The original LP has been expanded, stretching over six CDs with sixteen unreleased tracks.

Also, The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings contains the complete June 27 performance during the iconic venue’s final weekend, after the band was handpicked by impresario Bill Graham to headline closing night.

Produced by Bill Levenson, The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings proves that, when it came to live performance, no other band could touch the Allmans in full flight.

While director Marc Webb’s second outing in this franchise reboot ticks all of the superhero blockbuster boxes - 3D friendly aerial shots, over-the-top set pieces, explosions and a central character having to overcome personal demons, there is a fair amount of story squeezed in - from the relationship between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy to Peter searching for clues around his parents’ death to the obligatory baddies - the sparky Electro and the Green Goblin. With this reboot coming just seven years after Sam Raimi’s last Spiderman outing, there is a sense it has all been done before but great performances from Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone might raise this above the glut of superhero films flooding the market.

When goodbye doesn’t mean forever fter calling it a day in 2007, after two blistering albums - When Goodbye Means Forever and Music For the Recently Deceased, it was a sense of unfinished business that prompted Adelaide-born metalcore outfit I Killed The Prom Queen to get back on the rock and roll treadmill. They’ve certainly wasted no time either, with an astonishingly brutal new album Beloved, released on legendary US punk label Epitaph, a killer run at this year’s Soundwave festival and their massive Rise of Brotality tour, featuring California’s The Ghost Inside, Byron Bay’s In Heart’s Wake and UK noise merchants Bury Tomorrow.

Lead guitarist Jona Weinhofen, who had lent his talents to US band Bleeding Through and the UK’s Bring Me The Horizon during the IKTPQ hiatus, told TE that it was a sustained interest in the band from die hard fans that prompted the reunion.

“I guess there was a sense of a bit of unfinished business,” he said.

“When I was touring with Bleeding Through and Bring Me The Horizon, kids would often come up after the shows and ask “what’s going on with I Killed The

Prom Queen?” and “When are you guys going to do stuff again”, so we basically thought to ourselves “ there still seems to be a lot of interest in the band, what’s the point of letting it rest.”

founding members Weinhofen and rhythm guitarist Kevin Cameron, but the inclusion of singer Jamie Hope (The Red Shore), drummer Shane O’Brien (Confession, Buried in Verona) and bass player Benjamin Coyte (Day Of Contempt, Carpathian) has added a whole new dimension to the sound.

“We’re really happy with this line-up and this is the solid one that we want to continue with,” he said.

“Because we’ve been playing more outside the country [the band are currently touring the US] we kind of eased Aussie fans into the new line-up on the Soundwave shows and they were really receptive, which is great.”

Given that it had been eight years since their last long player, Weinhofen said there was some pressure surrounding the sessions for Beloved it was that pressure that helped drive the creative process.

“There definitely was some pressure there given that we had been away for a while and with a new line-up - there was a lot to live up to,” he said.

“We tried to take the pressure as a positive and to use it to try and raise the creative bar for ourselves, so we’re just so stoked that people seem to be getting it.”

Back on the sunny side of the street till riding high on the back of a sold-out metro tour earlier this year, Aussie post-punk legends The Sunnyboys will be heading to Newcastle this October The Sunnyboys were last in the Hunter in 2012 opening for Elvis Costello at Bimbadgen, but this show will be their first Newcastle headlining gig in more than 20 years.

For the uninitiated, the Sunnyboys were formed by brothers Jeremy and Peter Oxley along with Bill Bilson and Richard Bergman in 1980.

The band’s first two albums Sunnyboys and Individuals, featuring such legendary tracks as Alone With You, Happy Man,

Tunnel of Love and You Need a Friend propelled them to the top of the Aussie pub rock tree. However, owing largely to frontman Jeremy Oxley’s struggle with mental illness, the band parted ways in 1984. With fans calling for a reunion ever since, the original line-up made a triumphant return to the stage, billed as Kids in Dust, for the Hoodoo Gurus Dig it Up festival in 2012 and have since released a retrospective album, Our Best Of, as well as re-releasing their debut long player with a second disc called New Kicks that features 17 unreleased pre-album demo sessions.

peaking of no-fooling Aussie rock and roll legends coming to Newcastle, seminal proto-punks Radio Birdman will also be heading our way this October.

Featuring original members Rob Younger, Deniz Tek and Pip Hoyle, along with Jim Dickson will descend on the Cambridge and while founding guitarist Chris “Klondike” Mazuak is conspicuously absent, this is still sure to be one hell of a gig.

To make things ever better the band will be reissuing their formidable back catalogue, the demand for which never ceases.

The reissue of the band’s material will initially be in the form of a limited edition CD box set. The box will contain the three studio albums Radios Appear (Trafalgar and Sire versions) and Living Eyes, all remastered from original tapes.

To cap off the box set there is also a previously unreleased live concert recorded at Paddington Town Hall in 1977 just prior to the band’s departure for the UK. This live recording has been mixed from master tapes that have languished forgotten for decades.

With a line-up of Hollywood heavyweights, each with a finger in the pie that is The Hundred Foot Journey - see Steven Speilberg and Oprah Winfrey as producers and Oscar winner Helen Mirren and leading lady - I went into this film with high expectations.

The trailer promises an uplifting story of cultures coming together over food - what’s not to love?

The Hundred Foot Journey, with its sumptuous gastronomic delights and stunning vistas of French countryside, looks wonderful and strong performances from the ensemble cast of British, French and Indian actors, along with brilliant direction from Lasse Hallström (Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, Chocolat) does much to disguise the movie’s main pitfall - a lot of lacklustre dialogue. Unfortunately The Hundred Foot Journey is a classic case of looks great on the menu but not so much when it arrives on your table.

I expected much more.

If you’re looking for a film with more machismo and big, dumb action than you can poke a stick at, then the third instalment of The Expendables should be right up your alley.

We’re back in the world of uber soldier Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) and his second-in-command Lee Christmas (Jason Statham) whose rag-tag team of mercenaries are still doing the government’s dirty work in the deepest darkest corners of the globe. Before too long Ross and co come face to face with arch villain Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson) - who seems hellbent on ending the Expendables once and for all. Realising that the Expendables - also featuring action stars Dolph Lungdren, Terry Crews and Randy Couture, might be getting a little long in the tooth, he hooks up with CIA guy Max Drummer (Harrison Ford) to recruit a younger more lithe team of mercenaries. While there are some solid moments here and Mel Gibson puts on a decent turn as the villain, a clunky script and way too many hackneyed action flick tropes make for one expendable cinema experience.

As far as Zoran Ilievski (bass) is concerned, all you can hear in rock music is bass. Well…. Up until the original Exposé was formed in 1998, Zoran had only ever played Macedonian music.

For 20 years he has played and continues to play this style of music with Sydney bands but a few years ago when given the opportunity to join a rock band, he didn’t let the opportunity slip.

Libby Jones, on drums, has been playing since she was 12 years old and to the shock of her parents is still rocking out.

f there’s one thing we should’ve learnt about music in this country, it’s that we have no shortage of talent in the roots genre. Case in point is Adelaide-based singer-songwriter Todd Sibbin who, along with his latest outfit The Acadian Driftwood have created a mesmerising and insightful album in A Set of Knives, A Pair of Pens.

The album, Sibbin’s third release, but first with the new outfit - Joel Crannich (Leader Cheetah), Kiah Gossner (Bearded Gypsy Band) and Ryan Oliver (Olivers Army) - bringing what Sibbin said was a “more heavy handedness to what are, at their core, contemporary folk songs”, was recorded largely in his home studio, which helped with a sense of ease surrounding the sessions.

“The way that I approach writing didn’t really change much from the last record [Always The Why] - even though most of it was done at home, there was still that pressure of wanting to perform well and get everything out the way you want it to sound, but definitely the time and money element of working in a studio wasn’t there this time around which helped quite a bit. Because there were no time limits, I found myself working for

A Set of Knives, A Pair of Pens will hit stores this week - just in time for the Newcastle show, although the prolific Sibbin said that he was already looking to start work on the next album.

“This one was quite a long process from start to finish, and because the songs on the record are essentially a year and a half old, I’m definitely getting ready to start work on the next one,” he said.

“I’ve been writing heaps so I’m definitely ready to go.”

rom the indie rock of Tambalane, to winning season six of Australian Idol to his raw, folk-inspired Buffalo Tales project, there’s no denying that we’ve seen many incarnations of Wes Carr.

Well, the affable singer-songwriter has done it once again, veering this time back into pop territory, with his hookier-thanRex Hunt’s-tackle-box ear-worm Anthem.

Carr told TE the song was all about living in the moment - a sentiment that is reflected in the single’s striking video in which he literally sheds his trademarked locks for the camera.

“Yeah, I’m really excited to be talking about Anthem - I’m really proud of it,” he said.

“It’s been about four years wince I’ve released a single under the Wes Carr name and people seem to be digging it which is great.

“The video was a collaborative thing between my wife and my best friend Alyssa McLelland and the idea was all about living in the moment as the song suggests, so they said to me “you’re gonna shave your head for this” and I thought the idea fit really well with the ‘out with the old and in with the new’ concept.”

Aside from promoting Anthem 2014 has certainly been a busy one for Carr.

Drawn from real-life experiences, writer Bryce Hallett reveals raw and heartfelt stories about life on the battlefront, tests of allegiance, moral uncertainty, leadership, and the strained and loving relationships in an era of momentous change are coupled with the iconic music of the era from the likes of The Rolling Stones, Creedence and Billy Thorpe.

“It’s a very different outlet for me but I’ve always been intrigued by theatre and the idea of playing a role, so being invited to be a part of this production is a huge honour,” Carr said.

“The Australian experience in Vietnam hasn’t really been explored like it has in the US and this production does a great job of that.

“Because it is based on real-life accounts it is very powerful and it was quite a shock for me because, while I knew about conscription and everything, I had never really given much thought to what it all really meant for those young boys - it really was quite an eye-opener.”

“Also, those songs - all those great songs.

I grew up learning to play most of them on the guitar so, having the opportunity to do them onstage is just awesome.”

A good dose of Mercurial magic hen it comes to rock and roll frontmen, there are few, if any, before or since who could hope to hold a candle to the late, great Freddie Mercury. His larger-than-life stage persona, coupled with a prodigious musical talent helped propel Queen to the very top of the classic rock tree.

Now, some 23 years after Mercury’s death the music of Queen is still in demand as ever and fans and newcomers alike will have the chance to relive the swagger and bombast of a Queen show when arguably one of the best Queen tributes - Queen: It’s A Kind of Magic comes to Newcastle next month.

Giles Taylor, who plays Mercury in the show, told TE that audiences could expect a show that was fitting of the band’s mammoth sound and reputation.

“Effectively this is a two-hour version of Queen’s best performances over the years,” Taylor explained.

“We cover all the bases - from the early 70s right through to just before Freddie passed. We’ve also got one of the most ridiculous light-shows that you’ve ever seen with flames and everything.

“Taylor said that while he had been a fan of the classic rock genre, and that Queen had always loomed in his musical background, it wasn’t until he joined the production at the beginning of the year

hen it comes to getting a crash course on the machinations of the music industry, organising an EP launch at the Sydney House, with no outside help, would definitely be up there.

That’s exactly what South Australian chanteuse Julia Henning did for the release of her debut EP Divisions - the plan paid off as well, with two sold-out performances at the iconic venue as well a soon-to-be-released documentary charting the experience. “Yeah that was a very intense period and I don’t think I’ve cried so much in the twelve weeks leading up to those shows,” Henning told TE. “What happened was my dad

actually contacted them himself to see about getting a show there and they said they wanted me to perform so from there we basically had to write 12 songs ion 12 weeks so we’d have enough material for the show. It was a very crazy time, but it was definitely worth it - a gig at the Opera House isn’t a bad way to kick things off at all.”

Henning is currently on the road in support of her debut long player Fledgling and she said that things were going quite swimmingly. “This is really our first big tour so we didn’t really have big expectations but so far they have definitely been exceeded.” Henning said the album was the realisation of a lifelong dream. “Ever since I was a little kid I’ve been dreaming of having a record out and it’s finally coming true.”
