It may’ve been a while, four years in fact, since we’ve heard anything from New Zealand rockers Shihad, but after just one listen to their latest and ninth studio effort it’s pretty clear that these guys are as potent as ever.

Produced by Killing Joke frontman, Jaz Coleman, Fvey is an album, unlike their previous couple of albums, with both of its feet planted firmly in rock and roll territory - nay stepping outside those confines - which is by no means a bad thing. It may be a far cry from earlier efforts but it’s still unmistakably Shihad.

From the album opener You Think You’re So Free, Jon Toogood and co grab you by the lapels and never let you go.

With brilliant production from Coleman, and a much more considered approach than ever before, this is one Shihad album worth buying.

hen it comes to controversial American comedians, aside from the late, great Lenny Bruce, there are few who can hold a candle to Andrew Dice Clay. Since he first stepped onstage at a Brooklyn comedy club in the late 1970s, he has courted controversy pretty much everywhere - most notably being banned for life on MTV after a ribald appearance at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards. Love him or hate him, there’s no denying that The Diceman is a heavyweight of comedy - holding the honour of selling out two nights at Madison Square Garden which places him in the company of such greats as George Carlin, Eddie Murphy, Dane Cook, Chris Rock and Kevin Hart.

creative outlet, Clay has courted both the silver and small screen since he first stepped on stage.

With small roles in such TV shows as Diff’rent Strokes and MASH, and films such as Making the Grade and Pretty In Pink, Clay’s big acting break came in the form of the starring role in The Adventures of Ford Fairlane.

Starring alongside Lauren Holly, Ed O’Neill, Priscilla Presley and Wayne Newton, Clay played the slightly misogynistic and wise-cracking Ford Fairlane - a detective who solved rock and roll related cases.

After Ford Fairlane, Clay experienced a bit of a career slump, with such projects as a US remake of the 70s British sitcom Bless This House not living up to the original hype. While Clay continued to perform and release comedy albums during this period, his star had fallen quite a bit from the Madison Square Garden days.

However, in what could be one of the greatest comebacks since Lazarus, after a bravura turn on the final season of the HBO comedy-drama Entourage, his phone started ringing again. A lot.

One of those people calling was none other than iconic director Woody Allen

who cast Clay in his latest film Blue Jasmine with Cate Blanchett and Alec Baldwin. He didn’t disappoint, either, with a performance that critics said was Oscar-worthy.

“It was such an honour working with such a great cast - and Woody, my God,” he said.

“I mean, people like Cate and Alec are Hollywood f**king royalty so I really wanted to bring my A-game to the role.

“I really wanted to be great for them so they could give their best performances - which is very different to stand-up because that’s all about being great for me.

Cate, though, she was just so freaking nice - she’s such a star and she also does the best Dice impression you’ve ever seen.”

With the comeback well and truly on track, after the Aussie tour, Clay will be releasing his autobiography, The Filthy Truth before starting work on another film project with a director by the name of Martin Scorsese.

“What can I say? The comeback continues. Un-f***ing-believable.”

Now, Clay will be heading our way for the first time ever to give Australian audiences a taste of his explicit, boundary pushing humour.

“I’m over here in Vegas right now - I’m performing at the Hard Rock and I just can’t wait to get down to Australia - it’s going to be un-f***in-believable,” he said.

“I play in Vegas a lot and I’ve had a lot of you Aussies come up to me and tell me that I should get my ass down there, so I figured it was about time.

“And, you know what? I’m gonna give you guys exactly what you want. I’m a big believer in giving the people what they’re paying for so I’ll just say that these shows are going to be as hardcore as I’ve ever been.”

Arguably the world’s first rock and roll comedian, Andrew Dice Clay’s star rose at a meteoric pace in the 1980s.

After gaining a name for himself at various comedy clubs in New York and LA, and focusing on creating the “Dice” character (that first appeared in the 1984 flick Making the Grade), his big break came in 1988 when he did a seven-minute set at Rodney Dangerfield’s comedy club.

From there, he snagged his own special on HBO, the starring role in one of the most underrated comedies of all time The Adventures of Ford Fairlane - and such massive gigs as Madison Square Garden and performing in front of the largest audience ever for a comedian, alongside Guns N’ Roses at the 1992 Rose Bowl.

Clay said that while he always knew he would “make it” in comedy he was never really interested or influenced by any of his predecessors - preferring instead to look at larger-than-life characters for his inspiration.

“I always knew what I was going to do and it wasn’t really a shock to me when it all started taking off. I wanted to be the Elvis Presley of comedy - a true rock star comic - and that had never really been done before.

“I wasn’t really influenced by any comics because I initially saw comedy as a way to get into acting so I was looking at people like Presley, Muhammed Ali, Sylvester Stallone, rock stars and just bigger-thanlife guys for my inspiration.”

A career in overdrive fter 38 years in the business you’d think that James Reyne would be taking it easy. However, 2014 is proving to be a busy year for the iconic songwriter - he is just about to wrap up a run of his James Reyne Plays Aussie Crawl show before starting his Anthology run in celebration of the release of his “best of” solo album, before jumping back on the Aussie Crawl run.

“Yeah, it’s definitely a good problem to have,” Reyne told TE. “We’re just about to jump on this acoustic Anthology tour and then we’re lucky enough be playing a few extra Aussie Crawl theatre shows in regional areas. So, it’s all happening.”

While Reyne will be forever remembered as the frontman for surf-rockers Australian Crawl, his solo output, totalling 13 albums, has eclipsed that of Aussie Crawl and with hits such as Hammerhead, Fall of Rome, Heaven on a Stick, and Motor’s Too Fast under his belt, he has proved that he is one of this country’s most incisive

songwriters. With multi-platinum sales and three top-ten ARIA albums, there’s no denying that his Anthology collection is way overdue. “I have to admit, I can’t take credit for that because it was Universal’s idea and they put the songs together but I have to take my hat off to them in that they gave me a lot of choice, particularly on the second disc, in terms of the newer stuff that I wanted on there.”

Reyne stepped out from behind the safety net of Australian Crawl in 1987 and hit the ground running with his self-titled debut - an album that spawned six hit singles. He said going solo was like having a weight lifted off his back. “It was absolutely liberating,” he said. “I had wanted to do it for a while before the band split up and I guess we’d reached a point where we’d grown out of the band so, for me, going solo was the next logical step.”

Given the success Reyne has seen, you’d think he might have an insight into what makes a song a hit. Well you’d be wrong.

“There’s a saying, that has been around since Aussie Crawl that if James thinks a song is going to be a hit, it will definitely tank. You just never know,” he said.

Having laid drunken waste to the Greek island of Malia in their first big screen outing, the Inbetweeners lads - Will, Simon, Neil and Jay - have Australia in their sights in this ridiculously rude and completely crude sequel.

After, the events in Malia, Jay is living it up on his gap year in Australia or as he calls it - “the sex capital of the world”. He convinces his compadres to join him Down Under and, inspired

by Peter Andre, they embark on another alcohol fuelled trip of a lifetime with more shenanigans that you can poke a stick at.

This is undergraduate gross-out humour of the highest order, but there is also room in this script for a certain amount of sweetness and heart. Thankfully, the film is light on Aussie stereotypes, preferring instead to lampoon annoying backpackers.

If you are easily offended, give this one a wide berth, but if flicks like the Hangover and Superbad tickle your funnybone, there’s plenty of fun to be had here.

It may be the most banal title for a film in years but don’t let that deter you, the Lunchbox is a heartwarming and delightful feature debut from Indian director, Ritesh Batra.

With the help of India’s famed dabbawala, lunchbox delivery system, an unlikely love story forms between an unhappy housewife, Ila (Nimrat Kaur) and an aging office worker, Saajan (Irrfan Khan), who each day mistakenly receives a hot lunch delivery intended for Ila’s husband. A series of intimate letters between the pair ensues, slowly revealing their fears and dreams and setting the foundations for two strong and emotive performances - veteran television and film actor, Khan is brilliant as the introverted widower, Saajan and relative new-comer Kaur really stands up alongside. The Lunchbox may not have the razzle-dazzle Western audiences might associate with India’s Bollywood cinema, but it’s its simplicity that gives this film its heart. If you can handle a cliffhanger ending, the Lunchbox might just be perfect for your next date night.

A seasoned talent At the age of 12, when a guitar was placed in his hands, it wasn’t hard to tell that Ben Travis was destined to be a performer.

After years of playing in bands, duos and trios fine tuning his performance skills it was time to take the leap and play the way he has always loved. Stripped back and acoustic. “I live for the moments my guitar is in my hand, for the moments that I am singing into a microphone. I forget all my troubles, all my problems and everything, for at least those few minutes, feels perfect,” he said.

By the age of 20 Ben had performed with The Screaming Jets, Anastasia, Chris Isaak, James Reyne and Grinspoon, performed at venues such as The Newcastle and Sydney Entertainment Centres, recorded an EP and toured Malaysia.

The ability to play just about any request you can shout out in a fun style will leave you wanting more.

He is also known for his quirky abilities in between songs, “seal like” balancing tricks and card tricks.

Pina Deli ina Deli has been a staple of the Newcastle foodie scene since, well, before the term “foodie” was even coined.

Located just off Beaumont Street, the Pina Deli team has been serving Italian cold cuts, antipasti products, delicious dolci (desserts), cheeses, pasta and more to its loyal customer-base for more than half a century.

Four years ago, Pina Deli owner, Deborah Brazel made the bold leap across the counter from customer to proprietor and said it was community ties that made Pina Deli different from the delicatessens in the big supermarkets.

“It’s more personalised than supermarkets,” Brazel said.

“It’s more like a family rather than what you get at the supermarket where it’s just serving.

“Everyone here likes to talk and unload - we have a lot of customers come in and just ask for the usual because we know them all.

“It’s just got a different feel to it.”

According to Brazel, customers flock to the deli for fresh cuts of traditional Italian mortadella, and prosciutto and delicious Hunter Belle cheeses, produced in

Clisby still dreaming after all these years hile he is best known in this country for his soulful turn on the 2013 series of the hit reality singing show, The Voice, Steve Clisby is certainly no stranger to the music business.

Starting his career in the 1970s after relocating from the US to Holland, Clisby forged a two-decade career as part of the band American Gypsy who, with tours with the likes of Chaka Khan, Kool and the Gang, Tina Turner, Santana and Frank Zappa, cemented themselves as the African Americal soul voice in Europe.

Oh, he’s also jammed with Jimi Hendrix and written songs for the likes of Groove Armada and Neneh Cherry. Phew.

Now, after becoming an Australian citizen in 2013 (Clisby relocated here in 1999), Clisby is heading out on the road in supported of his latest single Walking These Streets from his soon-to-be-released thirteenth long player Leave Me Dreaming.

The track is a big, bold and brassy ear worm underpinned by an undeniable

positivity. “I just love this track,” he said.

“It’s a metaphor for searching for love, for creative satisfaction and never giving up until you find it.”

Trying out for a reality show might not be the typical path for a 50-year music biz veteran, but for Clisby, it was all about the challenge.

“The funny thing is that I’d been here for 15 years and had a bit of a following around the Sydney area and The Voice was a chance to get in living rooms throughout Australia. I mean, if you wanted to play to 2.5 million people in clubs, it would take a lifetime,” he laughed.

“It was also a fantastic challenge for me - the experience is in making the choice.”

With a career peppered with highlighs such as working with Tina Turner (who personally complimented Clisby on his voice) and writing for Neneh Cherry an Groove Aramada, you’d think picking a highlight would be hard.

However, when one of those highlights is jamming with Jimi Hendrix as a young up and comer, it becomes a bit of a no brainer.

“People ask me all the time what it was like and I’m like ‘what do you think?’ I was just a kid, it was terrifying. But I made the decision to just dive in and do it and now I can say that I’ve jammed with Jimi which is pretty cool.”

Well, not only has he done just that, his fifth studio album Shifting Units is presented over two discs, Shifting Units Solo and Shifting Units - Friends and will be released next month.

“Its definitely an exciting time for me, I can’t wait to get it out there so people can finally hear it,” Miller told TE. Drawing on such disparate influences as jazz, blues, finger-style and country, Miller said that the album covered a lot of musical ground.

“I’d probably say that people could expect everything from it - there’s a fair amount going on,” he laughed.

e’s been serving up satiricallycharged pop punk since 1992 as the frontman for Frenzal Rhomb but now Jay Whalley has stepped out from behind the safety net of the band for a run of solo shows.

“I actually just got back from Melbourne - I was doing the solo thing in Melbourne, Ballarat, Ulladulla and Adelaide and the shows have been surprisingly good - the whole thing has been a bit of an experiment so it’s good to see people turning up.”

Whalley said that while the prospect of “going solo” had terrified him in the past, the decision came about thanks to some downtime in the Frenzal Rhomb schedule.

“The fact is I desperately need the money,” he laughed.

“But seriously, because we live all over the country far apart, Frenzal can take a long time to get together which can be a little frustrating.

“I’m pretty much writing all the time so, I decided to bite the bullet and try and play some of what I’d been writing in front of people.”

Missy back in the land of Oz ot on the heels of the impending release of her new album of eclectic Australian cover versions and accompanying book of essays, both titled Oz, Missy Higgins has kept the good news coming with the announcement of a national Oz tour that will swing by Newcastle in October.

Her Oz album features Missy re-imagining 15 Australian songs that were originally recorded by a diverse set of artists including The Angels, Slim Dusty, Something For Kate, Warumpi Band, Paul Kelly and The Drones.

In the accompanying Oz book, Missy uses each of those recordings as the starting point for a sprawling series of essays reflecting on life, love and how not to wear high heels.

erhaps best known in this country for her sweetly meandering folk-pop hit I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair), Scottish chanteuse and multi-instrumentalist Sandi Thom will be making her way to Newcastle next month.

Thom got her big break by being pretty much the first artist to ‘go viral’ on the internet by staging a live-streamed tour from her London flat in 2006.

Since then she’s had multi-platinum sales with a major label and topped

the singles charts both here and in the UK with Punk Rocker. Her last album, 2012’s Flesh and Blood was released independently and produced by Black Crowes co-founder Rich Robinson.

Since she last visited our shores in 2013, Thom has been as busy as ever, touring the US, UK and Scandinavia and filming a DVD live from a sold out hometown show in Scotland.
