If you like a bit of mind-numbing vacuousness with your cinematic fare, then this, rather pointless sequel should be just the ticket. The gals - Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha - are back but this time they’ve ditched Manhattan for Abu Dhabi, following Samantha’s movie-star ex. Much of the charm of the series and the original flick was the Manhattan setting and seeing how they cope in the desert in a pair of Manolo Blahnik’s is pointless.

If you loved the first instalment of the TV show reboot, then, you’ll more than likely be doubled over in laughter with this self-effacing and utterly hilarious sequel.

After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) when they go deep undercover at a local college. But when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team, and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their partnership. Now they don’t have to just crack the case they have to figure out if they can have a mature relationship.

When it comes to self-referential, introspective and bloody brilliant 90s acoustic pop, you simply can’t have the conversation without mentioning The Lemonheads.

With such songs as My Drug Buddy, It’s A Shame About Ray, Outdoor Type and a cracking cover of Mrs Robinson, these guys were at the top of the indie rock tree.

In recent years The Lemonheads have been in something of a state of flux, having released no new original studio material since 2006’s self-titled effort, but of late frontman Evan Dando has been holed back up in the studio with the likes of founding member and early co-songwriter Ben Deily (rejoining the ranks for the first time since 1989) and ex-bassist Juliana Hatfield (wellknown for her bountiful solo career).

This December, playing alongside accomplished local act Spookyland, The Lemonheads will bring us new music mixed in with the classics - it promises to be a special affair for long-term fans and newcomers alike.

TAYLOR SWIFT 1989 Out Now According to Taylor Swift, the title for her latest album, 1989, is a nod to all of the ground-breaking artists, Madonna and Annie Lennox for example, who were breaking down barriers and changing the musical goalpoasts in 1989, the year of Swift’s birth. Fair dues - but the inherent problem here is there is nothing remotely groundbreaking or even memorable about this twee collection of post teen pop.That’s not to say it’s a terrible album it’s actually quite a fun dance-pop outing that is sure to win her many more fans and send her stock soaring even higher.

It’s an album that revels in a teenageresque gossip - songs about boys she likes, boys she used to like et al. In short is musical confection of the highest order with very little substance. But at the end of the day, isn’t that what pop music is supposed to be about?

iven the fact that punk rock raconteur Henry Rollins has all but given up on musical projects, the fact that he appears (albeit in a spoken word capacity) on Mark of Cain’s latest single Grey 11, is testament to the respect the uncompromising Adelaide three piece still commands.

“It was really quite serendipitous,” bass player Kim Scott said of the collaboration.

“We were in the studio and [John] Stanier [drums] had gone home and we were adding some extra guitar and other overdubs. We heard that Hank was in town so, we called him up and, without hesitation he said, ‘I’m there’.

“So, he shows up and we didn’t play him the song, we didn’t show him any lyrics, just gave him a sense of the song, which is about coming back from a bad conflict and basically being betrayed by loved ones and Hank just nailed it in one take.”

The song in question is from Mark of Cain’s latest album Songs of the Third and Fifth - an album that, while a long time coming, 11 years in fact, has definitely been worth the wait with some pundits

Their brutal, off kilter wall of sound - that recalls an Antipodean Big Black or Shellac - is still well and truly untarnished.

Further, given that Rollins produced their Ill At Ease set - there’s definitely a sense of things coming full circle.

Scott said the album was plagued with challenges - both personal and pragmatic - such as the logistical challenges of the getting American drummer, John Stanier into the studio - no mean feat given that the former Helmet drummer also sits behind the kit for Tomahawk and Battles.

where Stanier said he thought it would never see the light of day - but here we are,” Scott said.

“It was a long time coming but, thankfully we have quite a hardcore fan- base who you’d best describe as ‘stayers’.”

Scott said that he believed the reason that the stayers were still staying was due to the band’s uncompromising attitude.

“There’s definitely no compromise with Mark of Cain and there never has been,” he said.

“We were always going to do what we want to do - John has never been interested in following trends in his writing or writing hooks.

“We’ve been accused of being a dictatorship and that is definitely the case - I mean the fact that we’ve had 14 drummers tells a take - but John has always had a very clear vision.”

While John Stanier’s other commitments will keep him away from the band’s current tour, his shoes will be more than ably filled by home- grown drummer, Eli Green.

“Anyone who knows our stuff knows it’s not the easiest to play drums to, so we thought it would be tough, to find someone. But Eli turns up and we asked him to play Tell Me and he pulls out this sheet music, and just nailed it.”

While I’ve long held the belief that Keanu Reeves peaked with Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure and has since turned in some of the most ham-fisted performances in cinematic history (Much Ado About Nothing anyone?), after seeing this hyper-violent neo-noir, I may have to rethink that assertion.

While the plot is extremely by the numbers and very predictable, the film’s execution is anything but with the film’s many action sequences filmed with a methodical precision rather than the frenzied Michael Bay jump cuts.

Wick is a one-time mafia hit man, who after the death of his wife from cancer, is left with only two things he cares about - his car and a puppy given to him by his wife. When thugs break into his house, beat him up, kill the dog and steal the car, he rage quits from reality and goes on a revenge-soaked killing spree leading him to the son of his former employer. The normally wooden Reeves brings a welcome stoicism to proceedings.

Adapted from director, Damien Chazelle’s own 2013 short, Whiplash centres on the turbulent relationship between shy, aspiring jazz drummer, Andrew (Miles Teller, Footloose and Divergent), and a teacher at his prestigious New York music School, Fletcher (J.K Simmons, Law & Order, the Closer).

In Fletcher, Chazelle has created a psychopath that would give Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction a run for her money.

Fletcher pushes Andrew beyond his limits, and then, pushes him some more, all in the pursuit of perfection.

Chazelle masterfully manipulates your emotions throughout the film. You feel Andrew’s esteem grow when he pleases his tyrannical tutor, and you experience the full weight when it all come crashing down at the wave of Fletcher’s hand. The same goes with Fletcher. Most of the time he’s bat-shit crazy but you can’t help but cling on to his rare moments of empathy.

True to its name, Whiplash is an emotional rollercoaster. But like any wild ride, in the end it will leave you thrilled.

Uptown is a pop/funk covers band from Newcastle, Australia. The band is renowned for their funfilled, energetic performances and exceptional musicianship.

Since mid-2012, Uptown have performed extensively in venues and clubs around NSW. They have also been one of the Hunter Valleys most popular acts to entertain weddings, birthday parties and , well, anything really.

Uptown features Eve Boyle as lead vocalist. Her versatility as a singer is put on display at every show as Uptown span a wide array of genres such as funk, R&B, pop, Motown and lounge.

Uptown’s rhythm section consists of Ben McCann on electric guitar, Ben Pittman on bass guitar, Chris English on keys and Brad Rheinberger on drums.

These in-demand session musicians and music educators are all formally trained in their field with each member completing a Bachelor of Music from The University of Newcastle.

With a set list that literally runs the gamut of popular music , there isn’t much that this versatile outfit cant do.

ot on the heels of his debut long player Startup Cult, hip- hop wunderkind will be heading to the Bar on the Hill tonight (Wednesday) as part of the Uni’s “Stress Less” preexam sessions.

Allday, aka Tom Gaynor, told TE that he was looking forward to the show given that it was his first headline show in our fair city.

“Yeah I’m really psyched,” he said.

“I’ve played in Newcastle before but I’ve never headlined so it will be cool to scratch that off the list.”

2014 has been a pretty big year for the rapper who first piqued the nation’s interest with such EPs as Loners Are Cool and A Skateboard Soiree with plaudits coming thick and fast for the album - the record, featuring the earworms Right Now and You Always Know the DJ, debuted at number three on the ARIA charts - as well as punters clambering to catch a peek of Allday in action.

“Yeah I’m really surprised with the reaction to the album because I’m not really out there buying music so I was a bit unsure to be honest,” he said.

“But this year has been really busy there’s been a couple of festival runs,

Allday said that while he was proud of his previous releases, he really wanted to step up his game for Startup Cult and judging by the slick production and bombastic beats, it’s definitely mission accomplished.

“I guess I wanted to be more of a perfectionist with this record,” he said.

“If I wasn’t happy with everything on a track I want to be able to go back and fix it - it was more about doing things for myself first.”

aving last performed in our region back in May with good mate Glenn Shorrock, there’s no denying that Newcastle is high on Brian Cadd’s touring agenda.

“I’ve said this so many times but Newcastle always provides crowds that just love their rock and roll - it’s a true rock and roll town - not just because of the fans but also because of the amount of talent the area has produced,” he told TE. Cadd, who as recently returned from Nashville where he has been laying some finishing touches of a new- soon- to- bereleased studio album, will be bringing a “greatest hits” show to Charlestown Bowling Club and, when your back catalogue stretches the breadth of Cadd’s (from hits with his 70 supergroup Axiom - Little Ray of Sunshine, Arkansas Grass - through to solo gems as Ginger Man and Every Mother’s Son), writing a set for a show such as this, can be a bit of a problem.

“Yeah, it can be a head scratcher which is a problem of a lot of artists my age- you just can’t fit everything in. I mean obviously you want to play your new stuff, and I’ll certainly be doing a few new songs, but there’d certainly be trouble if I didn’t play Ginger Man.”

BRIAN CADD CHARLESTOWN BOWLING CLUB THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 13 After his first notable outfit The Groop, who found fame with the track Woman You’re Breaking Me as well as being Russell Morris’ backup on his seminal The Real Thing, disbanded, he paired up with Shorrock (along with

Don Mudie (The Groop), Doug Lavery (The Valentines) and Chris Stockley (Cam- Pact) to form Australia’s first supergroup - Axiom - and while they only released two albums and disbanded two years later - they

became an integral part in the story of Australian rock and roll.

“Axiom was part of a movement that started around 1967 or 1968 in Australia where there was this great explosion of creativity,” Cadd explained. “Prior to that everything was a kind of a hybrid of what was coming out of America and England and then, all of a sudden at the end of the 1960s people started to strike out on their own and Australia began to rock so mightily with the sound of some truly original music and I’m glad that I was able to be a part of that.

“It wasn’t just music, either you saw it in the incredibly unique original film and television we were producing - it really was an incredible time.”

Fast forward a number of years and there isn’t too much of the industry Cadd hasn’t seen. He has penned songs for the likes of Joe Cocker, The Pointer Sisters and Bonnie Tyler, lend his soundtrack talents to the likes of Morning of the Earth, Alvin Purple and The Heartbreak Kid as well as sitting on the other side of the fence as a label head and A & R man, but it is the art of songwriting that has kept him so passionate for so many years.

“I never really saw songwriting as a tool to get into the hit parade,’ he said.

“For me, success was always in the song itself and writing is definitely what still keeps it all going.”

f boisterous power- pop, with more than a healthy dash of punk thrown in for good measure is your bag, then you’d do well to get to the Lass later this month to check out Fremantle- based three piece Axe Girl.

Featuring the talents of Jebediah rhythm section, Vanessa Thornton (bass) and Brett Mitchell (drums), Axe Girl is augmented by the sassy rock and roll swagger of London- bred frontwoman Addison Axe. The band are on the cusp of releasing their debut, self- titled long player and Axe said after receiving such positive feedback for the album’s teaser singles Give Me Your T- Shirt, Anamatronic and Silence, she was keen to see how punters would react to the rest of the album.

“If you’ve already heard our EP [Ghost Romance] or the singles, they’re a pretty good mission statement of what the album is about,” she said.

“We really are a live band and given that we have been playing quite a lot of late we all felt much more confident as a band going into this record - much more so than the EP where we were kind of still finding our feet.”

Despite only being a “thing” for around two years, Axe Girl certainly haven’t rested on their laurels , with two releases and snagging supports with the likes of

“I’m from London and I was in Perth a couple of years ago performing a show for the Fringe Festival,” she explained.

“I met Ness and we started jamming and then Brett came on board and next think I’ve moved from London to Perth to keep the band going - because we are just having so much fun.”

harlestown Bowling Club will be the scene of somewhat of a ‘nostalgia-palooza’ this month when Gold Cadillac, the Snape Brothers (pictured) and The Years team up for a night of rock solid fun with their Golden Years show.

Russell Snape of the Snape Brothers told TE that no musical stone would be left unturned as the three bands delve into all-killer, no-filler sets of solid gold classics.

“Yeah, it should be one hell of an entertaining night with arguably three of Newcastle’s most veteran bands,” Snape laughed.

“And we’ll be ploughing through almost four decades of great music. The Gold Cadillac guys do a lot of 50s and 60s stuff as well as some more modern stuff thrown in, and The Years, I understand that because they have a female singer they’ll be tacking a lot of female artists on the night and the Snape Brothers pretty much do everything in between.”

There’s no denying that, between them, these bands have more experience than most Newcastle bands have had hot dinners.

The Snape Brothers - Russell, Mick and Chris have been plying their trade in our fair city since the early eighties, in one form or another and, as Snape said, they have no plans to stop anytime soon.

“We just love what we do,” he said.

“I had a break for a couple of years but I
