Everyone won’t love it, but it’s very funny.

The first big-budget flick from indie director Ken Scott (‘Starbuck’, ‘Sticky Fingers’) tells the rather implausible story of affable underachiever David Wozniak (Vince Vaughn), who finds out he’s fathered 533 children through anonymous donations to a fertility clinic 20 years ago. Now he must decide whether or not to come forward when 142 of them file a lawsuit to reveal his identity. In the midst of all this, Wozniak’s girlfriend (Cobie Smulders) discovers she is pregnant and is unsure if the devil-may-care father of 100 or so can settle down and commit to life as a family man.

There is a surprising depth here, with Vaughn forced to confront questions of maturity.

Denham, who will be in town this weekend, has, across the course of three albums, created a high-energy, ramped up brand of country she h as d ubbed “re negade c ountry” so it would make sense that her latest long pl ayer a nd f irst w ith new l abel A BC Music is named, simply, Renegade.

“My s tyle h as a lways b een re ally h igh energy but, with ‘Renegade’ I really wanted to ramp things up,” she told TE. Director extraordinaire Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums, The D arjeeling Limit ed) has hi t i t for six again w ith an offerin g that is equal parts funny, poignant and thrilling.

The film tells the tale of Zero ( Tony Revolori), a y oung immigrant who comes to The Grand Budapest H otel as a lobb y boy under the tutelage of top conc ierge M. Gustave (Ralph Fiennes).

When M. Gustave is framed for murder it is up to Zero to help M. Gustave escape from prison and clear his name.

Quite simply, I couldn’t fault this film. The story was entertaining, the cast was fantastic and Anderson’s direction brilliant.

Ralph Fiennes shone as M. Gusta ve, charming the pants (quite literally) off the hotel ’s elderly female guests and (not li terally) me, while Tony Revolori, as Zero, will be a face to watch.

However, what really gave this film its spark was the Anderson touch, with his trademark trackin g shots, use of symmetr y and creative use of colour ad ding those finishing touches tha t make The Grand Budapest Hotel the best film I’ve seen this year.

hile they may’ve been a little quiet on t he re cording f ront of l ate, w ith th eir l ast al bum Mousetrap Heart dropping in 2010, don’t go thinking that Thirsty Merc have run out of puff.

After a m assive Au stralian s ummer tour earlier this year, the band are gearing up for another party – the Freakin’ Autumn tour.

“Yeah we’re actually kicking off the tour tonight and we’re all really excited – there’s a re ally g reat f eeling i n t he b and a t t he moment – i t’s a g reat time to be a me mber of T hirsty M erc,” f rontman R ai T histlethwaite told TE. Thistlethwaite s aid, a fter a n i ntensive period of re cording and touring from their debut self-titled album in 2004 through to Mousetrap Heart, the band felt a sabbatical was in order.

“I guess we were pretty busy with three

To that end, Thistlethwaite relocated to LA in 2012 (he now splits his time between LA and Sydney) to pursue a s olo career. Under the moniker of Su n Rai, Thistlethwaite has released one E P, Pocket Music, and is about

to drop the follow-up Escargot this month.

While Thistlethwaite seems to be making some serious in-roads into the US market, he said he was still as passionate about Thirsty Merc as he ever was. In fact, fans who have been holding t heir breath for new m aterial could soon exhale with abandon.

“We were in the studio earlier this year and

we recorded a new song and we’ve also been looking at doing some acoustic stuff, but I’d say w e’d b e l ooking t o get s omething ou t there in the last quarter of this year,” he said.

“It’s just really nice to be able to keep doing this thing and that there are people out there who want us to keep doing it,” he laughed.

around a t 80km/h inside a steel orb only 4-meters wide. Those with a fear of clowns need not worry. The comic relief providers here are non- threatening in appearance. Minimal facial makeup and no big noses or crazy hair.

Importantly, the show provides something for ev erybody. While the chil dren will find themselves giggling at the antics of the clo wns and performances f rom miniature horses, adults w ill appreciate the skill in volved in the knife- thro wing and aerial acts.

The Great Moscow Circus is on a t the TAFE Oval on Mai tland Rd, Tighes Hill until April 27 as part of a na tional tour which co vered 72, 000km in the past three years.

“I tell them tha t if they aren ’t bedazzled by the sho w, I w ill buy them a nice bottle of shiraz,” he said. “But if they are, they have to buy me a bot tle. I c an say that I’ve never had to buy one.”

Under the direction of Michael Edgley, the ac ts are ref reshed each time the circus visits Australia, which is generally every three to four years.

My dining partner and I decided to warm up or pala tes w ith a g enerous ser ving of cheese and garlic bread before sharin g an entrĂŠe of satay chicken skewers which proved to be a grea t starter. Three pieces of large, succulent tenderloin were grilled to perfection while the subtle, yet flavoursome peanut sa tay sauce had just the right amount of spice and the ad dition of a c risp and v ibrant side salad brough t a freshness to the dish tha t really made i t stand out.

With barely enough time to reminisce about the en trÊe, our mains arri ved and again we weren’t disappointed. My choice of the house- crumbed chick en schni tzel with garlic prawns was an absolute delight.

The chicken breast, coated in a deliciously crunchy c rumb was cook ed beautifully with no hint of oiliness or strin giness you might find in lesser dishes. A g enerous topping of moreish, succ ulent and sw eet prawns, doused in a rich garlic sauce was the perfect addition while the the g olden, crunchy chips and a f resh gar den salad rounded the dish off perfectly.

tive banjo playing, represents a widening of sonic scope for the songwriter thanks, in part, to collaboration with fellow Canadian and Juno-award winning indie-rocker Joel Plaskett, who also produced the EP “I’ve known Joel for years so it was great to be able to work with him - there’s a real mutual admiration that has built up between the two of us,� he said. “The EP kind of falls out of the scope of what I normally do - I wouldn’t say it’s a rock record or anything like that - I guess it’s just a little bit bigger. Joel and I went through an arc with a lot of the songs where they were built from the ground up in a really pop way.�

Luedecke, who became a father in 2012, said parenthood, aside from pragmatic things like finding the time to write, had changed the way he approached his songwriting. “On the one hand, the best hand, it has opened up the whole question of sentimentality - I find that I’m much more sentimental now,� he said. “On the other hand, it kind of puts a distance between the beginning of the beginnings of things - pretty much all of popular music is about the beginning of things, things like love affairs, so being a parent has kind of forced me to re-evaluate what I write about, but definitely in a good way.�

ith a moniker like Old Man Luedecke, you’d be forgiven if you expected a grizzled bluesman from the deep south to come shuffling across the stage.

However, at 37, the multiple Juno awardwinning Canadian songwriter is far from old and revels more in bluegrass than the blues. His highly literate and beautifully lilting banjo-driven folk revels in subtlety and nuance as evidenced on his latest long player Tender is the Night which recently took out album and folk album of the year at the Canadian East Coast Music awards.

After a successful Australian run last year, supporting Jordie Lane, Luedecke is heading back our way and the affable songwriter said he couldn’t wait to get back. “The last tour down there was just awesome - playing with Jordie was great and aside from the ridiculously long plane ride - I’m really looking forward to getting back,� he said.

This time around, Luedecke comes bearing new gifts, this time in the form of his new EP I Never Sang Before I Met You. The EP, while still redolent with Luedecke’s evocative turn of phrase and equally evoca-
