Clint Eastwood is equally adept behind the camera as he is in front of it and this revenge tale is a prime example. Retired gunslinger, William Munny (Eastwood) is trying to lead the quiet life. That goes to pot when a group of prostitutes are assaulted. Dissatisfied with the sheriff’s justice, Munny decides to take the law into his own hands - he calls his old partner Ned and heads off to kill one more time, blurring the lines between heroism and villainy, man and myth.

While remakes, particularly those of the horror variety have never loomed large on this reviewer’s must-watch lists, this re-imagining of Steven King’s novel comes darn close to director Brian De Palma’s original.

Carrie White (Chloe Grace Moretz), is outcast by her peers and sheltered by her religious mother (Julianne Moore). Discovering she has the power of telekinesis, Carrie unleashes after being pushed too far at her senior prom. While it lacks a great deal of the tension that De Palma wrung out of the source material, much of this remake’s success comes from Moretz who brings believable awkwardness to the role.

Moore is also unsettling as Carrie’s religious zealot mother.

It’s been 16 years since Cincinnati soul rockers the Afghan Whigs have released an album and while, this one may not live up to the brooding brilliance of earlier efforts like Gentlemen, Black Love or 1965, it’s proof positive that there’s still life in this band yet.

Opening with the searing guitars of Parked Outside this is an album that slinks, almost effortlessly, from funk and soul-inspired guitar lines to out-and-out barn burners such as the swaggering Royal Cream.

Frontman Greg Dulli is in fine form here - caterwauling is way through peans to love, betrayal, and jealousy with a sneering aplomb.

This is an album that has had Whigs fans waiting with baited breath for 16 years and it was definitely worth the wait.

hen i t comes to lar gerthan - life personali ties in the w orld of A ustralian en tertainment, few can hol d a c andle to Peter Allen. Armed w ith a seemin gly limitless ener gy and an inna te abili ty to c reate timeless melodies ( Tenterfield Sadd ler, I Honestly L ove Y ou et al) Allen has, qui te rightly earned his place in the top echelons of the Australian popular music pantheon.

However, if there was one person qualified to do justice to Allen ’s extensive songbook, it would be the original B oy from Oz, Todd McKenney.

The Dancing W ith The S tars star w ill be heading our way next month with his Todd McKenney Sings Pet er A llen sho w, after a highly successful national run last year, and he told TE that the prospect of opening the Allen songbook was always an exciting one.

“Yeah, it’s really great to be out on the road again, you know,” he said.

“My band and I are kind of lik e family now - we all have a blast which is important when you’re on tour squeezed into a van.”

McKenney said tha t much of the sho w

tions such as Cats, 42nd Street, La Cage aux Folles and Priscilla Queen of the Desert (not to mention his long-standing role on Dancing With The S tars and a slew of radio and TV gigs), but it was snaring the role of Allen in the original Australian production of The Boy From Oz that shot him to national fame - however it was a role that he didn’t initially want to pursue.

“I’ve alwa ys been a massi ve P eter Allen fan - one of my first concerts was seeing him perform at the Perth Concert Hall,” he said.

“So, when the show was being cast, I didn’t necessarily want to g o for i t bec ause I was such a fan - but people k ept telling me that I should and I’m certainly glad I did because that role really did launch me - I highly doubt that I w ould be able to do stuff lik e Dancing With The Stars without that role, so I’m eternally grateful.

So just wha t is i t about Allen tha t still resonates w ith audiences ? “His lyric s and melodies are just so brillian t - those torch songs lik e Tenterfield Sadd ler just kind of engulf you. He was a fiercely proud Australian without being schmaltzy. He was just a brilliant performer in every sense.”

If y ou’re thinkin g of indulgin g in some ligh t- hearted, passi ve entertainment a t the c inema this w eekend, the la test offerin g from German director, Margarethe von Trotta is probably not the film for you.

Described b y c ritics as a “thinkin g man ’s film, this in tense historical drama follo ws acclaimed, y et con troversial philoso pher and political theorist, Hannah Ardent as she covers the 1961 trial of ex-Nazi Adolf Eichmann for the New Yorker magazine.

Barbara Sukowa, a long-time collaborator of von Trotta, shines in the title role managing to marry a veneer of quiet contemplation and c ritique with unexpected outbursts of ra w emotion, to brilliant effect.

This film is b y no means an easy wa tch, but if y ou’re up for a couple of hours fier y poli tical disc ussion and more deep- inthought smokin g scenes than y ou c an pok e a stick a t, then Hannah A rdent offers some serious food- for- though t about power and the folly of man.

While this film f rom first-time director and acclaimed c inematographer Wally Pfister (The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception) looks as slick as y ou’d e xpect and fea tures a ra ther formidable c ast, once you take away these bells and whistles this dystopian sc ifi is qui te a mud dled exercise. The stor y follows artific ial intelligence boffiin Dr W ill Caster (Depp) who is buil ding a machine that combines the collec tive in telligence of ev erything ev er known. While his e xperiments have shot him to the top of his field, they ha ve also gained the a ttention of an ti- technologists who will do anything they can to stop him. Before too long, only a few scenes in fac t, Depp, before poison kills him, manag es to download the subtotal of his consc iousness in to a computer helped alon g b y his researcher w ife Ev elyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max (Paul B ettany) whereby the digi tised Depp sets about imposing his o wn vision on the w orld. While some in teresting concepts about AI, and sin gularity theory are thro wn in, a meandering script with very little action, drag this film down.

from the specials menu - duck breast with wild mushroom risotto.

Full of flavour, the luscious risotto, bursting w ith a hug e variety of mushrooms, could have been a delicious meal by itself, but the ad dition of the duck breast really made this dish stand out.

The duck was subtly spiced and cook ed to a perfec t medium rare, w ith the fa t rendered perfectly and while this protein isn’t one y ou’ll see on most bo wling club menus, this dish is definitely worth a try.

Having dined here on a number of occ asions, m y dinin g partner and I arri ved with a palpable sense of an ticipation and, once again we were not disappointed.

I chose to kick off proceedin gs w ith an entrée of tha t ol d club classic, salt and pepper squid, and one w ord tha t almost instantly sprang to mind was “wow”.

A health y portion of perfec tly- cooked and spiced succulent squid was accompanied w ith a c risp and zesty Asian noodle salad while the addition of sweet soy and a roast garlic aioli ad ded a depth of f lavour, really taking this dish to the next level.

My dinin g partner ’s choice of toma to and basil br uschetta was another home run. The beautifully f resh toma to was highlighted b y the perfec t amoun t of basil (not overpowering but still definitely present) but the “ star” of this dish was definitely the thick and chew y slices of sourdough tha t w ere grilled to c runchy moreish perfection.

Ordering off the e xpansive and ev erchanging spec ials menu, m y main - a succulent rib ey e steak, in a ba th of silky smooth and creamy bernaise sauce - was a deligh t f rom start to finish and the accompaniment of some beautifully cooked root v egetables - pota to, c arrot, beetroot and parsnip made for one hearty dining experience - a perfec t dish to ward off those winter chill.

fter the global success of bands like the Black K eys, i t seems that ev eryone is g etting a tw o piece tog ether, but lumpin g M elbourne two-piece King of the North in w ith the likes of the aforemen tioned Ohio duo is a huge disser vice to the massi ve sound these guys produce.

What sets King of the North apart is that they sound as large, if not larger than the beefiest fi ve- piece thanks to a pioneering “three- f rom- one” gui tar technique from axe wielder Andrew Higgs.

“Danny [L eo, dr ums] w orks a t [iconic Melbourne rock and roll v enue] the Cherry bar and a guy recen tly did come up to him, adaman t that we go the idea for the band f rom the Black Keys, but to both of us, the idea of a band shoul d be one or tw o guitars, drums and bass - so the whole premise of the band is to tr y and create that sound w ith just the tw o of us.”

Higgs, who was recen tly named in an A ustralian Gui tar Magazine top 25 future legends of guitar poll, said that he achieves this mammoth sound b y using three separate amps - one for lead, one for rh ythm and one for bass usin g li ve looping to marr y all three seamlessly .

While Higgs said this approach c an be limiting in wha t they c an do, he ad ded that limi tations are not alwa ys a bad thing.

“Yeah bec ause of tha t set up w e are quite limited with where w e can go but sometimes I think limi tations c an be good. I was talking with some of the guys from Airborne the other da y about ho w much we love AC/DC - their stuff is also quite simple and in some wa ys limi ted but no one else coul d g et tha t sound. I mean, there are man y tools you can use to rip up conc rete, but nothing does the job better than a jackhammer.”

of the North ha ve been g etting qui te a bi t of e xposure of la te - namely w ith their latest single Wanted being used in a na tional BMW commerc ial and their barnstorming riff- a- rama album Sound the Underground named as album of the week on Triple M. “Y eah i t’s all pret ty surreal to see people diggin g the recor d in such a wa y,” Higgs said. “ The BMW thing was totally surreal bec ause we do everything totally in-house and for them to approach us to use the son g was a huge thing - we’re just so stoked.”

For Kin g of the North, i t’s all about cutting it in the live arena and Higgs said the band wan ted to c apture their li ve essence on the record - something which had eluded them on previous releases.

“Our last EP didn’t really c apture what we were about live so, for the album, we really wanted to g et that vibe recorded.

So we basically set up in the same room - my amps were set up in different rooms to help with clarity - but w e were just in there, playing. Ev erything was done as live as possible and we ended up recording 12 tracks in three days.”

hile he ma y’ve been born and bred in M erimbula, the H unter region and one v enue in particular, has alwa ys had a spec ial place in Kim Churchill’s heart.

The blues/roots/folkie will be kicking off his na tional tour, in support of his la test album Silence/Win, at the Grand J unction in Maitland next week w ith a stop a t the Cambridge also scheduled la ter in the month. “Yeah the Junkyard is more or less

kind of a spiritual home for me,” Churchill said.” While the album still rev els in a similar rootsy stock - in trade as prec ious album, this time around, there is a much wider scope, both sonic ally and lyric ally.

Churchill said tha t the new album represents somewhat of a chan ge in approach, most notably in tha t it is the first time he has enlisted the ser vices of a producer Warne Li vesey (Midnigh t Oil). “Ha ving Warne on boar d took a lot of recor ding weight off my mind so I could concentrate my energies more to the songwriting.”

After his Oz tour wraps up , Churchill will head over to the UK for a spot at Glastonbury before another C anadian/North American tour . H e said the best thin gs about life on the road were also the worst.

“It’s invigorating but at the same time you do ha ve f reak outs where y ou just wan t everything to stop for a little while.”
