If there is one thing that is sorely lacking in the sequel to the 2006 sword and sandal epic it is the direction of Zack Snyder.

Snyder, who has brought his unique vision to such films as The Watchmen and Man of Steel, only took on screenplay duties this time around, and it shows.

That’s not to say that this isn’t a visual feast that manages to capture Frank Miller’s (the author of the original graphic novel series) original style almost perfectly.

After the defeat of the Spartans, Persian King Xerxes is on the march against the major Greek City States. Admiral Themistocles must stop Xerxes, but must first use the might of the Greek navy to do battle with the Persian navy.

If ever you needed a decent starting point to begin your appreciation of a giant of the rebel country genre, this comprehensive four-disc set could very well be the place to start. Divided into three categories - the singer, the songwriter and the collaborator - this is a set where very few stones are left unturned. The singer portion focusses on his RCA period with such hits as Sweet Memories, through to his last charting single with Columbia - Living in the Promised Land. The songwriter section is the definite standout here with such iconic tunes as On The Road Again, Yesterday’s Wine and Hello Walls. The collaborator portion features duets with the likes of Roger Miller, Leon Russell and George Jones. Overall, the standout is his beautiful version of the Townes Van Zandt track Pancho and Lefty.

Certified sorrows ith 50 years in the music biz and 45 albums under his belt, you’d be forgiven in thinking that Joe Camilleri was getting ready to wrap things up. Listening to Certified Blue however - the latest and seventeenth album from the iconic Black Sorrows - there’s a palpable sense that the journey is far from over.

of how people are going to react to it. For me, the process on this one, for whatever reason, I don’t know why, I seem to have got right and the fact that people are happy with what we’ve put out there, has me really quite chuffed, to be honest.”

If there was something that could be attributed to the album’s success, Camilleri said it could be due to the fact that he thoroughly enjoyed the entire process of making the album.

“What was really nice was that I really enjoyed making this album with this version of the band,” he said.

“Mark [Gray - bass] and John [McAll keys] hadn’t recorded with me as band members before and everyone really wanted to be there and I think everyone felt that they had the freedom to express themselves musically - these are all small things but when you add them all up they amount to quite a lot.

“I remember walking out after we finished recording thinking “wow, these songs are doing what I thought they would, and in some cases more than I ever expected.”

Camilleri added that it was the process of music making, in and of itself, that had kept him so obviously passionate and driven for half a century.

“It’s just what I like to do, I guess,” he mused.

“I just love the process of it all - there’s nothing better than having something fresh to play onstage - I mean it’s nice to embrace the past but I certainly don’t want

to live there. Also, in terms of recording, in the studio you are as creative and adventurous as you can be and that’s a pretty hard thing not to fall in love with.”

In case you’ve been living under a rock, there’s little denying that Joe Camilleri has forged a career that has seen him become one of the most tireless and important figures in the Australian music industry.

Since first bursting into the national consciousness as frontman for seminal blues-rockers Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons, Camilleri has won his way into the national consciousness with such iconic songs as Shape I’m In, Hit and Run, Harley and Rose, Hold On To Me and Chained to the Wheel.

Since the Black Sorrows formed in 1984, they have toured Australia more times than they can remember, played sold-out shows across Europe, and sold more than a million albums globally.

At 66, Camilleri said that it can be a tough row to hoe getting industry gatekeepers interested in new product (he said that no labels were interested in Certified Blue) however, with the album’s success and the recent success of the likes of Russell Morris, things may well be changing.

“The people still speak with their feet and I’m forever grateful for that,” he said.

“It’s not an easy run and it’s definitely not all beer and skittles but I really do think that people are starting to recognise that there is room in this game for everybody, which is good because I’ve got no plans to go away any time soon.”

“I’ve written more than 400 songs and I’m still going strong, it’s just that the legs might be a little tireder - it’s been 50 years in the business and 45 years of hanging around,” Camilleri told TE down the line from Adelaide.

Following on from their 2012 release the mammoth three-disc Crooked Little Thoughts - Certified Blue represents a bit of a purple patch for the band with music wags across the country hailing it as a career-best effort in a year that has seen fellow so-called “heritage artist” Russell Morris achieve a similar feat with his Sharkmouth set.

“There really does seem to be a little thing happening around this record which is great and totally unexpected,” he said.

Creature Feature here may’ve been a bit of time, three years in fact, for the dust to settle around Sydney electro heroes Art vs Science’s ARIA chart-topping long player The Experiment, but that dust is well and truly being kicked up again with their latest ear-worm of an EP - Create/Destroy.

To celebrate the release of the EP, and its impossibly catchy single, Creature of the Night, the boys are embarking on a tour that will kick of at the Splendour in the Grass festival this weekend.

“Yeah, I’d say that Splendour is probably the best festival in the country so it’s always good to kick off a tour at such a brilliant festival,” drummer Dan Williams told TE. “This run is quite a modest one though, we’re only doing around six or seven shows - it’s kind of an intelligent plot by our management to leave the people wanting more, but yeah we’re kicking it off at Splendour and wrapping up at the North West Festival in Port Hedland so it should be a pretty fun run.”

ART VS SCIENCE THE CAMBRIDGE HOTEL FRIDAY, AUGUST 1 as Parlez Vous Francais and Magic Fountain under their belt, fun is a word that looms large in the Art vs Science modus operandi and Williams said the same could be said of Create/Destroy.

“We all had such a blast recording

it - it was so much fun to do,” he said. “ We did it all with Paul McKercher [You Am I, Sarah Blasko, Josh Pyke] in a studio in Brookvale and it was all done in two or three different sessions.

“We’d written a bunch more material

and there was the intention, at the beginning to release a full length but we felt that the songs were quite stylistically divergent, so we might be looking to release another EP a little further down the track. The first thing we ever released was an EP and I’m a really big fan of the format.”

While you might be forgiven for thinking that Art vs Science were resting on their laurels and basking in the success of The Experiment in the interim you’d be mistaken as the ensuing three years had been taken up with intense touring, dipping toes in other creative waters and a bit of technological upskilling.

“After the record came out we toured pretty much non-stop for a year and a half around Australia, the US, and Asia so after that we were all pretty exhausted,” Williams explained.

“So Dan [Mac, keys, guitar] and I took some time off while Jim Finn [keys, bass] did a solo record and we started with new material in early 2012 and there was a fair bit of teaching ourselves a lot of new technologies like making beats in Ableton and stuff and broadening our horizons -before scrapping all of that and going back to how we did things in the beginning,” he laughed.

The third film in a loose trilogy (Ten Canoes, The Tracker) this collaboration between director Rolf De Heer and actor David Gulpilil presents a look at the problems facing indigenous Australians, carried largely by a mesmeric performance from Gulpilil.

Gulpilil stars as the titular character - a former dancer living in an Arnhemland community during the intervention. He wants to live his life his way, however the intervention means stricter rules and when his gun and spear are confiscated, meaning that he can no longer hunt, Charlie heads into the bush to reconnect with the land and his ancestors. Charlie’s quest sets of a chain of events that sees him undergo a stint in a Darwin hospital and falling in with a group of homeless Aboriginals, before being arrested and thrown in jail.

De Heer sets quite a slow place with Charlie’s Country but, thanks to some beautiful cinematography and a career-best performance from Gulpilil, you’ll hardly notice. Charlie’s Country is a thought provoking film that will stay with you after the credits have rolled.

This fascinating French film delves into the life of one of the most iconic fashion designers of the twentieth century, Yves Saint Laurent (Pierre Niney), detailing his often rocky ride to greatness and his equally unsteady personal life.

More than a biopic documenting the rise of Saint Laurent as a designer, the golden moments of this film come in the relationship between the fashion genius and his partner, both personal and professional, Pierre Bergé (Guillaume Gallienne).

In some ways, the character of Bergé becomes the real star of this show, as you’re left wondering how he stands by his man in the face of Saint Laurent’s near-intolerable shyness, constant mood swings, drug abuse and open affairs with other men - and that’s before you account for Bergé’s pitfalls. Their relationship is completely intriguing.

Yves Saint Laurent avoids of the trap of becoming just another beautiful looking film about the fashion industry - there is plenty going on beneath the surface too.

iven its location, just a stone’s throw away from the picturesque surf at Caves Beach, the Caves Beachside Hotel is a great place to while away the hours with a relaxing drink or a meal with family and friends.

Head Chef, Glen Herivel, whose 30-year career has seen him cook in kitchens in countries as diverse as Austria, Switzerland, Russia, England and the Bahamas, has been back in the Caves Beach kitchen for three months and he said there was a sense of things coming full circle.

“We used to have the old pub, which was just up the hill, we had that for seven years and now we’re back again so it’s kind of come full circle.”

Aside from Herivel, the kitchen is in no shortage of experience.

“We’ve got a great team in the kitchen - we’ve got a German guy named Anton and he’s worked all through Europe and Canada, then we’ve got Johnny who’s the functions chef and he’s got a lot of experience cooking in a lot of kitchens around Newcastle and Kylie who is the sous chef in the bistro had also had a lot of experience around Newcastle,” he said.

Herivel added that while there was a focus on traditional bistro fare with the standard menu, the ever-changing specials menu made the most of seasonal produce.

“Our menu is a pretty basic bistro menu with hamburgers, pastas, schnitzels, steaks and that sort of thing but then we really work with our seasonal produce with the specials board so, we have a curry night on Tuesday night and this time of the year obviously we do a lot of slow-cooked hearty dishes like beef cheeks and shanks.”

erant Kenneth, Newcastle-based artist, musician and dedicated YouTuber can add filmmaker to his resume with his first forays into cinema - short film Day Out and companion piece Day Inn - premiering at the Royal Exchange Theatre this weekend.

Starring Michael Byrne (pictured), Day Out tells the rather Kafka-esque take of a paranoid and slightly delusional author, Vent, who is being censored by both his publisher and the state. Day Inn, on the other hand tells the story of how that censorship affects the day-to-day lives of the characters in the book.

Kenneth said that it was his novel Forever Dream, Forever Love, Forever More, which he will also be launching on the night, that formed the basis of inspiration for the films. “Yeah, two films and a novel on one night - it really is the complete package,” he laughed.

“It’s a novel that I wrote about ten years ago and had been adding bits and pieces to ever since. I finally got around to self-publishing it a few months ago and it will be launched on the night. But it’s the inspiration for the book in Day Inn - so the book in the film is a book that actually exists. I really like those Marvel movies and the old universal monster movies and how they tie their storylines

together, so I guess I’m trying to create my own little universe here.”

After an intensive 38-hour shooting period - with a cast and crew of relative newcomers, Kenneth said he felt confident of dipping his toes into the waters again although he said he looked forward to getting back to his other passion creating videos for his hilarious and eclectic YouTube channel gerantgerant (a channel with almost 4,000 subscribers). “Now that I’ve made my mistakes, I’d be happy to get back into film and I’d seriously consider doing a feature film,” he said. “But I want to get back to doing more stuff on YouTube - I’ve missed the immediacy of creating something and getting that instant feedback.

Autocratic for the people f there’s one venue that was always high on the agenda when planning Steve Lane and The Autocrats east coast run in support of their latest single Thirteen, it was definitely Maitland’s Grand Junction Hotel.

“Without any word of a lie, I reckon the Junkyard is the best venue in the country,” Lane told TE. “I just love the vibe and everything else they’ve got going on there - it’s a great little venue.”

After piquing much interest with their 2011 debut long player - the Australian Music Prize-shortlisted Romance of Communication, Lane and his Autocrats are back with their second album Birds Taking Flight. The album moves effortlessly from alt-country tinged pop (Thirteen) driving Kinievel-esque indie rockers (Birds Taking Flight) and is underpinned by a refreshing Australian and poetic sense of storytelling thanks to Lane and his collaboration with Victorian author John Holton.

When it comes to the Autocrats, well, they’re no slouches either - featuring the Augie March rhythm section of David Williams (drums) and Edmondo Amendola (bass) and Jimmy Williams from Paul

songs based on what’s fashionable,” he said. “There was also one review that said it sounded like a father trying to explain email to his teenage child and I was like ‘well, too bloody right - I am a father so that would make perfect sense.”

A quick trip around Africa

Described as a “circus of the senses”, Cirque Mother Africa is a heady mix of impressive physicality that gives audiences an insight into Africa’s varied festive traditions.

Cirque Mother Africa is the brainchild of former Tanzanian street performer Winston Riddle and the action is underpinned by a vibrant live music score performed by the In Africa Band.

Cirque Mother Africa lead vocalist Normah Mkwanazi, who has been with the production since its inception told TE that audiences could expect something quite unlike anything they’ve seen before.

“It is a very joyful, diverse and exotic show -it’s where the unbelievable happens, it’s where the impossible happens,” she said.

“There are seven different countries represented in the show - Ethiopia, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Ivory Coast, Benin, Zimbabwe and Guinea - and each of those countries have very diverse

cultures - so there will be lots of traditional dancing and some of the most unbelievable acrobatic stuff you have ever seen in your life - for example, there is a guy in the show called the Snake Man From Tanzania who can bend into any shape that you can imagine.”

Given that Mkwanazi had been with the show since its inception it would be forgivable if she had grown blasé in regard to these feats, but that certainly isn’t the case.

“Usually dishes are for the kitchen, but there is a guy from Ghana who spins nine or so dishes with his hands, feet and mouth - at the same time. For me, this is a highlight and I still find myself peeking through the curtains while I’m changing costumes trying to figure out how he does it.”

Given that Cirque Mother Africa has been now seen by more than two million sets of eyes, you’d think it would be hard for Mkwanazi to single out a highlight, however it was easier than you might think.

“Oh there have been so many happy memories, but one of the best was we were in Tennessee and Dolly Parton came to the show,” she said.

“Afterwards I was lucky enough to have a one-on-one chat with her and she said it was one of the best things she’d ever seen.

She even came back the next night and got onstage for the finale. It was wonderful.”

asmanian-born songwriter Tim Hulsman learnt from an early age how to perform for an audience.

He had 18 years of personal experience with which to observe how to both captivate and hold people, but he’s spent the last 23 estranged from the man who taught him, his father.

One of six children raised in a rigidly devout Jehovah’s Witness family, Hulsman’s father was a respected elder in the Jehovah’s Witness community, responsible for counselling and advising “the flock” and for ex-communicating members who were deemed to be straying, or to be “unrepentant sinners”.

Any music other than hymns and religious music was heavily regulated in the Hulsman home and while Hulsman’s paternal uncle was a well-regarded Jazz musician, he was “outside the flock” which only confirmed his parents’ belief that music would lead you astray.

At the age of 18, after years of argument and with compromise out of reach, Hulsman was ex-communicated from his family and the community over his desire to no longer follow religion, and instead seek a career in music.

Fast forward over two decades and Hulsman is still whole-heartedly embraced in his music, having moved from rock ‘n’ roll to his more recent
