Throughout an illustrious and wideranging musical career, Neil Diamond has charted 37 Top 10 singles and 16 Top 10 albums in the U.S and the lion’s share are included in this set.

Tracks like Cracklin’ Rosie, Forever in Blue Jeans, Song Sung Blue, Sweet Caroline, Holly Holy Red, Red Wine and Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon are sure to have you singing along with abandon and, if not, there’s a strong chance that you have no soul.

If you’re looking for a masterclass in songwriting, this is definitely a good place to start.

While this film from first-time director and acclaimed cinematographer Wally Pfister looks as slick as you’d expect and features a rather formidable cast, once you take away these bells and whistles this dystopian sci-fi is quite a muddled exercise.

The story follows AI boffiin Dr Will Caster (Depp) who is building a machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known and his experiments have gained the attention of anti-technologists who will do anything they can to stop him.

While some interesting concepts about AI, and singularity theory are thrown in here, for the most part a meandering script with very little action, drag this film down.

f, in the burgeoning UK punk scene of 1977, the Sex Pistols were the heart, the Clash were the conscience, then the Jam were definitely the brains.

hopefully this one will be even better.”

Foxton said while the Jam’s considerable back catalogue presented a few issues when writing a set-list these days, it was a good problem to have.

“Yeah, there are certain songs that you have to put in there, but the set does get changed very regularly - which keeps it fresh for both the band and the audience.”

Aside from the slew of Jam classics on offer, Foxton added that there would be a couple of tracks from his latest solo album, and first in 30 years (his last being 1984’s Touch Sensitive) - Back to the Room. The album represents somewhat of a mending of the fences between Foxton and Weller, who had reportedly not spoken for 20 years.

“It was amazing to work with Paul again - we had some really great times in the Jam but we had a falling out and sadly, it took the passing of my wife and his father (John Weller, who also managed the Jam) in 2009 to make us both realise that life is too short - I played on a couple of tracks on Paul’s last album Wake Up The Neighbours

and I also got up and played a song with him at the Royal Albert Hall for his fiftieth birthday and people just went mental,” he said.

“Our friendship is back on track now and going from strength to strength, which is just brilliant - I couldn’t be happier.”

Back To The Room, which also features the talents of Booker T and the MGs drummer Steve Cropper and Spandau Ballet sax player Steve Norman, is a stunning pop album with a few tracks, namely Window Shopping and Number Six, sounding as good as anything the Jam produced.

“Yeah, those two that you mentioned are definitely in the set at the moment,” he said.

“People have commented that if the Jam had stuck together, this is probably what it would’ve sounded like, which is a bloody huge compliment.”

Their debut LP, In The City, showcased a band that was able to capture the raw aggression and urgency of punk, thanks to the powerhouse rhythm section of bass player Bruce Foxton and drummer Rick Buckler, with a whip-smart pop sensibility and incisive lyricism from frontman Paul Weller, that recalled the likes of Ray Davies and Pete Townshend.

Cutting their teeth on what Foxton called the “social club circuit” with a much “mellower sound” in 1975/76, after Weller caught an early Sex Pistols gig at the legendary 100 Club, the true direction of the band began to take shape.

“It was such an exciting time - there was a sense that anything could happen and after Paul saw that Sex Pistols gig, all we wanted to do was break into that London pub circuit,” Foxton told TE. The Jam’s talent quickly eclipsed that of many of their upstart contemporaries and with subsequent albums, This Is The Modern World, All Mod Cons, Setting Sons, Sound Affects and The Gift, shifted into poppier and more soul oriented territory.

Since their break up in 1982, after which Weller went on to form The Style Council, the Jam’s legacy has only grown more potent. Their third record, All Mod Cons, featuring the genre defining Down in the Tube Station At Midnight, A-Bomb In Wardour Street, and Mr Clean, came in at number 50 in a Q Magazine list of the greatest 100 British albums of all time.

After the Jam split, Foxton and Buckler turned up in a number of bands, most notably Foxton’s 15-year stint as bass player for Irish punk legends Stiff Little Fingers, but the desire to continue playing those classic Jam songs still burned bright with Foxton and Buckler, despite Weller’s disinterest. Hence, From The Jam was born. Initially featuring Foxton and Buckler, along with Russell Hastings on vocals and guitar and David Moore on keyboards and guitar, From the Jam launched a mammoth tour, including Australia, in 2007 and proved just how much love there still is for The Jam. Now, with a line-up consisting of Foxton, Hastings and drummer Steve Barnard (Joe Strummer and the Mescalaros), From the Jam will be making a return Oz trip next year, with a special acoustic Newcastle show in the offing.

“We were down there three or four years ago and it was bloody brilliant,” Foxton said.

“Unfortunately the Jam never made it down to Australia, which is a real shame, but that first tour was just amazing and

After starting his career as a Triple J RAW finalist in 2004 with just three stand-up gigs under his belt, Okine’s comedy stock has risen dramatically with five hugely successful solo shows as well as stints overseas, especially at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where he grabbed a best newcomer nomination. Aside from standup and radio gigs, Okine has also proved equally adroit in the mediums of film and television with recent stints on the small screen in ABC1’s This is Littleton, Dirty Laundry Live, and a stint as host of SBS2’s soccer show, ThursdayFC and on the silver screen in such films as See No Evil and Aquamarine - just don’t ask him to pick a favourite medium.

“If I picked a favourite, I think I’d get pretty sick of that favourite pretty quickly,” he said.

“It’s kind of like when you are working out what you want for dinner, you learn to kind of trust your body to know what you want - so I’m fortunate that if I want to do some stand-up or if I want to make some crap hip-hop in my bedroom, that I can do that.”

Looking at his CV you’d be forgiven for thinking that Okine is a driven workaholic, however he said the driving force behind

f there’s one thing that radio personality, actor and all-round funnyman Matt Okine knows it’s that the world of show business is one that can be best described as full of swings and roundabouts.

“I’m actually speaking to you on a bus so I’m trying not to be too loud which kind of illustrates the highs and lows of the kind of job I do - earlier today I was taken out to lunch by a TV personality friend of mine who just scored a plumb new job on Channel Nine and now, here I am on public transport - peaks and valleys,” he said.

It seems though after taking on the Triple J breakfast slot with co-host Alex Dyson, that 2014 is a year with more peaks than valleys choice of transport notwithstanding.

Despite the early mornings, Okine is about to embark on a stand-up tour that will see him split sides at the Civic Playhouse and he said punters could expect a bit of a freewheeling experience.

“Well, basically the show is going to be around an hour of absolute hilarity that’s all about me,” Okine told TE. “This show is a bit different to shows that I would do at festivals where you’re bound by the tagline - you know, if the show is called

“Yeah man, a little while back, after I graduated from acting school, me and a friend were working in a call centre selling wine over the phone and we were just so f**king depressed about it,” he said.

“One day at lunch we decided that we needed to do something, anything other than sell wine - so basically everything I’ve done since has been so I can avoid telemarketing. If I can go through life drinking wine and not selling it over the phone, then I consider myself a success.”

Philip Seymour Hoffman passed away six months ago but the Academy Award winner’s final cinematic performance in Anton Corbijn’s A Most Wanted Man will likely bring the loss back to the surface for many movie-lovers.

This intense spy drama follows Günther Bachmann, a German security agent, and his Hamburg-based team as they attempt to track down a Chechen-Russian illegal immigrant who holds the key to snatching a wanted financier of international Islamic extremists groups.

Written by the same novelist who penned Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, A Most Wanted Man is not what you’d call a breezy watch.

The viewer knows what Bachmann knows, which means a lot of the time you’re left thinking, what the hell is going on. But this sense of being almost completely in the dark is exactly what gives the flick its edge.

Hoffman is emotionally-charged, tightly wound perfection.

When it comes to apocalyptic dramas, this bold flick from up and coming director Zac Hilditch is up there with John Hillcoat’s brilliant adaptation of the Cormac McCarthy novel The Road.

A meteorite has hit earth and a wave of fire is consuming pretty much everything, and Australia has roughly 12 hours on the clock. Society has pretty much broken down and self-obsessed James leaves his girlfriend in the lurch to spend his last hours on earth partying. On his way to the party to end all parties, James encounters a young girl, Rose, and saved her from a hideous fate. Rose is desperately searching for her father and James takes her under his wing, guiding her through this vicious, preapocolyptic landscape. With the unexpected burden of responsibility, James must reconnect with his humanity through Rose before it is taken away forever.

What it lacks in subtlety, These Final Hours definitely makes up for in tension, with Hilditch creating an ominous sense of claustrophobic tension right from the get-go.

Directed by the legendary Rob Reiner, And So It Goes tells the story of a self-absorbed realtor who enlists the help of his neighbour when he’s suddenly left in charge of the granddaughter he never knew existed until his estranged son drops her off at his home.

JEFF LAW’S FAMILY CHINESE RESTAURANT PELICAN RSL 1 PIRIWAL STREET, PELICAN (02)4971 2165 Accompanying both was the special fried rice ($7.50 small, $8.50 large) and tied both dishes together perfectly. With generous helpings of prawns, chicken and egg, this dish certainly lived up to its name.

You’d have to travel pretty far to find a Chinese restaurant that lives up to the quality of this one and with mains ranging from $10 to $20, you can’t argue with the price.

hen it comes to sumptuous Chinese fare, there are few who do it better than Jeff and Kerry Law at Pelican RSL. For the past 20 years, Jeff and Kerry have been tantalising local taste buds and their wealth of experience shines through in their extensive menu.

When I say extensive, I mean extensive.

Aside from a lunch menu that combines the best of Australian and Chinese fare (with no less than 25 dishes to choose from) the main menu, with some 74 dishes to take your fancy, you will definitely be spoiled for choice.

Upon arriving, my dining partner and I were greeted by the friendly wait-staff and, after agonising over the hefty menu for some time, decided on a couple of dishes that were, in a word, magnificent.

On Kerry’s suggestion, we decided to start with one of the restaurant’s most popular dishes, garlic cheese King prawns ($20) and as soon as this sizzling plate of deliciousness arrived, it was obvious why it is so popular.

Perfectly cooked and super fresh prawns were literally swimming in a heady cheesy, garlic sauce that was one of the most morish sauces I’ve had in recent memory - not too cheesy or too garlicy. While cheese doesn’t feature often on Chinese menus, this dish was an undisputed winner and definitely worth a sample.

Next up it was a tried and true Chinese classic - crispy beef with Peking sauce ($15.50) and Jeff and Kerry’s take on this beloved dish was out of this world. Just as the menu promised, the beef was cooked to crispy perfection and the traditionally sweet and savory Peking sauce was a paragon of balance.

fter piquing quite a bit of interest with their double A-side 7-inch Song For Bill Of The Trains/Dexamphetamine Blues, Melbourne based indie punks Have/Hold are back with a cracking new EP - Calm Your Blood and will be kicking off the EP tour in Newcastle this month.

“Yeah, Newcastle is the first show on the run so we’ll be very keen to blow the doors off that one,” singer and guitarist Luke Shields told TE. The band capped off 2013 in style being named as one of Blunt magazine’s

20 bands to watch in 2014. And it seems those wags were right with the band opening up for the likes of La Dispute, Balance And Composure and Lemuria already under their belt this year .

“Yeah, hearing stuff like that Blunt thing is great because this it was the first time in the life of this band that we’d had any real kudos like that,” Shields said.

Have/Hold have drawn favourable comparisons to artists as diverse as Fugazi and INXS and Shields said the new EP represents a much more focussed and collaborative approach, thanks to the new bass player Luke Smith.

“This EP is much more collaborative and I think the approach is a lot more direct,” Shields said.

“When I’m studying Elvis, I prefer to look at those old bootleg concerts where he was relaxed and obviously having so much fun with his audience. He was a real fun loving jokester onstage and that’s what I’m trying to get across with this show.”

hen it comes to the cult of personality surrounding rock and rollers, there are few who could even imagine the amount of fanbased fervour that surrounds the King of rock and roll Elvis Presley.

Some 37 years since his death, Elvis’ spirit well and truly lives on thanks to his mammoth back catalogue and countless impersonators keeping the flame alive.

Of those impersonators and tribute artists, Max Pellicano and his show Elvis to the Max definitely stands at the top of the pile. His recreation of Presley’s looks, moves, vocal style, impressions and humour is so accurate, its awe-inspiring.

Pellicano will be making yet another trip to the region later this month with his show Elvis to the Max: The Orchestral Sessions and Pellicano told TE that punters could expect a show that was as big in scope as an actual Presley concert.

ith bands like Muzzy Pep, the Great Dividing Range, the Tax-Sea Cabs and the Rodgers on their collective résumé, you can pretty well guarantee the debut self-titled release from Newcastle punk rock purveyors, the Grounds is going to be a ripsnorter of a record.

Laid down over two days at Rock the Nation Studios in Mayfield under the expert guidance of local producer par excellence, Geoff Mullard, the Grounds frontman Justan Saunders told TE that listeners could expect a real no bulls**t sound from the fourpiece’s first offering.

“It was really sort of in and out, one or two takes, making it as live as possible,” he said.

“We didn’t want to do any overdubs or any of that sort of crap because we wanted it to be as it sounds on the floor.

“There’s not very many bells and whistles, what you see is what you get - loud, loose and in your face.”

And from the sounds of it, punters will be getting a heavy dose of that same no frills energy when the Grounds launch the record at the Hammo later this month, alongside Worstmn, Horse Bolted and a re-formed Tax-Sea Cabs.

iven that he was only in our part of the world in January, celebrating the 10th anniversary of his breakout album Feeler, the fact that Pete Murray is heading back our way for two shows - with one already sold out - is testament to the fact that there is a heck of a lot of love in these parts for the So Beautiful singer.

Murray’s story is an unlikely one - a promising athlete and rugby star turns a career stopping injury into an opportunity to become a singer; initially selling CD’s out of his Kombi van and ultimately landing a worldwide record deal. This was followed by 12 ARIA Award nominations, sales of over a million albums, and playing to passionate audiences in Australasia, North America, Europe and South America.

Last year Pete Murray re-released his definitive album Feeler as a special 10 year anniversary edition, re-mastered at the legendary Abbey Road Studios.

He then toured the country to sold out crowds.

While Murray was a relative newcomer to the world of music, first picking up the guitar at age 22, while pursuing a career in sports medicine, he has definitely taken to the singer-songwriter thing like the proverbial duck to water with subsequent albums See The Sun and Blue Sky
