Duane “The Rock” Johnson really does know his way around an action flick and, while his latest may not be his best, with a little help from Aussie Liam Hemsworth, it is certainly passable.

After failing to get into the police academy, Chris (Hemsworth), settles for a security guard job with the Empire State Armored Truck Company. Chris makes the mistake of mentioning the company's lax security to his best friend, Eddie (Michael Angarano), and is soon unwittingly drawn into an elaborate scheme to rob the abundant amounts of cash being stored there .

The Rock really saves this film with his effortless machismo.

Not bad.

If ever you needed proof that iconic Aussie rockers The Angels were still, well and truly, a hard-rockin’ force to be reckoned with, then you need look no further than ‘Talk the Talk’ – the band’s secont recorded outing with new frontman and proud Novocastrian Dave Gleeson.

When original singer Doc Neeson departed the line-up it seemed that Gleeson was the only singer in this country with the chops to fill Doc’s large boots – and it certainly shows here.

While these guys are not trying to break any new musical ground – let’s face it, it’s the Angels. Who would want them to?

Standouts here include the album’s opener and title track and the belting rocker Broken Windows. While it ain’t no ‘Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again’, ‘Talk the Talk’ is a worthy addition to the Angels canon.

frontman Declan Melia told TE. “When the time came to record another album we found ourselves without a label and a rehearsal space and we started questioning whether or not we wanted to continue as a band.”

Thankfully they chose to persevere and the result is their fifth long player ‘Controller’ arguably the band’s most fully realised and mature release to date.

The album has been kicking various goals around the traps since its release in March last year and, more recently, the lead single ‘I Can Make You Love Me’ attained gold status.

“Yeah it’s not bad for a bunch of young men from Mentone, Victoria who are in a little indie band that could,” Melia said.

“Honestly we never thought it would happen to us. Gold records usually happen to much better-looking people.”

While ‘Controller’ may be their most commercially accessible album, Melia said that the band felt some weight of expectation to replicate earlier successes going into the studio, firstly because it had been more than three years since ‘Avalanche’ and secondly because it was their first outing with new label Liberation.

“Yeah there was definitely pressure to replicate former success,” he said.

“The way I see it, every record has to be better than the last one or it’s game over – especially in this day and age and any artist who says that they don’t care about getting played on the radio or anything are having themselves on. So, yeah, there was pressure, but I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad thing – pushing ourselves to make a better record.”

Now that the album has been doing its thing for a while now, British India are well and truly hitting the ground running in 2014 with a string of headline shows as well as supporting Aussie pub rock legends Hunters and Collectors on their upcoming Day on the Green shows.

“It’s a great way to start the year,” Melia

“I’ve got a really good feeling about 2014 – I’ve been studying the flight patterns of birds and I recently opened up the entrails of a young calf and all of the signs seem really positive.”

hat do you get when you assemble some of the heaviest hitting Newie rock talent that has ever picked up an instrument and assemble them at arguably the home of rock and roll in Newcastle, the Wicko? You get one heck of an Australia Day to remember, that’s what.

fter a highly successful Australian run last year, the London Klezmer Quartet is heading our what for what promises to be a beguiling celebration of the Eastern European Jewish folk music.

Klezmer is a musical tradition of the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe.

Played by professional musicians called klezmorim, the genre originally consisted largely of dance tunes and instrumental display pieces for weddings and other celebrations.

Klezmer is easily identifiable by its characteristic expressive melodies, reminiscent of the human voice, complete with laughing and weeping.

This is not a coincidence - the style is meant to imitate khazone and paraliturgical singing. A number of dreydlekh (a Yiddish word for musical ornaments), such as krekhts ("sobs") are used to produce this style.

The London Klezmer Quartet, an allfemale band, are innovators and have emerged as leaders in the international klezmer scene, presenting a heady mix of traditional and original melodies that is the celebratory and soulful music of pre-war Jewish eastern Europe.

The London Klezmer Quartet take audiences on a Jewish Odyssey from Eastern Europe to Australia via the Balkans, Turkey, the US and London.

truly put the band at the top of the British invasion tree and still sound as fresh today as they did when realeased in the heady 1960s.

Now, some 50 years after first bursting onto what was to become known as the Merseybeat scene (alongside the likes of The Beatles, The Merseybeat, Gerry and the Pacemakers, and the Swingin’ Blue Jeans) the band are still well and truly a going concern and are set to continue a lifelong love affair with Australia when they touch down here next month.

“We just love Australia – we’ve been coming down there since September 1964 and have made it pretty much an annual tradition ever since,” bass player Frank Allen told TE from down the line at Heath-

row Airport. “It’s pretty amazing actually to see just how far Australia has come - the way Sydney has grown in that time is just phenomenal.”

one single, ‘Needles and Pins’ said Australia also played a part in the early Searchers story.

“We had recorded When You Walk In The Room and we headed over to Australia for a tour,” Allen explained.

“Anyway, while we were over there, the song started shooting up the charts and we didn’t have videos or anything in those days and there was no way to play it on Top Of The Pops so the BBC sent a film crew down to Australia to film us and that’s what they ended up using as the promotional clip for the song. Unfortunately I heard that the footage was scrapped by the BBC – I would’ve loved to get my hands on a copy.”

While the Searchers legacy may not be as readily recognisable as the Stones or the Beatles, Allen said the bands influence can still be heard in the sounds of today.

“I think The Searchers did influence music quite a bit in that the whole 12-string guitar sound was not used very much at all apart from bands like The Byrds. Then, particularly in the 90s with bands like Blur and Oasis, suddenly you had this really jangly sound creeping back in again. Also, Bruce Springsteen cites us as an influence and Tom Petty named ‘When You Walk In The Room’ in his top ten favourite British invasion records in Mojo magazine which is pretty nice.”

Troubadour Tom Tom Buckley like a lot of twangers, is a muso with a guitar and long hair. Tom's also quite possibly the funniest and coolest muso in all of Newcastle, so he thinks.

Tom’s passion for music started at very young age playing “La Bamba” in a nappy to his mum on a 2 string guitar. This passion has stuck with him and is fast making him a favourite in the local scene.

Tom's set list covers a vast range of genres and is forever growing, incorporating classics right through to current hits, to entertain all ages.

Tom Buckley is new to the solo scene, but not new to the music scene.

Tom has been lead singer of rock and roll covers band Moonlight Drive for more than seven years, and in this time learnt all the essentials needed to satisfy a crowd on any occasion.

fter catching the comedy bug as a 16-year-old, Newcastle-bred comedian Rowan Thambar knew that the life of a stand-up was one that he wanted to pursue.

Now, the 19-year-old will be returning to his old stomping ground to premiere his debut one-man show, ‘The Brown

Identity’ at the Royal Exchange Theatre.

“Yes, I’m really excited and a little bit nervous as it is the first show that I have produced, but hopefully people will have a lot of fun.”

Thambar said that while a large part of the show focussed on growing up as a Sri Lankan Australian, there were myriad topics covered in the one hour show.

“It is basically about me growing up in Australia with Sri Lankan heritage but I also touch on what it means to be

growing up as a member of my generation – it’s quite an expansive show that covers things like racism in society and how the media portrays it as well as the effect things like social media and reality television are having on us all. It sounds quite serious but I assure you, it’s also quite fun.

“I’ve always believed that the sole purpose of comedy is to challenge and question society in a light-hearted way and that’s definitely what I’m trying to achieve with the show.”

Thambar said it was seeing The Chaser crew performing live that piqued his interest in comedy, however, it wasn’t until he relocated to Sydney for university that the bug really took hold.

“I really started doing comedy when I was 16 and I went in the Class Clowns Comedy Copetition and I managed to make it to the national finals in Melbourne,” he explained.

“After that, I finished school and did a few gigs here and there but when I moved to Sydney, I really got back into comedy, but in terms of influences, the Chaser guys are definitely up there and as there is a musical component to what I do as well, people like Tim Minchin are big inspirations to me.

Rowan Thambar will be performing “The Brown Identity” at the Royal Exchange Theatre on Thursday, January 30 and Friday, January 31.

Jungal boogie T here is no denying that, when siblings sing together, there is something, almost intangible in the mesmeric resonance of their harmonies that can’t be beat as evidenced by the likes of The Andrews Sisters, The Beach Boys and our own Bee Gees.

Melbourne-based roots act, Jungal is making the most of this phenomenon, courtesy of sisters Jessie and Leisha Jungalwalla, with lush harmonies tempered by an earthy, foot-stomping roots/folk sound that has been described as having the heart of John Butler and the soul of Amy Winehouse.

The three-piece (fleshed out by friend Victoria Beard) will be in Newcastle this week in support of their sophomore long player ‘Leave My Head’ and Leisha Jungalwalla told TE that the prospect of kicking off the year with an East Coast run, with new product in tow, was an exciting one.

“Yes, it is exciting because one of our band members is just back from Canada so we’re literally rehearsing today and then heading out on the road.

“We recorded the album in April last year and then went on a tour of Canada so we haven’t really had a chance to play the new stuff on home soil yet.”

With their debut album ‘This Crooked Track’ dropping in 2010, it’s been a relatively long time between drinks and Jungalwalla said that a lot of water had passed under the Jungal bridge - as evidenced in the approach to songwriting this time around.

“Since the last album we’ve done quite a bit of touring and I’d say that was quite a big influence on the way we write and we’ve gone few a few personal things as well that, I think, have given the new songs a bit of a darker edge.”

If the pundits are to be believed, Jungal are certainly a band who know their way around a stage and Jungalwalla said the new album represented the first time they were able to capture the live energy on tape.

“Previously we have had some difficulty in getting that live vibe to come across on records,’ she said.

“But, with this one, we were limited by the number of days available so we basically spent one day on a track and we were really able to concentrate on capturing that live feel – we’re all really satisfied with the end result.”

decided to knock the producer idea on the head and they went and built their own studio - a little tin shed in the middle of an industrial estate and recorded the darn thing themselves, with mixing completed in a bedroom.

After keeping relatively quiet of late, the boys are back with a vengeance with their brooding new single ‘Krakow’.

Produced by Lachlan Mitchell (The Jezables), the song was conceived during a trip to the cold grey skies and lit-up non-stop streets of Europe and will be featured on their forthcoming EP ‘Own the Streets’.

amily relationships will be pushed to the limit when two of Australia’s premier blues harmonica players go head to head with each other - and their wives this Australia Day. Ian Collard and Chris Wilson will be on the same bill as country-swing supergroup, The Junes (pictured), featuring their best beloveds Suzannah Espie and Sarah Carroll along with Novacastrians Gleny Rae and Dougie Bull (also partners). These eclectic performers will be joined by The Cartwheels (Vic), Cyndi Boste (Vic) and local guitar legend Roy Payne’s Louisiana -inspired Cajun Dance Party.

The event is inaugural Australia Day rhythm and roots festival the Coaltown Strutters Ball, organised by Newcastle muso and member of the Junes Gleny Rae. Rae is capitalising on the artists in the area for the Tamworth and Nundle festivals, and bringing them together for a day long festival to provide quality family entertainment on one of our most festive public holidays.

“Over the past few years, I have watched Australia Day degenerate into an alcohol inspired jingoistic parade of Australian flags. Most revellers don’t even recognise what the day represents,” she said.

“As a multicultural nation, the celebration of settlement means different things to different people, particularly the Indigenous population. But to me, it should be a celebration of unity and Australian culture, particularly music!”

The Junes are currently celebrating the recent release of their 2nd full length album ‘Country Con Queso’ which was recorded in Melbourne’s Adelphia studios with producer Jeff Lang. The Junes soothed the Australian consciousness with their 2009 appearance on 'Spicks and Specks', and have since become a crowd favourite at festivals and venues across the country. Conquering the tyranny of distance, the Melbourne and Newcastle based 5-piece regularly play premier Australian festivals, (The Falls Festival, National Folk Festival and Port Fairy Folk Festival.
