KRISTIN HERSH Friday, June 6 Factory Theatre, Marrickville Throwing Muses frontwoman Kristin Hersh is returning to Sydney for the first time in seven years for her intimate Words & Music show featuring her unique stories stories and powerfully emotional songs.

After founding the influential art-punk band Throwing Muses, at age 14, Kristin Hersh went on to spend the next 25 years confounding expectations and breaking rules - her own and others.

Her solo-mostly-acoustic career spun off in 1994 and has lived in parallel to the Muses.

Her first solo release, Hips and Makers was widely acclaimed and since, Hersh has released a steady stream of solid and distinctly individual solo albums.

However, her latest work of passion is her beloved band, Throwing Muses’ epic work, Purgatory / Paradise.

An entirely listener-funded recording, written and demoed in public and in full conversation with the audience meant to consume it, the project was published as a hardcover art book with a CD mounted inside 60 pages of photos, lyrics and narrative prose.

Sure, it is debauched and the majority of its characters devoid of any moral compass, but Martin Scorsese’s biopic of the life of nefarious stockbroker Jordan Belfort, could just be the iconic director’s magnum opus.

Based on Belfort’s book of the same name, The Wolf of Wall Street charts Belfort’s rise from a Long Island penny stockbroker to becoming the founder of his own firm, Stratton Oakmont. Along the way, Belfort was involved in a massive securities scam that involved widespread corruption on Wall Street.

Leonardo DiCaprio is brilliant as the amoral Belfort but, Jonah Hill threatens to steal the show as Belfort’s partner-in-crime Donnie Azoff.

THE PIXIES INDIE CINDY Out Now While there are flashes of the Pixies of old on their first studio album in 23 years - Indie Cindy never lives up to the skewed indiepop brilliance of albums like Surfa Rosa and Doolittle.

While Frank Black is in fine caterwauling form and Joey Santiago is still bringing those slinky, snakey guitar lines, the absence of original bass wielder Kim Deal is noticeably absent.

In fact, this kind of sounds like a side project of Frank Black, Joey Santiago and David Lovering, rather than a Pixies record.

Their heavier, rockier moments kind of come of sounding like a band trying to do the Pixies, yet it is in the quieter moments such as the standout Greens and Blues where this album truly shines.

This is by no stretch of the imagination a bad record, but definitely not the best in the Pixies formidable indie-rock canon.

While the M ushroom R ecords founder said he always had faith that rescheduled dates w ere alwa ys on the c ards, the last mon th had been “torturous” for all involved.

“I alwa ys had grea t fai th tha t the tour would be rescheduled, but, when y ou’re dealing w ith such tragic c ircumstances, it’s just a matter of patience.

“There is definitely a sense of relief , but it really is a kind of ‘ fat lady sin gs’ situation - I don’t really think it will be possible to fully relax un til they walk offstag e in Auckland [the last show of the tour].”

Gudinski said that, when the opportunity arose for e xtra da tes in the rescheduled tour, the Hunter Valley was high on the list due largely to the success of tours such as Bruce Springsteen, earlier this year.

“Those Hunter Springsteen shows were great - i t’s such a g ood v enue and w ith plenty of room for the Stones to set up their full produc tion,” he said. “When you’re g etting ac ts of the c alibre of the Stones - I mean just look at their catalogue, it’s just hit after hit after hit - it’s only going to open the door for more hug e ac ts to want to come and play in the Hunter.”

While the logistic s of brinin g one of the largest bands on the planet are alwa ys going to be mind bogglin g, Gudinski remained philosophical.

“It certainly has been a lon g road but, hey, it’s only rock and roll, but I like it.”

eparately, w ith son gs lik e Ginger M an, E very M other’s Son, Reminiscing, Cool Change and Help Is On the Way - Brian Cadd and Glenn Shorrock are icons of the A ustralian music industr y.

Together, though, they c reate something truly special.

Cadd and Shorrock ( who w ent on to become a global sensa tion as f rontman for the Li ttle Ri ver B and) first started collaborating in 1969 in what was dubbed Australia’s first “ supergroup”, Axiom - best kno wn for such iconic tracks as Arkansas Grass and Little Ray of Sunshine - and i t is a music al f riendship tha t has stood strong ever since - lon ger than a lot of marriages.

“We started out in our twenties or thereabouts and we really did evolve together,” Cadd told TE. “We met during a period in both our lives where we were learning about songwriting and performing and when you go through that together, it g ives me a g reat sense of confidence on stage, knowing that the guy next to me is completely on the same page as me.”

Cadd and Shorrock w ill be hi tting the Hunter for a run of dates this week with a sho w, dubbed, The S tory o f Sharky and the Caddman (named after an album featuring reworkings of their respective and collec tive son gbooks, released last y ear) and C add said the Hunter region was alwa ys high on his tour agenda.

When C add’s outfi t The Groop disbanded in 196 9 he paired up w ith Shorrock (along with Don Mudie (The Groop), Doug Lavery (The Valentines) and Chris Stockley (Cam-Pact) to form Australia’s first super group - Axiom - and while they only released tw o albums and disbanded two years later

- they became an integral part in the story of Australian rock and roll.

“Axiom was part of a mo vement tha t started around 1967 or 1968 in A ustralia where there was this grea t e xplosion of creativity,” Cadd explained. “Prior to tha t everything was a kind of a h ybrid of what was coming out of Americ a and En gland and then, all of a sud den Australia began to rock so mightily with the sound of some truly original music and I’m glad that I was able to be a part of that.”

Fast for ward a number of y ears and there isn’t too much of the industr y Cadd hasn’t seen. H e has penned son gs for the likes of Joe Cocker, The Pointer Sisters and Bonnie Tyler, lend his soundtrack talen ts to the likes of Morning of the Earth, Alvin Purple and The Heartbreak Kid as well as sitting on the other side of the fence as a label head, but i t is the art of son gwriting that has kept him so passionate.

“I never really saw songwriting as a tool to get myself into the hit parade,’ he said. “For me success was always in the song itself and it is writing that first ignited my passion and definitely what still keeps it going.”

iven that their latest album, H a r l e q u i n D r e a m , was released in August last year, you’d t hink t hat a lbum’s cycle w ould b e ne aring i t’s end a nd B oy a nd B ear w ould b e re ady to s tart t he pro cess a gain w ith a lbum number three.

However, as testament to the beautifully realised driving folk-rock album, it seems Australia a nd no w E urope a nd t he US won’t let Harlequin Dream go.

Having completed a n ational tour at the end of l ast y ear, t he b and h ave re cently finished a m ammoth 3 2- date t our of Europe a nd t he US (i ncluding a s tint a t SXSW) and, with nary time to put their feet up, they’re heading back out on Aussie roads again, this time taking in more regional centres.

Frontman, D ave H osking t old TE th at, while the band’s schedule had been quite daunting of l ate, it was a good problem to have.

“Yeah it has been a little busy, but I guess that’s nice,” he laughed.

“It’s a ll a bout p acing y ourself on t ours

like t his - y ou c an’t get t oo e xcited or you’re definitely going to come unstuck.

“You really do have to stay kind of disciplined or else you could lose your sanity.”

After f irst pi quing t he n ation’s i nterest with th eir d ebut Moonfire, wh ich d rew favourable c omparisons t o t he l ikes of Fleet Foxes for its atmospheric and moody folk p op a nd e nded u p g oing pl atinum -

The a lbum de buted a t n umber one on the A RIA c harts u pon re lease a nd h as gone on to sell upwards of 35,000 copies in Australia.

While H osking s aid t here w as a s ense of p ressure su rrounding t he Moonfire sessions it was more about pressure placed

on themselves rather than any weight of expectation from external forces.

“It’s been absolutely fantastic how people have welcomed the album,” he said.

“Everyone t alks a bout t hat d readed second album syndrome so it’s nice to have avoided that in some ways.

“I me an, t here’s a lways pre ssure w ith any a lbum y ou do bu t I’ d s ay t hat t here was more s urrounding t he f irst a lbum.

With Moonfire it w as more a bout u s putting pressure on ou rselves to raise the bar c reatively a lso, t his t ime a round w e are a little wiser and it always helps to have someone l ike W ayne C onolly pro ducing your album.”

Hosking s aid t hat Conolly - t he erstwhile axeman f or S ydney in die- rockers T he Welcome Mat and Kinievel and producer of albums for the likes of You Am I, The Fauves, Died P retty a nd S arah Bl asko, broug ht a sense of ease to the sessions that more than came through on the finished product.

“Wayne i s just such a chiller - the k ind of guy you really want to hang out with,” Hosking said. “Aside from that, he’s also a bit of a subtle genius who really knew how to get t he b est p erformances f rom a ll of us - our cultural stars definitely aligned.”

The dream continues.

hile South Africa might not be the first coun try tha t comes to mind when discussing hiphop, that is set to chance when one of the country’s most successful independen t hip- hop outfi ts, PHF AT, hi t New castle next week.

With sev eral y ears of successful touring, three independen t releases Dinosaur B lood, Y ou A re Going T o Die and Happiness Machines, and more than 300 shows performed in S outh Africa to date - PHFAT’s history reads as a v eritable climbin g of the lad der of the S outh African Music scene.

In the tw o years that PHFAT has been a full time rap ac t they ha ve pla yed a t just about ev ery established alterna tive music festival in the country.

While this is impressi ve on paper , PHFAT’s proudest asset is their abili ty

Their ability to consistently output new and original music combined w ith their seemingly unendin g supply of ener gy and immac ulate professional decor um indicates that PHFAT has no intention of slowing down.

Tucked a way in the Stockland shopping centre a t Glendale, w ith ample parking on i ts doorstep, Outback J acks is a family- friendly steakhouse w ith Aussie flare and bloody good steak!

To kick off the nigh t w e or dered up some garlic prawns and calamari from the outback- inspired menu, bec ause w e all know we Aussies love our seafood. Meaty and tender, the prawns were smothered in a rich, buttery garlic sauce and served on a bed of rice in their own ceramic mini camp oven! Even the bush pepper c alamari had an outback tw ist - sliced and scored to look lik e li ttle c roc tails and moreish to boot. We hadn’t even finished our entrées before out mains arri ved on the table that’s another g ood thin g about OBJ s, the service is lightning fast. On extremely positive recommendation I tried the pork ribs. Slo w cook ed in sticky J ack Daniels whiskey glaze and smok ey sauce these babies w ere fallin g- off- the- bone tender .

As one w ould expect, the OBJ menu has more steak than y ou c an pok e a stick at - porterhouse, both an gus and wag yu, prime rib on the bone, three varieties of grainfed rump, t-bone, eye filet, whatever your poison, chances are they ’ve got it on the menu. After much considera tion, my dining partner opted for the angus porterhouse, medium rare w ith mushroom sauce. It was cooked to perfection. Simple as tha t. And wha t bet ter side dish for a steak than its traditional Aussie barbeque playmate - salad and slaw.

As good as the food was, I have to say the standout offering of our nigh t at Outback

Hotel on S eptember 19 , 1979 – the nigh t of the infamous Star Hotel riot, one of the biggest in Australian history.

“Yeah the Star H otel sho w brough t us a fair amoun t of notoriety and w e w ere actually signed to Alberts on the stren gth of it,” Tinson explained.

The band ’s rela tionship w ith the label yielded a self- ti tled album w ith the singles Baby’s Had a Taste/Waiting for You and The Star and t he Slaughter/End of the Road. Both singles made the loc al top ten while the album hit number one.

Since c alling it a da y, all members ha ve remained ac tive in the music scene (Tinson and S creen ha ve been seen in Swanee line-ups as well as The Tex Pistols while De Jong and Porteus have played in such acts as The H eartfelt Rodneys, Cool Factor, Djan go W rango, and The Smarts ) however Tinson said tha t the time ma y well and truly be right for more Heroes.

“After the show, we are planning to work on a new album, so we’ll just see how it all goes.”

ven if y ou only displa yed a passin g fancy for the fec und New castle music scene in the la te 1970s and early 80s there’s a pretty solid chance tha t you would be familiar with The Heroes.

Formed f rom the ashes of glam- rock outfit Rabbi t in 197 7, and fea turing the talents of Mark Tinson on gui tar, Phil Screen on drums, Jim Porteus on bass and Pete D e J ong on gui tar and v ocals, The Heroes became one of the most formidable live acts on the Newcastle scene. They were also one of the first Newcastle acts to make an impression further afield, signing to the iconic S ydney label Albert P roductions.

Now, some 32 y ears after they brok e up, The H eroes are hi tting the stag e once again for a show at Wests Cardiff. Dubbed The Heroes and Legends, the show will also feature fellow Novocastrian “legends” Dai Pritchard (Rose Tattoo) and Grant Walmsley (Screaming Jets).

“It’s g oing to be a lot of fun, ” gui tarist Mark Tinson told TE. “We’re really enjo ying pla ying tog ether now and the sho w w ill also be a grea t chance to g et tog ether w ith some ol d friends.”

As music scribe Murray Engleheart said - “Nunchukka Superfly is from the sort of sonic place The Stooges were heading towards on the Funhouse album before bathroom floors and clinical psych assessments got in the way.”

ou migh t think tha t four y ears is a rela tively lon g time betw een drinks when i t comes to albums, but don’t go thinking that Muswellbrook’s The Dennis Boys Band.

While their debut lon g pla yer No Stor y To T ell was released in 2010 , the bo ys have been working on its follow-up, basically ev er since. No w the f ruits of those labours, Up All Night, is set to be launched at the L ass this w eekend and bass pla yer Erle D ennis tol d TE tha t the e xcitement was palpable.

“Yeah i t’s defini tely v ery e xciting to be finally releasing the album,” he said.

“After we finished recor ding No Story to Tell, w e pret ty much w ent straigh t back into the studio [Sydney’s Glebe Studios]

to work on this current batch of songs and we’ve basically been tink ering away on i t ever since.”

While the Dennis Boys’ raison d’etre has always been coun try ( but tempered w ith a ref reshingly modern edg e dev oid of the trappings of U S FM coun try rock and helped along by guitarist Lyle Dennis’ face melting f retwork), this time around, the band have delved into much deeper sonic territory, w ith ev en more f lourishes of punk, reggae and rock and roll.

“Lyle and I produced the album and, this time around, bec ause we were more used to w orking in a studio , I’ d sa y w e were much more e xperimental, lookin g at differen t sounds and arran gements which have made for a much fuller album, I think,” he said.

With the album done and dusted, Dennis said the plan was to tak e the show on the road once the LP had been ser viced to radio, but for now they will continue doing

what they do best - w owing New castle audiences w ith their amorphous thumping country sound.

“At the L ass sho w, w e’ll be pla ying the album in i ts en tirety, which is a bi t of a challenge in i tself, and w e’ll ha ve a few guests there on the nigh t who whelped
