A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST Out Now RATED MA

Clearly a vanity project for Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane (star, producer, director and writer), A Million Ways To Die in the West, falls way short of the expectations raised from his first feature outing, Ted. McFarlane stars as inept and desperately selfinvolved sheep farmer, Albert who spends most of the time whining about how terrible everything is in the Wild West. After his girlfriend (Amanda Seyfried) leaves him, Albert forms an unlikely friendship with Anna, (Charlize Theron) an outlaw awaiting the return of her stagecoach robbing husband (Liam Neeson).

While Family Guy is tolerable in 22-minute bursts, with a runtime of over two hours, this film’s jokes tend to wear thin.

JIMMY BARNES 30/30 HINDSIGHT Out Now While he is often wrongly written off as a rock and roll screamer, there’s little denying that Jimmy Barnes is one of the most distinctive voices in the country and this set - a celebration of his formidable 30-year solo career - is a prefect testament to this fact.

While there’s no doubt that Barnes’ talent is enough to carry any album, for this latest offering , he’s enlisted some of his “heavy” musical friends - think the likes of Keith Urban, The Living End, Bernard Fanning, Shihad, Tina Arena, Jon Stevens and E Street Band legend Steven Van Zandt and the results are astounding.

Standouts here include the album’s opener - an absolutely tubthumping version of Lay Down Your Guns with the Living End, Going Down Alone with Journey and Ride The Night Away alongside Van Zandt.

If you thought sex, drugs and rock and roll was the dominion of long-haired ego maniacs in spandex, then you’re mind is about to be blown.

Right from the early 1900s some brave women of jazz and blues sang about love, sex, drugs and relationships. Amongst those, Bessie Smith, Ethel Waters, Alberta Hunter, Mamie Smith, Sippie Wallace, Pearl Bailey and others paved the way for many jazz cabaret singers of the future.

In those early cabaret shows, although the singer had the floor for most of the night, it was also customary to show the skills of jazz musicians in their solos. The show Naughty But Nice, which kicks off at the Royal Exchange this month, is a celebration of the music and attitude that emanated form those speakeasys and illicit nightclubs.

Where the wild things are aving packed up stumps and relocated stateside back in 2010, seeing rootsrocker, Mia Dyson on the Aussie touring circuit has been an increasingly rare occurrence.

Save for the odd Down Under run with friends Jen Cloher and Liz Stringer, Dyson has been busying herself with trying to crack the elusive US market with increasing success.

Now, with her fifth album, Idyllwild, under her belt, Dyson is making a welcome return to Australia and, with new shows being added to the tour at a fantastic speed, it looks like it may be a case of absence makes the heart grow fonder.

“I certainly hope so,” Dyson laughed.

“It really is very exciting to be back in Australia having the chance to reconnect with Aussie audiences after quite a long time away.

“Last year, I toured Oz with Jen and Liz which was great and then I headed back to the States in early 2014, played South

By Southwest and toured the East Coast, the Midwest and the South East - so I’ve definitely been busy.”

Building on the success of her previous album, the Moment, which saw success on both sides of the Pacific with its lead single When the Moment Comes, Idyllwild looks set to send her star further skyward.

Critics are already salivating over the album with some proclaiming it to be her best album and “eleven tracks of authentic roots rock brilliance”.

While Dyson said she tends to take things like this with a grain of salt, she added that positive reinforcement was always encouraging.

“It has been wonderful to see people reacting to the album so well,’ she said.

“I tend not to read too much into those things but hearing things like that tend to make you feel as though you’re on the right track.”

Dyson said that, after the protracted Moment sessions, she was keen to try a different approach on Idyllwild which, in and of itself, presented its own challenges.

“The Moment came about after quite a long time - a couple of years - so I really wanted to challenge myself to get something done in a much shorter time,” she said.

“So, I basically spent about a month in 2013, battening down the hatches in order to see if I could write that way, because

previously songs had just kind of come to me when they came.

“It was really challenging - I really thought, at the beginning that I would struggle with the process, you know, just sitting in front of a blank piece of paper knowing that you have to fill it, but we got there in the end.

“For me, though, the biggest help was just removing myself from the whole social media thing because it’s something that can be quite overwhelming.”

Growing up in the Victorian beachside town of Torquay, music always loomed large in Dyson’s life.

She became particularly enamoured with her blues guitarist father’s record collection, namely the likes of Dylan, Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt and Little Feat and a slew of American artists that first ignited her desire to, at the very least, experience a bit of American music culture.

“I always really wanted to go over to the States and my parents record collection was a big part of that,” she said.

“When I started playing guitar, my big dream was to get over to there, even if it was just to hear some music.

“After I’d released a few albums in Australia, it felt like the time was finally right.”

Heading Stateside in 2010, with her boyfriend, manager and bass player in tow, it’s been a roller coaster ride, but one which she said she was finally starting to get some traction.

“There wasn’t really any plan going over there, I didn’t really know anyone and eventually, all of those relationships started to fall apart - I split with my boyfriend and my manager and my bass player went home - it was pretty grim.

But, even though it has been a really uphill struggle, it feels like I’m finally starting to get a foothold in the US, which is great.”

Part of her US odyssey has included a stint collaborating with Eurythmics main man Dave Stewart, who attempted to mold Dyson into an androgynous pop star by the name of BOY - an experiment which didn’t work out but one which taught the singer many valuable lessons.

“I guess out of all of that, I realised that I was still quite susceptible to persuasion - having someone come along saying, “I can make things happen for you if only you do it this way’ is very tantalising, especially when it came about when I needed it the most,” she said.

“I basically ignored my best instincts on that and I’ve also realised that learning to trust your gut feelings is essential.”

THE GIVER This film, based on Lois Lowry’s book, tells the story of a perfect world. Everyone here is happy. When Jonas is 18 years old, he’s chosen to be the community’s Receiver of Memories. He enters into training with an old man called The Giver. From the Giver, Jonas learns about pain, sadness, war, and all the unhappy truths of the “real” world. He quickly realises that his community is fake. Confronted with this reality, Jonas faces difficult choices about his own life and his future.

Sean brings his dance crew known as The Mob to Los Angeles to try and make it. But they haven’t had much luck, eventually the Mob decides it’s time to go back to Miami but Sean decides to stay. He learns of a dance competition is Las Vegas wherein the winner will get a three year contract.

Sean needs a new crew so he asks fellow dancer Moose for help. And Moose introduces him to Andie, another friend and dancer who got injured a few years ago and is now ready to get back in. He recruits some other friends and they head Las Vegas as Lmmental. When they get there, they discover that the Mob too is also there, which is very touchy for Sean.

Boyhood

If you’re looking for a movie that is completely unique, Richard Linklater’s epic drama, Boyhood is the one for you.

Filmed over 12 years, Boyhood follows the life of Mason (Ellar Coltrane) as he experiences, everything from moving house, new schools, parties, fights with parents, discovering girls and eventually himself.

Coming along on for the ride on this experiment in film making are Patricia Arquette as Mason’s mum, Ethan Hawke as his oftenabsent father and newcomer Lorelei Linklater, the daughter of the writer/director.

This one is a slow burner and very character driven but the concept is completely fascinating.

Not only do you see the characters develop over more than a decade, you get to experience the growth of the actors, both young and old.

You won’t see another film like this one in a long time!

What We Do In The Shadows

When it comes to horror spoofs, with the exception of the uproariously brilliant zom-rom-com Shaun of the Dead, there are very few that hit the mark. This anaemic Kiwi vampire flick - written, directed by and staring Jermaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) and Taika Waititi (Eagle and Shark, Boy), certainly isn’t one of them.

Billed as a mockumentary, What We Do In The Shadows tells the story of three long suffering vampires - Viago (Waititi), Deacon (Jonathan Brugh) and Vladislav (Clement) are three vampiric flatmates who essentially spend their time complaining about the setbacks of being a vampire in modern day New Zealand - such as the problems of being a fashion conscious vampire in a reflectionheavy modern society. While Clement does elicit a few chuckles here and there, the problem is that he just wasn’t given enough to do.

Being a huge fan of his work in Chonchords, I approached this flick with a fair amount of anticipation - however, the jokes were just too few and far between for it to leave any lasting impression.

ith a menu that boasts the best of classic pub bistro fare and some truly sumptuous Asian dishes, the Mayfield Hotel, should definitely be at the top of your to-do list if you’re looking for some quality pub grub.

Deciding to sample the Asian side of the menu, my dining partner started our evening with an entrée of spring rolls and they honestly couldn’t be crispier or fresher.

For main, I decided on a personal favourite of mine -chicken cashew nut with chili jam - and this one puts the many that I’ve sampled to shame. The chicken was ridiculously tender and almost melted in the mouth while a hefty serve of cashews added an extra texture dimension and the chili-jam - not too sweet, not too hot - was an absolute delight.

This was truly a dish to write home about.

However, the true star of this menu was, without a doubt the Pho soup. The friendly barman, who ushered us to our seats, told us that this version of the popular Vietnamese street food was the best in town and he definitely wasn’t wrong.

Arriving in a huge bowl, this steaming soup was fragrant and full of flavour to begin with, however the addition of the accompanying basil, sprouts and lemon really made this dish sing.

A healthy portion of finely sliced beef floats in a hot broth filled with rice noodles - but pop in some sprouts and the depth of texture starts to emerge. The noodles are silky soft, the beef unbelievably tender while the sprouts add a perfect contrasting crunch.

f ever anyone needed a lesson in productivity, they could do well to take a few pointers from Perth-based punchy rockers The Love Junkies book.

This year alone, the band has toured Australia four times, played their first overseas gigs in Singapore and Vietnam, signed a deal with German label Siiick Records, released their self-produced EP Flight Test as well as their sophomore long player Blowing on the Devil’s Strumpet which dropped last week.

“It’s definitely all happening, the

record is out today and we’re stoked to be hitting the road again,” frontman Mitch McDonald said.

A short sharp shock of explosive urgency, Blowing on the Devil’s Strumpet was a self produced effort and McDonald said that there were quite a few hurdles to overcome.

“It does get pretty hard when you not only have to be on top of the recording and getting a good performance out of yourself, then you have to worry about the mixing and mastering and all that stressful s*hit. Also, pretty much as soon as we finished tracking the album the computer crashed so, yeah there were hurdles but they just make it all the better when you finally see the finished product.”

hat started out as a love of “nuding up” at parties has become quite a profitable career for Greg ‘Nacho’ Chivers.

Since 2007, Chivers has been astonishing audiences with death defying feats of genital gesticulation as part of the acclaimed Puppetry of the Penis show, which will be hitting the Hunter this month for a run of shows.

While Chivers said it had been some time since the troupe had been on the road - he couldn’t wait to have ‘em rolling in the aisles again.

“Yeah it has been a little while - we’ve been hibernating, you know, trimming the hedges - but now were back with a

heap of new tricks and we’re ready to go.”

The lads’ unique style of appendage origami includes such tricks as the Eiffel Tower, the Hamburger and the Wristwatch, however Chivers’ said his favourite was one that most guys would have already tried at least once.

“While it does change from time to time, at the moment, my favourite is definitely the Woman - partly because it’s so simple and one that most guys have already done,” he said.

“Although, my take on the Woman is totally pimped out and she owns the stage in a really really trashy way.”

CHG celebrates in style Saturday, September 13 will see the general opening of the CHG 40th Birthday Celebrations exhibition which will feature more than 30 artists across varying mediums exhibiting 1-2 artworks each. A major bronze sculpture by Steve Glassborow will also be on display in the gallery’s forecourt, adding to the sense of occasion.

Preceeding the party, from 3pm, the gallery will also play host to a panel of four local artists who will be discussing their first-hand experiences as full-time artists.

When asked what the secret of longevity in the art game was, Widdup remained pragmatic.

“It’s the same as everything, really and there’s no real secret to it - it’s all about doggedness and just turning up to work everyday with a cerain amount of passion for what you do. “Also, especially with an art gallery it’s all about keeping up to date with the ever-changing technological landscape and ideas about what art actually is I mean there are some mediums that exists now that were unheard of 40 years ago. It’s certainly been an exciting adventure.”

ince establishing Cooks Hill Galleries (CHG) in 1974, director Mark Widdup has seen his fare share of changes in both the local and wider art communities. Now, after 40 years of exhibiting some of the best art this region and Australia has to offer, Widdup will finally have the chance to reflect on what is quite an achievement when CHG celebrates its 40th birthday this weekend.

“It certainly has been busy - paintings, people and sculptures are constantly arriving and there’s still a bit of organisation to be done, but it’s definitely a very exciting time for the gallery.”

Widdup said the celebrations will kick off this Friday with an invitation-only function for clients where people will have the opportunity to write their recollections about their involvement with the gallery in a commemorative book as well as read a series of blog stories that Widdup had written about the gallery’s timeline (also available at artaffair.com.au).

“The Friday night will be a chance for long-time friends of the gallery to come and preview the collection, listen to a few speeches and get a sense of the gallery’s timeline from 1975 to today.”

fter calling it a day back in 2008, after the release of their mammoth Monuments EP, Melbourne rockers Antiskeptic have finally come out of hibernation with two new members and a cracking new album Stare Down The Ocean.

The boys will be in Newcastle this month as part of their national album tour and drummer Nick Coppin told TE that, while the workload had picked up in camp Antiskeptic of late, it was a good problem to have.

“Mate, we’ve been pretty much flat out lately,” he said.

“We’ve been rehearsing pretty solidly for like the past six weeks, but really it’s been a process of about two years where we basically holed ourselves away working out where we wanted to go with this.”

After wrapping things up in 2008, after two successful albums in Aurora and Memories of the Common Man, it was a one off gig - the last at the iconic Melbourne rock and roll venue The Arthouse (tickets for that show sold out in mere minutes), that inspired the reformation.

“Yeah that gig was definitely the catalyst,” Coppin said.

“Just seeing the amount of love for the band still out there made myself and [fellow foundation member Andrew Kitchen] want to keep it going.

“When we wrapped in 2008, there was kind of a sense of unfinished business, I guess, but our hands were kind of tied with some personal issues that were going on at the time, but when I reconnected with Andrew he felt the same way I did and we decided to get the ball rolling again, now we have a couple of new guys [Jarrod Salton - guitar, Travis Wardlaw bass and things couldn’t be better.”

If the band needed any sign that a comeback was something the fans wanted, then they got it when they launched a Pozible campaign to fund the record.

“Crowd funding was such a big part of this record - in the end we raised around 25 or 30 grand which is just phenomenal.”

With many lessons learnt on the road since they first hit it in 2000, Coppin said the modus operandi of Antiskeptic 2.0 was to take some time out and smell the roses.

“At the end of the day, we play in a rock and roll band and that’s supposed to be all about fun,” he said.

“At the end of 08, things got so serious in the band that I don’t think we appreciated all of the cool stuff we were doing because we were so ‘in it’. So now it’s all about having as much fun as we can and appreciate the fact that we are able to do things like make a record, film a video or even drive to Adelaide. It’s all pretty cool.”

fter setting tongues wagging with two brilliant singles last year in Baby I’m a Nobody Now and Keep on Running, Sydney-based popster Andy Bull is back with long player number two , Sea of Approval and it’s a doozy.

Bull, who kicked off his national album tour in Brisbane last weekend, said after quite a long process getting the album together, it was nice to see the light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak.

“It does feel pretty good to be on this side of the process,” he told TE while taking time out to nurse a birthday hangover at a Darlinghurst café.

‘It was basically one year of solitary work and I got so deep into the process that I truly felt like it was never going to end and while finishing an album is the ultimate, having people react to it positively is just the icing on the cake.”

Bull said he started the album before the release of the two singles but once they started to take off there was an added sense of pressure added to the Sea of Approval sessions, especially when the music press start using words like ‘highly anticipated’ in the lead up to the release.

“When I first started recording there was absolutely no pressure at all and then the singles started to do well and then there was this pressure to get the album out and also to live up to that hype, I

The album reperesents a bit of a shift for Bull with more explorations into the synth-ier side of things and he said that while, initially, he thought it would be hard to translate to the stage, playing them live has opened up whole new interpretations.

“This album is a lot more complex than previous releases and I did think that would be a challenge, but I’ve got a great band and it’s all about taking those bits of the songs that are the most compelling and accentuating them onstage. Looking at the songs in a different light also definitely helps keep things fresh for me.”

Touring Australia off the back of her latest record Reset, her first original English language release in 12 years, Arena kicked off a bumper hour and a half long set with a couple of tracks new tracks before putting her Dancing With the Stars skills to good use, sauntering about the stage in a black sequin jumpsuit during a funked-up rendition of 2001’s Soul Mate #9.

“It’s been 10 years since I performed in this theatre,” Arena quipped during an early break between tracks.

“It hasn’t changed a bit, it’s only us that bloody change.”

While Arena may have undergone the vast transformation from Young Talent Time graduate to French recording artist, spanning genres from dance-pop to heartfelt ballads along the way, one thing that certainly hasn’t changed about Arena is that unmistakable voice.

She may be in the backend of her 40s but Arena’s voice is as clear as ever and on Sunday night it was on full display during

a stripped back version of her latest single, Still Running. With just a simple piano accompaniment through the first verse, Arena’s voice filled the theatre and awed the crowd - simply breathtaking.

While new material featured heavily throughout the set, it was of course the classics from 1994’s Don’t Ask and 1997’s In Deep that garnered the greatest reaction from fans Arena reflected on her youth during a reworking of Sorrento Moon (I Remember) and fans leapt to their feet, hands raised in almost religious exaltation during 97’s Burn.

The night was capped off with an encore which included, you guessed it, Chains, perhaps Arena’s most iconic track. But 20 years since its release, it was a refreshed, re-vamped Chains that audience members were treated to. Where Arena in her midtwenties raced ahead with the lyrics, the now matured veteran of the Australian music held back, injecting new life into the well-worn crowd favourite - a testament to Arena’s self-declared need to experience and play with her music.

From 1990’s I Need Your Body to her later singles, Sunday’s set was a strong showcase of Arena’s massive achievements as both a performer and a songwriter and the perfect demonstration of why she has stood the test of time as one of Australia’s top musical exports.
