lil Husseys 2.0 with new members Dave Hess and Christian Gill on guitars, joining original Hussey Dave Hentzschel on bass and Cashin’s son Coen on drums.

“It’s also a bonus having my son in the band, it feels like things have come full circle a bit.”

Cashin, who has been plying his trade around the traps for years now in bands like Smash Palace said he was first influenced to pic up a microphone by his father, who passed away when he was ten, although it was a near-death experience that inspired his solo career trajectory.

“Yeah my dad was definitely my biggest inspiration – he was a singer as well and he died when I was ten,” he said.

“I’d been playing around in bands for years and I ended up having a 100-kilometre-per-hour head-on car crash that was pretty full on and it was that brush with death that inspired me to write the first album Bed of Light and I’ve been at it ever since.

“This new album, though, is the best I’ve ever done – it’s going to totally dominate,” he laughed.

e’ve all experienced it; that sudden pang of starvation an hour after eating Chinese food which leaves you wondering why you even bothered, but if you’re looking for Chinese that will fill you up, you’ll find it at House of Peking.

The Jesmond mainstay has undergone a change in ownership in recent years but still remains popular as ever, with a mix of traditional and uncommon Chinese fare available on an extensive menu.

My dining partner and I attended on a bustling Saturday night and felt well looked after despite the business of the restaurant.

Out of the four varieties of dumplings on offer, my dining partner and I enjoyed the pork the most as it was warm and filling without being too dense. The serving was also generous, with 17 dumplings between us. They were served with pork buns, a delightful addition to the entrée.

We were then served Peking Duck, which came with pancakes, cucumber, shredded shallots and, of course, a generous serving of sauce. Between the two of us, we struggled to get through the entire helping of duck, which could easily have been shared between four people. The cucumber and shallots were a welcome addition to this meal, adding a freshness to the dish which gave it a real zing.

McEvoy brings Ireland to Newcastle

loyd Vincent will be bringing his band back to Newcastle this week for three shows around town.

The band has been renamed The Temple Dogs and has a new live album ready to drop mid-year. Despite living in Sydney, they have been stalwarts on the Newcastle scene since the early nineties. The new album has tracks that have been favourites over the years and a couple of previously unreleased new songs as well. It features their unique world-driven sound and captures the energy of their shows in the way that only a live recording can.

This tour sees them return

to the Newcastle Uni for a lunch time show at the Bar on the Hill. The last time they performed at the University, Floyd was attacked by an elderly female office worker wielding stationery. She thought they were playing way too loud and was quite upset.

Floyd is coming in this time without security but is promising to bring in a pack of earplugs to keep the peace.

leanor McEvoy is one of Ireland’s most accomplished female singer/songwriters.

fter a bravura turn at the recent CMC Rocks the Hunter festival Oz rock icon James Reyne will be returning to the region but, this time around, it will be a bit more of a subdued affair.

Reyne, along with Tracy and Brett Kingman, will be bringing his A Crawl To Now show to Lizotte’s – a stripped back affair that showcases the songwriters formidable catalogue, from his days with Australian Crawl and the short-lived supergoup Company of Strangers to his prolific solo output.

“CMC was just fantastic – we all loved it,” Reyne told TE. “But this show is a bit more stripped back – it’s basically a great cross-section of everything I’ve done. The backbone of the show is obviously going to be the hits, but the format also allows me to slip a few new ones in there now and then.”

There’s no denying that Reyne, both through his output with Australian Crawl (tracks like Beautiful People, Errol, Boys Light Up and Down Hearted are well and truly ensconced in the pantheon of classic Oz rock) and a prodigious solo career

Since Australian Crawl disbanded in 1986, Reyne has gone on to release an impressive thirteen studio albums, most notably his self titled debut that featured such hits as Fall of Rome, Hammerhead, Motor’s Too Fast, and Heaven on a Stick and 1991’s Electric Digger Dandy.

Not one to rest on any revisionist laurels, Reyne is still a prolific songwriter with his latest album Thirteen, released in 2012, gaining high praise from fans and critics alike.

“I’m very chuffed with how that album was received,” he said.

“I write a lot more now than I used to and I guess I’m a bit more relaxed about it - it’s nice to know that people get what I do.”

In a tacit acknowledgement that Australia “gets” what Reyne does, this year he became a Member of the Order of Australia for his services to the Australian music industry and various charities.

“I am really chuffed about all of that – I have no idea why they would pick me, but I’m chuffed nonetheless – although it is a bit of a worry because I am now part of the establishment –I’m not sure how I feel about being ‘the man’,” he laughed.”

Cherry bomb distinctive look into a career that has seen her grace numerous magazines and websites ever since.

In 2011, at the insistence of a friend, she launched her own YouTube channel that features content ranging from vintage hair and makeup tutorials, tips on how to be a pinup model and cooking. Although she said she hoped to convey a positive message to her ever-expanding audience.

“The one thing I want people to take away from the YouTube channel is that it doesn’t matter what you look like – if you’re fat, thin, in between, whatever – it’s all about being confident and comfortable in your own skin.”

So just what is it about the lure of vintage culture that has seen it explode in popularity in Australia over the past ten years?

“The style is just so classic,” she enthused.

“Also, for girls, it’s quite a modest style which, I think, makes quite a refreshing change from the kind of things you see on MTV.” Catch Cherry Dollface at the Pin Up Throwdown at the Cambridge Hotel on Saturday, April 5. hen it comes to the sartorial splendour of vintage 1950s style, few can hold a candle to American pin-up model and YouTube sensation Cherry Dollface.

Dollface, who is currently in the middle of a two-week promo tour presented by local purveyors of alt-couture Catfight Collections, has already made her presence felt at the Kurri Nostalgia Festival on the weekend and will be judging Newcastle’s first “pin-up” competition – the Pin Up Throwdown – at the Cambridge.

She will also be conducting 1950s'-styled hair and makeup tutorials at Charlestown Square.

“I’ve only been in town for like a day and I’m still pretty jet-lagged, but I think I’m already in love with Australia,” the affable Dollface told TE. “I’ve got a very busy schedule while I’m down here with the Nostalgia Festival, the Throwdown competition and the styling sessions, but it’s good to keep busy.”

Dollface, whose love of all things vintage was sparked when she started swing dancing at 14, began modelling in 2005 when a photographer snapped a photo of her that ended up on the cover of Ol’ Skool Rodz. She has since parlayed her

Weighing in somewhere between Queens of the Stoneage and CW Stoneking, the new tracks come from different sides of the spectrum. Borracho is classic Hay – with oodles of fuzzy funk while Run is an axe-grinding belter that makes the most of the full band sound. Speaking of the band, The Gentle Enemies, they are Ryan Van Gennip and Jon “Howler” Howell – the tight rhythm section that has worked together in various outfits including Chase the Sun, Marshall O’Kell and Cass Eager.
