Allman founded the Allman Brothers Band in 1969 with his brother Duane, Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks and Jai Johanny Johanson. The band’s first three albums – The Allman Brothers Band, Idlewild South and At Fillmore East were huge hits that made their unique fusion of country, blues and rock, a national sensation. In his solo career, Allman has recorded seven albums including Low Country Blues his first recording in more than 13 years. Produced by T Bone Burnett, the album finds Allman putting his own stamp on songs by some of the blues giants whose work has long informed his own, from Muddy Waters and BB King to Buddy Guy and Magic Sam.

The Kaiser Chiefs, those darlings of the mid-noughties UK guitar rock explosion (The Zutons, Fratellis, The Kooks et al) are back with album number five and while there’s some gold contained within, you get the feeling it’s all been done before.

Beginning with the rousing Factory Gates – a track that wouldn’t have seemed out of place on earlier releases Employment and Yours Truly, Angry Mob, this album isn’t interested in breaking new ground. Even the title – taken from a 2007 Tony Blair quote – is evidence of this.

Lyrically, there is an all-pervasive sense of dissatisfaction with modern-day Britain, but unlike the work of people like Joe Strummer, this comes off as sounding like bourgeois whining. Standouts include the arena-worthy Ruffians on Parade and the melodic, yet driving, Misery Company.

Silliness and low-brow comedy are the order of the day in this muchanticipated sequel to Will Ferrell’s hilarious Anchorman.

Having left San Diego for New York City, Ron Burgundy (Ferrell) is living the high life with wife Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate) and son Walter Burgundy. But, when Ron is fired and Veronica promoted to lead anchor, everything changes. Back in San Diego, Ron is working at Sea World. His shot at redemption comes via the Global News Network 24-hour news channel.

Ron reunites the team of Champ (David Koechner), Brick (Steve Carell), and Brian (Paul Rudd). Not as funny as the original but rather chuckleworthy nonetheless.

ot on the heels of their latest single – the pure pop barnstormer Goodbye Future – Aussie electro duo par excellence The Presets are set to melt a few faces with a massive show at the upcoming Groovin the Moo festival in Maitland later this month.

“This show is going to be freaking huge,” an enthusiastic Kim Moyes told TE. “We’ve been working on a completely new show over the last couple of weeks and we’ve reworked a lot of our older stuff, we’ll also be using all live electronics, our lighting guy is putting together a whole new lighting rig and there’ll be a new visual component with a bunch of visuals custom-made for the show.”

Phew.

Aside from the upcoming festival run, it’s proving to be quite a massive year for the My People duo, having signed on for an ambitious collaboration with Richard Tognetti and the Australian Chamber Orchestra called Timeline - a show dubbed “a sonic and visual journey that traces the evolution of music – from the dawn of time to now.”

“It is an ambitious project, but Julian and I have always tried to push ourselves creatively and this one is definitely a challenge," Moyes said.

“It’s all about discovering what has shaped music since the first known instances of recorded music - it’s quite broad and there is a lot to get through but we’re really happy to be a part of it – it’s going to be an amazing experience.”

With their impossibly catchy fusion of dance, techno and a decent helping of rock and roll swagger, The Presets, thanks to an ever-expanding live show and the hit-laden albums Apocalypso and Pacifica, The Presets were well and truly at the forefront of the early-noughties Aussie dance music explosion. Seven ARIAs are hard to argue with. Now in their tenth year, the boys are showing no signs of slowing down, with more singles and a shedload of touring slated for the rest of 2014.

“First and foremost, it’s all about making banging music that people can let loose to and get lost in,” Moyes said.

“We’ll keep doing it for as long as we can maintain those energy levels.

“But just the fact that we have managed to carve out a place in the music scene and are allowed to keep doing this is the best reward.”

The Presets play Groovin the Moo on Saturday, April 26.

Songwriting icon comes to town

W

hen it comes to evocative songwriters, with such iconic tracks as Khe Sanh, Flame Trees and Breakfast at Sweethearts under his belt, Don Walker is at the top of the tree.

Through his work with Cold Chisel, Tex Don and Charlie and his solo output Don Walker has become a giant in the Australian music scene. Now, Walker will be heading our way to share some insights into his musical life as well as playing a selection of his own songs, including tracks from his latest album Hully Gully, for an intimate dinner and show, hosted

by MC Andrew Coorey.

An Evening with Don Walker is on at the Cooks Hill Hotel on Thursday, April 10.

f the epic swagger of heavy 70s’ inspired stoner rock make your hair stand on end, then you’ll be pleased to know that Brisbane three-piece Greenthief are coming to town.

Hot on the heels of their blistering debut long player, Voyage, the boys are swinging by the Great Northern this week as part of a mammoth 21-date national tour.

“The tour is going really well at the moment,” frontman Julian Schweitzer told TE down the line from Western Australia.

“It’s great to be out on the road playing these new songs, and even better that people seem to dig it.”

Since releasing their debut EP, Anicca in 2008, Greenthief have never been a band to shy away from the road. Aside from considerable time spent on Australian roads, the band have already started making inroads abroad with a 20-date 2013 European tour piquing quite a bit of interest from the continentals. In fact, given the band wanted to capture the energy that exists on stage, they went into the studio fresh from the road.

“We did the recording on the back of

Greenthief Great Northern Thursday, April 10 a big national tour – we supported the Butterfly Effect at the end of 2012,” he said.

“We wanted to go straight into the studio right at the very end of the tour so we planned a recording session literally a couple of days after the tour ended.

The idea was that we’d be really tight as a band and more able to get a good live energy happening.”

To assist in brining out the live vibe and in making those drum sounds and bass

tones so massive, the band employed the services of producer Steve James (Sex Pistols, The Jam, The Angels) and the mixing talents of Lindsay Gravina (The Living End, Violent Soho).

“We worked with Steve on our last EP [Retribution] so it was good to have him back again,’ he said.

“He is just brilliant at reworking things to make them more concise and just getting a really massive sound which is what we were after.”

The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune – all against the back-drop of a suddenly and dramatically chancing Continent. Edward Norton, Adrian Brody, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Murray star.

Given my long association with those humble little Danish building blocks, I met the announcement of the Lego Movie with a due sense of anticipation and trepidation.

Could this film possibly live up to the expectations of an eight-year-old me who spent quite a bit of time invested in the stories of various Lego worlds of my own creation?

The answer is a resounding yes.

The story follows everyman or every mini-figure Emmett( voiced by Parks and Recreation’s Chris Pratt) who is living life strictly according to the “instructions”. Everything is going swimmingly for Bricktown’s most obedient construction worker until he is identified, via a prophecy form the ancient sage Vetruvius (Morgan Freeman), as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the whole Lego universe from the evil tyrant President Business (Will Ferrell). President Business, or Lord Business as he is also known, is hell bent on making the denizens of the Lego universe stick rigidly to the instructions, and in a ploy to stifle any creativity and imagination, plans to glue the world together with his secret weapon The Kraggle.

While the plot is pedestrian enough, it is what the filmmakers hang off the plot that make this film truly engaging. Oodles of multi-levelled social satire, self-referential gags (from the denizens of Bricktown living life by “instructions” identical to those we use to build the actual sets to self effacing gags about passé 80s Lego) lashings of razor sharp wit that appeals to both the kids and

the grown-ups, and thornier questions about the nature of our very existence, makes this a truly engaging and remarkable film. Factor in appearances from the likes of Batman, Superman, The Green Lantern, Dumbledore, Gandalf, Han Solo, Shaquille O’Neill and Millhouse, this is a glorious pop culture gumbo that would make Matt Groening squirm. While this film could have been a vacuous $60 million advertisement for the iconic brand (and in some ways it is), there is enough heart, humour and sheer unabashed joy to make this so much more than brand management.

W

hen it comes to albums, twenty years is a long time between drinks by anyone’s standards.

Listening to rockers the Baby Animals’ brilliant return to the spotlight, This Is Not The End, however, it feels as though the band never went away.

It seems Australia agrees. The band are currently in the middle of the second leg of their Feed the Birds tour – so named after the infamous tradition of frontwoman Suze DeMarchi poring red wine into the mouths of eager punters, from her own – and DeMarchi said Newcastle punters could expect a night of rampedup rock and roll excitement.

“We always love playing for your guys and last time was just awesome,” she said.

“Also, we’ll be wrapping up the tour there so we will definitely be keen to see it all of with a bang, so Newcastle better get ready.”

DeMarchi said that after releasing an acoustic album of their greatest hits - Íl Grande Silenzio in 2008 it had always been in the back of the unabashed “rock chick’s” mind to ramp things up again with the Baby Animals with the modus operandi to get in the studio and crank

out a barnstorming rock and roll record.

“I must say first of all that we are surprised and humbled by the reaction the album has been getting since we released it,” she said.

“While we may have felt a bit of pressure to recreate what we did on Shaved and Dangerous and the first album, but it was more about getting our heads down and bums up in the studio. It was really all about making a four on the floor rock album and I really hope we succeeded.”

There’s no denying that, with DeMarchi’s effortless rock swagger and such hits as Early Warning, Rush You and One Word under their belts, the Baby Animals, quite rightly earned a place in the pantheon of Aussie rock music, however, when asked about her and her band’s place in Aussie music history, DeMarchi remained philosophical.

“It is quite hard to work out what it is about the band that clicked, but If I had to guess, I’d say it was the melody and just the undeniable chemistry that we created when we were in a room together,” she said.

“Also, we’ve got Dario [Bortolin – bass] and Mick [Skelton – drums] in the band now and aside from being great players they’re great mates who Dave [Leslieguitar] get on with so well – we’re all having an absolute ball at the moment.”

For mains, my dining partner feasted on drunken duck – crispy skinned duck breast supreme with an orange liquor, which he assured me, with a mouthful of tender meat, was amazing – while I opted for the beef braciole – sirloin blanketed in crisp prosciutto and stuffed with parsley and pine nuts. Both came with chat potatoes and fresh green vegetables, cooked until just tender.

For the kinds of dishes you are not likely to find on other pub menus, Whoo’s a la carte can’t be beat. But there are plenty of old favourites to keep the less adventurous diner satisfied. Thai beef and Caesar salads, a variety of steaks, lamb cutlets and chicken schnitzel are all available as well as a range of kids meals for just $8.50.

Offering modern Australian cuisine on their delicious a la carte menu, as well as a range of pub classics, Whoo’s on Beaumont have recently taken up residency in the Hammo kitchen and are already creating a buzz about town.

It was on very positive recommendation from friends that my dining partner and I popped in to Whoo’s for a quiet Sunday night meal.

After being warmly welcomed by wait staff and head chef, Brett, we took a seat to peruse the menu.

Expecting the standard steak and veg, chicken schnitzel, and fish and chips, I was genuinely surprised by the range of flavours on offer – macadamia chicken with mango cream sauce, char grilled pork fillet drizzled with a honey mustard and sage sauce, prawns and bacon spaghetti finished with chili oil – this certainly wasn’t bog-standard pub grub. I wanted almost everything on the menu!

We started off with a couple of seafood dishes for entrée – salt and pepper squid and garlic prawns. Our waitress returned, what seemed like only moments later, with a generous helping of squid that tasted just how squid should – fresh, light and clean, served on a bed of peppery rocket with a simple wedge of lime for an extra bit of tang. This dish was proof that sometimes all you need are quality ingredients and a chef who knows how to use them to create a mouthwatering dish. For me, the garlic prawns were the highlight of the night. Noholds-barred decadence was the only way to describe the sauce these shrimp were swimming in. Thick, buttery with a mellow hum of garlic – a real indulgence.

ne of Disney’s best-loved musicals, The AristoCats will be brought to life by Opera Hunter this month. Based on the classic 1970 film, this musical promises to be an absolute showstopper for the young and the young at heart. Directed by Joanna Andrew, The AristoCats will see 30 of the region’s best young talents bring this jazzy extravaganza to life. Retired madame Adelaide Bonfamille enjoys the good life in her Paris villa with an even classier cat, Duchess and three kittens - pianist Berlioz, painter Toulouse and sanctimonious Marie.

When loyal butler Edgar overhears her will leaves everything to the cats until their death, he kidnaps them.

Crafty stray Thomas O'Malley takes them under his wing but Edgar tries to cover his tracks and catch them but more animals turn on him, from the cart horse Frou-Frou to the tame mouse Roquefort.

Opera Hunter’s The AristoCats will be on at the Lake Macquarie Performing Arts Centre on April 22, 23, 24 and 26 (2pm and 6pm) and at the Wesley Centre, Hamilton on April 27 (2pm and 6pm). fter winning his way into the hearts and minds of tiny tots everywhere (and quite a few grown-ups) as the yellow Wiggle, children’s entertainer Sam Moran certainly hasn’t slowed down.

Since his departure from the Wiggles in 2012, Moran has continued to cut a swathe through the cutthroat world of kids’ entertainment with his Nick Jr. TV series Play Along With Sam and subsequent album of the same name picking up various award nominations such as best children’s album at last year’s ARIA’s and a best-presenter nomination at this year's Logies. The album also debuted at number 1 on the iTunes children’s charts and at number 10 internationally.

Moran will be in town this month with his Play Along With Sam: Sam’s Animal Adventure show and he promised a funfilled musical adventure.

“It’s such a fun show,” the affable Moran told TE. “We’ll be doing a lot of songs from the show that kids should be familiar with and I’ll be introducing my furry friends the Bam Bam Binos who help me search for my lost sound jars. There’s also quite a bit of audience participation as well so the kids are also part of the Bam Bam Binos as well.”

There’s no doubt that children can be the harshest critics, but for Moran, being able to connect with kids on their level was a pretty hard thing to pass up.

“Yeah, kids can be merciless – it’s not like an adult audience who, if they don’t

like what you’re doing, will at least try to be polite – kids will just walk away if they’re not interested,” he laughed. “But, just being able to see the world through a child’s eyes is pretty fantastic.”

Moran, who became a parent in 2010, said that while fatherhood hasn’t necessarily changed the way he approaches his work, it has given him a new-found appreciation for the parents.

“I certainly have a much greater appreciation of what parents have to go through coming to shows like this – you know organising the kids, getting them in the car and to the show – it can be very exhausting – which is why I’ve tried to include things in the show that the parents can appreciate as well.”

Moran, who parted ways with the Wiggles in 2012, said he was still blown away from the amount of well-wishing messages he has received from Wigglers fans across the globe.

“When you’re involved in something like The Wiggles, it’s hard to get perspective on anything because it’s really like living in a bubble,” he said. “But I still get the most amazing messages of support from all around the world which is just mind-blowing.”

fter a hugely successful Australian tour last year with The Festival of Russian Ballet, the Imperial Russian Ballet is heading back to Newcastle this month with a flamboyant and festive production of a giant in Russian Ballet – Don Quixote.

Principal dancers Nariman Bekzhanov and Lina Seveliova told TE the company was over the moon at the prospect of returning Down Under.

“We really cannot wait because we really like the Australian audience – very warm and welcoming,” Seveliova said.

“Yes, and Australian nature – the kangaroos and crocodiles are very exciting,” Bekzhanov added.

First performed in Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre in 1869, Don Quixote has gone on to become one of the most recognised ballets in the world – having been performed thousands of times by both Russian and international ballet companies.

The story revolves around Don Quixote, a retired gentleman who is travelling the roads of Spain searching for glory and grand adventure. Accompanying him is a somewhat bewildered labourer named Sancho Panza who he has persuaded to accompany him as his faithful squire. In

return, Don Quixote promises to make Sancho the wealthy governor of an island.

Don Quixote gives up food, shelter and comfort all in the name of a peasant woman Dulcinea del Toboso who he envisions as a princess.

Seveliova, who plays Kitri, the inn-keeper’s daughter, said she was drawn to the ballet because of it’s farcical and comedic tone.

“My character works in a tavern helping her father and is a really fun girl and the public really likes her,” she said.

“But we all joke around quite a bit during the ballet because it is quite comical and there are a lot of light-hearted relationships.”

Formed in 1994 by former Bolshoi Ballet soloist Gediminas Teranda, the Imperial Russian Ballet have staged masterpieces in the iconic Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and the Mossovet Theatre. Bekzhanov, whose technique has been likened to that of Rudolph Nureyev, said he had learned a lot under his mentor.

“Gediminas teaches us to work hard to reach for our goals,” he said.

“He is very thoughtful about certain traditions and rules in ballet and I feel he has taught me a lot about ballet’s traditions.”

The Russian Imperial Ballet’s Don Quixote will be on at the Civic Theatre on Saturday, April 26 and Sunday, April 27.
