If it’s a set of rollicking blues and R&B that’s tempered with some of the most incisive and stinging fretwork heard in quite some time that you’re looking for, then you’ll want to pick up this latest album from one-time Butterfield Blues Band member and no-fooling blues powerhouse and slide guitar master, Elvin Bishop.

While the album contains five new Bishop tracks, it is when he gets into revisionist mode that things really heat up.

Bishop’s takes on Fats Domino’s Bo Weevil, Jimmy Reed’s Honest I Do and Lionel Hampton’s Hey-Ba-Ba-Re-Bop are definite standouts here. Aside from Bishop’s undeniable credentials, this album also features the formidable talents of Mickey Thomas (Jefferson Starship) and the blues harp icon Charlie Musselwhite.

While Darren Aronofsky, and his idiosyncratic directorial style, may seem like a strange choice to resurrect the Biblical epic, he has created a humanistic story amid the CGI bells and whistles - despite taking some liberties with the source material.

While the scope of this film is huge - a man chosen

by God to undertake a mission of rescue before a flood destroys the world at it’s heart, Noah, is about a man struggling with his own obsessions. In this sense, Aronofsky’s Noah fits in well with his other protagonists - the ballerina in Black Swan struggling for perfection, the mother and son in Requiem for a Dream and their self destructive obsessions and Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) looking for one last win.

Award-winning outlaw US singer-songwriter Gary Allan will be embarking on his first Australian tour in six years this September. The hard-living Californian will be joined on all shows by the legendary genre-bending party band The Mavericks and four-piece “redneck rock band” Blackjack Billy.

Australia’s love affair with Allan began fourteen years ago, when he made his first trip to our shores, winning over local crowds with his whiskey-soaked voice, raw charisma and intense live performances, including a show where he confronted a power failure at a venue by playing acoustic to a rowdy crowd while perched on the edge of the stage, singing “songs that make you laugh and make you cry, and songs that p**s you off.” Multiple return trips have cemented his reputation as an artist whose down to earth rock’n’roll swagger makes him just as home here, as in his own US home.

t may seem strange, but when singer songwriter Pete Murray released his breakthrough sophomore effort Feeler back in 2003 he didn’t really think much of it - in fact he didn’t listen to the record in full for eight years.

Sun, Summer at Eureka and Blue Sky Blue sending him further into the Aussie folkrock stratosphere. Murray said that he could pinpoint the very moment where he realised that he was on the right track with his music.

“Once we started getting a fair bit of airplay, we did a show at the Bar Broadway in Sydney and we rocked up t the gig and there was a line down the street,” he said.

“I thought that someone else was on who was going to steal my little crowd.

Anyway I opened the show with the last song on the album, Ten Foot Tall thinking it would be a quiet little song to start the show and everyone, something like 400 people were singing every word.

“It was kind of a weird because I went from playing to around 30 people in Melbourne bars to playing in front of thousands at festivals just months later after Feeler came out - it was a very exhilarating time.

“Actually, this Feeler tour has kind of taken me back to what it was like ten

years ago. Having a full room ofpeople chanting your name at the Enmore is a pretty special thing. When you have that kind of success, you only normally get to experience it once but I really think I’ve been lucky to get some of that back.”

With some solid touring, both here and overseas under his belt already this this year, Murray said that he would be looking to head back into the studio sometime soon, however he didn’t feel that he needed to rush into anything.

“Yeah, I’m working on some stuff at the moment, I mean I’m always writing, but I wouldn’t mind getting something new out soon.

“I mean, I don’t want to rush into anything.”

“I really thought I’d blown it with that record,” Murray told TE “ I guess I had a really bad dose of the post album blues - I really thought the album didn’t work and, to be honest, I didn’t really like it as an album.

“It’s funny, because a couple of years ago, I got a text from [Powderfinger guitarist] Darren Middleton and he said that he had just finished listening to it and that it was a bloody good record.

That got me curious so I had a listen to it back to back and I’ve got to say that now, I’m immensely proud of it, it really is a good album.

“The album does have a big fan-base and while it was hard for me, for a while, to see why, I think because there’s not a lot of pretence on there and it’s quite an honest record lyrically.

“I think that clicked with audiences because there wasn’t really much around like it at the time.”

Along with the tour, the album itself received a bit of an overhaul - a re-master at the legendary Abbey Road Studios along with a second disc featuring the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra.

“Having the orchestra was just amazing - hearing those songs “fleshed out” like that gave me a whole new perspective.

There are a couple of songs on there like Freedom, My Time, and Please where I thought to myself ‘ why didn’t we do this the first time?’.”

Murray, who has just wrapped up his Feeler tenth anniversary run - a tour that saw tickets selling like hotcakes all over the shop in a tacit acknowledgement of the album’s impact in Aussie popular music - will be heading back to Newcastle this month for two special shows at the Depot on Beaumont as part of his Winter Acoustic Series tour and he said Newcastle had always been high on the touring agenda.

“Yeah Newcastle has always been great,” he said.

“Whenever we’re putting a tour together, it’s always in the mix - the Feeler show I did there earlier this year was fantastic so I can’t wait to get back for these intimate shows.”

While Murray was a relative latecomer to the world of music, picking up the guitar at 22 while pursing a career in sports medicine, he has definitely taken to this singer-songwriter thing like a duck to water with subsequent albums See The

US funnyman on the go STEPHEN BISSET

hile there are some comedians who might wax lyrical about the social importance of their comedy and the way they are holding up a mirror to society to expose its foibles, US funnyman Arj Barker has less lofty ambitions for the upcoming local run of his show Go Time.

“Basically it’s all about hilarity,” the laconic Barker told TE down the line from Byron Bay. “My main hope is that people will basically just laugh their a**es off for an hour.

I mean, I try to be positive and there are positive messages snuck in there but people shouldn’t just come for a message they should come for the laughs.”

Having last visited our shores in 2012, arguably Australia’s favourite American comedian certainly hasn’t been resting on his laurels with some pretty solid touring both solo and with his old pals New Zealand’s ‘second best folk comedy duo’ The Flight of The Conchords (Conchords fans will be more than familiar with Barker as he appeared in their hilarious HBO series as Dave - Brett and Jermaine’s indifferent friend.)

In recent years, he has spent more time in our country than his own and has come to understand our culture perhaps better than we understand it ourselves.

While Barker said he was grateful that he had been so well received in Australia he was at a loss to explain why.

“I really don’t know what it is,” he said.

“I think I got some pretty good television spots early on and got a good momentum going that just seems to keep going and I’m definitely not complaining.”

While comedy is definitely Barker’s raison d’être he said that he likes to constantly test himself with new challenges.

“I really love music and I’ve been trying to learn the piano - I tried to learn it as a kid, but I really wasn’t interested then.

I’m also really interested in flying and I’m a partially qualified hang-gliding instructor so I guess it would be cool to be the world’s first hang-gliding, piano playing comedian. It’s all about testing yourself.”

Back in 2006, an unlikely hit emerged from the streets of Dublin, the endearing musical romance, Once. Now, eight years on, writer and director, John Carney is back with another boy meets girl musician tale, this time set in NYC. Songwriter Gretta (Keira Knightley), lacking confidence after a breakup with her pop star boyfriend (Adam Levine), gets roped into recording an album with washed up record label exec, Dan (Mark Ruffalo). This film wins points in the writing - Carney has come a long way since Once and, as a result, Begin Again is a lot more plot-driven than its predecessor -and for the music -I wouldn’t be surprised if the track Lost Stars receives a nod at next year’s Oscars. However, it loses marks for the chemistry, or lack thereof, between the leads, something Once did so well, and for the casting of Knightley in the role of Gretta. She may capture the look and angst of the heartbroken singer but she just doesn’t have the voice to carry it off.

Given that it seems every second film these days is a Marvel superhero flick, I approached Guardians of the Galaxy with a feeling that it was going to be the same as the last ten costumed defender film. However, director James Gunn (Super, Slither) has created an utterly engaging, both visually and plot-wise, film that is arguably the best film in the Marvel universe, so far.

26 years after being abducted from earth, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), discovers a mysterious and powerful orb that is coveted by all-round bad guy Ronan the Accuser, and thus an intergalactic manhunt begins. Quill assembles a rag-tag team of misfits - a genetically engineered racoon-type creature (Bradley Cooper), a humanoid tree (Vin Diesel), a revenge-consumed muscleman (Dave Bautista) and a mysterious female assassin (Zoe Saldana) to defeat the evil Ronan and earn the title of Guardians of the Galaxy. Gunn, who cut his teeth directing for Z-grade studio Troma, has struck the perfect balance between swashbuckling action and adventure, laugh-out-loud comedy and relatable characters.

egular readers of the TE Eat Out page will no doubt recall our excitement when we first sampled the deep sea delights on offer at the then newly opened Jeremiah Jones back in January. “Perfectly-cooked chips,” “melt-in-the-mouth” calamari - they were big claims to be bandying around but even after just one taste we were confident that this fish and chippery could not be beat.

Last weekend, eight months since our initial visit, we returned to Jeremiah’s to see if the seafood we put above all others had stood the test of time.

Well, we’re happy to report that the freshness we experienced last summer was not just a honeymoon. The fish is still market fresh, the oil is still changed daily, the ingredients are still of the highest quality and the result, Jeremiah’s Jones still has the best damn fish and chips in town.

As the buzz has grown about Jeremiah Jones, so too has the menu. On our most recent visit we taste tested one of the newest items of the menu, the classic fisherman’s basket ($15.90). A cornucopia of fresh seafood cooked to perfection think crispy prawns, impossibly tender calamari, generous portions of meaty shovelnose ray, light fillets of whiting, sprinkled with Murray River salt flakes, served on a bed of Jeremiah’s crispy, golden, chunky chips and served with a side of fresh and zesty pear and parmesan salad. Delish!

The secret of Jeremiah Jones really is about uncompromised freshness. Not only is the fish prepared fresh in-store everyday, even the tartare and aioli dipping sauces are house-made! There’s no expense or effort spared and the result is takeaway fish and chips that are beyond compare. We promise, you won’t be sharing these with the seagulls.

s far as red letter years go, with a massive tour with James Blunt, a gold record and three National Indigenous Music Award (NIMA) nominations, 2014 will definitely be up there for Tom Busby and Jeremy Marou, aka Busby Marou.

With their brilliant 2013 long player Farewell Fitzroy still kicking some pretty serious goals around the traps, Busby Marou are hitting the road on the back of their latest single My Second Mistake.

“It has been a pretty full-on year so far,” Jeremy Marou told TE “The James Blunt tour was amazing, getting to play to such big crowds and we also managed to get a gold record for our first album [ self-titled]. It’s been a bit of a slow burn given that it’s been out for a couple of years, but it’s really not that easy to get a gold record, especially with all of the piracy going on - so we’re so chuffed with that one. It’s definitely something to show the grandkids.”

Marou said the latest single My Second Mistake - an irresistibly playful tune about fidelity, growing up, and a healthy dose of Catholic guilt - was one of his favourite tracks on Farewell Fitzroy.

“It was just one of those songs that, when we demoed it, we knew that it definitely had legs. When we recorded the album over in Nashville we were

While there is obviously still plenty of life left in Farewell Fitzroy yet, Marou said that he and Tom were keen to start working on album number three.

“Time really has gone so quickly for us lately - it doesn’t really feel like two years since the first album,” he said.

We are definitely working on new tracks but the plan is to release another single and then head out on the road again for a bit of a duo tour and then we’ll look at recording again.

he last time Aussie rock legend Jimmy Barnes graced the stage at Bimbadgen Winery, all 8000 tickets sold out on the first day. While the Living End have been pretty quite on the touring front this year, forgivable after two and a half years of solid touring off the back of their latest long player The Ending Is Just The Beginning Repeating, Strachan said that there had been talk of new material, although distance has made it a bit difficult.

Country poster girl fter 20 years in the music business, Aussie country music star Beccy Cole should have enough stories to fill a book. It would make sense, then, that when TE called her to chat about her three upcoming local shows, that’s exactly what she was doing.

“I’m actually locked away in a little room finishing my book - it’s an autobiography so it’s been a testing exercise, but a very rewarding one.” Cole said the idea for the book came about after her first best-of album last year Beccy’s Big Hits. “That was definitely the start of the whole thing.

It was a really cool process going back over all those songs - like walking down memory lane, but I didn’t know whether to feel honoured or old,” she laughed.

After cutting her teeth in her mother, Carole Sturtzel’s band and busking in Tamworth with old mate Kasey Chambers, Cole burst onto the scene after winning the Star Maker contest in 1993. Since then, Cole has remained at the top of the Aussie country music tree with eight albums (three of which went gold), 13 number one singles, nine Golden Guitar awards and

an ARIA nomination for her latest studio album, Songs and Pictures under her belt.

She has never been one to shy away from relating personal experiences in her songs and in her personal life, recently revealing that she was gay on the ABC’s Australian Story. “I honestly believe that you can’t hide your own truth and if you’re going to be honest with others you need to be honest with yourself,” she said.

“Also, it is absolutely a cathartic process performing a lot of those songs live and the telling of stories is a really strong tradition of country music and, to my mind, the best stories are the ones that are true.”

ith their sophomore long player - the sweeping The Motive of Hope - garnering them even more attention, Newcastle four-piece will be playing a special show at the Warners Bay Hotel this weekend.

It’s been a busy 12 months for Hudson Arc, with the release of the new album and a slew of touring that has seen the band take on Europe a couple of times to rapturous receptions pretty much everywhere.

Hudson Arc is the brainchild of musician/composer/producer Gareth Hudson, who comes with an impressive career behind him producing awardwinning artists including The Buddy Knox Blues Band, Amy Vee and Auriel

Andrew. He has also recorded and written arrangements for artists including The Hilltop Hoods, The Last Kinection, Briggs and The Beards. Hudson teams up with gifted string trio Ensemble Arc consisting of Tadijana Ilicic (violin), Jamie Pollock (viola) and Rachel Pogson (cello) - all classically trained and bachelor of music graduates from Newcastle Conservatorium. The band’s debut album In An Ocean of Sacrifice piqued quite a bit of interest with ABC Sydney, Melbourne and Newcastle putting it on their playlists and, if the current trend is anything to go by, they are set to go at least one better with The Motive of Hope.
