Hypnotic inspiration Jinja Safari frontman PEPA KNIGHT has branched out on his own with a mesmarisingly epic solo album, Hypnotized Vol 1. TE caught up with Knight ahead of his Newcastle show to chat about finding inspiration in India and repurposing fruit as musical instruments.

Essentially a hip-hop version of Rocky, 8 Mile is a highly watchable drama that is a loose retelling of the star, Eminem’s rise to the heady heights of the US rap game. Eminem stars as B-Rabbit - a down on his luck wannabe rapper whwo is tryring desperately to break free of his trailer park life in Detroit.

The rapper gives a fantasticly credible performance, augmented well by Kim Basinger, Michael Shannon and Brittany Murphy.

SLEEP Saturday, December 13 • Manning Bar, University of Sydney Union When San Jose sludge lords Sleep broke up in 1998, it looked like their magnum opus - the sprawling, hour-plus long, single track slice of epic stoner goodness that’s now known as Jerusalem or Dopesmoker - would never be heard. Fans realised stoner metal had lost one if its trailblazers and tried their best to move on. But 16 years later, the masters of doom live again. The fever dream journey that is Dopesmoker has been unleashed in its unedited, epic glory, and Sleep are back with their first piece of new music since 1998.

Now in 2014, Sleep looks like a super group. After their dissolution, vocalist and bassist Al Cisneros blazed trails with the rhythmic droning of OM. Matt Pike continued his devotional study of the riff as the spiritual successor to both Lemmy and Iommi through sludge metal power trio High on Fire.

Irish powerhouse Brendan Gleeson turns in a bravura performance (possibly a career-best) in this darkly-comic drama from director John Michael McDonagh.

Gleeson plays Father James, who is the local clergyman of a rural Irish parish. During confession one Sunday, an unseen local informs Father James of his plan of killing him as a way of gaining retrobution for abuse he suffered as a young boy at the hands of another Catholic priest.

Left with only seven days to make his peace, James visits those within his community while trying to track down his potential killer and trying to make sense of the whole mess.

One of the year’s best.

SIMPLE MINDS BIG MUSIC Out Now 80s new wave powerhouse Simple Minds are back with album number 16 and Jim Kerr and co have produced a collection that is a harkening back to the epic synths and booming drums that made them such a draw in the 1980s.

It seems the modus operandi here was to make gargantuan stadium friendly album and, if the firsts three songs Blindfolded, Midnight Walking and Honest Town - are anything to go by, then it’s mission accomplished.

While there are some moments that are, almost cheesily, stuck in the past (Kill or Cure) on the whole, this is a very contemporary sounding album, that while rooted in 80s histrionics, manages to sound decidedly fresh.

While never reaching ther same heights of Don’t You Forget About Me, Big Music certainly lives up to its name.

Still running like a dream For more than four decades, the word ‘Cadillac’ has been synonymous with quality entertainment in the Hunter, first with award-winning band, Gold Cadillac and now, with newly- formed six piece band, Cadillac.

Two of the original members of Gold Cadillac, Phil (Pop) Jones and Peter (Rock) Harrison plus recent members, Rob Carlyon and Jason Pranevicius

have been joined by two of Newcastle’s finest musicians, singer Trudy Burns and keyboard/vocalist Marty Wooster to form a new band dedicated to creating the best sounds from the 50s right through to the songs of the new millennium.

They’ve risen like the proverbial phoenix after fire took all of their gear and threatened their very lives, and now after a mighty hard slog Newcastle’s moody popsters Crazy Old Maurice are ready to celebrate with the launch of their new EP The Empty Glimmer.

Having lost pretty much everything except their lives in the fire that destroyed the Morrow Park Bowling

Club, a generous outpouring of support, in the form of fundraisers, helped the band replace the musical gear lost and get back on their feet and now they want to give something back with a day of fun, frivolity and a slew of musical mates including De’May and James Thomson, Zackari Watt and more to be announced at the Wickham Croatian Sports Club’s bowling green on Sunday, November 23.

Hypnotic inspiration W

ith his main outfit, the Central Coast- born Jinja Safari, on a bit of an extended hiatus, co- frontman Pepa Knight certainly isn’t resting on his laurels, with his wonderously expansive debut solo record Hypnotized Vol 1 set to drop at the end of the month.

Our appetites have already been whet with three singles - Rahh!, Clams and Coyote Chior - and if those deeply layered, uplifting epics are anything to go by, this album is set tor be one hell of a trip indeed.

Knight is gearing up for a national tour in support of Hypnotized and, as he told TE, the shows are shaping up to be as expansive as the album.

“It’s a very exciting time at the moment but it’s also quite hectic because there’s quite a lot going on,” he said.

“We’ve already done one show in Sydney, which went really well, but there are heaps of little things in there that you have to get right - like we have all of these 3D projections - you know, where you have to wear the red and blue glasses and stuff - it works really well but it is quite involved.”

PEPA KNIGHT SMALL BALLROOM THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 27 will also be bringing a new instrument with him on this tour - the ‘nanatron’ and yes, it is a bunch of bananas wired yp to produce a MIDI signal which Knight is able to manipulate with his hands.

“Yeah it kind of works,” he laughed.

“It worked okay in Sydney so hopefully I’ll have it down pat by the end of the tour. You basically touch a banana and that creates a signal - I currently have my bananas sing-

ing like a choir - it’s pretty cool.”

While Jinja Safari were known for their heady afro- pop sound, Knight has taken the band’s world music explorations to another level with Hypnotized - basing the album on his travels throughout India.

“I basically recorded a bunch of samples in all the places I visited and in a lot of cases, worked up songs based around those samples.

“There is this Hindu festival called Diwali where they just have fireworks going off everywhere and I recorded samples of the fireworks and made a song from it everything happened really naturally and organically with this record.

“It’s quite a personal album that’s kind of like a travel diary so I hope that people experience a similar sense of wonderment listening to it as I did while I was making it.”

Arguably one of the most anticipated films of the year, this latest instalment of the Hunger Games franchise is sure to have fans squealing with delight.

With the Games now destroyed and in pieces, Katniss Everdeen, along with Gale, Finnick and Beetee, end up in the so thought “destroyed” District 13. Under the leadership of Commander Coin and the advice of her friends, Katniss becomes the “Mockingjay” and the symbol of rebellion for the people.

While the late James Gandolfini will be forever remembered as mafia boss Tony Soprano, he was also a brilliant character actor, able to tackle almost any role thrown his way with aplomb - as evidenced by his gruff turn in this engaging crime drama.

Tom Hardy stars as Bob Saginowski who works as a bartender at his cousin Marv’s (Gandolfini) dive bar, that is also owned by a group of Chechen gangsters who use the joint as a drop for a money laundering racket. Bob is more than willing to go along with all of this until he finds himself at the centre of a botched robbery and becomes entangled in an investigation that makes him question the very nature of the people closest to him.

Gandolfini gives a brilliantly understated performance as former tough-guy Marv while Tom Hardy’s portrayal of the introspective and complex Bob was fascinating. While many of the ideas in The Drop have been done to death, great performances from Gandolfini and Hardy make this highly watchable.

My Old Lady

This film adaptation by legendary play-write, Israel Horovitz explores the good, the bad and the ugly side of love.

Screen stalwart, Maggie Smith (the Harry Potter franchise, Downton Abbey) plays Madame Girard, a 92-year-old Brit living in a sprawling Paris apartment, recently inherited by New Yorker, Mathius ‘Jim’ Gold (Kevin Kline, A Fish Called Wanda, Bob’s Burgers).

Cash-strapped Jim has every intention to sell the multi-million dollar historic home, but thanks to a kooky French law, known as viager, he cannot follow through with a sale until Madame Girard dies. As the pair come to terms with their temporary living arrangement, we soon find out that the relationship between the unlikely housemates is not what it first seems.

Decades of lies and deceit bubble to the surface as tempers flare and emotions fray. The trailer and poster give no indication of the drama that unfolds in this film.

It’s surprising, charming and moving all at once.

As you climb the staircase to this secluded second-floor bistro, all the hubhub of the highway quietly melts away as you’re met with a simply spectacular vista. Floor- to- ceiling glass windows run the whole length of the room taking full advantage of the panoramic views across the bowling greens to gorgeous Lake Macquarie. A stunning surprise for the first-time diner.

Not only is the sunny setting perfect for casual dining, the a la carte menu is too.

From fresh summer salads, tender steaks, crispy chicken schnitzel with assorted toppers, an array of seafood, and favourites from Asia and Italy, there is something here for all tastes.

But on our recent visit to Gusto Bistro, we found the real magic lived on the everchanging specials board.

After downing a serve of lightly toasted and extremely flavoursome garlic bread, my dining partner and I settled into our mains.

I opted for chicken and mushroom risotto.

Gusto Bistro’s spin on this simple but delicious Italian classic could not be faulted. Lashings of creamy rice with just the right balance tender chunks of chicken and earthy mushrooms thrown through a savoury delight.

My dining partner, no doubt inspired by the waterside setting, chose to enjoy some Atlantic Salmon, and enjoy it she did. This perfectly cooked, crispy-skinned fish was served with veggies, a potato rosti and a

Beautifully presented this was a real wow dish.

Both meals belied the club bistro setting.

This was some seriously, and surprisingly, tasty nosh.

hile legendary crooner Frank Sinatra may very well be the best interpreter of the great American songbook that the world has ever seen, arguably the best interpreter of Sinatra’s formidable canon is Australia’s own Tom Burlinson.

Burlinson will be in the region for two performances of his Simply Sinatra show, which he said was a stripped-back version of his wildly successful Now We’re Swinging and Frank - A Life in Song shows.

“We brought the Now We’re Swinging show, which aside from Frank also focussed on other artists like Nat King Cole and Tony Bennett to the region a while ago and audiences really seemed to connect with it,” he told TE. “This show, Simply Sinatra, is a little bit different in that the other shows used a 16- piece big band which can be a bit of a logistical nightmare, so we’ve reduced the size of the band but all of those great songs will be represented and more than a few stories will be thrown in as well.”

Burlinson, who first made a name for himself as the star of such iconic films

as The Man From Snowy River and Phar Lap said that his affinity for Sinatra was first ignited as a toddler - with particular thanks to a Sinatra record, A Swingin’ Affair, that was in his parents’ record collection.

“I remember looking at that record and saying ‘let’s play the man in the hat’,” he said.

It wasn’t until years later, after singing a self-penned song The Man in The Hat on the Midday Show that his uncanny resemblance to Sinatra was noticed.

“After I did that song , my representatives in LA heard about a production based around Frank’s life that was produced by his youngest daughter Tina,” he said.

“So I sent a videotape of myself doing the song on the show to her and before I knew it, I got the gig of singing all of the songs in the early part of Frank’s life, so the first hour of that miniseries is all me singing - which isn’t band considering it was my first professional gig as a singer.”

I

f you’re a fan of the work of Tex Perkins, particularly with his band The Dark Horses, you’d do well to catch their show at Lizotte’s this week, because it may be the last time you’ll get to see Tex for quite some time.

Last week, the brooding rocker announced his intention to run in the upcoming Victorian State election in the seat of Albert Park. Perkins, who will be campaigning on the singular issue of saving the iconic Palais Theatre in St Kilda told TE that things had been more than a little crazy in camp Perkins of late.

“This would have to have been one of the weirdest weeks I have ever spent in my whole time on the planet,” he said.

Perkins, who has been involved in the campaign to save the venue for some time, said the Palais was important not only to St Kilda but to the Australian music scene as a `whole.

“It’s more than just saving an old building,” he said.

“It’s unique in that there really isn’t another similar-sized venue in the coun-

try so if it goes, I imagine there would be overseas bands who would choose not to play - also from a pragmatic point of view, the amount of money the Palais injects into the St Kilda economy is staggering.”

Given that the live arena has been Perkins’ bread and butter for decades, it would make sense that he would fight to protect it. However, before he hits the hustings he will be heading back to Newcastle for an intimate show with the Dark Horses - another venue close to Perkins’ heart.

“In my humble opinion, Newcastle Lizotte’s is probably in my top three favourite venues in the country and it’s always a privilege to bring The Dark Horses - a bloody great bunch of musos - to such a great stage.”

Aside from his political aspirations, Perkins’ many mwusical outlets have been keeping him more than busy of late.

“The Dark Horses are currently in the middle eof writing an album which we’re hoping to have out early next yearand I’m getting pretty keen to do more stuff with The Ape - probably my favourite band that I’ve ever been in - so yeah, definitely keeping busy.”

Nahko’s music is a truly unique fusion of rock, folk and reggae, and the band is renowned for their powerful live performances, having become one of the USA’s most sought-after festival acts.

Nahko’s second album, Dark As Night, came in at number seven on Triple J’s top 10 roots albums of 2013. The album explores themes of self - discovery, forgiveness, and the embracement of all of life’s moments.

W

hile the Glimmer Twins (Mick Jagger and Keith Richards) may’ve lost some of their lustre over the years, there’s no denying that the pair, along with other principal Stones Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts know how to put on one hell of a rock and roll show - a fact that was rammed home to the 18,000 strong crowd who witnessed the Stones at Hope Estate on Saturday.

Homegrown acts British India and The Preatures did an admirable job of opening proceedings but it was obvious as the tongue logos on every second person’s shirt that it was the Stones that everyone came to see.

As soon as the stage exploded in a flash of colour, fireworks and the instantly recognisable Jumpin’ Jack Flash riff, the Stones had the crowd in the palm of their hand.

All of the major Stones food groups were represented with the boys playing classic cuts from albums as far back as their 1967 long player Between the Buttons (Let’s Spend the Night Together) right through to their 1989 slab Steel Wheels (Can’t Be Seen).

While Jagger took a few songs to really y get into the swing of things (not surprising g given he was recovering from a throatt infection) once the band ripped into a brilliant rendition of Tumbling Dice he wass well and truly in full flight and soared forr the duration - running from one end of the e stage to the other with abandon. Honestly, y, Jagger would be one of the only frontmen n in the history of rock and roll where you u feel worn out just watching him do hiss thing. Keith Richards was the epitome e of rock swagger, however he seemed to o be relying on his guitar more as a prop p than an instrument for most of the set,, preferring to let Ronnie Wood, the unsung g hero of the Stones, to do all of the heavy y lifting when it came to the fretwork. Thatt said, Richards took centre stage for three e songs - You Got the Silver, Before They y Make Me Run and Can’t Be Seen and in my y humble opinion this was one of the highlights of the show and when he did let his Telecaster do the talking he produced one of the best guitar sounds heard in quite some time. While all of this was going on, the ever stoic Charlie Watts barely even broke a sweat behind the kit running through the 19- song set with an almost effortless ease. This guy is still one of the greatest drummers in the history of rock and roll. Hands down.

Another definite standout - particularly for Stones die hards - was seeing former Stone Mick Taylor (who took on guitar

duties after the death of Brian Jones in 1969) reunite with his former bandmates for a tumbthumping runthrough of Midnight Rambler from the Let it Bleed set while Gimme Shelter, augmented by some seriously jaw-dropping vocals from backing singer Lisa Fischer, threatened to bring the house down.

Closing the set with Brown Sugar, the band quickly returned for a two song encore - a stirring You Can’t Always Get What You Want featuring the Sydney Philharmonia Choir and a furious (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.

The gig finished as it began - in a flurry of fireworks - and if you didn’t find something to write home about in this set then you obviously aren’t a fan of rock and roll.

Measure, the boys have well and truly struck while the iron is hot with their freshly-minted long-player chock full of pop rock earworms like Blank Check.

When Jones moved from the UK to Melbourne he almost immediately hooked up with American- bred guitarist Laf Zucurello and the pair bonded instantly over shared musical influences and a love of wearing suits.

The band quickly caught the ears of many tastemakers in the Melbourne scene and were signed to label Popboomerang before they had even played a gig. “We had the EP out before we’d even played a show so in the beginning we had to rely on a lot of bulls**t - thankfully now we’ve got the songs to back it up.”
